The Town of Estes Park will waive penalties and service disconnects on any federal worker's unpaid water and electric bills from December forward, until one month after the partial government shutdown ends. Affected individuals may request details and assistance by visiting Utility Billing staff at Town Hall or calling 970-586-5331.

Affinity Massage & Wellness Center says that RMNP might be closed, but they aren't, and they would like to help our community members who are being affected. 30-min. appts -$ 20 and 60-min. appts - $40 (with gov't ID) please call them at 970-586-3401.

Airbits-To ease the burden on Airbits customers who are affected by the government shutdown, please bring your government-issued ID to us for free Internet for as long as the shutdown continues. We want to be the last thing you worry about.

Alpine Bank is offering interest-free personal loans equal to a worker’s monthly pay (even for federal employees who are not customers).

Antonio’s Real New York Pizza has donated a revolving gift card that will provide food for furloughed federal employees in need.

You can add to it (as the Estes Park News did) and they will keep it going until the funds run out or the needs diminish. Ask for a “Help from Friends” order at 970-5867275. To donate funds, call the same number.

For AT&T customers affected by the shutdown, the company says they are eligible for flexible payment options to keep their phone service up and running. Contact AT&T for details.

Big Red F Restaurant Group (The Post Brewing Co., Jax Fish House & Oyster Bar, Centro Mexican Kitchen, West End Tavern and Zolo Southwestern Grill) is offering free weekday lunches to furloughed workers beginning Monday, Jan. 14.

Chase Bank says it will waive or refund any overdraft and monthly service fees for customers who are furloughed government employees.

Colorado Railroad Museum is providing free admission to furloughed workers and their immediate families.

Country Market says "All of us at The

Country Market are seeing firsthand the effect the government shutdown is having on our town’s park employees. They use to come in every day, some of them a couple of times a day. Our little store has been a ghost town without park people coming in. So with that being said, we would like to extend store credit to anyone affected by the government shut down. Employees may come in and shop and not pay us back until the shutdown is over and you catch back up. This is credit with no interest added to it. We hope this helps in some small way."

Credit Union of Denver and Sunwest Educational Credit are offering payment deferrals and interest-free loans.

Crossroads Ministry of Estes Park says "Ever since the government shutdown, Crossroads has been offering groceries once a week to federal employees. Beginning this week we are offering to assist in a deeper way with one-time financial assistance to go directly toward housing and utilities. Food can be given out by simply showing a government ID. Financial assistance will involve scheduling an appointment with our Case Manager.

Metrum Community Credit Union is offering interest-free personal loans equal to a worker’s monthly pay.

A new Temporary Mortgage Assistance Program will offer financial assistance to homeowners who are facing hardship due to unexpected changes in their employment status – including furlough, temporary layoff or significant reduction of hours worked. The program, being offered through a partnership with Mile High United Way’s 2-1-1 Call Center, will provide households up to two months or $5,000 maximum of help to cover mortgage payments. The Program will begin accepting applications on January 16 through Mile High United Way’s 2-1-1 Call Center.

Papa John’s is offering two one-topping pizzas and a 2-liter soda for free.

Rock Cut Brewing Company is supporting our neighbors and friends who are employed by the federal government (especially Rocky Mountain National Park employees who give so much to our community's incredible "backyard"), by buying them a beer or two during the shutdown. The Roost says "Come in every day if you want, we’ve got you! Free lunch for furloughed government employees" Impacted government employees can apply for Verizon’s "Promise to Pay" feature, which allows customers to set up a future date to pay a bill.

YMCA of the Rockies is inviting federal workers and their families to enjoy a day of recreation and a meal-on them! One free day pass per family member gets you each access to our on-site activities and a meal in the Aspen dining hall. Visit any day of the week and pick up your day pass at the front desk of the Administration building. Must show an Estes Valley address and federal employment ID. Offer available as long as the furlough is in effect.

Rocky Mountain National Park Restores Accessibility And Resumes Basic Visitor Services Park restores access to recently closed areas after cleanup/maintenance operations Rocky Mountain National Park announced this week that areas that have been closed due to the inability to plow and maintain roads, will once again be accessible to visitors. On Saturday, January 12, a limited number of park staff began snowplowing US 36 past the Beaver Meadows Visitor Center and US 34 past the Fall River Entrance. On Jan. 14, US Highways 36 and 34 were reopened to Deer Ridge Junction. Trail Ridge Road beyond Deer Ridge Junction to Many Parks Curve has also reopened. US Highway 34 on the west side is now open to the Colorado River Trailhead. Snowplows have been working on Bear Lake Road and it was anticipated that it would reopen last Tuesday.

