World Listening Day-Take A Moment To Listen To Nature’s Sounds July 18 was World Listening Day and Rocky Mountain National Park is celebrating with the release of the Rocky Mountain National Park Sound Library.

This extensive acoustic catalog contains over 210 recordings of more than 60 bird species, natural soundscapes, and wildlife vocalizations including elk, coyotes, western chorus frogs and even a pine squirrel. All the recordings were collected in the park by Dr. Jacob Job, a researcher with Colorado State University and the NPS Natural Sounds & Night Skies Division.

The Sound Library is part of the ongoing commitment of the National Park Service to document and preserve the natural sounds of the environment. The Sound Library provides a way for all visitors to experience the sounds of the park and creates a historical record of the soundscapes so that changes can be monitored over time. Pictures and additional information help visitors learn more about the park’s extensive wildlife.

courting and mating, raising families, finding food and avoiding predators, and protecting the young. Picture elk bugling and coyote listening to mice under snow!

Natural sounds have health benefits too. Studies confirm that if we are fortunate enough to hear birds singing, elk bugling, water flowing in a stream or aspen leaves quaking, it can alter our heart rate and help our brain’s connections.

Army Corps Of Engineers “Silver Jackets” Present, “Ways To Reduce Flood Damages” Program On July 25 In May 2016, the elite U.S. Army Corps of Engineers team known as the “Silver Jackets,” in collaboration with the Town of Estes Park, visited downtown Estes Park to assess flood risk and identify potential measures to reduce future flood damages. The Silver Jackets team has provided its final report and will discuss its report and recommendations July 25 at 8 a.m. in the Town Board Room of Town Hall, 170 MacGregor Ave. The Town encourages residents and businesses to attend to learn more about the program and flood mitigation techniques that can be applied throughout the community. The meeting will be streamed and recorded via www.estes.org/videos.

The Silver Jackets report includes individual building flood vulnerability assessments and recommendations for 37 business and residential properties that signed up to participate. These participating businesses and residents are not required to follow the Silver Jackets’ recommendations, although doing so could be beneficial when new floodplain maps are adopted in the future. The full report with property recommendations is also

“The Silver Jackets assessment analyzed commercial and residential structures to determine how owners could make them less vulnerable to flood damage through adaptations like flood barriers, dry/wet floodproofing, crawlspace modifications, entryway elevation and more,” commented Floodplain Manager Kelly Stallworth. He continued, “These concepts can be applied broadly so the information is valuable to property owners facing flood risk in any location. Implementing the techniques described in the report throughout the community will, collectively, improve our flood resiliency.”

This free flood recovery service for the community is valued at more than $100,000. The charge(s) are merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

On July 11 at 8:37 a.m. police were called to a disturbance in the 1000 block of Big Thompson Ave. Upon arrival they arrested a 28 year old male from Estes Park and charged him with domestic violence and harassment . On scene police also arrested a 19 year old female from Estes Park and charged her with domestic violence and second degree assault. Both were transported to the Larimer County Jail.

On July 12 at 12:31 a.m. police issued a summons to a 62 year old female transient for camping in public at 215 W. Riverside.

On July 12 at 5:39 p.m. police were called

to 1125 Rooftop Way on a report of a disturbance. Upon arrival they cited a 38 year old female from Salt Lake City and charged her with child abuse.

On July 2 at 10:14 p.m. police were called to a disturbance at 260 W. Riverside. Upon arrival they charged a 41 year old male from Estes Park with third degree assault against a 43 year old victim. He was issued a summons and later released.

On July 5 at 5:08 a.m. police were called to a disturbance at 508 Birch Ave. Upon arrival they charged a 22 year old female from Estes Park with domestic violence and third degree assault against a 25 year old victim. The female was transported to Larimer County Jail.

EVFPD firefighters generally respond to medical calls in their personal vehicles, allowing for a faster response. On other incidents, firefighters respond to a fire station to respond in department apparatus with specialized equipment.

During the week of July 8, the Estes Valley Fire Protection District

Presentation On Child Care Challenges Please join the Town of Estes Park’s Family Advisory Board to hear a presentation on what Breckenridge, Colorado is doing to address its child care challenges.

Jennifer McAtamney is the Child Care Program Coordinator for the Town of Breckenridge. She previously served on the Town Council for the Town of Breckenridge and has been involved with the Town’s efforts to address the lack of quality, affordable child care since the beginning.

The Family Advisory Board has invited Jennifer to give this presentation in order to learn more about potential options for addressing the Estes Valley’s child care challenges and what role/roles the Town of Estes Park could play.

The presentation takes place from 4 to 5:30 p.m. July 26 in the Town Board Room of Town Hall, 170 MacGregor Ave. The meeting will also be streamed live and recorded for viewing later at www.estes.org/videos.

Christann Higley New Manager Of Repertoire Theatre Company The Board of Estes Park Repertoire Theatre Company announces a change in its leadership. Christann Higley has been elected “Managing Director” of the 10 year old theatre group.

Christann, who has been with the group from the early years, has replaced Art Blume as leader of the group. Art remains on the board as an advisor.

The staff at Marys Lake Lodge want to thank Claire’s on the Park, Shamrock Foods, Rocky Mountain Foods, Smokin’ Daves, Cheese Importers, Wild Basin, and the Dunraven for the wonderful lunches for all of us. We get through every day very well fed. We cannot ignore some of the incredibly kind condo owners that have been bringing cookies, snacks and drinks over the past almost three weeks.

We would also like to give a very big thank you to the Estes Park Golf Course for donating the use of two golf carts during the time we have been restricted from using our vehicles on property.

11 Annual Weed Roundup Saturday

Noxious weeds are once again having a banner year, so keep removing and bagging these invaders. Removing and bagging flowers and seed heads will help curtail your weed population next year.

Time and persistence will give native plants a better chance! The 11th Annual Weed Roundup will be held this Saturday, July 21st from 9:00 to noon located north of the Waste Management transfer station (across from Smokin’ Dave’s BBQ) at 666 Elm Road (follow the signs). Estes Land Stewardship Association (ELSA) volunteers will be on hand to answer weed questions and unload your bags. Educational displays and information will be available. Bring in your weeds – no slash, pine needles, trash – in paper yard bags for free disposal. Please remove/shake off dirt from plant roots. Unauthorized drop-offs at this location are considered theft of services. Weeds and trash can be disposed of year-around at Waste Management for a fee. No bags of non-weed materials will be accepted at this event. Paper yard bags are available for purchase at local hardware stores.

These events are being made possible with the support from Estes Land Stewardship Association, the Town of Estes Park, Larimer County, Estes Valley Land Trust, and donations.

These three adorable three kittens are named Carlie, Marlie and Yeti. They are super loving. playful and sweet!

Movie Night With NOLS And Estes Park Mountain Shop

This Friday July 20 @ Estes Park Mountain Shop Free Screening of the Acclaimed Documentary, An American Ascent In 2013, NOLS, with help from The North Face and REI, gathered a team of nine African American climbers to attempt to be the first team of color to climb the grueling 20,310-foot peak of the continent's highest physical point, Denali. To mark the 100th anniversary of the peak’s first ascent, Expedition Denali set out to change the face of the mountain. Though the summit was a goal, the ultimate objective was not just to make mountaineering history, but to build a legacy and bridge the adventure gap by paving a way for young people of color to get outside, get active and healthy, become passionate about America’s wild places, and chase their own Denali-sized dreams.

