The Town's Parking & Transit Division is excited to announce that the 2021 Estes Transit (Free Shuttle) Sponsorship Program is now open to new sponsors.

The sponsorship program offers interested individuals, nonprofits and/or businesses a way to market their business or organizational offerings in a highly visible manner, while also supporting the Town's seasonal shuttle service.

There are a variety of sponsorship levels to meet budgets of all sizes, with some sponsorships starting at $350.00 for the entire summer season. Sponsorships are available on a first-come, firstserved basis and some opportunities will sell out quickly.

Interested sponsors can access the 2021 sponsorship application online by visiting www.estes.org/shuttles, or to request a copy via email, please contact Vanessa Solesbee, Parking & Transit Manager at vsolesbee@estes.org. Applications must be received no later than March 19, 2021.

Sponsorship investments will fund operational costs related to services offered by the Town's free shuttles, supporting the continuation of free shuttle rides for guests and residents annually in the Estes Valley.

The 2021 Estes Transit summer service will be officially announced in midMarch after presentation to the Town's Transportation Advisory Board and Shuttle Committee. Staff anticipate a service schedule similar to 2020 with some minor adjustments to routing. It is anticipated that Estes Transit will serve the following areas of Town in 2021: Red Route / Elkhorn Express: Continuous loop serving stops along Elkhorn Avenue;

Gold Route: Serving The Stanley Hotel campus and Fall River Road corridor up to Rocky Mountain Gateway; Blue Route: Serving Big Thompson Avenue, Dry Gulch Road and Lower

Stanley Village; Brown Route: Serving portions of downtown, including East Riverside Drive, Mary's Lake Road and a portion of Spur 66 near Elk Meadow Lodge and RV Park; Silver Route: A loop serving the Highway 7 corridor, a portion of Fish Creek Road near the Estes Valley School District campus and Lake Estes; and the Green Route: Weekend-only "express" service connecting the Town's largest

parking areas (Parking Structure and Events Complex) with downtown during peak times of day.

Town staff, and its professional transit operator, Rocky Mountain Transit Management, are committed to welcoming residents and visitors back to public transit with continued investment in measures to protect the health and safety of our riders and drivers. More information on 2021 public health measures and requirements (provided by both the Centers for Disease Control and Colorado Department of Public Health and the Environment) will be shared when the 2021 season is announced next month.

Volunteer Opportunities At The Stanley Home Museum & Education Center The Stanley Home Museum & Education Center’s goal is to inspire and educate guests by telling stories about F.O. and Flora Stanley’s leadership and contributions to the early development of Estes Park while experiencing the beautiful 116 year-old Stanley home.

The Historical Stanley Home Museum and Education Center is excited to be opening for public tours on May 1, 2021. We are recruiting volunteers to be part of our spirited team. Some of our volunteer opportunities include: Guides - We are looking for enthusiastic story-tellers to interact with our guests as they think about how the Stanley’s stories apply to their own lives and hometowns. Let us know if you would like to be an interactive storyteller.

Grounds Maintenance - Help us create and maintain the beautiful museum grounds, as we plant colorful

flowers. This will be a place where guests can enjoy the beautiful mountain setting.

Housekeeping - Grab your feather duster and help us keep the home in pristine condition for visitors. With care, dust Flora Stanley’s writing desk and many more historical pieces throughout the home.

Van Drivers - Tours will start at the Estes Park Visitors’ Center. We are looking for Stanley Home Van drivers to transport guests to and from the museum. A Commercial Drivers License (CDL) is required. If you do not currently have a CDL, the Historic Stanley Home Foundation will pay the fees for you to obtain one.

Two Men Injured In Fire At Elkins Distilling Co. Last Saturday Estes Valley Fire Protection District (EVFPD) responded to a call last Saturday morning of a possible explosion and fire at the Elkins Distillery.

Elkins Distillery is located near Lake Estes, opened in July 2016 and produces whisky with Colorado-grown grain, according to its website. There's also a tasting room at their location.

Crews arrived on the scene at 9 a.m. and two employees of the distillery were taken to Estes Park Hospital. Authorities said the condition of the employees was unknown at the time of the accident.

The fire was extinguished quickly but it did a substantial amount of damage to the rear of the building. At the time of printing, the cause of the fire was still unknown.

Fire crews cleared from the scene on Saturday afternoon, and the investigation was turned over to the fire marshal.

A Go Fund Me account was set up for the two employees who were injured with a goal of collecting $20,000. As of Wednesday, March 3, $33,540 had been collected.

Post Pandemic Estes Park: We Must Be Ready Early evening on Tuesday, February 23rd, the call came. A well-practiced female voice, identified herself as being with Salud Family Clinic in Estes Park.

She sought some confirming information from Roger and me. Then, satisfied with our answers, she requested we select a time from several options, to come be vaccinated the following Thursday.

Moments after ending the call with the woman from Salud, I called my daughter in Maryland. She explained that after getting the second shot in late March and allowing for an appropriate wait time, Roger and I would, by the end of April have immunity.

My daughter, having already been vaccinated (due to her position at work) then said, “Mom with us all vaccinated, how about I come to Estes to celebrate your birthday in May?" Having been almost a year since we

I couldn’t help but notice that conversations occurring among the other people at Salud to be vaccinated—across appropriate social distances— tended to revolve around a generalized anticipation of freedom from uncertainty and fear that immunity to COVID-19 might possibly afford. In some conversations, people mentioned getting together with family and friends. In others, the talk was about going out to restaurants, attending church, travelling. Once again having tourists come to Estes Park and local businesses thriving. I thought about the way that the hopes and aspirations being expressed here at Salud, mirrored the conversations townspeople have been having with me and me with Roger.

were last together, I tearfully said yes.

Then joyfully gave myself permission to think about how wonderful it will be to give her a great big hug.

When the call was over, Roger and I, much to our surprise, became uncharacteristically animated. Giddily we talked about favorite activities-- beyond family, birthdays and hugs--that we’d put off doing due to the pandemic, but hopefully would soon do again. In our minds, the doors of possibilities had been flung open. Our thoughts turned to travelling, adventure, public gatherings, meals with friends, watching movies at the theatre, on and on.

On Thursday, Roger and I dutifully wearing masks, excitedly arrived at Salud a few minutes early for our appointments. After completing the per-

On the way home, riding in the car with Roger I reflected on the conversations I’d heard. I began thinking about what a post-pandemic Estes Park might be like. Of days full of hope, opportunity and possibility. In which people would be productive and joyfully engaged. I continue to think this way and encourage you to do the same. The time for turning such thoughts to action is rapidly approaching. When it arrives, I plan to be ready. Do you?

