A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held yesterday at the new Town of Estes Park Water Division facility. Mayor Koenig and Trustees Bangs, MacAlpine and Younglund joined Town staff and others for the ceremony. The facility, which once housed a concrete plant, was refurbished to include eight offices, a conference room, testing laboratory, training room, equipment storage room and three shop bays. The design was created by local architect, Joe Calvin, of Interstice Architectural Studio. In an effort to save on costs, Water Division staff com-

pleted some of the construction prep work on the facility. Mayor Koenig commented "The facility helps the Water Division after having outgrown the previ-

ous facility by creating a functional workspace for all Division staff with room to grow."

Utilities Director Reuben Bergsten added "It's our water staff that makes infrastructure improvements happen. This much-needed new shop sends a message that we value our Water Department."

Mayor Koenig closed the ceremony by stating "I’d like to close by thanking everyone, including the Town Board and community, for making this important investment which will benefit our community for generations to come."

Following the ribbon-cutting, attendees participated in a brief tour of the facility.

Community Development Director Randy Hunt To Retire In October Town of Estes Park Community Development Director, Randy Hunt, has announced his retirement from the Town effective October 1, 2021. Town Administrator Travis Machalek commented, “Our community and the entire Estes Valley has benefited greatly from Randy’s extensive education and municipal planning experience since he joined the Town in 2016. He has been a strong and focused leader, and a valued team member. We regret seeing him go, but we’re happy to see him embark on a well-deserved retirement.”

Hunt commented, “As I said when I was first hired, it’s an awesome and delicate responsibility to sustain this quality of life while helping grow the community - that challenge appeals to me. After over five years in Estes Park, I am proud of the work we’ve accomplished includ-

ing amendments to make our Code more rational and accessible, ensuring that all stakeholder voices (not just the loudest) are heard and respected, confirming the value of professionalism and expertise in planning and buildingsafety matters... the list goes on. I didn't get to build the pyramids - that takes decades! But I hope I’m leaving a solid foundation of blocks that others can build on to reach the sky.” Hunt will retire to Laramie, Wyoming.

New Infrastructure Coming For Seasonal Paid Parking The Town Board will consider information regarding the upcoming seasonal paid parking program at both the study session and regular meeting on April 13.

At the study session, staff from Public Works and the Town’s professional parking operator, The Car Park, will present an update on the seasonal paid parking initiative which will begin May 28. The presentation will address public outreach, permits, technology, staffing, and performance metric reporting. Installation of 10 new payment kiosks and informational signage at eight downtown public parking lots is expected to be begin April 12.

At the Regular Town Board meeting scheduled for April 13, Public Works staff will present plans for a wayfinding pilot project, which is proposed to begin in late April in the downtown area. The proposed pilot would include the removal of inconsistent, aged and unreadable parking and visitor information signs throughout downtown and in the adjacent Highway 7, US 36 and US 34 corridors, followed by replacement with new parking, transit and visitor information signs.

The proposed parking wayfinding pilot signage would represent a first step in implementation of a larger community wayfinding project, which was a key recommendation from the 2018 Downtown Plan (www.estes.org/downtownplan).

Public Works staff identified parking and transit wayfinding signage as a good place to initiate work on downtown wayfinding because of its likely immediate benefit to visitors and locals looking to navigate the congested downtown area during the busy summer season. Another benefit of start-

ing with an emphasis on parking wayfinding is to clearly identify which parking areas are available for public parking, which are free and which will require seasonal payment beginning May 28, 2021.

An easily recognizable identity of all public parking lots in downtown will be established through consistent use of color and graphics on new signs used both to guide visitors to the public lots and confirm their arrival at the public parking destination. While extensive public outreach is typically sought for this type of significant and visually impactful project prior to installation, Public Works staff will be recommending a “road test” of this integrated signage proposal to the Town Board on April 13, so that community members and visitors can react to and provide feedback on actual sign size, placement, materials and information presented prior to installing more expensive permanent parking lot signage.

At the Town Board’s regular meeting on April 13, Public Works staff will present an overview of the parking wayfinding signage pilot project, including installation information, sign design, project cost and a contract with E3 Enterprises, Inc., a Loveland-based company for sign production and installation. The contractor’s bid amount to construct the pilot project is $121,590. Further details on this project can be found on the Public Works webpage (www.estes.org/wayfinding).

Welcome Is Who We Are And What We Do A few days ago, a newcomer, who had moved to Estes Park last fall, requested to talk with me about our community.

After the requisite introductions and chit chat, she shared with me that she’s been staying home—not because of the pandemic—for fear of the unknown.

Having grabbed my attention, she went on to describe media coverage of events in numerous locations and tell of personal experiences she’d had in places that she previously lived. Then, getting to the point of the call, she asked whether, she an Asian person of color, is welcome here?

Continuing, she said she was looking for signs that Estes is a welcoming community. When out and about, would people support her should someone be rude or threatening? What assurance could I, the mayor, provide her?

Honestly, I was having difficulty wrapping my mind around her questions. I know Estes Park to be a nice, safe place to live and work, with townspeople who’re friendly and engaged. Where annually, four and a half million people from all over the world come to visit.

Why would anyone be unkind to her?

Her response: “Yes.” I was pleased to report that the Town of Estes Park is already involved in equity and diversity education, about our multilingual signage and businesses.

As for intervening during in public harassment incident?

She shared that wellmeaning bystanders are often too shocked, stunned or afraid to intervene during a harassment incident and then she offered up a free hour-long seminar about Bystander Intervention by Hollaback, saying it would provided me a deeper perspective and skills to employ should I find myself in such a situation.

As many of you know, I can be pretty forthright. What you might not know is that I am willing to learn so, I took the seminar.