This Friday, July 20, the Estes Park Mountain Shop is proud to partner with NOLS and expedition member Stephen Shobe in hosting a special local screening of An American Ascent, the ac-

claimed documentary of this groundbreaking expedition.

Admission is free and open to the public, and refreshments will be provided.

Screening will begin at 7 p.m,. and will be followed with a Q & A session with Mr. Shobe.

About the NOLS: NOLS is a nonprofit global wilderness school that seeks to help leaders step forward boldly.

Congratulations Oscar Pfleeger!

Meet Oscar Pfleeger, eight years old from Los Angeles, CA. He was a Mutton Bustin’ contestant on Saturday, July 7th, which also happened to be his birthday!

Oscar’s mom shared that they had been trying have him fulfill his dream of Mutton Bustin’, the challenge they had to overcome is he has been a diabetic since the age of two and wears an insulin pump. They had difficulty finding an event that would allow him to ride.

The Rooftop Rodeo allowed him to participate and the best part is, he won!

It sneaks up on us every year: we wake up early one morning and realize it’s not light out.

Just yesterday it seems, the sun was up before we were, the days stretched on like a 12-inning baseball game, and when the sun finally set, we waved the white flag.

“Uncle,” we’d say to the evening orb, spreading its golden glow across the illimitable sky as it tucked itself in just over the horizon. “We’ve made the most of this day but you outlasted us.”

June 21 is a celebration of summer at its peak and the next few weeks are gloriously long, hot and bright. Indeed, on the longest day of the year we were seeing an energizing 15 hours and three minutes of daylight. As that marathon solstice adjourned, I resisted the inclination to go inside, choosing instead to linger longer in the fading light, grasping at every last ray stretching low and long. I didn’t want to see the day end. (I never do.)

This is my definition of summer love.

But then, just like that, we wake, look out the window, and see that the sun got lazy. The sky is dark, the birds are quiet, and when a car drives by, its headlights are on.

“Already?” we ask.

“Not yet!” we say.

It happens overnight.

Some may think I’m getting ahead of myself because it’s only mid-July. But I’m solar powered and every minute of sun-

light charges my battery. Every 60 seconds of darkness drains it.

Fortunately there is still a lot of summer left: the farmers’ market tomatoes aren’t yet ruby red all the way through, the baby elk and deer still have their spots (although they are fading), wildflowers and garden flowers are still contemplating the meaning of their lives (other than being salad for our local wildlife), and we’re eagerly awaiting the arrival of Palisade peaches. Summer, in all its juicy color, is thriving.

But there’s no denying the days are getting shorter. (Just 21 minutes shorter than on June 21. How can so little time make such a big difference?) Next thing we know, it will be cold and frosty and dark.

That’s when we’ll have plenty of shadow hours to dream. We don’t have time for that now because we’re outside playing in the glorious, nourishing light.

Summer comes and summer goes. Today it’s going. Thankfully, it’s leaving slowly (sort of), but its departure will speed up as the calendar pages turn (at its fastest, we will lose about three minutes of light a day). And it’s ok. The days will start getting longer again in December.

For now, here comes the sun. Bring it on!

Highland Music & Gifts

July “Explore Our Store” Showcases Highland Music & Gifts & EP Yoga The July “Explore Our Store” took place on Wednesday, July 11 and featured Highland Music & Gifts and Estes Park Yoga. Representatives from the Visitor Center staff and Ambassadors, Estes Valley Partners for Commerce, Visit Estes Park, Estes Arts District and local businesses enjoyed checking out each stop’s offerings and hearing presentations from the respective owners.

Highland Music & Gifts is located at 459 Wonderview Avenue, Unit #4, in Upper Stanley Village. Owner Robert Keep and his sister-in-law Becky were on hand to welcome attendees and give a tour around the store. Robert detailed his history with music, including earning his music education degree from CU Boulder, teaching public school, working in retail, and then opening Highland Music & Gifts in Estes Park in 2001.

Robert’s history with Estes Park goes way back – his relatives, one of whom was John T. Cleave, were homesteaders.

The store was originally located in the Old Church Shops until this past January, when they moved to their new location in Stanley Village. Highland Music & Gifts carries a great selection of acoustic musical instruments and supplies (guitars, banjos, tin whistles, harps, strings, cork grease, etc.) as well as vintage jewelry, which is Betsy’s department (Betsy’s Bijoux!). They focus on Celtic art as well, with local artists from Longmont, Colorado Springs, and even right here in Estes Park. In his spare time, Robert plays saxophone and oboe with several musical groups in the area, including the Village Band, Jazz Big Band, Oratorio Society, Riverside Ramblers, Wind River Winds, and more. The second stop was on the second

floor of the Park Place Mall at Estes Park Yoga, located at 145 E. Elkhorn Avenue, #200. Studio owner Kendra Ryan welcomed the group into the bright, naturally lit studio that overlooks downtown Estes Park. The studio opened in July 2015 and was purchased by Kendra and her husband in July 2016. Kendra has been practicing yoga for 20 years and teaching for the past nine. Currently they employ eight instructors and provide over a dozen classes each week (including yoga, tai chi, Pilates, breathing and meditation and more). Explore Our Store followers might remember that Estes Park Yoga was the feature back in February of 2017, so Kendra focused on new offerings. Every Tuesday, Kendra teaches a free class for firefighters, and on Fridays at 11 a.m., she leads a free class for veterans and their families. Estes Park Yoga is also involved in wellness programs for the Town of Estes Park, Rocky Mountain National Park, and Estes Park Health. Kendra shared that yoga is meant to bring your mind to calmness and stillness – in her words, “get the monkeys out of your head!” She focuses on creating community in the studio space and invites locals to join in a donation-based class on the first Friday of each month from 6-7 p.m. To learn more and view a full class schedule, visit Estes Park Yoga’s website at www.estesparkyoga.com.

New Year, New Leadership, Goals For Rotary Club Of Estes Park From the Rotary Club of Estes Park The traditional changing of the guard program for the Rotary Club of Estes Park introduced award winners and new club and foundation board members. Held at The Ridgeline Hotel on June 21, the 92year old club celebrated the accomplishments of 2017-18 and welcomed the new Rotary year, which begins July 1.

Club member Chuck Bonza presented the Distinguished Service Award to Thor Homme, whose leadership has been a model for other club members. Bonza praised Homme for “continuing to jump in wherever needed” by the club. His contributions include Duck Race Committee Chair (Big Duck), club president and foundation president. Bonza noted that whenever help is needed with community service projects, Homme is there to lend a hand. In accepting, Homme thanked his wife Darlene for her support.

Groesbeck presented The Legacy Award to Wayne Andersen, a club member for 18 years, for embodying the spirit of Rotary.

She noted his leadership of the Salvation Army bell ringing campaign for several years, his great sense of humor, his weekly service as lunch ticket coordinator, his record-setting year as Big Duck in 2007 and his role as Duck Wrangler.

Two additional awards, the Rotarian of the Year and the Spirit Award, will be presented at upcoming meetings because the recipients were unable to attend the June 21 event.

Membership Director Scott Thompson recognized Guy Van der Werf with a sponsor pin for serving as a mentor to new member Dennis Gellhaus. Van der Werf ’s wife Leslie presented the pin.

in their current positions. New board positions include: Ron Gordon, director of international service; Kathy Groesbeck, foundation liaison; Thor Homme, sergeant at arms; Doug Mann, president-elect; and Bill Solms, membership director.