Also this past Saturday, a limited number of custodians began cleaning toilet facilities and trash receptacles. Some basic visitor services, including entrance stations and two out of five loops at the Moraine Park Campground, will also reopen later this week. Entrance stations will be open to provide safety and basic information to visitors, but entrance fees will not be collected.

These basic services are being funded with revenue generated by recreation

fees. National Park Service officials have determined that by using Federal Land and Recreation Enhancement funds to bring back limited park maintenance staff to plow roads, clean restrooms, and remove trash, the park can restore accessibility to the park for visitors.

Outdoor areas of the park remain accessible. Most facilities, including Beaver Meadows Visitor Center on the east side and Kawuneeche Visitor Center on the west side will remain closed.

“We greatly appreciate Rocky Mountain Conservancy’s efforts to staff the Fall River Visitor Center during the lapse in appropriations,” said park superintendent Darla Sidles. Fall River Visitor Center is located outside of the park near the Fall River Entrance.

While basic visitor services have been restored, other services will be limited or unavailable during the lapse in appropriations, including visitor centers, ranger talks and programs. Visitors are reminded that all rules and regulations apply. Visitors should visit the park website at nps.gov/romo while planning their visit to get the latest information on accessibility and available services.

The charge(s) are merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

On January 7 at 9:15 p.m. police received a call about a disturbance at 917 Moraine Ave. Upon arrival they arrested a 22 year old male from Estes Park and charged him with third degree assault, domestic violence, second degree burglary and harassment. The victim in this case was 19 years old. The male was transported to the Larimer County Jail.

EVFPD firefighters generally respond to medical calls in their personal vehicles, allowing for a faster response. On other incidents, firefighters respond to a fire station to respond in department apparatus with specialized equipment.

Man Arrested After Reckless Driving, Multiple Hit-And-Runs With Vehicles In Estes Park Estes Park Police and Larimer County Sheriff 's office arrested a 35 year old male of Denver, Colorado, in the 1700 block of Spur 66 in Estes Park last Thursday morning, January 10.

The Estes Park Police Department received a report of a reckless driver coming into Estes Park on U.S. 36 around 8:22 a.m. Officers located and observed the driver swerving, striking another vehicle and continuing at a high rate of speed. The suspect damaged multiple parked vehicles on his route. Fortunately, no one was injured before the suspect was apprehended in the Spur 66 area.

National Park Service law enforcement rangers assisted the Estes Park Police and Larimer County Sheriff 's office with this incident.

Police Chief Wes Kufeld commented, "This was a fast-developing situation that officers from the three agencies resolved in a highly coordinated manner

before it became deadly."

The male was transferred to the Larimer County Jail. He is expected to be charged with Driving Under Revocation (Misdemeanor), Driving Without Valid Vehicle Registration, Driving Without Insurance (Misdemeanor Traffic 1), Driving Under the Influence of Drugs (Misdemeanor), Displaying Fictitious Plates (Misdemeanor Traffic 2), Running a Red Light (three charges), Motor Vehicle Hit and Run (four charges), Felony Eluding a Police Officer (Class 5 Felony), Possession of Controlled Substance (Class 4 Felony), Reckless Endangerment (Misdemeanor 3), Reckless Driving (Misdemeanor Traffic 2) and Failure to Appear on a Warrant.

The charges are merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

The District Attorney for the Eighth Judicial District of Colorado has assumed responsibility for the case. No further information will be released by the Estes Park Police Department.

The Board of County Commissioners and the Environmental and Science Advisory Board [ESAB] are taking nominations for the 2019 Environmental Stewardship Awards. Both individuals and organizations are invited to participate.

Annual League Of Women Voters Program Planning Meeting Jan. 23 In addition to our well-known voter educational events, the League of Women Voters advocates for public policy issues that we have studied and taken positions on. Going back to our founding, as we fought for women’s right to vote almost a century ago, the League has fought many policy battles.

The most recognized effort of our League in Estes Park was our successful lobbying almost 20 years ago to persuade Congress to ban sight-seeing flights over Rocky Mountain National Park.

The League can only advocate for policy if we have studied the issue and created a position statement about it.

These positions are not formed in darkened rooms, but with the input of our members and from the public we serve.