I found it to be thoughtfully done and the class participation enjoyable. I left with five techniques for intervening: distract, delegate, document, delay and direct. Each takes into account the presenting situation and the personality of the person who’s intervening. The month of April is a month of celebration. Spring is enchanting us with delightful colors and promises of good things to come. Make merry! The days are getting longer and warmer; shadows are growing shorter. Whoop it up! It’s National Poetry Month. Have a party!

Yes, National Poetry Month. Every year when April comes and I devote a month of columns to poetry, I worry I’ll turn some readers off. I get it. Not everyone has an appetite for poetry. But every year I am surprised by the number of readers who contact me to say how much they appreciate the month I dedicate to poetry. They’re the ones who know poetry is not a breeze but it’s not a burden either.

To understand a poem you shouldn’t just read it quickly, one time through. I suggest you read a poem slowly, then read it again, and read it a third time aloud. The key to reading or reciting poetry is to be deliberate. The pace makes a huge difference in the effect of the verse. A poem needs time to sink in, to be absorbed.

Spend time with a poem and, if it’s one you like, it will become a friend. That sounds corny to some I suppose, but I’m serious. Poetry affects the mind and heart like music. Upbeat poems (and Louis Armstrong’s What a Wonderful World) are for happy days; solemn verses (and Samuel Barber’s Adagio for Strings) for somber moods. A gift of a poem, written or recited with you in mind, can have the same affect as that mixed tape your first love gave you, with each song selected just for you. The music and the poems remain stitched into the quilt of your life, even decades later.

With that in mind, there are numerous ways to participate in National Poetry Month. The first one: find a poem you’d like to become familiar with and follow the steps we just went over. (Read it slowly, read it again, and one more time—aloud.

Do this more than once—for a week. Then see how you like the poem.) Here are other ideas, suggested by the Academy of American Poets: • Sign-up for Poem-a-Day at www.poets.org. When you do, you’ll find a poem in your email inbox each morning. Some you’ll like, others you won’t. Just like breakfast cereal. And people.

• Record yourself reading a poem, and share why you chose that work online using the hashtag #ShelterinPoems. Be sure to tag @poetsorg on Twitter and Instagram. (I have no idea what this means or how to do it and I don’t have grandkids to tell me. You’ll have to figure it out on your own—or get your own grandkids to help.)

• Subscribe to the Poem-a-Day podcast.

(This is not a big time commitment. Each poem, read aloud, is two or three minutes.)

• Check out a book or an e-book of poetry from the library. (Just stay safe.)

• Begin your virtual meetings or classes by reading a poem. (Go ahead. You’ll impress your colleagues. I promise.)

• Talk to the teachers in your life about Teach This Poem and encourage students in grades 5–12 to participate in the Dear Poet project. (Even if you’re not a student, these are cool projects. Find more info at www.poets.org) • Find poetry events and resources near you. Go to www.poets.org and enter your state in the filter or your zip code in the

search field. You can also click on Explore Your State to find out more information about your local poets laureate, festivals, conferences, writing programs, literary organizations, landmarks, and more.

• Browse Poems for Kids on the www.poets.org site. Here’s one to get you started (this poem is a couplet, meaning each stanza is two rhyming lines) : “maggie and milly and molly and may” by e e cummings (1894–1962) maggie and milly and molly and may went down to the beach (to play one day) and maggie discovered a shell that sang so sweetly she couldn't remember her troubles, and milly befriended a stranded star whose rays five languid fingers were; and molly was chased by a horrible thing which raced sideways while blowing bubbles: and may came home with a smooth round stone as small as a world and as large as alone.

For whatever we lose (like a you or a me) it's always ourselves we find in the sea Read this poem once and you get the sense you’re enjoying a playful children’s poem. Read it slowly the second time and see if you discover any symbolism. Take your time. Read it once more—aloud— and you might find secrets hidden in the treasures found by each girl.

There are more National Poetry Month activities but we’ll save them for next week. I’ll wrap up this week with a poem I wrote in honor of my parents—the best wavers ever: Waving Goodbye We walk you to the car, say the things we say to delay goodbye.

You jingle your keys, ready to leave but not really.

Finally, you lower into the seat, pull the door closed and start the car. We step back, stand hip to hip and watch as you shift into reverse and roll down the driveway.

We wave at your tail lights.

We wave at your blinker, your arm out the window, a flash.

As soon as you turn, we dash inside, through the house, out the back, where we watch you drive down the hill.

We wave and wave. We see you still.

You honk your horn and then you are gone.

We keep waving.

A timetrial interval start, of three-second spacing, will allow participants adequate spacing. ” A special commemorative race shirt will be available to the public for purchase on Race Day for $20, Morris added.

Following the Duck Waddle 5K, top finishers will receive awards and prizes. These include 1st and 2nd place male and female overall. Additional awards will be presented to 1st and 2nd place, male and female, in the following categories: 13 and under; 14-16; 17-19; 2029; 30-39; 40-49; 50-59; 60-69; 70-79; and over 80.

A highlight of the Duck Waddle is getting a Duck Adoption in your name, and the chance to win a prize. Top prizes this year include two vacation packages donated by Delaware North and cash awards of $5,000, $2,500 or $1,000.

The Estes Park Running Club encourages Duck Waddlers to adopt additional ducks at www.epduckrace.org/ adopt-ducks. The running club is one of 65 Participating Organizations in the 2021 Rotary Duck Race. For each adopted, $19 will be returned to the Participating Organization that the Duck Adopter chooses.

Volunteers: Truly Essential Workers

April is National Volunteer Month.

Volunteers have always been critical to the success of our communities, but the events of the past year have really brought that into focus. Our ability to be optimistic about 2021 is, in part, significantly impacted by the work of our volunteer force. Since last March, volunteers have stepped into the gap to ensure that our communities are safe and able to navigate the new normal that Covid has brought.

