Community Support Needed To Launch EPPD’s First-Ever K9 Program On behalf of the Estes Park Police Department, I am excited to announce we are at the initial stages of implementing a new police K9 program -- the first ever in the history of the Estes Park Police Department. A K9 is a highly specialized dog with intensive police training, which enhances our efforts to keep residents and visitors safe. As we roll out this new program in support of public safety, we're asking for community assistance to fund the program.

Read on to learn more, and we hope you'll join the force behind our K9 initiative.

The staff of the Police Department are faced with new societal pressures every day, so we must stay proactive and remain ahead of the criminal element to protect our community. A K9 is an incredible asset to enhance the capabilities of our patrol officers. K9 enhanced skills can alert officers to potential hazards and this could save an officer's life someday. K9s are multi-tasking units within a police force, consisting of the dog and its handler. Their tasks include locating fleeing criminals, missing persons, illegal and hidden drugs, miscellaneous evidence, weapons and stolen property. The unit may be called to search for people, explosives, drugs, or all three at once. Special event patrols are a valuable K9 duty, since large gath-

erings present heightened safety concerns.

Today's K9s know the difference between work and play. When not working on a specific task, they are approachable, friendly and affectionate.

This flexibility will allow us to offer more opportunities for community engagement and education. Most people can relate to having a dog as a partner, friend and family member - so people of all ages will find K9 demonstrations fun and interesting. These demonstrations can be requested by the public and will help us to foster goodwill and community partnerships.

Estes Park's K9 unit will be crosstrained so they can provide maximum benefit to the community. The K9 handler receives hundreds of hours of initial training before they, along with the trained K9, can be certified and placed in service to perform their daily duties.

Additionally, K9s participate in ongoing education and training on an almost weekly basis to remain current and maintain their certifications. K9 units spend their days on patrol, assisting in calls for service and traffic contacts. A K9 and handler become partners to protect each other in hazardous situations.

Our assigned Officer, Mikel Otazua, will begin his K9 handler training in

April.

Shortly thereafter we expect to recruit the specific K9 to join our program. The costs to develop this program are considerable, although the return on investment to the community includes many long-term benefits for our community's safety. To help the Estes Park Police Department cover the costs, we've established a fundraising campaign that will help us launch the program, estimated to cost roughly $80,000, and continue operations in the future. Tax-deductible donations will help us fund everything from dog food and toys, to veterinary care, to the dog's vest and badge, to K9 unit training, to the custom-built kennel the dog will live in at his handler's home. In addition to accepting general donations, the fully outfitted K9 unit vehicle is available for sponsorship by an individual or organization. The Estes Park Police Department is seeking volunteers for its Police Auxiliary Unit. The mission of the Auxiliary Unit is to enhance the individual and collective safety of the community by assisting the EPPD. The Auxiliary Unit provides increased police visibility and helps to further the goal of a positive police-community relationship for the Town of Estes Park.

Each year this group of volunteers donates nearly 5,000 hours to our community by assisting with special events, conducting regular community patrols to educate and help enforce our wildlife protection ordinance, the Blue Santa program, the Citizen’s Police Academy, and any other needs we identify in the community.

Applicants must be at least 21 years of age, friendly and outgoing, and must enjoy working with people. Applicants should also be able to stand or walk for up to four hours, consent to a criminal and driving background check, have no felony convictions, no more than two moving traffic violations within the past 12 months, and no warrants or misdemeanor convictions in the last five years. A successful interview with the Police Department will also be required.

Auxiliary members come from many diverse backgrounds and life experiences; police or military experience is not required. Members are required to donate a minimum of 96 hours per year and attend a variety of trainings.

Being Aware Of Scam Tactics May Keep You From Being The Next Victim By: Police Officer Maria Jonoska It's something we all fear - having our personal lives invaded by criminals. That fear recently lead one of our local residents down an unfortunate path. I will call him "John," and tell you his story...

Out of the blue, John receives a call from "Apple, Inc.," alerting him that his Apple account has been hacked. Fortunately, the caller explains, Apple can help him stop the hackers from stealing his personal information. Seeing officiallooking information on the caller ID and being offered ID and case numbers by the "Apple employee," John was eager to follow the caller's instructions. John provides the login to his computer and subsequently sees an official-looking warning pop up on the screen that he was being hacked. The caller asks John to stay on the line while he drives to local stores to purchase gifts cards for "Apple iTunes" and "Google Play," explaining Apple will use the cards to pay off and stop the hackers. "Don't worry, John, we will reimburse you for the cost of these gift cards." John ultimately purchases $1,400 in gift cards, provides the gift card numbers for validation, and then receives an official-looking email "documenting" Apple's so-called reimbursement.

Unfortunately, John realized that he had fallen victim to an emerging strategy where scammers spoof an official company or agency, use scare tactics to keep their potential victims on the phone, and then con them into paying money or purchasing gift cards, which are sold by the scammers, below face-value on the black market.

In cases like this, law enforcement officers don't have the benefit of surveillance footage or a stolen credit card that can be traced. We simply don't have enough information to find these scammers, or

trace untraceable gift cards and recover John's money. But John was willing to share his story with you, in hopes that you will think twice if you get a startling or threatening call, like he did, before sharing personal login information and giving them money.

Scams like this are numerous, and may start with someone posing as an employee of Apple, Inc., the IRS, the FBI or even your local utility company. Scammers even pose as police officers. They may frighten you with their knowledge of your location or names of your family members. They may or may not speak English well, and they may present convincing identification.

They may say you owe money on your bills, taxes or have outstanding warrants for your arrest, or that a family member is in jail and urgently needs to post bond. They may insist you stay on the phone while you transfer money or purchase gift cards. We have visited local retailers of gift cards, so they can help warn would-be victims who may be in the midst of this type of scam. We hope you will help us spread the word and most importantly, know the warning signs. If something seems "off," it probably is. Most official companies or agencies would not cold-call and threaten you. If you are in doubt of someone's identity, ask for their contact information so you can verify, confirming with publicly available information on that company.

Finally, reporting attempted scams helps us continue to educate our community. And of course, never hesitate to report if you have been the victim of a scam, so we can do everything possible to assist. Estes Park residents are encouraged to report these incidents to us at the Estes Park Police Department at 970-586-4000.

The charge(s) are merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

On March 7 at 8:11 a.m. police received

a report of a burglary at 600 Big Thompson Ave. Upon investigation police arrested a 28 year old Estes Park male and charged him with burglary, criminal tampering and theft. He was transported to the Larimer County Jail.