Each year, we review the positions of the Estes Park League, along with selected positions of the National and State Leagues, to reaffirm our commitment to them. This year’s program

License Your Dog For 2019It’s Safe, Smart And It’s The Law! Town of Estes Park dog licenses for 2019 are now available at the customer service windows at Town Hall, 170 MacGregor Ave. Licenses may also be acquired at Animal Medical Center of Estes Park at 1260 Manford Ave. and Animal Hospital of the Rockies at 453 Pine River Lane. Owners with dogs who reside within the Estes Park town limits are required by the Municipal Code to maintain a current dog license and a current rabies vaccination through a veterinarian.

Licenses cost $5 for each spayed or neutered dog. Licenses for unaltered dogs cost $15. Owners must provide the rabies vaccination registration number that was provided with the vaccination. A tag is issued with the license which must be attached to the dog's collar at all times. If a dog is found at-large and not licensed, the owner may be cited with municipal charges and impound fees.

Dog licensing provides several important health and safety benefits, including:

Faster reunification of lost pets with their owners, reducing animal stress and health and safety risks Reduced sheltering needs and lower euthanasia rates Improved ability to plan and deliver animal services because the size, type and location of the dog population is known Improved ability to enforce Town ordinances because owners can be identified and held accountable for the behavior of their pets Larimer County requires that dogs living in unincorporated areas of the county maintain current rabies vaccination as well as a county pet license. 1917 Book Club To Take Place February 20, 2019 On Wednesday, February 20, 2019, the 1917 Book Club hosted by the Estes Park Museum will explore local title, This Week in Estes Park: The Story of Our Town by Mel Busch edited by Andrew and Melinda Busch. Due to construction work at the Museum, the program will be held in the Hondius Room of the Estes Valley Library from 1 - 2:30 p.m. Light snacks will be provided. This program is free and open to the public. It is strongly encouraged that participants read each book prior to the program to take part in the discussion.

The first selection is This Week in Estes Park: The Story of Our Town by Mel Busch, former Director of the Estes Park Area Historical Museum. "Mel Busch takes you through this history in short stories focusing on the people and events of Estes Park through the years. Originally published by the Estes Park TrailGazette as articles entitled, 'This Week in History,' these stories range from Estes Park's connection to the world crises to the tragedies, comedies, accomplishments, and foibles of ordinary residents.

Utilizing accounts in the Trail-Gazette,

memoirs of participants, and other sources, Busch brings Estes Park history to life - one week at a time." Current Estes Park Museum Director, Derek Fortini will be in attendance to contribute to a lively discussion facilitated by museum staff.

On January 14, Estes Park Health and Estes Valley Recreation and Parks District hosted the Garth Englund Blood Center Blood Drive at the Community Center. The community’s response to the critical need for blood was tremendous.

We welcomed back many familiar faces and we met many first time blood donors! This community’s response generated over 80 units of blood for Northern Colorado and the Estes Valley Community. Every unit of blood can save three lives!

As I was putting on my coat after an early morning church service, I saw that a man nearby had dropped his earmuffs. As most anyone would, I went over, picked up the muffs and handed them to him. We both smiled, he said thank you and off he went in one direction and I in another. That small exchange of “do-goodin’” as my dad called it, made a difference in both of our days.

The man’s, because he almost lost his earmuffs but then he didn’t, and mine, because it felt good to be kind, even in the smallest of ways. Warmth accompanied both of us out the door that cold winter morning.

Remember when “random acts of kindness” was a catch phrase in the ’80s? (The original phrase was “random acts of kindness and senseless acts of beauty.”) Back then, people were intentionally doing unselfish things for others, often anonymously.

Back then it was cool to be kind. Back then there was no such thing as a selfie so kindness for social media’s sake didn’t exist. Back then the Berlin Wall came down. Reunification—what a concept! It’s the exact opposite of what our wall would do if it were ever built. (I hope it won’t be, because our country builds bridges, not walls! We are the United States, after all. We unite.)

(Oops. I slipped a little political commentary in there. Sorry to those who disagree.

The nice thing is, we don’t have to agree to be kind to one another.)

Here we are, 30-plus years after “random acts of kindness” was hip, and where are we?

After I read the newspaper every morning I admit I don’t feel kind. Instead, I am sad, angry and frustrated. So many lies, so much corruption, and although it’s not a part of my day-in-day-out life, so many guns, so much murder, poverty, and bullying. The list of reasons to believe Life is Terrible, Horrible, No Good and Very Bad is endless.