1917 Book Club To Take Place March 17, 2021 On Wednesday, March 17, 2021 from 10:00 - 11:30 a.m., the 1917 Book Club virtually hosted by the Estes Park Museum will explore local title, Legendary Locals of Estes Park by Steve Mitchell. The book explores the life and events of notable Estes Park residents. This program is free and open to the public and will take place over Zoom. Book Club attendees will have access to their camera and microphones during the program to better participate in the discussion. It is strongly encouraged that participants read each book prior to the program to take part in the discussion. No registration is required. Nonprofits Partner On Virtual Fundraiser

Estes Chamber Foundation, Youth in Action partner on Coolest Dog Contest The Estes Chamber Foundation and the Estes Park High School chapter of Youth in Action both planned to create pet related winter fundraisers, so they decided to join forces. The Estes Park Coolest Dog Contest is a joint effort of the Estes Chamber Foundation and Youth in Action to raise $25,000 for program funding in 2021. Ten percent of the proceeds of the fundraiser will be donated to The Pet Association of Estes Park in honor of its founder, Carolyn Fairbanks, who passed away on Valentine’s Day 2021.

Since 1990, Carolyn Fairbanks has been president of the Pet Association, which is our local humane society assisting nearly 100 animals a year. Donations will contribute to the adoption program to pay for boarding, medical and other necessary care animals need while securing their forever home.

How the Contest works The Coolest Dog Contest is an online

When I get up in the morning, the first thing I do is put on some fuzzy footies and then step into my slippers. As a way of practicing balance, I try to do these two simple steps without leaning against anything. Some mornings I can draw my knee to my chest and balance on one leg to put on my footie. Other mornings I try to get my knee up high enough so I can reach my foot but I end up leaning like I’m in Pisa, then resort to using the bed for support.

Why is that? What causes us to be less stable on our feet as we become seasoned lifers on this planet? I always thought balance was controlled by our inner ears, yet last time I looked, nothing had changed in my inner ears. So why has my ability to stand on one leg diminished?

I’ve deduced that lack of balance has to do with loss of ankle strength. Yet I intentionally work at building up my ankles and I still teeter from time to time. To encourage sturdy ankles I stand on one foot, then the other as I brush my teeth, slowly raising and lowering the free foot. I log miles on my trotters every single day. (I love the iPhone app that counts my every step, especially this past year when I got to see the bar graph shoot upward when COVID changed the world. Logging miles became an obsession.) To top it off, I practice yoga, a balance enhancer for sure. My ankles are pillars of might.

If it’s not my inner ears and it’s not my ankles, what is it that makes me tipsy sometimes? (Don’t get any ideas. I rarely drink more than a glass of wine or a beer anymore. I just can’t imbibe without waking up with a headache, even after one lowly—and lovely—glass of wine. It’s another side effect of aging.)

Because I want some balance in my life, I decided I should know technically what it is. When I asked my computer, about 2,250,000,000 answers became available.

(For starters, there is work/life balance, radial balance, credit card balance, balanced budget, balanced diet, the past participle and present participle forms of the word, and balanced news.) (Wait. Balanced news? Since when!)

I picked one out to share: Balance is determined by a complex combination of muscle strength, visual inputs, the inner ear and the work of specialized receptors in the nerves of your joints, muscles, ligaments and tendons that orient you in relation to other objects.

In other words, to have balance we need good eyes, good ears, sensitive nerves, and healthy bone connectors. Without any one of these, we wobble. Without several, we fall down.

Why do we tip over more frequently with more birthdays under our belts? Because aging dulls our senses. Our nerves don’t react as quickly, plus over the years we become less active. (We like to think we are the exception because we hike and bike and ski and run. But watch a five-year-old at the playground sometime. You were that rambunctious at that age. An AARP member bouncing around like that would raise some eyebrows.) When we slow down we lose strength, then we lose confidence and the next thing we know, we’re a tumblin’ tumbleweed.

What can we do to delay this inevitable decline? Easy peazy: • One-legged stands: Stand on one foot for 30 seconds or longer, then switch to the other foot. You can do this while brushing your teeth or waiting around for your vaccine (there are some of us who haven’t gotten our shots yet, you know). If this is too simple, try doing it with your eyes closed.

Still too easy? Rub your tummy, pat your head, roll your tongue and wiggle your ears while balancing on one foot—with your eyes closed. If that’s a piece-a cake, you need to join the circus.

• Sit-to-stand: Without using your hands, get up from a straight-backed chair and sit back down 10 to 20 times. This improves balance and leg strength. Don’t do this when strangers are nearby. They’ll worry—not that you’ll lose your balance, but that you’ve lost your mind.

• Heel rises: While standing, rise up on your toes as far as you can. Then drop back to the starting position and repeat the process 10 to 20 times. You can make this more difficult by holding hand weights—or bowling balls. Two in each hand.

• Heel-toe walk: Take 20 steps, placing the heel of the front foot directly in front of the toe of the back foot while looking straight ahead. Warning! Do not do this if you have been drinking! Especially if there is a law enforcement officer in the vicinity.

And put the bowling balls down first.

Estes Park EDC Board Member Spotlight The Estes Park Economic Development Corporation (Estes Park EDC) Board of Directors recently approved Walter Kochansky of Delaware North to join its Board in January. Delaware North owns both the Ridgeline Hotel and Trendz retail store in Downtown Estes Park.

Having spent the first 40 years of his life in Ohio, Walter decided to set on a path to explore the U.S. His love of National Parks is obvious from his adventures in managing lodging properties near Olympic, Shenandoah, Glacier, Yellow Stone, Sequoia, and other National Parks before settling down here in Estes Park. Walter’s experience working for Red Roof and now Delaware North has allowed him to travel to 48 of the 50 states.

Walter moved to Estes Park in June of 2020 as the new General Manager of the Ridgeline Hotel. While Estes Park is one of the most loved mountain communities, his move to paradise was not without its challenges; not only has Walter had to face managing a hotel during the COVID-19 pandemic, but also through the wildfire evacuations. During the

temporary closure of the Ridgeline Hotel, Walter has been leading efforts to deep clean the rooms and property and oversee indoor renovations. The hotel will re-open full time on March 11 and will continue to prioritize health, safety, and the guest experience. In May, the Ridgeline Hotel will have a new addition of a game room for children and adults.

