Safeway, Country Market & League Of Women Voters Join Forces To Encourage Use Of Reusable Bags

Carried by the wind, single-use plastic bags litter our town and surroundings a regular reminder that our beautiful and unique gateway to the Rockies is degraded in a way that we can help prevent.

Now grocery stores in town have committed to joining forces with the League of Women Voters to encourage shoppers to help stem that flow with the simple step of using cloth or other reusable bags for their groceries.

Safeway - inevitably the largest provider of single-use plastic bags in town now carries a variety of reusable and colorful shopping bags, and recently introduced a produce box with sturdy carrying handles that folds flat and can be re-used time after time (and not only for produce). It's compact, strong and readily packed and unpacked-and easily stored. Tourists seem to especially love the Estes Park bags, bright and colorful,

Together, We Can Create The Historic Stanley Home Museum & Education Center Right now, we have a unique opportunity to preserve the beautiful Stanley Home as a historic museum and education center. This center will provide a historic reference point to current and future generations to show how F. O. Stanley’s achievements were the result of his foresight, generosity, creativity, and commitment, and how his accomplishments have provided tremendous, long-lasting benefits to our community.

F. O. Stanley played a central role in the development of the Estes Valley that we enjoy today. Through F. O. Stanley’s vision and support, the Stanley Hotel, Stanley Park, Stanley Heights, the first hydroelectric plant, the first fish hatchery, the creation of Rocky Mountain National Park, and the re-introduction of elk were accomplished. He was also instrumental in the paving of Highway 34, and Highway 36, was the first president of the First National Bank of Estes Park, and donated the land for the Stanley Fairgrounds and high school to the town.

The Stanley home has been beautifully and carefully preserved for 115 years by four successive owners. Estes Park’s Historian Laureate, Dr. Jim Pickering, views the Stanley Home as an architectural treasure that deserves to be preserved for the use and enjoyment of future generations.

The Historic Stanley Home Foundation was formed in 2017 by Estes Valley residents who were committed to establishing the Historic Stanley Home as a source of significant historic information and inspiration for our community

and visitors.

We expect this facility to be an educational, cultural, and economic benefit to our community as a destination for residents and visitors of all ages. We also anticipate there will be tour guide opportunities for our local high school students.

In 2018, the Foundation received all of the necessary approvals from the Town of Estes Park to move forward with this eff fort. The Foundation is now starting the 2019 Capital Campaign to complete raising funds to purchase the Stanley Home.

Right now, we have a great opportunity to transform the Stanley Home into the Historic Stanley Home Museum and Education Center. The current owners would like to sell the Stanley Home and we feel it is very important to preserve the home’s historic, cultural, educational, and inspirational value for our community and visitors for many generations to come. Other buyers might significantly modify the home or use the property for alternative developments, and this could mean the loss of this significant, priceless embodiment of our community’s history.

Information Sought In Estes Valley Elk Poaching Case Colorado Parks and Wildlife officials are asking the public for help solving a recent poaching case in the Estes Valley.

On the evening of Jan. 13, in the area of Devils Gulch Rd. (Colorado Road 43) and H Bar G Rd., a bull elk was shot and left.

For anyone with information of the incident, please contact CPW Wildlife Of-

To provide information anonymously about a wildlife violation, the public can contact Operation Game Thief at 877265-6648, by dialing #OGT from a Verizon cellphone, or by email at game.thief@state.co.us. Rewards are available if the information leads to an arrest or citation.

The charge(s) are merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

On January 21 at 12:51 a.m. police were called to a physical disturbance at 1310 Manford Ave. Upon arrival officers arrested a 38 year old male from Estes Park and charged him with child abuse, domestic violence, harassment and criminal mischief. He was transported to the Larimer County Jail.

ceived a report of a theft from a vehicle at 497 Pine River Lane. At this time there are no suspects and no leads. If you have any information on this theft please call the EPPD non-emergency number at 586-4000.

Estes Park School District finally has its own foundation to support its students, its staff, and the community. The Estes Park Education Foundation (EPEF) is a newly-formed 501c3 nonprofit with the following mission and vision to drive its work: Mission: Inspiring community investment through exemplary student learning experiences today to develop our citizens of tomorrow.

Vision: With the support of our community and a high quality education, all Estes Park School District R3 students graduate as thriving, successful, responsible citizens.

The values of the EPEF are expressed as our Pillars to support accomplishing our Mission and Vision: • Experiential Learning Opportunities to give students knowledge, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills • Innovations in Learning - to support new teaching ideas and strategies to strengthen learning • Building Community - to promote a culture of seamless unity between the schools and the rest of the community to optimize learning • Support of District Teachers and Staff - by providing supplemental assistance as well as appreciation for the work that they do for our students • Student Support - to ensure that they have the resources needed to participate in public schooling and extra-curricular activities, as well as support for early childhood education and transitioning after graduation • Wellness - as an integral part of learning and being successful in school and life, including physical activities, youth sports, and outdoor recreation More details regarding the EPEF can be found on our website: www.epeducationfoundation.org A steering committee (currently acting as an interim board of directors) has been working to set up the EPEF with bylaws and a framework of policies, etc., so that that first Board can be most focused on doing the work of EPEF for our community. The Board of Directors of the Estes Valley Land Trust held a planning retreat to lay out an ambitious future. The land trust has permanently protected nearly 10,000 acres of land since 1987 and the Board reaffirmed their commitment to additional land conservation.

“Estes Park is a special place and while change is inevitable, we see the need to continue preserving land in the valley,” said Robin Harding, Board President.

Recently the Estes Valley Land Trust partnered with the YMCA of the Rockies to preserve 127 acres of land at the Estes Park Center property. Conserving land that allows public access was identified as a top priority.

