In the United States, we have developed a laissez-faire attitude toward voting. With mail-in ballots and last minute registration, voting should be practiced by every eligible individual in Colorado. But it is not. My parents generation voted. Nothing would prevent that. But each generation takes that activity less seriously than the one before them. Many citizens no longer value their right to choose. Whether they feel unprepared, or do not think the vote matters, they allow others to make their decisions for them.

In an effort to make some small dent in this phenomenon, the Estes Valley Junior Election was created in 2016.

Since that time, students (K-12) who live in the Estes Valley have had an opportunity to practice vote in elections. However, there is more to participating in democracy than simply marking a ballot. We want our students to, in the words of John Adams, “dare to read, think, speak, and write.”

The Junior Election is a joint effort of the League of Women Voters of Estes Park, the Estes schools, the Estes Park Non-Profit Resource Center and the local Youth in Action Program. We encourage students to attend, and participate in, public meetings and League events. And we hold specific student only forums and events to give the students direct access to candidates and elected officials.

Each spring, our Town Trustees participate in an event answering student initiated questions. This year’s “Pizza and Politics,” a round-table discussion, occurs at 6 p.m., April 24, in the Estes Park High School Library. Poppy’s Pizza will be enjoyed by all Town of Estes Park Trustees along with 6th to 12th grade students attending the event. Students in public schools, the Options program, on-line schools, and homeschooling are invited to the party. Come celebrate Earth Day at Rocky Mountain National Park. A special Earth Day event will be held Saturday, April 20, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Beaver Meadows Visitor Center. Earth Day is a chance for the world to unite around the importance of preserving a healthy planet, and the role we play in its protection. There will be Arts & Crafts stations to create cool Earth Day artwork, and park staff and scientists will be on hand to share information on a variety of Earth Day topics. Park greenhouse tours will take place, offering a great way to see young plants springing to life. A map with directions to the greenhouse will be available at the Beaver Meadows Visitor Center.

Join in the Earth Day fun, and discover how to become better stewards of our shared environment. This event is also in conjunction with National Park Week and Rocky’s National Junior Ranger Day celebration! Be sure to wear your badges, or ask about earning a Rocky Mountain National Park Junior Ranger Badge at the event. There is family fun for everyone!

Workforce Housing and Childcare Task Force Requests Public Participation By: Trustee Carlie Bangs, Trustee Ron Norris and Assistant Town Administrator Machalek

Throughout March and April, the Workforce Housing and Childcare Task Force held discussions with 16 local stakeholders including all of the major Estes Valley taxing districts.

These conversations yielded valuable insights in our work to develop recommendations for the Town Board on the Town's role in workforce housing and childcare.

We are now seeking additional input from residents with different and diverse perspectives on these issues.

In order to collect this feedback, the Task Force is asking for volunteers to participate in a focus group exercise facilitated by the Estes Valley Restorative Justice Partnership. Decision Made For Transmission Line Replacement Near Estes Park Western Area Power Administration has decided to use the agency preferred alternative route to build a new doublecircuit 115-kilovolt transmission line and remove two existing old transmission lines between Estes Substation and Flatiron Substation, west of Loveland, Colorado.

This decision was announced in a record of decision published March 21 in the Federal Register.

WAPA currently owns, operates and maintains two 60- to 75-year-old transmission lines that begin and end in the same locations. Age, poor condition and changing needs in line access and vegetation management prompted WAPA to evaluate changes to the transmission lines to ensure continued safe and reliable energy delivery across the Front Range.

As described in the Final Environmental Impact Statement published in March 2018, the preferred route consolidates both lines into one, eliminating about 16 miles of transmission line and allowing the abandoned right of way to revegetate naturally.

Portions of both existing rights of way and limited new rights of way will be used for the new transmission line to limit or reduce the impact on visual, recreation and other environmental resources; secure adequate rights of way for the transmission line; maintain or decrease the number of structures along the line and ensure appropriate access to structures for reliability and safety.

The record of decision also includes changes to WAPA’s vegetation management practices to increase reliability, reduce wildfire risk and meet updated reg-

ulatory mandates and utility standards.

The Estes-to-Flatiron Transmission Rebuild Project involved extensive public engagement and evaluation of environmental and socioeconomic impacts over several years, including public hearings, meetings, and workshops.

“The feedback received during the scoping and draft EIS comment periods ensured this EIS would be a comprehensive analysis of the different alternatives, and ultimately informed the decision to use parts of different alternatives in the selected route,” said NEPA Document Manager Mark Wieringa.

The Canyon Lakes District of the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forest, a cooperating agency on the EIS, will issue its record of decision in the near future.

Construction would begin no earlier than January 2020.

Town Seeks Artists To Paint Utility Boxes After successful programs in both 2017 and 2018 transforming utility boxes into unique works of art, the Town of Estes Park will continue working with artists to decorate utility boxes in 2019. The Town and its citizen committee, the Parks Advisory Board, are seeking local artists to paint additional preselected utility boxes located in various locations. The boxes are located in the downtown area.

Park Supervisor Brian Berg commented, "We are really excited about this year's utility box selection, with the big box at Bond Park and the box in front of

the Community center being the highlights we are hoping for some great artist entries." He continued, "We have also selected some more along the river walk to continue the art downtown."

Berg explained the utility box project is part of the Town's Art in Public Places program, overseen by the Parks Advisory Board.

It brings the arts into public spaces to enhance the lives of residents and visitors. "What is cool about this project is that the Parks Advisory Board only selects local artists for the boxes and that gives it a hometown feel."

Artists interested in being a part of this exciting program can visit www.estes.org/rfp for a project description, request for proposal and a sample contract. The National Popular Vote Interstate Compact (NPVIC) is a compact and a legal agreement among states to award all of their electoral votes collectively to the presidential candidate who wins the popular vote nationwide, honoring the will of the people. It is a means of ensuring that the candidate with the most votes nationwide will become the president. It does not change the Electoral College at all, it only changes how states award their electors.

Our Colorado Legislature recently passed the NPVIC and Gov. Jared Polis has signed it into law. Since then, New Mexico has also approved the measure.

At least two other states are actively pursuing passage and there are others where it is being considered.

Under current arrangements, 48 states, including Colorado, award all electoral votes to the candidate who carried the state. Maine in 1969 and Nebraska in 1992 went to district elections, the only two states that do not have winner-take-all.

Polls over the past 40 years have consistently shown that the majority of the American public is in favor of a popular vote for president, where every American’s vote would be counted. As of April 2019, 14 states and DC have joined the NPVIC, which will not go into effect until enough states join to represent over half of the electoral votes, 270 out of 538. Currently the compact has 189 electoral votes.

While big cities might become the place

candidates choose to visit, the rural media market is much less expensive. It is worth noting that about 15% of the population lives in rural areas, generally voting along red lines. The most rural of which are (AL, AR, KY, ME, MS, MT, SD, ND, WV, AND VT), none of which are battleground states. About 15% of the population lives in the 50 largest cities (400,000 people or more), generally voting along blue lines; all other Americans live in the suburbs or small towns which are generally evenly split.