Walter values the economic development and sustainability of Estes Park stating, “It’s important to keep growing Estes and redefining what we are.” He is pleased to see that Workforce Housing is an issue being addressed by the Town, Estes Park EDC and community partners. He is looking forward to becoming more involved in the Estes Park EDC and the community. Walter describes his goal as being involved and actively communicating with people on the Board, in order to learn more about the needs of local businesses and residents of Este Park. Organizations Launch Duck Adoption Sales Campaigns By: Rita DuChateau

The sales campaign for Duck Adoptions for the 2021 Rotary Duck Race Festival is officially underway. Following a March 1 virtual meeting of representatives of 65 participating organizations, sales began online at www.epduckrace.org. The first person to adopt a duck: Estes Park Mayor Wendy Koenig, who also declared Saturday, May 1 Rotary Duck Race Day in Estes Park.

Koenig, who told the attendees that she was the recipient of a Rotary college scholarship as a high school senior, noted that she was delighted to speak to the group. She thanked the Rotary Club of Estes Park and Participating Organizations for their good work on behalf of the Estes Park community.

Sharing of sales tools and tips, adoptions process, special promotions, and encouragement headlined the March 1 meeting, presided over by Big Duck ’21 Bill Solms. The session also featured Lee Lasson’s instructions on online sales, including use of a mobile device’s camera to automatically enter credit card numbers and expiration dates for adoption transactions. Duck Race Mascot Lucky reminded participating organizations

that the big, feathered friend is available for club and event appearances, both person and virtual.

The cost to adopt a duck remains $20, with an additional $2 handling fee per adoption.

Due to ongoing concerns for the health and safety of volunteers and representatives of Participating Organizations, all 2021 Rotary Duck Race Adoptions will be handled online. There will be no paper adoption forms available.

The Rotary Duck Race Festival begins with a “Pre-Flight Show” at noon Saturday, May 1, livestreamed from the Estes Park Community Center, where thousands of little yellow rubber duckies will swim this year. The event will be available for viewing on YouTube, Facebook and TDS Channel 8/108 - The Rocky Mountain Channel. No in-person attendance will be permitted. One of the March 1 meeting participants took time to recognize the hard work of the Rotary Club of Estes Park in putting on the virtual event that helps so many nonprofits in the Estes Valley.

The top five prizes will be announced as the ducks come in, and names of all winners will be posted on epduckrace.org on May 1 by 5 p.m. All winners will be notified by email of their lucky prize. Top prizes include two travel packages and three cash prizes.

Village Thrift Shop Grants

Grant applications for 2021 from the Village Thrift Shop (VTS) are now available for charitable organizations providing services to the Estes Valley community. Non-profits determined by the Internal Revenue Service to operate as a 501(c) (3) and registered in good standing with the Colorado Secretary of State are encouraged to complete and submit a request for funding

by March 31, 2021. After review by the VTS Board of Directors, funding will be distributed in early May. Grant applications and guidelines are available for download at the VTS website, www.epvillagethrift.org/grant-application. Alternatively, copies will be available near the front door of the shop located at 1138 Manford Avenue in Estes Park. The completed application package should be returned via mail or email by the end of March.

The Village Thrift Shop is a nonprofit corporation that generates revenue through the resale of donated goods. Generous donors, considerate

business partners, a dedicated all-volunteer staff, and loyal patrons support VTS profit sharing. Over the past four years, $632,000 has been distributed to nonprofits providing critical services in the Estes Valley.

The Village Thrift Shop has been in COVID closure for the past year but sustained through contingency funds set aside by the VTS Board of Directors. It is likely that operations will resume in the near future as the elderly volunteer staff complete their vaccination series. A portion of the contingency funds will be used for this cycle of grants but at a total far less than the average of $158,000. Applicants for VTS funds should manage expectations accordingly.

Volunteers are ready to return, donors are ready to donate, and patrons are more than ready to patronize. With this formula and renewed spirit, the Village Thrift Shop will continue to support other Estes Park non-profits.

Eagle Scout Collecting Donations For Project To Build Gazebo For EVCA

My name is Alexander Hoskins. I'm from Boy Scout Troop 8 here in Estes Park. I am currently working on raising money for my Eagle Scout project. For the project, I am going to be providing a gazebo and basketball hoop for the Estes Valley Crisis Advocates' shelter for domestic violence victims. The shelter is a safe space for those who are facing abusive situations at home.

The gazebo will provide a calm place for residents to sit outside and take a deep breath of fresh air. The basketball hoop will provide teenagers/kids a way to have some fun. I am raising funds through GoFundMe and asking for donations to Troop 8 for the project.

HOSA-Future Health Professionals Champions At Estes Park High School

By: Cynda Basch Estes Park High School HOSA Future Health Professionals has a lot to celebrate this week! We had our State Leadership Conference this week and had some fantastic results! Students participated in various sessions, as well as competed in both skills events and knowledge (testing) events. Our conference included over 1,000 students at all levels of competition, including middle school, high school, and college level competitors.

Meah Weaver (10th grade) competed in Pathophysiology and was a State Finalist.

This means she was in the top 10! She also competed in Pharmacology, Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) skills, and CPR/First Aid. Makana Land (11th grade vice-president of our chapter) and Makayla Fraley (11th grade president of the chapter) competed in CERT skills and placed 3rd in Colorado! They moved up from 4th in round one, with lots of practice and training from Debbie Holmes of Estes Park Health ambulance service. The team also competed in CPR/First Aid skills in round one, qualifying for round two in 15th place, but they chose to move up in CERT skills for the final round.

Makana also competed in Medical Terminology and Makayla also tried out Nutrition. Both were also elected by the chapter to be our voting delegates at the State Leadership Conference, representing us in the business session.

Jana Coop (senior) competed in Physical Therapy skills, and placed 2nd in Colorado! She moved up from 8th place after round one. She studied, practiced, and

enjoyed shadowing and training with Ali Hummelberg of Alpenstrong Physical Therapy.

Students in the top three qualify to compete at International Leadership Conference in Orlando in June, and all members are welcome to the conference, so we will be trying to figure out if it will happen in person or not this year, but we are so excited!