High visitation at Rocky Mountain National Park and an increasing appetite for outdoor recreation were the main reasons for focusing land conservation efforts on accessible land. “The Estes Park community is very active; hiking, skiing, climbing and even mountain biking are increasingly more popular. If the land trust can help preserve the scenic beauty of the valley and provide new areas to get outside, it’s a win-win,” said

Amy Plummer, member of the Board of Directors.

The land trust has partnered with the Town of Estes Park, Larimer County and others to pursue a Great Outdoors Colorado grant to fund an Estes Valley Open Space and Outdoor Recreation Plan. The plan would involve significant public input and allow the community to identify the locations and types of land that should be preserved. “The goals of the land trust reflect the interests of the community and we’re looking forward to leading an effort to become more strategic with our land conservation efforts,” said Vaughn Baker, member of the Board of Directors.

Great Outdoors Colorado expects to finalize their grant decision in March, and if awarded, the land trust would begin public outreach this summer. The Estes Valley Open Space and Outdoor Recreation Plan would be completed in conjunction with the Town’s new Comprehensive Plan, to ensure new growth in the valley is balanced with additional land conservation.

Community Gathers To T Celebrate The People Of Rocky Mountain National Park On January 24, the Estes Valley Library hosted “Celebrate the People of Rocky Mountain National Park!� a special program to appreciate the Park’s employees, contractors, volunteers and their families. Over 150 took part in the potluck dinner that also included storytelling and activities for all ages.

Over half of those attending were families who work for the Park. “It was so nice to see and feel the community’s support for our Park and our staff, � said Carissa Turner, a Park employee. “So heartwarming!�

Another employee expressed appreciation, noting, “This is the first family event I have heard of for furloughed workers and their families.� An end to the 35-day partial federal government shutdown was announced the following day.

Thursday’s event saw tremendous contributions of food from the community.

Participants left well-fed and many families took home goodie bags of leftovers.

Among the activities, there were 165 Rocky-themed buttons made, especially

by children, celebrating the lakes and mammals of the Park.

Rocky Mountain Conservancy (RMC) was the library’s key partner, and their staff delighted children with a hands-on display of animal furs and skulls.

Thanks to RMC, all children took home a free copy of the book “Cimarron: the Bighorn Sheep.�

Families, including kids, parents, grandparents and caregivers, gathered for a Rockythemed storytime led by Children’s Librarians Melanie Kozlowski and Apelles Morales.

The program concluded with a living history re-enactment of the life of Enos Mills, portrayed by librarian and performer Kurtis Kelly.

The library thanks all participants for their attendance and the generous sharing of food for the potluck. Appreciation also goes to the partnership support from Rocky Mountain Conservancy.

Estes Park Archives Kicks Off The New Year With A New Program At A New Location

John Cleave was Estes Park's first carpenter, but what did he actually build?

And when did he arrive in Estes Park, or, for that matter, when did he leave his native Cornwall to come to America?

All kinds of family stories swirl around John T. Cleave, including how he helped to rebuild Chicago after the great fire in 1871, but how many of these are true?

Indeed, how much, if anything, do we really know about the man responsible for downtown Estes Park as we enjoy it today?

Estes Park historian John Meissner, recently returned from England, will share some exciting new details about John

Cleave's life prior to his arrival in the United States. These findings may help explain why Cleave's assignation of "married" in the 1880 Estes Park census, well before his 1883 marriage to Shep Husted's aunt Margaret E. May, is probably not a recording error.

The program will be held in the new Mile High Coffee House (the former Starbucks) location at 356 East Elkhorn, on Saturday, February 2, beginning at 10:00 a.m. Because space will be limited, it is important that non-members call 586-4889 before the program to make a reservation.

Educational & Fun Trip To Washington D.C. With Jeff Arnold-For Adults If you have known students who have gone on the 8th grade Washington D.C. trip and wanted to go yourself, Jeff Arnold is leading a trip for adults only this coming October.

Mr. Arnold has been teaching U.S. history for over 25 years, and has yearly taken 8th graders to Washington, D.C. and Gettysburg for most of that time.

Besides teaching middle school, he also

teaches a class each year at the Senior Center on the Civil War. This trip will include touring the sites of Washington, as well as a tour the battlefield at Gettysburg.

There will be a meeting on Wednesday, February 6 at 6:00 p.m. at the middle school. The details of the trip will be discussed and questions answered.

Oops!... they did it again. They United States Postal Service raised the price of a first class stamp. The 10 percent increase, from 50 cents to 55, is the largest increase in Postal Service history.

Perhaps I wasn’t paying attention when notifications of this change appeared.

My main source of news these days is the daily newspaper, which has dwindled to the dimensions of an oversized post card so there isn’t a lot of news on its meager pages. I learned about the bump in postage fares when I read an article about it the day after the rate increase. If I’d known about it the day before, I could have made a trip to the post office and purchased a goodly supply of Forever stamps and saved a bit of change.

(Twenty stamps would have been a dollar cheaper on Saturday than they were two days later. Do the math and you’ll figure out that 100 stamps would have been five dollars less expensive. I could have saved that five dollars by buying stamps on Saturday and spent it on a fancypants coffee drink with almond milk and flavoring and whipped cream and drizzles of caramel on top.)

Why did they wait until after the fact to notify us? (It’s really ok. I prefer my coffee made at home, black, anyway. But a donut or two with it is always nice. A high school friend used to call me “Donut hole” instead of “Donohoe,” and that should tell you something about my affinity for donuts. I would have liked to buy a couple with the savings from a Saturday-instead-of-Monday stamp purchase.)