Evans pledged to devote his year to increasing membership, bolstering fundraising efforts and expanding the club’s capacity to meet grant requests. He said while clubs often fall into a “vicious circle” when facing challenges, he would like to turn that into “a virtuous circle” that capitalizes on the “commitment to service that is in our DNA” as Rotarians. He referred to the club’s rich history in the area of scholarships and community support through grants and the Duck Race and emphasized his commitment to maintaining programs despite declining membership.

“I think we are capable of doing even more,” he said.

Estes Valley Plein Air Show Starts Mid-August The Art Center of Estes Park is eagerly anticipating its inaugural Estes Valley Plein Air show to begin in mid-August.

Scheduled events include Estes Valley Plein Air Paint Out, Kid’s Paint Out, Nocturne Paint Out, Paint Our Town, and a Quick Draw & Auction that takes place on the morning of Saturday, September 1st in Riverside Plaza from 8:30 a.m. to Noon. Our Gala Reception for the opening of the show will take place the same evening from 5 – 8 p.m. at the Art Center of Estes Park. At this event approximately $11,000 in awards and gift certificates will be announced.

Get Your Play On, Estes Park Park and Recreation Month is winding down but there are still plenty of fun activities on the calendar. Estes Valley Recreation and Park District (EVRPD) wants you to keep getting outdoors to discover the power of play at your local parks and recreation facilities.

An initiative of the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA), Park and Recreation Month has been celebrated since 1985 to highlight the vital and powerful role local parks and recreation, such as EVRPD, play in conservation, health and wellness, and community involvement.

This week, EVRPD recommends these fun indoor and outdoor activities, with a highlight of a movie on Tuesday, July 24: • Find It Friday: For Friday, July 20, we continue our popular Find It Friday scavenger hunt. This Friday’s location will be along the Fish Creek Trail. This trail, located on the east side of town and recently reopened after repairs were completed from the 2013 flood, is an easy-access trail with lots of shade. Look for the riddle tube hidden along the trail.

Open it, read/take a picture of the riddle and replace it in the tube. Solve the riddle and then visit the Estes Valley Community Center with the answer or email it to matt@evrpd.com. The first three people with the correct answer will win a prize.

• Have a picnic in Cherokee Park. On Saturday, July 21, we recommend having a picnic. EVRPD offers numerous picnic areas and more than two dozen picnic shelters throughout our District. Chero-

kee Draw, located on U. S. Highway 36 between Lake Estes and Stanley Park, has several of these picnic shelters (available on a first-come, first-served basis) or bring some lawn chairs and picnic along the shores of Lake Estes. Please remember to pay the $5 daily use fee.

Estes Valley Restorative Justice Partnership (EVRJP) is seeking sponsors and golfers for its 7th Annual Golf Tournament to be held on August 11, 2018 at the Estes Park 18 Hole Golf Course.

Estes Park resident Denise Stookesberry, was recently selected to receive the 2018 National Association of Teachers of Singing “Joan Boytim Award for Independent Teachers.” This award is given each year to one teacher from each of the regional districts throughout the country. Recipients of the award are re-

quired to have an active voice studio and are chosen based on professional recommendations and curriculum taught. Stookesberry was able to use the award of $1,000 to attend the National Association of Teachers of Singing Convention held last month in Las Vegas.

She was honored at the opening ceremony of the convention and at a private luncheon.

The award is named after Joan Boytim, a leading vocal expert in the field of singing who holds a lifetime achievement award from NATS. It was through her generosity that the award was given.

Stookesberry currently teaches private voice lessons in Estes after retiring from fulltime teaching in the St. Louis area.

She is also active in the Estes community as the Director of the Estes Park Chorale and is involved with the Fine Arts Guild of the Rockies and the Estes Park Oratorio Society. She is an active singer and recitalist in the area.

Alpine Angler’s Present “Fishing The Big Thompson” With Kirk Bien Join Alpine Anglers an opportunity to learn about fishing the Big Thompson River from local fly shop owner and guide, Kirk Bien. Cultural Arts Council Presents “Tribute To Folk Music Legends” With Elk Hollow

The Cultural Arts Council of Estes Park presents the local musical group Elk Hollow in a "Tribute to Folk Music Legends V," Thursday, July 26, at 7:00 p.m. in Performance Park. There is no cost for admission, but freewill donations will be accepted to help fund programs of the Cultural Arts Council.

The concert marks the fifth annual "Tribute to Folk Music" presented by Elk Hollow featuring Gary Reeves and Jack Overly on vocals and guitar and Dmitri Galcovski on violin.

The radical folk singing movement began in the 1920s and by the 1930s was associated with social movements that carried on through the 40s, 50s, and 60s.

Key figures in this early period included Pete Seeger, Lead Belly and Woodie Guthrie. Seeger and The Weavers, a quartet he founded in 1948, were particularly instrumental in bringing folk music to widespread mainstream audiences, creating what is now known as the folk music revival and ultimately inspiring such other performers as Bob Dylan, Peter, Paul and Mary, the KIngston Trio, The New Christy Minstrels, Brothers Four, and many others.

Elk Hollow has appeared in numerous venues in the Estes Valley during the past 20 years. The group especially enjoys participating in benefit concerts that support local organizations and scholarship needs for Estes Park students.

Gary Reeves has been associated with the arts in Estes Park for many years, appearing in Fine Arts Guild Productions of: The Wizard of Oz," "Oklahoma," "South Pacific," "The King and I," and others. Gary, who often donates his time and talent to help local organizations has

composed number of original songs including "You'll Always Be a Good Friend," "It's a Heavy Load," and Heed the Call."

Jack Overly is also a singer/songwriter who like Gary has been involved in a number of local productions such as "Estes Park Sings:, "It's Showtime," and others. He also donates his time helping organize a wide variety of local groups to help with benefits for area charitable organizations. Some of Jack's compositions such as "Going Home"and "You're Home in Colorado," are include on their cd "Home In Colorado."

Dmitri Galcovski, a graduate of the Chisinau Music Academy of the Republic of Moldava, is a skilled concert violinist who studied violin with Lidia Dolinskaia at the Rachmaninov Music Lyceum in Chisinau. During his studies at the Academy of Music and Arts he also had a Master Class with Professor Neeman (Royal Academy of Music, UK). During this time Dmitri won the gold medal at the Luxembourg Festival of Young Musicians.

Come prepared to sing along with Elk Hollow during this special "Thursday Night Live" program featuring special songs from more than 15 music legends.

The Cultural Arts Council is celebrating twenty years of presenting outdoor concerts for the Estes Park community.

Merry Marthas Welcome Summer Residents The Merry Marthas welcome summer residents to attend their next meeting on Friday, July 27, at 9:30 a.m. at Presbyterian Community Church of the Rockies. Merry Marthas is a group of women who sew, knit, crochet or weave and then donate their finished projects to local charities. KEEP HOPE ALIVE! When Michelangelo climbed down the ladder after finishing his first day of painting on the Sistine Chapel ceiling his body ached, he was totally exhausted, and lacking the enthusiasm one might have imagined after beginning his project. That evening, after eating a lonely supper, he wrote a sonnet to his aching body. He closes that sonnet with these words: “I am no painter!” However, the next day…and for many days afterward…his aching body climbed back up the ladder and continued painting one of the greatest artistic masterpieces in the world.

What is the difference between someone who says: “I am no…” or “I can’t go on” and the one that finished that great endeavor? The difference is ‘Hope’, treasured in the heart and manifested in the life.