But there, in the sports section this week, was a story about a homeless guy who helped Jeff Allen, a Kansas City Chiefs offensive lineman, get his car back on the road after being stuck in the snow. “Dave” didn’t know he was helping a pro football player get to a playoff game and Allen didn’t know Dave was homeless. Once the public

found out about Dave’s random act of kindness, he received $10,000 in 24 hours through a GoFundMe account set up by a stranger to Dave, he was offered free dental care, free vet care for his puppy, and he gets to go to the Chiefs’ game on Sunday as a guest of Allen’s. (With a predicted high of five degrees at Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday, I’m not so sure that was a gift.)

I wonder how I would have reacted if a strange man, looking less than “respectable,” came up to me and offered to help with my car. I suspect I would have said, “Thanks but no thanks.” I’d be afraid to interact with someone who might not smell like he took a shower recently. I’d be uncomfortable with his raggedy clothes, fearful of the unknown.

But who am I to judge? Dave, who sleeps in his truck, has his problems, but he also spends his days helping people get their cars back on the road after a big snow. I can’t remember the last time I’ve done that.

When my mom and her friend Ann went to lunch early in their four-decades-long friendship, Ann drove. She told me later, “Your mom waved at everyone we passed. I watched her and thought, ‘this woman is someone I want to hang out with! She waves at everyone!’” Ann herself is one of those people who gives mini-gifts, often for no apparent reason. Once she handed me a little silver coin with an angel on it to look over me during a particularly troubling time. Years later I remember how much that act of kindness made me feel loved and supported when the bottom had dropped out of my life. That one tiny token of kindness carried me a long way toward healing.

An angel coin. A wave. A push out of the snow…it doesn’t take much. Let’s make random acts of kindness popular again. During this time when Life seems Terrible, Horrible, No Good and Very Bad, some “dogoodin,’” is just what we all need.

Harmony Foundation Opens Fort Collins Extension In Addiction Recovery Expansion Harmony Foundation, a Coloradobased addiction treatment center, has launched its first Recovery Foundation Recovery Center at Fort Collins, Colorado. Harmony will be hosting a grand opening at 109 Cameron Drive that is open to the public on Wednesday January 16, 2019. Doors will be open 7 a.m.– 9:30 a.m., 12 p.m.–1:30 p.m. and 4 p.m.– 6 p.m. The program at this location is designed to improve the recovery management tools available for graduates (alumni) of the Harmony program, families, and others through continued recovery support.

This expansion was possible thanks to a $100,000 Daniels Fund grant to support new initiatives in long-term recovery services. The Daniels Fund, established by cable television pioneer Bill Daniels, is a private charitable foundation dedicated to making life better for the people of Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming through its grants program, scholarship program, and ethics initiative.

Services will include: • Aftercare groups for alumni and families weekly on Wednesday and Thursday evenings from 6:30–8:30 p.m.

• Telephonic, online, and face-to-face recovery coaching services • Events and workshops that support early recovery skill-building including financial planning, nutrition classes, career building, and resource development for recovery support.

• Non-Harmony alumni are invited to participate in most programming for a small fee Studies have supported findings that addressing addiction as a chronic disease and including long-term professional care can improve results. Both active involvement in 12-Step mutual-help organizations and recovery-supportive,

professional services that link patients with these community-based resources may enhance outcomes for emerging adults after residential treatment.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), part of the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services Administration, has established a working definition of recovery which describes it as a process of change through which individuals improve their health and wellness, live self-directed lives, and strive to reach their full potential.

Electric Cars Are Coming On Thursday, January 24, at the Estes Park Senior Citizens Center located in the Masonic Lodge at 1829 S. St.Vrain (Hwy. 7), a short program on electric vehicles will be given beginning at 12:30 p.m. Two local residents will bring their Tesla electric vehicles (EVs) for us to examine after a general discussion of living with an electric car.

As we transition to a world energized primarily by solar energy, many devices we commonly use will be transformed into something quite different from the familiar. For example, the device most of us think of as an automobile will undergo a thorough transformation. Although it will still convey us around to our many destinations, it will do so with the following differences from a more traditional internal combustion vehicle.

(1) It will do so without emitting exhaust gases that are harmful to humans, resulting in cleaner air.

(2) Because it is being powered with electricity, it will have a lower operating cost than autos running on gasoline.

(3) Because electric motors are essentially silent, travel noise will be limited to the road noise produced by rotating tires.

(4) Because large factories in modern civilizations now have years of experience building electric motors, those motors have become progressively less expensive to make at the same time they have become very durable. The net result is that the maintenance cost of elec-

tric vehicles will also be less expensive, i.e., no more regular lubes and oil changes.