Counterfeit Bills Turning Up In Estes Park The Estes Park Police Department has received reports of counterfeit $20 bills remitted to local businesses.

Community Invited To Discuss Proposed Complete Streets Policy Help shape Estes Park’s proposed Complete Streets Policy at an open house March 20 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.

The activity takes place in the Board Room in Town Hall, 170 MacGregor Avenue in Estes Park. All community members, business owners and other stakeholders are encouraged to come and learn about the proposed policy and share their thoughts on its adoption and implementation. An overview presentation will begin at 4:45 p.m., followed by the open house. For more details and the draft policy documents, visit the project website at www.estes.org/transportationstudies.

The primary purpose of the open house is to provide an opportunity for community members to learn more about the proposed Complete Streets Policy developed by the Public Works Engineering Division and citizen Transportation Advisory Board (TAB). Additionally, attendees will be invited to provide feedback on the proposed policy during the open house.

The input provided during this event will be important to the Town Board of Trustees as they consider adoption of the proposed policy.

Complete Streets make it easy and enjoyable to cross the street, walk to shops, and bicycle for work, play, shopping and recreation.

The TAB spearheaded the development of the proposed Complete Streets Policy to establish a long-term vision for the future of our transportation net-

work. A Complete Streets Policy allows planners and designers to understand and consider the mobility needs of every community member however they travel - by foot, bicycle, scooter, skateboard, shuttle or automobile. A Complete Street ultimately encourages all community members to utilize mobility options to access destinations such as schools, places of employment, downtown businesses, neighborhoods and recreation areas. Increased utilization of mobility options can lead to reduced traffic congestion, making it easier for shuttles to run on time and people to safely walk to and from parking areas.

2019 Sponsorships Available For Estes Park Free Shuttles ]The 2019 Estes Transit (free shuttle) Sponsorship program is now open to new sponsors. The Shuttle Sponsorship program was developed to offer interested individuals, nonprofits and/or businesses a way to support the service offered by the Town's Free Shuttles. The shuttles will run June 22 - September 8, 2019 and rides are free to guests, residents and summer workers. Estes Park's Free Shuttles transported approximately 83,000 riders in 2018 to more than 60 stops throughout Estes Park.

There are a variety of sponsorship levels to meet budgets of all sizes, with sponsorships starting at $75 for the entire summer season. Sponsorships are available on a first-come, first-served basis and some opportunities will sell out

quickly. A sponsorship application is available at www.estes.org/shuttles or by emailing Parking & Transit Manager, Vanessa Solesbee at vsolesbee@estes.org.

Applications must be received no later than March 22, 2019.

Contributions will fund operational costs related to services offered by the Town's free shuttles, supporting the continuation of free shuttle rides for guests and residents annually in the Estes Valley.

Town And County Seek Feedback On Proposed Stormwater Management Project Proposed Stormwater Utility fees mailed to Estes Valley property owners The Town of Estes Park and Larimer County mailed letters March 7 to property owners within the Estes Valley Development Code area with proposed property-specific stormwater fees for a proposed Stormwater Utility. Impervious area measurements from aerial imagery were used to create four tiers of proposed monthly residential stormwater fees and separate individual monthly fees for improved non-residential parcels. The fee amounts are proposed to adjust annually based on the CDOT Construction Cost Index and forecasts of future grant and/or voter-approved sales tax revenue. Property owner feedback is requested through the online questionnaire available at www.estes.org/stormwater through March 29, 2019. One response from each property is requested. This critical feedback will assist elected officials in making a decision on the possible formation of a stormwater utility to manage flood risks in the Estes Valley.

Town Public Works Director Greg Muhonen commented, "After our extensive public outreach in 2018, we learned that property owners wanted specific information on the proposed stormwater fees for their properties before supporting or opposing new stormwater fees to reduce community flood risk." Muhonen further explained, "The Town and County have since hired a consultant to digitally measure impervious area on all improved properties. These measurements are used to more precisely calculate proposed

stormwater fees for this proposed utility."

This proposed Stormwater Management Project follows the introduction of the new preliminary floodplain maps provided by the Colorado Hazard Mapping Program (CHAMP). Projects will help reduce future flood damages and reduce the number of properties located within the floodplain boundaries, possibly reducing insurance costs. The proposed flood mitigation projects would be paid for with the proposed fees and other potential funding sources such as sales tax and grant funding.

Town of Estes Park Public Works staff will offer one-on-one consultations during which property owners can meet with staff to address questions and concerns. These office hours are scheduled for March 13, 12:30-2:30 p.m.; March 14, 4-6 p.m.; March 15, 10 a.m.-12 p.m.; March 18, 1-3 p.m.; March 21, 4-6 p.m.; March 22, 11 a.m.-1 p.m.; March 25, 4-6 p.m.; and March 27, 1-3 p.m. These meetings will be held in Room 100 of Town Hall, 170 MacGregor Ave. Appointments are encouraged in order to reduce wait times, and walk-ins are welcomed. Live Fire Demonstration Close Before You Doze Estes Valley Fire District partners with Underwriters Laboratory to promote a new fire safety initiative-Close Before You Doze In case of fire in your home, a closed door can isolate the fire’s flow, reduce room temperature, minimize exposure to the harmful chemicals in smoke, and keep carbon monoxide levels down.

"Close Before You Doze" is a new public safety campaign that encourages everyone to close all the doors in their homes, especially their bedroom door each night before going to bed. Following a study conducted by UL Fire Safety Research Institute (FSRI) showing that in a house fire, a closed door can be an effective barrier against deadly levels of carbon monoxide, smoke, and flames.

However, a new consumer survey conducted by UL FSRI showed that many people keep their doors open at night and don't know that a closed door could potentially save their life in a home fire.

Estes Valley Land Trust & City Of Fort Collins Receive GOCO Grants Last week, the Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) Board awarded two planning grants totaling $141,000 for projects in Larimer County. The City of Fort Collins received a $75,000 grant to update its Park and Recreation Master Plan, and the Town of Estes Park, in partnership with Estes Valley Land Trust, received a $66,000 grant to create a plan to conserve land and wildlife habitat near Rocky Mountain National Park.

The City of Fort Collins’ planning grant will help the city produce an updated, comprehensive master plan to serve as the guiding document for the development of a growing parks and recreation system. The plan aims to provide vision, goals, and clear objectives to ensure the system serves the community’s needs.

