The Estes Park Police Department's community service officers (CSOs) are at their posts for the summer. These hardworking seasonal employees serve as ambassadors in the downtown corridor. This year the CSOs will be focused on the Elkhorn Avenue intersections, aiming to keep pedestrians out of intersections between walk cycles and cars out of intersections during walk cycles. During times of extremely heavy vehicle traffic, they will be seen directing traffic as necessary to ease congestion. In addition, CSOs will be on foot patrol, enforcing parking regulations, conducting parking surveys and assisting sworn officers. The CSOs are supervised by Officer Curt Plassmeyer. Estes Park Police Department's downtown staffing for 2018: Officer Curt Plassmeyer moved from Idaho to Estes Park with his wife and two daughters in 2014. Curt has been a law enforcement officer for 10 years. He is currently the school resource officer during the school year and the CSO supervisor during the summer. Curt also conducts violent intruder (ALICE) trainings for the community, is a member of the Rooftop Rodeo committee, and coaches youth basketball and volleyball. David Phares grew up in Estes Park and was part of the Estes Park High School graduating class of 2018. He will attend Colorado State University to study Criminology and will pursue a career in law enforcement. He has a passion for traveling and is very excited to work downtown and meet people from around the world as they visit Estes Park. Michael Madachy is a native of Colorado. This is Michael's third year as a CSO. He currently attends Colorado State University where he is earning a degree in Criminology with a minor in Business. He is happy to be back for another year serving Estes Park's citizens and guests. Brady Hann is a Colorado native, born and raised in the Denver metro area. Brady is currently attending Colorado State University, studying Sociology with a concentration in Criminal Justice and a double minor in Business Administration and Ethnic Studies. He has a passion for both participating in and watching sports.

Alex Winters was born in Wisconsin and moved to Colorado at a young age. He attends Colorado State University and is pursuing a degree in Criminology with a minor in Business Administration. Alex loves to hike, hunt, and experience the outdoors which has led him to work at the Estes Park Police Department. Fiona Tanner is happy to be back for her second year serving Estes Park as a CSO. She is pursuing a degree in Sociology with a minor in Spanish at Colorado State University and looks forward to a career in Criminal Justice. She will graduate with her bachelor's degree in May, 2019 and will work toward her doctorate in the Social Sciences. Carleigh Chrastil is a native of Estes Park. She currently attends Aims Community College in Greeley. Carleigh is pursuing a career in law enforcement and is working to become a police officer by earning a degree in Criminal Justice. She has a love for the town that she grew up in and a passion for helping others. Sylvia Urdangaray is a local who recently graduated from the University of Northern Colorado. She has a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry with an emphasis in Forensic Science and a minor in Criminal Justice. She is pursuing a career in law enforcement. Sylvia is excited to be back in her hometown for her second summer as a CSO. These officers will be visible throughout the downtown area seven days a week from Memorial Day until mid-August and on weekends through September. Police Chief Wes Kufeld, who once served as a CSO himself, believes in the importance of this program. He stated," We strive to provide a safe environment for all who enjoy Estes Park. Our CSOs are a great addition and they are ready to assist with public safety needs in our downtown area." Free Household Hazardous Waste Collection This Saturday, June 9 The household hazardous waste dropoff returns and will take place this Saturday, June 9, from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Town of Estes Park Water Division shop, 577 Elm Rd. Unwanted household paints, stains, cleaners, yard and garden chemicals, used oil, adhesives, solvents, gasoline, batteries and other household chemicals may be brought to the collection site for proper disposal. This service is provided free of charge by the Town of Estes Park Water Division, Larimer County Solid Waste, Upper Thompson Sanitation District and Estes Park Sanitation for the benefit of the community and the environment. The last hazardous waste cleanup took place in 2017 after a seven-year hiatus due to budgetary constraints. Almost
200 vehicles came to the collection last year, protecting the environment and watershed from dangerous contaminants by properly disposing of them. Items that cannot be accepted include commercial waste, fluorescent lightbulbs, fire extinguishers materials containing asbestos, explosives, radioactive waste including smoke detectors, propane containers and containers larger than five gallons. U.S. 34 Overnight Closure For Larimer County Bridge Improvements Closure planned June 11 from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. The Big Thompson canyon continues to see improvements along US 34. Kiewit Infrastructure Co. and Larimer County are working to replace four resident access bridges this summer. Next week, two of the bridges will begin to take shape, when Kiewit begins to install the girders. This work will require a handful of overnight shut downs in order to safely place the large steel beams. Monday, June 11, at 9 p.m. – Tuesday, June, 12 at 6 a.m. US 34 will be closed at Idlewild Lane for the Idlewild Bridge girder set. There will be no throughtraffic on US 34. Anyone looking to travel through the Big Thompson canyon between Estes Park and Loveland during this time is
asked to use the US 36 detour (US 287 to CO 66 to US 36). Only a few additional overnight closures will be required for the bridge construction. Construction activities for the US 34 CDOT project will continue in the canyon this summer and throughout the fall. Drivers could encounter up to 20-minute delays this summer for paving operations which will only take place at night and not during weekends. The charge(s) are merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty. On May 19 at 9:26 p.m. police received a REDDI report of a driver in the 400 block of N. St. Vrain Ave. The 36 year old female driver from Estes Park was found to be driving under revocation and was issued a summons and released. On May 24 at 9:25 p.m. police were called to a verbal disturbance at 1040 Big Thompson Ave. Upon arrival they charged a 31 year old male from Estes Park with third degree assault, obstructing a peace officer and introducing contraband. The victim was 22 years old. The male was transported to
Larimer County Detention Center. On May 31 at 10:49 p.m. police contacted four 19 year old Estes Park males and charged them with underage possession and consumption of alcohol at 380 Community Drive, Stanley Park, after an anonymous tip. They four were later released to a parent/guardian. On June 1 at 10:17 p.m. police were called to a disturbance at 1010 S. St. Vrain. Upon arrival they charged a 49 year old female from Commerce City, CO with domestic violence, prohibitive use of weapons, reckless driving, DUI, DUI enhancer and harassment and transported her to Larimer County Detention Center. The victim in this case was 43 years old.

