Businesses can go through the Application Process for the voluntary Level Up Program by following these steps: Complete the online application at www.larimer.org/health/ communicable-disease/coronaviruscovid-19/level-program.

This application requires a COVID-19 Prevention Plan and Outbreak Plan for each business and/or business location.

The LCDHE will review applications and initiate inspections The Level Up Administrative Review Committee then reviews and certifies the business contingent upon a successful onsite inspection On-site inspection and certification by Public Health Representative.

It is important to note that the Level Up Program is contingent upon keeping Larimer County COVID-19 numbers at a two-week sustained decline in cases, positivity percentage and hospitalizations. The community is being asked to continue to do its part and help #KeepNoCoOpen.

Community And Family Advisory Board Seeks Community Input At their last meeting, the Estes Park Town Board of Trustees approved a recommendation from the Family Advisory Board to change the name of the group to the "Community and Family Advisory Board." This change was made in recognition of the advisory board's interests in broadening their focus to include issues of importance to all members of the community and not just people with children, which "family" is often understood to mean. Additionally, many issues impacting families are those that impact the broader community as well. The Community and Family Advisory Board's hope is to provide information and recommendations to the Town Board that will help inform their policy and decision-making by highlighting the interests and needs of families in the com-

munity and of the community as a whole.

Along with the new name and broader scope comes the need to determine what interests, needs, and resource gaps currently exist in the community. As the Community and Family Advisory Board prepares to establish its new Focus Areas for 2021, the board would like to better understand the needs and challenges of the community. On November 23 at 11:16 p.m. police were called to a disturbance in the 100 block of E. Elkhorn Ave. On scene they arrested a 34 year old male from Aurora, CO and charged him with third degree

assault. He was issued a summons and later released from EPPD. On December 24 at 4:45 p.m. a 45 year old transient male was arrested at EPPD, at 170 MacGregor Ave. for a violation of a protection order. He was later transported to the Larimer County Jail.

Now Is The Time For You To Help The Non-Profit Estes Park Women’s Monument Project The monument requirements are complete, the Town Council has unanimously voted to endorse and support this new monument, the Town of Estes Park has donated the awesome downtown land for the monument, prominent local service organizations (like, but not limited to, the Estes Park Women’s Club, the Rotaries, the League of Women Voters, the Estes Park Chamber, VEP, the Fine Arts Guild, The Art Center and the Arts District) are actively supporting this project, and three nationally known sculptors are actively doing research and working on their final proposals that are due at the end of February 2021. Now it’s up to you to make your donation and help us complete the fundraising efforts in a timely manner. Many folks have already made a tax deductible donation in 2020 and plan to donate again in 2021.

The Town of Estes Park's free Christmas tree drop-off site will be open to local residents 8 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, Dec. 28 through Jan. 22, except Dec 31 and Jan. 1 when the Town is closed for observation of the New Year's holiday. The drop-off will be located at the east entrance of the Fairgrounds off Community Drive; follow the signs to the fenced drop-off location. Trees must be stripped of ornaments, tinsel and other decorations. No wreaths, garland, artificial trees or tree stands will be accepted. Trees must be dropped during the specified hours in the identified area.

Dropping trees after hours or in other locations at the Fairgrounds will be considered illegal dumping and may be subject to a fine. This service is free of charge to local resi-

dents.

Salvation Army Wraps Up 2020 Campaign This year’s Red Kettle Campaign is done. It was a tough year and our thanks to everyone who helped. We are not aware of any bell ringer who got frostbite or who was blown over, although there were close calls. Volunteer bell ringers rang for 240 hours over 18 days and many volunteers rang the bell for multiple shifts. In years past, we rang for almost 400 hours and in five locations.

Dollar General was kind enough to let us use their lobby this year and we set up a kettle there instead of at the post office.

The Salvation Army’s brand is “Doing the Most Good, ” and the local Estes Park Extension Unit strives to follow that. Even though the Red Kettles have been put back into storage, you can still mail a check to P. O. Box 172 in Estes Park. Our goal is $40,000 and we will have a report on the total next week.

Most of the year your local Estes Park Extension Unit is a quiet bunch and you probably won’t see us until you need us. This is what we do with the money that we raise. Our most important role is to provide a rapid response to emergencies when requested by the police and fire departments. This is when people need assurance that everything is going to be OK and that others are available to help. The Salvation Army District gives us the authority to provide immediate housing and food assistance for people who are displaced.

We work closely with representatives of the Red Cross and Crossroads Ministry who can provide long-term assistance.

We are fortunate that we only had one call out this year for a family that was displaced by fire. And while the Red Cross was the primary resource this year for relocating people who had to evacuate due to the Cameron Peak fire, the Salvation Army assisted in finding places to stay for essential Town employees who couldn’t evacuate to the valley. Our

thanks to the Quality Inn and Murphy’s Resort for their help.

Other than emergencies, most of our funds are spent helping Crossroads pay for Food Bank purchases, providing rental assistance, and paying for other specific needs including prescriptions and even car repairs. The Salvation Army provides subsidies for Meals on Wheels clients who cannot afford the full $5 meal cost and we have helped Community Corner Café with food bank purchases. We provide vouchers and gift cards to Crisis Advocates and the Estes Park Police Department to give to people for lodging, a tank of gas, or food for people who need assistance when Crossroads is closed. Our Extension Unit sends tenpercent of the money that we raise to the Denver District, but this year the District has already sent back over $6,000 to pay for our Food Bank purchases from a special COVID fund.