When you read the stories of great men and women of the Bible you often witness ‘hope’ lacking. When Elijah lost it he asked God to ‘take my life’. In the midst of his physical pain, having lost possessions, including family, Job rued the ‘day he was born’. A similar sense of hopelessness was faced by David, Moses, and others. Fortunately, with God’s help they moved past that sense of despair and accomplished great things.

In our time, we witness a great deal of hopelessness in the lives of so many in our society. Author Lewis Smedes tells of driving down a Los Angeles freeway shortly after the Los Angeles riots years ago and seeing a huge billboard pleading: “Keep Hope Alive!” The same reminder would be helpful in other times of national distress, as well as individual tragedy or struggle. We see the results of hopelessness everywhere we turn. Consider these words by one of our caring state representatives, Dafna Jenet in the Denver Post. Following the recent suicides of Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain, she wrote: “Suicide is one of the leading causes of death in our country. In 2016, we lost 45,000 sisters, brothers, mothers, fathers and friends to suicide. That is more than car accident related deaths. An epidemic is unfolding before our eyes and studies tell us that suicide continues to increase…This suicide epidemic knows no bounds.

It is affecting teens, veterans, and people of all races, identities and socio-economic backgrounds.”

‘Hopelessness’ is the cause of so many of these tragic losses of life. When someone ‘climbs off his ladder’ and says, “I am not worth anything as a …” and harbors that spirit of hopelessness and sense of worthlessness, taking one’s own life often is the result. In many other lives other self-hating activities become evident. Alcoholism and drug abuse and violent behavior often result from and lead to increasing hopelessness.

Dafna Jenet writes: “We must do more to help Coloradans locate and receive the support they desperately need.” But what? Perhaps a review of what ‘Hope’ is, can be a starting point in our individual efforts to help people who wrestle with hopelessness. Mental health professional, Lewis Smedes gives the components that contribute to ‘Hope’: ‘Wishing’, followed by ‘Imagining’, which grows into ‘Believing’. What does that say to you and me? When we sense that someone has lost or is losing hope, help them to ‘wish’ for something good and meaningful for them. Then help them ‘imagine’ it in their lives. Then help them to grow in their ‘belief’ that such good can happen for them.

Thankfully, Michelangelo did. He wished, imagined, believed…and painted, and that progression: wish, imagine, and belief, followed by action, is what we need to instill in every man, woman, youth and child we know. Let Hope Live!

Ladycats Basketball Summer Season

Another successful season on the court! Three teams competed in the Power2Play Sports league this summer, with 30 players from 3rd-9th grade. The highlight of the season was enjoyed by Coach Travis when his 8/9th grade girls earned a trophy in the season ending tournament.

Coaches Travis Machalek, Tonya & Byron Francis, Camdyn Arnold and John Fredrich combined efforts to improve skills for their players; a sincere thank you to these individuals for their volunteer efforts. Thanks also to the parents for their time and commitment to the program.

In addition, the end of the season hoops party proved to be plenty of fun.

Wendy Ash, representative for Bobcat Boosters, was on hand to provide the

players with awesome Bobcat and basketball party favors. A huge thank you to the Bobcat Boosters for the jerseys that they generously gifted to the Ladycat feeder program. These will be enjoyed and used by hoopsters for years to come.

Finally, thank you to Nolan Oberg and Estes Valley Community Center for providing court time to players during their busy June schedule. We are grateful for their accommodation and look forward to participating in EVRPD’s travel basketball program this fall.

Players are participating in a Summer Shooting Challenge which started July 1.

Shooters are encouraged to shoot 100 shots/day for 5,000 completed by school start. Winners of the challenge will be announced next month.

Volleyball Program Holds Skills Camp

Early in June, EPHS Volleyball Head Coach Sammi Coleson held her first annual middle and high school three day skills camp in Estes Park.

Overall, 25 girls participated and worked with high school and collegiate players as well as EPHS coaches on fundamental skills.

Coach Sammi said that this camp is “teaching the fundamentals and is all about fun!” Her hope is that this fun camp helps the girls brush up on their skills, learn new tricks and tips from college players, and remember why they love the game.

Camp coaches were Sammi Coleson, Kaylee Coleson (collegiate player at LCCC), Tori Passarelli (collegiate player at Mississippi State), and Kylen Christiansen (Senior Setter at State Champ Lyons High School).

EPHS Senior Molly Morgan said the camp was “super fun, and really helped us build new relationships with each other.” Coach Sammi expects to carry this momentum forward to CSU Team Camp where she’ll take two squads to participate in the four day overnight camp.

Conditioning continues on Tuesday

Estes Park Senior Citizens Center Menu and Thursday morning at 6:30 a.m., and Open Gyms began on July 9th on Monday and Wednesday evenings 6-8 p.m. in the high school gym.

The coaches and the girls are all looking forward to a productive volleyball season! The first high school game is August 23rd at Estes Park vs. Highland.

Dances Of Universal Peace July 21

You are invited to join us at Estes Park Yoga this Saturday, July 21st from 4:006:00 p.m. for the Dances of Universal Peace.

We are excited to welcome two guest dance leaders for their first visit to the Estes Park Dances of Universal Peace.

Wendy Welsh has been a dance leader for more than 25 years and will lead a Creation Story Dance, Alastair Bi-Rabbikum, which is an invitation to show up in service to the One Being, as well as a Zoroastrian Dance invoking the inner and outer Sun. We will also welcome Jahanara Magnus, who has been leading dances for more than 15 years, and her friend, Susan, who plays flute. She will lead a dance in Aramaic and a Native American dance called A’nea (E) Hibiwa’Hana, with drumming by Deborah Ogden. There will be additional dances from other cultures. No previous experience is required by those attending this circle of connections and community.

It has been fifty years since Samuel Lewis, influenced by the modern dance pioneer, Ruth St. Dennis, taught some of

his students the first Dances of Universal Peace, which have since spread across the continent and, due to the international network, are found in 28 other countries. These dances are sometimes done in nature, diverse places of worship, schools and universities.

“If you seek the good in every soul, you will always find it, for God is in all things; still more, God is in all beings.” Hazrat Inayat Khan, mentor to Samuel Lewis.

The dances are offered by donation; No one is denied joining in these interfaith practices with the repetition of sacred phrases and heartfelt movements. Please bring water, as some of the dances are exuberant; also, refrain from wearing fragrances, as some people have sensitivities.

The Dances are held every third Saturday of the month at Estes Park Yoga, Park Place Mall, 145 East Elkhorn. The next dance will be held August 18th.

Hermit Park Welcomes The Wolves Wings & Henhouse, WolfWood’s mission was to provide a safe refuge for unwanted and homeless wolves and wolf/dogs. Summer Enchanted Evening At The Baldpate With Authors Kay Turnbaugh And Lee Tillotson The Baldpate Inn is honored to announce a fascinating Summer Enchanted Evening on Wednesday, July 25th at 7 p.m. in the Baldpate Key Room for our talk: The Summer of 1926 at the Horseshoe Inn – The story of The Dining Room Girl.

About the authors: Kay Turnbaugh owned a weekly newspaper in Nederland, Colorado, for 27 years.

She is the author of four other books: Around Nederland, the Willa award-winning The Last of the Wild West Cowgirls, The Mountain Pine Beetle—Tiny but Mighty, and coauthor of the upcoming second edition of Denver/Boulder & Colorado’s Front Range, A comprehensive hiking guide.