Rescue Of Baby Great Horned Owl On Monday Monday, a June 44, one of the baby ay Great Horned owls, pictured on the front page of the EP News on May 11, fell out of the nest, possibly when trying to fledge. Bird expert extraordinaire, Scott Rashid was called on to help. EPPD personnel roped off the area so bystanders couldn’t get close to the baby and Scott arrived, banded the young owl with a numbered leg band and then placed the young owl high in a tree, near its parents. Dr. Mark Macelwee Resigns From Estes Park Medical Center It is with sincere regret, Estes Park Medical Center announced Dr. Mark MacElwee has decided to accept a position at an academic medical center outside of Colorado and tendered his resignation this morning. During his six years with Estes Park Medical Center, Dr. MacElwee has provided exceptional medical care and we are thankful to him for his service. Dr. MacElwee will continue to see patients in the clinic over the next four months, until the third week of September. A search will begin immediately to recruit a permanent replacement physi-
cian and, if necessary, secure temporary physician coverage so our patients receive uninterrupted care. Estes Park Rotary Hosts Thank You Luncheon Program By: Rita DuChateau
Thousands of little yellow racing ducks have been stored for the next Duck Race, but over 60 big sponsor ducks were presented to their owners at a luncheon May 24. The Rotary Club of Estes Park recognized the generosity of major, associate and in-kind sponsors for the critical role they played in the 30th Annual Estes Park Rotary Duck Race Festival. The 2018 event raised over $127,000 for 68 Estes Valley charities. Sponsorships help underwrite major travel prizes and race operations, such as race day entertainment, printing of adoption forms and posters, website design and hosting. A total of 6,699 duck adoptions were sold, with $19 of the $20 adoption fee going directly to the nonprofit charities and organizations. The Ridgeline Hotel, a major sponsor provided meals for all sponsors that attended the May 24 luncheon and program. Brad Rosenbaum, 2018 ‘Big Duck’ presided over the program, thanking all sponsors and emphasizing that the race has been a 30-year success story due to the generosity of Estes Park area businesses. Rotary Club of Estes Park member Harriette Woodard handled luncheon arrangements and décor. “We are so appreciative of our sponsors, stepping up in huge ways to support local charities, despite the challenges they’ve faced with the road closures, ” Rosenbaum said. Sponsors are now able to display their personalized ducks in restaurants, offices and lobbies to carry the Duck Race spirit forward. Students at Eagle Rock and Estes Park High School pro-

It’s dry. People are speculating that Longs Peak will be open to non-technical ascents much earlier than usual. Maybe old Fall River Road too. The pine pollen is coating everything. Literally. The wildflowers are blooming before they’re supposed to. We hope campers have enough sense to burn fires only in designated fire rings because the mere thought of a forest fire causes us to break out in a sweat. The lines at Safeway, at the cinnamon roll stores, and into— and out of—Rocky Mountain National Park are growing longer by the day. The season is upon us. Are you ready? Elected Officials & Planning Commission To Discuss Comprehensive Plan June 14 The Town of Estes Park and Larimer County have scheduled a joint study session of the Town Board of Trustees, the Board of County Commissioners, and the Estes Valley Planning Commission at 6 p.m., June 14, 2018 in the Town Board Room of Town Hall, 170 MacGregor Ave. This meeting, the next in a series of meetings among the three official bodies every four months, is slated primarily for discussion of an anticipated rewritten Estes Valley Comprehensive Plan, particularly the process for getting the plan underway, according to Community Development Director Randy Hunt. Community members are encouraged to observe the meeting; public comment is not included on the study session agenda. Meeting topics include: • The expected time frame for a new plan, from beginning to completion; • An approximate budget and other resource availability, including potential grant sources; • A brief outline of components, including other plans, already adopted or expected in the near future; • Preliminary identification of key
stakeholders and strategies to involve them in the planning process. The Town and County share a mutual aim: replacing the 1996 Comprehensive Plan with an essentially new plan with 21st century goals and policies. Some useful elements in the existing plan may be retained or updated. It’s expected that much of the Estes Valley Development Code will be revised in conjunction with a rewritten plan. The Estes Valley model for land-use regulations is unique in Colorado. The Town of Estes Park and Larimer County partnered in the mid-1990s to develop the Estes Valley Comprehensive Plan, a unified vision for land-use planning in both the incorporated and unincorporated areas of the Estes Valley. In 2000, they jointly established the Estes Valley Development Code. The Planning Commission reviews development and subdivision proposals within the entire Estes Valley, though the final decisionmaking authority lies with the Larimer County Commissioners and Town Board for their respective jurisdictions. The quartet reunited in Estes Park, reminisced about the joy of making music, and in 1983 put an ad in the local paper: the Estes Park Village Band (EPVB) was born. The size of the band varies: for most of the year just over thirty musicians gather at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday nights in the high school band room. A few years ago sixty-four were on the stage for the July 4 concert at Performance Park. Karen Crislip and Gary Brown continue today as the senior EPVB members. Gary: “Playing in the band is a wonderful community coming together; it’s a