In 2016, two-thirds of the general election campaign events were in six states (FL, NC, MI, OH, PA AND VA). And 94% of the 2016 events were in just 12 states (AZ, CO, FL, IA, MI, NC, NH, NV, OH, PA, VA, AND WI). Our current system creates these 12 “swing states” where the outcome is unpredictable while the remainder of the states are “safe states” which are considered predictable.

That first instant when I saw the NotreDame cathedral engulfed in flames, I thought of the horror the world felt watching the Twin Towers as they imploded before our eyes. Thankfully, authorities believe the burning of NotreDame was an accident, not an act of terror, and no one died from the blaze.

Nonetheless, the iconic 850-year-old cathedral is the very heart of France, a symbol of its heritage. To watch it turn to ash was heartbreaking. The good news is that enough of the structure remains that it can be rebuilt. The grand lady has been near death before but she

survived and will rise again.

Notre-Dame is known as a liber pauperum, or a “poor people’s book.” The carved depictions of saints and prophets surrounding its exterior illustrated biblical stories for the illiterate. The gargoyles (grotesque human or animal creatures projecting from the gutter of the building to act as water spouts), chimera (firebreathing female monsters with the head of a lion and the body of a goat and a serpent’s tail), and strix (birds of ill omen that fed on human flesh and blood) were symbols of the evil and danger that threatened those who disobeyed the rules of the church.

Many of the mythical figures were removed from the façade in the 17th and 18th centuries or were destroyed during the French Revolution. When the cathedral fell into disrepair after the Revolution, many Parisians believed the crumbling structure should be demolished.

That’s when Victor Hugo wrote The Hunchback of Notre-Dame. The book was so popular that interest in the cathedral revived. Funds were raised and restoration took place in the 19th century, orchestrated by Eugene Viollet-leDuc. During that time many of the remaining grotesque figures were replaced with other sculptures, one of them being an out-of-place elephant, standing on its hind feet, looking down over Paris.

Today, France, not the Catholic Church, owns the Notre-Dame Cathedral. But its significance remains religious, as well as architectural and historical. Its magnificence has and will continue to stimulate a sense of awe and reverence for God. Emily Dickinson experiences her awe not in a human-built cathedral but among that same God’s natural creation.

In the poem “Some keep the Sabbath going to Church” she explains her religious preference: Some keep the Sabbath going to Church – I keep it, staying at Home – With a Bobolink for a Chorister – And an Orchard, for a Dome – Some keep the Sabbath in Surplice – I, just wear my Wings – And instead of tolling the Bell, for Church, Our little Sexton – sings.

God preaches, a noted Clergyman – And the sermon is never long, So instead of getting to Heaven, at last – I’m going, all along.

From visiting the most identifiable cathedral on earth (which will breathe life again in the future) to walking under the humblest of orchard domes, we wonder at the creations inspired by a power larger than our own. How blessed we are.

Harriet recalled a childhood exploring those surroundings: “[T]hey forgot to tell us that Lumpy Ridge was technical climbing. So my sister and I plus the two girls who lived next door to us would spend almost our entire time on Lumpy Ridge or on horses…. My sister had a horse that she rented from the Stanley Livery downtown. They would deliver it every morning and we would set it loose every afternoon at 5:00 and it would go back to the stable.”

“We would get on our horses,” she recalled, “go to town, and between our houses and town there was nothing but the Stanley Hotel. No other houses.

There was Storer Ranch a little to the east, but nothing else. And you’d ride and just meadows and rocks and flowers, and…it was great.”

Harriet spent almost her entire life as a resident of Estes Park, and her contributions as a volunteer and civic leader were tremendous and extensive, spanning dozens of organizations and touching many lives. Upon her death, over one hundred locals signed their name to a tribute message in the newspaper, noting that whenever someone had a local history question, the common refrain for over fifty years was, “Ask Harriet Burgess.”

Harriet and her husband Bill Burgess raised their family in Estes Park, a family

that now spans generations. Their children are Deborah Burgess Richardson of Estes Park; William Burgess III of Durango; and Virginia Burgess of Bloomfield, New Mexico.

Their grandchildren are Sarah Richardson Hanna of Johnstown; Brandon Richardson of Denver; Will Burgess IV of Durango; and Katelyn Burgess Jackson of Niwot. Great grandchildren are Dylan and Courntey Hanna; Logan Richardson; Britton, Harper and Canaan Burgess; and Dwyer and Sloane Jackson.

In addition to the Pioneer Award presentation, the May 8 program will also include a presentation by Museum staff on the renovations to the museum and the work of moving thousands of artifacts from temporary storage into the Annex building. The gathering will include light food and refreshments.

The Annual Meeting event is open to current members of the Museum Friends. Anyone who is not a Museum Friends member is encouraged to purchase a membership by May 3 to attend.

Well we pulled it off! We surprised Marie with a birthday party on April 13, a day before her birthday. She did not have a very good time on her 50th and had mentioned no one had ever given her an adult birthday party. Lexie and I decided right then and there that we would conspire and surprise her with a birthday bash. We had such fun sneaking around getting all the names of her friends and spiriting her siblings into town, along with a couple of her nieces and nephews. We had a few glitches when flights were cancelled due to that blizzard, but all came together, and she was so surprised and happy.

Some of my friends pitched in to help with food and serve. I could not have done it without them. I did make a lot of the hors d’oeuvres and the champagne punch, but only having one hand to work with really hinders me.

My hand is not healed yet and I am in a very restrictive cast, so I am getting recipes from all my friends. At bridge the other day, Johanna D. brought the most delicious soda bread. It was so moist and good I asked for the recipe.

She was kind enough to email it to me.

“I was given the Sweet Irish Soda Bread recipe from my neighbor after tasting some she had given us. She found it on the following website: www.mamagourmand.com.

Sweet Irish Soda Bread Ingredients 4 cups all purpose flour or gluten free flour, (my preferred gluten free flour is Cup 4 Cup brand)

1 cup sugar 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon baking powder 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/3 cup butter, melted and cooled 1 1/3 cup buttermilk 1 egg 3/4 cup dried cranberries, cherries, or raisins Instructions 1. Heat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a cast iron skillet or 9" cake pan with butter.

2. Whisk together flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, and salt in a large bowl. Make a well in the center.

3. In a small bowl whisk together butter, buttermilk, and egg 4. Add the liquid ingredients to the dry, pouring it into the well and stir to form a soft dough. Add the cranberries and mix until no flour pockets remain.

5. Shape dough into a ball (Tip: use lightly wet fingers if dough is sticky) and transfer to the prepared pan. Use a sharp knife to make and "X" on top of the ball.

6. Bake until set, about 1 hour to 1 hour 10 minutes. Insert a knife or toothpick in the middle to make sure it's set in the middle. Baking times can be longer, depending on the size of pan you bake it in and if using gluten free flour, which takes longer.

Get “Ticked” Off-Ticks Are Out And Looking For A Host Colorado tick fever is a real thing and is the most common disease that is spread by ticks. Ticks in Colorado do not carry Lyme disease according to the Colorado State University (CSU) Extension. Colorado tick fever symptoms present similarly to the flu: headaches, fever/chills and a feeling of fatigue. The symptoms will usually develop between three and seven days after a tick bite.