Lee Tillotson is an avid outdoorswoman, a trait she must have inherited from her great-aunt Eleanor Parker. She has lived in Nederland, Colorado, for 45 years and taught physical education in the Nederland/Boulder area for 30 years.

She and her husband were Student Conservation Association supervisors in several different National Parks, including Rocky Mountain National Park, and in

1980 one of Lee’s SCA groups repaired the trail Eleanor rode to Fern Lake in 1926. Together, the authors have published an historical snowshoe guide at Eldora Ski Area and lead tours of the trail once a year for Boulder History Museum.

This free information session is part of our Summer Enchanted Evenings series that runs from June through September.

Youth Theatre Group To Present “How To Eat Like A Child” The Fine Arts Guild of the Rockies’ Youth Theatre has been working hard for two weeks to present their production of, How to Eat Like a Child, showing this Saturday and Sunday.

The fast-paced, upbeat, one hour show is ready to delight children of all ages who will be surprised by how well the youth theatre has prepared for the performances after their seven hour day, two-week camp.

“I think everyone will be really impressed by how hard the kids have worked and what a fantastic job they’re doing,” director Kerry Aiken says. Aiken, the former children’s librarian, worked with many of the children as toddlers during library story-time. “The older and younger kids are really getting along well,” Aiken says.

Eighteen kids ranging in age from 8-16 make up the group of performers and technicians. The student performers give various reasons for why this show is so entertaining and fun to perform.

“I love acting because it feels like you’re in your own world,” Lexi Richardson says. “You’re not yourself anymore.

You’re almost sitting in another person’s body.”

Bella Capo agrees, “You get to see how other people feel on the inside.”

Other kids name different reasons for their love of being on stage. “They usu-

ally tell you, ‘be really loud,’ then I get to be really loud!” Sam Workman says. “It’s super fun. Later on when I’m really old, I may not remember much, but I’ll remember that I got to go to acting camp and have so many moments that were so awesome.”

“I love the pressure of being on stage,” Drew Collinet says, “it’s such a rush.”

How to Eat Like a Child offers lessons to the audience on topics such as: how to beg for a dog, how to torture your sister, how to act after being sent to your room, how to stay home from school, and how to watch more television. Student performer, Zia Kissinger says that’s why this show is so much fun, “You get to be a kid—like yourself. ” While Kysa Marske and Lizzie Doan state that they love making people laugh.

Two technical students, Michael Capo and Sophie Kamprath, are excited for the performances when it really becomes their time to shine. Under the leadership of artist and theatre veteran, Greig Steiner, they have been creating the set, audio, lighting, costumes, and props. “I like it because it’s much more

hands-on,” Kamprath says.

While the show is based on a popular children’s book by Delia Ephron, it reaches into the imagination of adults as well, giving us all an opportunity to remember our childhoods, and laugh at the universality of the

experience.

“It’s fun to offer this to the audience,” performer Amelia Bryant says, “they are really going to enjoy it.”

No matter what the reason for joining theatre camp (“Because my grandma is the director”), the children all agree that the performances are going to be amaz-

ing.

Musical director Denise Stookesberry remarks, “I am excited to be working with Kerry and a terrific and talented cast. When the cast auditioned back in March, I was floored by how much talent there was in the room. I think we will all remember this production for years to come!”

Performances are Saturday, July 21st at 7 p.m. and Sunday, July 22nd at 2 p.m. at the Estes Park High School theatre.

We are offering for the first time in Estes Park, “The Healing Art of Dreams.” taught by Mary Jo Heyen, local Natural Dreamwork Practitioner.

This is a non-traditional class for the Art Center, in that the goal is not to complete a finished work of art but

rather to provide a new “art experience” allowing participants to access another vehicle for their art, using their dreams as inspiration. Following Mary Jo’s introductory remarks on dreamwork, there will be a short film, “Appointment with the Wise Old Dog,” based on the artwork of David Blum, a renowned orchestra conductor, who in his final months of life, created art from his dream images and found support and healing in them.

After the film, participants will be given time to capture one or more meaningful images from their own dreams on paper.

The focus will be on expressing the feeling associated with the dreams images, and not on creating a masterpiece. Experience in art is not required. The class will conclude with time for sharing. Paper and basic tools for drawing, sketching or coloring provided but if you’d prefer to bring a small set of supplies in order to utilize your favorite medium, feel free. This two hour workshop is free of charge, however, class size is to be no larger than 6-8. Michael Davis Free Performances At YMCA Of The Rockies

On Sunday, July 22, Michael Davis will be the guest musician for the 10:00 a.m. worship service in Hyde Chapel, at the YMCA of the Rockies.

He will also perform a concert at 7:00 p.m. in Hyde Chapel. The concert is free and open to the public.

While only 26 years old, violinist Michael W. Davis was named Concertmaster of the prestigious Louisville Orchestra, thrilling audiences for 30 years until his retirement from that position in 2015. All the while, critics have hailed him as “the essence of musicality” and continue to praise him for his “virtuosity” and “exquisite” playing.

Captivated at an early age by the beauty of the violin, Michael, a native of Albertville, Alabama, began studying music at age 7. As a 16 year old he was winner of the state’s MTNA Competition and named “Most Outstanding String Player.” He is a graduate of the worldrenowned Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University where he was awarded Bachelor and Master of Music degrees with distinction. Studying with James

Buswell at Indiana University, he also served as an Associate Instructor of Violin there while doing his graduate work.

Michael's biggest musical adventure of 2017 found him performing his original solo violin arrangement of "The Star Spangled Banner" for a sold-out Colorado Rockies game!

Featured in numerous chamber music and orchestral recordings, Michael also has two solo albums, Emmanuel and Amazing Grace.

He and his family currently reside in the beautiful Rocky Mountains of Colorado where Michael enjoys his passion for fly-fishing.

Wedding Day – Morning and Early Afternoon From my journal, March 10, 2018: “This is the day! It’s sunny, warm, in the 70s. Dulce made egg whites for her breakfast, still trying to fit into her wedding dress, while Lola swept the tiled front courtyard in her pajamas. My suitcase, purse, and shoes were quietly moved out of the living room and Lola took the ugly orange slipcovers off the living room fur-

niture. The two sofas and chair look brand-new and are rich looking, with their caramel-colored velour and dark brown leather. Lola told me Dulce will have the first shower this morning because she has a three hour hair and makeup appointment at 11:00. Lola has the same appointment at a different place at 12:00.”

Earlier in the week, Lola showed me the wedding dress hanging from a nail high on a wall in Lola and Felipe’s bedroom. The dress with its long train was completely shrouded in thin white sheets carefully safety-pinned around it. Sometime this morning, the dress was taken down, unwrapped from its coverings, and laid out lovingly on Dulce’s bed.

I went with Lola in a taxi to her hair and makeup appointmen t. The salon was the whole first floor of a small house on a residential street. Inside, I saw one styling chair, one sink, an array of makeup, brushes, combs and tools, and an open staircase that led to living quarters above. When Lola was done, she looked unfamiliar and garish, like an actress made up for a play. Soon after we got home, Dulce breezed in with her veil hanging over an arm. The veil and a silver comb had been firmly attached to

There was a flurry of buttoning and adjusting veil, dress, and long train while all three chattered in Spanish, mostly at the same time. At this point, Mario, friend of Paco, arrived in a shining black sedan decorated with a flower bouquet stuck on the hood, another large bouquet on the back, and a spray of flowers on each back door handle.