The Salvation Army has had an extension unit in Estes Park for over 30 years.

For many years, Randy Skeie and the Rotary Club of Estes Park were the driving forces behind our fund raising efforts. Randy’s dedication came because the Salvation Army helped his brother and we hear similar stories from others who donate. Our Extension Unit board has 14 members who are Estes Valley residents including the directors of Crossroads, Crisis Advocates, and Salud as well as a representative from the police department. We are all volunteers with no office and no paid staff. Our biggest overhead expenses are postage to acknowledge contributions and rental of our Post Office box.

Thank you to the residents of the Estes Valley who have supported our Extension Unit for 30+ years as we continue our efforts to Do the Most Good.

She has earned her varsity letter three times for cheerleading and three academic letters and maintains a 4.12 GPA. She is also a QuestBridge Scholar.

In her spare time she enjoys being a Student Board Representative and Youth Engagement Specialist for LCDHE Travel. She is excited for her next adventure in Nashville, Tennessee!

First Covid-19 Vaccines To Frontline Providers At Estes Park Health On December 23, 2020, at Estes Park Health, we were able to begin the vaccination process against COVID-19.

We are exceedingly happy to have worked with the state of Colorado, received an initial vaccine supply, and created an organized process to provide the vaccine to our frontline providers.

Colorado has a very disciplined process for distribution and providing the vaccine, and EPH is working with Colorado to give the vaccinations according to those rules. Colorado's current plan looks like this: Winter Phase 1A: Highest-risk healthcare workers.

Winter Phase 1B: Moderate-risk health care workers.

Spring Phase 2: Higher-risk individ-

uals and essential workers.

Summer Phase 3: General public.

Estes Park Archives Program This Saturday, January 2 somewhere in the text, how many items would it be necessary to acquire? One thousand? Ten thousand?

Should works by Estes Park authors be included, even when they aren’t writing about Estes Park? Should fictional works be included? What about fictional works where all or part of the action is clearly set in Estes Park or based on an Estes Park landmark or landscape, even though the author doesn’t specifically include the words “Estes Park” (for example, “The Shining” or “Lolita”)?

The author Philip Mechem, who was also an attorney and, at the time, a law professor at the University of Iowa, spent his summers in Estes Park, and the setting maps to the area around the High Drive where his actual cabin was located, although disguised place names were substituted.

Besides being a book “about” Estes Park, “The Columbine Cabin Murders” is actually a fairly entertaining yarn, with an inventive twist even modern showrunners might admire, or steal.

These free programs, modified for the pandemic, are held in the meeting room at 240 Moraine Avenue, and repeat every 20 minutes between 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. Reservations are not required, although you can make one by calling 970-586-4889 if you don’t want to risk waiting outside for a few minutes.

You can also generally avoid the wait by attending later in the afternoon.

Only family members or those sharing the same household are admitted inside at any particular time, and masks are required. If it is cold, you might want to wear a coat, because even when

the heater is on, a back window and the front door are kept open for air circulation.

All are welcome, even first-time visitors to Estes Park, and you don’t need to own a copy of the particular book (or even know anything about it) to participate in the discussion.

Christmas Bird Count To Be Held On January 3rd The RMNP/Estes Park Christmas Bird Count will be held on January 3rd. It begins at 12:01 a.m. and ends at 11:59 p.m. that day. The count is a 15 mile circle centered in the national park. Participants simply count every individual bird that is seen that day, trying not to count the same individual bird more than once.

However, due to Covid, participation in the field has to be limited to individuals that live in the same household.

For those of you that want to participate, you can count the birds at your feeders. This is very simple. All you have to do is begin counting the birds at sunrise and continue throughout

the day, trying not to count the same bird more than once.

Keep a tally of the number of species you see, along with the number of individual birds you see.

At the end of the day, simply send your totals to me at pymyowl@frii.com.

For those of you that have participated in the past and have a specific location that you counted previously, contact me and you’re welcome to count that area this year; remember, that you will still need to be a group of individuals that live in the same household.

This testing is for symptomatic individuals and those who have been identified as close contacts of positive COVID cases.

Testing will be held at the Pavilion (1115 Rooftop Way at the Fairgrounds) from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.

For this past Christmas I made tree ornaments that were a once-in-a-lifetime design: a snowman wearing a face mask.

If I’d given these ornaments as gifts last Christmas, the recipients would have unwrapped these little N95 guys and shrugged. But in 2020 a masked snowman ornament made perfect sense.

I sign and date the ornaments I make each year and that was different this year as well. On the base of the snowmen I wrote, “2020. The Year That Wasn’t. ” That pretty much sums it up.

In 2020 we stayed home. We ate in. We canceled appointments, celebrations and classes—or moved them online. Sadly, we also held virtual funerals. Yet, when my family had an online memorial service for Aunt Bobbie, who died of COVID, I reconnected with distant cousins I hadn’t seen in years. We agreed we won’t wait years to see each other again, thanks to Zoom.