The plan will identify existing and needed facilities; build out strategy, design standards, and guidelines; set park design process; consider special interest group requests; assess funding sources; and establish key metrics for implementation.

The Estes Valley Land Trust/Town of Estes Park planning grant will bring together local conservation and recreation groups, local government, federal government, and other interest groups to define conservation and outdoor recreation success for the Estes Valley over the next 20 years.

The vision for the Estes Valley Open Space and Outdoor Recreation Plan is the creation of a unified plan that inspires the community to conserve land and create fulfilling outdoor recreation experiences. Currently, the Estes Valley has no open space or outdoor recreation

plan.

Specific goals of the plan are to develop a set of open space and outdoor recreation priorities that drive decision making on spending conservation- and recreation-related public funding, and to create maps that show high-priority conservation areas as well as outdoor recreation land priorities. This grant will also support the effort to generate broad support by forming a community advisory committee. The Town Board will consider adopting the plan and using it as a guiding document for future decisions. In addition, the plan could be incorporated into a proposed new comprehensive plan.

To date, GOCO has invested more than $54.8 million in projects in Larimer County and has conserved more than 64,000 acres of land there.

GOCO funding has supported Ben Delatour Scout Ranch, Horsetooth Mountain Open Space, Berthoud Swimming Pool, Fossil Creek Trail, Reservoir Ridge Trail, and Lory State Park, among other projects.

Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) invests a portion of Colorado Lottery proceeds to help preserve and enhance the state’s parks, trails, wildlife, rivers, and open spaces. GOCO’s independent board awards competitive grants to local governments and land trusts, and makes investments through Colorado Parks and Wildlife. Created when voters approved a constitutional amendment in 1992, GOCO has since funded more than 5,200 projects in all 64 counties of Colorado without any tax dollar support. League Of Women Voters Of Estes Park Who We Are And What We Do By: Bonnie Seals

The League of Women Voters of Estes Park is celebrating the best membership drive in our history, reaching nearly 90 members, roughly double the nadir we reached five years ago after the Flood of 2013. We are seeing much larger numbers of non-members attending our programs, as we bring timely and informative topics on Fake News, Climate Change and many others to the Estes Valley.

But as we reach more and more people, we are encountering many misconceptions about League. We want to bring you a brief overview of what the League really is all about.

The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan organization which never endorses or otherwise supports candidates for office. Nonpartisan does not mean we do not have policy positions. We do, and we advocate for them vociferously.

After all, the League is celebrating our 100th year of existence, when we began in 1920 advocating for women’s right to vote. Our positions are numerous, but are easily accessed on the “Documents” page of our website lwv-estespark.org.

We are part of a larger, National organization and a member of the Colorado League. All three organizations – National, State and our local League – have positions on many topics.

Our programs, offered at least monthly from September to May and sometimes more frequently, may be of general interest or may advocate for one or more of our positions. We try to make it clear if we are advocating for a position. We also have informative programs which do not take any position on the topic. If we provide a public forum for any candidate for office, we always take a neutral stance and encourage all citizens of the Estes Valley to hear what the candidates have to say and draw your own conclusions.

So, what are these positions and how do we develop them? We develop our positions by studying the issues and annually review all of our local positions, and selected national and state positions, usually at our January program. We adopt positions through consensus of

our members at meetings open to the public, not behind closed doors in dark rooms. If the National or State Leagues are considering adopting or changing a position, they reach out to every local League to hear what our consensus is on that issue. We are truly a grass-roots organization. Examples of the current positions of the League of Women Voters include: • Protecting the rights of all citizens to vote. We oppose voter suppression efforts disguised as efforts to combat mostly imagined “voter fraud” of noncitizens voting or citizens voting more than once. We encourage every eligible citizen to vote!

• We support equal rights and equal opportunity for all, including access to education and housing.

• We support the direct election of the President and Vice-President of the US, and we celebrate the passage of the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact here in Colorado.

• We support fair apportionment of Congressional and State legislative districts and worked to encourage the passage of Amendments Y & Z in last year’s elections.

• Living here next to Rocky Mountain National Park, we promote conservation and effective environmental management.

This is a very select list of our many positions. If you wish to have a voice in the positions of the League, join us at our annual program planning meeting.

DNV-GL Made An Unexpected Visit To Estes Park Health The results of our progress were very good.

Accreditation is a way for a healthcare organization to meet regulatory standards established by The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).

Not only meeting regulations, but also demonstrating the organization’s commitment to high levels of performance and patient care by driving Continuous Quality Improvement. Accreditation programs directly impact the clinical outcomes by improving the structure and process of care which ultimately help in delivering safe, high-quality patient care.

Estes Park Health received accreditation from DNV GL-Healthcare in 2018.

DNV-GL’s innovative program begins with initial accreditation, then following a three year program integrates ISO 9001 compliance to further develop quality standards to the international level. Representatives from DNV-GL made an unannounced appearance on March 5, 2019, to review the progress that has been made since their initial visit, and to offer guidance on moving forward toward the ISO 9001 accreditation.

They arrived with four people and finished in a day and a half. Record time for them. They eliminated 13 of the 14 nonconformities from 2018, and only left us with four recommendations. This is a significant improvement over this past year and it represents a tremendous amount of work well done. I am amazed and so proud of our progress. This is not an easy task and I want you all to know how much I appreciate your support and dedication to safety and the quality of our care and services. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. It’s indeed an honor and a privilege to work with all of you.”

Estes Park Health will now create an action plan to eliminate the single remaining and four new recommendations. DNV-GL will make another unscheduled appearance in 2020 to continue to guide us on our ISO 9001 journey. We will be as prepared for that visit as we were for this one. Nicky’s Steakhouse Restaurant And Lounge Under New Ownership John and Lori Thomason are the new owners of Nicky's Steakhouse Restaurant and Lounge.

Both born and raised in Colorado, they recently made Estes Park their permanent home, as they have both enjoyed a lifetime of family memories in our beautiful town.

After closing their restaurant/steakhouse in OshKosh, Nebraska, they wanted to bring what they were doing in a small restaurant to a bigger audience.

John is an Executive Chef, trained in Denver and Massachusetts. He specializes in seafood, steaks, burgers and prime rib. He will be bringing superior quality steaks and seafood to Estes Park, with the ability to prepare the orders with savory satisfaction in mind.

John and Lori look forward to continuing the historical tradition of Nicky's Steakhouse, and to continue the quality and service that Nicky and his staff have always offered their guests.