In 1885 the cost of a pre-paid first class stamp was two cents (prior to that mail was delivered postage due). Forty-seven years later, in 1932, the price of a first class stamp increased to three cents and then to four cents in 1958. Think of it: for 47 years the cost to post a letter never changed. Since then the rate has gone up three or four cents every three or four years.

A first class postage stamp is up to 55 cents now. If you read my column regularly you know I’m a tad frugal, so you are anticipating that about now I will begin my whimpering and sniveling about the rate increase. But not this time. Today I am absolutely thrilled that I can send a letter across the country in mere days for a couple of quarters and a nickel. It’s a blue light special! A door bustin’ bargain!

Snail mail? Hardly. I recently posted a package at a flat rate—no special delivery upcharge—to Sacramento on Friday

and it arrived there two days later, on Sunday. Yes, delivered on Sunday. I could have tracked it online (but it arrived before I had time to) and the package was insured by the USPS. The speed at which this package crossed the continent and arrived on my sister’s doorstep seems impossible, all for just a few bucks. In an emergency, I could have paid to have the package delivered the very next day, guaranteed.

How do they do that?

No wonder the post office is going under. (That, and the fact that they could produce their stamps to be the size of the original three-center and not the size of a welcome mat. And they could go back to lick-and-stick instead of peel-andstick stamps which use twice as much paper. And how about a little customer service, like staffing another window when there is a line out the door instead of popping in, asking, “Does anyone have anything to pick up? ” and then disappearing again into the back room.)

Over the years our mail has been delivered through rain and hail and sleet and snow on horseback, steamboats, railroads, automobiles, airplanes, a guided missile (It’s true. Shot from a Navy submarine in 1959), rockets (these attempts crash-landed before they reached their destination), and pneumatic tube (New York City, 1887). Today it is picked up from homes and mail boxes all over town, then machine sorted, flown across the skies, further sorted and then delivered by truck to not just your city or town, not to the general vicinity of your ZIP code, but to your individual, personal, private mailbox—in mere days.

You can change your address, put a hold on delivery while you’re on vacation, have it delivered upon your return, and get delivery confirmation (or you could simply call the recipient and ask.

That works too), all without a fee. In addition, you can intercept a package middelivery. (Imagine the stories that caused the USPS to offer this service!) You can mail eggs (packed properly, of course), live day-old poultry (but pheasants can only go April through August), live bees, live scorpions, and most importantly, you can mail Fido!

Now that’s something to write home about.

Men and women came in uniform to celebrate the theme, Night on the Home Front.

Others wore dresses and clothes reminiscent of the 1940s. A lot of fabulous “up do’s,” victory twists, and hot rolled hair from the ladies in town! There was a pervasive We Can Do It attitude that influenced the Night’s generous giving.

Estes Park Nonprofit Resource Center’s annual fundraiser was last Saturday night at the American Legion Post 119.

The evening comprised of a silent auction, live auctioneer, musical trio on stage, professional swing dancers, and a live band to finish out the evening. The event raised over $25,000, which will go to help sustain EPNRC and grow its services and programs to all area nonprofits. Each year, the organization does a themed fundraiser with a theme or “of an era” that inspires costumes, party favors, specialty drinks and more. A huge

thank you to the generous community of Estes Park for giving throughout the year to all nonprofits. Look for next year’s “Night of…” party!

Town Board And County Commissioners To Discuss Land Use Planning And Stormwater Utility February 19 The Estes Park Town Board and Larimer County Board of Commissioners will hold a joint study session Feb. 19 at 6:30 p.m. in the Town Board Room of Town Hall, 170 MacGregor Ave. The boards will discuss the future of coordinated land use planning and a potential stormwater utility in the Estes Valley.

The public is encouraged to observe the meeting, although public comment is not included on study session agendas.

Comments on the topic may be submitted to the Town Clerk at Town Hall (Room 130) or by emailing townclerk@estes.org. Meeting materials will be posted by 5 p.m. Feb. 15 at www.estes.org/boardsandmeetings, and the study session will be streamed live and recorded for viewing later at www.estes.org/videos.

A potential Stormwater Management Program could help reduce future flood damages and, in some areas, reduce the number of properties located within floodplain boundaries, reducing the cost of insurance for private property owners.

The projects could be managed by a new utility, and funded in part by fees as-

sessed on properties within the Estes Valley. The boards will discuss the status of the project, staff recommendations on fee structures, and the next steps in gathering public feedback.

Staff will also present options for the future of the formal land use planning agreement between the two entities, which defines how regulations and authority are shared. Land use planning and related development approval processes in the Estes Valley have been managed with a joint model since 2000, when a shared comprehensive plan and development code were developed to help consistently address growth-related issues within Town limits and in the unincorporated Estes Valley. With the intergovernmental agreement for land use planning between the Town of Estes Park and Larimer County set to expire in February of 2020, the Feb. 19 meeting will allow the elected officials to discuss the need and effectiveness of the current model versus a traditional model with planning and processing of development applications handled by each entity.

Democrats In Estes Valley Meeting February 4 To Host Senate Candidate

The Estes Valley Democrats will meet on Monday, February 4, from 5:45 to 7:30 p.m. at the Library’s Hondius Room. (Please note the slight change in meeting times based on anticipated arrival of our guest candidate.)

On January 19, Trish announced her formal candidacy to run in the 2020 election for the U. S. Senate seat held by Senator Cory Gardner. Trish visited Estes Park in September 2017 as she began exploring the possibility of running for that political office. Since then, she has toured 63 of Colorado’s 64 counties,

meeting with local residents and listening to their concerns.