We are proud of all of our EPHS HOSA students who competed and participated at the state conference. Abby Kamprath (11th, Secretary) competed in Medical Law and Ethics, as well as CERT and CPR/First Aid skills. Mikah Gaye (10th, Historian and Parliamentarian) competed in Physical Therapy skills, Medical Spelling and Medical Terminology. Rebeca Leon Erives (11th) competed in Nurses Aide and Medical Assistant, and Tobi Ho competed in Veterinary Skills. Edith Fernandez Zamarron (12th) participated in the conference learning activities and supported her teammates in competition. All of the students have learned so much through their personal drive and interest and are going to be a huge asset to the medical community.

EPHS HOSA has also focused in the last couple of weeks on the national HOSA service project, Be The Match.

Our tiny chapter is currently in 9th place nationally for fundraising for this worthy project that coordinates and funds bone marrow donation for patients with blood and bone cancers and diseases.

This not only shows the service of the students, but the strength of the support they enjoy in Estes Park.

Girl Scout Cadette Troop #70455, under the leadership of Christine Guy, is hosting a Sister Sledding Party to recruit younger girls into Girl Scouting in Estes Park. This event is free and open to all girls from Kindergarten through 5th grade. These girls would enter Girl Scouts as Daisies (K + 1st), Brownies (2nd & 3rd) and Juniors (4th & 5th).

Bring your sled, your parents or caregivers, and your friends, and join the Cadettes on Wednesday, March 10th from 3:00-5:00 p.m. at the YMCA of the Rockies sledding hill. Be sure to wear your winter garb: jackets, hats, boots, mittens and prepare to meet your older sisters in Girl Scouting while playing in the snow. Parking is available just inside the YMCA entrance, to the south side of Dorsey Pond.

Parents or other adults, interested in becoming leaders or troop helpers are welcome, too. Registrations for membership in Girl Scouts of Colorado can be taken at the event, with the help of Volunteer Support Specialist, Susan Kabat.

Some special Girl Scout “goodies” will be given away during the party, along with refreshments, including, of course, Girl Scout cookies. Cookies can also be purchased from Cadettes at the event.

Estes Park Middle School Choirs are beginning a contact-free fundraising campaign that not only benefits the choir students but also veterans in Colorado.

Beginning March 2 through March 15, all EPMS choir students will be selling socks-colorful, fun, playful socks. A three-pack of these socks may be purchased for $27.99. But that’s not all! For every three-pack that is sold, the choir students are donating one pair of warm socks to Colorado Veterans Living Community Living Center at Fitzsimons.

Melissa Blair-O’Shaughnessy, Recreational Therapy Director at the Center commented, “Thank you so much for selecting us to receive the benefits of all your students' hard work! We will gladly accept socks to honor our veterans.”

I have been a busy bee lately. Finally, I am over the side effects from my two Covid-19 vaccines. I have gotten my energy back, and I am making up for lost time. I have been looking at new cars for some time and last Thursday, I just went and bought one. Some of my children are happy for me, especially because of the great, new safety features. Others, wonder why. My eleven year old Highlander was in great shape, so much so that Chris’, son, came from Nevada to buy it.

I am having double fold pleasure, a new car and a visit from my son. He has been playing handyman around my home, giving Greg and Marie a little break. Unfortunately, something broke that he cannot fix, the furnace.

Maybe I should not have spent money on a new car? Heck no, I love my new Moon Dust Highlander. I still do not know how to use all the “bells and whistles,” but have the instruction book and I will conquer.

I had Greg and his family over to visit with Chris the other night. I fixed Cincinnati chili. We lived in Cincinnati for a few years. In fact, Marie was born there. Years before that, my mother would always have chili/mac.

My great grandmother, Esther, lived in Cincy when she first came to America, and taught my mother about the dish when she lived with us.

It is rather different from chili con carne and is a Cincinnati tradition.

There are chili parlors all around Cincy that only serves this chili. You can have it 2, 3, 4 or 5 ways: The second way is mac and chili, third way is with onions, or beans, or cheese, and go up the scale. Then put oyster crackers on top. I just had cornbread instead of crackers. Now, I had the beans in the chili from the start and let the guests add what they wanted.

1 large bay leaf or 2 smaller ones 2 Tbs. cider vinegar ½ oz. unsweetened chocolate Salt to taste I lb. plus a little more of pasta, I used thin spaghetti. Cook according to directions.

Supposed to serve 8 (my crew of five ate it all).

4 cups unsalted beef broth 2 pounds lean ground beef 1 Tbs. olive or vegetable oil 3 cups chopped onions 16 ozs. tomato sauce (2 small cans) 1 Tbs. chopped garlic ¼ cup chopped parsley ¼ cup plus 1 Tbs. fresh chili powder (to your taste) 1 tsp. ground cumin (I added a little more) 1 scant tsp. cinnamon ¼ tsp. allspice You can add ¼ tsp. ground cloves (I did not) You can add hot sauce to taste (I did not) 15 oz. drained and washed can of red kidney beans.

8 oz. sharp, (not extra sharp) grated cheddar 1 med. chopped white onion Oyster crackers or cornbread if you are southern.

I used a slow cooker, but you can do this in a Dutch oven or large pot on the range.

Heat oil and fry down the ground beef until no longer pink. Drain excess oil, if any. Add onion and cook until soft and transparent. Add garlic and cook for one minute. Add rest of ingredients and cook in slow cooker on high for three hours with lid slightly ajar, or one hour on the range. Stir as often as needed. You will know how much you want it to thicken. You may need to add a bit of water or broth if you like it more like a soup.

The Estes Park Woman’s Club To Meet Via Zoom Wednesday, March 10 The Estes Park Woman’s Club will meet at 12 noon via Zoom on Wednesday, March 10, 2021.

The speaker will be the Estes Park Health physician, Dr. Amanda Luchsinger.

She will discuss Women’s Health.

Dr. Luchsinger joined Estes Park Health in November 2008 after having previously worked at Morton Plant Mease Primary Care in Dunedin, Florida. Although born British, Dr. Luchsinger grew up in Africa, but studied in England. She received her Doctor of Medicine from the Medical

College of Wisconsin, and completed her residency at the University of South Florida. Dr. Luchsinger is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and provides a full spectrum of adult medicine. Her focus is on prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of a wide range of medical conditions. Dr. Luchsinger is a naturalized American citizen and lives in Estes Park with her husband.

She has two grown children. She enjoys literature and writing.

There will also be a presentation about the paid parking in Estes Park which is scheduled to begin in 2021.

Five Fun Facts About… The Fox Squirrel By: Dawn Wilson

This week’s featured animal is the fox squirrel. Although more prevalent in communities along the Front Range, the fox squirrel can be seen in Estes Park but not typically in Rocky Mountain National Park. Here are a few more fun facts about this busy little animal.