Grand Opening Of CABINtique This Saturday f er twenty-six ft After Aft years in Estes Park, Carey Stevanus has taken her love of local history and joined it with her love for decorating. This Saturday she will open the doors of her new store, “CABINtique.” Items in the store will have a vintage cabin and camp feel, including both new and old items. Stevanus began collecting local history memorabilia when she was managing Marys Lake Lodge Employee Housing program twenty-five years ago. She then began digging into the history of the former Estes Park Chalet. She found a postcard with an image of the Chalet before the 1978 fire that destroyed half of the building. Seeing what the historic lodge looked like in its “heyday” started her on a journey she is still on to this day. Today the journey is to share her collection with others who appreciate the history of our town and the people who discovered its beauty long before we all came along.

The mix of new and antique items includes vintage postcards and framed images captured by local photographers like Fred Clatworthy and WT Parke as well as artists Lyman Byxbe, Richardson Rome and many others. Vintage souvenirs and ephemera from years past show the changes our little town has gone through. Peggy Lynch Receives Circle Of Legends Award Peggy Lynch was awarded the Circle of Legends honor by Adam Contos, CEO of RE/MAX International at the RE/MAX convention in Las Vegas.

A team of 15 from Estes Park just returned from a village in Guatemala composed of 1,300 people where more than 50% suffer from malnutrition. The team hopes to adopt this community for five to eight years until it can improve and develop on its own. It is amazing that Food For The Hungry has partnered with over 20 countries since 1976.

duct a Bible School for the children. The medical team met with over 200 families, distributing medications, vitamins and health hygiene kits. There were meeting s and trainings with local nurses, community health promoters and leaders. The group project was a new roof for the school and a new athletic field for the community. The team made over 10 visits to the homes of the sponsor children. The Summit Church now sponsors over 50 children. Over 300 attend school, however this is only 60% that should attend. This was the first year that over 20 children attended middle school for the first time due to the fundraising and scholarships provided by Summit Church and Food for the Hungry.

Colorado Parks And Wildlife Is Addressing Chronic Wasting Disease With Its CWD Response Plan The Colorado Chronic Wasting Disease Response Plan is a long-term plan to reduce the prevalence of CWD in the state.

The 2019 Colorado Big Game Brochure is out and there are plenty of regulation changes and new information for hunters to read up on in advance of the big game draw. One of the big challenges CPW wildlife managers are tackling this year is Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD).

The topic is gaining attention nationwide as 26 states have now reported CWD-infected animals. CWD is a prion disease that affects ungulates such as deer, elk and moose. The disease is always fatal and infected animals can develop symptoms like weight loss, stumbling and listlessness. Although there has been no evidence that CWD has yet been transmitted to humans, the Center for Disease Control, along with CPW, recommend that hunters not eat the meat of a CWD-infected animal.

CPW is addressing the problem headon in Colorado. At its January 20 meeting, the Colorado Parks and Wildlife Commission unanimously approved the Colorado Chronic Wasting Disease Response Plan. It was the culmination of a year-long effort by the CWD Advisory Group to explore the history of CWD, the status of CWD infection in Colorado’s herds, and the best available tactics for lowering CWD prevalence.

The plan provides a suite of tactics that CPW wildlife managers can implement to lower CWD prevalence. The plan’s recommendations are intended to allow for a localized management approach best suited for individual herds that is in coordination with Herd Management Plans. Some of these tactics include changing the buck-to-doe ratio, increasing harvest, and issuing more late-season tags for specific GMUs. For a complete list of tactics, see pages 23-28 of the CWD Response Plan.

There is no overnight fix for CWD. This is a 15-year plan that will use rotating mandatory tests on hunter-harvested bucks to give a complete picture of Colorado’s CWD prevalence every five years. AS CWD Advisory Group member and Director of the Chronic Wasting Disease Alliance Matt Dunfee stated in his presentation to the CPW Commission, “This is a disease you measure in decades, not years. Without action, it will only increase in prevalence and distribution.�

Sophie Greenway 12th Grade Congratulations to Sophie Greenway, the Estes Park News Student of the Week for March 15, 2019.

At EPHS, Sophie is a member of the National Honor Society and earned a 1210 on her SAT and maintains a 3.7 GPA. She is a member of Thespian Troupe 7284 and Major 13 (vocal jazz group) and loves being involved in school musicals and plays, acting, making props and sets. She was a winner of the Denver Center for the Performing Arts Young Playwrights competition for her one act play (she was one of three winners out of 181 submissions!). She is also President and Founder of GSA. Outside of school she loves writing plays and short stories, acting, cooking and baking, singing and playing with her dogs.

Sophie’s favorite quote is “The things that make you strange are the things that make you powerful� by Ben Platt. This quote reminds Sophie to embrace her oddities as strengths, and to not be insecure about who she is.

After high school Sophie plans to go to college and major in theatre and creative writing, with a focus in dramaturgy.

ARE WE ‘PRISONERS OF HOPE’ I visited with a dear veterinarian friend of mine recently. My mind went back to an incident she shared with me years ago when she was in the middle of her internship. She said a woman burst into their clinic frantic to find treatment for a family-loved pet, a hamster. Tina said, “It was evident to all our staff that healing was not likely, in fact, all signs suggested that their pet had died… rigor mortis already setting in.” But, she went on, since the woman was so desperate to have the hamster survive, they did everything they could possibly do…CPR, mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, the whole works…but to no avail, the beloved hamster had passed away. The woman was a ‘prisoner of hope’.

Many of us share her ‘cell’, don’t we? Many are such ‘prisoners’. We want a thing to happen so badly that we disregard the facts and reality of a situation, thinking that if we ‘hope’ enough we can force it into happening…only to be disappointed.

‘Hope’ is wonderful, and essential to all around us. Like you, I give to health organizations each year that are providers of ‘hope’ to children and others struggling with health issues. Our hearts ache for the many who are ‘without hope’ in the world.

However, we also grieve for those who are ‘prisoners of hope’, so let me speak to that.

To do that, we need to realize what hope ‘is’, and what hope ‘isn’t’. ‘True hope’ needs two things: ‘desire’ and ‘expectation’. Our hamster-owner had the first, but reality negated the second. What are other examples of that in our society? Have you ever heard someone (yourself) say, “When I win the lottery I’m going to…!” or, in years past, “When my ship comes in…!”? These are attitudes of millions who are ‘prisoners of hope’. Definitely, there are times when good things happen. Consider an unemployed New Jersey man, Michael Wiersky, who just this week pocketed $162.5 million from his lottery win. But, really, how many lotto-ticket-purchasers truly ‘expect’ to receive a payout? Often such ‘prisoners of hope’ waste monies needed elsewhere to buy tickets.