Brad Paisley wrote a popular song that said, “I'd like to check you for ticks, ” and that isn’t bad advice! The CSU Extension agrees and offers additional steps to prevent tick bites.

Conduct Tick Checks Ticks take several hours to settle and begin feeding. This gives you ample time to detect and remove them. The Rocky Mountain wood tick typically takes 12 to 24 hours to start feeding. Therefore, a thorough “tick check” can be an effective alternative to repellents. After walking through areas where ticks might be present, carefully look for and remove any ticks you may have picked up.

Avoid Tick Habitat Ticks are most active in spring and early summer and concentrate where their animal hosts most commonly travel. This includes brushy areas along the edges of fields and woodlands or commonly traveled paths through grassy areas and shrublands. During tick season these sites should be avoided when possible and when walking on paths remain in the center to avoid brushing vegetation on which ticks perch.

Wear Protective Clothing Long pants, long-sleeved shirts and other clothing can help exclude ticks or keep them from attaching to the skin.

Ticks are usually acquired while brushing against low vegetation, so pulling socks over the bottom of the pants leg also is useful. Light-colored clothing can make it easier to find ticks that have been picked up.

Use Tick Repellents There are a several repellents that are effective for ticks. Most commonly available is DEET but three other active ingredients are also recommended: picari-

dan, IR3535, and oil of lemon eucalyptus. These are applied either directly to the skin or to clothing. Repellents are most effective if applied to pants and other areas of the lower body likely to encounter ticks.

How to Remove a Tick There are many theories about how to remove a tick, but we wanted to offer a method from the CSU experts. Once a tick has become firmly attached to the skin, removal can be difficult and should be done with care. The goal of tick removal is to have it done quickly, rather than to wait for the tick to detach on its own.

The mouthparts are barbed, so they may remain after removal and allow infection. Fortunately, the Rocky Mountain wood tick, the most common species found in Colorado, is relatively easy to remove because it has relatively short mouthparts. The recommended procedure for removal of ticks is: 1. Grasp the tick with fine tipped tweezers, as close to the skin as possible.

If tweezers are not available and you must use your fingers, cover them with tissue or thin plastic to avoid the possible transmission of any disease organisms, such as tularemia, that the tick may harbor.

2. Pull the tick slowly and steadily, straight away from the skin. Try not to crush the tick as you remove it.

3. After the tick is removed, treat the feeding site with a disinfectant. Wash your hands when done. Never crush a tick with your fingers. Dispose of a live tick by putting it in alcohol, placing it in a sealed bag/container, wrapping it tightly in tape or flushing it down the toilet.

Join Us at Estes Valley Economic Strategy Meetings April 22 and 23 By: Jon Nicholas, Estes Park EDC Last week Adam Shake wrote about the Estes Valley Economic Development Strategy and Workforce and Education issues.

This week we cover Business Climate. Earlier this year, we held a facilitated discussion with stakeholders to discuss successes and challenges surrounding the topic of business climate.

Avalanche Consulting helped the Town of Estes Park and Estes Park EDC in completing the economic strategy, and will be back in Estes Park April 22 and 23 to meet with the community. Amy Holloway, President and CEO of Avalanche Consulting, will present a report card on our progress, drawing from our update meetings in January and February. The meetings will take place Monday, April 22 at the Estes Valley Library, Hondius Room as follows: 1 to 2:30 pm: discussion focused on business owners and entrepreneurs, 3 to 4:30 pm: community-wide discussion about economic strategy.

The presentations on Tuesday, April 23 will take place at the Town of Estes Park Municipal Building, Town Hall Board Room, as follows: 8:30 to 9:45 am: community-wide discussion, 10 to 11:15 am: capacity-building discussion with business groups and interested community members.

Business Climate. The 2015 Economic

Strategy defined this goal as: “Estes Valley government and business leaders embrace thoughtful policies and practices that help businesses succeed. ” Such a broad goal can result in a wide variety of ideas, and the group identified about 40 successes and challenges that surround the concept of business climate.

The Economic Strategy describes the goal as “focusing on policy changes and new programs that will improve the Estes Valley’s business climate, addressing the needs of existing businesses and those wishing to establish new operations in the community. ” Economic vitality and quality of life are intimately connected, which requires balancing competing goals.

The strategy explicitly mentions the very limited supply of vacant, developable properties in the Estes Valley, and recommends finding ways to encourage redevelopment of existing commercial areas. In 2015, interviews with business and property owners revealed “a common perception that the current development system makes it highly expensive to redevelop aging buildings and by restricting uses prevent some types of busi-

nesses and housing from existing in the Estes Valley altogether. ” The specific 2015 Business Climate objectives were: • Revising the Town’s current development policies and processes to match the needs of commercial businesses and workforce housing.

• Continuing the downtown master planning process and appropriately updating policies to reflect the new plans.

• Creating incentives to encourage property redevelopment and new investment.

• Improving communication between developers, property owners, and Town planning and permitting departments.

• Identifying creative uses for large properties that address community housing, commercial, and other needs.

Successes. Since 2015, there have been successes that our group’s discussion recognized.

Development Code changes to encourage workforce housing projects have promoted a start to addressing a community need.

(Nearly every project, however, has encountered opposition and concern, suggesting that much work remains with respect to community engagement.)

The Town has proposed or adopted numerous Code changes in the past few years. In May 2017, the Department prepared a memo for elected officials which explained that the objectives of the Code update process include: • Simplify, streamline, and make more transparent and accountable all elements in the Estes Valley Development Code; • Update language, procedures, and criteria to 21st Century standards; • Impose clearly defined and understandable regulations; • Balance the interests of nearby property owners with the entire community’s needs; • Identify a clear process for every development code procedure • Use a “deliberate speed” approach to process, allowing time for public comment, staff analysis and development review, but without arbitrary delays or indecision; and • Reduce the number of approvals with

“conditions. ” Since 2015, there have been nearly 40 Code amendments proposed, and the Community Development Department reports that it is currently working on about eight additional changes.

Challenges. The biggest current challenge concerns the building department. The Town is currently hiring a new Chief Building Inspector. Both the Town Board and staff have sought extensive input from local contractors on problems with the permitting process.

Two months ago, The Town Board met with the public and took comments from contractors and related professionals about delays and costs incurred by contractors and property owners due to delays in the building permit process.

Since February, the Town has been working actively on improving the permit process.

The Town formed a Building Advisory Committee, where contractors and Town staff are starting to identify both problems and potential solutions. The Town also retained an outside consultant to begin examining the entire process to identify potential improvements.

There were a variety of comments at the Business Climate meeting that essentially came back to trust and communication. Both businesses and residents are frustrated when the development approval process is uncertain, vague or contradictory. No one should want a system that produces so much difficulty for everyone involved. Also mentioned as challenges were the new flood plain map resulting in high flood insurance costs to downtown businesses, and the potential costs of storm water management.

Collaboration Between Learning Place And Educational Opportunity Center Helps GED Candidates Pay For Exam The Estes Park Learning Place is pleased to announce a new collaborative partnership with the Educational Opportunity Center for Larimer County in Fort Collins. EOC is a federally funded TRiO program dedicated to helping people achieve their career and educational goals. Their focus is on providing free services to qualified adults (U. S> Citizens/Permanent Residents) without a four-year degree. These include first generation individuals (parents did not attend a four-year college), age 19 or older with limited incomes; Veterans and military-connected family members and unaccompanied, homeless or foster youth.