One group of essential workers is our healthcare volunteers. Currently the new Covid vaccines are being administered and volunteers have played an important role. Not only have volunteers helped to inoculate patients, but a brave group actually made it possible for the vaccines to exist. During the development phase, thousands of volunteers put their own personal safety at risk by agreeing to serve in the clinical trials and be monitored to test the efficacy of the vaccines.

Also, it seems like ages ago, but last Spring there were thousands of volunteers helping to locate and manufacture PPE for hospital workers, when the shortage was most dire. Sewing ma-

chines all across the United States were being used to produce some of the most creative and fashionable masks the world has ever seen.

Another group of volunteers who have made a difference include those who serve on governance boards for nonprofit organizations. So many nonprofits had to quickly develop plans to operate during a very fluid and challenging situation. Some organizations saw huge increases in the number of people needing to access their services, as millions of people lost their jobs seemingly overnight. Other organizations had to close their doors temporarily and then figure out how and when to reopen.

Many community organizations are still closed today, and unfortunately there have been permanent closures of nonprofits from across the spectrum, from the arts to zoos. Governing boards have had the thankless job of making decisions that are very difficult, especially since there is still so much that is unclear about the days and weeks that lie ahead.

Lastly, fundraising volunteers have truly been heroes over the past year.

Fundraising volunteers have always been important, but during this pandemic they have been invaluable. Many nonprofits are not able to employ as many fundraising staff as they would like. Volunteers truly serve as an extension of the labor force and allow organizations to reach more people and increase their impact.

Volunteers are an important part of the fabric of society all year long, not just in April. Typically, they are very humble and too busy working to seek out kudos, but they do deserve our gratitude. So, when you see a volunteer, be sure to thank them for their service - they are truly making a difference.

Lory McDonald is one of a dozen volunteers who help the Elizabeth Guild Thrift Store run smoothly. Plus, she loves to bake and brings delicious chocolate chip cookies to the store! She volunteers at the thrift shop one day a week. She has been a cashier for the past three years. “I like the people here and the people I meet here,” she said recently.

“It is a well-organized business and I like seeing things re-used rather than thrown away. I also like greeting customers and helping them find things.”

Lory lived in Westminster for 35 years.

She worked as a Montessori teacher for most of her career guiding the growth of children from age two to seven. “My (school) wardrobe came from thrift shops,” she said. And her best thrift shop find? That came in the form of a musical instrument – a keyboard – for one of her two now-grown daughters who still uses

it 15 years on. “Shopping at a thrift store is a treasure hunt,” she said.

When it came time for retirement, Lory and her husband of 40 years moved to Estes Park. She may not be a skier, but she loves the mountains. Now, four years into retirement, she keeps very busy quilting and sewing. Many of the quilts she works on are sent overseas through her church. She also made 1,500 masks in the early months of the pandemic. Some of the masks stayed in the community, others went to school districts, some went overseas and others went to the Navajo Nation. “I drew the line at 1,500 masks,” she said.

“Then my daughter wanted a few so I made three more bringing the total to 1,503 exactly.”

Also early in the pandemic she bought a large quantity of flour. “I like to bake for friends,” she said. “I never thought I'd use all that flour but it's nearly gone,” she added. Lory also appreciates the fact that she is one of many Elizabeth Guild volunteers who see their labor turned into tangible support for the local hospital. Proceeds from thrift shop sales are used to buy new medical equipment and provide scholarships to Estes Park Health employees.

The Elizabeth Guild Thrift Store and Lizzie's Boutique are located at 427 W. Elkhorn Avenue. The store hours and donation hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Guild has been serving the Estes Valley for more than 40 years. For more information phone (970) 586-7205.

AARP Tax-Aide: Appointments Available Through May 15 With the federal and state tax filing deadlines now extended, the local AARP Tax-Aide program has added additional appointment times during April and May. This free program is especially geared to serve seniors and low-income tax filers. Volunteers have completed their first wave of clients, and there are currently appointments available for those who have not yet signed up.

Since 2005, the Estes Valley Library has been the local host site for the AARP Foundation’s Tax-Aide services.

Guided by the national program, the service is staffed locally by volunteers who train in tax law and certify with the IRS. The Library partners by dedicating space, scheduling appointments, and providing information to those using the service. This year’s

program offers in-Library appointments, adapted to COVID-19 safety protocols.

The Estes Park Nonprofit Resource Center (EPNRC) is always busy doing good in the neighborhood, but sometimes we are asked what we actually do?

Our mission is to provide tools that support, connect, and inspire community nonprofits. But what does that look like? We believe that strong nonprofits make for a strong community and this guides our actions and services.. Facilitating collaboration, keeping the needs of nonprofits in the mind of community leaders, and ensuring our partners have what they need to serve the community often happens behind the scenes. In other words, we don’t tutor or mentor kids, or offer a food pantry to a community member. However, we do support the nonprofits that provide those services. Here are a few examples that illustrate how we create impact in the Estes Valley.

SUPPORT Financial support for nonprofits exists in Estes Park. We are a philanthropic community. However, there are over 70 nonprofits serving Estes Valley and we are all asking the same limited number of funders and donors for support. And none of it is ever guaranteed.

In order to meet income goals and be resilient fundraisers, nonprofits must diversify sources of funding.

One way EPNRC supports local nonprofits is through access to a national database of funders outside of Estes Park. The Foundation Directory Online is the premier resource for locating in-depth information about grantmakers and their grants. It includes almost one million grant opportunities from about 90,000 grantmakers. Last month, nonprofits were invited to learn more about this database and six local organizations have since made appointments to search the database. We are excited to see what innovative doors this database opens for our community service organizations.

CONNECT EPNRC represents our community on many committees and groups that help with everything from crisis recovery to planning for the future. We often sit at the table with government, economic development, and business agencies as well as regional nonprofit partners.