great hobby and fine recreation. There’s the satisfaction of playing in a group, like singing in a choir, all working toward one beautiful sound. Music is part of the human spirit; it’s both cross-cultural and cross-generational. It’s thrilling to think about the composers and keeping their names and music and tradition alive.” Karen: “A dozen were there the first evening; I was a young mom who lived and worked outside town; it was an opportunity for me to meet others in the community. I still rehearse on Tuesday evenings and now play oboe. One summer I played sitting next to a very special ‘other musician’--my young grandson in the trumpet section! Chuck gave me a chance, and the rest is history.” Randy: “My father played the trumpet. I’ve almost always been in the band: high school and college. The bottom line—I enjoy it. It’s something you can do all your life. I get (after the commitment) fellowship, people with similar interests. And it lets me do things like play in the Rose Bowl Parade.” The EPVB has been led by these directors: Mark St. John, Gary Elting, Ted Stuart, Chuck Varilek, Derald DeYoung, Loren Johnson, Jeff Klintberg. Last night EPVB was at Good Samaritan Society, and will be in the Rodeo parade July 6. Special events have included Catch The Glow parade, the recent dedication of Estes Park Veterans’ Monument, and legendary EPVB trumpeter Jim Detter-
line’s funeral. Audiences hear the “final” version of a piece, which EPVB has likely worked on for months. What the audience does not see or hear is what happens during rehearsals. Here are snippets overheard at recent rehearsals: “It’s kind of a ragtime cakewalk—watch the dynamic changes…. Pay attention to time signatures. It’s 3/2 then a fast 2 then 3/2 and again fast 2. Be watching for the pickups… . Trumpets, lay out first time…. I’d like a suspended cymbal there…. I have a question about the accidental, four bars before 128. Should that be a C natural?.... Play that last 1/8th note short…. Bassoons—a small ritard; watch for it…. I’m thinking tympani on this one, with a solo at the end…. We’re dragging; I want to hear the third beat…. When you’re doubling the solist, don’t cover him up…. At 94, instead of FFF, let’s make it mp-FF…. At 163 we go into that molto ritard and ¼ note triplets…. Watch the key signature at D….Six before the ¾ time— that’s seven before E…. Let me hear the flutes on the run; eighth bar of D after the 1/16th rest….Six flats in this—everything except F…. We’re in two—start a little faster than moderato.... You did a lot better job of backing off on the dynamics— thanks…. Keep your eyes and pencils handy for the key changes and tempo changes…. Watch the accents, especially on the second beat…. Let’s take it two measures from the end; go back to 100.... When all else fails, look up and follow me.” The New Grove Dictionary of Music Online identifies 2000 community bands across the United States. Pennsylvania’s Allentown Band, founded in 1828, is recognized as the oldest civilian band in continuous existence. Pablo Casals was once asked, “You are eighty years old. Why do you still play the cello four hours every day? ” His answer strikes a chord dear to the hearts of all EPVB musicians: “I think I’m making progress. ” Likewise the Village Band. Prizes To Please Pro And Duffer Alike In Rotary Golf Tourney By: Rita DuChateau, Rotary Club of Estes Park Is it the love of the game or the list of great prizes that’s attracting golfers to this year’s Rotary Club of Estes Park Memorial Tournament for Scholarships? For most who have signed up for the Saturday morning, June 30 event, it’s both. The range of prizes for the 2018 tournament will make Beach Shots (sand traps) or Barkies (hitting a tree) as rewarding as an A Game. Golfers will vie for prizes in contests for putting, most accurate drive, closest to the pin and longest putt. Separate prizes are offered for men and women in the most accurate drive and longest putt competition. Each member of the winning team (net score) will receive a prize, as will the team members with the lowest gross score. Prizes will also be awarded to the four winners of the Closest to the Pin competition on Par 3 holes. All participants will receive a Rotary souvenir. While golfers relax in The Hangar Restaurant in the clubhouse after playing 18 holes, the tournament committee will announce major prizewinners and conduct drawings for merchantdonated prizes. This year’s tournament includes a complimentary Smokin’ Dave’s BBQ lunch buffet for registered golfers. Well Sunshine is still up to her tricks and is a surprise every day. I have a pond and waterfall in my front garden. Keeping the pond clear of algae is a challenge and I must watch it almost every day. I decided that a few water hyacinths and water lettuce would do the trick and compliment the garden. I went down to Gulley’s with a friend and happily purchase some. No one told me that both plants were highly poisonous, especially to animals and small children. Sunshine has never gone into the pond... never. We were both out in the garden, I am pulling up baby aspen and Sunshine was investigating all the flowers and smells. Or so I thought! I turned around and there was Sunshine in the middle of the deep area of the pond retrieving all the water plants! She was having a glorious time and looked like a wet rag. I had her come to me and drop the hyacinth she had in her mouth and cordoned her off on the deck. Luckily, she had not eaten any of the plants, but it was a close call. My beautiful plans for my pond are now in the garbage. Some where in the back of my head I seemed to remember that the plants were poisonous, I don’t know how or why. On Googling I found that I was correct and very lucky that I got them away from Sunshine. I plan on contacting the nursery and asking them to warn others about the hazard to pets. Some of our edibles were thought to be poisonous long ago. Tomatoes are part of the Nightshade group that are poisonous. Thank goodness someone decided to eat a tomato and survived. I think the
