New Electric Vehicle Charging Stations Available At Visitor Center Parking Structure Available free to the public Estes Park Light and Power is proud to announce the completion of two new electric vehicle charging stations. The charging stations are located on the east side of the new parking structure at 691 N Saint Vrain Ave/U.S. 36. The charging units have dual ports, allowing four electric vehicles to charge at once. At this time the chargers are free to use, there is a three-hour limit on parking in these spaces. Grant funding for this project was pursued by the Town’s Public Works Department and received from This project is part of the Town’s continuing efforts to pursue grants for public projects that encourage environmental sustainability. Welcoming Our Three New Trustees In April, the community elected three new Trustees to the Town Board. Being an elected official is a tough but very rewarding job. In local government, elected officials wear many hats and their duties are diverse and varied.

Throughout my career I have worked for over 30 elected officials and each and every one has had the best interest of the community they represented in mind. Jim Disney, one of our past County Commissioners whom I had the pleasure to work with, once described coming on board as “trying to take a sip of water from a fire hose.�

There is so much to learn about the job and getting up to speed on all the issues can be very daunting. There is no warmup period to this job. From day one, our elected officials must make decisions and take actions that are within the legal confines of their responsibility and are best for the community. It can be a little overwhelming at first.

Staff ’s goal is to get the new Trustees up to speed on their responsibilities as quickly as possible. We start by having the new Trustees sit down with each Town department for a briefing of the department’s responsibilities, current and long-term issues facing the department and how the department is funded. Each of these briefings is about an hour in length and there are seven Town departments.

The Town Board then has three study sessions devoted to Trustee orientation.

These sessions are attended by the full board, not just the new Trustees. No one knows the job of a Town Trustee better than those who have been serving. By having the full Board partake in the orientation sessions, the seasoned Trustees can share their invaluable experience with the new members of the Board. This is also serves as a great review for veteran Trustees.

In the first meeting we covered items such as the structure of Town government, Policy Governance, the Board’s Code of Conduct, and legal issues such as open meetings, open records,

Amendment 41 restrictions and exparte communication. We also covered how the Board conducts its meetings and how agendas are set. In the second session, we covered the Town strategic plan and how the Board does strategic planning, the roles and relationships with other governmental entities, budgeting and financial responsibilities and the land use responsibilities of the Board. Finally, at the third study session the Board learned about the liability and risk they have, both personally and for the Town, when acting in their capacity as a Trustee.

In addition to in-house training, the Colorado Municipal League offers new elected official training in the “Essentials for Elected Officials,� which we make available to all trustees.

As the Town Administrator, I sit down with each new trustee individually to discuss their goals, what they would like to accomplish and what myself and staff can do to help them be successful.

We also talk over how they prefer to communicate with staff and the roles of staff and elected officials. Then there is all the mundane stuff too, such as getting their IDs, how they get their mail and signing them up for their Town email accounts.

I think even veteran Trustees would tell you they are still learning about the job, but by having a structured new Trustee “boot camp� in place, we strive to get your new representatives up to full speed as soon as possible so they can be effective in their new endeavor.

I have the greatest respect for anyone who puts themselves out there to be an elected official and serve their community. I’m looking forward to working with Trustees Bangs, Cenac and Zornes. I also want to thank Trustees Holcomb, Nelson and Mayor Pro-Tem Koenig for their dedication and service to the community. It has been a privilege to work for these three individuals who contributed so much to the community and helped to shape the future of Estes Park for years to come.

US 34 Canyon Reopens For Good On Thursday, May 24 On-going work to continue with minimal traffic impact US 34 has undergone major reconstruction since July 2016 to make the highway more resilient to future floods.

On Thursday, May 24, at 4 p.m. when US 34 through the Big Thompson Canyon between Loveland and Estes Park reopens to all traffic, it will mark the end of all long-term closures.

The Colorado Department of Transportation and Kiewit Infrastructure Co. have worked since October to reopen the canyon and shave 18 months off the construction schedule.

“A tremendous amount of work has been put in to make this opening before Memorial Day happen. This project has affected so many people in different ways, especially the residents of the Big Thompson Canyon. To all who have been impacted by this project, no matter how big or small, thank you for your patience and for working with the Project Team! ” said James Usher, CDOT project director.

“As the highway opens this coming week, my hope is that everyone can let out a big sigh of relief knowing that not only the highway/river system is now much stronger but that the canyon community and the communities the canyon connects are stronger as well, ” Usher added.

Since closing the canyon in early October, Kiewit has installed 95,000 cubic yards of rock to help armor the roadway from flooding erosion. 20,000 linear feet of river improvements have been installed, as well as 4,000 linear feet of new drainage pipe. Crews also completed the Horseshoe Bridge structures (near mile point 78) east of Drake where the roadway is being realigned to cut through the

mountain further away from the river.

Ultimately, this project will minimize the impacts of a future flood by maximizing protected emergency routes to allow for canyon travelers and residents to get out and for emergency responders to get in.

Although the heavy lifting is complete, the final touches still need to be completed throughout the corridor.

Construction activities will continue in the canyon this summer and throughout the fall. Drivers could encounter up to 20-minute delays this summer for paving operations. During the summer, there will be limited, nighttime closures of the road to allow bridge girders to be set for four new access bridges.

Project Background: US 34 Big Thompson Canyon’s roads and bridges were heavily damaged during the 2013 floods with many homes damaged and over 100 air lifted evacuations. The canyon and its residents also suffered from flooding in 1976. As a result of these two events, CDOT studied the hydraulic flow of the river in the canyon and its impact on the road and bridges along its path while looking for safety improvements and resiliency solutions to prevent/protect against future flood events.

Critical New Flood Risk Information To Be Shared May 30 At Community Center Maps will ultimately be adopted by FEMA and affect insurance requirements/rates The Town of Estes Park, Larimer County and the Colorado Water Conservation Board invite Estes Valley residents and property owners to attend an open house to learn about new flood risk information provided by the Colorado Hazard Mapping Program (CHAMP) for the Big Thompson River in the Estes Valley, Fall River, Fish Creek, Black Canyon Creek, Dry Gulch, North Fork Big Thompson, Fox Creek, West Creek and tributaries to the Big Thompson River within the Big Thompson Canyon.

The meeting takes place Wednesday, May 30 from 5 to 7 p.m. in the lower level Community Room at the Estes Valley Community Center, 660 Community Dr. A presentation will begin at 5:15 p.m. and breakout sessions will follow for each of the five drainage basins, as well as the North Fork of the Big Thompson River (Glen Haven area).

The Colorado Water Conservation Board is the lead agency coordinating the CHAMP Floodplain Mapping Project and will be presenting mapping information. The CHAMP Project provides new or updated flood hazard maps for streams most affected by the 2013 Flood. The draft maps show significant changes in flood risk, particularly for the

Fall River corridor and downtown Estes Park. The goal of the project is to equip communities with up-to-date flood risk information to help make more informed floodplain management decisions resulting in safer, more resilient communities. In the future (approximately two years), the results of the study will be submitted to FEMA as part of an effort to update the FEMA Flood Insurance Rate Maps. A State representative from the National Flood Insurance Program will attend the May 30 meeting to provide information.

Officials Seek Community Assistance In Bear Poaching Investigation Colorado Parks and Wildlife and Estes Park Police continue to investigate the poaching of two black bears in the area of Aspen Avenue, Ponderosa Drive and Morgan Street in Estes Park. One bear was found dead Aug. 23 and the other was found Aug. 24, 2017.

Town Seeks Public Feedback On Proposed Stormwater Management Project Learn about stormwater runoff challenges, possible solutions and proposed stormwater utility fees The Town of Estes Park invites Estes Valley residents and property owners to attend one of three public meetings to learn about a proposed Stormwater Management Project. Each meeting will provide information on the draft Stormwater Master Plan and a proposed Stormwater Utility. The information is pertinent to both Town residents and residents of unincorporated Larimer County within the Estes Valley Development Code area.

Thursday, June 7 from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Town Board Room of Town Hall, 170 MacGregor Ave. Friday, June 8 from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the Community Room of the Estes Valley Community Center, 660 Community Dr. Sunday, June 10 from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Estes Park Museum, 220 4th St. These public outreach meetings on the Stormwater Management Project follow the introduction of the new preliminary floodplain maps provided by the Colorado Hazard Mapping Program (CHAMP) at the public meeting with the Colorado Water Conservation Board

Free Household Hazardous Waste Collection Takes Place June 9 The household hazardous waste dropoff returns and will take place Saturday, June 9, from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Town of Estes Park Water Division shop, 577 Elm Rd. Unwanted household paints, stains, cleaners, yard and garden chemicals, used oil, adhesives, solvents, gasoline, batteries and other household chemicals may be brought to the collection site for proper disposal. This service is provided free of charge by the Town of Estes Park Water Division, Larimer County Solid Waste, Upper Thompson Sanitation District and Estes Park Sanitation for the benefit of the community and the environment.

