oped an extensive, detailed COVID-19 Action Plan for Equestrian Events. The plan was approved by the County and in July we were awarded a variance that allowed us to safely hold the Colorado Hunter Jumper Association Shows, the Ranch Horse competition, the Estes Park Dressage Show, the Colorado Regulators mounted shooting competition, and the Senior Pro Rodeo at the Events Complex. We also were able to work within the County guidelines to provide a safe venue for the Vizsla Club of America national dog show as well as a number of small, private weddings at the O'Connor Pavilion.

Additionally, we were pleased to be

able to safely host a number of other outdoor events including, the Estes Valley Farmers Market each Thursday at the Visitor Center, as well as the weekly Monday Artisans Market at George Hix Riverside Plaza.

The beloved annual Catch the Glow Parade, which usually kicks off the holiday season the Friday of Thanksgiving weekend, presented unique challenges. We could not get County approval to hold the traditional annual parade through downtown Estes Park it would have unsafely gathered too many people into the downtown area.

We could only hold an event where people would be safely distanced in their own private vehicles. So we created the drive-through Catch the Glow Festival of Lights to be a COVID “zero contact” event. Following right on the

heels of the evacuation of the entire town (and nearly all of our staff) due to the Cameron Peak and East Troublesome wildfires, we had to work quickly to adapt this event and get everything built and in place.

over two weekends. Having never presented an event like this before, we consider that a tremendous success, and we are delighted that so many enjoyed it.

Given the ongoing pandemic, what lies ahead in 2021 remains uncertain, but we will continue to evaluate each upcoming event to determine what we can offer with the safety of our residents (and our guests) in mind. Here is where we stand with events that typically occur during the first half of each year.

Other logistical challenges for the festival included shipping delays caused when deliveries were halted, delayed, or even permanently lost due to the wildfire evacuations and closures.

On December 29 at 9:21 p.m. police were called to a disturbance in the 1300 block of Manford Ave. On scene they arrested a 22 year old female from Estes Park who was wanted on a warrant out of EPPD for third degree assault and domes-

tic violence. She was transported the to the Larimer County Jail on the warrant and given a new charge of violation of a restraining order.

In the same case, a 24 year old male from Estes Park was arrested and transported to the Larimer County Jail for violation of a restraining order.

EVFPD firefighters generally respond to medical calls in their personal vehicles, allowing for a faster response. On other incidents, firefighters respond to a fire station to respond in department apparatus with specialized equipment.

During the week of December 27, the Estes Valley Fire Protection District (EVFPD) responded to 11 calls for service. This included:

2020 was a tough year for all, but being able to get outside on a bicycle has been a savior for many of us. While many of our formal events and trail building days were cancelled, cycling remains an outlet that has kept many of us sane. The Stanley Park Bike Park was used heavily this year by locals, visitors, our Middle School Mountain Bike Club and the High School Mountain Bike Team.

As we look ahead to 2021, we are hopeful we will have our Bike to Work Day as well as the popular Bike Parade. We are also planning several trail building days on our Crosier Trail system.

By: Rita DuChateau What 2021 needs is a Duck Race, a sure sign that things are returning to normal in Estes Park. And the Rotary Club of Estes Park is ready and excited to deliver just that on Saturday, May 1, but before the ducks can swim they need participating organizations to paddle for.

So, a loud quack has gone out to all Estes Valley nonprofit charities or organizations that would like to share the proceeds of the 2021 Rotary Duck Race Festival. Now’s the time to step up, ask your members if they will sell Duck Adoptions, and submit paperwork for consideration by the Rotary Duck Race Festival organizations committee.

Letters have been sent to many potential participating organizations, according to Larry Williams, Rotary Duck Race Festival organizations committee chairman. Groups that have not received letters are encouraged to submit an application for consideration. Friday, Jan. 15 is the deadline for organizations to respond.

“We encourage nonprofit charities and organizations to complete the application soon, so we can announce our flock of participating organizations and they can begin sales,” Williams said. “The Rotary Duck Race Festival Committee will decide in March whether it will be a live or virtual event, but we promise it will be fun for all. ” Once nonprofit charities and organizations have been selected as participating organizations, they can launch their Duck Adoption sales campaigns. Sales will be conducted through the Rotary Duck Race Festival website and Facebook page. No paper adoptions are planned for the 2021 Duck Race due to current COVID-19 safety measures that are in place to safeguard community health. The Rotary Duck Race Festival committee encourages participating organizations to use

their websites, social media and email to extend their sales reach beyond the local community. In 2020, 67 participating organizations sold 5,721 Duck Adoptions for an event that pivoted from inperson to virtual, from May to October due to the ongoing pandemic. The organizations received $96,577 from the race. Beneficiaries receive $19 from every duck adopted.

Organizations will be selected for the 2021 Duck Race Festival based on the following criteria: 1. Previous adherence to expectations of being involved in the Duck Race.