1. Colorado is home to three tree squirrels: fox, Abert’s and pine.

2. The fox squirrel is the largest species of tree squirrel native to North America.

3. Similar in appearance to the eastern gray squirrel, with a gray upper body and big, bushy tail, the fox squirrel can be identified by its brownish-orange underside. The fox squirrel may also be seen in a full black coat, but this color variation is more prevalent in lower-elevation towns along the Front Range.

4. Eastern Colorado is on the western

edge of the fox squirrel’s natural range.

They have also been introduced in other western states, like California, Oregon and Montana.

5. Fox squirrels are diurnal (active during the day) and spend much of their time foraging for food on the ground.

They are, however, agile climbers and build caches of food for later consumption. Shelled foods, like nuts, are preferred for storage because they do not

spoil as quickly as non-shelled foods.

Fox squirrels are agile climbers where they forage on food, build nests and escape predators on the ground.

Fox squirrels do not hibernate in the winter but don't seem to like the cold either. Rather they will dart across snow as quickly as possible when going to food sources and then huddle back up in the warmth of their nest.

Although some people see squirrels as pests and destructive, they can be pretty cute, are very curious, and a challenge to photograph because of their high activity level.

Although more commonly seen with a grey coat, there are some small populations of fox squirrels with an all-black coat in lower elevation towns.

When Mountain Lions Meet People Mountain lions are generally calm, quiet, and elusive. They tend to live in remote, primitive country with plentiful deer and adequate cover. Such conditions exist in mountain subdivisions, urban fringes, and open spaces. Recently, the number of mountain lion/human interactions has increased. This increase is likely due to a variety of reasons, such as: • More people moving into lion habitat • Increase in deer populations and density • Presumed increase in lion numbers and expanded range • More people using hiking and running trails in lion habitat • A greater awareness of the presence of lions.

If You Encounter a Mountain Lion

Do not approach a lion, especially one that is feeding or with kittens. Most mountain lions will try to avoid a confrontation. Give them a way to escape.

Stay calm when you come upon a lion.

Talk calmly and firmly to it. Move slowly.

Do all you can to appear larger. Raise your arms. Open your jacket if you're wearing one. If you have small children with you, protect them by picking them up so they won't panic and run.

People rarely get more than a brief glimpse of a mountain lion in the wild.

Lion attacks on people are rare, with fewer than a dozen fatalities in North America in more than 100 years. Most of the attacks were by young lions, perhaps forced out to hunt on their own and not yet living in established areas. Young lions may key in on easy prey, like pets and small children.

No studies have been done to determine what to do if you meet a lion. However, based on observations by people who have come upon lions, some patterns of behavior and response are beginning to emerge. With this in mind, the following suggestions may be helpful.

Remember: Every situation is different with respect to the lion, the terrain, the people, and their activity.

Go in groups when you walk or hike in mountain lion country, and make plenty of noise to reduce your chances of surprising a lion. A sturdy walking stick is a good idea; it can be used to ward off a lion. Make sure children are close to you and within your sight at all times. Talk with children about lions and teach

down or turning your back.

Wave your arms slowly and speak firmly.

What you want to do is convince the lion you are not prey and that you may in fact be a danger to the lion.

Fight back if a lion attacks you. Lions have been driven away by prey that fights back. People have fought back with rocks, sticks, caps or jackets, garden tools and their bare hands successfully. Remain standing or try to get back up!

To reduce the risk of problems with mountain lions on or near your property, we urge you to follow these simple precautions: Make lots of noise if you come and go during the times mountain lions are most active: dusk to dawn.

Install outside lighting. Light areas where you walk so you could see a lion if one were present.

Closely supervise children whenever they play outdoors. Make sure children are inside before dusk and not outside before dawn. Talk with children about lions and teach them what to do if they meet one.

Landscape or remove vegetation to eliminate hiding places for lions, especially around children's play areas. Make it difficult for lions to approach unseen.

Planting non-native shrubs and plants that deer often prefer to eat encourages wildlife to come onto your property.

Predators follow prey. Don't feed any wildlife!

Keep your pet under control. Roaming pets are easy prey and can attract lions.

Bring pets in at night. If you leave your pet outside, keep it in a kennel with a secure top. Don't feed pets outside; this can attract raccoons and other animals that are eaten by lions.

Store all garbage securely.

Place livestock in en-

closed sheds or barns at night. Close doors to all outbuildings since inquisitive lions may go inside for a look.

Encourage your neighbors to follow these simple precautions. Prevention is far better than a possible lion confrontation.

THE YEAR THAT THE PANDEMIC HAS STOLEN

In late 1874, 12-year-old Lillie Marcks stepped out the door of her parents’ house and noticed what looked like a snow cloud covering the sun. It was the beginning of a plague that would destroy the sense of wellbeing of people in several Midwestern states: Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado, and Missouri, throughout the next year. A horde of Rocky Mountain locusts descended on the crops in the area and the scourge devastated the entire region. They came in swarms, millions, even (estimated) trillions. They darkened the heavens in their flight, and blackened the earth’s surface, as the horde of insects sought their daily meal. Their voracity soon made itself apparent as whole fields of green corn were wiped out in a single day and every spear of wheat, oats, flax and hay were eaten close to the ground. Potatoes and all other vegetables and fruits received the same treatment, and during the year-long plague, ruin stared the farmers in the face, some moved out, others stayed, sadly actually losing family members to starvation. Nothing escaped the locusts: clothing and bedding were attacked; there appeared to be nothing they would not eat; and in their path they left the country nearly as bare of vegetation as if it had been scorched by fire. (Read “When the skies turned black, the locust plague of 1875” by Hearthstone Publications or the Wikipedia report.)

When I read the historic description of this devastation, I was reminded that in the days of God’s prophet, Joel, God told him to warn the people of a ‘day of looming darkness and gloom’, which was fulfilled in a similar plague of locust like that in 1875. Listen to his description: “What the cutting locust left, the swarming locust has eaten, and the hopping locust, and the destroying locust, it has laid waste my vines and splintered my fig trees…storehouses are desolate and granaries ruined because the grain has failed.” (Joel 1) This plague devastated the lives of Joel’s people.

It killed their livestock, ruined livelihoods and left a nation distraught and vulnerable.