The last hazardous waste cleanup took place in 2017 after a seven-year hiatus due to budgetary constraints. Almost

200 vehicles came to the collection last year, protecting the environment and watershed from dangerous contaminants by properly disposing of them.

Items that cannot be accepted include commercial waste, fluorescent lightbulbs, fire extinguishers materials containing asbestos, explosives, radioactive waste including smoke detectors, propane containers and containers larger than five gallons. Estes Park Police And FBI Investigate International Kidnapping Case

Estes Park Police Department and the FBI recently investigated an international kidnapping case and wanted to ensure the residents of Estes Park are aware in the event you are experiencing any type of similar extortion.

In early April 2018, three residents from Estes Park, Colorado were traveling in Mexico and were involved in a Mexico cartel extortion/kidnapping scam. The three residents are U.S. citizens who have spent time living between Madera, Chihuahua, and Estes Park, Colorado over the past five years. During their most recent trip from Mexico to Colorado, they were contacted by a Mexican cartel member who told them he was watching them and instructed them to stay in their hotel room, with the threat of death if they were to come out. It is believed the caller was able to use real time information about the three persons in order to instill an intense amount of fear in them. At the same time, the cartel member began extorting money from family members back in Estes Park, Colorado in order to release the family from their hotel in Mexico.

The Estes Park Police Department and FBI Denver Division assisted family members in negotiating with the cartel member until a time when law enforcement in Mexico could locate and safely recover the three persons in the hotel room. Additional investigation revealed the cartel member was more than 500 miles away when he contacted the three persons in their hotel room. He was able to convince

them they were being kidnapped from a distance by conveying intimate details about the family during his initial threatening call. He employed advanced technological tactics to access their phones and spoof their information. He also engaged their phones to prevent any family members from talking to them. The cartel member followed a series of planned steps to keep the scheme going for multiple days. His threats convinced the three persons they were in physical danger even though the cartel member was a significant distance away.

Cartel kidnappings similar to the one experienced by the three residents from Estes Park, Colorado are presently trending in Mexico and are often referred to as “digital kidnappings.” During these digital kidnappings, threats are made against the victims and money is immediately requested from family members in the United States and/or other locations in Mexico.

It is important to note that the cartel members, in most instances, will instruct the victims and their family members to avoid contacting law enforcement. The Estes Park Police Department and the FBI strongly advise that if you or someone you know are experiencing a similar extortion scheme, please contact local law enforcement or the local FBI division in which you reside immediately. “Digital Kidnapping” Extortion Calls On The Rise In Colorado The FBI Denver division would like to make residents of Colorado aware of a recent increase in “digital kidnapping” schemes. Please see below techniques used by alleged digital kidnappers and tips to avoid this type of scam.

The success of “digital kidnapping” schemes usually hinge on haste and fear.

Criminals know they most likely have a short timeframe to extort victims before the scam unravels or authorities become involved. To avoid becoming a victim, look for the following possible indicators:  Callers try to keep you on the phone, insisting you remain on the call.  Calls do not originate from the alleged victim’s phone.  Multiple successive phone calls.  Callers attempt to prevent you from contacting the “kidnapped” victim.  Calls include demands for money only be paid via wire transfer or other means, oftentimes to foreign countries.  Ransom amount demands may drop rapidly.

If you receive a phone call from someone demanding a ransom for an alleged kidnap victim, consider the following:  In most cases, the best course of action is to simply hang up.  If you engage the caller, don’t call out the alleged victim’s name.  Slow the pace of the situation. Request

to speak to the alleged victim directly. Ask, “How do I know he/she is okay? ”  Ask questions only the alleged kidnap victim would know, such as the name of a pet, etc... Avoid sharing information about yourself or your family.  Listen carefully to the voice of the alleged victim if they speak.  Attempt to contact the alleged victim via phone, text, or social media, and request that they call back from their cell phone.  To buy time, repeat the caller’s request and tell them you are writing down the demand, or tell the caller you need time to get things moving.  Don’t agree to pay a ransom, by wire or in person. Delivering money in person can be dangerous or worse, life-threatening.

FBI Denver is committed to working with our state and local law enforcement agencies to increase public awareness regarding the threat posed by “digital kidnappings”, and will continue to investigate and refer these types of cases for prosecution.

On May 19 at 2:17 a.m. police stopped a driver in the 300 block of E. Elkhorn for multiple traffic violations. With an area of responsibility from "Alaska to Nebraska," musical variety from ancient renaissance to modern jazz, and technical virtuosity from the trumpets all the way down to the tuba. The candidates will spend time with a small group of citizens, answering their questions and then will move to another group of citizens until all citizens have the opportunity to spend time with each of the candidates.

Then I got more: •“We are sitting on our deck looking out toward Twin Sisters and I can only say ‘amen! ’ to your most recent column. I have absolutely no idea what these people are thinking.” ~WB • “Your recent column brought tears to my eyes. The nature we love is disappearing and ultimately so may we. Maybe Mother Nature will shed its errant, arrogant children and then restore itself. ” ~BW • “My family has been attending Cheley Camp from its beginnings at Bear Lake. My father, all my siblings, and many of our grandchildren have attended. Thank you for so eloquently sharing the outrage that I feel about this clear cut disguised as forest restoration. Another great PR effort in the finest traditions of Orwell. Cheley should be ashamed and at some point I hope they will be ashamed. What on earth were they thinking? I just can't get my mind around this” ~TS • “Thank-you so much for writing about the devastation around the Rouse trail; so many of us are so saddened by that activity.

I'm so glad you voiced what we've been thinking (and mourning!). I have really missed the trail while it is closed and, unfortunately, if and when it reopens I think I'll miss it more! Is there a timeline for reopening? ~JB [The sign I saw stapled to the barricade said the work would be finished May 31 but an April press release said August. ] There are those who made predictions about the use of this now-bare land: • “I was shocked when I first saw the devastating scar from the road. I doubt if I ever walk on that trail again. I have heard some people say that the land was cleared for more homes to be built there.” ~SS [I have heard no such thing but it is unlikely.

There would have been all sorts of Town meetings and public protest if this were the case. But if it were true, as much as we don’t like it, it is private land and the owner has a right to build. Do you know if this is true? I went to their site and it looks like it’s in that area—their new ropes course. Will they not quit until they reach the Twin Sisters summit and then decide to go across Hwy 36 and cut down the Lions Gulch Trail? ” ~CT [That’s stretching things, but we tend to fear the worst when we don’t trust the information we’ve been given—or not been given. ] CT continued: “This clear cutting has

eliminated this forest for the next 50 years.

A forest is more than trees. Succession takes time. Soil structure, understory flora and fauna, canopy structure takes time. I won't hardly mention the invasives that will move in and the problems with erosion and soil loss.”

•BA chose to keep a positive outlook: “My work with the trees has taught me some things. Your work isn’t for now (maybe your lifetime), but for the future. If people are going to live in or near trees, then it’d be best to try to manage the forest. Looking at the big/long-term picture takes some work and is frustrating to say the least. I want to see the project end and see the results…

“The land can be very resilient. I saw this first hand in Yellowstone. Amazed me how fast (a few years) the new growth came back after the 1989 fires. It’s just a different part of the lifecycle to witness.”

•Another KJ suggested a solution to deforestation: “If RMNP was wise, they would allow visitors to plant (approved only) trees and flora along their favorite paths to replenish that which is being lost. Children could visit trees and flowers planted by their parents, and so on. Second, we need a modern day Johnny (or Jillian) Appleseed to wander about and plant seedlings of all sorts. Such a program would create a whole new generation of caring activist conservationists concurrent with giving the best gift to future generations—plentiful trees and flowers.” [Brilliant! Anybody listening? ] •And then GS brought a wider scope of awareness to tree destruction: “Recently the new Starbucks building project resulted in the removal of a beautiful small ponderosa who had been outside Key Bank in a little island where she brought a happy feeling to the asphalt environment. I dashed into the bank the day workers were digging around that little pine tree. I figured they were only taking rocks out from around it.

The next time I was at the bank, the tree was gone without a trace. Now there are three more spaces for cars.

“Someone who lives in town told me that she came home one day to find that the three mature ponderosas outside the condo she rents had completely disappeared. Apparently the owner claimed that too many pine needles fell into the gutters. Where are our priorities and what kind of sterile, unhealthy world are we creating? ” [Gianna Settin’s book, Spirit of Trees, is available at Macdonald Book Shop.]

•And last but not least, HPH recommended another tree book: “Let me suggest that you sign up on the library’s waiting list for The Overstory by Richard Powers – or just buy it at Macdonald Book Shop. It will help heal your wounds and make you appreciate forest ecology even more.”