2. Local presence and benefit to the local community. Organizations and associations may either hold a valid 501(c) 3 or 501(c) 4 tax status with the US Internal Revenue Service or are deemed to benefit the local community.

3. Willingness to sell a minimum of $400 in Duck Adoptions. This will not apply to participating organizations in the 2021 Duck Race that also participated in 2020.

“We hope to hear from new organizations as well as those that have been helped by the race in the past 32 years,” said Williams. “The Duck Race Festival is a great community event, and being part of it can be fun and profitable for our participating organizations. Working together, we can make 2021 a record year for our non-profit charities and organizations!”

We’re definitely into January now. The holiday decorations are put away, our resolutions are no longer resolute, and we’ve completely worn out the phrase, “Happy New Year! It can’t get any worse than last year.”

Talk of the town these days is the COVID vaccine. Some people have already gotten their shot. I’ve put it out of my mind because I’m so far down on the priority list, I’ll be shoveling next winter’s snow before it’s my turn.

While everyone else is talking about

(When I asked one cookie lady in early December, she spoke into her walkie talkie, waited, then told me, “They’ll be here any day.” My heart skipped a beat.)

Today I learned the truth. I was scanning the vast variety of mass-manufac-

But it’s not what you think—I’m not having withdrawals from a Christmas cookie overdose. I’m thinking about Mallomars. A Mallomar is a cookie made of a gooey marshmallow sitting on a graham cracker base; the whole thing coated in chocolate. It’s like a s’more without the campfire. Ever since I learned about these cult cookies I’ve been obsessed with them. I—must— try—one.

I wonder how it is that these popular biscuits, first produced more than 100 years ago, fly off the shelf as soon as they’re stocked yet I’d never heard of them until a few months ago. (Perhaps it is because more than 70% of Mallomars are sold in the New York metropolitan area.) Once I knew they existed though, I couldn’t get them out of my mind. Mallomars are a seasonal cookie, only available in the cooler winter months because they tend to melt during transport in the heat of summer. That’s what Nabisco says.

Right. Pharmaceutical companies are delivering life-saving vaccines to people all over the world at 100 degrees below zero but Nabisco can only ship Mallomars in late autumn and winter because the rest of the months are too warm? I say, “Not bloody likely,” to quote Princess Anne when someone tried to kidnap her in 1974.

Here’s my theory: remember when the only state where you could get Coors beer was Colorado? People would buy the coveted beer, “brewed with pure Rocky Mountain spring water,” by the truckload to take back to their home state. Once the beer was distributed more widely and you could get it everywhere, it lost its mystique. Nabisco doesn’t want the same thing to happen to their Mallomars.

Since October I’ve been visiting the

tured cookies, looking for the elusive Mallomars (this is January, mind you, so it’s nice and cold—just the way Mallomars like it), when I spotted a woman with the Oreos logo on her shirt, stocking the cookie shelves.

“Excuse me,” I said, oozing marshmallowy politeness. “Do you know when they’ll be getting their Mallomars at this store?”

“Oh, this store doesn’t carry them. But they’re seasonal anyway, so you can only get them in October,” she said.

“I thought you could get them October through March,” I smiled, which she couldn’t see because of my mask.

“They arrive around here in September but they only have a shelf life of about six weeks, so they disappear fast and then that’s it. No more.”

“But…” I wanted to explain to her all about the weather and refrigerated trucks and how Stephen Colbert teased his viewers by eating several Mallomars on his show, but she cut in.

“You’re talking about the ones in the yellow package, right? ” OMG. She works in cookies. Hasn’t she looked at her cookie aisles lately? Almost every package of cookies, from vanilla Oreos to Lorna Doones, is yellow.

“Yes, the yellow package,” I said oh-sosweetly, getting mask fuzz in my mouth.

“Yeah. In my 24 years of working for Nabisco, I’ve never seen Mallomars after October,” she said. “I’m sorry,” she said, as if she were personally responsible for my Mallomars deprivation.

Now I know. I have to wait until next fall for my Mallomars. Maybe by then I’ll have gotten the vaccine.

Drop Off Christmas Trees Now Through January 22 At The Fairgrounds The Town of Estes Park's free Christmas tree drop-off site is open to local residents 8 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, now through January 22. The drop-off will be located at the east entrance of the Fairgrounds off Community Drive; follow the signs to the fenced drop-off location. Trees must be stripped of ornaments, tinsel and other decorations. No wreaths, garland, artificial trees or tree stands will be accepted. Trees must be dropped during the specified hours in the identified area. Dropping trees after hours or in other locations at the Fairgrounds

will be considered illegal dumping and may be subject to a fine. This service is free of charge to local residents.

