Permits will need to be picked up at the park’s Wilderness Offices to activate the reservation. Wilderness camping permits help provide a quality experience, minimize impacts to resources, and ensure that sites are available for those who plan ahead and reserve a permit in advance.

An overnight permit is required for backcountry camping year-round, and from May through October demand can exceed availability in certain areas of the park’s backcountry. Staff and volunteers in the park’s wilderness office provide trip planning advice and information for a safe and enjoyable trip into the wilderness. Requirements for food storage necessary to protect bears and other wildlife, mountain weather, hazards, and Leave No Trace ethics are among the information received during the permitting process.

Helping Those In Need After The Marshall Fire

Last Thursday evening, several members of American Legion Post 119 delivered personal care items (almost twenty bins valued at more than $1,000) and two checks totaling just under $11,500 to those affected by the Marshall Fire. Pic-

tured are Laurie Button, Auxiliary member, Legion Auxiliary Unit 119 President Ingra Marske, Louisville’s American Legion Post 111 Commander Tina Schaffer, and Post 119’s Veteran Service Officer Terry Rizzuti.

The charge(s) are merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

On January 17 at 8:53 p.m. police contacted a 41 year old male from Estes Park in the 400 block of E. Wonderview Ave. The male was arrested and transported to the Larimer County Jail and charged with unlawful sexual contact / no consent & harassment in a public place.

On January 19 at 2:18 p.m. police contacted a 19 year old female from Illinois

in the 700 block of Elm Road. She was arrested, warrant signed and entered into CCIC/NCIC for harassment by phone or computer.

On January 12 at 6:07 p.m. police contacted a 31 year old male from Boulder, CO in the 900 block of Big Thompson Ave. His arrest warrant was signed and entered into CCIC/NCIC for harassment by phone or computer & domestic violence.

EVFPD firefighters generally respond to medical calls in their personal vehicles, allowing for a faster response. On other incidents, firefighters respond to a fire station to respond in department apparatus with specialized equipment.

You know what I mean?

Aaargh! All those words, those empty, wasted words. Often when I listen to a radio interview in my car, I grit my teeth and purse my lips to keep from counting aloud those “crutch words,” holding up my fingers like a baseball umpire to track each filler as I learned to do in Toastmasters. (In Toastmasters, an organization designed to help people improve their public speaking skills, the “Ah Counter” counts every ah and um a speaker says when making a speech and reports the total at the end of the meeting. It’s amazing how quickly we learn to eliminate those stumbling words when we know someone’s counting them.)

My interview-editing is a curse that has been cast on me by the airwave fairies. Their spell makes it so that I cannot listen to an on-air interview without counting crutch words. These same fairies tease us sometimes by stretching ouuuuut our wooooords on Zoom so we sound like Lurch from The Addams Family. “Yoooouuu raaaang?”

As a grammar devotee, I edit everything I read, from the instructions on a box of Cream of Wheat (why do they make that type so tiny?) to the colorful ads in glossy art magazines. In fact, I

often find my own errors—after my column has gone to press, wouldn’t you know. (Speaking of errors, texting is the worst for typos. It’s the autocorrect effect. Autocorrect: can’t text with it; can’t text without it.)

As with the written word, when I listen to an interview on the radio, I find myself mentally red-lining what people say.

(To put your mind at rest, I do not have this problem when I am engaged in conversation. Only when I listen to interviews on the radio.)

Rarely does an interviewee answer a question without starting with a crutch word or phrase.

“So…” is quite common, as is, “I mean…” and these days, “Yeah, ” which is short for, “Yeah-no.” It must be a glitch in the human design that we don’t simply start a sentence at the beginning, with no precursor. If you haven’t noticed it yet, now you will. You can thank me later for bringing it to your attention.

But wait. There’s more. Who knew there would be trends in radio interviews? There are. Recently, the pre-answer compliment has come into favor.

After the interviewer poses a question, the guest begins each of his answers with, “That’s a good question,” or, “Thank you for asking that question.”

“That’s a good question,”

Of course it’s a good question—that’s what an interviewer does!

She asks questions. Good ones. She doesn’t need to be thanked for asking them. That’s her job! The guest’s job is to answer them.

“Just answer her question! ” I say to my radio—sometimes with my outside voice.

You want to know my other interview pet peeves, I can tell. Here are two: 1) “To make a long story short…”

Whenever someone claims they’re going to shorten their story, you know you’re in it for the long haul. What they mean is, “To make a long story longer.”

2) The word, “perfect. ” I hear this more from people in the service industry than on the air. When I ordered my meal at a restaurant recently, the server wrote on her little notepad and replied, “Perfect. ” After she’d taken the other orders I added, “I didn’t get a knife.