In 2020 people talked about quarantining (which sounds medical and sterile), social distancing (which sounds like a party that is far from home) and lockdown (and that sounds like it involves a cell and handcuffs which, come to think of it, is what 2020 felt like a lot of the time). We discussed our bubbles (which is completely different from saying, “Is your adorable baby smiling at me or is he just passing—um—bubbles? ”). We talked about the numbers (and that’s not in reference to the number of pounds we’ve gained since this all started in March) and about flattening the curve (we’re not talking referring to the curves created by those pounds I just mentioned).

We learned that singing “Happy Birthday to You” twice takes 20 seconds and that’s how long we’re supposed to wash our hands. But I timed myself and I can sing “Happy Birthday” in 4.46 seconds if I sing it to someone with a one-syllable name.

So I sing “Stairway to Heaven” instead.

(It’s the longest song I can think of. We loved it in high school because we got to slow dance to it for eight whole minutes.)

In 2020 we started keeping a list of people we had even remote thoughts about getting together with, and then checked it twice if we did meet, say in the driveway. We learned this was called contact tracing. It did not involve either contact paper or tracing paper. Just note paper stuck to the fridge with a list of suspicious names on it, a la McCarthyism. If we were in the vicinity of someone who was exposed, we had to self-isolate for two weeks. It’s COVIDspeak and it was the language of 2020.

We’ve become familiar with the CDC, PPE, WHO, WFH and Dr. Anthony Fauci, now a household name that is guaranteed to show up in a future Trivial Pursuit game. (No, he never endorsed the use of hydroxychloroquine as a cure for COVID, nor did he say injecting

bleach into your bloodstream was a good idea. That was somebody else.)

It didn’t take long to figure out we only need a fifth of the wardrobe in our closet. The other clothes—you know, the pants with zippers and blouses that require a bra—are for when you are with other people. Pajamas and sweats are all you need when you don’t leave the house.

In 2020, automobile travel became the new air travel. Now, when I get into a car, I look forward to the trip as if I were flying to Hawaii, even if I’m only going to the park to walk the dog. An outing!

And I pack like it too. At a minimum I take a mask, water, snacks, lunch, wipes and hand sanitizer. (Whenever I use my sanitizer I get the urge to drink a margarita, on ice with salt please. I figured out it’s because my hand sanitizer smells like tequila.)

Until March many of us had never heard of Zoom, and by April we’d figured out how to rejoin a meeting in mere seconds after the free 40 minutes are up.

Zoom has been a lifeline for a lot of people throughout this pandemic. Despite its flaws (don’t ever try to sing with others on the screen. It’s a disaster!), Zoom makes it so that there can only be one conversation carried at a time so you don’t have to miss any news. Everybody gets to hear that Zia is expecting, news that otherwise might be shared in the living room while you’re getting a drink in the kitchen. (Apparently there has been a boom of corona babies being born, starting in mid-December, exactly nine months after lockdown.)

If we didn’t know it already, because of coronavirus we learned that nature is the great healer. When I see my mom through the window, so close and yet so far away, I yearn so badly to put my arms around her, feel her familiar shape and kiss her soft skin. So I find a big tree and stretch my arms around its trunk. I flatten my front against its bark, press my cheek into its roughness, and squeeze as hard as I can. I might even kiss that big old tree. It makes me feel better. Hugging trees has always made me feel better.

There are things yet to learn from 2020, the year that came to a halt under the curse of a pandemic. My prediction is that when it’s all over, when the hex is lifted and we are once again free to roam, we will look back at 2020 and wish we had some of its idiosyncrasies back. The slower pace, the added time with family, the home-cooked meals, the long walks. And tree hugs.

Horray, hooray the year of 2020 is over and may our troubles end with it. Happy New Year! We begin 2021 with great hope for the future and look forward to being able to start to live our former life.

I pray that those dreams and hopes are soon to become a reality. I for one, anxiously await my turn for the vaccine.

But, our lives have not returned to normal yet and we must continue to practice safe, healthy habits. I have taken to really noticing the different masks people wear. Some are only plain paper, others come in different patterns of material and shapes. I look beyond the masks to the people’s eyes and their expressions.

Some seem distracted, worried, or intent on their mission but the ones I enjoy are the sudden twinkle that tells me they are returning my smile. That makes a moment of happiness in my day. One gift that is given and returned in kind immediately is a smile.

I have no special plans for New Year’s Day so I thought I might do a little baking to replenish all the goodies I gave at Christmas. I made my favorite thumb print cookies, banana bread, cranberry bread, and French yogurt cake with blueberries. I did freeze some for later use or little gifts, but I ate all the yogurt cake and as you can guess I really liked that one. I usually make mini loaves rather than one large one, but I think the yogurt cake is better in a large pan. It seems to stay a bit moister. If you decide to make the smaller version bake 40-42 minutes. This recipe is adjusted for our high altitude here in Estes at about 7,500-8,000. Adjust a bit more for higher elevation.

French Yogurt Cake

Oven 375 degrees and bake 45-50 minutes. Test at 45 minutes. 8 ½ x 4 ¼ pan or little larger. Grease with spray oil and flour pan, shaking out excess.

1 ½ cups all-purpose flour 1 ½ tsp. baking powder ¾ tsp. salt 1 cup sugar, minus 3 Tbs.

1 Tbs. grated lemon zest (rind) 1 generous cup Greek yogurt. ½ cup vegetable oil 2 large eggs ½ tsp. vanilla 1 cup blueberries (optional) Whisk flour, salt and baking powder in a medium bowl. In a larger bowl mix zest with sugar between fingers until sugar seems moist from the lemon zest.