We need each other, we humans and our trees, so let’s work together to heal all wounds. The trees are doing their part.

EVRPD To Extend Senior Lunch Program Pilot

On Thursday, March 8, EVRPD launched the pilot of its Senior Lunch Program. To date, 708 seniors have been served with an average of 65 seniors attending each lunch. Meals are catered by Jubilations Catering and include a salad, hot main dish, and dessert. Thanks to a generous grant from SupplyWorks, patrons have been paying only $5 per lunch (the actual cost of the meal is $15).

Due to the overwhelmingly positive response, EVRPD will extend the pilot program through June with a few modifications. The extension will allow EVRPD and its Senior Advisory Committee additional time to identify ways to make the lunch financially sustainable. The current lunch model requires a weekly subsidy of approximately $700.

The planned modifications will reduce the subsidy to $400 per week.

Beginning on June 6, the following changes to the program will take place: Lunches will be moved to Wednesdays at 12:00 noon.

The fee will increase to $7 per person.

Pre-payment is required at the time of sign up.

There will be a 50-person limit for each lunch.

Lunch will reservations will open the Friday prior to each Wednesday Lunch The subsidy for June has been funded by an anonymous donor. If you are interested in contributing to the Senior Lunch Program, EVRPD has launched the Estes Valley Recreation and Park Foundation, a 501c3 entity that can receive donations in any amount. Health & Wellness Free Caregiver Program from the

Alzheimer’s Association EVRPD is pleased to collaborate with the Alzheimer’s Association of Colorado to offer a special free program.

Designed for anyone caring for a person with Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia, this program will teach caregivers effective communication skills. Participants will learn to decode verbal and behavioral communication and leave with strategies to meaningfully connect with people in early, middle and late-stage dementia. The program will be presented by Katie Fahrenbruch, M.Ed., Regional Director of the Alzheimer’s Association of Colorado.

One-on-One Medicare Counseling EVRPD is pleased to collaborate with UCHealth Aspen Club to offer free Medicare counseling. All counseling sessions are conducted by trained State Health Insurance Program Counselors from the UCHealth Aspen Club.

Counseling sessions will be held at the new Estes Valley Community Center, 660 Community Drive. The individual 45minute appointments are offered between 9:15 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. on the fourth Wednesday of each month, January through October. Registration is now open for Wednesday, May 23. These free sessions are useful for those new to Medicare, those with questions or problems with coverage, or anyone needing good information on Medicare services and plans.

Public Invited To ALICE Violent Intruder Training At YMCA Of The Rockies YMCA of the Rockies and the Estes Park Police Department invite residents of the Estes Park area to attend an ALICE Violent Intruder Training. These presentations are being offered for new YMCA summer seasonal staff, but the general public is also welcome to attend.

The two-hour training presentations will be taught

by ALICE certified trainers from the Estes Park Police Department and YMCA of the Rockies staff. Each presentation will include three scenarios and emphasize the need for a pro-active response to a violent intruder, active killer event. There is no cost to attend the training.

ALICE Violent Intruder Training is an internationally acclaimed curriculum that has been presented to over 2,500 Estes Park area residents in the last three years. It has been adopted by the following organizations: Estes Park School District, Town of Estes Park, Estes Park Medical Center, Rocky Mountain National Park, Estes Park Library, YMCA of the Rockies, Harmony

Memorial Day 2018 ...And A Little History In the early 1980s a group of long time Estes Park residents gathered with hopes and dreams of an established community cemetery. At this time there were a few private/family burial plots around but many families took loved ones to “the Valley” or maybe “back home” for their final resting place. As time passed, Estes Park became a permanent home to many and they wished to be buried here and/or have their deceased loved ones near as well. The story goes “…the Old Timers believed Estes Park was for the living and not the dead,” thus the reason there was not an established cemetery earlier on.

The group’s dreams were fulfilled when the non-profit Estes Valley Memorial Gardens was established. After conquering many hurdles and much searching for the perfect spot, the EVMG board signed a contract with the Town of Estes Park to purchase six acres – one acre per year – on Fish Hatchery Road off of Hwy. 34 West… and the rest of the story is becoming history.

The first Memorial Day Observance

held at the Estes Valley Memorial Gardens was on Monday, May 30, 1984. At eleven o’clock that chilly, snowy morning one older gentleman and his grand daughter were in attendance. Each year this observance increases in attendance and has become a tradition, honoring loved ones and those who served our country.

We invite the community and visitors to join us at 11:00 o’clock in the morning of Monday, May 28th for the 34th annual Memorial Day Observance at Estes Valley Memorial Gardens. Directions to the cemetery: from the intersection of Hwy. 34 bypass and Elkhorn Ave., west 1.7 mile to the intersection of Fish Hatchery Road (signage for the cemetery); turn west and cemetery is just past the Harmony campus, on the left.

In case of inclement weather, the observance will be held at the Methodist Church, also located on Fish Hatchery Road.

Memorial Day At The Estes Park Veterans Monument

The Memorial Day commemoration at the Estes Park Veterans Monument will begin at 2 p.m. Monday, May 28th. All branches of the military will be represented at the ceremony, as well as veterans who served in World War II, the Korean War, the Cold War era, Vietnam, Desert Shield, Desert Storm, Afghanistan, Iraq, Somalia, Syria, and other military interventions.

During the program the monument’s donor and dedication plaques will be unveiled and dedicated. In addition, USMC Sergeant John Reid will be presented with a quilt created by a local quilter. Reid is a Purple Heart recipient and is one of the University of Northern Colorado student veterans who hiked from Greeley to Estes Park last month.

A highlight of the afternoon will be a flag-folding ceremony performed by three active duty sailors from the Navy Information Operations Command (NIOC) located at Buckley Air Force Base. Commander Kendra Ryan of the Naval Reserve will narrate the meaning of each fold. In addition to her duties with the Naval Reserve, Ryan is a businesswoman in Estes Park. This ceremony is particularly meaningful on Memorial Day because the folding of the flag normally concludes most military funerals.

Everyone is invited to attend the commemoration, especially families and their children. Seating will not be provided, so people are encouraged to bring their own chairs. The Veterans Monument is located in Veterans Park which is adjacent to the Visitor Center on Big Thompson Avenue.

Jake Miller Awarded Bank Of Estes Park Student Legacy Award

Estes Park High School and Bank of Estes Park have awarded local EPHS student, Jake Miller, with the 2018 Bank of Estes Park Student Legacy Award. Jake has selected the EPHS Golf Program to receive the $500 award, splitting the amount evenly between the boy’s and the girl’s programs.

According to principal, Chuck Scott, “We are so proud of all 38 winners of the Bank of Estes Park Student of the Week Program during this school year—we love the recognition of the good things that so many of our students are accomplishing.” This is the third year of the Bank o Estes Park Student of the Week Program, where an outstanding student is recognized each week during the school year. But it is the first year for the Bank of Estes Park Student Legacy Award, where one of the winners of the Student of the Week, from the whole school year, is selected as the winner, and is given $500 to be able to donate back to any EPHS program, of his or her choosing.

When asked how the Student Legacy Award grew from the Student of the

Week Program, Tim Hull (CEO of Bank of Estes Park) responded, “We are really the only local bank in town, and we simply have such a heart for this community. We were sitting in a management meeting, talking about ways we could give back, and the idea came up, wondering if there would be a way to help our local students give back to their school in a positive way, however they wanted. This idea was brought forward, refined, coordinated with the school and with the EP News, without either of whom the program would not really be possible, and here we are! We are incredibly proud of all the winners of the Student of the Week Award. And today, we are especially proud of Jake Miller, and of his selection of the EPHS Golf Program to receive the $500.”

A plaque will hang in EPHS, memorializing Jake Miller as the 2018 winner of the Bank of Estes Park Student Legacy Award. Congratulations to Jake, to all prior winners of the Bank of Estes Park Student of the Week Award, and to all the outstanding, local students in the graduating class of 2018!

Have you ever noticed that there seem to be trends in styles of cooking and the meat or vegetable “of the year?” The rage was kale last year. You could not open a cooking magazine or website that didn’t have a recipe for kale. The style of cooking was Mexican for so long that I wondered if anyone ever cooked meat loaf anymore. Now we have all kinds of recipes for cauliflower. In my home, cauliflower was the stand by for the traditional Thanksgiving meal, baked cauliflower with cheese sauce.

Now it is suggested to use it as a “steak,” grill it, bread and fry it, substitute it for potatoes or rice, eat it raw in a salad, mix with potatoes for creamed potatoes, etc.