I can’t read the reports of such ‘plagues’ without noting the similarity to that which we have experienced for the past year. Ours has killed, not livestock, but people. It has ruined livelihoods, and left our nation…even world…distraught and vulnerable. It’s important to note that both their plague and ours are natural disasters that may not have been able to be prevented. Often we think of ‘bad things’ visiting people as punishment for sin. God only knows if these plagues were as a result of this. Peoples’ suffering is usually caused by one of three things: other’s actions and mistreatment of them; their own poor choices and misbehavior; and, thirdly, misfortune due to the fact that we live in a world where ‘bad things happen to even good people.’ This seems to be what the 1875 people and our people are dealing with, even though appealing to God for deliverance was urged and evident during both times.

Obviously, for us in our current dilemma, we are not deeply concerned about locusts, but about our own ‘plague’…Covid-19. While this pandemic may not have resulted from God’s punishing hand, nevertheless, it certainly is something that we need His help to avoid and His help for our health system to eventually be able to remedy. Therefore, we do need to examine ourselves and see how we are in our relationship with Him so we can call on Him and find His favor in confronting our plague.

In Joel’s book, you learn that God gave an encouraging promise to those sufferers: “I will repay you for the years that the swarming locusts have eaten…you shall eat in plenty and be satisfied, and praise the name of the Lord your God who has dealt wondrously with you.” God promised to give His blessings so that they would more than recover from the losses suffered during their plague. I am confident that He will do the same with us in dealing with ours.

May this example of God’s care and blessing be considered as we deal with our current plague! He is alive…and He still rewards those who trust Him.

We Become The Sum Of Our Experiences I look into the faces of children today and wonder how they will be changed by current events like the COVID pandemic, and the January 6th storming of the capital. I grew up during a pretty transformative time in history: the conservative 1950s and the turbulent 60s. One of my earliest memories was of standing next to my Dad, outside looking at the starry night sky. A bright shining light passed by overheard between the stars. “That’s Sputnik,” my Dad said in wonderment. “I see it,” I whispered into the night and tracked the small bright object across the sky. To this day I truly believe I did see it.

However, even though Sputnik orbited the Earth for 21 days, circling it approximately every 97 minutes, it was only the size of a beach ball and it was 150 miles above us. Did I really see it? Before Sputnik, stars were pretty and bedtime was when it got dark. That October 1957 event created a special night for an almost seven-year-old to be with her Dad welcoming in the dawn of the Space Age. By the early 1960s, the world seemed to moving as fast as Sputnik. That’s when the newly elected Governor of Alabama, George Wallace stated, “segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever.” Life presented an iconic image of Wallace demonstrating his loyalty to the cause of segregation by literally blocking the door when black students, Vivian Malone and James A. Hood tried to enter the University of Alabama. Civil rights protests, sit-ins and boycotts were also occurring.

These events were live on TV for all Americans to witness southern police brandishing firehoses that knocked black people down in the streets while German Shepherds on leashes strained to attack. At the age of 12, I was coming face to face with the racism in our country. For today’s kids, witnessing violence against black people on TV is practically a common occurrence. Is it making them kinder, more compassionate or is it creating the opposite?

The assassination of President Kennedy in November 1963, occurred two days before my 13th birthday. I remember being outside playing field hockey in gym class when someone ran up to tell us to come in, the president has been shot. When I got home my Mom was crying, the TV was on, and I remember Jackie Kennedy in a suit and pill box hat and Vice President Johnson, with his hand on a bible.

Inconceivably, two days later while police were holding Lee Harvey Oswald (the alleged assassin), Jack Ruby shot him in the basement of the Dallas Police Station right in front of news cameras.

Did I really see a man getting shot on television? I can still see Oswald’s hands coming up attempting to protect himself, his eyes shut, his mouth a silent O. Children today may have also witnessed a murder on television, George Floyd getting choked to death in nine minutes.

Two more assassinations would take place in the 60s: Martin Luther King, Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy. Both assassinations happened in 1968, the year I graduated from high school.

All I have to do is close my eyes to conjure up visions of those news photos: the men on the balcony pointing to where the assassin’s bullet came from and the stunned bus boy kneeling down to Kennedy’s body in the hotel, where he had just finished a speech after winning the California Presidential Primary. Will kids today close their eyes and see visions of violent men and women breaking into the Capital on January 6th, armed with confederate flags, guns and rifles, shields, poles, knives and even molotov cocktails?

Vietnam was my generation’s war and something that very definitely changed us all back then. It was a war that tore apart our nation as surely as politics are tearing us apart today. Vietnam was the backdrop to my high school years and as we got closer to graduation, it became ever more real as classmates, boyfriends and brothers signed up for the draft.

The vivid green Vietnam jungle was presented to us every night by Huntley and Brinkley who brought the Ho Chi Minh Highway, the DMZ zone, Tet Offensive and Saigon to us. What wars will our kids remember? Wars aren’t covered today the way they were in my time. So maybe they won’t be as significant to kids today.

I know all this sounds grim, but there were many happy and exciting events as well that had an impact on me. The night Apollo 11 landed on the moon was one such event. “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind,” bounced back from the moon and into our homes. I was eighteen and it was only twelve years since Sputnik first raced across the night sky.

Another joyous and life changing event occurred barely a month after the moon landing.

A couple of friends and I thought making our way to a music festival about 30 miles from college would be cool. We got a ride north about five miles from a small farming town named Bethel. We walked those miles packed with other people our age wearing jeans and t-shirts to the festival site. It rained hard at times and it was sunny the rest. That night, we found an empty place to throw down a blanket and early the next morning, I woke to Grace Slick of the Jefferson Airplane singing White Rabbit.

I went to back Woodstock in 2018, and looking out over the acres of rolling green meadow, I could still imagine those thousands of young people celebrating three days of peace, love and rock n’ roll. We are all the sum of our experiences – the good ones and the bad ones. Our children will be too. In this time of political division and a pandemic, we need to remember to also fill our children’s and grandchildren’s lives with love, hope, music and laughter.

Congratulations to Daphne Parker, the Estes Park High School Student of the Week for March 5, 2021.

At EPHS, Daphne’s favorite classes are art and tech. She said, “In both classes I get to be creative and that is what I love about them. I am very proud to say that I have 4.08 GPA and I’m currently at the top of my class.”

Outside of school she enjoys digital art and watching anime. She often does both things at once and finds it very relaxing and fun. Daphne said, “I recently moved to Estes after living in Okinawa Japan for nearly nine years. This is my first year of school in America and thanks to my amazing friends, it has been a great one!”