Add to that the yogurt, oil, eggs and vanilla and whisk to blend. Fold in dry ingredients and then add berries (optional).

Pour into pan and smooth the top.

Bake until top of cake is golden brown and tester comes out clean, cool in pan on wire rack 15 minutes. Invert on rack and cool completely. You can also glaze the cake if desired with a lemon and powdered sugar glaze.

I had a wonderful Christmas with Marie and Lexie. My biggest surprise was a few nights before I had them and Cecelia over to play Mahjong. While we were visiting upstairs, I noticed Greg had parked down by the basement door.

I wondered what he was doing. Maybe borrowing (stealing) some firewood.

The girls went ahead of me and started yelling that this was exactly what he was doing. But, as I entered the playroom, what to my wondering eyes did appear?

My four children and their families had collaborated and bought me an electric Mahjong table! It automatically sets up the tiles and then resets them. I had played on one in China and always teased I would love to have one. What should I tease for next? A Tesla?! Now I am really teasing. I am so thankful for my family as I know you are for yours.

My dog Sunshine got a new bed as she destroyed her old one. There was stuffing everywhere. She found a slight rip and investigated that thoroughly.

EVICS To Offer Mothers’ Group & Early Childhood Consultation To Parents And Providers Estes Valley Investment in Childhood Success (EVICS) welcomes Stacy, our new early childhood mental health consultant! Stacy is a master’s level licensed professional counselor and infant mental health specialist who brings extensive experience providing early childhood and family services. Stacy is here to promote social-emotional development and to support parents and caregivers of very young children—whether it be to help promote attachment, positive communication, or dealing with stressors and/or challenging behaviors. She will be facilitating developmental screenings and be able to help families access early intervention and behavioral health services.

Estes Valley early childhood educators and providers can also contact EVICS for early childhood mental health consultation and training!

EVICS will offer a monthly mother’s group for would-be, new, and experienced mothers of young children beginning in January. Five Fun Facts About… Pine Squirrels By: Dawn Wilson

This week’s featured animal is the pine squirrel. Nine squirrels call Colorado home: Abert’s, fox, pine, 13lined, Wyoming ground, rock, spotted ground, white-tailed antelope, and the golden-mantled ground. Of these, the first three are in a category of tree squirrels, which build their nests in cavities, witches’ broom (a dense mass of shoots as a result of a rust disease) or clumps of leaves, pine needles and

twigs in trees. Here are five more facts about these cute little tree dwellers.

1. Pine squirrels are also referred to as chickarees, and depending on the region, red squirrel, Douglas or Mearn’s.

2. These small squirrels with short bushy tails are in the genus Tamiasciurus, a Greek term that means “hoarder squirrel.”

3. Pine squirrels do not hibernate in

winter but rather survive off a cache of pinecones collected throughout the summer and fall. Look for the piles of scales from stripped cones, called middens, at the base of conifer and ponderosa pine trees as an indicator of the squirrel’s existence in the tree.

4. Chickarees are extremely territorial.

They will sound out a noisy alarm call— a sharp bark or chirp—for up to an hour to warn off intruders.

5. Common in Rocky Mountain National Park, this is the smallest tree squirrel in this region.

Letter From Restorative Justice Participant Below is a letter to the editor (community) from a Restorative Justice participant. This letter resulted from the participants' Restorative Justice Community Group Conference, and was agreed upon as contract item that would help repair harm caused by their actions. As the community was also impacted by these actions, we hope this letters helps to repair harm, restore community and create a better understanding of what this individual will do to make better choices in the future.

To The Editor/Community: Today, society builds many negative connotations of individuals who commit a crime. The negative stigma that many individuals experience is that people who break the law are categorized as just insensitive criminals who cause violence.

These norms can sometimes hold prejudice narratives against those who then go through the process of restorative justice.

However, these perspectives are sometimes narrow and we can become blinded by stereotypes.

This summer, a conflict arose that led to me appearing in court to face the consequences. This conflict was the result of a fight between me and the victim that was escalated due to my actions. Yet, an option to go through a different route was presented to me at the court hearing for my case. This was when I was referred to the Estes Park RJ program. It was definitely not an easy choice to make as I was getting myself into something unfamiliar and unknown. Even though I had never heard of what a restorative program was, the individuals who participated in organ-

izing the Estes Park RJ were friendly and patient enough to communicate with me and set a comfortable environment.

During the process, community members from different backgrounds got together to provide insight on the situation and talk with me about how my actions caused uncertainty within the community. After the conference call, my peers and I agreed to community service as an act of altruism for the doubt of community security that my case caused. This program made me aware that my actions could hurt those that weren’t even present during the altercation. Even though the community wasn’t directly there to witness my altercation the impact was equally present. My actions that night showed me that the victim, the police, and the community were affected by my wrongdoings.

As a result, the RJ process helped me understand myself better and find solutions to prevent future altercations from arising. A method that I learned was being able to find ways to deal with my negative emotions in a positive way. If I feel like I’m starting to build up a bottle of negative emotions, then try exercising where that built up emotion can be safely expressed and not become bottled up. Another method is simply thinking of what the future consequences might be if I acted upon my emotions and then reflecting on past experiences. RJ isn’t a negative experience and it actually teaches you new ways to take responsibility and become a better community member within society.