look of artichokes is enough to ward one off from eating. But I love them and fix them often. The other night I needed a quick appetizer and one that all my family would eat. Marie, Cecelia and Greg really like artichokes as well as I do. Here is an easy appetizer using one of my favorites vegetables.
Baked Artichokes Serves 4-6 450 degree pre-heated oven 1-24 oz. jar of marinated, quartered artichokes 2 Tbs. olive oil 1⁄2-2/3 cup fresh grated parmesan cheese 1 cup of mayonnaise and 1 garlic clove put through a garlic press or 1⁄4 garlic powder Drain artichokes. On a rimmed cooking tray, lined with foil, toss the chokes with the oil. Place in middle of the heated oven, bake about 18-20 minutes, stirring half way. When artichokes have started to brown and crisp remove and sprinkle the cheese over all. Serve with a sauce make from the mayonnaise and garlic. Went to a lovely shower Friday for my granddaughter, Annette. She will be married in late July. The food, decorations and guest were a delight. Childcare Summer Update From EVICS What’s happening in the ever-challenging world of childcare in Estes Park? I’m glad you asked! Actually, there is quite a lot of action going on behind the scenes. You may wonder, whatever happened with that childcare needs assessment? Remember the survey we urged everyone to complete? Here’s the skinny: data from the survey has been reviewed, analyzed, argued over, and contemplated. Much time has gone into comparing our community needs to other similar mountain communities and researching successful solutions that are working elsewhere. The Economic Development Corporation (EDC) is sharing with the Town their recommendations for a communitywide solution, partially modeled after childcare services in the Town of Breckenridge. On June 15, you are encouraged to come to a community meeting and hear more about this, 4-5:30 p.m. at the Town Hall Board Room. In the meantime, EVICS is working to
recruit new home providers who can help us fill the gap, especially for infant/toddler care. Providing childcare in your home can be a rewarding and financially successful venture, whether longterm or for a shorter interim. Maybe you know someone who loves teaching and caring for young children and needs an income. EVICS can help with navigating the licensing system, or simply helping structure an informal or part-time childcare setting where licensing may not be required. As a community, we must get resourceful and creative in filling the childcare gaps while we are working toward the establishment of a long-term, sustainable, affordable, state-of-the-art solution to early care and education that our children deserve. Bear sightings are more common in the Estes Valley. Is that a good thing? How can people and bears coexist, especially when more people visit and encounter bears in the valley every year? Are problem bears also more common and how do we protect ourselves and our pets? The Estes Valley Land Trust is hosting a breakfast on Saturday, June 16 at 8 a.m. to discuss bears in the Estes Valley. Chase Rylands, District Wildlife Manager with Colorado Parks and Wildlife will be on hand to discuss bear ecology and human and wildlife conflicts. Genealogical Society Meeting June 14 The Estes Park Genealogical Society will meet Thursday, June 14 at 4:00 p.m. in the upstairs Wasson Room of the Estes Valley Library. Professional genealogist Diane Barbour of Broomfield will present “Getting Ready to Cross the Pond.� Diane explains “start with what you know and work back.� Often it is necessary to know what town, city, county or village your ancestors are from. We will discuss the many records on this side of the puddle that may reveal that information and where to find them. Then we will discuss where to find information about your overseas destination and what you should know before you travel. Diane has been doing genealogy for over 15 years. In June 2012, she graduated from the National Institute of Genealogical Studies at the University of
Toronto to complete her Professional Learning Certificate in Genealogical Studies or PLCGS. This certificate represents 50 completed classes in methodology, American records and English records. Diane continues her education by attending several conferences and Institutes every year. She is the past President of Broomfield Genealogical Society and is currently on the education committee for Boulder Genealogical Society. She volunteers at the Denver Public Library and the National Archives, Southwest Branch in Broomfield. The Society meets the second Thursday of every month from January through November in the library, offering a wide variety of programs and workshops. Anyone interested in genealogy and family history research is welcome to attend the meetings.