If an individual qualifies, EOC can pay the cost for taking each of the GED exams. The Estes Park Learning Place is a certified testing center for the GED and this new collaboration will be very beneficial to individuals in the Estes Valley that we serve. Currently, each exam is $34.00 and with a total of four exams, the

cost is $136.00.

The EOC Site Director in the Larimer County, Fort Collins Office, Jan BarelaSmith and staff member, Martha Dailey, recently met with Sue Yowell, EPLP Executive Director and Kathy Granas, EPLP GED Coordinator to work out a plan for Estes Valley individuals to have access to the services of the EOC for Larimer County. Jan and Martha will be making the trip up to Estes each month to meet with individuals who qualify.

“This opportunity can be a real gamechanger for individuals in the Estes Valley in their pursuit of completing their High School Equivalency exam and pursuing higher education”, praised Yowell.

Only people can prevent conflicts with bears. Please do your part to protect your home and property, and prevent conflicts with bears.

Keep Bears Out n Many bears that enter homes do so through an unlocked or open window or door. Close and lock all bear-accessible windows and doors when you leave the house, and at night before you go to bed. n If you must leave downstairs windows open, install sturdy grates or bars. Screens donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t keep out bears. n Keep garage doors and windows closed and locked at night and when youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re not home. Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t leave your garage door standing open when youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re not outside. Install extra-sturdy doors if you have a freezer, refrigerator, pet food, bird seed, or other attractants in your garage. n Keep car doors and windows closed and locked if you park outside. Make sure thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s nothing with an odor in your vehicle, including candy, gum, air fresheners, trash, lotions and lip balms. n Bears are great climbers â&#x20AC;&#x201D; remove any tree limbs that might provide access to upper level decks and windows.

n Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t store food of any kind in an unlocked garage, flimsy shed or on or under your deck. n Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t leave anything with an odor outside, near open windows or in your vehicle, even if youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re home. That includes scented candles, air fresheners, soaps and lotions.

Teach Bears Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re Not Welcome n If a bear comes into your yard or close to your home, do yourself and the bear a big favor, and scare it away. A confident attitude plus loud noises like a firm yell, clapping your hands, banging on pots and pans or blowing an air horn sends most bears running. n If a bear enters your home, open doors and windows and make sure it can leave the same way it got in. Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t approach the bear or block escape routes. n Never approach a bear. If a bear wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t leave, call your local CPW office. If a bear presents an immediate threat to human safety, call 911.

Estes Park Middle School Students Win At the Rocky Mountain Environmental Challenge In Fort Collins

V Over 75 Northern Colorado public school students presented plans on how they could reduce their community’s flood risk during the Rocky Mountain Environmental Challenge (RMEC).

The RMEC was the culmination of the students’ hard work throughout the course of the school year to research local flood risks, create real-life solutions, and present a plan to enter into competition with other school districts. The winners of the competition are awarded money to fund their projects. This year’s winner, Estes Park Middle School, was awarded $1,000 for their project Protecting Estes Park from Wildfires where they discussed the heightened risk of flooding after wildfires.

“This year was the closest competition that we’ve ever had between the finalists,” said Vince Meldrum, President/CEO of Earth Force. “The biggest takeaway for me is that these young students found a broad spectrum of challenges facing their communities and took the necessary steps to find solutions.”

The RMEC is sponsored by The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and Earth Force to improve STEM curriculum with Northern Colorado public school project-based learning. This was the second year of the

competition. This year, the schools that participated were: Estes Park Middle School of Estes Park School District; Blevins Middle School, Compass Community Collaborative School and Webber Middle School of Poudre School District; and High Plains School EC8 of Thompson School District.

The competition-style approach helps prepare educators to engage students in real-world problem solving and reward young learners for thinking creatively about how to protect their communities from flooding, America’s most frequent and costly natural hazard.

A panel of qualified judges evaluated the student projects at the Poudre School District Boardroom. The judges represented FEMA, Earth Force, Larimer County Office of Emergency Management, Colorado Resiliency Office, Fort Collins Floodplain Management and the Association of State Floodplain Managers.

“This was a great step toward helping the next generation of students to become active leaders in their communities when it comes to solving challenges that face their neighborhoods,” said Tony Mendes of FEMA Region VIII. In this course participants will learn the fundamentals of the watercolor medium and the exciting way of applying paint in fresh and vibrant ways. The day will be spent learning varied techniques, how to set up a palette of colors, and the importance of shapes and values.

The instructor, Karen Ramsay, is not only a gifted artist but a positive and encouraging teacher. Rocky Mountain National Park is one of her favorite places to

paint, along with Grand Teton National Park and her own backyard in Fort Collins. Ramsay grew up with a love for drawing and painting. After graduating from the Colorado Institute of Art in Denver, where she studied under many talented artists, she went on to be featured in the Big Sky Journal as an â&#x20AC;&#x153;Artist of the Westâ&#x20AC;? in 2001.

I recently come across the lyrics of a powerful song about our Lord, so fitting as we approach Easter week. â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Lord of the Danceâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; depicts our Lord in His various roles throughout time. He â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;dancesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; first, before time, with the moon, stars, and sun. Then He comes to earth where He â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;dancesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; during His earthly ministry, a ministry that is not appreciated by the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;non-dancingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; scribes, Pharisees, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;holy onesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; and such critics. Finally, they crucified Him. The song says: â&#x20AC;&#x153;I danced on Friday, when the sun turned black. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hard to dance with the devil on your back. They buried my body and they thought Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d gone. But, I am the Dance, and the Dance goes on. They cut me down, but I leap on high. I am the Dance that will never, never die.â&#x20AC;? That is the reality that the world will be celebrating in just a few days. Jesus is the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Danceâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;Śand He invites us to participate.

He invites, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Dance then, wherever you may beâ&#x20AC;ŚIâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll lead you all in the Danceâ&#x20AC;?, says He.â&#x20AC;?

When I first read the lyrics I wept. I sometimes forget that a relationship with Jesus is like a â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Danceâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;, not a drudgery, not a burden, it is a joyful existenceâ&#x20AC;Śand it goes on because â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;He lives!â&#x20AC;&#x2122; and He â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;leads usâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; in that kind of joyful life, here and in the next life.

When I was serving with a church in southern California, I directed church camps with another preacher from south LA. His teenage son also helped in the teen camps at Big Bear Lake.

After I left that area I lost track of the young man, until one day, at a menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s workshop in Tulsa, Oklahoma, I heard a lecture by that, now-grown-up, young man. His topic: â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Daring to Dance with Godâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;, in which he shared some material from a book he had just published by the same name.

Afterwards I stood in line to get Jeffâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s book. I was amazed that he still remembered me from his past. He handed me my book, in which he had inscribed: â&#x20AC;&#x153;To Bob. Keep dancing!â&#x20AC;? I have to admit that I havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t always â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;kept dancingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; like I should have, and like the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Lord of the Danceâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; would like me to, but what a powerful encouragement due to the realization that Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s leading us to do so. So let me share a few things from Jeff Wallingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s bookâ&#x20AC;Śand how you can â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Dare to dance with Godâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;.