I really cannot begin to name all the suggested uses for this lovely “flower.” They all sound good. I guess kale is out and cauliflower reigns as “queen.” It is too beautiful to be called “king.” And isn’t it nice that with modern day shipping and farming we can buy it all year round instead of it being only seasonally obtainable. I hope you enjoy the following:

1⁄2 pound bacon (cooked) 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese 1 cup mayonnaise 1 cup sour cream 1⁄2 cup sugar 1⁄2 teaspoon salt 1 small head iceberg lettuce, shredded Toss the first six ingredients in a large serving bowl. In smaller bowl make the dressing with the next four ingredients, stirring until all ingredients are completely incorporated. Now pour dressing over vegetable. Serve separately on salad plated with beds of lettuce.

This can be served as a salad or a main course if you add chicken. Great for taking to a pot luck as without the lettuce it holds up well.

Isn’t this weather strange. I am waiting to hear bagpipes from across the lake as it is more like Scottish Festival time than spring.

Sunshine and I were taking our walk on the lake path, one minute it was sunny and the next we were getting soaked by a sudden rain shower. We walked so fast back to the car that we were both “huffing and puffing.” We were not the only ones though, everyone was making a “bee-line” for shelter.

This June-Have A “Fiber Affair�

In just a couple of weeks, June will be here and so will the Estes Park Fiber Affair and the Wool Market! It will be a great time to indulge in all your fiber fantasies. We want you to have an opportunity to participate in all the wonderful fiber activities, so here is an overview of what is available.

Fiber Affair will begin on June 1 with exhibits of our local fiber artists and CSU students sharing their fiber creations at several locations throughout Estes. The sites will be open based on the hours of the establishments. Visit our local artists at the Weaver’s Attic and the Weaver’s Closet (new store) in the Old Church Shops, the library-first and second floors, US Bank, Snowy Peak Winery, the Estes Park Medical Center (upstairs) and at the Event Center Lobby during Wool Market. Fiber Flyers with a map will be available at the Visitor’s Center and throughout town.

Yarn Bombing will come alive in Estes June 6 –June 13! Our thanks to the many dedicated knitters of Estes Park who have provided the knitted wraps hugging the trees! June 5 Meeting For Democrats In The Estes Valley

The Estes Valley branch of the Larimer County Democrats will meet on Tuesday, June 5, from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. in the Hondius Room of the Estes Valley Library.

The agenda includes discussion of the upcoming June 26 Primary Election plus voter outreach efforts and events leading up to the General Election in November.

We will have handouts and discussions about the new Colorado rules for Unaffiliated voting in the Primary, as well as general voter information.

Voting in 2018 elections, both Primary

and General, will be by mail-in ballot.

Due to the passage of the 2016 ballot issues regarding Unaffiliated participation in Colorado Primary Elections, it becomes more important than ever for voters to support the candidates of their choice in the Primary and to vote for all positions on their ballot.

Ballots will be mailed the week of June 4 through 8, and must be received by the County Clerk via mail or drop box no later than 7 p.m. on June 26. (Postmarks are not a “received� date.)

Precinct Committee Persons, County and State delegates, plus volunteers should plan to attend, as well as other Democrats and Unaffiliated voters interested in working with the Democrats in the 2018 elections.

Foster Care Month To The Editor: May is foster care month. I want to thank DHS, foster/kinship families, policemen, child advocates, lawyers, and counselors who stretch to their limit to ensure the health and safety of children.

As drug/alcohol, physical, and mental abuse continues to rise, children are left to scrape for food, hide from the next abuse, and taught to lie or steal so no one will find out. They learn self-preservation instead of how to laugh and play.

We can help make a change in broken children. The state of Colorado is looking for 1,200 more foster families. Not everyone is suited to this role, but everyone can walk with the families/social workers who are. Start by praying for them. Show you care, through respect and encouragement.

Foster families form because they love

kids. It is not easy. If you know a foster family, help by providing a blessing of a gift of laundry detergent, food, or clothing. Send cards of support. Ask them how their doing. Contribute funds, to supplement the state counseling with specialized therapy the children need.

Offer to babysit for a night. Commit to spending time weekly with a child, show them they are loved, not forgotten.

Foster parents need mental and physical breaks, so they may focus on teaching, loving, and supporting traumatized children. You can provide breaks by becoming a respite provider on weekends.

Chi Kung Classes At Community Center

Chi Kung is known as the "Mother of Chinese Medicine," and is the grandparent of Tai Chi and is over 5,000 years old. Chi Kung is done from a "centered" state - a deep place of connection and presence with self and one's world through mind intent, conscious breathing, and body awareness.

Chi Kung forms can involve either movement (eyes open and feet moving),

or stillness (eyes gently closed, seated or standing). Both external and internal forms combine breath, posture, and intent of mind and can include visualizations, self-massage, and sound to enhance healing, and aid in the prevention of common illnesses. Chi Kung creates a relaxed emotional and mental state with body full of life force energy.

We Need Your Help To Paint Estes Pink

The Rooftop Rodeo and the Estes Park Medical Center Foundation are working together to Paint Estes Pink once again this summer. This 5th annual campaign is designed to raise funds in our community to improve the experience for local patients battling any form of cancer.

This year the focus is to underwrite the costs to develop a Wound Care Clinic at EPMC. Many oncological patients receiving chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy will develop wounds that require ongoing treatment. This clinic will provide greater access to wound care for EPMC patients. “Developing an ongoing Wound Care Clinic will help my staff and I provide a higher level of care to some of our most vulnerable patients,” says Erin Wooley, RN, MSN, Director of the Medical/Surgical Unit at Estes Park Medical Center.

Local businesses can participate in Paint Estes Pink in a couple different ways. One way is to decorate their business in Pink during the week leading up to Pink Night at the Rooftop Rodeo, July 1 – July 7, 2018. Judges will visit the businesses that week and the bestlooking one will receive an award to display for a year, with their name inscribed. Napa Auto Parts won this award in 2017. Also, businesses can collect funds by displaying a collection jar during the week of July 1-6, or by donating a portion of proceeds to the cause. The business that raises the most funds will receive an award to display

for a year, with their name inscribed.

Last year, The Elizabeth Guild was the winner.

The amount of funds raised will be announced at the Rooftop Rodeo’s Pink Night, Saturday July 7th.

New Continental Blues Band To Perform At American Legion May 25, 2018 will mark the debut performance of the “New Continental Blues Band” at the Estes Park American Legion, Post 119. The band consists of Neil McPhail on guitar and vocals, Max Padilla on drums, and Bob Horn on harmonica. Special guests will be Gary Hall on guitar, and Kevin Dennis on bass.

Neil is a long-time resident of the Estes area and was the co-founder of the original band along with New Orleans based drummer, Willie Panker. He was more recently associated with “The Blues Doctors.” Max is the rhythmic backbone of the band. He is a resident of Fort Collins and is a long-time professional. Bob is

another long-time professional from Aurora. His harmonica style will remind you of Paul Butterfield and Charlie Musselwhite. Gary is a guitarist for popular local bands “Amplified Souls” and “Most Sincerely Dead.” Kevin was a member of the locally very popular “Dennis-Tobias Band.” He currently is involved with the “Mountain Town Trio.” “Mountain Town Rockers,” and “Most Sincerely Dead.”

The evening will kick off at 6 p.m. with music from “Most Sincerely Dead.” The “New Continental Blues Band” will play from 8-10 p.m. The event is open to the public and there will be a $5.00 cover charge.

THE JOY OF REMEMBERING One of the greatest joys that most people relish in their hearts is the joy of remembering. We often hear someone bemoaning the fact that they don’t remember names or other facts like they used to. They often laughingly refer to ‘Old-timers’ disease, but, deep down inside, wonder if they are ‘catching it’. None of us want to go there, do we? We see some who wrestle with it and hope we won’t have to face that.

Have you heard about the man who asked his wife what she wanted from the kitchen.

She said, “I want ice cream. Better write it down, so you don’t forget.” He said, “I don’t need a note. Want anything on it?” “Yes, strawberries, so write a note.” “No need. Ice cream with strawberries.” “Put whipped topping on it. Write it down.” He said, “Don’t need to, I’ll remember”, as he headed out. Sometime later he returned with an order of bacon and eggs. His wife said, “I told you you couldn’t remember. You forgot my toast!”

Another story is too often played out in real life. A man was telling a friend about a wonderful restaurant he and his wife had visited recently. His friend asked, “What was the name of it?” The man stared off into space and asked, “What’s the name of that red flower with stickers?” “That’s a rose!” his friend said. The man turned to his wife and said, “Rose, what was the name of that restaurant we visited last week?”

“A mind is an awful thing to lose!” But we are seeing an increasing evidence of Alzheimer’s disease in our society. To not be able to remember is tremendously sad, for the person, the family and all who interact with them. My stepmother had it, my brother-in-law is experiencing it, and, sometimes, my wife thinks I’ve got it. If you have avoided it, be thankful for the blessing of a good mind and memory.