One group EPNRC participates in is the Larimer County Fires Long Term Recovery Group, which supports fire survivors with resources. This group is

co-chaired by Volunteers of America (VOA) and United Way of Larimer County (UWLC). EPNRC is just one of more than 30 active partners. We lean on each other to tap into case management, emotional support and wellbeing resources, material donations, debris removal, and more. We ensure Estes Park stays connected and benefits from down valley resources.

The Long Term Recovery Group had backpacks to give away to kids in fire areas. They wanted to give them to Estes Park. EPNRC connected them to Bright Christmas. Bright Christmas has been sponsoring families in need at Christmas for over 35 years; they play “Santa” to roughly 300-350 local kids each year. They also provide school supplies to as many as 120 students each year. Now, they have backpacks to utilize in this vital community program.

INSPIRE At the onset of the pandemic EPNRC received a grant to help support food delivery to the Latinx population. This was in partnership with Crossroads and Mountain Home Café. When Safeway Foundation was ready to give out money at the height of COVID through their Nourishing Neighbors grant, they reached out. EPNRC was not in the business of feeding people directly, but received the grant on behalf of the community and passed much of the funds on to partners such as the American Legion, food trucks, and local restaurants. While EPNRC did not cook any food, we inspired a Nourishing Network which provided over 3000 meals. In this case, food acted as a gateway to make sure community members knew how to access other essential services from local nonprofits. Throughout 2020, people accessed more social services and many were seeking services for the first time.

Sometimes, it is hard to see facilitation and support services. But we are here. The Nonprofit Resource Center has been supporting, connecting, and inspiring area nonprofits since 2003.

Peyton Wilkerson Rides For Team USA Middle School Students Making A Difference To Reduce Wildfire Risk Middle School students are determined to “Make A Difference With Wildfire” (M.A.D. with wildfire) as they run a school wide contest April 16th- May 3rd.

The main point of the contest is to make our community more fire safe. Living in the wildland urban interface raises the risk we face for wildfire as we all learned last fall. Determined to do something about the potential risks a team of 6th grade students have been working for a few months on an idea that even middle school students can do something significant to reduce fire risk. Volunteering their time, they have created a contest that benefits everyone, and they hope the idea is catchy.

The “MAD With Wildfire” contest can be entered by any student who is willing to take steps to reduce the risk of fire damage to their property, or to gather important items kept in their homes to be “set” in the event of an emergency.

The idea of a contest seemed the best way to get many students involved. Having seen other communities burn and experiencing the close call last October the decision was made to encourage students to take steps to make their property “Firewise”. Firewise is a trademarked program that encourages property mitigation to improve the possibility of saving homes and structures threatened by wildfire. After investigating further, the plan enlarged to include the steps in the “Ready, Set, Go” plans endorsed by the Estes Valley Fire Protection District.

Building on an idea a team of students had a few years ago to do basic mitigation work for neighbors in the community the team this year had to contend with Covid restrictions so they decided

“why not let the mitigation movement start with us.” “What a perfect time for the contest during Earth Day celebration and while we have the spring cleanup bug” teacher Steve Johnson mentioned to his volunteer team. As the students have prepared for the contest to kick off they have been gathering prizes to offer for those who show the most mitigation or preparation work done between April 16th and May 3rd.

Prizes include, Mustang Mountain Coaster rides, Rapid Transit rafting tickets, and Open Air Adventure Park tickets. Many participation prizes have been donated by E. P. Lumber, Ace Hardware, and Park supply and drink and snack options by several local restaurants.

The volunteers who created the contest idea are also competing for a grant through the RISE Colorado challenge.

The Rise Challenge is a competition among colorado schools to make a difference in their community to minimize natural hazard damage. Our middle school has made the cut to be one of five final entries in the RISE Challenge. Students would like residents to show your support by taking similar action on your properties. Clearing flammable items within 5 feet of a home, raking and trimming shrubs and low “Ladder fuels” within 30 feet of home and taking other firewise precautions. Inside your home you can prepare for an extended power outage and have a tub of important items to take in an emergency as well as communication plans, and pre-planned meeting locations with family. Take a moment to follow the lead of our middle school students and make a difference with wildfire hazards.

Estes Park Learning Place Is Now Open For In-Person GED Testing

The Estes Park Learning Place is excited to announce that their GED testing program is now reactivated and open for in-person GED testing and support. The GED testing program had been deactivated during the past year due to COVID concerns. Candidates interested in signing up to take a GED test in-person at the Estes Park Learning Place should contact GED.com or call 1-877-392-6433 to schedule their test.

All of the staff involved with the GED testing at the Learning Place have been fully vaccinated. The Estes Park Learning Place has safety procedures in place for all GED candidates to follow.

GED test candidates must wear a mask during the testing experience.

Currently the GED testing schedule offers openings on Mondays, Tuesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. However, schedule accommodations can be made to meet the needs of GED candidates by calling the Estes Park Learning Place at 970-577-0020.

The Estes Park Learning Place also offers GED preparation support with one-on-one tutoring available. Interested persons should contact the Estes Park Learning Place to begin to “unlock your dreams”.

Peyton Wilkerson was selected to represent Team USA in the Pan American Continental Championship Mountain Bike Race in Puerto Rico on March 26.

The race brings together the top riders from across North, South and Central America to compete.

Of the 46 riders in the Juniors Division, Peyton placed 12th in his first ever international race! The top rider was from Colombia with Mexico taking second and third place.

The route was five laps of an approximately four mile course.

Peyton spent the week leading up to the race at the Olympic Village in Salinas, PR with top riders from around the Americas.

This kicks off Peyton’s racing season with several races between now and the USA Mountain Bike National Championship Race in Winter Park in July.

There will be something for everyone--water-saving tips, challenges, crafts, and projects-and even some special gifts.

Wildlife Talks On April 15, our monthly online Wildlife Talk will focus on “Coyotes, Most Misunderstood Animals,” by Jared Gricoskie, who owns and operates Yellow Wood Guiding. Jared is an experienced naturalist, well-versed in the behaviors and biology of our wildlife.