Christmas Spirit Alive And Well To The Editor: A most amazing and Christmas thing happened last week! We went to Safeway to finish up our Christmas shopping. There was a bit of a line at checkout, and we were lined up (with masks and distancing) with about three buggies in front of us.

That gave us time to chat with a very pleasant lady in front of us, who we had never met before. She lives in Estes Park, but commutes to Loveland to work each day. She checked out ahead of us, and when it was our turn, the checker finished up and said the previous customer had left something for us. It was a $100.00 bill, to apply to our grocery bill! By then, the giver was of course long gone, with name unknown to us. But rest assured, her Christmas gift and spirit is surely not forgotten!

Library Delivers To Your Door On Two Days In January This month, the Estes Valley Library is offering two special opportunities for patrons to receive House Calls delivery service of their library materials.

This special opportunity is in celebration of the 2021 One Book One Valley, while also offering a covid-safe way to receive materials. Although librarians won't be riding a pack horse like “The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek,” they will gladly schedule a contact-free delivery to your front doorstep.

Deliveries in January are available on two dates: Friday, January 8 and Friday, January 22, from 10 a.m. to noon.

Recipients do not necessarily need to be home to receive their deliveries.

The items will be safely wrapped in a bag. A volunteer will knock or ring the bell upon delivery, but it is not necessary to answer or to present a library card (check-outs will be done beforehand).

To prepare for a delivery, you can search the library catalog, place holds, and when your items are ready, simply email Gretel Bock at gbock@estesvalleylibrary.org. Or, you can say, 'surprise me' by using the "Special Orders-Just for You” online form, where you tell list general subject areas or media types you enjoy, and staff will bundle books, audio or movies matched to your interests.

The January-only delivery service gives everyone three differ-

ent options for checking out library materials, along with in-library checkouts and curbside pick-up service, which are both available six days a week.

Deliveries can be arranged to most anywhere within the boundaries of the Estes Valley Public Library District, with the exception of Drake, Storm Mountain, and Allenspark.

This special opportunity allows patrons to enjoy the same delivery service that is usually reserved for those who have physical challenges or visual limitations. “FORGETTING WHAT IS BEHIND AND PRESSING ON TOWARD WHAT IS BEFORE”

Charles Schultz, creator of the Peanuts cartoons, on one occasion had Lucy observing…”Charlie Brown, life is like a deck chair.” “Like a what?” “Haven’t you been on a cruise, Charlie Brown? Passengers open up these canvass deck chairs so they can sit in the sun. Some people place their chairs facing the rear of the ship so they can see where they’ve been. Other people face their chairs forward. They want to see where they’re going. On the cruise ship of life, Charlie Brown, which way is your deck chair facing?” Charlie thinks for a moment and replies: “Shucks, I’ve never been able to get mine unfolded.”

Naming the month of January dates back to 153 B.C. It is named after Janus, a mythical god of early Rome. Janus had two faces—one looking forward toward the future and one looking back on the past. On December 31, Romans imagined Janus looking backward on the old year and forward into the new year. This became a symbolic time to make resolutions for the new year and to forgive enemies for troubles in the past. This week many of us will do the same. Many, however, will not. Some will be like the woman who wrote: “I got sick if the same charade—lots of time spent planning and ‘intending’ and very little time executing.

Remember the shame spiral: ‘Well, I didn’t get to the gym 7 times this week so I might as well eat four office doughnuts.’ Or ‘I forgot to journal yesterday so I might as well let it collect dust for the next few months.’ Or ‘Well, I can’t go running today because of my cold, so I guess I’ll wait 8 months until I run again.’”

With memories of past failures to ‘follow through’ on keeping our resolutions, why should I begin 2021 with a list of these ‘intentions’ One good reason is because those who draft a list of such will change far more than those who don’t. According to an article published in the Journal of Counseling Psychology, only 46% of those who made New Year’s resolutions were successful in keeping them. So, over half failed! However, of those ‘non-resolvers’ only 4% made any significant change. It does pay to sit down and list some ‘intentions’ for 2021.

But what should I make resolutions about? Here are the ten most often included in resolutions: Exercise more; Lose weight; Get organized; Learn a new skill or hobby; Live life to the fullest; Save more money / spend less money; Quit smoking; Spend more time with family and friends; Travel more; Read more. As we read this list, we recognize that many of these were and will be impacted by the pandemic. So, in the making of any list of resolutions, we know that circumstances of life will make some easier, some impossible! But we can get an ideal of some areas we might want to include on our list.

Here are some suggestions to help you for this New Year: (1) Mentally prepare for change. Steve Covey says that ‘everything is created twice…once in the mind, then in reality; (2) Set a goal that motivates YOU…not what others want you to do; (3) Limit resolutions to a reasonable amount / level; (4) Be a SMART goal setter = Specific, Measureable, Attainable, Relevant, Time-sensitive; (5) Break up big goals into smaller ones; (6) Write down your goals…in a journal, on your electronic device; (7) Share your resolution with others; (8) Invite others to share that resolution with you; (9) Review your resolution regularly; (10) If you fall off track, get going again quickly.

Besides the positive resolutions you may choose to make, one woman’s list includes ‘quitting’ the following things in 2021: ‘Comparing herself with others’; ‘Mindless social media scrolling’; ‘Using escapist methods to cope with stress’; ‘Complaining’; ‘Making excuses’; ‘Overcommitting’; ‘Convincing herself she’s not capable’; ‘Putting others down’” Alexandra Davis’ advice: “2020 has brought no shortage of challenges but with a humble posture we can approach the new year with a resolution to focus on what truly matters, and leave the rest behind.”