Now Trish returns to Estes Park as a formal candidate to discuss what she has learned during her tour of Colorado and about policies and positions she will be offering Colorado voters in 2020.

Trish is 33 and lives in Superior. She is an educator, currently teaching at the University of Colorado Denver. She has a background in biomedicine and has worked as a researcher at the University of Colorado Boulder, Denver Health Hospital, and the Stanford University School of Medicine in California.

This background provides Trish with an excellent understanding of policies regarding health care, the environment, and education. She has also immersed herself in the areas of law, economics, foreign policy, and campaign finance in preparation for her run for the U. S. Senate.

Estes Valley Sunrise Rotary Grant Applications Now Available

The Estes Valley Sunrise Rotary (EVSR) is now accepting applications for the 2019 Community Grants Programs. The EVSR invites proposals from charitable and other tax-exempt organizations in the Estes Valley for grants to support programs and projects to benefit the Estes Valley community. The deadline for receipt of the completed applications is March 31, 2019. Awards will be announced in late April.

HOW’S YOUR ‘JIGGLER’ WORKING FOR YOU? Recently I saw a beautiful rose-colored car driving into a drive-through in town. I was reminded of a wild ride I once took in a Phoenix funeral procession. The owner of the mortuary was named ‘Rose’, which explained the color chosen for all his vehicles. We were driving down Van Buren Avenue on the way to the cemetery. I was riding with Mr. Rose, a man known to be a ‘perfectionist’ and, as a result, very high-strung. Unfortunately, on Van Buren, there are two cemeteries. As we came to the first, the lead driver drove in. All the cars followed. He shortly realized that it was the wrong cemetery, and made a big circle, finally emerging out on Van Buren to go to the right cemetery. All the cars followed. During that ‘side-trip’ I watched as Mr. Rose’s face turned beet-red, even ‘rose’-colored, the veins in his neck looking like they were going to burst, as he seethed. His ‘jiggler’ wasn’t working! I was afraid he was going to have a heart attack and leave our car ‘driverless’. He survived, but I’m sure that the lead driver’s job didn’t.

The emotion is called ‘stress’ and all people have to deal with it. Many, like my driver, hardly survive. Someone has well described our times in this poetic verse: “This is the age of the half-read page; The quick hash and the mad dash; The bright night with the nerves tight; The plane hop with the brief stop; The lamp tan In a short span; The big shot in a good spot; The brain strain and the heart pain; The catnaps until the spring snaps; And the fun’s done.”

Perhaps you watched your mother ‘can’ vegetables. You know that they use a ‘pressure canner’ to accomplish this task. During the process, steam builds up and a ‘jiggler’, sometimes called simply a ‘weight’, is needed to let the steam escape, to keep the canner from exploding. In a similar way, every person needs a ‘jiggler’. In our ‘high-stress’ society, people wrestle with high blood pressure, massive heart attacks, strokes, ulcers, and other stress-caused, often fatal, health problems…‘the fun’s done!’

While recognizing those problems, it is common knowledge that we need a certain level of ‘stress’ in order to be at our best. Consider a rubber band. It requires a certain amount of tension or it hangs limply and can’t hold items securely. We see many in our society like that…little purpose, little initiative to succeed, ambling through life. However, a band stretched too far, experiencing ‘distress’, will break. It’s the same with people! We all need our ‘jiggler’ to let the pressure escape in a gradual manner, before we explode.

So, what can we do to lessen the stress and survive life’s daily grinds better? Here is advice professionals give us: Set realistic goals and expectations for ourselves; take time for ourselves…exercise, meditation, letting off ‘steam’ by talking to a trusted friend or counselor; being realistic about our finances, our time, our energy, about what we can and cannot do. Learn to say: ‘No!’ I had a graduate professor at the University of Nebraska that had a nervous breakdown. He was ‘out-of-pocket’ for over a semester. When he returned, the ‘note-to-self’ by his office phone read simply: “I’m sorry, I can’t!” And he stuck by it, so he could heal. We must learn to do the same.

Perhaps being aware of these will help us to have much happier days. (Bob)

Woman’s Club Donates To Circuit Breakers Robotics Team

The Estes Park Woman’s Club was pleased to help the Circuit Breakers Robotics Team by providing financial support to help offset the cost of the team going to the 2019 Robotics State and National Championships. This robotics team is made up of three very bright middle schoolers, Blake Marcantonio, Decker Nicholson and Luke Walker, who on their own have built, coded and

programmed a robot that won the VEX IQ Challenge in Frederick, Colorado.

This victory qualified the boys for the state meet along with the U.S. Robotics Championship in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

This educational donation will help them towards their entrance fees, hardware and software expenses. Our Club was pleased to acknowledge their creativity, hard work and past success.

Estes Park Health Creates An Amazing Opportunity For Students about patient recovery and a little bit about what nurses do to help patients recover. Our students learned about safety for patients, ways to help patients move, and ways that medications are thoroughly checked with a scanner system that helps to not only log medications a patient is given, but also ensure that they are going to the right patient. After recovery students were able to find out a little bit about physical therapy. All of the students were able to try some of the exercises patients would do to help them recover from surgery.

On January 25th the Sports Medicine class was given an incredible opportunity to learn from numerous medical professionals from Estes Park Health.

For the sixth year, the hospital has taken time to organize and prepare a simulation for our class to get an incredible hands-on experience. The day started in the gym at Estes Park High School, where two students collided in the gym and both had injuries that needed to be treated and assessed. The students worked alongside Dr. Florence and numerous members of the Emergency Services to help stabilize and transport our “patients.� Once patients were ready to be moved the students traveled in the ambulance to the emergency room at Estes Park Health.