7 Nations Benefit Concert At The Historic Park Theatre
Seven Nations set to perform Benefit Concert at the Historic Park TheatreSunday June 17th at 8 p.m. The Estes Park Film Festival is proud to sponsor the Historic Park Theatre in downtown Estes Park with a very special live concert of Seven Nations. This is the Historic Park Theatre’s 105th season and they need to get a new roof on the auditorium part of the theatre. This the 3rd time 7 Nations has played at the Historic Park Theatre and are a major sponsor of the theatre. The Historic Park Theatre is the oldest operating single screen motion picture theatre in the United States that was originally built as a motion picture theatre. The cost to redo the Roof and repair damage inside of the auditorium is over $16,000. But with your help, this is a project that can be done. Seven Nations- Celtic band from Florida will be playing at the Historic Park Theatre to help our fund-raising campaign for the new neon lighting. Seven Nations is a Celtic Rock Band and has played the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, a New Year’s Eve performance at Scotland’s Royal Mile for some 40,000 people, and at the New York City Marathon. Seven Nations has also played many times in Estes Park during the Scottish Highland Festival, and just got back from a tour which included Dublin.
Seven Nations will play one night only at the Historic Park Theatre on Sunday June 17th, 2018 at 8 p.m. Join us for amazing Celtic Rock music and fun! Doors will open 30 minutes beforehand and seating is open except for the VIP seats in the front row area. Refreshments including our normal theatre candy, popcorn and beverages along with bottled beer, wine and liquor will be available for purchase for this special event. Healing Waters Foundation Welcomes New Executive Director, Anna Leigh
Welcome to Anna Leigh, new Executive Director for Healing Waters Foundation. Anna volunteered to be the new Executive Director. Becky Sorensen has been the Executive Director since Ann Slack stepped down and after creating a new position of pool manager, Becky will remain in that position. Having a separate person as Executive Director will allow the Board to seek more grant money and have additional fund-raising events. Becky, Anna and the Board are excited to see what the future holds for Healing Waters Foundation. Anna is a native Coloradan, growing
up in Edgewater then earning her BSN at Regis University. Anna and her husband, Tom Leigh spent 20 years raising their family in Palmer, Alaska and they moved to Estes Park three years ago. They love their new small town and amazing “backyard!” Anna says “I was fortunate to find the Healing Waters pool at a time when I needed some rehabilitation. The warmth of the water and the ability to exercise with very low impact made it possible for me to build strength and return to an active outdoor life. I continue to benefit from using the pool both physically and mentally and I don’t plan to stop! My hope is to bring the magic of the Healing Waters pool to as many people as possible and hopefully expand to accommodate even more folks in the future! PERHAPS MORE ‘MEAN’ PARENTS ARE NEEDED Ever since the mass shootings started, especially those involving school children, there has been an endless discussion about what is causing these atrocities and what is the best cure. We’ve all watched crowds saying “Enough is enough!” and urging stronger gun laws and other efforts to get guns out of the hands of people to lessen the frequency of such atrocities and each of us has pondered how effective those solutions will be. We’ve also heard other causes for our situation being set forth. Many note the ‘culture of violence’ we’ve created with our violent video games, movies and television. Others, many viewing it from a religious perspective, stress the removal of God and Christian values from our society. Others note the seeming increase in mental-health problems that are being seen in our society, both in young and old. One problem our society faces certainly contributes to our societal and deadly problem…the lack of discipline and training in many of our homes. Many homes are led by singleparents who can’t keep up with the responsibility of training and guiding each child. However, even in many two-parent families parents are oblivious to things their children are investing their time in…some of which are preparing for ‘mayhem’ that we are all too aware of…after it happens. We saw it at Columbine and in Santa Fe and other such places. Recently such a parent blamed his son’s violent act on the lack of respect, ‘bullying’, he experienced at school. Where was that dad when his son started going to school dressed in a trench coat imprinted with symbols that ‘invited’ a lack of respect from fellow students, resulting in him feeling ‘bullied’. A caring, alert dad would have given his son well-needed advice about appropriate dress and actions if he wanted to be respected. Perhaps, if his father had been a ‘mean parent’ like the ones described below a tragedy would have been averted. A deeply appreciative child described his parents: “We had the meanest parents in the whole world! While other kids ate Fruit Loops and Coco Puffs for breakfast, we had to have porridge, eggs, and toast. When others had Coco-Cola, chips and Mars bars for lunch, we had to eat sandwiches. Not only that, they insisted on knowing where we were at all times. You’d think we were convicts in a prison. They had to know who our friends were, and what we were doing with them. They wouldn’t let friends just honk the horn when they drove up the drive. They had to come to the door so they could meet them. While everyone else was allowed to date when they were 12 or 13, we had to wait until we were 18. We hate to admit it, but they had the nerve to break child ‘labor laws’ by making us work. We had to wash dishes, make our beds, learn to cook, vacuum the floor, do laundry and all sorts of such ‘cruel’ jobs. And, would you believe it? They insisted on us telling the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. By the time we were teenagers, they could read our minds. Life was really tough. Because of our parents, none of us have ever been caught shoplifting, vandalizing other’s property, or ever arrested for any other crime. It was all their fault. We never got drunk, used drugs, stayed out all night, or many other things that other kids did. We had to go to church on Sundays, and were never excused unless we were sick, Now that we have left home, we are all God-fearing, educated, honest adults. We are doing our best to be ‘mean parents’ just like our parents were.” May God help all who are ‘blessed’ to be parents to be such ‘mean’ ones. Bob