We are encouraged to follow these steps if we want to â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;danceâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; with Him. We have to â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;let goâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; of things that hinder us from entering in to that joyous experience; we have to â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;take His handâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; and trust His leading; we need to â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;follow His leadâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;Śnot try to go our own direction; we must â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;chooseâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; to see our life with Him as a â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;danceâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; and willingly and joyfully join in; and, most of all, we need to see â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;the Invisibleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;Śour Heavenly Partner.

After sharing things that often hinder people from â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;enteringâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; and â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;continuingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Danceâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;, Jeff reminds us that the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Danceâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; is especially important: when times are tough; when you get caught doing wrong things; when your choices are foolish; and when your world falls apart.

Joy is hard to come by when those things occur, but the Lord of the Dance can help us cope with themâ&#x20AC;Śand â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;keep on dancingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;.

Jeff closes by reminding us that Godâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s wish is that we: â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;save the last dance for Himâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll close this article with his wise words. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Admittedly, the last dance is the one you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get to practice for. You can only dance with God once. And donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t join those who stopped dancing with God because they are so worried about that last dance. God knows how to dance lifeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s final dance well enough to lead the beginner through it. So donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t let Satan keep you fretting as his orchestra swings with â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;The Partyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s over!â&#x20AC;? The Lord of the Dance never plays that song because with Him, the celebration is always just beginning. Let the band play on!â&#x20AC;? I trust that you are enjoying the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Danceâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Keep dancing!â&#x20AC;?

RiverPlace Closing Their Doors Almost a decade ago, RivePlace, A community Livingroom in Downtown, opened its doors to welcome visitors and guests from all corners of the town and world. We have been blessed by so many who have come for a cup of coffee, a game of Scrabble, found just a place to sit and relax.

We will be closing our door on April 30 after nearly 10 years of being available to folks in downtown. The number of people who have found a safe haven at RiverPlace over the years is in the thousands, and the hours served by the volunteers who have been there to welcome guests cannot be measured. We canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t even imagine how many fresh

baked cookies have been consumed and how many pots of coffee have been brewed! We have been blessed by so many encountersâ&#x20AC;Śbeen privileged to help folks in so many ways, helped them get back home, get medical care, found emergency housing, paid utility bills, provided for many a meal for the hungry, welcomed all with open hearts and open minds. What Can You Do With Your Tax Refund?

We’re getting close to the tax-filing deadline. For many of us, this means it’s that time of year when we get our biggest financial windfall – a tax refund. If you have recently received a refund, or are expecting to get one in the next few weeks, what should you do with it?

Of course, you could just spend the money on something you want, but if you’d like to maximize the financial benefits from your refund, you might want to consider other options, including the following: • Invest the money. In 2018, the average tax refund was about $2,700. For this year, it might be somewhat lower, due to changes in the tax laws and the failure of taxpayers to adjust their withholdings in response. However, if you were to receive in the neighborhood of $2,700, you’d be almost halfway to the annual IRA contribution limit, which, in 2019, is $6,000. (If you’re 50 or older, you can put in up to $7,000). If you have already “maxed out” on your IRA, you could use your refund to fill in gaps you may have in other parts of your investment portfolio.

• Pay insurance premiums. Let’s face it – nobody really likes paying insurance premiums. Yet, if you have anyone depending on you, you will certainly need life insurance, and possibly disability insurance as well. And if you want to help protect your financial resources later in life from threats such as an extended – and hugely expensive – stay in a nursing home, you also may want to consider long-term care insurance. Your tax refund could help pay for some of these premiums, boosting your cash flow during the months you would normally be making these payments.

• Contribute to a college fund. It’s never too soon to begin saving for college, which has grown increasingly expensive over the last several years. So, if you have young children, you may want to think about investing some or all of your refund into a college-savings account, such as a tax-advantaged 529 plan.

• Pay off debts. You might be able to use your refund to pay down some debts – or perhaps even pay off some of your smaller ones. The lower your monthly debt load, the more money you will have available to invest for the future.

Keep in mind, though, that you might not want to look at all debts in the same way. For example, putting extra money toward your mortgage might help you pay it off faster, but you’ll also be funding an asset – namely, your house – that might not provide you with the same liquidity as you can get from investments such as stocks and bonds.

• Help build an emergency fund. By building an emergency fund containing six to 12 months’ worth of living expenses, you can help yourself avoid dipping into your long-term investments to pay for large, unplanned-for bills, such as a major car repair or an expensive dental procedure. Your tax refund could help build such a fund, with the money ideally being placed in low-risk, liquid vehicles.

Clearly, you can help yourself make progress toward a number of your financial goals with your tax refund – so put it to good use.

“Tetrology: A Focus on Four” Exhibition Features Jenifer Cline At The Art Center The Art Center of Estes Park is pleased to announce its upcoming exhibition “Tetrology: A Focus on Four” featuring the oil paintings of Loveland plein air artist Jenifer Cline, April 26-June 2, 2019. The artist will be present at the opening reception on Friday, April 26th from 5:00–7:00 p.m., and we invite you to join us. This show is sponsored by Susan and Gil Anderson.

In this solo exhibition, artist Jenifer Cline offers art show enthusiasts a new experience. Inspired by the concept of a tetralogy, a grouping of four related creative works, Cline has assembled imaginative groupings of her most recent paintings. In so doing, she offers viewers the opportunity to engage with her paintings on a personal level as she invites them to create their own connections among what may, at first glance, seem to be disparate subjects. Cline says, “Each painting is a story that invites conversation. As an artist, I encourage people to get as close as they can to the individual paintings and, in this exhibition, to the paintings as a grouping as

Jenifer Cline is well known for her paintings of Rocky Mountain National Park and the Colorado landscape.

EPHS FFA Chapter Horse Judging Team

The Estes Park High School Future Farmers of America (FFA) Chapter formed a Horse Judging team. They have five active members Aubrey Kinley, Bailey Burke, Hailey Rasmussen, Ruth Walker, and Tatum, Kaspar. Their FFA advisor Duane Loyd asked Kathy Walker if she would be willing to coach this group of students and prep them for the upcoming FFA Career Development Event. These are contests that members compete in to test their skill learned through agricultural education instruction. Students need knowledge in horse conformation, general health, anatomy, skeletal system, tack identification, and different types of riding class's related to Western or English discipline.

The Horse Judging team competed in The Weld Central CDE Contest at Aims Community College on March 22, 2019.

They judged four halter classes for conformation, a Western Pleasure class, a Western Reining class, a fifty question written test on general horse knowledge,

and then they were asked to give reasons on one of the halter classes that they placed. In reasons you have to go before a judge and tell them as to why you placed the horses in statement within two minutes. It involves a lot of terminology of information pertaining to each horse individually.

This was the first time for the team to attend an competition and they excelled by beating the second place time by 11 points and with having one student unable to complete the judging due to a scheduled surgery that afternoon. They overcame many obstacles that day and still succeeded! Bailey was first place individual, Hailey was third place individual and Tatum was eleventh place individual.

The next contest is the State Competition on May 5 and 6 at CSU in Fort Collins. The horse judging team is working hard to prep themselves for the next level of competition.