May I have one?” she smiled, nodded and said, “Perfect.”

The world has been a stressful place lately. People are trying to be positive (except with COVID, when we want to be negative), but positive is good enough. Perfect should be reserved for editing.

350 degree oven, bake 30-40 minutes serves 10 (1/2 cup serving) 20 oz. can pineapple tidbits, drained. (reserve ¼ cup) 20 oz. can crushed pineapple, drained 6 Tbs. flour 1/2 cup sugar (I would take out 1 Tbs.) 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese 40 Ritz cracker, crushed 1/2 cup melted butter Combine all but Ritz crackers in a large bowl. Por into a 1 ½ qt. greased casserole dish. In small bowl mix the crushed crackers with the melted butter.

Sprinkle crackers over top of pineapple mixture. and bake 30-40 minutes until it is a golden brown. Serve warm.

I say that because I have had the two Moderna shots and a follow up booster and I am now recovering from Covid. I contracted it in Texas. My grandson and his son tested positive shortly before I left. I am alive and well with only residual after-effects. Those are called “long Covid” according to doctors. I am no longer shedding… the virus, not hair.

While in Houston I began sneezing repeatedly and had a runny nose. Went on Wednesday and got a Covid test that came back negative. I flew home Thursday and decided to get tested again here in Estes. That Friday, I tested positive. All I had was that darn uncontrollable runny nose and sneezing with a slight sore throat. If I had fever, it was so low grade, I never knew it. I was fatigued. I am telling y’all this so you know that the symptoms can be so mild one does not know they have Covid.

Feeling better, I decided to try a new recipe that I found on the internet: Mongolian Beef. Big mistake! I cannot understand how someone can post a recipe and get complimentary reviews when the finished product is so awful! I will not be deterred. I am going to try a new recipe for Mongolian Beef this week. Maybe then I can give y’all the recipe.

So today I am falling back on a triedand-true recipe. My friend, Ann, often brings a pineapple casserole to potlucks. I

Think Spring! Come Garden With Us! Even if it's not spring just yet, gardeners are starting to scan seed catalogs and dream of getting their hands in the dirt again. Can you see yourself in this picture? If so, we have good news! Estes Valley Community Garden has some plots available to rent for the 2022 season.

Just take a quick trip to evcg.org and follow the "Get a Plot" link. You will find an application form that can be emailed directly to us. You too could be renting one of the 4'x 10' plots and enjoying a harvest of vegetables, small fruits, or flowers in the coming summer. The $50 annual fee covers support services, including irrigation, organic fertilizer, compost for topping off in spring, and garden waste disposal.

Applications are accepted year-round, with a first-come, first-served waiting list to hold your place in line until a plot becomes available for you.

We try to arrange sponsorships that cover the cost of plot rental for those who are unable to afford the annual fee.

To apply for sponsorship, just check the box, “I qualify for a sponsorship” using the income guidelines on the application form.

If during summer or fall you passed by the Garden, located at the corner of Manford Avenue and Community Drive, you probably noted the lush green vegetation under the white hail protection

covers. We were pleased to have a pretty good harvest year at the Garden, despite the pandemic and the usual challenges presented by high-elevation gardening.

The hungry ground squirrels are an ongoing “pandemic” too, but we are working on improving management strategies while trying to keep the Garden as organic as possible.

All our gardeners are encouraged to attend the spring orientation program (date to be announced) to learn more about how the Garden operates and how to get started with your plot.

In April and May we will present several free programs on gardening basics for novice gardeners or those who need a refresher, or who want to learn about the challenges of growing at our higher elevation. These educational programs will be recorded for later viewing, with links from our website, evcg.org.

There are also free monthly webinars offered by Colorado State University Extension, presented by our Larimer County Extension Agent, Dr. Alison O’Connor, and Extension Agents and Master Gardeners from around Colorado. Five Fun Facts About… Trumpeter Swans By: Dawn Wilson

This week’s featured animal is the trumpeter swan. I unfortunately missed the recent rare opportunity to see the trumpeter swans spending time on Lake Estes. I do, however, have five fun facts for you to enjoy and a few photos from other locations in their range of Alaska to the northern Rockies and northern Midwest of these beautiful and majestic birds.

1. Trumpeter swans are named for their loud honking calls.

2. These large birds represent the biggest member of the waterfowl family native to North America and are the largest swan in the world. They have a wingspan of up to 10 feet and male trumpeter swans average about 28 pounds with larger males weighing as much as 35 pounds.