Estes Park Woman’s Club Zoom Talk To Be Held On January 13

Diane Shriver will give a Zoom talk to the Estes Park Woman’s Club about her “Experiences of Being a Midwife” on January 13, 2021 at 12:00 p.m. Diane has been a nurse for 38 years and a mid-wife for 25 years in both clinic and hospital settings. She has practiced in four states during her extensive and exciting career caring for women and babies.

After working as a Labor and Delivery Nurse for 13 years in several states, her move to Houston coincided with the opening of the Baylor College of Medicine School of Nurse Midwifery in 1985.

Taking Action To Prevent Bird Deaths From Fishing Line

EVICS To Reconstruct Programs By: Yarem Jasso

As we start of the new year, Estes Valley Investment in Childhood Success (EVICS) has our eyes on the future. As EVICS continues to grow we have begun to reconstruct our programs and services while keeping focused on our mission, to strengthen and support children and families in the early years.

This year, I had the privilege of joining EVICS as the new Family Program Coordinator. With this position, I have had the opportunity to learn and grow while serving the families of Estes Park. To further our mission, my role in EVICS will now grow, too. In January, I will begin serving our families as an Early Childhood/Family Navigator.

I will be working side by side with our current Navigator, Daniela Serrano, to enable EVICS to provide bilingual family resource services Monday

through Friday. Together, we will seek and share resources that will help in meeting the needs of families.

Starting this month, EVICS will be adding new programs that we will host monthly for our community. A Parents Group will to be offered the first week of the month. Family Night will continue to be on the second Thursday of the month. Networking Night for our childcare and preschool providers will continue to be on the third Thursday of the month. EVICS will be introducing our new Mothers Group during the fourth week of the month.

February will be an exciting time as we will hold our annual fundraising event (postponed from December 2020) on February 5th! The EVICS 2021 Art Gala. Share the Love Silent Auction and Charcuterie Party to Go! More details to come!

While walking at Lake Estes, I saw an interesting sight – a man on a stepladder, which was being held by a woman while he was attempting to pull something from a limb of a tall tree. I walked over to them, and asked if he was a fisherman, thinking he was trying to pull a favorite lure or fly out of the tree. He answered that he was not, but he was a birder and was trying to protect birds by retrieving fishing line from the tree. As I took a closer look, I saw there was fishing line on many of the branches, no doubt because the tree hangs over the Big Thompson, and its branches ensnare the line of fishers.

Marc explained that he and Diana were inspired to take action after rescuing a crow at the lake that had become entangled in fishing line. They want to do what they can to prevent deaths and injuries to birds from fishing line.

Having also rescued birds that have been entangled in fishing line, I was thankful for their actions, as well as that of others who do what they can to remove fishing line and gear from the area. These efforts can save the lives of some of the thousands of birds that are killed every year in this country due to fishing line. Thank you, Marc & Diana!

The Story Of Julia Maffitt Lamy

Julia Maffitt Lamy was born in St. Louis on April 9, 1937, the daughter of Julia Walsh Lamy and Charles S. Lamy, who were long time summer residents of Estes Park.

Julia received her master’s degree in Occupational Therapy from Washington University in St. Louis and pursued a career for the next 30 years. She also was actively involved in her community of St. Louis. Once she became a permanent resident of Estes Park, she continued her community service, including involvement with the Estes Valley Victim Advocates, Community

Foundation of Northern Colorado, Salud, and Crossroads Ministries.

In 1996, to prevent a 0.69-acre lot from being developed for commercial use, Judy purchased it and began Mrs. Walsh’s Garden named for her grandmother, Mrs. Winifred Walsh. The land was donated to the town in 2017 and is now maintained by the Town’s Parks Division with funds provided through an endowment established by Lamy. The garden has become an easily accessible resource to learn about plants native to this area of the Rocky Mountains and is open to the public daily from dawn to dusk.

The Story Of Ann Marie Wilcocks Ann was born in Buffalo, NY and moved to Colorado with her husband in 1984. She and her family moved to Estes Park in 1998. She and her husband have two adult children, both of whom attended Estes Park schools.

One of her first efforts upon moving to Estes Park was to head a grassroots effort to pass a bond and a tax override for the school district. Everyone she met said that it couldn’t be done and wouldn’t pass in Estes Park. Well, Ann continued to lead this effort and it passed, benefiting the local schools greatly.

Since that effort, Ann has been involved with helping many positive accomplishments in Town. Ann has sponsored and/or directly hosted over 200 free Art and Music Events in our

Town over the years, significantly adding to our local cultural environment. Ann is also the President of Earthwood Artisans and Earthwood Collections, two art galleries in Estes Park that feature over 250 local and national Artists. She has run these businesses in downtown and beyond for over 20 years.

These galleries are now considered among the top 10 galleries for American Art in the USA. She recently served as a Board member of the Estes Park Partners for Commerce, which is the precursor to the current Estes Park Chamber of Commerce. Ann continues to be a positive force in the Estes Valley, running her galleries and sponsoring nice local things such as local art and music events.