Whiskey Book Signing This Sunday
A new book, titled Guidebook to Whiskey and Other Distilled Spirits in Colorado, New Mexico & Wyoming, is being released this week. The Guidebook has direct ties to Estes Park. First, Dr. Joe Elkins, coowner of Elkins Distillery, wrote a chapter in the book titled “Maturing Whiskey in the West.” Elkins Distillery also is one to the Guidebook's 63 featured distilleries. In addition, the book is edited by two Estes Park residents, Doug Sacarto and Howell F. Wright, who also are partners in the book's publishing company, Craft Publishing, LLP. You can find out more about the book, meet and visit with Joe, Doug and Howell this Sunday afternoon, June 10, between 2:00 and 5:00 at Elkins Distillery (1825 N. Lake Avenue, Estes Park. 970480-1848). Signed books will be available, along with Elkin's fine whiskey cocktails. Although "whiskey" is the upfront word in the book title, "Distilled Spirits" figure as importantly in the Guidebook. The editors wanted to be all inclusive, so there is plenty of information about regional vodkas, gins, rums, and agave
spirits (tequila). The Guidebook identifies more than 300 products from 111 distilleries. Most readers, even spirit aficionados, probably do not realize that so many companies are producing such a rich and diverse range of spirits in Colorado, New Mexico and Wyoming. As mentioned, the book features 63 of these companies. Each featured brand has a two-page profile about its business philosophy, production methods and highlighted products, including tasting notes. For cocktail lovers, the profiles also include custom recipes crafted using each company's branded spirits. Just Jazz Quintet At Performance Park
The Fine Arts Guild of the Rockies presents Just Jazz Quintet featuring verve, taste, and mad skills, June 16th at 7 p.m. at Performance Park. Band leader and former music educator, Ron Hollerman, initially formed the group to demonstrate the many different styles of jazz for a jazz history course he was teaching. “I learned to sew on a sewing machine and I made this!� That’s what hundreds of quilt shops across America and Canada hope to hear from kids age 6-14 in their communities this summer. Local quilt shop proprietors like The Stitchin' Den in Estes Park are welcoming kids to their shops, June 21 through October 31, by participating in Row by Row Junior. It’s the kids’ version of the widely popular summertime travel event for quilt making fans known as Row by Row Experience. Kids visit shops in person and collect a free sewing pattern designed just for them to make. They’ll find encouragement and be inspired by the colorful, creative world of sewing
right in their own hometown. “We want to introduce kids to the intrinsic benefits of learning how to sew,� says Janet Lutz, creator of Row by Row Experience. “Making things on today’s modern sewing machines incorporates all the elements of STEM education in an artful way that builds selfesteem and perseverance.� When offered for the first time in 2017, Row by Row Junior was the largest initiative of its kind ever attempted in the sewing industry. Methodist Choir From Lubbock, TX Presents Free Concert Saturday, June 9th
The First United Methodist Chancel Choir of Lubbock, TX will present the first of four concerts on its tour of the front range area at Presbyterian Community Church of the Rockies, Saturday, June 9, at 7 p.m. The forty or so choir members will offer a widely varied one hour program sampling centuries of American Protestant and English choral traditions. From the music of British composer John Rutter to American spirituals, and from timeless European classics to innovative contemporary works, the concert is sure to engage and delight every musical interest. Manning the impressive Schantz-Akers organ at PCCR for accompaniment and solo work, David Warren is the current Guest Artist in a program that has, for thirty years, brought organ and choral scholars to Lubbock from schools in Cambridge, Oxford, Wales, and Norway. These gifted young people serve as or-
ganist and assistant music director at FUMC, while earning advanced degrees at Texas Tech University. The current FUMC choir director is Dr. Seung-Won Cho, a native of South Korea. Dr. Cho came to the U.S. for graduate studies, and has earned a Masters from the University of Texas, and a DMA from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He served as organist and choral director for churches and other groups in Austin, Urbana, and Roanoke, VA before coming to Lubbock. The choir will spend the day Saturday sightseeing Estes and the National Park before their 7 p.m. concert. Sunday will take them to Denver for worship at Trinity United Methodist Church and to perform at The Cathedral Basilica of The Immaculate Conception. The final two concerts are Monday at the Air Force Academy Chapel and at the First United Methodist Church in Colorado Springs. The First United Methodist Chancel Choir of Lubbock invites all in the community to enjoy an evening of inspiring choral music. The concert is at the Presbyterian Community Church of the Rockies, 1700 Brodie Ave, on Saturday, the 9th of June, at 7 p.m. Admission is free.