Dulce put on high-heeled shoes and sailed elegantly toward the front door, while Bri and I desperately grabbed at folds of lacy train and followed behind.

The bride tumbled into the backseat; I tucked a dangling leg inside the car, then gently pushed large amounts of dress and train toward Dulce. As I stood smiling next to the car, Lola suddenly clutched my arm and said in rapid Spanish to go now, with them, in the front seat, that she and Felipe would come later. I grabbed my purse and camera and got in shyly next to the driver. Bri wedged herself in the backseat and Mario drove us slowly, like royalty, through the streets of Salamanca.

Rocky Ridge Music In The Mountains Concert This Sunday

Rocky Ridge Music Center (RRMC) proudly presents the next concert of the 2018 “Music in the Mountains” faculty concert series on Sunday, July 22nd at 3:00 p.m. This performance, at the beautiful Rocky Ridge Music Center Concert Hall nestled between Longs Peak and Twin Sisters, will feature the distinguished faculty of RRMC’s Young Artist Seminar.

The concert opens with pianist Nathan Hess performing two selections from

Claude Debussy’s Préludes, Book 1.

The program continues with flutist Cobus DuToit, violinist Wynne WongRife, violist Ilona Vukovic-Gay, and cellist Mary Beth Tyndall performing a work by composer Jacques Castérède entitled Ombres Et Clartes.

Closing the first half of the concert is the Quintet in G major, Opus 77 performed by the Southwest String Quartet (David Rife, Wynne Wong-Rife, Ilona

Electrifying Colorado audiences for over 20 years-July 21st 7 p.m.

This eclectic band starts with blues, rock, soul, and R&B tradition, then explodes that tradition with musical layers full of energy. Blues DoGS is a unique group of scholars, doctors, lawyers, business owners, teachers, and laborers who all share a passion for music. The DoGS have shared the stage with many artists including: Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Wynonna Judd, George Throgood, and Glenn Kaiser, and have been rocking community events all along the Front Range for three decades. Concert-goers can’t help but have a good time as Blues DoGS’ joy of playing great music infects the crowd and gets them dancing and singing along. The show is filled with an entertaining and danceable mix of clas-

sics, with a Blues DoGS twist that highlights the talents of all band members.

The concert concludes with a movement from Tango: Por Una Cabeza by composer Carlos Gardel performed by the Southwest String Quartet. The name of the work is a Spanish horse-racing phrase meaning "by a head" which refers to a horse winning a race narrowly - by

just the length of its head. The song was featured in a famous tango scene in Martin Brest's movie Scent of a Woman, in the opening scene of Steve Spielberg's Schindler's List, and in James Cameron's True Lies.

House Calls: Delivering Library Services To Homebound Are you or is someone you know homebound? Do you know someone that loves to read but is unable to travel to the library? For you, or for that special person you know, there is a wonderful solution currently being used by many of our locals. The Estes Valley Library provides a delivery service to residents of our town and valley that do not have access to the Library due to a temporary or ongoing condition.

For the past year, I have had the great fortune of coordinating this vital service. It’s called House Calls, and it ensures that our homebound residents can sustain their love of reading, listening and learning. It is a joy to see the faces of happy patrons when we can deliver books and audiobooks, all selected based on their interests, right to their residence. Think of it as meals-onwheels for the mind.

If you’re a resident of the Estes Valley Public Library District and unable to visit either the downtown location or Recreation Center “Twig” due to one of the following conditions, then consider signing up for the House Calls program.

To be eligible for the service, participants must meet one or more of the following criteria. You have: • a short or long-term illness.

• visual limitations • physical challenges • non-driver status • or, you’re a caregiver whose responsibilities make it difficult to visit the library.

Participants in the program may reside in private homes, a retirement village,

or an assisted living facility. Delivery times match the needs of the patron.

Fines are exempt to users of the House Calls service, except for the cost of damaged or lost items. And renewals are possible as long as the item hasn’t been requested by another library patron.

How are materials selected? The House Calls patron can select specific items for their own reading, listening or viewing enjoyment. Or, if preferred, the House Calls Librarian can choose items based on the genre choices that are indicated on the application. Any materials available in the Estes Valley Library are available to House Calls patrons. That inventory includes regular or large print books, magazines, DVDs, MP3s and traditional audiobooks.

If you’ve decided that reading is no longer enjoyable or that you can no longer read standard print, don’t despair. We can get you on board with the services of the Colorado Talking Book Library (CTBL). The CTBL provides a tremendous collection of audio, Braille, and Large Print books to keep patrons connected to reading and adventure.

Volunteers from the Estes Valley Library Friends & Foundation are busy sorting donations and making preparations for this year’s Summer Used Book Sale happening August 3 through 5. The sale offers book lovers a treasure trove of bargains, while raising vital funds to support the library throughout the year.

This summer’s book sale will feature more than 30,000 gently-used books, CDs and, DVDs for sale.

The three-day event takes place at the Ridgeline Hotel, adjacent to the Estes Park Conference Center, located at the junction of U. S. Highways 7 and 36, with plenty of parking available from the Stanley Avenue entrance.

Friends & Foundation members will get the first opportunity to purchase items at the Preview Night from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Friday, August 3. Those who are not already Friends & Foundation members may stop by the Estes Valley Library and purchase a membership

or purchase one online. Volunteers will also sell memberships at the door on Preview Night.

Recycling Our Leftover Trash By: Judi Smith

After WWII the United States, in an effort to put everyone back to work, encouraged buying as a patriotic activity.

We began to applaud “keeping up with the Joneses.” Hand-me-downs lost favor.

For better or worse, we had a “new” goal.

However, this resulted in an unforeseen side effect. Landfills began filling up at an increased rate as people sent their discards “away.” In the 1950s, deposit laws were passed, and we began collecting glass bottles. By the 80s, we were collecting cans, newspapers and metals. By the 90s, trash companies were offering recycling services. Single-streaming was designed to make recycling easy, but, in truth, it increased the complexity of the process.

From an industry perspective: Today, recycling is in a constant state of flux, not always based upon recyclability, but heavily dependent upon market price for profitability. 1. Certain contaminates can damage the equipment. 2. Sorting is done by weight, shape, and color – which can place limitations on acceptable input. 3. Market price (and profitability) fluctuates by supply and demand. Like everyone else, Material Recovery Facilities (MRF) must pay their overhead (utilities, space, repairs, equipment, etc.) and their employees like to get a paycheck. They cannot operate in the negative. People complain about what MRFs or transfer stations do not take. They rarely complain about what happens after it is taken.

From the public’s point of view: Often, MRFs continue to accept what they do not recycle in the hope that, someday, the market will change and make recycling more profitable. However, there is a difference between accepting and recycling. In order to do an

efficient job of disposal, we must not only know where we send our trash, but what happens to it next.

The first problem is inconvenience.

Our society prefers easy, especially when it comes to trash. If the average individual must walk an extra six steps to recycle something, chances are they won’t. There are two ways to resolve this. Some solutions; everywhere there is a garbage can, place a recycling can and convince the American people that even “just one” makes a difference.

The second problem is trust. We have discovered the difference between accepted and recycled, and it is confusing us. Now that we have discovered that we have choices about disposal methods, price is not the only consideration. We want to know where our trash is going so that we can make wise decisions.

This leads us to third problem we face; confusion.

When individuals see a recycling can, that does not answer the question of what goes into it, especially for the traveler. Each country, each state, each community, even each MRF recycles under its own, unique system. Therefore, the answer lies in education. And, in our multi-language tourist based community, we need to post both words and pictures of what should go into each trash container.