On April 22, to help us understand water as a vital resource, we will have two speakers, Kimberly Mihelich, from Northern Water and Amanda Simmons from the Colorado Rural Water Association, who will explain how water flows to and from Estes and how its volume is affected by periodic droughts and persistent climate change.

For Students Young students can color the following scene of our watershed that shows our many rivers and water bodies. We challenge older students older to illustrate our watershed. These can be maps, diagrams, or illustrations showing the four rivers, forests, or wildlife that make up our watershed. CARRI Director, Scott Rashid Releases New Book On Northern Saw-whet Owls

Members of the Colorado Avian Research and Rehabilitation Institute (CARRI) are proud to announce that their director, Scott Rashid has recently published his 6th book entitled, Northern Saw-whet Owl, The Deep Woods Gnome.

This book details the natural history of one of Colorado’s smallest owls and the work that members of CARRI have been doing to learn about the species and try to increase their numbers by building and placing nest boxes for them.

Throughout the pages of Northern Saw-whet Owl the Deep Woods Gnome, you will read about the work that members of CARRI have been doing with species. For example, Northern Saw-

whet Owls nest in abandoned Northern Flicker cavities, but readily take to nest boxes that are built to the proper specifications and placed in the proper habitat.

Members of CARRI have built and placed more than 80 boxes throughout the Estes Valley for these owls to nest in. The owls frequently begin their courtship in January and February and begin nesting in March and April, but have been documented nesting as late as June and July.

izing for a female. The territorial call of the Northern Saw-whet Owl is a series of whistled toots kind of, toot, toot, toot, toot, toot, toot, toot, that frequently continues for several hours after dark.

Once a female has accepted a male, they will move throughout their territory calling to let other owls know that area is taken. When nesting in their nest boxes, female owls have raised as many as seven owlets, but when they nest in a Northern Flicker cavity, they seldom raise more than two owlets, as that is all the room there is in a woodpecker home.

Northern Saw-whet Owls prefer deer mice over any other creature to dine

upon. They also consume voles, chipmunks, bats and small birds including finches, sparrows, warblers, and occasionally insects. The owlets often begin peering from their nests at about threeand-a-half weeks after hatching and fledge at about

four weeks.

Each fall the females and young wander away from their nesting areas to search for a safe place to winter. Due to the birds being highly migratory, members of CARRI set up a series of nets to capture and band the owls before they leave the Estes Valley. They have banded over 300 Northern Saw-whet Owls since they began the project in 2007. One of their banded birds was re-captured live and released in Eastern Pennsylvania!

Five Fun Facts About… The Common Merganser By: Dawn Wilson

This week’s featured animal is the common merganser. Now this may be one of those animals that you are wondering why I include it in a column about wildlife in Estes Valley.

Well, as we enter bird migration season, keep a close eye out for these birds. The mergansers that migrate spend the winters deep in the Southwest U. S., but some will also stay in warmer parts of Colorado throughout the year. In Estes Park, a few will hang around Lake Estes in the winter and a

few more will stop over as they migrate north to summer breeding locations.

Here are a few more fun facts.

1. Common mergansers are the largest of the three merganser species in the U.S. The other two are hooded and redbreasted.

2. Common mergansers have serrated edges along their bills to help catch and hold their favorite food, fish. Because of this feature, common mergansers are in a group of birds referred to as “sawbills.”

3. From a distance, the head of a male

common merganser appears black, but it actually has a beautiful dark green sheen. Female common mergansers have a rust-colored crown, complete with a more noticeable head crest than the male.

4. Although common mergansers are most commonly seen near lakes and rivers, they actually nest in tree cavities up to a mile from water.

5. Common mergansers have large clutches of about six to 17 eggs. After the eggs hatch, the babies will follow mom

— the sole provider for the ducklings — around in a long train. Sometimes broods will join together into larger groups of 40 or more ducklings.

WE SORROW...BUT NOT AS THOSE WHO HAVE NO HOPE

The special day known as Easter has come and gone. To many it was just another holiday, and was enjoyed as such. To others it was one of the two days each year that they attend a local celebration at a local church…celebrating Jesus Christ’s birth, and His resurrection. To many others it is a special Sunday of many that they attend at their local church…realizing the tremendous message that was shared by the event that happened long ago when Jesus rose from the dead, signifying something that will be happening to all of us as well. So how has the event of Easter impacted your life and mine?

This past week my wife and I, along with thousands and thousands of others viewed the memorial service for Officer Eric Talley. His death, and that of nine others, shocked our area and our nation the week before. As we listened to all of the memories and tributes that were shared about Officer Talley and viewed the touching activities of that service, listening to and watching…and very personally sharing…the outpouring of grief that was experienced by those who had lost a family member, a friend, a fellow officer, and true servant of the Boulder community, it was pointed out that this was ‘not the end’, that because of his faith in and love for God and Christ and people, the ‘best is yet to come’.

The Apostle Paul once wrote that such people are different. They “sorrow not, as people who have no hope.” He went on: “For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also who sleep in Jesus will God bring with Him.” As a result, whenever I hear the ‘End of Watch’ announcement, that always bring me to tears, I can rejoice in the ‘Amazing Grace’ musical message that follows. I am reminded again of the old story of the person who, as she talked about future funeral arrangements, told her children, “When I am placed in the casket, be sure to put a fork in my clasped hands.” Her children were stumped by her request so she went on to explain, “When I was growing up and we often went to people’s homes for dinner, I remember the statement that was often made. ‘Be sure to keep your fork, dessert is coming!’ and I always knew that the best was yet to come.” She said: “When my life is over here, I know…and I want everyone else at my funeral to know, that the ‘best for me is yet to come!” Thus, like her, we sorrow not, because we have such hope.