Helping our Neighbors One Step At A Time A lady who was born in the 1940s came into Crossroads with an insurmountable need. She has owned a little house for many years and has done okay in keeping up with everything until recently. She lives on a meager social security income that requires her to keep a tight budget on everything and she’s survived so far, but now she’s in a place where she needs an intervention or things will begin to unravel quickly. She has a stairway that has become too much for her and in recent months she had to crawl on her knees up each step to get to her living area upstairs. When we heard about this it broke our hearts. Brian Schaffer, Executive Director of Crossroads Ministry, said “As I thought about this lady I was reminded of my own mother and how I would never want her to be forced into a situation where she had to crawl up her stairs as the only option of getting around. We are going to help this lady and we’re going to make it

a team effort.” This is exactly what happened! Crossroads consulted with a local builder on the project, but in the end decided to go with the installers from a chair lift company to compile with the warranty. Because of faithful donors Crossroads was able to make this happen, so this wonderful lady doesn’t have to worry about this issue anymore nor take the risk of injuring herself in the

process of getting upstairs in her house.

Schaffer said, “I can only imagine that there are others struggling with similar conditions in life and we want to make sure they are not facing this alone. Let’s commit to keep our eyes and ears open for opportunities to love our neighbors.

EVICS To Host Early Childhood Conference April 27th Estes Valley Investment in Childhood Success (EVICS) is proud to offer the 10th annual Estes Park Early Childhood Conference on April 27 in partnership with the YMCA of the Rockies. of the new weight lifting gym that is housed in our RMHC facility). Even though it has changed, I still have everything I need to produce fun and engaging sessions for my clients. From dumbbells to battling ropes - this gym is top notch!

The same could be said of the classes I instruct. I teach Boot Camp, which is a high intensity interval training (HIIT) style class, on Mondays at 8:30 a.m.! It’s such a fun group that gets together for this class! We work on core, strength training and cardio. Using different elements such as dumbbells, weighted bars, steps, etc., the class, I believe, is always different, challenging and unique!

The other class I teach is a Functional class in our Rack Room on Wednesday’s at 8:30 a.m. In this class we get to use an abundance of functional equipment many pieces of which I think are unique to our gym. Sleds, ropes, sandbags, kettlebells, heavy bags, medicine balls and BOSU balls are among my favorite tools to pull out for this engaging workout!

On Friday, Mayy 3rd the To Town T wn of Estes Park and Estes Park School District will host the Estes Park Mountain Festival!

The Mountain Festival will provide an opportunity for Estes Park students and local community members of all ages to celebrate arbor day, earth day, and our local mountain heritage.

The all-day event will be at the Estes Park Event Center and Pavilion from 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. with a full schedule of activities and events throughout the day!

Over the course of the day, the Mountain Festival will showcase local organizations, agencies, and community groups focused on land stewardship, the great outdoors, health and wellness, and Estes Park culture. All educational booths will showcase our mountain heritage through interactive activities and informational resources. Alongside these booths, all-day activities will include an archery range (3rd grade and older) with Colorado Parks and Wildlife, fire truck demos with local fire departments, live animals, a book swap through the Estes Valley Library, a strider bike course with the Estes Park Mountain Shop, historical representations of F.O. and Flora Stanley, and more!

Additionally, the Mountain Fest will feature a number of scheduled events for

attendees. All attendees are inv invited attendees n ited to nv learn how to fly-fish (8:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m.), enjoy a kid-delighted performance by Jeff and Paige (10-11 a.m.), listen to musical showcases by local first grade students (11:30-11:45 a.m.) and the High School Jazz Band (9:30-10 a.m.), view birds of prey with HawkQuest (10 a.m.-2 p.m.), watch the high school’s Cardboard Boat races (1-3 p.m.), and attend the Mayoral Proclamation at 10:10 a.m.

Food, Music and Festivity at 19th Annual “Cinco de Mayo” Estes Park’s Annual Cinco de Mayo Celebration will take place on Monday, May 6 (one day after the traditional “Cinco”) beginning at 5:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. This year’s location is the Estes Park Events Center at Stanley Fairgrounds.

Food will be served from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m., followed by a live performance later that evening by Mariachi Luna, offering the rich tradition of mariachi music. This year’s event includes door prizes, a photo booth, and music by DJ La Tocada.

“Cinco de Mayo” has become a popular celebration far and wide. The event recalls a day in 1862 when French forces attempted to seize the small town of Puebla, Mexico. The Mexican troops, comprised of local farmers and villagers, prevailed against a much stronger invading army, and their unlikely victory inspires pride still to this day. Much like St. Patrick’s Day, “Cinco” has grown into annual tradition enjoyed by many cultures worldwide.

2019 International Weight Pull Association Championships In Estes Park "Pulling for a Cure: One Pound at a Time" will be held next Saturday and Sunday, April 27-28, starting at 9 a.m. each day at the Estes Park Events Complex. It is free to attend and there will be bleacher seating and a silent auction.

The International Weight Pull Association (IWPA) is a non-profit association that promotes the sport of dog pulling through well organized, sanctioned events.

The purpose of IWPA is to promote the working heritage of all dogs. The IWPA also promotes a program to keep your dog in good physical condition with a constructive outlet for canine competition.

Dog Pulling is akin to a tractor pull.

Dogs compete to see who can pull the most weight 16 feet. They pull a wheeled cart on an earthen surface, or a sled on snow. The handler has no contact with the dog during the pull, so it is up to the dogs willingness to pull. Safety of the dog is of paramount concern. Since IWPA's organization in 1984, no dogs have been hurt in competition.

IWPA was organized in November 1984 when a group of dog pulling enthusiasts saw a need for an organization to promote this specialized sport. Our season for sanctioned pulls runs from September through March. We currently sanction around one hundred pulls a

season throughout the contiguous United States and Canada. Membership currently runs around 250 to 300 with around 400 to 600 dogs in competition.

We are open to all dogs, mixed breed or purebred.

The objective of a competition is to see which dogs (within their weight class) can pull the most weight 16 feet within one minute. A tie is broken by the dog that pulled in the least amount of time on the preceding weight.

Dogs compete within their own weight class, of which there are nine: 0-10#, 1120#, 21-40#, 41-60#, 61-80#, 81-100#, 101-125# , 126-150#, 151#and over.

2019 IWPA International Championships will take place at the Estes Park Events Complex, 1125 Rooftop Way, Estes Park.

Mattress Recycling Now Available!

Old mattresses are a disposal nightmare. Hauling them to the transfer station is a pain, and the dump fees can be costly. Each mattress or box spring takes up a whopping 40 cubic feet of landfill space. Worse yet is when a mattress is ditched by the side of the road. That’s why the League of Women Voters & Community Recycling Committee are excited to present an incredibly green and inexpensive alternative. For the first time, a mattress recycling service will be a part of Estes Recycles Day. This year, LWV & CRC are partnering with Spring Back Colorado Mattress Recycling to put that crummy mattress to good use. Spring Back’s employees break down each mattress into its individual components of steel, wood, fabric and foam, then recycle or re-purpose those elements. What’s more, Spring Back Colorado provides jobs to those who typically have barriers to employment.