Yes, the United States discards too much “stuff ” but we can improve the way we get rid of our overage.

The next meeting of the League of Women Voters and Community Recycling Committee is 10 a.m., Wed., Aug. 1, at the Estes Valley Library.

1,049 Mile Iditerod Runner To Speak At Rocky Mountain 101 In Allenspark How many of you have ever run in a 5K? Or just run a mile? Can you imagine running 1,049 miles in the dead of an Alaskan winter? Well, that’s what TedX speaker Jorge Latre did this spring during the famed Iditasport Impossible, the ultimate test of endurance. He’ll be sharing his story at Rocky Mountain 101 at The Old Gallery in Allenspark at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, July 27.

“I knew very little about Alaska’s Iditarod Trail,” he said.

“Maybe I just wanted the badge of a 1,000-mile self-supported winter crossing of Alaska on foot. But as I started to learn about the Trail, my curiosity took

madly in love with the Trail.”

“This presentation will take me back to the Iditarod Trail, its magic, running dogs, tiny hamlets, and remote wilderness.” he said.

This is the fourth year of the speaker series, which is designed to educate and enhance the Rocky Mountain and wilderness experience for area residents and visitors. Each features a 45-minute presentation by a speaker and a 15minute Q&A opportunity. Admission is $10, with proceeds benefiting the nonprofit center for community and the arts.

Fay Roberts Fay Roberts, 86, died July 7, at Fair Acres Nursing Home in Greeley, following a lengthy illness. Fay was born in Crystola, Colorado, on June 18, 1932, to Fredie and Evelyn Roberts. He was raised on the family ranch in Woodland Park, Colorado, where both parents lived their remaining lives.

In the summer of 1951, Fay was working at livery stable in Manitou Springs, “wrangling dudes.” Verna, on summer break after her junior year in high school, had travelled to Manitou on vacation from Emporia, Kansas, with one of the activities on her itinerary being a trail riding expedition. As fate would have it, Fay was working the day Verna appeared for her ride, and that is how the two met. The friendship forged that day on the trail blossomed into a long distance romance after Verna returned to Kansas, where she finished her senior year in high school. The night she graduated, Verna left Kansas for Woodland Park, where she and Fay were married on May 22, 1952. Three sons were born to them during the time they lived Woodland Park, where Fay worked as a farrier and stone mason.

In 1969, Fay and Verna moved their family to the Estes Park area, where, Fay continued his work as a stone &

brick mason for many years before taking a job at the historic McGregor Ranch.

He worked there for over twenty years, managing the angus cattle herd, restoring old buildings and equipment on the property, and performing other caretaking duties. In 1996 Fay retired from the ranch, moving with Verna to Greeley, Colorado.

Fay is survived by his wife, Verna, of 66 years, three sons and their spouses/partners, Fred Roberts & Peg Graf, Bill & Pam Roberts, Guy & Cheryl Roberts, sisters, Bonnie Groy, & Hildred Davis, brother-in-law Chuck Davis, all residing in Colorado, brother-in-law Chuck Hammer, residing in New Mexico, 14 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Fay was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Mildred Hammer.

Fay was a kind, quiet and humble man who loved deeply and was greatly beloved by all who knew him.

A service will be held at the Ponder Chapel of the YMCA in Estes Park, Colorado, on July 29, at 1:00. Friends may view an online obituary and offer condolences at www.dignitymemorial.com/obituaries. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Wyatt Steven Walker There is no foot too small that it cannot leave an imprint on the world.

Wyatt Steven Walker entered this world on Saturday, June 30, 2018. He was welcomed with abundant love by his parents Dan and Katie Walker and his big brother Mason at the Estes Park Hospital in Estes Park, Colorado.

After just 16 days he passed away peacefully in the arms of his mother and father at Children’s Hospital in Aurora, Colorado.

In his short time with us Wyatt’s fighting spirit was evident. His delicate hand wrapped around the finger of his parents, grandparents (and soft cuddly animals) and we all prayed that his health would improve. Sadly this was not to be the case for baby Wyatt. The virus he had contracted was too much for his little body. Wyatt gave us a lifetime of love in the brief time he was with us and for this we

are forever grateful.

Wyatt is survived by his mother and father, Katie and Dan Walker, along with his brother Mason (2) of Estes Park, Colorado.

In addition to his parents and big brother, Wyatt is survived by his paternal grandparents, Larry and Vickie Walker of Bailey, Colorado and his maternal grandparents, Phil and Jane Pitzer of Nederland, Colorado. Wyatt is also survived by a multitude of loving great-grandparents, (great and grand) aunts and uncles, cousins and friends near and far and medical care angels who did their best to help.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 21, 2018 at 10:30am at Saint Rita’s Catholic Church in Nederland, Colorado, with a reception following. Wyatt will be buried near his Uncle Steven Pitzer who preceded him in death.

Cameron Lee Cameron Sean Lee sadly left this life and our company all too soon on Wednesday, July 11th, 2018. Born Dec. 3, 1985.

He is survived by his mother, Michelle Acers, Ryan Cornell, his sister Shannon Lee Burton, Her husband David Burton and nephews, Shaun, Tyler and Blake. He was preceded in death by his father Jack R. Lee, his grandparents, Stephen Acers and Francis and Eleanor Lee. He was primarily a talented carpenter throughout most his adult life working with our beloved Ryan Cornell, but more recently had become a Security Officer, and was really enjoying that career.

Cameron grew up in Estes Park, Colorado from the age of two and attended school at Estes Park High School.

Being mountain bred, he was a lover of all things outdoors and was a great fan of “Bear Grylls” and his survival skills.

His enthusiasms encompassed hiking, hunting and fishing, camping and skiing. He also had a great love for the BBC’s “Top Gear” and all things Fast and Furious. Though he was a mountain boy, with his own fur coat, he always dreamed of Florida.

Cameron was a good, loyal friend and devoted son. He lit up a room with friends, if not only with his personality, then with his collection of party lights.

He was known from childhood through adulthood to start all conversations with “SUP?!”

Cameron was a personal champion to

his Mom, calling him ‘Cammy.’ With the special bond they had, he was always ready to jump on any adventures she invented. He was raised as a baby, seven days a week, at Hidden Valley Ski Area, while his Mom taught skiing, and was always ready to jump off Trail Ridge and ski out-of-bounds with his Mom. Cameron also loved outdoor adventures with his Dad and had a close relationship with him. Sadly, he was present during his father’s passing and attempted to resuscitate him which did affect him in later times.

Cameron especially loved to be helpful to others and continually showed his compassion and good nature. He was truly a good and kind person.

There will be a dimmer sunrise, a sadder song, missing joy, and a hole to fill with the loss of this beloved friend, brother and son, our sweet Cameron.

He will be greatly missed, but finally at peace.

There will be a service held at The American Legion Post 119 in Estes Park on Saturday, July 28 beginning at 4:00 p.m., followed immediately by a celebration of his life, and comradery between friends and family. Food will be provided, however any additional potluck dishes shared at this event will be greatly appreciated and enjoyed, but certainly not required. Stephen S. Graves Graves, Stephen S. of Clarkston; passed away Thursday, May 17, 2018; age 72; loving husband of Barbara for 45 years; amazing father of Christopher & Jason (Marcee) Graves; proud grandfather to Asher, Rylee and Laycee. Steve was born November 29, 1945 in Boulder, CO and grew up in Estes Park, CO. He later attended the University of Colorado Boulder where he

lettered in football for the Buffalos. He had a successful career with American Motors and Chrysler. Steve will forever be remembered as a loving family man, loyal friend and proud grandpa. Memorial visitation was held at Lewis E. Wint & Son Funeral Home, Clarkston, on Friday, June 8. In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made to the American Heart Association.