The Soggy Noodle Children’s Theatre in gleeful conjunction with Estes Park Outreach is excited to announce their upcoming summer production: To Do or Not to Do, Shakespeare Gone Astray! (in 3D). Performances will take place June 14th at 1:30 p.m. and June 15th and 16th at 7:00 p.m. at the Estes Park High School Auditorium. Tickets are $5.00. This is an original and very adolescentminded Shakespearean comedy written by Noodle director, Katherine Dumont. This troupe of mostly 12-14 year olds will enlighten and frighten the audience as they creatively interpret and perform eight of Shakespeare's greatest plays “at one fell swoop! � This production is perfect for both Shakespeare fanatics and Shakespeare-phobics. This collage play of abridged and deranged Shakespearean classics has something for everyone: romance, dueling, conspiracy, murder, fairies, marshmal-
lows, and even a purple porta-potty time machine. The collection includes a few of the bard’s more obscure plays (Timon of Athens and Coriolanus) as well as his most popular (Macbeth, Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet, Twelfth Night, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and King Lear). Queen Elizabeth the First makes an appearance, as do Captain Undergarments and Darth Vader. Help Isabella Putman Travel To National Fishing Competition
Isabella Putman has been fishing all her life. She caught her first fish on her own, a trout, a week after she turned four. She has caught almost every species of fish in Colorado. She has won gift cards, fishing gear and even a guided day trip. At age seven, she won a kids casting contest. They said she was good enough she could’ve competed with the adults. She was then asked if she was interested in joining the Northern Colorado Junior Bass Club. Her parents were worried that competing might ruin fishing for her, but she loved it. She placed very high in her first few years in the club. Her goal was to be selected to represent Colorado in the Junior Nationals. Her fourth year was tough, but she didn’t let it get her down. She started the next season saying “This is the year!” She dominated in all her tournaments and took second place in the Regional Bassmaster Tournament, securing her spot in the Nationals.

Rumford Returns To Rooftop Celebrated rodeo clown joins Sanders, Hilton as award-winners working rodeo Justin Rumford is just naturally funny, and that’s a good thing. He’s a comedian by nature, something he picked up years ago on his family’s Kansas ranch. Now he is the preeminent funnyman in professional rodeo, having been named the Clown of the Year five times in the past six years. Rumford will lend his talents and his comedic poetry to Rooftop Rodeo, set for 7 p.m. Thursday, July 5-Tuesday, July 10, at Granny May Arena inside the Estes Park Fairgrounds. “We’re bringing Justin back because he’s the fans’ favorite every time he’s here,” said Mark Purdy, chairman of Estes Park Western Heritage Inc., a group of volunteers that works with the town of Estes Park to produce the annual rodeo. “He’s funny, engaging and makes our rodeo better just because he’s here.” Deep in his roots, Rumford is a thirdgeneration stock contractor. Rodeo is in his blood. He’s roped and bulldogged; he’s ridden broncs and fought bulls; he’s even driven the semi-tractor trailers that haul prized steads. Now he’s living a dream. “This clowning deal is the best thing I’ve ever had,” said Rumford, who lives Ponca City, Okla., with his wife, Ashley, and their triplets, Livi, Lola and Bandy. “It’s something in rodeo that I can have a lot of longevity in. There’s not just a ton of risk, and it’s something I enjoy so much.”