This problem is even more sad when people believe that they can do things against our society ‘hoping’ to get off unscathed. Most people who disregard society’s laws believe that they can ‘sow wild oats’ and avoid consequences. People ask, “How did Watts or Frazee think they could murder spouses and ‘get away with it’?” But it applies in lesser crimes also, doesn’t it? Driving under the influence, or while texting, or ???

The ‘prisoner of hope’ designation is obvious when it comes to social issues as well, isn’t it? All of us ‘desire’ a day when there is no violence on our nation’s streets. However, I sense that some people believe that one day all the ‘bad guys’ will turn in their guns and all ‘good guys’ guns will be regulated properly. All of us ‘desire’ to see total racial equality and harmony. I sense that some believe that if they ‘protest’ enough, even ‘practice civil disobedience’, they can bring these about.

‘Prisoners of hope’?

There are things locally that we can become ‘prisoners of hope’ about, aren’t there? We learned this week that we can expect 4.8 million visitors to RMNP / Estes Park. Are we realistic and accepting and willing to do our best to handle that, or, as ‘prisoners of hope’, not liking crowds, will we protest against things like housing efforts and road and other projects to help us handle what will inevitably come and, thus, end up being disappointed ‘prisoners of hope’. Let’s focus on what we ‘desire’, but also on what we can reasonably ‘expect’ and act responsibly to do all we can to make those work.

Efficiency Works To Hand Out Free LEDs

Residents, businesses invited to learn about energy saving programs Residential and business customers of Estes Park Light and Power can learn about ways to save money on their electric bills, how to get rebates on appliances or energy efficiency upgrades, and pick up a two-pack of LED bulbs for free during regular visits by representatives of the Efficiency Works program this spring and summer.

The Efficiency Works program will host a table in the atrium of Estes Park Town Hall, 170 MacGregor Ave., on the first and third Wednesday of every month, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. through the month of June. Light & Power cus-

tomers are invited to stop by for a pair of free LED bulbs, sign up to receive free information and ask questions about energy-saving programs, or simply get ideas about how they may save money while improving the comfort in their homes or workplaces.

“Anyone planning upgrades to their homes or business really needs to get to know about Efficiency Works programs,” said Reuben Bergsten, director of utilities for Estes Park. “Efficiency Works can provide expert assessments for a home or business, rebates to buy down the up-front costs for energy improvements, and expert advice and help both up-front and throughout the process.”

Since 2015, Efficiency Works has helped more than 9,000 customers save nearly 100,000 megawatt- hours of electricity use, enough to power 11,500 homes. Customers are encouraged to visit the Efficiency Works website or call 877-981-1888 for more information.

Local Vocals Concert Postponed Peak to Peak concerts was planning to present its sixth annual Local Vocals concert next Saturday, March 16th, at 3:00 p.m., but now the committee has found it necessary to re-schedule it for Saturday, April 6th, at 2:00 p.m., still at Shepherd of the Mountains Lutheran Church (SMLC), 2000 Ptarmigan Trail.

A big thank-you goes to Robert Gunn, the Local Vocals coordinator, for scrambling to make this happen in spite of the short notice that the piano accompanist who has been rehearsing with all of these local singers for this concert, Margie Patterson, has suddenly been called out of town due to the death of a very good friend in MA. Accompanists are a rare and indispensable breed in Estes Park, and Margie has been generous with her time. Fortunately, however, Michelle Gergen-Wis-

ner is willing and available to take Margie’s place once Michelle has finished her run with the Fine Arts Guild of the Rockies’ production of the musical, The Spitfire Grill, March 8-10 and 15-17.

The Peak to Peak committee apologizes for any inconvenience to its many loyal patrons and reminds them that it will still be ready to present the Instrumental Ensembles Concert, with musicians drawn from the first-chair Oratorio of Estes Park Society Orchestra, right on schedule Saturday, April 13th at SMLC at 3:00 p.m.

Of course, the Public is invited to enjoy both of these concerts, free of charge, as always, but donations are gratefully encouraged, and a reception will follow each of them.

Patriots For Peace March Meeting The Estes Park Patriots for Peace invite you to join us for our next meeting, to be held Wednesday, March 20 at 5:30 p.m. in the Wasson Room of the Estes Valley Public Library. Our mission is to “build a culture of peace at all levels of society,” and to that end, we support the principles and practices of the Estes Valley Restorative Justice Program. Our program will feature a speaker from that group, Mary Barron, the Restorative Practices Coordinator for the RJ program in the schools. Ms. Barron brings a background of some 22 years in special education and administration to this position. She says the RJ program in the schools creates an “opportunity to strengthen our learning community because it focuses so much on relationship building… [allowing] students to take responsibility for their actions.”

We are very pleased to continue our support of this program in our community and our schools, and we hope you will be able to attend our meeting to learn how students are being impacted by this program, both individually and

as a learning community. Light refreshments will be served and we will discuss upcoming events such as our soon-tobe-awarded high school scholarship (April) and Peace Jam (May). As a final note, the Dances of Universal Peace will not be held (this month only) in lieu of a nearby special event, a Dance retreat on Friday or Zikr on Saturday evening

(7:15 both evenings) at the Nalanda Campus of the Naropa Institute in Boulder, led by Pir Shabda Kahn, an internationally recognized teacher/leader.

The last melodrama to be staged by Back Pew Creations will debut this Friday and Saturday (March 15 & 16 at 7:00 p.m.) at Presbyterian Community Church of the Rockies. "The Great Estes Park Growth Spurt or What Do We Want to Be When We Grow Up? � will take another fractured look at Estes Park history and how the town almost became the Las Vegas of the Rockies.

Written by Rich Mitchell, who also directs and plays a character in the melodrama, the plot involves a gambler with a penchant for cheating, a fortune teller, gullible town's people, a rambling county commissioner, some clueless hotel people, and countless puns and playson-words that will keep the audience laughing, or groaning, or both. "The villains want the town to head in a whole different direction from this family tourist destination that the town leaders want," explains Mitchell.

Tickets are $10 for adults in advance, or $12 at the door. Children 12 and under get in for $5.00. They can be purchased at Macdonald Book Shop downtown or at the church office, 1700 Brodie Ave. Monday through Thursday. The church office is closed on Friday. The play is staged five times: Friday and Saturday, March 15, 16, 22, and 23rd at 7:00 p.m. with a Sunday, March 24th, matinee at 3:00 p.m.