A Book And Movie, Torn From Today’s Headlines By: Cheryl Homan-Wendell, Literary Services Librarian

“The Hate U Give” is a coming-of-age story by Angie Thomas that debuted at the top of the “New York Times” Young Adult Bestseller List in 2017 and remained there for fifty weeks. Interest in this acclaimed book surged again when it was made into a major motion picture.

Starr Carter, the sixteen-year-old main character, is constantly switching between two worlds—the poor, mostly black neighborhood where she lives and the wealthy, mostly white prep school that she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is soon shattered when she witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend at the hands of a police officer. Facing pressure from all sides of the community, Starr must find her voice and decide to stand up for what's right.

These events may sound familiar from headlines of recent years. The book delves deep into complex problems. But as people like Dr. Martín Carcasson emphasized at our recent Current Affairs series, we can find hope and meaningful solutions through listening and respectful dialogue.

This is definitely the kind of book you read and find yourself wanting to discuss with others. We’ll be doing just that through several gatherings in the coming weeks. It begins with a Book Discussion program on Monday, April 29 at 6 p.m. Seating is limited, so register at estesvalleylibrary.org.

We’ve been aligning our library programs with what the community has asked us for. A high priority are programs that bring readers together in

shared literary experiences, and which provide opportunities to discuss today’s current affairs. As we delve into “The Hate U Give” this season, we’re also collaborating with some key community partners.

One of those partners is Estes Valley Restorative Justice. They’ve been bringing their skills at facilitating positive discussions to several recent Library programs, and they’ll guide our conversation on April 29.

The book will also be discussed by teens at a special discussion at Estes Park High School. We thank the schools for making this possible.

As a movie, “The Hate U Give” succeeded in adapting the powerful narrative of the novel to the screen. “The best-selling novel makes for a riveting, funny, incisive big-screen drama anchored by outstanding performances, ” said Alissa Wilkinson in her film review for Vox.com.

Whether or not you read the book, mark your calendar for a special screening of “The Hate U Give” at Reel Mountain Theater on Thursday, May 2 at 7 p.m.

This event is a win-win—your private information is shredded and recycled, and all donations go to providing scholarship for EPHS students.

Items appropriate for shredding are: • Documents containing financial information—bank statements, cancelled checks, voided checks • Documents containing personal information—medical records, paycheck stubs, online purchase orders, DOB, SS number, full name and address, phone numbers, driver’s license number • Documents containing account infor-

mation—utility accounts, internet bills, property tax statements/bills • Junk Mail—anything containing a computer barcode on the front, pre-authorized credit card offers • Child and School-related mail—children’s medical records, anything with school information, report cards, authorizations for school trips etc.

Scrap Metal Collection June 8th Here is your opportunity to keep your old grill, old pots and pans, and other metal items out of the landfill. Clean up your garage, kitchen, and other areas of your home and have all these items recycled. On Saturday, June 8th, you may drop these items off at the Estes Recycles Day event at the Presbyterian Community Church of the Rockies.

This service will be provided by the Rotary Club of Estes Park and there will be no charge, though a donation to the Club’s Scholarship Fund will be greatly appreciated.

Here’s how it works. The items are first separated to remove paper, plastic, glass etc. Then they pass through radiation detectors to remove any radiation from the materials. Next they are subjected to enormous pressure to cut metals into manageable sizes. In the shredding process rollers and hammer mills crush and cut the metal into small pieces. Using large magnetic drums the ferrous materials (iron and steel) are next separated from the non-ferrous metals (aluminum, copper, brass). Further separa-

tion is achieved using magnetic currents, high pressure air flows, and liquid floating systems. Finally the process called baling compacts the pieces into large blocks to facilitate handling and transportation.

What you can bring: Barbecue grills, metal and cast iron tubs, metal car parts and wheels, pots and pans, old screws and bolts, trays, utensils, metal fasteners, damaged hinges, fence posts, and just about anything else that is steel, aluminum, copper, or brass that weighs less than 50 pounds. Our crew has not agreed to heavy lifting.

Loving Spirit Extending Thanks To The Editor, Estes Park News Loving Spirit, the Estes-based nonprofit that is changing the way we respond to grief and loss, wants to thank the YMCA of the Rockies for their continued support of our efforts to assist grieving adults in their journey of loss.

Just last month a free, weekend workshop was held at the YMCA for adults in our area who have suffered major losses in their lives.

The workshop was made possible in part because the YMCA generously made its meeting space available to us without charge. This support saved our small non-profit thousands of dollars in out-of-pocket expenses, allowing us to offer more workshops in more regions to more grieving adults.

But our partnership with the YMCA of the Rockies is about much more than meeting space. The YMCA also brings shared values, dedicated staff, professional attention to detail and a mutual dedication to alleviating the pain and suffering of others that contributes so much to the participants’ healing experiences.

Opposes Pot Shop In EP To The Editor: I am opposed to a pot shop for recreational highs here in Estes. We live in a precious place, a bowl surrounded by majestic peaks where we can get a natural high looking up. Our town is a unique national gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park attracting visitors around the world. They come to Estes for mountains, not pot.

Yes, some people are bringing it here anyway, but there are many drawbacks opening the door to our first pot shop.

One, it will bring competition and more recreational pot shops. Two, we will have more impaired drivers with slow reac-

tion responses. That’s not so great with all our tourists, drivers that have already had a too many drinks. Why add more DUIs to our town? Three, and this is a combination, our children, teenagers don’t need more of mj passed around at school, exposure to edibles, more challenges to beating the mental health suicide dilemma in this town of Larimer County.

Let’s be clear, recreational marijuana is not safe for our public health and it won’t bring us money through taxes.

Let’s get credible sources and evidence in front of our voters. Let’s keep Estes Park high on peaks, not pot.

Is The Electoral College Unfair?

Sad That RiverPlace Is Closing To The Editor: I wanted to write this letter to express how saddened I am that RiverPlace is closing their doors.

RiverPlace and the wonderful people who volunteered there were always very important to me and many others as well. When people are lost and saddened, need peace, or just someone to talk to, RiverPlace was always there to help. This will be a great loss to our community and I am praying that the lo-

cal churches might come together to be able to re-open the doors.

An idea I have is to open a place of my own, I would call it the Hope Center and it would be a place much like RiverPlace. I will be working on my idea to try to see my dream come into reality. I hope others see my plea and care to help. In the meantime, I will miss everyone at RiverPlace, thank you for being there for me.

To The Editor: There has been much discussion in recent months suggesting that the Electoral College is inherently unfair. Under the federalist system we do not vote directly for a presidential candidate but for electors from our state to represent the needs and wishes of our state in the Electoral college.

The founding fathers acknowledged that a direct election by popular vote put small states at a disadvantage. The Electoral College was designed to balance that disadvantage and prevent the

“tyranny of the majority” that could effectively disenfranchise those in states with smaller populations. There was recognition that the needs of the diverse regions of a vast nation were not uniform. While it is true that electoral votes and the “national popular vote” may, in some circumstance yield different results, that is the very balance of regional power that was designed by the framers of our Constitution. A president should have been selected by a majority of the states, not the majority of the people, giving preference to states with larger populations.