“DO YOU WANT TO GET WELL?”

How ludicrous it would be to ask a person suffering from Covid-19 that question! In fact, it’s a strange question to ask anyone suffering from any debilitating disease or sickness, and yet, it’s a question that Jesus posed to a man who had been paralyzed for 38 years. The story is told in John 5 in the Bible. I refer to it this week because it has a very contemporary application, as we begin this New Year. It is a given that most people currently hospitalized for the pandemic, would give it a resounding ‘Yes!’. However, there are others who might take some time to make a decision, and others who would, if honest, say ‘No, I’ll keep doing what I’m doing. I don’t want to make any changes or get better.’ For example, we hear of people who lost jobs and were given special benefits from the ‘Stimulus Package’ who, when their jobs opened up again, said, “No thanks! I like what I have now.” We hear of people who have been working remotely from their homes, who have decided they don’t want to go back to the workplace setting. We hear of children that are very content with remote learning, etc. To these and many others, there is an unwillingness for change, because it would involve sacrifices on their part.

“Do you want to get better?” is also the question faced as people consider the changes that New Year’s Resolutions involve. As we stated last week, our ‘intentions’ will be dictated often, by our answer to that question. Do I want to ‘get better’ enough to cause me to change my exercise habits? Or change the way I spend my leisure time? Or change my eating, drinking, or drugging practices? Many of the things that many of us have been doing in the past have not been in our best interest. We need to ask ourselves the question: “How’s that working for me?” And if the answer suggests that changes need to be made, we need to take whatever steps are necessary ‘to get better’.

When we consider how things are going in our relationships…our marriage, our parent-child relationships…”Do we want to get well?” I spent a couple of hours this week on the phone, counseling with a woman from another state, whose marriage is close to ending. Despite all of her efforts to make it work, she has a husband who suffers from PTSD and, while ‘he wants to get better’, he refuses to get the help needed, ‘to make it better’, choosing rather to blame her, life, etc. I’m sure that her story is not unique, especially in this time when domestic violence and divorces are at a high level, due in part to the pandemic and isolations forced upon us. If that should be something you sense in yours or another’s relationship, be sure to take steps to get help for that situation. If you don’t have other resources, feel free to do like this woman did and give me a call. (720530-6446) My Master’s Degree is in Marital and Family counseling, help is free and we can ‘put our heads together (on the phone) and arrive at some things to help.

But it all begins with the answer to that question: “Do you want to get better?” A riddle circulated around the University of Nebraska Counseling Department, being posed to every student: “How many psychologists does it take to change a light bulb?” The answer, “One…but the bulb has got to want to be changed!” The joke is silly, the reality is not. A change in behavior of any kind, can only result when we ‘want to be changed’ and when will work to make the sacrifices needed to bring about the desired change.

The man in the Bible account was willing to follow the Lord’s direction: “Rise, take up your mat, and walk”. Because of his desire to change, and his willingness to believe it possible, and act, things became different, after 38 years. Obviously, no miracles are being offered in my words, but wonderful things can happen when we follow the same ‘belief’, ‘desire’, and ‘action’ displayed in that incident. “Do you want to get better?”

It is okay if you are not feeling okay right now. If you are stressed, like I am, be stressed. If you are beyond tired, be beyond tired. If 2020 was more than you could handle, time to let it go. I have a small saying taped to my computer that I kind of live my life by. It says: “Show up. Pay attention. Do your best. Let go.” I think we’ve all been showing up, paying attention and doing our very best for the past year. So now it’s 2021 and time to let go. If you decided to let go, what would you say to yourself? Perhaps something like, “I can’t control everything as much as I want. The sun goes up and down without me telling it to. The snow flies and the roads get bad whether I want it them to or not. Summer is gone and no amount of wishing is going to make it otherwise.” And there it is. Winter.

My least favorite time of the year when I already struggle with staying cheerful and thankful.

This time of year is always hard for me. I dislike being cold. A lot. I actually grieve the end of summer and the beauty of the warm and golden days of Colorado autumn. The festive holidays go by so fast and only the cold, dark, long winter months are ahead of us.

Every single year for my whole life, it seems, I complain about daylight savings time when it comes around. Why do we put ourselves through this outdated program created for farmers every year? I have nothing against farmers. As a matter of fact, people who grow fruits and vegetables are vital for this vegan. It is simply depressing when the dark comes on so quickly and the day is done.

When I went back to college at age 30, it was at the Manhattan campus of Fordham University near Columbus Circle. They had a program for returning, adult students tailored especially for working stiffs like me. Tuesdays and Thursdays after work and on weekends I would take an incredibly crowded uptown bus and then an equally crowded crosstown bus to school. The classes were three hours and I’d get out at about 9:15 at night and would walk to the bus stop a couple of blocks away.