The melodrama has been well attended in recent years with some performances a sellout. "We're doing well," says Back Pew co-chair Ginger Wilkinson.

ing three nights a week for two and a half months rehearsing their lines, their entrances and exits, and putting together an evening anyone can enjoy. The audience is encouraged to boo and hiss the villains and cheer on the heroes -- a standard at melodramas.

One member of the cast who has been a standard and steady performer each year is high school senior Bailey Burke.

"This is my eighth melodrama," says Burke. "I just enjoy doing it and I enjoy spending time with the people that do it." She started when she was nine years old. Now 17, she portrays an aide to the owner of a local hotel. Asked to describe her character, Rebecca, Bailey says, "I'd say she's kind of -- in essence -- dimwitted, almost. She tries really hard to be in charge and do a good job, but she's not the smartest character."

Rebecca frequently gets her words mixed up, opening the door, of course, for an avalanche of puns and word plays. Bailey still manages to balance

school with rehearsals. "I can do my homework during practice when I'm not on stage."

Despite eight years of melodramas, Bailey is leaving acting behind. "I've decided I don't want to do any theater or arts related majors in college." She's been accepted at Colorado State University where she plans to major in animal science. But her advice to others thinking about acting: "I'd just say try it out and you'll probably be good at it. There are very few people I've met who haven't been able to do a good job."

"She is a dream to work with," says Wilkinson. "We all know this is her last year and that makes it pretty special, too."

Wilkinson says Susie Manhoff, who plays Betty Cooker, a would-be cafe owner in town, is obviously having a ball doing the play. "She told me, 'Ginger, you know I'm 85.' And I said, 'Does that

make a difference?' And she said, 'Well, I guess I've learned that's no excuse in Estes Park.'"

Evelyn Wilson plays hotel owner Leona Hutt who manages to rip off six puns in just two sentences.

Sherry Unruh, Rik Forschmiedt, Kay Mitchell, Denise Moore, Michael Moore, Nancy Thomas, Ron Ball, Steve Wilson, Jim Gamet, and Kathye Osborne also fill roles on stage as Verlene Thorpe once again provides a piano music backdrop to all the action.

The success of the melodrama over the last ten years or more has been remarkable. "We do have a following and I find that amazing," says Wilkinson. "I think a lot of it is the play usually involves the town and the park, humor, and it helps us laugh at ourselves. There have been a lot of people who have been here at the right time. That's the miracle of the whole thing to me. We've had people like Rich Mitchell, like Verlene Thorp, and the kids -- like Bailey Burke."

All of the proceeds from the play will be divided among Lifelong Learning of Estes Valley, Crossroads Ministry, and Estes Park Crisis Advocates.

As usual, popcorn and sarsaparilla will be available for sale at the intermission.

And you can still throw popcorn at the villains. The melodrama may be going away, but some traditions never die.

This musical is full of small town charm, and catchy, Appalachian style music. Director Denise Stookesberry says the talented cast will have you humming the tunes and feeling good about the story of redemption.

To The Editor: Theater is alive and well here in Estes Park as evidenced in the latest Fine Arts Guild production- The Spitfire Grill.

Having settled myself into the cozy confines of Hempel Auditorium- I anxiously awaited the opening scenes of this local musical production. Familiar with several of the actors’ faces and anticipating the fresh, new lead actress, I was immediately transported to Gilead, Wisconsin while gazing at the ingenious backdrop of the Café itself. No cost was spared with attention to detail and meticulous thought was most definitely utilized in the creation of this backwoods café.

Each of the actors and actresses were exemplary in their specific character roles as raucous laughter resounded throughout the course of this play. Even the sen-

sitivities of certain poignant songs were felt by each of the audience members.

Percy, played by Emmy was a unique personal favorite as she belted out, “Into the Frying Pan” with much gusto, fervor and vibrato.

The songs, the scenes, the acting reminded me so of all of us here in Estes Park…..a small down home flavor of seasons, situations, and solidifying personal relationships. Thank you Denise Stookesberry and crew for rejuvenating the wintry doldrums here in Estes with your delightful rendition of The Spitfire Grill. Make a date to experience this nugget of pleasure if you have not done so already. I highly recommend it!

Duck Race Seeks Volunteers To Help On Race Day The Estes Park Duck Race needs volunteers to carry a big stick, push little ducks around, and keep people out of Fall River.

“We need about 30 to 40 people to help corral the ducks as they float down Fall River, as well as making sure people don’t fall into the river,” said Gene Oja, the official “sheriff ” of the duck race.

Oja said volunteers should contact him at info@eeojadds.com as soon as possible.

On race day, Saturday, May 4th, volunteers should check in at the Big Horn Restaurant at 401 W. Elkhorn in the rear Deli Room at 12:00-12:30 p.m. where

they will sign in, get a security hat and vest, a long pole to push ducks back into the running water, and instructions on what part of Fall River they are assigned to work.

Corralling more than 5,000 ducks floating down Fall River from Nicky’s Resort to the Wheel Bar in Riverside Plaza in downtown Estes Park is a large undertaking that requires volunteer manpower.

Be Ready For Kindergarten School starts August 21, 2019! Do you have a child that will be going to kindergarten? EVICS has been passing out Be Ready backpacks to local preschools for

all children heading to kindergarten.

These Be Ready backpacks include information about school readiness, as well as some essentials for kindergarten.

Be Ready is a program available through EVICS that believes that all children in Larimer County should be prepared to enter school. Be Ready provides a “Ready Set Kindergarten” guide for each four-year old entering school that provides fun activities for making friends

and getting along in the classroom, tips to get ready for reading, writing, and math, as well as a month by month guide to keep your family on track with kindergarten registration, vaccinations, and more! EVICS Mini-Grants Provide Resources To Programs Fun things are happening in our community preschools and childcare programs! Last year, EVICS had the great pleasure of awarding three mini-grants to local childcare programs for quality improvement projects. All licensed programs were eligible to apply, and awards were made for each application received.

Lifelong Learning of Estes Valley Preschool received $250 to bring the Denver Zoo to the classroom. Children got to meet small critters face to face and learned about animal characteristics and habitats. Mountain Top Childcare and Preschool received $500 to purchase age-appropriate math manipulatives, educational signage and posters, a Bluetooth speaker to assist with indoor large motor activities, balls for outdoor play, and storage bins for better organization.