(5) Because no internal combustion engine will be occupying its own large space, additional room for a suitcase or two will be available when you wish to take a trip, or carry an extra bag of groceries.

(6) Finally, electric vehicles often have astonishing acceleration comparable to high-end automobiles using internal combustion engines (e.g., Ferrari , Lamborghini).

Auditions For Production Of Bye Bye Birdie: Young Performers Edition Estes Park youth, mark your calendars!

Auditions for the Fine Arts Guild Youth Theatre Camp are around the corner.

This summer the Youth Theatre will perform Bye Bye Birdie: Young Performers Edition.

Bye Bye Birdie takes the audience to 1960s small town America and the era of early Rock n’Roll. Conrad Birdie, a teenage rock and roll idol, has been inducted into the army and his managers concoct a publicity stunt to send him off.

Birdie will bid a typical teenage girl goodbye with a public goodbye kiss. The lucky girl, randomly chosen, is Kim McAfee of Sweet Valley, Ohio, a member of Conrad Birdie’s fan club. Birdie travels to Sweet Valley and the fun begins! This is an upbeat, funny musical with energetic dance and musical numbers for the entire cast.

Everyone who auditions will be cast.

This summer’s camp will be directed by Danielle Hermon Wood, the Music Director of the Bixby School in Boulder and a nominee for the Colorado Theatre Guild’s Henry Award for Outstanding Actress in a musical. Choreographer Becca Greer is the teaching assistant at Parker Performing Arts and instructor, performer and choreographer for Inspire Theater Company at the PACE Center.

The Technical Director, Greig Steiner, has been a force in the arts community in Estes Park for over 60 years. His tal-

ents span all of the visual arts and include sets designed in California, Estes Park and Ft. Collins.

The two week Theatre Camp takes place weekdays, June 17 – June 28 from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Production camp is open to students entering grade 4 through grade 12. Technical camp is open to students entering grade 6 through grade 12. Technical students will learn to build sets and props and work with sound and lighting. Performances are June 29th and 30th. Tuition is $225 for the production camp and $175 for the technical camp.

Scholarships are available to Estes Park School District students.

Auditions will be held April 13th from 10-4:30 at the Estes Park High School Auditorium. Students need to prepare 16-32 bars of a musical theater selection with sheet music or a backing track. A cappella auditions are not permitted.

SEQUOIA OR SCRUB OAK? If you visit King’s Canyon National Park, you are entering the home of ‘General Grant’…the second-tallest living thing on earth, at 267 feet tall, 40 feet in diameter, and 107 feet in basal circumference. It’s been called the ‘Nation’s Christmas Tree,’ also, the nation’s only living National Shrine, having been dedicated to Americans who died serving our country during war. You can’t help feeling a sense of awe as you stand before this massive creation of God. While California Redwoods grow taller, Sequoias are the largest, growing larger trunks and wider branches, having bark that can be four feet thick. The trees can grow up to two feet per year and live hundreds of years.

The Scrub Oak, on the other hand, makes much less of an impression. It has prickly, dull-colored leaves which are hairy on the underside. They rarely grow taller than eight feet. They are considered a hybrid and thought of as more of a scrub than a tree. When Scrub Oaks combine together in ‘groves’, they form bramble thickets. Their acorns are distinct for their hairy, warty, and overlapping scales when they reach maturity. What is interesting is that one species of Scrub Oaks grows near where Sequoias and Redwoods flourish, enjoying the same general conditions, having access to the same nutrients, soil, and weather conditions, as the admired Redwoods and Sequoias. Despite that environment, it is evident that they are made of totally different stuff!

Do you suppose, if a Scrub Oak could think, that it might gaze admiringly at the massive Sequoias nearby and wish that it could be one? Of course, to change from one to the other would be impossible because it was created by God to be a Scrub Oak. This longing often rests in the heart of we humans. When have you gazed admiringly at another person and wished that you were them, or at least, possessed the qualities they excel in? We often hear people refer to someone as a ‘Wanna-be’. Such people view someone gifted with certain qualities that they admire and wish that they were them…or at least very much like them. Have you ever looked at someone who was an excellent athlete, with impressive agility, and wrestled with that ‘Wanna-be’ attitude, when you’re a person who can’t walk and chew gum at the same time? Perhaps your ‘Wanna-be’ feelings cause you to want to be seen as intellectual, when you have only average intellect; or financially blessed…even rich…when you are a person who is just ‘getting by’. Quite likely, in things like this, we have little choice. Like the lowly Scrub Oak, we are who we are, and we can do little to change it. Jesus addressed this ‘longing’ and the worry that so often attends it, when He said, “Which of you, by taking thought, can add one cubit to his stature…or days to his life expectancy?” We need to accept our- self for who we are and do the best we can with that.