Often, I’d be shivering and waiting for the bus on West 57th Street for a half an hour or more with the damp wind blowing off the Hudson River.

In 1980 most women still wore dresses to work. I’d be standing there at the bus stop shivering and trying to keep warm in the thin plastic enclosure wearing knee-high leather boots over tights and a midi-length navy wool coat. Hats were a no-no because who wants “hat head.” At this time of the year I always remember that bus stop and always say to myself, at least there’s no humidity in Colorado. But this past year? The year 2020 seems especially difficult to find those things that make winter tolerable. The virus seems to have permanently moved in and I’m just tired of it all.

This morning I took my dog, Ziggy for his early morning walk. I’m like the mail person in that way, rain or shine, snow or wind – the dog gets his walk.

(Unless it’s wind – can’t abide that). I pulled on leggings, jeans, a long sleeve T-shirt, thick sweatshirt, hiking boots with heavy wool socks, down jacket, knitted hat, scarf and gloves. “I will not be cold on this walk,” I said to myself still trying to control things, “and neither will Ziggy” as I pushed the squirming 13-pound terrier into a pink and purple jacket left over from Skye, my previous girl dog. Zigs didn’t like it. He is a rescue dog and probably never wore a jacket in his short, little life.

Before we were even out of the driveway, for about the first five minutes of the walk, he rolled around, pushing his head into the snow and dirt trying to get that jacket off and then, finally, he settled in and seemed to forget about it. Until, that is, we got home and he started the rolling again, this time back in the house, around on the floor, the couch, the bed until I pulled the stupid jacket off him. It reminded me of a story of a friend of mine when she brought her second child home from the hospital. After talking about the baby for months, a new little sister for three-year-old Robert, she and her husband were sure older brother would just love his new sibling. They had Robert sit on the couch and then, tenderly laid the tiny baby across his lap. All was peaceful for about two seconds when he looked down at the baby and started wailing loudly, “Get it off me! Get it off me!” That’s how Ziggy was acting. He had no control over that jacket any more than I had control over the weather.

This year I have decided to make friends with winter once again. Wear warm clothes - even hats and always gloves. I accept I am not okay with the cold, but also accept that winter is something out of my control. I am also going to take my own advice: I am not okay and that’s okay. I am stressed and put up my Christmas tree later than I ever have before. Not the day after Thanksgiving, but December 15th. And that’s okay. I didn’t wrap presents until the day before they had to be taken to the grandkids. And that’s okay too. I showed up. I am grieving the normalcy of past years and the fact that 2020 was very difficult. I’m paying attention. I’m going to give myself permission to be gentle and loving with myself. To let go and eat more chocolate. What choice do I have? Find the good and let go, Mary.

It’s 2021 and all good things in this New Year are possible.

We can always depend on the good people of Estes Park looking out for each other as well as the brilliant Colorado blue skies and the amazing sunrises and sunsets. And hopefully, this year, we will see the eradication of the COVID 19 virus.

Cervical Health Awareness Month brings an opportunity to raise awareness about cervical cancer and other diseases that can lead to cervical cancer, such as HPV (human papillomavirus). HPV is a very common sexually transmitted disease that causes the majority of cervical cancer cases, but often goes undiagnosed.

Currently, about 79 million Americans have HPV, and each year, more than 11,000 women in the United States are diagnosed with cervical cancer.

Who gets cervical cancer?

Cervical cancer is often diagnosed in young to middle-aged women. According to the National Cancer Institute: • The average age of a woman diagnosed with cervical cancer is 50 years old.

• More than one-third of new cervical cancer diagnoses are in women between 20 and 44 years old.

• About 80 percent of all cervical cancer diagnoses are in women younger than 65 years old.

Cervical cancer symptoms may not be present in the early stages of the disease. When symptoms do develop, they may include:

• Vaginal bleeding between periods or after intercourse.

• Post-menopausal vaginal bleeding.

• Vaginal discharge.

• Pain in the pelvis.

The good news: • The HPV vaccine (shots) can prevent HPV. • Cervical cancer can often be prevented with regular screening tests and follow-up care.

News From The Art Center Of Estes Park NEW EXHIBIT OPENING: “Meet The New Artists” featuring Lydia Pottoff, John Long, and Cheryl Gratias – January 8 The first exhibit of every year, the Art Center features the artist members who joined the Art Center membership the previous year. This year we are celebrating three very talented artists and their variety of media: pastel, acrylic and watercolor.

Lydia Pottoff, originally from Maryland, moved to Colorado in 1973 to attend Metropolitan State University where she earned a BA in fine art and graphic design. To pursue her passion of creating a more personal vision, pastels were a natural choice since they combined her love of drawing and color.

Coming from a family of artists and growing up in Michigan, John Long trained as a photographer, film maker, poet and printer but his professional career was in education. His work is in abstract and text-based painting with acrylics as well as abstract landscapes and calligraphy with Japanese ink.