Daphne’s favorite quote is “In the name of the mood, I’ll punish you!” by Usagi Sailor Moon. Daphne said, “I really like this quote because the show, ‘Sailor Moon’ brings me a lot of joy.”

All About The Estes Valley Sunrise Rotary Covid-19 has certainly not halted our work in the community and around the world! Our pledge in the Estes Valley Sunrise Rotary Club is “Service Above Self ” and we invite you to become a part of our club!

Estes Valley Sunrise Rotary Club was chartered in 1987 with 28 members. To this day, the main purpose of our Rotary Club is service; service to fellow Rotarians, to the Estes Park community and to the world!

The heart and soul of the Sunrise Rotary are the club committees. The club has about sixty members who divide their time between six major committees, working on personal areas of interest.

Youth Services Committee: Helps to foster strong programs for young people in the community. It strives to pinpoint area needs and works to fill the gaps.

This past summer, Sunrise Rotary provided funding for two winning, traveling Estes Valley Recreation District baseball

spring to graduating high school students who plan to pursue four-year degrees, associate degrees and trade school opportunities. In 2020, we funded $10,000 in local scholarships.

Social Committee: Sunrise Rotary is a fun group to socialize with! We currently practice social distancing with social events/gatherings on Zoom including board games, wine tasting, bingo, trivia contests and much more!

International Committee: This club is very involved with Rotary International in global projects such as providing clean water, education, housing, and health, etc. Working in conjunction with Rotary International is key to the success of Sunrise Rotary. Many of our local members are dedicated to quality-oflife contributions throughout the world.

For example, Sunrise Rotary has partnered with a Fort Collins Rotary Club to build modular homes for lower income residents in Juarez, Mexico. Members are active in the effort to eradicate polio

awards. Other areas of youth-oriented work include: • “Plant A Book-Grow A Child” • Interact Club in the high school • Sponsoring an International Exchange student locally • Opportunities to volunteer with Rotary members to experience “giving back.”

The event also features a classic car show, kids activities and a raffle drawing in which the winner is guaranteed a Grand Prize of $10,000. There are also additional cash prizes, but, only 300 raffle tickets are available.

Community Service Committee: Since

Why Worry?

Sometimes, it is terribly difficult to accept the limitations of today’s world – especially the restrictions on face-to-face communication (and no hugging that two year old great granddaughter). It is unnerving to believe that Mother Nature is so tired of the human race that she sent a pandemic, hurricanes, wildfires and the polar vortex to force us to reevaluate our insistence that the world has not changed. Perhaps it is not “Mother Nature” seeking to eliminate a threat. Why would “she” force the pica evacuation to higher elevations for their very existence? Why would “she” eliminate the glaciers when the polar bears have no where to go? Why would “she” entice animals of land and sea to eat the plastic we create?

Perhaps it is easier to accept the scientific findings that the warming Earth could be causing the glaciers to melt, forcing animals to migrate when they never have before, and increasing the winds that cause more volatile storms, fires, and floods. Perhaps the warming Earth is linked to the increased air pollution that is magnifying respiratory disease and shortening human (and animal) lives. I learned as a child that country air is fresher than city air. My parents told me that more people causes “thicker” air. On frequent trips to Los Angeles in ‘80s, this was vividly obvious.

My own household stuck to small cities, and when we got tired of the persistent gray (in both sky and snow), we moved here.

But warm air rises. Even here, we can hide from pollution, but we cannot totally avoid it. We gave all our air conditioners to the children, not needing

them in Estes where it is 10-15 degrees cooler than the heat of the Front Range summer. Still, the temperature seems warmer that it was 10 years ago. There were days last summer when I wished I had kept one hefty cooling machine for the office. The fans were not keeping up.

And, wondering, I went to the internet.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) the US average temperature, is increasing steadily, a continuous rise at an increasing rate over the last 70 years. The effect became serious around 1980, easily seen in the time lapse presentation at https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/world -of-change/global-temperatures. Technological advances from satellites to the space station, assisted the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in collecting data related to the temperature rise, the warming ocean, the shrinking ice sheets, the retreat of the glaciers, the decreased snow cover, the rise in the sea level, the declining artic sea ice, the acidification of our oceans, and the extreme high and low temperature events as well as those involving rainfall. Anyone wanting more information, these websites are a good place to start.

We will be, probably, only a few degrees hotter in my lifetime, but how many in the life of that great granddaughter? Perhaps it is time to pay attention to the indications that this phenomenon is largely a result of human activity...that it is not too late, that we are still in control, that there are still things we can do short of abandoning Earth and starting over somewhere else.

Jason and Toni Brese are proud to be the new owners of Range View Security LLC. They started their new business on January 26, 2021.

Range View Security was built and had been operated by Steve Vogt since 1987.

Unfortunately, Steve passed away in November 2020. His children wanted to sell the business to someone who would keep this great security business their father built going strong. They decided to sell the business to Jason Brese who had worked with Steve years ago. Steve expressed that he wanted to continue to offer the services Steve had, as well as add some additional services.

Jason Brese has been in the security industry since 2001, when he started at Inovonics Wireless as a Technical Services Rep. In 2005, he moved to Jackson, WY with his wife and there he worked at a company very similar to Range View Security, installing fire, security and environmental monitoring systems. When he moved to Estes Park in 2008, he worked briefly for Steve Vogt before returning to work at Inovonics Wireless working as a software engineer. He en-

joyed working with Steve and talked to him about purchasing Range View Security once Steve was ready to retire.

Jason said, “Range View Security is the only local security installation and monitoring company. We live in Estes Park and care about our community. We offer many services beyond the typical intrusion installation, such as high and low temperature monitoring, water detection, smoke and fire detection, along with WiFi/CCTV cameras. Adding a system can be done almost completely wirelessly, so if your house isn’t wired for it, there are solutions. The competition has to drive from the valley, whereas we can respond within minutes.”

Borrow A Wi-Fi Hotspot To Connect From Home Or Outdoors Are you without a Wi-Fi server at home? Wish you could connect to Internet while relaxing outdoors or on a hiking trail? The Estes Valley Library’s new Hotspots for Checkout might be just the solution.

How does it work? Library patrons can now borrow a Jetpack Hotspot device, which uses cell towers to create a password-protected Wi-Fi network to use with any of your existing Wi-Fi devices (laptops, tablets, and phones).