3. Trumpeter swans were thought to have been hunted to extinction by 1900 for their feathers, skin, meat and eggs.

discovered in remote portions of Montana, Idaho, Wyoming and Alaska, and today, the population of trumpeter swans exceeds 16,000, with about 13,000 of those birds living in Alaska.

4. The trumpeter swan is completely white but often appears rust-colored on the head and neck. This is caused by staining from minerals in wetland soils where they feed.

5. Because of the large size of trumpeter swans, they need at least a 100 meter-

long “runway” of open water to take off.

“TWO STEPS FORWARD, ONE STEP BACK” Perhaps you’ve heard that phrase used to describe frustration with the slowness of progress in life. It apparently was coined many years ago to describe a frog’s progress on a water wheel. He would get up two steps, then fall back one, then, two forward and one back…on it goes. Perhaps you’ve watched scenes about the birth of baby turtles… either in a ‘Nemo’-type movie or on the Discovery channel. After their birth on the beach and they begin to crawl their way down the sand into deeper water, the tide comes in and sweeps them back, then it recedes and they continue their trek, ‘two forward, one back’. Eventually most arrive at their destination and continue on their life’s journey.

We all know how they feel, when they are swept back, after making some progress, don’t we? Some become so discouraged that they would describe their own journey as ‘one step forward, two steps back’. If they go through life with this depressed view their journey will seem much longer than it should. Thomas Edison was a good example. He attended school for only a short time when his teacher labeled him “too stupid to learn anything”, due probably to his early hearing problems. So his mother taught him at home and he quickly developed an interest in science. At ten years of age, he set up a small lab in the basement. At twenty, he set up a lab in Menlo Park, New Jersey, where he spent his time as a full-time inventor. Within two years, he had forty different projects going and was applying for over 400 patents a year. We know that he conducted thousands of experiments to develop an inexpensive electric light that would replace the gas light. Often ridiculed, he eventually succeeded, much to the blessing of mankind. Once asked by a reporter, “How did it feel to fail 10,000 times?” he replied, “I didn’t fail 10,000 times. The light bulb was an invention with 10,000 steps.”

Many others also ‘failed’, only to take their place among the ‘greats’ of history.

Perhaps you’ve heard of them. Henry Ford failed and went broke five times before he succeeded in developing his automobile. R.H. Macy failed seven times before his Macys store in New York City caught on. (Where would NY New Year’s parade be?) Daniel Boone was asked by a reporter if he had ever been lost in the wilderness. He thought for a moment, then replied, “No, but I was once bewildered for about three days.” The first time Jerry Seinfeld walked out on stage at a comedy club as a ‘wanna-be’ comic, he looked out at the audience, froze, and was booed off the stage. Basketball Hall of Fame star Michael Jordan was cut from his high school basketball team. He later observed, “I’ve failed over and over again in my life. That is why I succeed.” Steven Spielberg dropped out of high school.

Persuaded to come back, he was placed in a learning disabled class. He lasted a month and quit school forever. Despite that, millions have read his books and seen his movies. In 1954 the Grand Ole Opry manager fired Elvis Presley after one performance. He told Presley, “You ain’t goin’ nowhere, son. You ought to go back to driving a truck.” Over thirty publishers rejected the first Chicken Soup for the Soul. The authors were repeatedly told that no one wanted to read those ‘sappy’ little stories. Those ‘sappy little stories’ have now sold over 80 million copies.

Each of these could have thought of these ‘two step forward, one step backward’, even ‘one step forward, two steps back’ experiences as defeating, but they persisted, and we know the ‘rest of their stories’.

When we encounter those times when we fail, we will be like Charlie Brown.

Having just built a beautiful sand castle, he stepped back to admire his masterpiece, only to see it flattened by a huge wave. Staring at the now smooth spot where his day’s work had been moments before, he scratched his head and said, “There must be a lesson here, but I don’t know what it is.” We know what that lesson is. We’ve all had such times. “Two steps forward, one back.” So what? We move on! Only then do we succeed!

The Bible says, “A man’s steps are established by the Lord and He takes pleasure in his way. Though he falls, he will not be overwhelmed, because the Lord holds his hand.”

Believe it and act accordingly, to become one of God’s great ‘success’ stories.

Have You Seen Tink?

Tink's house burned down on Tuesday, January 18. She is still missing and there is no sign of her body in the house. The bodies of two other cats belonging to her owner's daughter, were found. They died of asphyxiation. Tink's family is praying for a miracle and that she might possibly have escaped from the inferno.

She is a very friendly cat and will respond to "Tink"or"Tinkerbelle."