“I am at heart both an artist and a scientist,” shares Cheryl Gratias. “As such, I’ve become a careful observer of the world around me and am drawn to trying new experiments in my approach to creativity. I am inspired by the way watercolor can uniquely embody light, color, energy and life.”

Letters From Restorative Justice Participants

Below are two letters to the editor (community) from some Restorative Justice participants. These letters resulted from the participants' Restorative Justice Community Group Conference, and were agreed upon as contract item that would help repair harm caused by their actions.

As the community was also impacted by these actions, we hope these letters help to repair harm, restore community and create a better understanding of what these individuals will do to make better choices in the future.

Letter #1 Dear Community of Estes Park, I’m writing this letter to personally apologize to our community for my mistake. Earlier this summer I got into a physical altercation with another individual. I know even though you weren’t my direct victims you were indirect ones. I realize I could have made you and your families feel unsafe because Estes Park is a very calm community. An incident like this is something that does not normally happen. If people were nearby when the fight was happening they could have gotten hurt too. Our actions also set the wrong example for children and other people around me. I will do my absolute best to make sure I don’t make the same mistake again.

Through this whole process I’ve gotten to know myself more thanks to the restorative justice program and though I didn’t intend to get to know this part of me I did. I’ve learned some things since this incident to help myself to potentially avoid another situation like this in the future, including how to control my emotions and go about things in a more mature calm and collected manner.

Restorative Justice has helped me understand that a moment of impulse could not only greatly affect me but also my community and anyone in our community. I would like to once again apologize for harming our community and I look forward to now being positively involved with my community by setting a good example. I live here and I was born here and now I want to get to know the community better. I will do my best not to harm it.

RJ participant Letter #2 Dear Community of Estes Park, When people hear about restorative justice, it has a stereotype that it's something

to do with bad people, but they don't know what stands behind restorative justice. In the summer, I got into an altercation that caused me to get into some trouble, and when appearing in court, I had the option to complete restorative justice rather than facing charges. This was an amazing opportunity that I was able to go through. At the beginning of the process, you don't know what you're getting into, but thankfully the Estes Valley RJ program has an amazing staff, and it was very well explained to my peers and me. After the first meeting, I agreed to go through the RJ community group conference process, which was a great choice.

Through the program, I have met incredible people in our community and have interacted with the community more. I completed some community service hours at a ranch in Allen's Park and learned many new things about ranch life. Not only has RJ brought me the opportunity to meet such incredible people, but it also was able to open my eyes and see the harm that was caused by the incident that I was a part of.

Although the community was not directly physically harmed (during an altercation that I was a part of), I now realize that it was damaged in many other ways through my actions. When incidents like these happen, the community feels unsafe because they don’t know whether they are in danger or not. They could second guess the safety of their neighborhood because it happened in their own neighborhood. Although we are young and make mistakes, we can't go through the world, thinking there are no consequences for our choices. My actions were foolish and caused harm towards myself, the victim, and the community.

Through RJ, I have developed some methods to help keep me from committing the same mistakes. When you are angry, stop and think to yourself, "Is this worth the trouble?” Usually, when you stop to rationalize what you're about to do, you cause yourself to think about it twice. Another method is to count to 10 to control your anger or your thoughts.

By counting to ten, you can gather yourself and remain calm rather than exploding and doing something you may regret.

There are many more methods we could discuss, but that'd take up my limit. Just remember to stop and breathe, and those two steps may help you get out of a challenging situation.

Steven Howard Boles Steven Howard Boles passed away on December 17, 2020 at Greenridge Place Memory Care Community in Westminster, Colorado. His wife and children were with him.

Steve was born Howard Whitt Jr., on February 18, 1939, in Joplin Missouri. His biological family of 9 children was dissolved by a Wyandotte County, Kansas, court order in May, 1945. He was admitted to two different orphanages. Under foster care/adoption arrangement he became Danny Cottrell, then Howard Baldwin, then for a time he lived with a social worker’s family until he was adopted in 1950 by Raymond and Vernetta Boles of Liberal, Kansas. At that time he was given the name Steven Howard Boles.

By 1952, Steve had attended eight schools. He lived and worked on the Boles family farm until he finished high school at age 17. He excelled in school, always at the top of his class.

He entered enthusiastically into clubs and organizations, church groups, and school activities. A born leader, friendly, and capable he was quickly chosen the leader or president of any group.

Following graduation, as valedictorian of his class, Steve attended Duke University in Durham, North Carolina for two years. While there he belonged to Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity and was a member of the Drill Team of the Air Force ROTC. He regularly attended church services at the beautiful Duke Chapel.