In the emergency room students were able to see different ways patients are taken care of including things like ultrasound and heart monitors. The group of students were also given a lesson on imaging to identify broken bones and head trauma from Dr. Chew and Dr. Florence.

Students then transported one of our pa-

tients to imaging. Students were given a tour of the imaging department and were able to see how the CT scanner, MRI, and x-ray machines are used. Students then got the unique experience of getting dressed for the operating room. While in the operating room students were able to gain a better understanding of how important it is to have a sterile environment. They also learned about what a surgical assistant does and they were able to see and handle many of the tools and hardware needed for surgery.

Students were divided up into four different groups and spent about 15 minutes visiting with professionals from Emergency Medical Services, Nursing, Occupational and Physical Therapy, and Physicians.

We are so fortunate to have this opportunity for our students. It speaks volumes to the investment Estes Park Health and all of its employees have in helping our stu-

dents see so many options in the medical field that they may want to pursue in their future. Often times students are interested in what they know or things they have experienced. This experience is unlike any other. By putting students in a simulation it allows them an incredible view into the numerous pathways of medicine. The Sports Medicine class has 14 students. In order to be in the class students have to take Anatomy and Physiology and also apply for one of the fourteen spots available. Throughout the semester we have multiple professionals that come in and teach our students. The simulation is always immediately after our students get their CPR/AED First

Aid certification that is taught by Janet Bielmaier. We want to thank Estes Park Health for continuing to support our students with this amazing opportunity.

It is truly an advantage we have to be living in such a caring community with so many amazing medical professionals that are willing to donate their time to show students what they do and how they help people.

Local Artist Michael Young Never Really Considered Himself A True Artist Until Moving To Estes Park myself to her, and told her I'd like to go over her requirements for the set. The first thing out of her mouth was, "What part would you like to play?" I told her I'm here to design her sets. She said, "I know.

What part would you like?"

"So my very first time ever on stage was playing "Dwight Babcock,"

founding director, Art Blume, his sequels were produced - "Final Curtain," "Hidden Evil," and the recently presented "The Ladies Wore Black," with Don Stewart reprising his character each time.

Young's confidence grew enough to write his first modern day play, "A Diner On The Way," which ended up being the company's most successful production up to that point. An unexpected bonus came with the "Diner" production. On the day of it's last performance, a literary agent was in the audience, and signed

and I felt a creative rush I had never felt before. I was hooked.

Dozens of plays followed, with an equal amount of set designs and construction.

However, two plays that eventually opened the world of script writing for me came from my very dear friend, Kurtis Kelly. I was blessed to appear in his plays, and was mesmerized by the fact that here is a man I actually know, and he has created whole new worlds and characters and he does it extremely well! He motivated me to try my hand at script writing as well. I tried, but I discovered that my writing style came out like it was taken from a 1930s or 1940s black and white movie.

So I assumed that this meant I was incapable of writing a decent script."

It wasn't until much later that Michael had the idea that perhaps he should set his plays in the '30s, and '40s! This revelation prompted him to write his first play, "Premier To Murder" in 2007, using one of his favorite genres, the detective murder mystery.

Michael continues. "Again, the Fine Arts Guild of the Rockies came to my rescue, and with the support of my dear friend, Julie Phares, "Premier To Murder" was produced, and with this play, came an actor who became the cornerstone of my script writing career. Don Stewart portrayed my detective, Steven Best, and did such an incredible job, logic dictated that I must use him again!"

By now, Michael had joined the newly formed Estes Park Repertoire Theatre Company, and under the leadership of

Michael on as a client. A theatre company in Washington state will be performing "A Diner On The Way" this coming July. "I still can't believe that a play of mine will be performed by another theatre company."

And now, Michael is thrilled to announce that two more of his plays are in production for the EPRTC's 2019 season: The first is "Backstage," which depicts in a most humorous and poignant way what transpires behind the scenes when a small town theatre company puts on a play. The most interesting fact of this play is that Young wrote it in only two weeks!

"We try to do three plays each season, and Christann Higley, our current and magnificently devoted director, just couldn't find a play suitable for our second production. We were running out of time, so as a personal challenge to see if I could write one in two weeks, I wrote "Backstage." It came out faster than I could type! I asked as many of my theatre friends as I could to share their stories, their emotions - anything that applied to theatre. So technically, this play was written by dozens and dozens of actors! Speaking of which, in "Backstage,"

It was Estes Park which gave him the countless opportunities to discover just what he was capable of doing creatively.

Opportunities to paint mural after mural continuously kept coming down the road. Most still exist, but sometimes in the world of mural creation, they get painted over, like a threestory winter scene on the side of The Simply Christmas building, or a ten foot square reproduction of the Beatles Sgt. Pepper album cover and sadly, his most prolific work was in the now gutted Chicago's Best restaurant and the nightclubs, Kelli's and Hollywoods upstairs, with over 140 musicians painted in black and white.

Fortunately, the murals and artwork that have survived are located at Bob & Tony's restaurant, the Children's Library in the Estes Valley Library, the ceiling and walls of Mocha Angelos coffee house, the "Storytime Under the Stars" diorama in the Estes Park museum, the Christian Church of Estes Park, the electrical junction box behind Mama Rose's Restaurant, and the recreated "Brody's Market" sign in Poppy’s Pizza and Grill Restaurant. The opportunity to paint his largest existing mural came from an incredible source he never would have expected... the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden, Colorado. This diorama background, painted for one of their large train exhibits, measures five feet by forty feet.

Michael's entrance into theater came in a most unsuspected way. First, he was asked to paint the sets for the Estes Park High School's musicals "Brigadoon" and "Anything Goes" in the early 1990s.