If anyone in the Carriage Hills area, especially near Pine Meadows Drive happens to see her or has taken her in from the cold, please contact or leave a voice message for Shirley Barrow at 970-308-6200. Tink is our son's beloved pet.

Congratulations to Kyan Jellesma, the Estes Park High School Student of the Week for January 28, 2022.

At EPHS, Kyan enjoys being on the wrestling team and his favorite class is World Geography with Mr. Simmers.

He is happy about earning high GPA’s in school.

Outside of school, he likes to fish, hike, mountain bike and sled. He loves jiu jitsu and advancing to the next level. He spends a lot of time with family and friends and likes to stays close to friends that he has moved away from.

When asked his favorite vacation destination he says he loved visiting Puerto Rico but he really enjoys the mountains.

His favorite positive quote is, “The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but rising every time we fall” by Nelson Mandela.

The best piece of advice Kyan has ever been given is “If you have a dream you won’t just get it cause you want it, you have to work long and hard to get what you want.”

After high school Kyan wants to join the Air Force and become a pilot.

Successful Sustainability By: Judi Smith

When I was a child in the 1950s, everyone’s aspirations were the same. I lived in a Levittown community, where houses were quickly built by the developer, Levitt & Sons, and sold to returning soldiers under the GI Bill. Original purchasers had a choice between five colors (white, red, yellow, green and blue) and a choice of four minor variations in the floor plan. Occasionally, someone would make a change, such as enclosing the carport or extending the family room to encompass the patio. Then, hiring the same contractor, each household in the neighborhood would carbon copy the improvement, achieving the united claim to rubber stamp everyone else in an effort to “keep up with the Joneses.” This lifestyle was memorialized in the song, “Little Boxes” by Malvina Reynolds.

Today’s world is much more diverse. No longer do people need to match their neighbors. Individuals have different intentions and success varies by the goals set. Economically, some people want to amass money and they measure success by the number of dollars in the bank.

Others have a concept of the lifestyle they wish to live: the home they want to own and the luxuries (vacations, possessions, experiences) that they expect from life. Still others strive simply for self sufficient independence and the ability to feed their family, put a roof over their heads, and cope with disasters (medical or otherwise). Some include education as a method of attainment.

However, there are additional ways to determine success. Some place relationships (spouse, family, friends, clients, and colleagues) first on the list. Some value creativity, developing products and/or services that exceed expectations. This includes those who pursue patents, copyrights, and artistic interpretation. Some want to be “the best” and others want merely to do their best. Some base success on education in its own right, pursuing knowledge at every opportunity. And some aim to make a lasting difference to the sustainability of others: family, neighborhood, a specific organization or the world at large. We are very fortunate in Estes to have many individuals who look beyond their own household and strive to contribute to community suc-

cess. The efforts of more than 150 nonprofits are intersected by our local Estes Park Nonprofit Resource Center (EPNRC) which encourages collaboration.

Most local adults, especially those with less than three jobs, participate in some way.

In addition to the efforts of our formal non-profits, there are other communitywide sustainability efforts, including, but not limited to, the current Environmental Sustainability Task Force (ESTF), whose recommendations will be formally delivered on February 8th, two weeks later than my earlier assumption. Once done, we, as a town, can determine whether we should, or shouldn’t, be proactive in protecting our environmental paradise and the lives that inhabit it.

Governments can contribute by enacting laws that require sustainable practices. They can also levy fees and penalties that help to fund environmental infrastructure, grants, and other incentives, like tax credits. Governments and non-profits can often utilize these grants and other fund-raising to provide services not otherwise available, like Estes Recycles Day or the Haz-Mat collection that the town did years ago. Businesses and individuals alike, as well as internal government offices, can institute sustainable practices, like composting and recycling; encouragements promoting public transportation and bike paths; ecological uses of energy and water; renewable energy resources; and hundreds of small, but important, steps in the day to day practice of sustainable behavior.

Our Planet Partners, who collect discards from others for reuse or recycling, are an excellent example of a helping hand offered to the public by supportive organizations. See www.estesrecycles.org for a list of participants.

Governments cannot do this alone.

Businesses and organizations, public or private, for-profit or non-profit cannot do this alone. Individuals cannot do this alone. What kind of future do you want for Estes, for Colorado, for the United States and for the world?

Crossroads-Helping Take Good Care Of Our Neighbors In The Estes Valley By: Brian Schaffer

Another week is in the books at Crossroads and I can wholeheartedly say we are fulfilling our mission in a big way.