Preparing to become a minister he transferred to a Methodist College, Southwestern College in Winfield, Kansas, where he finished his BA degree. In addition to his studies, he was appointed student minister of Corbin Methodist Church. He married Estelle Malin who was also a student at Southwestern. They were warmly welcomed to the Corbin community where they lived almost three years. Their sons, Howard and Jeff, were born while living and working in Corbin.

To continue his education in seminary, Steve and his family moved to Denver, Colorado, where he attended the Iliff School of Theology. During the three-year program there he served as student assistant minister in Methodist churches in the area. Their daughter, Sara, was born during that time period.

Steve received his Master of Theology degree from Iliff, enrolled in graduate school at the University of Colorado, and the family moved to Boulder. Having earned the Elizabeth Iliff Warren Fellowship, and aided by a two-year

NDEA Fellowship, he began work on the PhD program in Philosophy. Steve completed the course work and language requirements of the program in two years.

As he began work on his dissertation, his academic work came to an abrupt halt with the deaths of his adopted family, Raymond, Vernetta, and Shirley Boles, in a car accident. Estate, farm, and business matters necessitated a move back to the farm in Kansas. When things were somewhat settled, Steve and Estelle and children moved back to Colorado.

Seeking the stability of a hometown environment, they moved to Estes Park in 1970, where Steve was in business, Estelle was a teacher in the elementary school, and their children grew up.

Steve worked for many years with clients in life insurance, securities, and real estate, forming real estate limited partnerships. He had his own real estate office for a number of years, and served a term as president of the Estes Park Board of Realtors. He was a Rotarian for several years, and involved in numerous community activities.

Steve was blessed with qualities which stood him in good stead all his life: a superior intellect with a great curiosity about everything, an innate sense of right and wrong, and a keen sense of humor.

Although his early years had been very difficult, he wasted no time being angry or feeling sorry for himself. Instead he was always grateful for the opportunities he has had.

Throughout the years, he remembered and dreamed of finding his birth family, and in his middle years that hope became a reality. In an amazing set of circumstances, he was able to locate and spend time with his siblings.

Many questions were answered and life had come full circle. In that quest, however, his great regret was never again getting to meet his birth parents.

From early years his passion, and solace, was reading. Seldom without a book, he also loved good music and beautiful art. In the only home that was ever really his, he took great interest in re-modeling and making it his own. He spent much time and effort decorating and furnishing it. And, of course his haven, his favorite room, was his “library” where he had his books, could turn up the volume on the music, watch his beloved Duke Blue Devils basketball games and Denver Broncos football games, and read to his heart’s content! The most important and meaningful part of Steve’s life was his own family.

His wife, Estelle, was the love of his life.

He dearly loved his three children, Howard, Jeff, and Sara. He was interested in every aspect of their lives, supportive of all their accomplishments, and enormously proud of the fine, honorable adults they became as they grew up, married and established their own homes and families. Having grandchildren as well, gave him much pleasure.

He enjoyed watching their progress, getting to see them grow up and make their way in life. And becoming a greatgrandparent was pure joy! He felt blessed to have lived long enough to have great-grandchildren in his life.

Steve was filled with goodness, an honorable man, kind and generous. His was

a good life—a life well- lived. He will be greatly missed by all who loved him.

Steve is survived by his wife, Estelle, and their three children: Howard Boles (Mary), Jeff Boles (Julie), and Sara Steele (Jeff). Surviving also are his grandchildren: Erica Brookhart (Brent), Tyler Boles (Ronna), Brandon Boles, Courtney Steele, Justin Boles, and Opal Hetherington. Great-grandchildren surviving are Tucker Boles, Paige Boles, and Henry Brookhart.

A Celebration of Life service for Steve will be held at a later date.

Memorial donations in honor of Steve may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or a charity of choice, in care of Allnutt Funeral Services, 1302 Graves Avenue, Estes Park, Colorado 80517.

Frank Ernest Jimenez Frank Ernest Jimenez departed us on The Christmas Star 12/22/2020.

He was with his partner of 25 years Florence Johnson in his own home in Estes Park where he had lived. He was born to Frank and Marguerite Jimenez February 15th, 1940 in Oklahoma City, OK. He worked freight docks, and had a very successful moving business while raising five children with former wife Laura Dalton. In 1977 Frank moved his family to Estes Park and opened The Emporium on Elkhorn Ave. They enjoyed their time as small business owners shopping markets around the nation to find unique and unusual gifts for the store. For the last 30 years Frank operated a busy lawn care service around the Estes Valley. He was well respected for his hard work and beautiful results. 14 years of that while

undergoing aggressive cancer treatment. He was truly an Iron Man. Frank is preceded in death by his parents and two siblings, his brother Rudy Jimenez and sister Patricia Brooks both of Oklahoma City both having passed in 2020 and granddaughter Alexandra Nicole. Frank is survived by his brother Matt (Rose) son Tony Jimenez, grandsons Tony and Journey, Daughter Susan Pedersen (Chris) grandson CJ, son Mark Cross (Sandra) grandchildren Blake and Alyssa, son Jason (Dorothy) son Joel and many nieces and nephews he adored. In lieu of flowers Frank would prefer you took a drive through his beloved Rocky Mountain National Park and stop and take in the beauty, or watch college football. Go Sooners!