Then Tim Phillips, an accomplished set designer and builder in his own right, asked Michael if he'd like to design and paint the sets for the Fine Arts Guild of the Rockies production of "Mame."

"I was scared more than excited," says Michael. "I showed up before one of the rehearsals to discuss the set design with the director, the legendary icon of Estes Park theater, Melody Paige. I introduced

the very talented Cassie Weber has the dubious honor of being the 50th character I've created!"

Michael adds, "We feel we put on the best plays possible, in the most entertaining way possible with our very limited resources, and especially with our very little funding."

"Backstage" will open February 8th, and will run February 8, 9, 10, 15, 16, 17, at the American Legion post #119 Studio Theater.

In addition to Michael, cast members of “Backstage” include Cassie Weber, CJ Jensen and Christann Higley. These four are having a blast getting this play ready for their debut.

Following "Backstage" will be perhaps Michael's quirkiest play, "One Big Happy Neighborhood," which depicts, well.... you better just come see it and find out!

"One Big Happy Neighborhood" will premier Friday, April 5, and run April 6, 7, 12, 13, and 14, also at the American Legion.

In addition to his work in local theatre and creating art, Young's greatest pride was being involved for ten years with the annual "Catch The Glow" Parade, the last eight years of which he was the director and proud father of over forty

Christmas floats.

Michael concludes, "And for all of this, I dedicate my successes to my mother, Lenamae Young, who sadly did not live long enough to see my journey into script writing or parade building, and to my father, Ray C. Young, a most talented, admired and loved musician who gifted his talents for over forty years to the town of Estes Park, and who sadly passed away in September of 2018.

"Backstage" will be the only play of mine he will not see in person, but I know for certain, he will be there in spirit. My playwriting style has grown and changed each time I grew and changed. When my dad died, a brand new element of my emotions has surfaced, and is represented in these two new plays."

"I owe my deepest gratitude to Estes Park, for blessing me with the world of theatre, in addition to so many other gifts. This wonderful town has given me most of my dearest and most cherished friends. The Estes Park Repertoire Theatre Company hopes to continue to present the best productions we possibly can to our cherished audiences. We thank you all for supporting local theatre."

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Estes Park Branch President Aaron Florence and his counselor Cory Workman donating to the Crossroads Ministry.

Estes Park is a generous community year-round, and that spirit of giving was especially evident during the holidays. In December the historic Park Theater held two showings of the movie “Silent Night� to nearly sold-out crowds. Admission was only the price of a canned goods donation to support Crossroads Ministry. In total, $161 in cash and 255 pounds of canned goods valued at $266 were donated to support the work Crossroads does to help those in need in our community.

2018 was the second year Estes Park had the opportunity to view “Silent Night.� In 2017 it had its first theatrical showing in the United States at the Park Theater. For those who attended, it has become a wonderful Christmas tradition

to bring the spirit of giving to Estes Park during the holidays. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which underwrote the cost of bringing the movie to Estes Park, wishes to thank all those who supported the event and for their generous donations of cash and canned goods to the Crossroads Ministry.

This last Christmas marked the 200year anniversary of the first singing of the song Silent Night in December 1818 with words by Joseph Mohr, a priest, and music by Franz Xaver Gruber, in Oberndorf, Austria. The movie tells the story of these two men and how the most well-known Christmas carol of all time came to be.

CBD....What’s All The Hype?

Here is news you can use…or not!

This year marks my 40 years as a registered nurse. I’ve seen so many changes over the years as you can imagine. One of my favorites (sadly) is that in my freshman year, our nursing book cited PMS as a psychological disorder!

This also marks my 22 years of being an herbalist. It’s been an amazing journey into the healing plant world, far different from what I was taught in nursing school! Empowering, enlightening, and in many ways, magical.

Once again, the changes I’ve experi-

enced in herbal medicine have been phenomenal. For example, when I was in school in 1995, Stevia leaf was not even allowed in health food stores.

When it was finally “admitted” into the “grocery” world, it was only as a nutritional supplement, not as a sweetener.

Now, it is everywhere and most everyone is aware of it as an alternative noncaloric natural sweetener.

Also, with globalization and current Internet access to research, we are learning almost daily about new amazing herbal remedies. Multilevel marketing companies have been creating opportunities for lay people to learn about herbs and market/sell/educate for others to find healing in other ways than the current medical paradigm. The demand for knowledge of other ways to find healing has become unprecedented!

And now, there’s a newcomer on the block…well, actually a resurgence of an ancient remedy that became illegal over 80 years ago in this country.

Hemp.

Hemp is one of the oldest domesticated crops known to man. It has been used for paper, textiles, and cordage for thousands of years. In fact, the Columbia

History of the World states that the oldest relic of human industry is a scrap of hemp fabric dating back to approximately 8,000 BC. There is much information about all the uses of hemp. For now, the focus of this presentation will be CBD. Here is information you need to know: Marijuana & Hemp are both cannabis THC & CBD are cannabinoids THC is tetrahydrocannabinol CBD is cannabidiol Marijuana contains over 0.3% THC Hemp contains less than 0.3% THC CBD is extracted from Hemp (specific species for nutritional/medicinal use versus the species for textiles and other raw materials) How can CBD help you? There is much research that needs to be done to validate some of the amazing anecdotal information presented here. However, since it is “legal” and has been helping so many people, why wait until two or three years to try it?

Recently, the FDA has approved a CBD extract that has been formulated pharmacologically, and is being sold as “Epiolex” for use in extreme pediatric seizure

disorders.

So, what has CBD been shown some effectiveness for?