I like the way that a contemporary author illustrated this dying experience. He said: “Suppose you are walking past my farm one day and saw me crying. I am sitting there, by a furrowed row, weeping uncontrollably. Concerned, you approach me and ask what is wrong. I look up from under my John Deere tractor hat and extend a palm full of seeds in your direction. “My heart breaks for the seeds!” Between sobs I say, “The seeds will be placed in the ground and covered with dirt. They will decay and I will never see them again.” What do you say? Most likely, you explain the basic principle of farming…out of the decay of the seed comes the birth of a plant. You say, gently, “Do not bemoan the burial of the seed. Don’t you know that you will soon witness a mighty miracle of God? Given time and tender care this tiny kernel will break from its prison of soil and blossom into a plant far beyond its dreams. And from that plant great fruit will come.”

When I view a funeral I am reminded that this is an experience that I, one day…all too soon…will share. I remember the story of the man walking through the cemetery reading the inscriptions on the gravestones. He came to one with this advice: “Remember friend, when passing by, as you are now, so once was I. As I am now, soon you will be, prepare for death and follow me.” Returning to his home, he pondered those words, then engraved a response on a piece of plywood, which he placed next to the headstone the next day. It read, simply: “To follow you, I’m not content, until I know which way you went!” We all will ‘follow’ that person…in death…someday. What will be the results when our ‘End of Watch’ call comes? Let’s hope that all who know us will have a confident hope of the wonderful ‘plant’ that will result from our ‘decaying seed’. May ours be the ‘resurrection unto life’ that Jesus promised those who have served Him. Bob Lewis

Colorado Children’s Book Author To Host Virtual Reading Colorado children’s book author Fleur Bradley’s, Midnight at the Barclay Hotel (Viking/Penguin Random House) was just announced as a finalist for the Colorado Book Award in the Juvenile Literature category.

There will be a virtual reading event hosted by Colorado Humanities on April 9th, 2021 at 7 p.m. Go to https://coloradohumanities.org/ to view the event.

Fleur Bradley wrote Midnight at the Barclay Hotel after visiting Estes Park’s Stanley Hotel, and being inspired by the atmospheric setting and ghostly tales after taking a ghost hunting tour. The fictional Barclay Hotel is modeled after the Stanley, and has a strong Colorado connection. Bradley routinely does author

visits to schools, and is an avid advocate for reluctant readers.

She regularly speaks at educator and library conventions on best practices to reach reluctant readers. “I hope that my books spark a fire in kids who may not enjoy reading just yet. I’m a big believer that it’s about finding the right book for those reluctant readers. I love Colorado, and wanted the setting for Midnight at the Barclay Hotel to reflect that,” Fleur Bradley says of her children’s mystery, which made NPR’s Best of 2020 Book List, and was recently nominated for the Agatha Award for Best Children’s YA as well. “This is why it means so much to me that the book is a finalist for the Colorado Book Award. It’s truly an honor.”

Congratulations to Atlas Rhode, the Estes Park High School Student of the Week for April 9, 2021.

At EPHS, Atlas is in the Environmental Club. He said, “I enjoy being in the club because I can see the difference being made by our group with the equipment, and systems we have in place. My favorite class this year is my free hour because I can go home and catch up on my work and relax before my next class.” He lettered his freshman year in cross country and his current GPA is 4.1.

Outside of school he likes to hike, backpack and run. His favorite places to go are here in Estes Park and Utah.

Estes Grows Readers: The Month Of The Young Child Did you know that one thousand trillion synapses are formed in a baby’s brain during the first eight months of life? Synapses are pathways between nerve cells. When we read aloud to a young child—including babies—we are giving them the brain power of a lifetime.

With so much at stake during those early years of life, it’s a great time to ask, “What can each of us in the Estes Valley do to ensure kids have regular opportunities of being read aloud to?”

April is the Month of the Young Child. We’ll be sharing ideas in the weeks ahead—and welcoming your ideas too. This week, let’s start with the basics: Parents — you’ve got this!

Simple activities like reading aloud and visiting your library will prepare your child for school and life.

Reading aloud to your child for 15 minutes a day feeds the brain with lifetime benefits. And regular visits to the library and choosing books to take home helps develop a love of books and reading. Help spread the message of the importance of early literacy.

In the Estes Valley, we want our kids to meet their highest potential.

However, in recent years, only 39% of Estes Valley children arrived at school sustaining or exceeding benchmarks of school readiness. Yet, with simple activities, that number can be dialed up so that all our kids arrive at school ready to learn. Let’s grow readers.

A child who engages in early literacy

activities at home is a strong candidate for later success in learning to read. Check out our “Estes Grows Readers” link at estesvalleylibrary.org for a great list of resources and information to get started.

A little background: the Month of the Young Child grew out of what was originally a week-long April initiative by the National Association for the Education of Young Children. This effort has been adapted into many special initiatives across our state and county.

As far back as 1971, NAEYC recognized “the early childhood years (birth through age eight) lay the foundation for children’s success in school and later life.”

They add, “It’s a time to plan how we—as citizens of a community, of a state, and of a nation—will better meet the needs of all young children and their families.”

In the coming weeks, we’ll be introducing some new ideas on how you can get involved to help Estes grow readers. We’ll celebrate the local partners who are part of this great effort.

And together, we’ll dream big, as we make it our goal that every young child is Kindergarten-ready upon their arrival for their first day of school.

Together, let’s grow the next generation of readers—and give them the fullest opportunities for success they deserve.

Woman’s Club Meeting April 14 community and church organizations, enjoy golfing, and spend part of their time in Hawaii. They have six children and nine grandchildren that they look forward to spending more time with post-pandemic.