The year 2020 has been a tough one for all of us, let’s do ourselves some ‘favors’ in 2021 by setting some ‘intention’ goals and mentally, spiritually, and behaviorally, set the stage for a Happy New Year. God bless us everyone.

Mona, Bella, Bob And Snowbelle Are Looking For New, Loving Homes Mona is an awesome kitty! She is affectionate, polite and happy. She enjoys following her foster mom around the house and being close. She loves to lounge in the sun. She is about eight years old. Mona is not good with other kitties and will do best in a home where she can be the spoiled diva that she is.

Bella is a three to four year old Corgi mix who is a very sweet dog. She seems to do well with cats and dogs and is house trained. She is great on a leash and at 48 pounds, she needs to lose a little bit of weight in the coming year.

She’d be a fantastic work-out/walking buddy to help you (and her) with some weight loss walks.

Bob is about two years old. He seems to do well with other cats and dogs. He enjoys snuggling and is very easy going.

Snowbelle is about eight years old. Her

family had to move away and they could not take her. She is a shy kitty who is sweet and curious and would do okay with a calm dog or child. 2020 offers all of us the opportunity to celebrate not only the passage of the 19th Amendment but also the achievements of women over that last 100 years. Celebrations are planned nation-wide, in every state and in local communities. A number of local organizations and community leaders, under the leadership of Jean McGuire, formed a committee to coordinate the local celebration under the title, “100 Years: A Celebration of Women.” These paragraphs have been collected by the Estes Valley Library. They have been appearing in the Estes Park News for several months and 100 will be chosen to be published as a booklet.

The Story Of Jean Austin Dec 30 Full Moon

Jean Austin, a native Coloradan, grew up in Sterling. She moved to Estes Park in 1980 after meeting and marrying her husband Jim. They brought a combined household of six children to the marriage. Even with three already away from home, the remaining three according to Jean “ate like there was nothing” so she decided to go back to work. She first worked for Judy’s Flower then purchased Ala Carte.

In 1984, Jean had heard about people buying and sending Christmas gifts for needy families on Indian Reservations and wondered if there was a need in Estes Park. She contacted the manager of the County’s Human Development office in Estes and asked. His response was, “How many would you like to have?” That year they provided gifts and food for five families.

In the late 80s, Jean was asked, “Why don’t you come out of the dark and let others know what you are doing?”

Bright Christmas was officially established as a 501c3 and through community support over 125 families are given food, gifts, clothing and household goods every year.

Bright Christmas now works in partnership with Crossroads to identify families not only for Christmas, but throughout the year when there is a need. The recreation district provides the Hangar to gather and distribute all of the donations and many churches, clubs, individuals, and businesses in town provide donations as well. In addition to the annual holiday collection, Bright Christmas also gathers school supplies for the kids as they head back to school.

The Story Of Patricia (Yeager) Washburn By: Carey Stevanus

Pat Washburn has several historic family ties in Estes Park. First, her grandparents were Joe and Ethel Mills who owned and operated the Crags Lodge. Joe was the younger brother of Enos Mills. Her mother Eleanor then married Park Ranger and Historian, Dorr Yeager who designed the Moraine Park Museum.

Though she was born in Berkeley, CA and lived in several National Parks throughout her childhood, Pat spent time in Estes Park visiting family. In 1970 she purchased the home originally owned by CSU Professor Lory and started spending summers here.

Pat began working for the Rocky Mountain Conservancy in the early

1980s and continued for 36 years.

Originally named the Rocky Mountain Nature Association, her father had founded the group and her grandfather was its first president. She spent summers working at Moraine Park Museum teaching visitors about the Park’s history.

Following in the footsteps of her father and grandfather yet again, Pat became a local author. She is the coauthor of Tracks in Time – A Children’s History of Estes Park and Exploring the Park Together – A Family Guide to RMNP. Pat was given the Pioneer Award in 2018 by the Estes Park Museum Friends and Foundation Board.

Another year has come and gone.

While 2020 will be remembered as a year unlike any other – it is time now to review and to look forward, making plans for 2021. Below are suggestions for 2021 societal accomplishments, but they are also areas where the deeds of one human being can affect others … goals which cannot be accomplished without individual participation, ways we can make a difference.

Let us make America kind again – truly. The past few years have been increasingly marred by divisive attitudes, too numerous to mention. J.K. Rowling, in her address to Harvard graduates, suggested putting imagination to use placing oneself in someone else’s shoes for a better understanding.

Competition was the guideline for much of 2020. Let’s pursue collaboration and understanding in 2021.

I, for one, resolve to follow every guideline from the CDC and other leaders to prevent the spread of COVID-19, who aspire to end the high case count and the overloaded hospitals by constantly washing hands, wearing a mask whenever away from home, and six foot distance from non household members at all times, inside or outside. We are all in this together.

The U.S. Congress has passed a stimulus package to alleviate the current economic depression. To be successful, a stimulus must be spent and respent and it is best to spend it locally, in the Estes Valley, whenever possible. Economics 101: The more often money changes hands before leaving the local economy, the more successful the economic effect. When choosing how to spend it - it does not matter whether it is spent on rent and utilities, on groceries, or on luxuries. When choosing where to spend it – check availability in the Estes Valley first. If not possible here at home, look for Colorado companies, and then U.S. made.