Danford Loe Hoben Danford Loe Hoben was born March 2 1936 in Wichita, Kansas to Inez Wilkason Hoben and Edward C. Hoben.

During WWll Dan lived with his parents in Holly, Colorado where his father managed a bank. The war was a vivid part of his young life.

He recalled watching trains roll through Holly carrying military tanks, he participated in scrap metal drives, knew what the Gold Stars in the windows of some homes meant. He remembered the Japanese from the interment camp coming to Holly to buy things and German prisoners of war sitting on the roof of the Holly Sugar plant singing German songs some evenings.

After the war his family moved back to Wichita. All through Dan’s high school years he had two paper routes.

He graduated from Wichita State University. After he graduated from

Washburn Law School in Topeka, Kansas in 1961 he received a direct commission as a First Lieutenant in The Judge Advocate General Department of the U. S. Air Force.

In November 1962, during the Cuban Missile Crisis, he and Beverley Zoe Perkins were married at Davis-Monthan AFB, Tucson, Arizona.

Dan served in the U. S. Air Force for 24 years and retired at the rank of Lt. Colonel. The most unusual tour of duty of his career was serving as a circuit judge based in Bangkok, Thailand. He traveled to hear cases at USAF Bases in The Philippines, Guam, Okinawa as well as in Thailand.

Dan and Beverley moved to Estes Park in 1990. After surviving Covid 19 he died several weeks later on December 28, 2020 at the Medical Center of the Rockies, Loveland, Colorado. He is survived by his wife, Beverley. Please visit www.allnuttestespark.com to leave a message.

In Loving Remembrance Of JoAnn Carolyn Chudomelka Nuetzman JoAnn Carolyn Chudomelka Nuetzman of Estes Park, Colorado passed to join her loving husband, Raymond, on Monday, December 28, 2020 at the age of 86 years. Jo, affectionately known as Nana, was a modern day Renaissance woman due to her love of travel and history, fun fashion sense, and adventurous nature. She pursued a number of interesting careers and was a life-long learner.

JoAnn was born on May 8th, 1934 in Omaha, Nebraska to Jerome Albert Sr. and Anna Carolyn (Nepodal) Chudomelka and was the youngest of three children with brothers Jerome Albert Jr. and Richard. Jo was a graduate of Schuyler High School and attended St. Catherine’s Nurses Training in Omaha, Nebraska. She was proud to say that she was a minister’s wife, of Czech heritage, and that she was a nurse. She did private nursing care in Colorado, worked as a caregiver at nursing homes, was a church camp nurse, and traveled with college groups to Europe as a tour group nurse.

JoAnn met her future husband, Ray, while singing in the church choir in Schuyler. She married her handsome lay preacher on October 27, 1953.

They were married for 61 years until his passing in 2014. The couple moved to Colorado Springs the next year to serve St. Paul’s Methodist Church while Ray attended Iliff School of Theology in Denver.

The family moved back to Nebraska to serve the St. Edward Methodist Church in 1957 for five years before moving to Seward, Nebraska in 1962, staying for 11 years. During their time in Seward, Jo worked as a nurse, then as the High School Secretary for Concordia High School. She then became the Psychology Department secretary at Concordia Teachers College. In 1973, the family moved to Kearney, Nebraska where Jo was the assistant to the Graduate Dean and then the assistant to the Art Department Dean at Kearney State College for many years.

The couple moved to Estes Park, Colorado in 1991 where in semi-retirement they enjoyed their beautiful Rocky Mountains and being near nature. Jo enjoyed comforting people at the Allnutt Funeral Home and working for the Nature Association in RMNP. She took pride in showing her knowledge of nature and historical facts while visiting with people from

all over the world.

She and Ray loved to travel together, whether throughout North America or across the sea to Europe. Jo always knew her history and researched prior to each trip, bringing home beautiful souvenirs that adorned their home and as presents for loved ones. Jo was a creative person who expressed herself through fashion and was a good seamstress. She enjoyed doing projects, reading, and attending Bible Study and Church Fellowship in Estes.

JoAnn always encouraged and supported her two girls academically and in the arts. She told them frequently how proud she was of them and was also proud of her two grandchildren.

She treated her son-in-laws as sons.

Preceding her to her heavenly home were her beloved husband Raymond E. Nuetzman, her parents, parents-inlaw, two brothers, and many relatives and special friends. We are Blessed to be her children and grandchildren.

Thank you Mama for all you have done for us and YES, you have had a wonderful life! You will forever be in our hearts. Until we meet again.