Community 4 Kids (C4K) After-School program received $250 to bring gymnastics instructors to young students after school, teaching motor skills and keeping kids moving and healthy.

The mini-grants were offered as a pilot program in 2018, and EVICS plans to offer the program again this spring.

High quality, nurturing early learning environments make a difference for young children and their families. Time For Some Financial Spring Cleaning Spring is here – and for many of us, that means it’s time for some spring cleaning. This year, in addition to tidying up your home, why not try brightening your financial environment? Some of the same moves you make to clean your surroundings may apply to your finances. Consider these suggestions: • Get rid of clutter. When you go through your closets, attic, basement or other areas, you may find many items you no longer need. You might be able to sell some of these things or find other ways of disposing of them. And as you review your portfolio, you might also encounter “clutter” in the form of investments that may be redundant to others you own. If so, you might consider selling these investments and using the proceeds to purchase new ones, which may help you broaden your portfolio.

• Protect yourself from hazards. As you go about your spring cleaning, you may well encounter hazardous substances, such as cleaning agents, paints, batteries, pesticides and so on, which you don’t need anymore and which may pose potential health risks. You can reduce the possible danger from these materials by recycling or disposing of them in an environmentally safe way. Your overall financial situation has hazards, too, in the form of illness or injury preventing you from working, or, in your later years, the need for some type of long-term care, such as an extended stay in a nursing home. To protect yourself, you may need appropriate insurance, including disability and long-term care.

• Find new uses for existing possessions. When you are sprucing up your home, you may rediscover uses for things you already have. Who knows –

perhaps that treadmill that’s been gathering dust in your garage could actually be employed again as part of your rededicated exercise regimen. And you might be able to get more mileage out of some of your existing investments, too.

Suppose, for instance, that some of your stocks are paying you dividends, which you take as cash. If you don’t really need this income to support your lifestyle, you might consider reinvesting the dividends so that you can own more shares of the dividend-paying stocks. Over the long run, increased share ownership is a key to helping build your portfolio.

• Establish new habits. Spring cleaning doesn’t have to be just about physical activities – it can also involve a new set of habits on your part. For example, instead of placing your unread magazines in an ever-expanding pile, try to read and recycle them quickly. You can also develop some positive habits as an investor, such as “paying yourself first” by regularly putting some money in an investment account each month, even before paying all your bills. You can also avoid some bad habits, such as overreacting to market downturns by selling investments to “cut your losses,” even though those same investments may still have strong growth potential and may still be suitable for your needs.

Doing some spring cleaning can make you feel better about your living space today. And applying some of these techniques to your financial situation can help you gain a more positive outlook for tomorrow.

Village Thrift Shop Now Accepting Grant Applications The Village Thrift Shop is a non-profit organization that began in May of 2016.

All Board members and staff are volunteers. The By-laws of the organization state that after paying the direct costs of running the thrift shop, any profits will be used to fund grants to 501(c) (3) organizations that serve the Estes Valley.

Staff is excited to announce that they will accept grant applications beginning February 1, 2019, through 4:00 p.m. on March 30, 2019. Any 501(c) (3) organization that serves the Estes Valley is eligible to apply for monies that will assist with project/programs or purchasing items that will enhance the Estes Valley community.

In 2018 the Village Thrift Shop awarded 49 grants for a total amount in excess of $92,000 and expect the total amount available for grants in 2019 to be significantly more.

A note of caution, however, if your organization was a recipient of a Village Thrift Shop grant in 2018 and you have not submitted your “Grant Follow-Up

Form,” you will not be eligible for a grant in 2019.

Items that will not be funded include organizational start-up expenses, wages or stipends, something that benefits only one individual, monies to retire an existing debt, mileage reimbursement, regular monthly business expenses, large capital projects (except for a very identifiable portion of that project,) any nationally recognized service organizations, or anything that would be an attempt to influence legislation or a political campaign.

A Grant Committee will review and evaluate all applications and make awards accordingly. Grant awards will be announced by the end of April.

US Trail Running Conference Announces Theme - Diversity And Inclusion, Trail Running For Everyone Enabling long term success for a growing trail running community Active at Altitude, organizers of the 2019 US Trail Running Conference has announced the theme for this year’s edition of the annual event, Diversity and Inclusion: Trail Running for Everyone.

This theme is an organic develop-ment sprouting from last year’s theme of Creating Opportunities, and builds on the pro-ductive content of the 2018 Conference.

The first is focused on trail race directors, and is held Wednesday, October 9, to Friday October 11, while the sec-ond segment focuses on trail runners, and takes place on Saturday, October 12.

For trail race directors, the theme of diversity and inclusion is enabled by a combination or expert presentations and speaker panels that will cover how to increase attendance from groups that are currently under represented in trail running races. This will include women, various racial and socio-economic groups, youth, LGBTQ and intersex runners, as well as blind and adaptive runners. Further sessions will cover traditional race infor-mation such as logistics and amenities, sponsor partnerships, social media, marketing and promotion, trail accessibility and permits, budget and finance, and sustainability ini-tiatives. The Conference will provide a takeaway document for each registered trail race director offering a list of actionable items that will deliver proven results to grow trail race participation.

Passover Celebrated This Year In Estes Park This year Estes Park will experience its first community Passover seder. This year on the first night, Estes Park Jews and others who love them will come together to retell the story of the Exodus from Egyptian slavery during this festive meal replete with foods that symbolize the elements of the story of their ancestors escaping Egyptian Slavery. The seder begins the Passover holiday, which lasts for eight days. During that week, Jews refrain from eating any foods with leavening. That means no bread unless it is flat, unleavened bread called matzah and no cakes or cookies or pasta or anything made with flour other than matzah. The bible recounts how the Israelites, rushing out of Egypt, had no time to let their bread rise.

Our Estes Park Seder will happen on Friday, April 19 and begin at 6:00 p.m.

The seder on April 19 will be guided by Rabbi Shimon Moch from Fort Collins.

Rabbi Moch commented that no matter how many times one has retold this story during one’s lifetime, Jewish tradition bids us to continue to retell it. Not only were our ancestors redeemed from

slavery in Egypt but we must consider that we ourselves have been redeemed from slavery. At the same time, we must also recognize that we are still enslaved in many ways and that we often remain asleep to what enslaves us today. Many today cannot free themselves from what commercial and political media tell them to believe about how they must look, feel and behave. Many cannot free themselves from the slaveries of addictions of every sort: drugs, sex, gambling, shopping, shop lifting, eating, not eating, work and more. On Passover we remember the miracles that delivered us from slavery so long ago and we recognize our own enslavement today and begin to take action to redeem ourselves.