An increased interest in the preservation of the Earth has materialized from the revelations of the last year. The hurricanes and the fires have made the government more aware of the threats caused by climate changes and of the contributions of mankind to the ever increasing danger.

The coronavirus pandemic has mag-

nified the dangers of metropolitan existence. World wide, inhabitants have come to the realization that the planet is in danger. This has developed an interest in the creation of a circular economy. To regain our place as an economic leader, the United States must stop wasteful purchasing, using, tossing, and replacing. Just one paper towel, becomes one roll, becomes multiple rolls, becomes a habit that costs (financially) when you buy it – and again to dispose of it. It then enters the landfill, costing (ecologically) for generations to come.

If we follow the “leave no trace” principles of the original inhabitants of this continent, we will use and reuse, as opposed to burying the remnants of everything we do. If we reuse, we not only keep the resource out of the landfill, but we negate the necessity of creating another from original resources. If we pass it on to someone else for reuse, the same principles apply. If we recycle or compost the used item, then it is reprocessed to become raw material for remanufacture, which is essentially also reuse. We must begin to comprehend the cost (financial and ecological) of throwing “out.”

There have been many protests this year, regrettably, sometimes exceeding the bounds of wise interaction during the pandemic. Some have even stepped over the line causing irreparable damage to property and to innocent individuals. There is no excuse for such actions.

The time has come to move from protest to policy. In a democracy, it is vital that each citizen form opinions on the current issues of diversity, immigration, health insurance, gun laws, free speech, civil rights for women and men of all socio-economic strata, big business, small business, education, climate action and zero waste, welfare and workfare. This is, I am sure, an incomplete list.

Once we read, listen, study, think, and form an opinion – then we must speak and write to communicate that opinion to the appropriate leaders (local, county, state, and nation).

Kathi Lee Weldin

Kathi Lee Weldin passed away in Longmont, CO on December 19, 2020, at the age of 63 after contracting COVID-19. Kathi was born in Long Beach, CA on June 2, 1957, to Lee and Caroline (Ridgeway) Weldin, and was the second born of five girls. She was preceded in death by her mother, Caroline, and her nephew, Jeffery Giles.

Kathi is survived by her father, Lee Weldin, four sisters: Teri Salerno (Tony), Nancy Kuhlman (Keith), Vicki Weibel (Curt), and Wendy Ickes (Ed), three uncles: Ralph Ridgeway, Terry Ridgeway, and Robert Bonar, and three aunts: Virginia Askew, Jeanette Aguilar and Judi Darnold. Kathi is also survived by six nieces and nephews: Jamie Giles (Jason), Lauren Gundy (Guthrie), Nick McDougall, Faith Weibel, Anna Weibel, and Jeremiah Allen, plus five great nieces and nephews: Elissa Giles, Jacob Stewart, Joey Stewart, JJ Stewart and Carter Gundy. Additionally, Kathi was blessed

by Poppy Helgren, of Hendersen, NV,

with 52 years of true friendship.

Kathi spent her early years growing up in southern California until her family moved briefly to Nevada in 1972 and then finally to Colorado in 1973. Kathi graduated from Golden High School in 1976. The Weldin family moved again in 1982, settling in Estes Park.

Kathi was a very special soul. She was born with schizophrenia and this mental illness colored every aspect of her life. Kathi lived at home with her parents for nearly all of her days, until the age of 58. She moved in early 2016 to Collinwood, an assisted living facility in Ft. Collins. Her final residence was Applewood Living Center, a skilled nursing home in Longmont, Colorado.

All who knew Kathi loved her generous spirit and kind heart. Kathi lived for the mail, and loved writing and receiving letters - it was the highlight of her day. Kathi sent letters to everyone who wrote to her and her cards were filled with gratitude and kindness. Kathi also loved to count her money. Family and friends frequently sent her mail with stickers, pictures … and often small amounts of cash. Kathi loved money, but her love for money was born from her desire to give people gifts. She loved to go shopping to buy presents for others. There was also another reason she loved to shop, and that was to buy candy for herself. Kathi especially loved chocolate and she ate it every chance she got!

A funny thing Kathi would always say when we were planning to have a meal was, “I am not hungry, but I’ll eat” … and she always did! There was always room for dessert too, chocolate or not.

ways believed that one day she would be cured of her illness, and no one ever put a damper on the dream she held so dear.

Her entire life she would announce how old she would be when the world would discover a cure for schizophrenia … only to have to keep moving the time to an older age! She never gave up on getting well. All who loved her told her when she died, her spirit would be free of schizophrenia, but Kathi thought she could postpone death, beat the odds, and told her family she was going to live to be 200! There was no convincing her otherwise, in spite of reminding her what living to 100 looked like. Kathi’s spirited nature and strong will was always apparent to those who knew her.

Sometimes that spirit taught us about patience and humility too. One time while at a garage sale with one of her sisters, Kathi found something she wanted to buy. The owner kindly told her that she could have the item for free and Kathi refused. She insisted on paying the woman because it was “the right thing to do” and proceeded to make everyone wait while she paid her in pennies – counting them one at a time!