People are coming in for groceries and interacting with volunteers and staff members who exude the love of God. Loving our neighbors in word and deed is really important to us and we want to always keep this front of mind as we deliver basic human services to every person who shows up at our place. At times we can get so busy “doing” the work that we lose sight of the importance of “being” the hands and feet of Christ. As we pack groceries and place them in the back seat or trunk of someone’s vehicle we are a tangible expression of what love for neighbor looks and feels like as it passes from one human to another. We know in our mind it’s the right thing to do and once this sinks deep into our heart it compels us to spring into action to make sure what we belief is lived out in real time. We are extremely thankful for the staff members and volunteers that choose to serve at Crossroads.

I was reminded last week of how hard life is for many of our clients. I don’t know everyone’s story, but I know of a few and they are worth sharing with you as we partner together in taking good care of our neighbors in the Estes Valley.

One of our clients is working an eighthour shift at night stocking shelves at

Safeway and then after a few hours of sleep he goes to another job to make sure he has enough money to live on. Of course, we help him with groceries as a way of saving a few dollars so he can put his money into other areas to make ends meet. Another client takes her kids to school and then works at a high rate of speed and efficiency to clean houses on her list before it’s time to pick them back up. Between being a single mother and provider for her family she is dealing with a child that needs to be driven to Children’s Hospital in Aurora once a week for treatment. We’ve been able to come alongside her in providing fuel for her vehicle and groceries to fill her cupboards and this seems to be a real encouragement to her. We’re also helping her find a better housing option to make sure her precious family has a place to lay their heads at night. For each of these two clients we’re offering help for the immediate need and hope for better days ahead as we journey with them along the way. We don’t always see the visible impact we’re making right away, but we believe strongly that the loving care we give each person in the delivery of services will take root and produce a harvest in due season. Through the work we do we realize that some will plant, others will water and God will bring the growth. We’re praying for a bountiful harvest in 2022!

Library One Book One Valley Grand Finale: Saturday Author Event On Zoom The community is invited to join awardwinning and bestselling international author Dr. Nguyễn Phan Quế Mai for a one-eveningonly live-remote presentation to the Estes Valley discussing her acclaimed novel, “The Mountains Sing”, a multigenerational tale of Viet Nam and this year’s One Book One Valley selection. The program takes place via Zoom this Saturday, January 29 from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

Quế Mai is the author of eleven books of poetry, fiction and non-fiction. “The Mountain Sing” is her debut novel and first book written directly in English, and a winner of the 2021 International Book Awards. She is passionate about inspiring others, and among her volunteers roles, she serves as a creative writing teacher at Roshan Learning Center for Refugees.

Born in a small village in the North of Viet Nam in 1973, Quế Mai migrated with her family to the Mekong Delta in southern Viet Nam when she was six years old. Her parents worked as teachers and rice farmers. Together with her two elder brothers, she did many types of jobs to help her family earn their living, including working on rice fields and selling vegetables. In 1992, a scholarship from the Australian government enabled her to travel and study outside Viet Nam for the first time. In 2016, Quế Mai pursued her childhood dream of becoming a writer.

She wrote “The Mountains Sing” to bring authentic voices of Viet Nam into American literature.

Set against the backdrop of the Viet Nam War, the novel tells the story of the

Trần family.

Trần Diệu Lan, born in 1920, was forced to flee her family farm with her six children during the Land Reform as the Communist government rose in the North. Years later in Hà Nội, her young granddaughter, Hương, comes of age as her parents and uncles head off down the Hồ Chí Minh Trail to fight in a conflict that would tear apart not just her beloved country, but also her family.

“Kirkus Reviews” describes the book as, “A sweeping tale of one family’s fortunes in Vietnam over half a century … invitingly and gracefully told. [The author] is particularly adept at weaving in folktales and aphorisms to create a vivid sense of place. A richly imagined story of severed bonds amid conflict.”

Danielle Deaun Owens Danielle Deaun Owens, 37 years of age, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 13th at McKee Medical Center in Loveland, Colorado.

Danielle was born in Wheatridge, CO on August 2nd, 1984 to Daniel Jay Owens and Sheila Denise Bersos. She has one sibling, a sister named Danae Catherine Owens. She is survived by her mother, step father (Clarence Eugene Bersos), and sister.

Danielle grew up to design websites, build computers, and she was a fantastic waitress. She is survived by her three children: Ashley (18), Elizabeth (16), and Matthew Doan (12). Her children will always remember her as the fun loving, goofy, brilliant, and creative

mother she was. Her friends and other family members will never forget her kindness, helpfulness, and personality. Her mother, sister, and step father will hold their many memories with her close to them forever. Danielle will never be forgotten.