However, this particular week, I would like to remind us that a memory that is not used and exercised at appropriate times is almost as bad as one that ‘cannot’ harbor memories.

As we all know, Monday is Memorial Day. For many who have no memory impairment it will be considered a time for relaxation, a backyard barbeque, and a good time with family and friends.

However, as far back as 1868 it has been commemorated as a day to remember men and women who had laid down their lives in order for us to have the freedom to have the good things we enjoy in our country. On Monday, 260,000 little flags will be placed on markers at Arlington National Cemetery. Others will be placed at military cemeteries throughout the country. On Monday, thousands of runners in the Bolder Boulder will wear the names of military on their aprons. In addition to military and other public servants’ honors, flowers will be placed on graves of mothers and fathers and other loved ones who have served and sacrificed so that we could have the good things life gives us. This song is so appropriate. “Precious memories, unseen angels sent from somewhere to my soul. How they linger, ever near me, and the sacred past unfold. Precious father, loving mother, fly across the lonely years and old scenes of my childhood in fond memory appear.” Now is a good time to ponder ‘precious’ memories.

Someone has penned a phrase similar to that above: “A mind is a terrible thing to waste!” We would all agree, and we would also suspect that sometimes our failure to use our mind to remember and reflect on positive things can contribute to the loss of the capability to do so. “Use it or lose it!” Let’s give quality time this week to remembering those who have blessed our lives. It will make us thankful and bring some joy.

Starting And Growing Healthy Seedlings Dear Estes Park Gardeners, I know it may be a little late in the season to be talking about starting seeds to plant out of doors, especially in Estes Park. But I am compelled to share my cumulative experience, over the past nine years in Estes and now Loveland, of propagating vegetable seedlings.

In 2009 I started vegetable seeds in spun rock wool seeding cubes in a south facing kitchen window the last week of February. I arranged these cubes in plastic seeding trays with transparent plastic “humidome” covers to maintain a warm, moist atmosphere for the seedlings. I then flooded the trays in a hydroponic solution of seeding/rooting liquid and water such that each 1.5 inch cube was thoroughly soaked. I then waited and watched.

Results: Success, in that about 85% of my veg seeds sprouted in a week to ten days.

Failure, in that the hydroponic solution propagated more aphids than seedlings.

Fast forward to now, May 5, 2018. My indoor seeding technique has evolved to filling small to medium peat pots with potting or seeding soil, then placing a spun rock wool cube in the pot flush with the soil level, and placing one seed in the cube indention about 1/4 in deep.

Then, rather than flooding the tray with seeding solution, I hand watered each pot with the same hydroponic solution, maintaining a moderate/constant moisture for each seedling.

Results: Success, in that about 95% out of 174 seedlings sprouted.

Success: No aphids.

Failure, in that I misjudged the seedling time from tray to raised bed in Loveland.

It is about a month ahead of Estes such that I had some really leggy bean sprouts and yellow squash blossoming before I could plant them out. Lesson learned.

The advantages of this last method:

Spun rock wool cubes produce a much stronger root system for most vegetables.

But I would not recommend them for root crops, such as beets, since it crowds the root and results in a stunted crop (plant them directly into the soil in the peat pots without a rock cube).

Both peat pots and rock wool cubes are biodegradable and can be composted or turned into the soil. I find it effective to save the used, crushed peat pots as a covering mulch around the base of single stalk plants such as tomatoes. Rock wool cubes typically take about eight years to completely decompose but eventually provide essential minerals and tilth to the soil. I am currently experimenting with adding my used cubes and peat pots to a slurry of water and compost starter to hopefully speed up the decomposition process. I will report on this next year.

Two last notes: 1) Having a heating mat under the seed trays will significantly decrease the sprouting time of seeds. They usually cost less than thirty dollars each.

2) Give your seedlings a breather from the humidomes during the day and put them back on the trays for the evening.

Public Open House/Star Night At Estes Park Observatory

The Estes Valley Astronomical Society (EVAS) in conjunction with The Estes Park Memorial Observatory is offering a free public open house/star night on Saturday, May 26th, 7 p.m. The goal of EVAS is to promote amateur astronomy and education in the Estes Valley.

Our guest speaker is Scott Kindt, who has been science teacher at Berthoud High School since 1995, where he is able to use astro-photography as a way to get students interested in Astronomy. Scott Kindt has been taking astro-photos for the past two decades. As a young boy, he observed the moon through a small telescope as the Apollo Astronauts navigated the lunar surface. This event sparked a lifelong interest in Science and Astronomy.

Scott’s astro-photos have appeared in a number of publications including Homestead magazine and his astro-photos are on display in art galleries along the Front Range. He graduated from Miami University in 1989 and has spent the past twenty three years teaching high school students Physics and Astronomy.

Scott has pursued astro-photography because it is one of those eclectic endeavors that combine art and science into an exciting hobby. He often travels hundreds of miles to get the perfect deep space image or earth and sky photo.

Scott’s presentation will cover how to take astro-photos with a digital camera.

Topics will include both deep-space imaging along with earth and sky night photography. There will also be some tips on essential camera and telescope equipment. The doors will open at 7:00 p.m. and the presentation will start at 7:30 p.m.

By: Kris Hazelton The excitement started on Sunday, May 6, 2018 at 6:30 a.m. at the Embassy Suites in Loveland, CO. Gary and I met our veterans for a celebratory send-off breakfast for the 20th Northern Colorado Honor Flight.

This was to be a life-changing experience. What an honor to be with 123 Veterans from WWII, the Korean and Vietnam Wars which included six women, a POW and eight Purple Heart recipients, on a flight to Washington DC. We were part of a fabulous crew of 63 trained guardians, ready for our two day trip.

This trip started out a bit melancholy because our fearless leader, Stan Cass passed away rather unexpectedly this year. Veteran Stan Cass founded Honor Flight Northern Colorado in 2008.

The program's goal was to take World War II veterans to Washington, D.C. to see war memorials built in their honor. In its 10-year existence, it has provided free trips to almost 3,000 veterans, making it the most successful Honor Flight in the country.

Cass died April 14 at age 84, three weeks before our spring 2018 Honor Flight but everyone vowed that this flight would go off

without a hitch, in honor and memory of our friend Stan.

Outside of the Embassy Suites awaited policemen, motorcycle riders in their leathers, military members of every branch of the service, men, women and children by the hundreds, lining both sides of the road to send us on our Stan Cass way.

We were escorted to DIA by several North Colorado law enforcement agencies, two helicopters, and a group of 100+ motorcycles, as we traveled down

I-25 in four buses packed with happy veterans and their guardians.

The overpasses and frontage roads on the way to DIA were packed with flag waving, banner holding folks thanking these heroes for their service as we drove by.

We arrived at the Signature Flight Center hangar at DIA surrounded by well-wishers once again thanking the vets for their service. After a short but rousing speech

chairs were carried up the steps by strong soldiers, airmen and seamen.

The inside of the airplane was decorated to the hilt in patriotic red, white and blue and as we taxied to the runway, DIA fire department crews gave their thanks to the veterans by offering a water cannon salute.

The flight was filled with merriment and songs as members of each branch of the service were allowed on the speaker system of the plane Photo Marty Voris to sing their military fight songs while the rest of us sang along.

When we landed at Baltimore the veterans were greeted by another water cannon salute and as we disembarked, an award winning Town Crier at the gate proclaimed them all heroes of our nation. We then boarded buses headed to the Hilton Hotel at BWI complete with a police escort the entire way.

After a few minutes to freshen up, we proceeded to a special dinner in the vets honor which opened with the Pledge of Allegiance and a special Color Guard

salute. The dinner speaker was General Thomas McInerney, a retired United States Air Force Lieutenant General, who served in top military positions under the Secretary of Defense and the Vice President of the United States. McInerney was a pilot during the Vietnam War. After dinner, some of the veterans and guardians retired for the night after a long day of travel but some ventured into the lounge where service stories and laughter abounded and longtime friendships were formed.

After an early breakfast at 06:30 our group was off to Washington DC escorted

by Park Police the entire way. The Monday morning commuter traffic dropped to a standstill for these veterans as the motorcycle police officer cleared the way for these heroes.

The first stop of the journey was at the Korean/Vietnam and Lincoln Memorials.

The veterans first assembled on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial for a group photo and then there was plenty of time for veterans to see each of these special tributes to them. Some laid wreaths for their fallen comrades, others did rubbings of names of lost friends and loved ones.

After that, the buses were loaded once again and we were off to the Air Force Memorial where lunch was served.

The next stop was Arlington Memorial Cemetery where 400,000 military personnel are laid to rest. Our group was fortunate to be able to witness the Changing of the Guard as well as a special wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

Buses were loaded once again and we were on our way to the WWII Memorial with plenty of time to pause and reflect.