Kathi loved music and was usually able to tell us the name of the performing artist or band on the radio. She also was the one in the family who could remember many details about our past (sometimes things we wanted to forget!), but Kathi had the “elephant’s memory” we could always count on. Kathi loved animals too, and cared for her various pet cats throughout her life. Kathi would also often surprise us with some wit and wisdom we called “Kathi-isms,” saying such gems as, “I have a brain, but unfortunately, it is a nutty one!” and “You know … you just have to know what you

know. You don’t have to think about it, you just know it!” Kathi also expressed delusions of grandeur and would tell us she was “the prettiest girl … or the funniest, the smartest, the most generous, or the nicest person in the whole wide world!” and of course we would agree with her each time.

Kathi’s niece, Lauren Gundy, sums up our feelings about Kathi. “If a person’s life could be defined by selflessness, kindness, strong faith and the ability to teach profound lessons, Kathi’s would be. Our family has a big hole through our collective heart right now without her. Knowing her was definitely one of the greatest joys and true gifts of my life. She taught me truths that will travel with me through my entire lifetime. Kathi was sweet and feisty, having an ability to interject funny phrases with the perfect comedic timing. She was always hopeful for the future and for herself, all while having a difficult load to carry. May she rest in the most beautiful paradise, be free from a heavy mind, and know that she truly was loved by so many people. I love picturing the image of her dancing with the angels to all of her favorite songs. Maybe send a hand-written note to someone you love in her honor.

I know my mailbox will never feel quite the same without my cherished “Kathi Letters.” Be free and may your spirit be lifted with love, Aunt Kathi.

H. Dayton Raben

March 1936 – December 20, 2020 Dayton embarked on what he always referred to as “The Great Adventure” the evening of December 20th after suffering a stroke while out joyriding with his beloved wife of 60 years, Ann Strange Owl-Raben.

Dayton was born in Scottsbluff, Nebraska to Lyndall and W. O. “Pat” Raben of Huntley, Wyoming in the spring of 1936, the youngest of their three children. When asked about his age, he told folks he was a year older than Spam and definitely older than dirt. He was 84 at the time of his passing and was grateful for a “good, long run.”

Dayton grew up on the plains of Wyoming hunting, fishing, playing

basketball, riding his horse, his Harley and “bucking bales of hay” on the family farm. He earned his B. A. from the Colorado State College of Education (now UNC) and began teaching in a one room schoolhouse near Ethete on the Arapaho Reservation in central Wyoming in the mid-1950s.

Fascinated with American Indian culture since childhood, he thrived with the Arapaho often hunting deer and antelope for the school’s lunchtime meals with his students on weekends. It was here that he met his wife, Ann Strange Owl in late 1959 while she was working as a traveling dental hygienist with the Indian Health Service. After meeting Ann, a couple of his students ran to tell him they had found a wife for him. Three months later, they were married. Or at least they thought they were – interracial marriages were illegal in Wyoming at the time and the Justice of the Peace didn’t sign their marriage license.

Upon their marriage, Dayton was given the Cheyenne name Red Wolf (Ma’o’nehe) by Ann’s mother, Grace Strange Owl. He was named after her ancestor, a brother of Mary Bent of Bent’s Fort. Out of traditional Cheyenne respect for his mother-inlaw, Dayton never spoke to her, looked at her, or was ever in the same room as her. He hunted for her and was respon-

sible for bringing the first electricity to Ann’s home village of Birney. Dayton’s Northern Cheyenne family remember him as the kindest of men and mourn his passing.

After experiencing racial intolerance in Wyoming and Montana, where Ann’s reservation is located they decided to move to California on advice from Dayton’s father – “Move far away, just the two of you. Get a good start together. ” After traveling to Fairbanks, Alaska to attend a summer of masters studies in education they settled in Buttonwillow, California where he found joy in teaching once again.

After welcoming their daughter Nico in 1963, Dayton and Ann decided to move closer to family and landed in Berthoud, Colorado in 1966 where Dayton continued his teaching career at Berthoud High School, retiring in 1992.

Beginning in 1979, Dayton and Ann worked summers for Charles Eagle Plume of Allenspark, Colorado having met him in 1967 at his trading post on Highway 7. After Charles’ death in 1992, the family took up the reins of the business where Dayton was the resident storyteller and holder of knowledge. He love regaling customers with legends, history, and anything related to Native art and culture. He also loved making a good deal, visiting with kids, and harassing those he thought deserved it.

Dayton is survived by his wife, Ann as well as his daughter Nico (Paul Tschohl), her son Dah’som (Jessica Richardson) and his daughter Dawn Blue Wing, as well as Nico’s stepsons Brandon and Austin.

He is also survived by two daughters from an earlier marriage: DaMarr Raben, her children Kai (Eric) Fry and Dylan Robinson, and his son Owyn Robinson, as well as Dayton’s second born daughter, Roxanne Raben, who follows in his footsteps as a teacher and champion of troubled teens. He also leaves behind his sister, Margie Jones as well as many nieces, nephews, in-laws, friends and his granddawg Astro.

Dayton was adamant that if he were ever hooked up to tubes and wires, unable to function, that a friend or loved one would step on the hoses, snip the wires. He repeatedly told his daughters to wheel him over a cliff if he ever became too much trouble.

That’s the kind of guy he was. He made us promise to not have a memorial or (horrors!) a funeral. He wanted a party. We plan on honoring that wish next summer after covid-19 subsides. We will keep you posted.