Passover asks us to understand that more people suffer physical slavery today than ever before in human history.

Slaves today include those abducted as sex slaves, migrant laborers manipulated to work for next to nothing and obligated to live in dilapidated accommodations, children kidnapped as child soldiers or chained to work textile looms.

Those slaveries must end now and God sends us to face today's pharaohs as surely as God once sent a reluctant Moses.

Ancient Wisdom And The Crisis On The Border There are few issues facing our government today that are more divisive than the border crisis. Our American character creates a dilemma. On the one hand we are a generous and compassionate people. On the other hand, we are law abiding and see the need to protect ourselves against those who seek to do us harm. Political rhetoric by politicians stirs emotions but offers little in the way of a solution to our dilemma.

The scope of the crisis can be daunting.

Exact numbers are hard to come by but it is estimated that there are about 12 million people in the country illegally.

Approximately 300 thousand try to cross the border illegally every year. Of these 40 thousand are unaccompanied children. Right now, there are about 11 thousand children in shelters awaiting to be reunited with family. The issue our government faces is how do we enforce immigration law, protect our borders,

and extend compassion to those seeking to live in the United States, both young and old?

Of course, we are not the first country in history to face this dilemma. Perhaps we can learn from the experience of others. Ancient wisdom tells us that we are to be subject to governing authorities. We also learn that the nations have been given periods of time and boundaries. In addition, the ancients tell us that we will all, individuals and governments, give an account to how we have cared for the most vulnerable among us, the widows and orphans.

On Thursday evening, March 21 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Mountain View Bible Fellowship will host a discussion about the Bible and the border. We will seek the ancient wisdom of the Bible and discuss how it can be applied to resolve our dilemma.

Chautauqua: Local Students Combine Research And Performance

POVERTY SIMULATION

PRESENTED BY UNITED WAY What:

Participants assume the role of a low-income family member living on a limited budget and interact with volunteers playing the roles of bill collectors, school administrators, service providers, and more. A simulation creates a community of people living in poverty for one “month” comprised of four 15-minute weeks. During this hour, each family unit must connect with community resources (i.e. schools, utility companies, social service workers, etc.) to meet their basic needs on a limited income.

Why:

Poverty Simulations are a powerful, experiential opportunity to learn about and engage in poverty reduction. By participating in a simulation, community members increase their understanding of the dynamics of poverty and experience, on a small scale, the struggle for self-sufficiency many people face in Larimer County.

from history. They’ve read and memorized all they can. They’ve thought deeply about how to outline their story and write a monologue. They’ve assembled their costume. They’ve practiced before their friends.

And now they’re ready for you: the audience.

You can support these local students—and delve into history— by attending this season’s Young Chautauqua performances at the Library. With so many participants, there will be four evenings of Chautauqua, with a different roster of performers each evening. There’s no registration to attend.

It opens this weekend: Friday and Saturday, March 15 and 16, in the Library’s Fireplace Corner.

Then mark your calendars for the other performance nights on March 22 and April 5.

Those who have attended in years past know they’re in for an evening of enjoyment. It’s truly fascinating to watch how these students have worked to develop their narrative—and how they are able to field questions, both in and out of character.

This year’s youngest performers are seven years old, one portraying Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg and another portraying Ruth Wakefield, inventor of the chocolate chip cookie. There are many

artists: Georgia O’Keefe, Walt Disney, Ella Fitzgerald, and Vincent Van Gogh.

There are scientists: Jane Goodall, Marie Curie, and Carl Sagan. One young lady is portraying The Statue of Liberty, while her sister plays Annie Moore, the first person to pass through Ellis Island.

Two different students are portraying Revolutionary figure Eliza Hamilton—at different ages in her life—and they’ll appear back-to-back on April 5.

Colorado is recognized around the U. S. for its topnotch Young Chautauqua program. And Estes Park certainly has one of the most thriving programs in the state, led again this year by instructor Katherine Dumont, who has been mentoring each student at weekly meetings held at the library—the perfect place to research all these intriguing figures of history.

The students also got to work regularly with professional storyteller and coach Susan Marie Frontczak, thanks to a partnership with Colorado Humanities.

The program raises student interest and knowledge of history by providing opportunities to learn research skills and to practice public speaking

while being mentored at each step. It builds self-esteem and reveals insights into life choices and challenges—for both performers and audience members alike.

Gratitude goes to the Library Friends & Foundation for making Young Chautauqua possible, and specifically to funds from the Katie Speer Memorial Grant.

The project is one more element in the library’s objectives toward literacy, lifelong learning, and community. Come support these performers.

Our Wonderful World: Library Scheduling Summer Programs Programs are now being scheduled for this summer’s popular armchair traveladventure series, “Our Wonderful World,” hosted by the Estes Valley Library. Scouting Food Drive To Benefit Crossroads Ministry Food Bank

On Saturday, March 16 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Estes Park Boy Scout Units will conduct a “Scouting for Food” collection at Safeway to benefit the Estes Park Crossroads Ministry food bank.

Steve Lambert, Scouting’s volunteer Commissioner for Estes Park commented, “This is the 7th year of the annual Scouting for Food community service partnership between Estes Scouts and Crossroads Ministry. Boys and girls in BSA units donate time and Scouting’s name to collect food and increase awareness of local food bank needs. It also strengthens individual Scout’s understanding of Scouting’s dedication to the high ideals of service expressed in the Scout Oath: ‘On my honor, I will do my best… to help other people at all times…’, the Scout Law, ‘A Scout is helpful’, and the Scout Slogan, ‘Do a Good Turn Daily.’”

We will use a book, composed of many short essays by the Jesuit priest and paleontologist, Perrier Teilhard de Chardin. The title of the book is Christianity and Evolution. Virginia Ann Lundberg, age 95, passed away peacefully in her La Jolla home on March 8, 2019.

She was born on April 19, 1923 in Cleveland, OH to parents Agnes and Charles J. Nock.

She graduated from Marygrove College in 1945.

On October 16, 1948 she married her beloved husband, Edward who preceded her in death in 2003. They lived in Berea, OH to raise a family of 10 children.

She was a devoted wife, mother, and homemaker. Together they spent many years in Estes Park, CO before and after their retirement where they enjoyed the Rocky Mountains with their family.