She will speak about Genealogy and Ancestral DNA. Dot Dorman retired as the Chief Executive Officer of the Harmony Foundation in June 2018 and has returned to a long-time interest in family history and genealogy. Born into a large Irish family, she has always been the unofficial family historian. Retirement and the pandemic have provided lots of time for research, reading and improving her knowledge and skills in genealogy. She is a member of the National Genealogical Society, along with the Estes Park Genealogical Society. Dot currently manages 17 different family trees on Ancestry.com and manages the DNA results of seven individuals. Her current projects include research to locate a Revolutionary War soldier in her own family tree and working with DNA results to locate birth family for several adoptees. Have you ever heard someone say they were saving up for a rainy day?

What does this really mean? From what I understand it’s a pretty simple plan of setting aside money into a savings account for a time in the future when you might have an extra-ordinary need that goes beyond what you currently have available. This is all good and true, but what happens if there are too many rainy days and you run out of money? Since the outbreak of COVID we’ve had several individuals and families stop by to see us that have used up their last few pennies in the piggy bank. It’s a horrible feeling to shake the bank until the last coin drops out and the realization sets in that the rainy day fund is empty. A couple more sayings I heard growing up were related to “Pennies from Heaven” and “Showers of Blessings”. I’m not a meteorologist, but I have heard there are certain cloud formations that will give you an indication when a storm is coming. Cumulus clouds are known as “fair weather clouds”, so you generally won’t expect a big rain storm when you spot these in the sky, but instead you will have pretty nice weather. Cumulus clouds are puffy clouds that sometimes look like pieces of floating cotton. A beautiful sight to behold when you’re outside with your head in the clouds.

So, there’s a special cloud formation I wanted to tell you about and it’s one

that many of you might not be aware of.

Remember, I’m not a weather man so you might not find any data to back up my findings. The cloud formation I’d like to introduce you to is the Stimulus clouds. They are similar to Cumulus, but instead of being filled with air they are filled with funding that can produce “showers of blessings” for those in our community that need some funds to replenish their rainy day account. Crossroads has already received some rain drops or rain donations from Stimulus checks and we’re making sure they are being used to help those who need it most. We never give cash directly to those in need, but we do use the money to take care of needs for our neighbors through a thirdparty relationship that provides housing, utilities, hot meals, or other services a neighbor may need help with. Anita Marie Tannuzzo Anita Marie (Reid) Tannuzzo of Tampa, FL passed January 15, 2021. She was born April 3, 1925 in Topeka, Kansas where she graduated high school in 1943.

Taking time off before college, she served in the Civil Air Patrol and worked at Hallmark cards. She met her late husband at Emporia State Teachers College. Following their marriage, they moved to N.Y. eventually settling in Huntington Station.

She taught at Shepherd Day Nursery School, attended by her son J.C. while completing her teaching degree at Hofstra University. Until she retired, she taught at Maplewood Elementary of the South Huntington School District. In the many years Anita and Pat were married, they enjoyed ballroom dancing, tennis playing and traveling the world. After her retirement, they moved their permanent home to Florida, but maintained a small summer home in Estes Park, Colorado.

Anita spent many hours volunteering at Prospect Park Rehab, where Patrick spent his last year. She continued to help feed the patients there, seldom missing a day in her last 15 summers in Colorado. Anita devoted many hours to the Audubon Society, the

YMCA in Tampa where her "Silver Sneakers" friends became the "Platinum Girls," and the P.E.O. sisterhood in both Tampa and Estes Park. Anita also traveled to the National Geographic Expedition to Antarctica, which was their 7th continent checked off of our bucket list.

She took pleasure in being the "oldest" in any crowd, and when asked the secret to her longevity she'd say, "Tennis every morning and a piece of dark chocolate every evening." Anita was predeceased by her son, John Charles, (J.C.); siblings, Charles Robert Reid, Karl A. Reid, and Norma Reid Brown. She will be sorely missed by her daughter, Patricia Anita (Tannuzzo-Johnson) Farnum and her sole surviving cousin, Edna Hansa of Windsor, California. Anita's name will be added to Patrick's headstone at Florida National Cemetery at Bushnell, after which a celebration of life will be planned. Anita would be honored to know you have planted a tree in her name. Charles Edwin Reed March 3, 1930March 30, 2021 When the time comes, all survivors likely wish they’d taken better notes and listened a little more to their loved one before they passed so the obituary could be as full of life as the life that was lived. This certainly is the case with Charles Edwin Reed who passed on Tuesday, March 30, 2021, at the home he shared with his wife, Virginia Baker Reed, on Lookout Mountain, Colorado.

Chuck Reed’s life was full of mountain adventures, wonderful friends, and a loving family. He enjoyed a good joke, a medium-rare grilled steak and the occasional sip of smooth Kentucky bourbon. He was 91.

Chuck was born into the throat of the Great Depression on March 3, 1930, in a tiny farm town named Kersey east of Greeley, Colorado.

While just a toddler, his family traded their farm on Colorado’s plains for vacation cabins in Estes Park and moved there. The Reed Cottages in Estes Park were a fixture for vacationers from all over the world for many years. Chuck helped his parents, Otto and Agnes Reed, and brother, Irv, with that business including cleaning the cabins, cutting firewood and shoveling coal for the cabins’ stoves, and guiding vacationers on fishing and hiking trips in nearby Rocky Mountain National Park. As Chuck grew up in Estes, he became legendary for his athletic ability, work ethic and his prankster tendencies. He was an expert skier, a skill that he honed at the local ski hill in Estes and later taught his sons. He was an accomplished quarterback and track athlete for Estes Park High School and worked at Preston’s Garage in Estes from age 14. With money saved from that job as well as a track

Chuck loved dogs, from his first dog, Spot, to his last one, Toby, a Great Dane-Lab mix that he called his “best dog ever.”

At the end, Chuck was able to share one last small sip of bourbon with his son late one evening then sit up at the breakfast table the next morning, quipping, “I don’t know what’s wrong with me, but it’s not youth.” A week later, he died in his sleep surrounded by many of those who cared for and loved him.