While I don’t have much choice about who I am and natural limitations present in my life, I do have choices about what I do with who I am. I love the words of an old sage who said, “If you are a street sweeper, be the best street sweeper you can be!” That is certainly good advice for us all. We need to use what intellect and physical ability we have to achieve all we can. Someone once said: “It’s not what you would do with millions, if riches should be your lot, it’s what you do at the present with the dollar and a quarter you’ve got!” We need to be the best we can be with who and what we are.

The same goes for choices about what kind of spirit we are going to nurture. Are we going to be kind, caring about others, willing to serve others and God? We do have those choices and we can be a ‘Sequoia-spirit’ person by being ‘tall’ in all these areas. God will be pleased with each of us as we strive to be the best ‘me’ we can be.

Cooking Classes To Help Keep Your New Year’s Resolution To Eat Healthier Chazz Glaze

Salud Family Health Center, together with the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), a national nonprofit organization that promotes preventive medicine, particularly good nutrition, and supports higher standards in research, is offering a cooking course designed to help local residents cook healthy, easy meals at home (that don’t cost an arm and a leg), leading to weight loss and improved health through proper diet and nutrition.

“Losing weight has never been easier,” says Susan Levin, M.S., R.D., the director of nutrition education for PCRM. “Participants can expect to lose a pound a week without counting calories. Many experience significant health benefits, including lowered cholesterol and blood pressure, elimination of chronic pain, and increased energy.”

The Rx for weight loss and health? It’s a low-fat vegetarian diet. Load up on fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, Levin says; they’re naturally low in fat, chock-full of fiber, and filled with immune-boosting antioxidants and phytochemicals. These foods will naturally tame your appetite and boost metabolism.

The challenge, Levin acknowledges, is not only to teach people which foods are good for them, but also to show them how to make the foods taste good. Each class centers on important nutrition topics as local cooking instructor Chazz Glaze guides students through the preparation of tasty and easy-to-prepare recipes.

Celebrate The People Of Rocky Mountain National Park

The significance of Rocky Mountain National Park to the life of our local community can hardly be overstated. The park is a source of both joy and adventure, as well a destination linked to our economic vitality. It helps to unify us to a common experience. And while its magnificent trails and scenery are etched into our minds, it is a place made equally unique through its people: the employees, contractors, volunteers, and their families who give their talents toward

Community members who are able are invited to bring a potluck dish to share.

To stay in keeping with the eco-friendly spirit of the Park, bring your own plates and utensils.

The program will include activities to celebrate the Park for all ages. Festivities will include a hands-on Maker activity.

The Library staff will lead a Rocky Mountain National Park-themed storytime in the Fireplace Corner at 5:15 p.m.

There will be a kids’ winter ecology program at 5:45 p.m., led by Rocky

Mountain Conservancy. And at 6:15 p.m., local actor and librarian Kurtis Kelly will lead an Enos Mill living-history re-enactment.

The library thanks Rocky Mountain Conservancy for being a partner in this event.

Among the five key goals of the library’s current strategic plan is to “enable a greater sense of community.” That also calls for the library to “partner in celebrations of civic life and village events.”

Thursday’s special program is offered as an opportunity to support this important goal, which has been prioritized through community feedback.

Last Chance To Donate To Quota Club Ambulance Fund It is again time to rally together for a new ambulance for Estes Park Health, formerly Estes Park Medical Center, and the Emergency Medical Services Team (EMS). e entire community and all of our visitors count on an ambulance being available when there is a need.

Did you know?

• Five ambulances are in service at all times, answering calls that cover a 1000 square miles. e EMS answer calls from Allenspark, Big Elk Meadows, Estes Park, Glen Haven, Pinewood Springs, and Le Hand Fire District.

• e budget for the ambulance maintenance alone is $52,000.00 annually. Two of the five, ambulances have over 200,000 miles on the odometer.

• 31% of the ambulance calls are for transfer of patients to hospitals out of the Estes Park area.

• e cost of a new fully equipped ambulance will be approximately $230,000.00.