Viewing their memorials seemed to bring healing, closure, and a sense of pride to the men and women we were accompanying.

At the WWII Memorial, our veterans were surprised by a visit from Colorado State Senator Cory Gardener who came to thank them all for their service.

The veterans were constantly overwhelmed by the amount of “thank-yous” and handshakes they received from people everywhere they went. I hope they knew that no other group of people deserve it more.

After the WWII Memorial the buses were loaded once again for the trip back to BWI and our flight back home.

You’d think the flight would be a quiet one, with the whirlwind of travel we’d all just experienced but the excitement was still high and even more so when someone on the loudspeaker announced “Mail Call!” Veterans were each given a stack of mail hand-written by school children from Northern Colorado. Soon thereafter, laughter, tears and conversation was heard throughout the airplane. After reading the letters, the vets carefully packed it all away, stating that they would be answering each and every one of them.

After our arrival back at the Embassy Suites the veterans were each given a handmade quilt to once again thank them and as a special reminder of their trip.

A quote from one of the veterans, “I’ve never experienced anything like this trip and probably never will again, but the Honor Flight of Northern Colorado gave me a gift I will never forget. They gave me back my belief in a generous and loving country. They showed me that 40 hours of appreciation can overcome 40 years of confrontation.

Submarine Crew From USS Colorado Visits Estes Park

Mother Nature did her best to keep rain from falling at Veterans Park Saturday morning May 19th. As a result, welcoming ceremonies for the crew of the USS Colorado were held outside as planned at the Veterans Monument. The

USS Colorado was commissioned March 17 of this year and is the Navy’s newest Virginia Class submarine.

Honor Flight Northern Colorado Announces, Mission Accomplished

This year is the tenth anniversary of Honor Flight Northern Colorado. In our decade of operation we will have taken almost 3,000 Veterans, including 1,200 from WWII back to Washington D.C. Our founding mission was and is to take WWII Veterans, those who saved this nation and possibly the world, back to see the Memorial, completed in 2004, to honor them. And to do it as quickly as possible, before this "greatest generation" passed. Ladies and gentlemen, to quote COL Stan Cass, "Mission accomplished!�

Stan was our Founder and President for the past 10 years. He declared mission accomplished at our February 28th board meeting as he proposed to the board that the September 2018 Honor Flight be our final flight. The board adopted this proposal, without dissent, at the next meeting. Therefore the September 9-10, 2018 Honor Flight will be the last flight for Honor Flight Northern Colorado. COL Cass was in apparent good health at the time of this decision and we are deeply saddened that he will not be on that last flight! The last flight will be the COL Stan Cass Memorial Flight.

We are extremely fortunate to live in Northern Colorado as we have the sup-

port and trust of thousands of individuals, groups, businesses and companies.

We are an all volunteer effort with only private donations. These supporters have contributed huge amounts of effort and money to make this happen. I cannot think of any other area that would be so generous. You have made Honor Flight Northern Colorado the most successful Honor Flight in the Country. We have the added achievement of taking 800 Korean War Veterans and 700 Vietnam War Veterans back to see their Memorials. Considering we operate from a much less populated area than most Hubs we can all be proud of what we have accomplished. We need your continued support to complete our task for the deserving Veterans on this and the September Flights. They depend on it.

I speak for all the Honor Flight Veterans in thanking all of you who make this happen. I think we can all agree that Honor Flight Northern Colorado has made many people's lives better and has made Northern Colorado a better place.

Jim White of Estes Park led those in attendance in the Pledge of Allegiance before Air Force Brigadier General (Retired) Dan Scace welcomed the crew. “Today this place [Veterans Monument] helps us to recognize the men and women serving aboard the USS Colorado and together we wish them the very best as they serve our nation as members of the best Navy in the world,� said Scace.

Mayor Pro Tem Cody Walker represented the Town of Estes Park at the welcoming ceremony. “What a privilege to have high-quality sailors from the USS Colorado here in Estes Park. Last year I had the privilege of spending time with

two officers touring Colorado to make sure that this submarine truly represents the spirit of this great state. Every time I was with these guys I kept thinking, ‘I hope my son grows up to be this fine an example of a true American.’�

Town Trustees Patrick Martchink and Carlie Bangs were also present Saturday.

The military service of Trustee Ken Zornes, an Army veteran, was recognized, but he was unable to attend.

CPO Love also spoke briefly about the USS Colorado and expressed his hope that members of the submarine’s crew will be able to make more trips like this to the state in the future.

After the ceremony, the sailors toured the Stanley Hotel, were treated to lunch there, and then visited Rocky Mountain National Park before returning to the Denver area. Navy Captain (retired) Dick Life served as their guide.

Estes Park Gun & Archery Club Announces Public Days At Common Point Outdoor Range On each Saturday morning from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon, beginning June 2, 2018 until October 27, 2018; the 970 Noels Draw Lane outdoor shooting range will be open to the public.

We welcome members of our community, the front range, and out of state visitors to the Pistol, Rifle, Archery, and Trap Ranges.

Members of the Gun Club and the Public are expected to bring their own paper targets, firearms, and ammunition as well as eye and hearing protection and drinking water.

Loaner eye and ear protection will be available as will drinking water for $1.00 per bottle.

Range Safety Officers (RSOs) will be on hand to aid in the safety of handling firearms and to go over range commands and protocol.

Members of the public and or guests will be required to sign a Release of Liability Form whether they are a spectator or a shooter. The Fee for the Public to use the range will be $5.00 per person and there will be an established Sign-In Table to start your morning with us.

The Trap Range will operate only when weather permits as high winds make it unsafe to operate the trap barrier curtains. The Fee for Trap is $8.00 per round.

Directions to the Range can be found on the Club’s website www.epgunarchery.com.

The range is located about 5-1/2 miles east of Estes Park at mile marker 68.5 on Highway 34 and look for signs near the range road and bridge.

There is a restroom on site but no running water so bring your own drinks or you may purchase water at the sign-in table. Also, bring sun screen for the hot days as shade is very limited. There is plenty of parking available and all shooters are expected to know and abide

by NRA safe rules of handling firearms and if unsure of these rules, an RSO will be glad to go over them with you.

The Basics Of Pistol Shooting This Basics of Pistol Shooting Course will be offered on June 2. This one-day course is open to the general public and no previous firearms experience is required. The course includes both classroom and live-fire training with an emphasis on firearm safety, handgun knowledge, and marksmanship. Students will shoot both revolvers and semi-automatic handguns. Textbook, course materials, handguns, targets, ammunition and range fees are all included. If you are considering buying a handgun, wait until after you take this course. This class exceeds the minimum state requirements to apply for a Colorado Concealed Handgun Permit. Usual class make-up includes students with no firearms experience, students with significant experience and 40-60% women, including many couples. Tuition is $140.00 for general public and $125.00 for Estes Park Gun & Archery Club

members, due on the day of class.

The above course will be taught by a nationally certified Advanced Pistol Instructor. This course will be taught at the Estes Park Gun and Archery Club Indoor Range, located at Community Drive and Highway 36, next to the dog park. The class is limited to eight students and advanced registration is required. Rotary Brings Water Safety Message To Kindergarteners

Kindergarten students at Estes Park Elementary School had a close encounter with an otter Friday, May 18. They learned how to keep themselves safe around water and to always be with an adult. These lifesaving lessons were delivered by Estes Park Rotary Club members, friends and a rather large otter.

“We read to all four kindergarten classes as a follow up to last year’s program where we visited kindergarten and first grade classes,” Said Chuck Bonza, Rotary Club of Estes Park member and project coordinator. “We were happy to see that Stephanie Hart had scheduled staff from the aquatic center to talk to the students about water safety, which reinforced our Josh the Baby Otter lesson.”

Father-daughter duo Jay and Daffney Harroff read to Stephanie Hart’s class, a special treat for Daffney, a high school student who was once one of Hart’s students. Alice Schwartz read to Edie Keller’s students, Jim Austin visited with Anne Leija’s class, and Kathy Groesbeck shared the touching story with Emily Jurgens’ students.

Following the short classroom lesson on water safety, the students went to the playground, where Josh the Baby Otter greeted them. Each child received a copy of the book to read at home.

“Many, many hugs were the order of the day on the playground,” Bonza said.

“After the four kindergarten classes, the first graders came out, and it all started again with the love and hugs for Josh.”

Josh the Baby Otter book and materials were created by the Joshua Collingsworth Memorial Foundation with a goal of educating children with a fun and simple message: “To stay away from water unless accompanied by an adult.” That message has been carried to over 1 million children across the nation. Paul Foreman, a Rotarian from Colorado Springs, lost two of his grandsons in the river at Pinewood Springs two years ago. He has led the effort in Colorado to bring Josh and the reading program to hundreds of kindergartners in elementary school, and especially to Estes Park Elementary where his grandsons were students.