ADHD, Alzheimer’s Disease, Anxiety, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Cancer, Depression, Eating Disorders, Epilepsy, Fertility, Fibromyalgia, Gut Issues, Inflammation, Insomnia, Menopause, Migraines, Multiple Sclerosis, Osteoporosis, Pain, PTSD, Skin Disorders, Stress, Weight Management An important reminder, that this list has been created from anecdotal evidence. There are incidences from reliable sources, that autistic children have lost some or most of their autistic traits.

Recent use of CBD oil from people I know, have found pain relief, and sleeping better.

Here are some guidelines for use of CBD oil.

Please note that if you are on a pharmacological anti-anxiety, anti-depressant, mood support, I would not recommend going off of them and trying CBD oil.

You must consult with your physician.

And CBD oil would only be appropriate for mild and maybe some moderate mood disorders.

Route administration and proper dosing are of utmost importance for CBD oil to work. Sublingual is the easiest and most bioavailable way to take CBD oil.

This means that drops go under the tongue and allowed to absorb for a minute or so.

Dosing is very individual and with my clients, I can use muscle testing (kinesiology) or a pendulum to find the right dose. However, every day our biological/biochemical needs can change, so it is a worthy investment to find a tool to learn to dose yourself. Invest in a good pendulum and learn how to use it to determine the number of drops and times per day. You can also muscle test yourself. Thanks to YouTube, both options are clearly shown how to do.

CBD oil. To use…or not to use? That is a good question and one you can explore. A good healthcare practitioner with knowledge of CBD will be helpful.

And make sure you use a high quality product! There are many different ones coming on the market almost every day!

These are exciting times, bringing back an ancient remedy into our country and our world. A beautiful way to start healing naturally!

Dr. Ulyana Horodyskyj presents “Science and Summits” Ulyana takes the audience on a journey to high altitudes, in the Himalaya of Nepal, and high latitudes, on Baffin Island in the Canadian Arctic, exploring how these fragile environments are being impacted by a changing climate. In the Himalaya, glaciers are quickly melting, creating lakes on their surfaces and increasing flood risks to villagers living down-valley. In the high altitudes and latitudes, snow and ice on glaciers can collect contaminants like black carbon (pollution from cars and factories), causing them to melt faster. Ulyana will speak about how she has blended her passions – science and climbing – into a career as a scientist, educator and mountaineer, while showing photographs from her research expeditions and

telling stories of life in the field as a climbing scientist.

Dr. Horodyskyj is the founder and owner of Science in the Wild, an adventure citizen science company that leads immersive and educational expeditions around the world. She is also a visiting assistant professor at Colorado College, teaching courses on climate and the environment. By the time she turned 23, she had traveled to and worked on all the continents.

Cooking Classes At Seasoned-An American Bistro

Gary and I and our friends, Ward and Pat Nelson and Thom Widawski recently took Chef/Owner Rob Corey’s cooking classes at Seasoned-An American Bistro. We decided to take the class so some of us could learn the basics of cooking and/or hone the skills we already have.

After introductions, we started out Fresh vegetables ready for cutting and roasting in the dining room with Chef Rob who explained what the day would entail and we went over the menu and how we’d be preparing the food.

Afterwards, we donned our aprons and headed for the kitchen. Chef Rob showed us the layout of the kitchen and where our ingredients were, and we jumped right in and began to prepare our special meal.

Each of us were assigned various tasks which we happily performed.

The atmosphere in the kitchen was fun and relaxed, and Rob was willing to answer any questions we posed.

Soon we were busy grating, chopping, measuring, grating, peeling, grating, etc. (shout out to Ward).

Chef Corey moved around the kitchen, teaching us helpful lessons and tips on how to prepare our meal. We learned tools and supplies needed for cooking, knife skills and sharpening, basic skills for better cooking, pan frying and sauteeing, Everyone learned all aspects of food prep. boiling, simmering, baking and seeds, chive oil and croutons roasting. We learned methods for combinWhole roasted and carved chicken, preing ingredients, how to make special pared with apricots, prunes, sage and pan dishes, sauces and other foods from juices Potato puree Roasted root vegetables A Seasoned winter salad with grilled radicchio, arugula, grapefruit, pear, candied walnuts, goat cheese and a vinaigrette Chocolate cake, and toasted cocoa ice cream (yes, we even made cake and ice cream from scratch!)

Every course was met with “ooohs” and “ahhhs” and all of the guests loved the flavors of each dish. Our guests were impressed with what we learned and we ended our meals with satisfied appetites as well as some fun, new friendships.

We left the restaurant with a souvenir of scratch. It was very interesting and fun! culinary knowledge and new and renewed Chef Rob is an experienced chef and instructor and on this day, he enhanced our cooking abilities and lead us on a real culinary journey. We learned many new things which we will all keep with us.

After four hours of preparing and cooking, it was time for a short break to get ready for dinner. We had invited several guests to dine with us and got the table prepared for them. We sat down and as each dish was brought out, we explained to our guests how each dish was prepared and what we had learned.

Once per month, Seasoned will be hosting a cooking class followed by dinner with Chef Rob Corey. Cost for the class is $75.00 and it is limited to four participants in the kitchen. If you’ve ever stubbed your toe you’ll probably remember that you breathed in sharply and held your breath. This contracted breath comes from the shock and surprise of unexpected pain.

Our emotions operate the same way.

When we receive challenging news, we tend to hold our breath. This is a natural response as we are trying to protect ourselves from feelings that hurt.

The contracted breath keeps us from filling our lungs with oxygen and circulating our energy. When the body is shortchanged on healthy amounts of oxygen it responds with what is known

as the fight or flight reaction. This reaction puts our adrenals on high alert and produces stress in our bodies.