Unlike many places, our ambulances are not supported by tax dollars. e Department of Emergency Services, through Estes Park Health, purchases these ambulances with the help of community funds and money set aside by the medical center for capital purchases. is

ProtĂŠgĂŠ Continues Esa Burkhardt 11th Grade

The pilot for ProtĂŠgĂŠ, Ballet Renaissanceâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s new initiative to inspire and reward commitment to classical training in particularly talented students, regardless of financial circumstance, resumes in Estes this January thru May 2019 Season, thanks to a continuing partnership with Presbyterian Community Church of the Rockies.

Pilot programs for ProtĂŠgĂŠ have been successful and give Ballet Renaissance a better sense of what it will take to launch ProtĂŠgĂŠ on a larger scale.

The first pilot for ProtĂŠgĂŠ took place a year ago, during the Winter/Spring 2018 Season, in partnership with Boys & Girls Clubs of Larimer County in Loveland, and was supported by a Group Publishing Grant, awarded to Ballet Renaissance in October of 2017.

This past fallâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 2018 ProtĂŠgĂŠ Pilot in Estes was supported by a generous anonymous donor who pledged $1,000 in a Fall 2018 Matching Challenge, and by the first three supporters who met that challenge: The Grey House (with its Fall 2018 Benefit), the Presbyterian Women of the Presbyterian Community Church of the Rockies, and another anonymous individual who lives in Estes Park. These gifts covered full tuition scholarships for all eight Fall 2018 Estes Park ProtĂŠgĂŠ Pilot participants, plus costs to purchase several new ballet barres needed for the program. An additional generous gift from the St. Bartholomewâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Guild gets things started for the new season, as Ballet Renaissance begins to raise funds need to cover scholarships for Winter/Spring 2019 participants.

ProtĂŠgĂŠ students are expected to work in a careful and meticulous manner dur-

ing class-time and to attend classes consistently. ProtĂŠgĂŠ students are handpicked based on focus and commitment, and must meet specific criteria including a minimum age requirement and exhibiting a track record of consistent attendance and committed training over an extended period of time. All ProtĂŠgĂŠ students are expected to continue studies in Ballet Renaissance Tuesday classes. ProtĂŠgĂŠ is designed to augment the studentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; weekly classical studies, rather than substitute for classes in which students are already enrolled.

ProtĂŠgĂŠ is a tuition-free (full scholarship) program for qualifying students and parallels the time-honored model of rewarding talent and commitment to classical studies, prevalent throughout the professional classical training community. This model enables the development of a high-quality training pool, while simultaneously eliminating financial barriers that might otherwise prohibit particularly talented and committed students from studying.

Congratulations to Esa Burkhardt, the Estes Park News Student of the Week for January 18, 2019.

In school activities that Esa enjoys are being a member of the Interact Club (three years), in the Environmental Club (two years) and the Youth in Action Club (one year) and she is on the volleyball team. She maintains a 3.98 GPA, lettered in academics and has been on the Honor Roll for two years in a row.

Outside of school she likes taking pictures, going to Kind Coffee with friends and playing with her dogs.

Art Center Is Pleased To Announce Art Education Opportunities For 2019 The Art Center has an exciting line-up of educational free presentations and a myriad of classes being offered this year, and we hope you’ll take the time to treat yourself to art.

First off, we welcome back Chuck Benson, art and architectural historian, architectural designer and principal, and traveler in search of beauty and wonder, who will join us once again for the first in a series of three of this season’s series of free presentations at the Art Center. If you haven’t been to one of Chuck’s presentations, you don’t know how engaging and informative they are, so come join us at the Art Center of Estes Park, Saturday, January 26, at 7:00 p.m.

Chuck will be presenting “A view through both the Mirror & the Looking Glass…Great Masters of Light & Space.”

This presentation will focus upon such iconic masters as Jan Van Eyck, Hans Holbein, Johannes Vermeer, & Diego Velasquez exploring their astonishing abilities to draw us into their masterworks with the use of mirrors, reflections, and manipulation of three-dimensional space! Come explore the “Worlds within Worlds” that some of the greatest artists of all time created. Join us for this free presentation.

Next up we will be offering a monthly series “Painting with Cathy Goodale at the Art Center of Estes Park.”

This is a wonderful opportunity to

paint with well-known local artist, Cathy Goodale, who will be teaching monthly during 2019 at the Art Center.

Your choice—oils or watercolor. Students at all levels of experience are welcome.

A Store Is Born: Plans Underway For Future Book Sales How do you build a bookstore? One book at a time.

This month marks an exciting time for the Library Friends & Foundation. An enthusiastic team of volunteers is working to renovate the former Master Graphics building at 191 West Riverside Drive, as we create a new year-round space for library used book sales.