Lions Club Donates To Help Get Kids Into Rocky Mountain National Park

On May 18th Estes Park Lions Club members met with RMNP rangers and gave a $1,500 donation to the park. This is an annual donation the Lions Club has done for more than 10 years in the memory of an Estes Park Lion and Park ranger by the name of Bob Basilla. The money is designated for transportation and entry for school children to come to the park for a day with rangers. We were told many of the children who come are local kids who have never been in the park. Pictured are Mike Hentosh, Lions President, presenting the check to ranger volunteer, Charlotte Skolnick.

May They Never Be Forgotten

Following in his father’s footsteps, Walter Miguel had already established his reputation as an excellent carpenter. He was also a skilled mechanic and somehow found time to deliver fresh milk throughout town from a horse-drawn wagon. That’s where he acquired his nickname— “Wave.” He was known for whistling all along his route and greeting everyone he met with a friendly wave of the hand.

When Wave boarded the troop transport Katoomba on Sept.

1, 1918 he shared the excitement of everyone onboard. Wave was bound for Europe to serve with General Pershing’s American Expeditionary Forces. On Nov. 10th—less than three months after he set foot on French soil—he would fall victim to an artillery shell in Louppy sur Loison, France. He died the day before the armistice ending the fighting in World War I was signed. Six days later he would be buried in a shallow grave near where he fell wearing his uniform, overcoat, and covered with a simple piece of burlap. On June 18, 1919 Wave’s body was disinterred, he was placed in a simple pine casket, and reburied in Grave #52 Section 94 Plot 2 in what was to become the Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery near Romagne, France.

This Monday our nation will celebrate Memorial Day. In cemeteries from coast to coast the graves of veterans will be decorated with red, white, and blue; patriotic ceremonies will be conducted at war memorials; and the American Legion Auxiliary will be out and about selling poppies to raise money for disabled veterans.

For many Americans Memorial Day means just one thing: the first weekend of summer. But the truth is that since the days of the Civil War Americans have set aside a day to honor the sacrifices of their war dead. In actuality, the tradition can be traced back thousands of years to the ancient Greeks and Romans.

On May 5, 1868, General John A. Logan, leader of an organization supporting Union Civil War veterans, called for a nationwide day of remembrance. “The 30th of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the land,” was his proclamation.

In the beginning, Memorial Day, as it came to be called, honored only those

killed during the Civil War. But with the advent of World War I, the holiday expanded to commemorate American military personnel who had died in all wars. For decades it continued to be celebrated on May 30th, no matter the day of the week. It wasn’t until Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act of 1968 that Memorial Day was set to be observed the last Monday in May. The change went into effect in 1971.

Figures provided by the Department of Defense and the Department of Veterans Affairs estimate that almost 1.2 million Americans have sacrificed their lives during times of war in our nation’s history.

These are the men and women we remember on Memorial Day. Like 46 thousand other WWI war dead, Wave’s body was eventually repatriated at the request of his family. He was a passenger on the U.S.A.T. Wheaton when it sailed from Antwerp, Belgium on Sept. 20, 1921. After arriving at Hoboken, New Jersey his flagcovered coffin traveled with the remains of one hundred and four other soldiers on a train bound for Chicago. Their final destinations? The hometowns they had left behind to serve in in the military.

Memorial Day is our opportunity to honor those who gave everything for the freedoms we so often take for granted.

Wave was just one of the many whose lives were cut short and whose dreams were never realized. His parents sent three sons to fight in France, but only two returned home. This is a poem his mother wrote for the memorial service his family held a year to the day after Wave left for the training center at Camp Pike in Arkansas: He left so young and bright.

It was Walter Wave that left us, this awful war to fight.

To face the wicked bullets and other things to come, When so soon his life was taken— our good and loving son.

But there is one that will never forget him as he sleeps across the sea.

For in his last letter, he says, “Dearest Mother, the old home looks good to me.”

Let us remember and honor each of our fallen soldiers on Monday and every day that follows. May they never be forgotten.

Library Closed Saturday And Monday Summer Hours Begin Tuesday

The Estes Valley Library will be closed all day this Saturday, May 26 to allow for a maintenance project to the technical network. All services, including Wi-Fi and storytimes, will be unavailable on Saturday. Once completed, the upgrades will assure that the library’s technical infrastructure will remain strong for years to come.

The library will be open this Sunday, May 27 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The library

will then be closed all day on Monday, May 28 for the Memorial Day holiday.

What’s Happening At The Estes Valley Library Summer Reading Program 2018: “Libraries Rock” Summer is an excellent time for reading, and the Library has developed a full roster of programs, activities, and prize incentives to keep all ages inspired this season. This summer’s theme is “Libraries Rock,” with events that weave music themes into a festive community celebration of literacy and learning.

Reading logs for all ages (including babies, preschoolers, children, teens, and adults) are now available. The Summer Reading Program is made possible through a generous donation from the Estes Valley Library Friends & Foundation.

Library Closed May 26 and May 28 This Memorial Day weekend, the Library will be completing a maintenance project on its technical network. With vital services unavailable, the library will be closed all day this Saturday, May 26.

The library will re-open on Sunday, May 27 from 1 to 5 p.m. The library will be closed Monday, May 28 for Memorial Day. Regular summer hours will resume on May 29.

Curiosity and Discovery Programs Our Wonderful World: Adventure on the Silk Road Beginning Monday, June 4, 7 p.m., American Legion There are ten nights of armchair traveladventure in store this summer, as the popular Our Wonderful World series returns—this summer in a new location: the American Legion Post 119 at 850 N. St. Vrain Avenue. Programs begin June 4 with “A Motorcycle Adventure on the Silk Road, ” presented by Fritz Sampson.

All presentations are on Mondays at 7 pm, and are free to the public.

Learn to Play Ukulele

Wednesday, June 6, 9:30-10:30 a.m., Makerspace Repeated Tuesday, July 10, 6:30 -7:30 p.m., Makerspace Beginners will learn basic chords that can go with many songs, and no experience is necessary. These agencies give wonderful help in recycling the goods donated by the generous people of Estes Valley.

Delivering Library Materials Discovery Kits: Music, Knitting, and More The library offers a growing collection of Discovery Kits, which are packs filled with everything needed to learn a new skill. Beginning June 1, as part of the Summer Reading Program, the Library will offer kits on how to learn and play the ukulele, the pat bells, and Tibetan singing bowls.

A resource now available is the “Learn to Knit” kit, which includes needles, a how-to book, and yarn. Also available are kits on how to complete one’s endof-life Advanced Care directives. Visit the library or search the online catalog to borrow or place holds on these items.

Lazy B Wranglers Start Summer Show Season June 16th At The Elkhorn Lodge The Lazy B Wranglers are excited to announce the start of our season on Saturday, June 16th. We will again be performing at The Elkhorn Lodge with a format that includes a chuckwagon style dinner followed by entertainment featuring great humor and western music. Barbara Barleen continues as the show emcee which features performers with roots in Colorado, including local yodeler and guitar player, Vic Anderson.

Multiple changes have been made this year as we strive to enhance the guest experience and differentiate the Lazy B as the western theme event and entertainment venue to enjoy while in Estes Park.

Michael Arnott will be taking over as the seasonal General Manager responsible for marketing and daily operations.

Michael brings decades of experience promoting, performing in, and managing entertainment venues. New features this year include two song lists, alternating each night and providing something new for guests who enjoy multiple visits each summer. Beyond the enhanced show option will be a guest appearance by local singing cowboy Brad Fitch, who will sing with the Wranglers on three different occasions.

Kick off your Memorial Day weekend with a trip down your rock and roll memory lane! Friday evening, May 25, 6-10 p.m. promises to be great fun at the American Legion Hall. The evening starts with a performance by the Really Most Sincerely Dead band playing your Grateful Dead favorites, followed

by The New Continental Blues Band which is a reincarnation of the original Continental Blues Band from the early 80s in the Estes Valley.

Really Most Sincerely Dead has been a local favorite for the past several years, performing in a variety of local venues.

Band members include Gary Hall at lead/electric guitar, Linda Adam-Hall at acoustic guitar, Kevin Dennis at bass guitar, Frank Theis at keyboard, and Mike Cech at drums.

The New Continental Blues Bands is a recent revival of the harmonica/guitar driven down-home Chicago/Texas style blues of the original Continental Blues Band. Sweet Pets Need New, Forever Homes

Olivia is three years old. She is friendly with people and good on a leash. She is house trained and knows lots of commands, including “shake” and “rollover.”

Dani is a sweet, adorable, friendly, and relatively calm six month old girl. She does well with other dogs and kitties too!