Less oxygen results in stress, anxiety, poor circulation, pain and tension in the body, poor organ function and a very busy mind. This stress makes us more

vulnerable to becoming sick, angry and impatient.

The cycle of stress is reinforced as pressures in life build. The next time you’re dealing with deadlines and demands at work or at home, check your breathing. Are you full bodied breathing down to your lower abdomen or inhaling only into your chest?

mitters opinion or subject matter.

We try to print everything as space allows. We welcome opinions from all perspectives because it provides the opportunity for each of us to learn and develop our own opinion on any important issue.

A Time For Action To The Editor: A group of homeowners formally presented the town with a petition during the last Planning Commission meeting requesting a public forum to discuss the numerous proposed changes to our land use code. That request has seemingly fallen upon deaf ears as the Community Development Department is moving forward with crafting the language for those changes.

If you are not aware, over the course of the last 2-3 years, there has been a concentrated effort by a small group, with the town’s support, to significantly change the Estes Valley Development Code, our land use code. This effort has been publicized as an effort to provide much needed affordable, year-round family housing for our workforce, teachers, police, and nurses. In addition, to develop a stable year-round economy that would provide above-minimumwage, full time jobs.

Have you noticed that the pretense has since been dropped? The current claims are to develop either “workforce” or “attainable” housing. References to affordability and family have been dropped.

The same is true of developing a yearround, high wage, sustainable economy.

Reference to that legitimate goal has disappeared.

The rapid changes to the development code seem primarily focused on supporting growth of our tourist-based economy by removing the protections intended to keep residential areas from overly dense development, commercial and business uses. Significant changes have already occurred, and the proposed additional changes can easily be characterized as continuing to destroy our residential zoning regulations and the protection they have provided to homeowners.

Do you know the names Grand Estes Estates, Raven Rock, Twin Owls, and

Wind River? Do you know of the commercial use that has been approved for the Stanley home and the mountain coaster on the Sombrero property? Both properties are zoned as residential. If you don’t, you should because they all are linked by a common set of circumstances. All are examples of recent changes to, or violations of our residential zoning regulations (new and proposed), or irregularities of due process committed by various factions of our local government. All have suffered from incorrect interpretations of the code, ignorance of the code, or deviations from formal public process.

It is difficult to fault the efforts of a community working for a robust economy and adequate housing for all residents, seasonal and full time, but how we work toward those goal’s matters.

The efforts of just a few who benefit personally or financially should not be mistaken for, or disguised as, “community” efforts.

In a town of only 6,000 people, all of us neighbors, we need to do better than this. We need to expect better behavior from our local government. We need to demand integrity, ethical conduct, and responsiveness to all members of the community by all governmental employees, appointed, and elected office holders.

Please let your opinion be known to our local governing bodies. Please demand better. Email or call each of our town trustees, planning commissioners and the Community Development Director. Stanley E. Franklin September 9, 1930 - January 19, 2019 Beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, teacher and friend, Stan Franklin, 88, of San Pedro CA, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family on January 19, 2019. Born in San Francisco, raised in Gardena, he graduated from UCLA - making him a proud Bruin. Stan was in the Air Force Reserves, and he taught science at San Pedro High School for 35 years. He also spent his summers working as a Naturalist in Rocky Mountain National Park for over 30 years. He and his wife Deanna, who he adored, had

many adventures camping and traveling with their family and friends all over North America, Scandinavia and the Salton Sea. Preceeded in death by his mother Veryl and son Jefferey, Stan is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Deanna, sons Russ (Trudy) and Steven (Valerie), eight grandchildren, and 1.33 great grandchildren. He was loved and respected by all and will be greatly missed. Services are pending in Colorado.

Together We Are Better & Stronger Dear Estes Park Readers, I have a business here in town. I love living in this wonderful town in Colorado. I have noticed something that I wanted to bring up.

I want to write a letter about how this being a rather small community where people have conflicting beliefs and how vicious opinions can be put out there in many platforms can be hurtful and harm our community as a whole. I have heard very conservative people state their opinions and liberal people do the same and how they disagree and often times dislike and say awful things about one another.

My point in writing this is to say - the exchanges of opinions are vital – and reasonable contributions from all competing points of view are essential. But we as adults I urge us to be chivalrous and considerate. Even if we are bitter/sour feel overlooked we need to realize that these are our neighbors we are speaking about, in this rather small community. In my opinion the most important thing in dialogue is honestly trying to understand why the other person takes a particular position.

Here in Estes Park I have observed the many different people that serve, Cody

Walker is one of them. Cody and I disagree about most political views in this country, even so, he has not treated me any differently then someone whom agrees with him. I appreciate this very much. I am sad at how he was treated over the coaster issue. I have observed that Cody has served this community for years and has helped us a lot! More than I have! My point in writing this is to say - the exchanges of opinions are vital – and reasonable contributions from all competing points of view are essential.

We all have small ideas with huge potential; let’s work together to create a community that is vibrant, inclusive and safe. Together we are stronger, and together we are more successful. Let’s try in 2019 to be kind and considerate of each other and to remember words can heal or hurt. So let’s be our best selves and lead and serve this place we call home and try when we are upset or disagree to be kind to the other person think before we react and have each other’s backs. William F. Kalbac William F. Kalbac 92, of Lowell, and Estes Park, CO passed away Saturday, January 26, 2019. Known as “Mr. K,” his career was that of Industrial Arts teacher at Lowell Senior High School, 1962-1991. Known as “Bill” he was regarded as a professional summer camp counselor with more than 50 seasons of dedication.

His life was filled with teaching, coaching and mentoring of youth and young adults. He remained active through his full life. He was a WWII Army veteran with occupation duties in Japan.