You won’t need your own personal cellular account to use the Hotspot, but you will need to be in a place that

has a strong signal from a 4G or 5G Verizon cell tower. In places where you’re unable to make a cell call, the hotspot will likely experience a similar difficulty. Sometimes, a simple solution is to walk to a more open area (perhaps a meadow, or the top of ridge) to find the signal.

The Jetpack Hotspot has a 15-hour battery life, or you can stay plugged into an outlet. The screen display shows bars of service, and with full bars, you should be able to videostream or live-chat. Multiple family members may use the same hotspot simultaneously.

Currently, there are three Jetpack Hotspots available for one-week check-out, on display near the library’s Chromebooks for Checkout kiosk.

Hotspots come inside their own carrying case, which includes

the device, a charging cord, and easyto-use instructions. Placing an advance hold is not required for checkout, although that is recommended to assure availability.

Regional Project Highlights • Northeast Area: The CSFS is working to keep in check a hyperactive invasive species that is pushing out native vegetation, degrading wildlife habitat and draining water at Jackson Lake State Park and the nearby Andrick Ponds and Jackson Lake state wildlife areas. The CSFS is removing about half of the Russian olives that

• Southeast Area: Last year at Lake Pueblo State Park – one of the most popular state parks in Colorado with annual visitors exceeding 2.4 million – CSFS foresters assessed 191 trees over 200 acres of land to help keep park visitors safer. They focused on trees along trails and in campground areas, tagging those that posed safety concerns for mitigation by Colorado Parks & Wildlife.

• Southwest Area: While time seemed to slow down for many last year with stay-at-home orders due to COVID19, foresters in Gunnison County were in a rush to contain an outbreak of another kind ̶ the mountain pine beetle in the Taylor Canyon area. Had the beetle continued to increase populations at a rapid pace within lodgepole pine tree stands in this area, the risk of a catastrophic wildfire in the forest would greatly increase.

• Northwest Area: In the southeast corner of Jackson County, the CSFS is improving the forest landscape at Owl Mountain while at the same time bolstering revenue for the timber industry. Despite a declining wood products industry in the state, the CSFS is helping sustain this local economy in northwest Colorado through a 376-acre project that is creating jobs for loggers and timber mills and generating revenue for state and federal agencies through a timber sale.

Each year, the forest health report provides information to the Colorado General Assembly and residents of Colorado about the health and condition of forests across the state. Information for the report is

derived from an annual aerial forest health survey by the CSFS and U.S. Forest Service, Rocky Mountain Region, as well as field inspections, CSFS contacts with forest landowners and special surveys.

Keith Machin Long time Estes Park resident, Keith Machin died at Estes Park Health Thursday morning, February 25, 2021. He was 94 years old.

Keith E. Machin was born October 16, 1926 in Hays, KS. His parents were Ralph and Sylvia (Carlson) Machin.

Keith served his country during World War II in the United States Navy aboard the USS Wadleigh, USS Remey and USS Fullam in the Pacific Reserve Fleet San Diego, CA. He was awarded the American Area Campaign Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.

After being discharged in 1947, Keith moved from Wichita, KS to Estes Park where he married Marjorie Wright at the Presbyterian Church which is now the site of the Old Church Shops in Downtown. The couple moved into a home which they rebuilt themselves in 1950 and raised two daughters. Keith worked at the Estes Park Power Plant for 30 years.

terian Community Church of the Rockies and one of the longest members of American Legion Post 119 and a member of Masonic Lodge #183 of the AF & AM since the late 1950s.

He is survived by daughters Gail Lewis and husband Wayne of Longmont, CO and Sheryle Picard and husband Jerry of Highlands Ranch, CO and grandsons Richard Lewis, Brian Lewis and Bradley Harrah and brother Lee Machin of Estes Park.

A Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date. His unwavering generosity, kindness and never putting himself before others will always remain with us. Fiona Cahill Fiona Elizabeth Cahill passed away suddenly on February 26th.

She has gone to be with her parents on both sides of the family and be at peace in heaven.

She was 63 years old.

Fiona was born April 22nd, 1957 in (then known) British Guyana where her parents worked. At six months of age, the family returned to their home in Scotland where she grew up in Luthermuir. Her parents then secured jobs at the U.S. Naval Base in Edzell, Scotland. As a U.S. Navy sailor stationed at the base I, her husband Gary, came to know her parents and then ultimately the love of my life.

We married February 24th, 1979 and lived along the coast of Scotland in the quaint village of St. Cyrus. It was idyllic. Our traditional Scottish wedding included bagpipes, kilts, and dancing.

We had a small cottage on the cliffs of the North Sea where the wind and mist would frequently visit us. Fiona loved it as she would walk our dogs through the fields catching glimpses of seals and other wildlife. The local village shop, on her daily walks with dogs, would warmly greet her as she got our daily necessities. Fiona quickly became a favorite of our new village as she could strike up a conversation with anyone.

We moved many times over our marriage due to the job and every time, Fiona gladly looked forward to the new adventure. Somehow, someway when we were dating we had both expressed the desire to each other to someday live in Colorado. A lot of that desire had to do with the love for the state as expressed by John Denver in his music. You can only imagine her joy when we were able to transfer here in the summer of 1995.

Estes Park became our home. Fiona loved living here so much that she became a U.S. citizen. Again, just like in Scotland, she loved walking our dogs in such a scenic setting. Fiona was a Registered Nurse for over 40 years.

Here in Estes Park, she worked in var-

ious positions to include Timberline Medical Center, Director of Homecare and Hospice, and finished her career at Estes Park Health in the clinical arena. Fiona was born to be a nurse and loved seeing her patients, working with the staff and being a member of the community.

We had many dog breeds over the years and one that Fiona became in love with were bulldogs. She loved showing the breed at dog shows and always had the dream of someday having a champion bulldog at Westminster.

Fiona was preceded in death by her parents Jim and Amy Kidd. She is survived, respectively, by her daughter and husband Katrina and Craig (Carlson), her son and daughter-in-law Grant and Gena (Cahill), her brother Ian Kidd, and grandchildren Callum, Isla, and Collette.

From our entire family, we would like to thank everyone, near and far, for their sentiments. Fiona loved life and all of you. Please know that we feel your grief as she was a beloved wife, mother, and friend.

In lieu of flowers, please consider to making a donation to any organization supporting animal welfare in her name. Suggestions include The Estes Park Pet Association, the ASPCA, the Humane Society or The Wild Animal Sanctuary in Keenesburg, Colorado.