As one might expect, by achieving the ripe age of 91, Chuck outlived almost all of his friends except his best friend, Lee Parker, who still lives on his ranch outside Wheatland, Wyoming. Other survivors include his beloved wife of more than 62 years, Virginia; his sons Chuck, of Golden, Colorado, and Tom of Harrison, Montana; his daughter-in-law Shauna Stephenson of Harrison, Montana, granddaughter Clara and grandson Otto; and “mock daughters” Cherie Waters Braun of Conifer and Nancy Waters Hammans of Loveland. He will be missed and his survivors should have taken better notes, for it was a life of note.

Wildfires Are Devastating….Rain After A Wildfire Can Be Catastrophic Editor’s note: the Estes Park Board of REALTORS® was contacted by FEMA and asked to share this important information with our readers.

The 2020 wildfire season was incredibly devastating to the Colorado landscape, homes, infrastructure, and the economy. Whether your home or business was undamaged, partially damaged, or destroyed by fire, spring rains and snow runoff on a wildfire burn scar can produce flash flooding both downslope and downstream, particularly in areas that are not traditionally prone to flooding causing further catastrophic damages.

Large-scale wildfires dramatically alter the terrain and ground conditions.

Normally, vegetation absorbs rainfall, reducing runoff. However, wildfires leave the ground charred, barren and unable to absorb water, creating conditions ripe for flash flooding and mudflow, a condition that may exist for several years. If you’re concerned about the safety of your family and property with the upcoming spring rains and wildfire season, take action now to protect your home against future wildfire and buy flood insurance to reduce your financial risk should a flood occur.

Flood After Fire - Floods are the most common and costly natural hazard in the nation. While some floods develop over time, flash floods particularly common after wildfires can occur within minutes after the onset of a rainstorm.

Even areas that are not traditionally flood-prone are at risk, due to changes to the landscape caused by fire. In fact, from 2014 to 2018, policyholders outside of high-risk flood areas filed over 40% of all NFIP flood insurance claims. Residents need to protect their homes and property with flood insurance now, before a weather event occurs. Flood risk remains significantly higher until vegetation is restored – up to 5 years after a wildfire.

Protect Your Family – Most standard homeowner policies do not cover flood damage. Flood insurance protects your investment and provides peace of mind.

Remember: it typically takes 30 days for a new flood insurance policy to go into effect, so contact your insurance agent

now. Some communities in the declared areas may not be able to purchase flood insurance through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) but other sources of flood insurance may be available.

Make a “To Go Kit” and have an emergency plan to include evacuation routes.

Conduct a home inventory and take pictures of your possessions; keep important papers in a waterproof place within your emergency kit. Sign up for community emergency alerts in your area to include air quality, flash flooding, and

weather. Gather supplies in case of a catastrophic event and buy flood insurance. See the attached resource list for information about building a “To Go Kit”, flood insurance, and mitigation measures you can take to be prepared for any disaster. Download the free FEMA app for your phone to receive emergency alerts, share real time notifications with loved ones and get emergency safety tips. Early notification saves lives. Sign up for your county’s emergency notification system at Local Emergency Managers | Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (colorado.gov) Protect Your Property – Consider establishing a defensible space perimeter around your home of at least 30 feet but possibly up to 200 feet depending on the terrain. Establish a well-irrigated area around your home, remove dead trees and dense vegetation within 30 feet of the structure. Remaining live trees should be 10 feet apart with tree limbs 10 feet or more from the structure. A few other considerations are using fireresistant materials for roofing, siding, and windows. Prevent sparks from entering your home through vents by covering exterior attic and underfloor vents with wire mesh no larger than 1/8 of an inch. Keep your gutters, eaves, and roof clear of leaves and other debris. Move firewood away from your home, fences, or decks.

Jacelyn Leigh (Leonard) Stephenson Jacelyn Leigh (Leonard) Stephenson was born February 28, 1930 on her parents’ farm in Fairbury, Nebraska.

She pursued her childhood passion to become a registered nurse, graduating from Lincoln General School of Nursing in 1950. She then spent the next four decades in the helping professions, working as a nurse, minister’s wife, and teacher.

Jackie and her husband, Keith, were married on June 15, 1952, and would have celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary this year. They were the parents of three children, David of Laramie, WY; Robert, married to Debbie, of Overland Park, KS; and Shelley, married to Keith Brown, of Tempe, AZ. She was a loving mother and grandmother to four grandchildren, and one great grandchild, supporting each in their individual interests and passions.

Supporting Keith’s educational and clergy career, Jackie nursed, taught, and ministered to others all over the United States, as well as in Indonesia.

Upon graduation from her nursing training, she had been asked to work for two leading doctors in Lincoln as an office nurse, and then proceeded in her career to nurse in various fields of specialty. As head nurse in OB-GYN, she was honored by the student nurses as Lincoln General Hospital’s outstanding nurse. Later, while Keith

took up further education and interim ministries, she served as a minister’s wife with grace and perfection. She continued working fulltime as a nurse in various institutional settings until the family’s transition to life in Indonesia. There, where she and Keith lived for ten years, she was asked to teach English as a Second Language, with prospective students clamoring to get into her classes. Jackie’s transition to teaching had been a natural extension of her devotion to caring for others.

Jackie and Keith retired to Estes Park, Colorado in 1991. In Estes Park, she found joy in her family, St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church, her quilting circle, hiking, cooking, music, and reading. In addition to her husband, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchild, Jackie is survived by her sister Donna, as well as five nieces and nephews, and numerous grandand great-grandnieces and nephews.

She is missed by all of her family members, as well as by friends and former students around the US and abroad.

On April 3, 2021, in the evening, Jackie Stephenson passed away peacefully in her home, surrounded by her immediate family. Gifts in Jackie Stephenson’s name may be directed to St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church or Rocky Ridge Music Center.