One of the biggest changes has gone smoothly in its first week. After more than 25 of years of receiving used book donations at the library’s Elkhorn Avenue location, we’ve asked everyone to re-direct materials to the new site.

Additionally, we’ve been moving the sorting operations (yes—every book donation will continue to be sorted into genre categories) from the library to the new store.

On any given day this month, you might find volunteers removing old carpet, spackling walls, or painting. While certain renovations will be done by contractors, we are grateful for the abundance of volunteer “sweat equity” that is going into this project. It is a labor of love, from so many who have a love for their local library.

Estes Valley Board Of REALTORS® Donates To Crossroads For Housing Assistance The Estes Valley Board of REALTORS recently donated to Crossroads with funds to help their clients with housing needs.

The Estes Valley Housing Initiative was set up with the express purpose of serving emergency housing needs in the Estes Valley. In the last two years needs had been evaluated on a case by case basis. This year, the EVBOR agreed to present a yearly grant of $2,500 (to be adjusted if the need is there). This will

It reminds me of what Mark Twain once said, "Everybody talks about the weather, but nobody does anything about it." Rather than buy into all the doom and gloom, our team feels bullish about 2019 and we think you should, too. Here are our reasons for optimism, and later we'll talk about what you should do about it: 1. Let's face it, news stories about a looming "recession" sell newspapers, take up airtime on cable TV and motivate folks to click on blogs and business websites. We're concerned all that talk can turn in a selffulfilling prophecy.

2. The unemployment rate in Northern Colorado remains below 3%.

3. In the last two months, the stock market dropped 15%. Yet even with the recent decline, the market is still up 14 % since January 1, 201 7. Historically, the stock market has averaged 8% growth per year, so maybe 14 % in two years is closer to where we need to be.

4. According to Zillow, housing prices rose 8% in Denver and are expected to increase another 7.3% in 2019.

5. Maybe what we're seeing is a "cooldown." Low unemployment rates, low interest rates and the recent dramatic rise in labor and material costs is unsustainable based on historic trends. Maybe the economy has been so hot and frenetic the past several years, that it's time for us to catch our breath.

Before anyone thinks we wear rose-colored glasses (although we have set our

faces to the sun!), here are some practical tips to guard the health of your business.

HINT - these tips work in the best of times, but are essential in the worst of times: 1. Do you maintain a Sales Pipeline? Are you tracking the status of pending or proposed projects, as well as marketing for leads on prospective projects? A Sales Pipeline will give you insight as to the volume and velocity of future work.

2. Do you know the status of your workin-progress? Are you tracking profit margins in real time to identify bottlenecks and opportunities to issue change orders?

Are you winning the work, but losing the profit?

3. Do you sell to customers on credit? If so, are you watching the aging of your Accounts Receivable? Are the 60+ day amounts beginning to rise? Unlike wine, those receivables never age well. Get on it!

Perhaps start asking for retainers and advance deposits.

Beverley Ray Beverley Ray of Estes Park passed away on January 8 after a lengthy and brave battle with cancer.

Beverley was born in 1942 in Boston, Massachusetts and grew up in Arlington, MA with her parents Gwendolyn and Stanley Baker and her brother Don Baker.

Beverley was married to Ed Ray for over thirty five years and had resided with him in Estes Park for over twenty years. Beverley had one son, Steven Bond from her first marriage to Frank Bond. Beverly also had a step daughter, Laurie Adams, whose father was her second husband Jack Adams.

Beverley worked for many years in a family office supply business in Stuart, Florida with her husband Ed, her son Steven and her brother Don. Beverly lived in Florida for over thirty years where she developed a love for the ocean and boating.

After moving to Colorado, Beverley became very active in volunteering for

community nonprofit thrift stores in Estes Park and also volunteered at Rocky Mountain National Park. Beverley loved to hike in the park and had a great appreciation for nature and for the flora and fauna of the park. Beverley loved to view the hummingbirds, the elk and the mountains from her condo in Estes Park.

Beverley loved to cook and prepared everything from scratch. She loved to share her wonderful dishes with her friends and family. Beverley was a loving, caring and generous person with a great spirit and she will be missed by all who had the good fortune to know her.

Beverley is survived by her husband, Ed Ray, her brother, Don Baker of Asheville, NC and her brother, Dan Baker of Jensen Beach, FL; as well as several cousins.

A celebration of Beverley’s life will be held in Estes Park at a future date.