He isn’t the only award-winning piece of the Rooftop Rodeo equation. Of course, the rodeo is a winner, named six times as Rodeo of the Year, and this year will also feature two other 2017 honorees: Secretary of the Year Amanda Corley Sanders and Music Director of the Year Josh “Hambone” Hilton – Hilton is the first person to ever be recognized in that category. “We’ve had Amanda and ‘Hambone’ working Rooftop for several years, and both are integral parts of what we do in producing this rodeo every year,” said Ben Vigil, president of Western Heritage. “They handle a lot of the behind-thescenes things that must happen for a rodeo to be successful in this day and age, but they are relatively unseen. Still, none of our success happens without people like that on your team.” Like Rumford, Sanders and Hilton were raised around rodeo. Each provides a laundry list of experiences to their duties, and the cowboys have rewarded them for it. While they tend to handle their tasks under the cover of darkness, Rumford happily welcomes his place in the spotlight. “People want to laugh at each other more than they want to laugh at something,” Rumford said. “When I’m in the arena, I’m saying the same stuff I’d say if I wasn’t clowning. “It’s just me being me.” That’s all anybody in Estes Park wants.

“Our Wonderful World” continues its 12th season of armchair travel-adventures this Monday, June 11 with “Capes of the World,” a presentation by world-traveler and mountaineer Pietro Simonetti. Pietro Simonetti will share photos and stories that take attendees on a journey into and beyond the rocky cliffs, light-
houses, untamed wildlife, jagged mountains and intriguing history of three remarkable capes: the Cape of Good Hope (South Africa), Cape Farewell (Greenland), and Cape Horn (Patagonia). He will share his experiences exploring these regions, as well as time spent meeting and learning from the few people that still live in these remote parts of the world. Simonetti has traveled extensively around the globe, including several worldclass skiing expeditions. He was part of the team that set a world record by skiing all of Colorado’s 28 major ski resorts in a whirlwind 80 hours and 41 minutes. He has taken part in expeditions to Kilimanjaro, Mount Elbrus, Aconcagua, and in uncharted territories in northern Alaska. Travis Brown On May 31st, 2018 Travis Levi Brown A.K.A. T-Bone Scarpone, departed this life. Travis was 33 years young, born in the year of ’84, in the month of September, on the 12th day in Estes Park, Colorado to Mitch & Sherri Brown. Travis lived his youth in Estes Park graduating from high school there. He then moved on to Front Range Community College in Westminster CO before transferring to Colorado State University in Fort Collins CO where he earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communication Studies. Travis was a lover of people first, and music a close second. He spent the majority of his time being D.J. for numerous weddings, dances, sporting events, and night clubs. T-Bone was also the D.J. for his friend Josh Madry (Black Prez). Travis honed his skills, perfected his craft, and went on to perform his own original songs at several venues across the country. Releasing two CDs along the way, T-Bone was determined to bring forth social consciousness for equality and humanitarianism. Travis had a heart of gold, will be missed beyond measure, and never forgotten.
Travis is survived by his daughter Koha (not by blood but by heart), parents Mitch & Sherri Brown of Fort Collins, CO, sister Briana Ricketts and husband Josh Ricketts and their two sons Cole and Mase of Windsor, CO, brother Dalton Brown and his wife Tracey and their daughter Dakota and son Maximus, and his Grandma Bernadette Alexander all of Fort Collins, CO. Janet Kay Calkin was born October 3, 1942 on a kitchen table just outside Clearfield, Iowa. She was raised on a farm four miles south of Randall Maharry, the man she would eventually marry. They shared life for 56 years. She took classes at the University of Iowa and then began to support Randall as he proceeded through his medical education. She was his rock and he was her guy. In 1975, they moved to Des Moines. She was the bookkeeper for Randall’s dermatology office. Tennis was her sport and she excelled at it. Church was her second home. Her giving spirit is exemplified in the life of a young sixteen year old girl who now lives in Florida. Thirty-one years ago, Janet gave to her the gift of life, her bone marrow. That spirit was also demonstrated by the not for profit Village Thrift Shop in Estes Park Colorado which she helped found two years ago. In two years, The shop has donated over one quarter million dollars to her
community, Estes Park! Janet’s love of travel took her to 103 countries! Twice climbing Long’s Peak in her beloved Rocky Mountains was also one of the sources of her pride. She would say that her greatest accomplishment was being “Granny” to Benjamin DeNardo, Haille Petroff (Jarred), Maxwell Maharry, Calla Lloyd, Lance Maharry, Foster Lloyd, Brevin Buster and Sabrina Maharry. She is also survived by her husband, Randall; sister, Ramona Duey (Harvey Howard) ; sons, Christopher (Laura) and Michael (Shelly) ; and daughter, Sarah (Marshall Hannum) ; niece, Linda; and nephew, Craig. Janet was proceeded in death by her father, James “Henry” Calkin and her mother, Eunice Frame Calkin; as well as an infant brother. Visitation will be held on Friday, June 8 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon St. in Des Moines and a service at Windsor United Methodist Church at 10:30 a.m. on June 9.