To The Town Board Members Regarding The Loop Project I am occasionally amused by a cynical saying I have heard. The saying is “No good deed ever goes unpunished.”

In the 47 years that I have located my home and business in this town, I have thought that this saying could be paraphrased to read “No good project in Estes ever goes unopposed” From the creation of a sign code in the 1970s that reduced the neon jungle which had overgrown our local businesses to the creation of the Urban Renewal Authority in the 1980s trying to improve the pedestrian environment in our central business district, there have regularly been residents who protested that these project were unnecessary and harmful to their personal concerns.

And now responding to the deplorable traffic congestion that impedes the movement of residents and visitors alike, a project to provide desperately needed traffic improvement is being met by objections of those who maintain that there is no traffic problem, and this plan won’t fix it anyway.

I wish to offer counter arguments to the objections to the Loop Plan that I have heard most frequently.

1) The Loop Project will provide only a few minutes reduction to the time spent in the peak traffic gridlock.

I think that this oft repeated statistic is as inaccurate as the information issued by the present employees of the White House in Washington. It doesn’t require a traffic engineer to predict that 2 lanes of traffic traveling in the same direction will move more vehicles more rapidly than one lane. I have often observed this fact during the afternoon egress that becomes a bottleneck on eastbound Moraine Avenue’s one lane leading through town. This impediment often extends as far back as Beaver Point a mile to the west. The 2 eastbound lanes provided by the Loop Project must certainly reduce the driving time by more than a few minutes.

2) The National Park is already overcrowded. Increasing the westbound traf-

fic flow through town will only worsen the problem.

This argument ignores the fact that Moraine Avenue is the major artery serving over a dozen businesses, over a hundred homes, and (oh yes) the YMCA campus which is the largest lodging facility in town. Residents and businesses west of town will certainly benefit from the improved traffic flow.

The National Park will need to deal with its own congestion.

3) The Loop Project will require the acquisition of private property.

Well, yes. That is often how public improvements are created. The land for the town library and its adjacent parking lot, the land for Riverside (Hix) Plaza, the land for the West Riverside (Baldwin) Park, and the land for the critical Moccasin Circle Drive to our hospital, these and many other public works have been made possible by the acquisition of private property.

This project has also addressed improving the safety of the very hazardous intersection of Moraine Avenue and Crags Drive. Should it require a catastrophic collision at this location to convince my fellow residents that traffic safety is a more pressing issue than access to donuts?

Obviously our elected officials want to give attention to the concerns of their constituents. But this does not require passing a vital decision to a public vote, simply because the issue is a source of controversy. Our public leaders bear the responsibility to be leading.

I urge the Board Members to continue with this well reasoned project to alleviate the perennial traffic congestion that has been allowed to impede our movement around our town and to demean our image as a refuge for “the huddled masses yearning to breathe free” or at least to breathe a lesser amount of exhaust fumes in traffic gridlock. Then maybe we can all breathe more easily.

A Letter From A Restorative Justice Participant To The Editor: In the late winter months, I found myself in a conflicting situation. A group of people decided to come to the bar I was currently working at and wanted to have a private party late into the evening. At that time, I did not realize my mistake of having them past 2 a.m. because at that time I did not know Colorado’s liquor laws.

Serving alcohol, I now know after 2 a.m., is illegal.

The cops were called for a noise complaint and found me behind the bar serving drinks to the private party. They

made the group leave and gave me a ticket and then informed me of the law I just had broken. The Colorado serving law for bars and liquor stores is and states: On the premises, sale is allowed from 7 a.m. to 2 a.m.

I now know the laws and have become more knowledgeable in my profession as a bartender. I have learned my actions had effects on others as well as myself. I now know as well with the information I have gained how to resolve what I have done and help other people in the bartending profession not make the same mistake as I did.

Remembering Dr. Robert Krear To The Editor: Dr. Bob Krear was a writer, professor of biology, and seasonal forest ranger. Bob was on the 1956 expedition to Alaska's Brooks Range -- which in 1980 became the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR). He described it as "the only such sanctuary of its kind for arctic wildlife on the face of the planet!"

Bob was my father's boyhood friend in Verona, Pennsylvania. They played outdoors, they explored the woods and the Allegheny River. Certainly Bob experienced bonds with the earth, the bliss of sitting in a mud puddle after a summer rain, eating a hot tomato right from the patch, ice skating on the school grounds, observing forest animals, collecting rocks and leaves.

He studied forestry at Penn State, trained with the Tenth Mountain Division, and fought in the Italian Alps. He made the heart rending decision to call off his engagement to the woman he loved, a Texas oil heiress, and followed the pull of the wilderness. He explored

Alaska's Pribilof Islands to study seals, was on an ecological expedition to Labrador and Quebec and studied and re-established sea otters in western Aleutian Islands.

Bob's memorial in Estes Park began with military rifle salute and taps. People spoke of their love of his impressive accomplishments, congeniality and thoughtfulness.

Bob Krear was an expert on earth’s abundance. He and others, including the indigenous Gwich'in people, tell us of special places and why they are important to preserve. We should take their advice and fight to save the last remaining pristine ecosystems.

On Dec. 15, 2017 the US Congress passed its tax bill, including a rider to allow oil drilling in the coastal plain, "the biological heart," of ANWR, an offset to help pay for tax reductions for the rich. Aware of this, Bob Krear died the next day.

A Note To The Planning Commission Dear Planning Commission: Dear Friends of Estes Park : On behalf of the residents of Estes Park who are fans of the history of this important area I would like to speak on behalf of the zoning change for the home on Wonderview Avenue built in 1904 by Freelan Oscar Stanley and his wife Flora Stanley. This home uses an early English-American style of post Georgian Colonial Revival architecture as designed and lived in by the Stanley family until the late 1940s. The architectural integrity of this building certainly lends character to the other adapted architectural styles of our rustic rural community, but the building, even if it was not an architectural treasure is most significant because of the man who designed it and oversaw its construction. Estes Park, the contemporary small city owes much of its success to the influence, and money of F.O. Stanley.

Not discounting the hotel in any way, but focusing on the generosity and intellectual accomplishments of Mr. Stanley, his home certainly deserves to be saved and used as a monument to his memory and a method for thanking him as well as remembering his many contributions

to this community. Whether we begin with the Power Plant and move swiftly ahead to the other utilities he brought to this under developed area, or look at the vast quantity of land that he saved from early over development or move ahead to the new modern and totally fabulous Recreation Center built on land that was gifted to the town of Estes Park by Mr. Stanley, we need a fitting memorial to F.O. Stanley. This home needs to be purchased by the 501c3 and used to represent his generous contributions to our town and to the National Park. As a historic landmark and a museum, this property can be managed in such a way as not to intrude on the neighbors quiet or privacy. (Mr. Stanley was a very private person ad enjoyed the quiet beauty of the area and would have found anything that upset the neighbors as a personal affront to his own sense of peace.)

I am asking the Town Board and the Planning Committee to decide in favor of the usage of this property as the memorial which the Stanleys so rightly deserve!