Currently Dani has a virus that is contagious to other dogs so a single dog home would be best or a home with dogs older that are immune. After she is better she will love to play with other canine friends. Chapter AV P. E.O. of Estes Park is making plans to celebrate its 100th anniversary on Saturday, June 16, 2018 from 2-4 p.m. at the Presbyterian Church of the Rockies.

The organizational meeting of Chapter AV took place on June 6, 1918 with several state officers and members of Chapter L of Loveland in attendance at the home of Alberta Sprague. Our history is interwoven with the history of Estes Park as most of the twelve charter members were wives of the founding fathers.

The only transferring charter member was Alberta Sprague, who had belonged to Chapter L in Loveland. She and her husband Abner Sprague owned and operated Sprague’s Hotel. The other charter members were all initiated on organization day. They were, Areanna Sprague Chapman; Elizabeth Chapman, niece of Sam Service, the town’s first general store proprietor; Edna Brush Lester, she and her husband C. E. Lester owned and operated the Old English Hotel on Fish Creek Road; Jessica Macdonald, she and her husband owned the general store that later became the Macdonald’s book store; Betty Macdonald; Minnie March, built and operated Fall River Lodge; Jennie James, married to Dr. Homer James and she and Mary Anne Foote opened and operated their own store on Elkhorn; Eleanor Hondius, started the first library in Estes Park; Sallie Reed, she and her husband Charles built the Brynwood Ranch in Moraine Park; Anita Lewis, she and her husband A. D. Lewis built the Lewiston Hotel, and Sara Wiest, married to Dr. Roy Wiest who served as Mayor and practiced medicine for 59 years.

Many P. E.O. ’s were among those visitors who spent the whole summer vacationing in Estes Park. AV members held an open meeting at the Brynwood to entertain visiting P. E.O. ’s in August, 1920.

This became the Summer Reciprocity Luncheon which continues to be held each August in Estes Park to this day.

As Estes Park began to grow, the size of the chapter grew until it became so large it was difficult to hold meetings in

homes. So a new chapter was organized in 1974 with 12 of our members transferring to the new chapter. And this has happened several times. Today there are a total of seven P. E.O. chapters in Estes Park as well as a Summer Group whose members are P. E.O. ’s from around the country that continue to spend summers here.

P. E.O. is an organization of women, by women and for women. P.E. O. supports women both through friendships and the bonds of sisterhood and through educational scholarships, grants, awards and loans.

It is one of the oldest women’s organizations in North America. What started with a bond of friendship between seven young women in 1869, P. E.O. has grown to more than 6,000 local chapters with nearly a quarter of a million members in the United States and Canada. A legacy passed down through generations of women, P.E. O. has deep roots in local communities and our influence reaches to all corners of the globe.

During the 100 years of operation, Chapter AV P. E.O. has had a total membership of 318 individuals.

Throughout the years our members donated freely and implemented numerous fund raising projects to support a variety of local, state and international educational scholarships for women.

This year is a year of celebrating, discovering and reminiscing about our beginning 100 years ago. Kathleen Black, Chapter AV’s current president, chose our theme “A Century of AV’s” to reflect on then and now and how awesome P. E.O. is still. AV grows and changes as members come and go but through it all worthy projects are supported and sisterhood remains our defining characteristic.

The 2018 Youth In Action awarded $2500 in grants to four local nonprofit organizations. The grant monies will fund vital programs that will have a lasting impact for our community.

As part of the Estes Park local scholarship ceremony held on May 16, Youth In Action members kicked off the evening of giving by awarding grants to the following local nonprofit organizations: $1,050 to Estes Valley Investment in Childhood Success to fund parent education classes. $550 to Estes Park Cycling Coalition toward funding a  Skills Park and Pump Track for families, visitors & the EPHS Mountain Bike team. $550 to Mission: New Earth to provide cameras and equipment for youth photography programs. $350 to the League of Women Voters: Junior Election program, including youth focused candidate forums and Meet & Greets with elected officials.

Thanks to a generous grant from the Community Foundation of Northern Colorado, youth were able to learn about nonprofits, funding, and decision-mak-

ing through their grant program. Youth decided on the types of projects they wanted to fund based on their knowledge of the community, much of which was gained by serving on nonprofit leadership boards. All decisions on funding were made by youth.

Youth In Action is a collaborative program of the Estes Park Nonprofit Resource Center, Estes Park School District, Communities That Care Coalition, and the Estes Valley Library. Thanks to the support of participating local nonprofits that have opened their organizations to hearing the youth voice, Youth In Action continues to grow and will be a course offered for ninth through twelfth graders beginning this fall. John Richard “Dick” Buckner John Richard “Dick” Buckner passed peacefully at home in Estes Park, CO on May 13, 2018 at age 87. He was born Jan. 15th, 1931 in Pleasant Hill, MO and was the only child of John “Jack” Thornton Buckner and Marjorie Ellen Pearce. He married Edith Mary Essex in 1951 and had 3 sons (John “Jack” Leslie Buckner, Michael Richard Buckner, and David Arthur Buckner) who were born between 1955 & 1961. In 1995, he married Sue Anna McDuffie Daghestani and they moved to Estes Park to be close to nature and enjoy living in the mountains that they both grew up sharing a great love for.

Dick grew up in Pleasant Hill and after high school he attended Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX and received his B. S. in Electrical Engineering and later his M. S. in the same field. He served in the U. S. Army Signal Corp during the Korean War. After his service, he worked for Continental Electronics for the next 10 years in the Commercial Broadcasting Department where he specialized in Very Low Frequency (VLF) and High Frequency (HF) communications related equipment.

For more than 5 decades, Dick was engaged in engineering, evaluating, and improving vital national defense communications programs. Working with Collins Radio, later RockwellCollins, Dick was a key developer of successful long-range, very-low and high-frequency, (VLF and HF) communications systems that were the centerpieces of America’s strategic nuclear deterrence command and control systems. With customers in the Space and Naval Warfare command and Navy Electronics Command, later Naval Air Systems Command, Dick contributed significant work to the development of the second, third, and fourth generation of the airborne Very Low Frequency EC-130 and E-6 airborne communications systems that linked national leadership with our strategic nuclear defense systems comprised of submarines, missile silos and longrange bomber forces. He worked daily with defense contractors, Navy operational leaders, Navy engineers, testers, and logisticians, as well as senior Navy headquarters, and senior Secretary of Defense communications systems policy makers. Later in life he developed a family of communications propagation tools used by the military and private HF “Ham” operators to improve their success in long-range communications.

Among the many projects he helped develop and support were US Navy

shore-based VLF and HF systems and airborne VLF and HF systems known as TACAMO, Take Charge And Move Out, a powerful 200,000 watt Very Low Frequency transmitter. He continued to support improvements in long-range communications effectiveness well into his retirement years, providing advice and technical assistance to today’s generation of communications engineers and program managers.

As a result of his work with the Navy, he developed the ACE (Animated Communications Effectiveness) concept -- a method for allowing our submarines to communicate in a given situation. He most recently designed the ACE-HF system simulation software for use in military, commercial, and amateur radio applications that are used worldwide. This software allows radio operators to know when, where, and how they can communicate with others.

Dick also loved the outdoors and often used to hike into the backcountry and camp with his sons when they were younger. He still enjoyed hiking even in his later years and enjoying exploring off the trails and taking pictures of wildlife and scenery. Since he was a boy, he was also a railroad enthusiast and enjoyed traveling to historical railroad sites and taking pictures of old trestles and locomotives. He was an avid reader and could often be found with a book (or Kindle) in hand. He had a great love for Native American History, as well as Egyptology, gothic cathedrals, and pipe organs.

Since 1970, his future wife Sue worked right alongside Dick and they were recognized as “the” experts in their field. Their skills complemented each other so well that after 25 years, it truly grew into a great love story. At the time of his passing, they knew each other for 48 years and each put the other’s best interests ahead of their own.

Dick was extremely dedicated and driven to serve our country and had a pivotal role in ensuring the freedom and security that we enjoy today. He was passionate about his work and continued working until the age of 83 because he had enjoyed doing what he loved for so long.

The success of the programs that Dick developed and their longevity throughout and past the Cold War era is an accomplishment that Dick shared with a strong and supportive team, as well as the multitude of people that he mentored throughout his career. The

communications systems developed during Dick’s working years continues to take to the air every day and assure the President and the Nation that our most powerful strategic forces are ready to defend us at that moment when they are needed most.

His legacy will not only be his work, but also his generosity and impact on those around him, as well as those who never knew him. He is predeceased by his 1st wife, Edith Mary Essex, his parents, Jack and Marjorie, his maternal grandparents, Dr. Gilbert Dorset Pearce and Minnie Huestes Shaw, and his paternal grandparents, John Armstrong Buckner and Mary Barrett Thornton.

He is survived by his wife Sue Buckner, his 3 sons (John, Michael, & David),

and his stepson Mel Daghestani.