When we seek to instruct the electors from Colorado to follow the results of the “national popular vote” rather than the wishes of Colorado voters we neuter our voice and disenfranchise our people. Each vote must count and that includes the votes of those in small states.

We are a representative democracy. We vote for representatives to speak for the best interests of our state. Let’s not ignore the wisdom of a system that has served us well for over 200 years.

Who Decides For You? The approach of Easter seems to be an annual signal for news media and bloggers to start trying to explain away Jesus’ resurrection from the dead. Soon you will see magazines and newspapers running articles questioning the reality of Jesus’ escape from death. Some will say that Jesus just appeared to die on the cross but recovered in the tomb and fled.

Others will contend that the person on the cross only looked like Jesus but wasn’t really him. Some will even try to convince you that the resurrection of Jesus is not to be taken to mean that he died and now lives again.

Instead they will insist that the resurrection is really Jesus living in and through his followers.

The approach of Easter might also stir up your memory of the Easter story.

Maybe you heard it as a child. Perhaps you stop in at church this time of year and have heard it year after year. The recollection of the story of Jesus’ life after his death might stir some questions

in your own mind. Questions about life and death. Questions about your future.

Questions about whether there is a future after death. If there is, then what does that future hold?

Why not make this Easter the Easter you think through these questions. Now is the time to look at the evidence and decide these things for yourself. Don’t let news outlets and bloggers decide for you. Was Jesus really raised from the dead? How can I be sure? Is he alive even now? Does this mean that I will live even after I die? If I will live again after I die, then what difference does it make while I am still living this life?

Les Foiles Les Foiles (Leslie E Foiles) died peacefully in his sleep on March 4, 2019 in Estes Park, CO at the age of 92.

Les is survived by his three daughters: Pamela Patterson, Colorado Springs, CO; Holly Hewson, Deland, FL; Kim Foiles, Lolo, MT. He has seven grandchildren: Taylor Patterson, Steamboat Springs, CO; Julia Patterson and Kelsey Patterson both reside in Colorado Springs, CO; Brian Hewson, West Dundee, IL; Caitlyn Hewson, Portland, ME; Quinn Andrews, Ferndale, Washington; Chloe Andrews, Lolo, MT. Les is preceded in death by his wife, Barbara, parents, his brother, Lee Foiles, his two sisters, Ruth Foiles and Gail Pospahala.

Les was born on September 27, 1926 in Kampsville, IL to Elba Foiles and Alice Kennedy-Foiles. Les attended Boulder High School. He enlisted in the Navy right before his 18th birthday in 1944. He was a Fireman 1st class.

He married Barbara Lynn, who he met through a blind date. After moving back to Illinois, Les worked at Western Electric/ATT as an Environmental Safety engineer for 36 years. In 1987, he retired and moved with Barb to Estes Park. Their daughters remember him as a funny, compassionate and talented man; famous for his jokes and mechanical talents.

Les had a passion for cars. He built a bright red Cobra kit car when he first moved to Estes and loved to drive it on (only) sunny days- top down, of course! He often shared his joy by giving rides to others, including nursing home residents. Such a treat for all!

Les talked his way out of at least one speeding ticket by inviting the policeman to look at the spotless turbo car engine. He could be called upon to fix auto issues anytime.

Les also loved to ski. He joined a ski club in Illinois and fully realized his passion once he moved to Colorado.

Walter “Walt” Bedinger A memorial service will be held for Walter “Walt” Bedinger on Thursday, April 25, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at Presbyterian Community Church of the Rockies. Walt died in Greeley on August 23, 2018. He was 98 years old. Memorial donations may be made to The Community Church or The Rotary Club of Estes Park Foundation in care of Allnutt Funeral Service 1302 Graves Ave. Estes Park, CO 80517.

He and his buddies went on weekly ski trips to various slopes in Colorado. He skied well into his 80s.

Les was extremely proud of being a WW2 vet.

He loved being on the Honor flight tour to DC with several friends.

He toured the National Museum of the Pacific war last year and wore his WW2 Veteran hat frequently.

Les was a dedicated volunteer throughout his life. He mentored school children: read to the young ones, helped the older ones with math and social issues. His was actively involved in his church, Community Church of the Rockies. He made multiple trips with church group to La Puente in Alamosa. He helped design and build the parts of the woman’s shelter. He was active in the Lion’s Club for over 20 years. Held positions of President and treasurer. He helped run the concession stand at the Estes fair grounds for many years. Les designed part of the new addition at the Salud clinic and spent countless hours assisting with the build. He won multiple service awards, among them Estes Park 2010 Volunteer of the Year.

Les thrived in the company of others and enjoyed folks of all ages. He met weekly with the Aviation club, Car Club and Knights of the Belt Buckle.

He enjoyed meeting his friends for a beer at Ed’s Cantina as well as other local spots. Les had a litany of jokes that he loved to tell at every encounter.

A celebration of life service will be held for Les on Saturday, August 17 at the American Legion. Mary Alice Jessen Edwards Mary Alice Jessen Edwards, 83 of Scottsdale, AZ and Estes Park, CO, passed away peacefully on April 12, 2019 with her family by her side. Mary was born on August 29, 1935, at home on Sylamore Creek near Mountain View, Arkansas to Henry and Mae Jessen. She was the 5th of 10 children. They moved to the town of Mountain View in 1941. She worked at the Family owned Drug Store.

She attended Mountain View High School where she was a star basketball player, a member of the Yearbook club, and the Future Homemakers of America. She was voted best dressed of her senior class. She graduated in 1954.

After graduation she moved to Denver. She worked at American National Bank and Skaggs Drug Center, where she met her husband Renz. They were married in Pocatello, ID in 1959 and shared nearly 60 years of marital bliss.

They were blessed with three daughters and Mary loved being a mother and a wife!

Mary loved spending time with her family and friends. She was active at both churches, St. Anthony on the Desert, Scottsdale, AZ and St. Bartholomew’s in Estes Park, CO. She was involved in community activities including PTA at Barcelona, Cocopah, and Chaparral Schools, Informed Parents, Welcome Wagon, Phoenix Cotillion, Election Boards, Girl Scouts, Christian Women’s Groups and Summer Residents Association. She worked as a Sales Representative for Wrigley Gum. She loved

living in Estes Park, CO and invited everyone to visit. Her favorite memories include live music events in the community—especially Brad Fitch concerts!

Nothing made Mary happier than being in the midst of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She felt her most important role was to preserve family relationships and keep everyone connected, which she did! She will be remembered for her incredible devotion to her family and friends. Family was everything to her.

She is survived by her husband, Renz, daughters, Robyn Getz (Jeff), Melody Taylor (Jack), and Shauna Duell (Craig, predeceased), nine grandchildren, David (Becky), Daniel (Claudia), Taylor (Stephanie), Joshua, Shane, Jordan, Austin, Stephen, and Faith, as well as Great Grandchildren Micah, Josiah, Zachary (predeceased), and Olivia.

Heaven received a woman of grace whose smile could light the stars. She loved her family fiercely and shared her kindness freely with others.

A Celebration of Life will be held at St. Anthony on the Desert Episcopal Church on Saturday, April 27th, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. 12990 E. Shea Blvd, Scottsdale, AZ.
