The Town of Estes Park invites the public to learn about and provide input on proposed turn lanes on U.S. 36 at Community Drive at a presentation and open house May 9 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Estes Park Museum meeting room, 200 Fourth St. The project will help accommodate traffic accessing the Town’s Events Complex. The open house provides the public an opportunity to review and comment on the preliminary design plans submitted by the Town’s consultant, Cornerstone Engineering. The plans are 30 percent complete and under technical review by Town staff. Residents are encouraged to arrive by 5 p.m. for an overview presentation and stay for the open house to review and comment on design drawings. For individuals who cannot attend the May 9 meeting, project materials will be available online by May 1 at www.estes.org/US36turnlanes. Written comments may be mailed to Town of Estes Park Public Works, RE: U.S. 36 Turn Lanes, P.O. Box 1200, Estes Park, CO 80517 or emailed to publicworks@estes.org no later than May 16. The need for these improvements was identified in the traffic study prepared in November 2009 for the Town’s Event Center project. Because the upgrades to the Events Complex would result in increased traffic through the U.S. 36/Community Drive intersection, CDOT has designated the Town as the responsible party to install the improvements. In 2014, CDOT agreed to allow the Town to defer construction of these turn lanes due to the flood recovery efforts underway at that time. For more information, please contact the Public Works Department at 970577-3587.

Wind Project Website Launched

1700 Brodie Ave, across from High School More Information at pccrusa.org and 970-586-4404 Sunday Services at 10am

Pipe Organ - Chapel Choir - Bell Choirs - Child care available

Residents of Estes Park, Fort Collins, Longmont and Loveland now have access to information about the planned 150-megawatt Roundhouse Renewable Energy Project that will nearly triple the current wind power capacity that Platte River Power Authority delivers to its owner communities. Roundhouse Renewable Energy, a subsidiary of Enyo Renewable Energy, launched a website on Earth Day – roundhouse-renewable.com – from which people may obtain information about the wind project and its progress through the regulatory and construction phases, as well as engage with project developers. Specifically, the site features pages with facts about the project, its benefits to the regional economy, and mitigation of impacts. It will feature project milestones and a way to contact the project team with questions or comments. Roundhouse developers will aggregate the questions and provide answers on a page of the website. “We are excited to provide up-to-date information concerning this pivotal project,” said Christine Mikell, CEO of Enyo Renewable Energy. “We are proud to partner with Platte River’s owner communities to achieve their renewable energy goals.”

“Our owner communities are engaged with energy issues,” said Jason Frisbie, general manager and CEO of Platte River. “As an energy leader in northern Colorado, we are pleased to continue to diversify our portfolio and provide more carbon-free energy while maintaining our financial sustainability and system reliability.” Frisbie added that a link to the new site will be featured from the Platte River website. Following direction from its current Integrated Resource Plan, Platte River in 2017 issued a request for proposals to add approximately 50 megawatts of new wind power capacity to its generating portfolio. Responses to the RFP were very favorable and, in January, Platte River signed a power purchase agreement with Roundhouse Renewable Energy for the 150 megawatts of new wind power capacity to serve its four owner communities. Under current plans, the wind farm will feature approximately 75 turbines that will provide up to 150 megawatts of wind power capacity. Planners estimate the project will generate enough electricity each year to power nearly half of all the homes in Platte River’s owner communities. Construction is slated to begin in 2019 and the wind farm will begin producing power in 2020. Platte River Power Authority is a notfor-profit wholesale electricity generation and transmission provider that delivers safe, reliable, environmentally responsible and competitively priced energy and services to its owner communities of Estes Park, Fort Collins, Longmont and Loveland, Colorado, for delivery to their utility customers. Enyo Renewable Energy, a joint venture between MAP® Renewable Energy and Enyo, LLC, is a wind and solar development company specializing in developing utility-scale renewable energy projects. Enyo’s specialized knowledge of the Intermountain West coupled with its focus on building relationships allows Enyo to build for the long-term benefit of our host communities and project partners.

Colorado Parks & Wildlife Reminds Us That Spring Is The Season To Be Bear Aware Learn how to do your part to help keep our wildlife wild. Colorado Parks and Wildlife reminds outdoor recreationists, city dwellers and rural homeowners that early spring is the time to become Bear Aware. As bears emerge from hibernation, all Coloradans need to be responsible and take steps to minimize human-bear interactions. It’s important to think ahead and be Bear Aware now when preparing your home, neighborhood and outdoor plans with the change in seasons. Bears are omnivores and primarily eat vegetation such as grasses, forbs, berries, acorns, and seeds, which are usually available as bears emerge from hibernation. Human-bear interactions tend to increase in the summer months, however, when a late frost or warm, dry weather can lead to localized natural food failures. This can cause black bears from affected areas to become more mobile and persistent in search of human food sources like trash, fruit trees, pet food, bird feeders, livestock and agricultural products. Bears have an extremely keen sense of smell and excellent memories, and once they have learned about a reliable source of food, they will often return. "It's critical for folks to remember that if a bear finds a meal in or around your home and becomes unafraid of people, it is more likely that a human-bear interaction can occur," said Mark Lamb, Area Wildlife Manager for CPW. "Careless behavior by people, whether leaving your trash out, keeping a dirty campsite or, worst of all, purposely feeding a bear, is most often what leads to these interactions. Unfortunately, our wildlife managers are then tasked to remedy many avoidable problems." CPW officials say black bears typically do not hunt humans in Colorado; however, because they are large powerful animals, they pose a very serious risk to human health and safety when they become conditioned to finding meals from human sources. "If you accidentally corner or surprise a bear, remember that one bite or swipe from that bear could lead to a person receiving life-threatening injuries, or worse," said Lamb. "Human health and safety is always our primary concern." It requires diligence on the part of people to keep bears from becoming human food-dependent at home or while recreating. That effort can begin now; establishing proper Bear Aware behavior in the spring can create good habits that help minimize conflicts throughout the year.

Tips to prevent human/bear conflicts for homeowners include: Keep garbage in a well-secured enclosure and only put out garbage on the morning of pickup. Use a bear-resistant trash can or dumpster. These are available from your trash hauler or on Internet sites. Clean all garbage cans regularly to keep them odor free. The scent of ammonia can deter bears. Take down all bird feeders -- birds don't need to be fed during the summer. Bird feeders are a major source of bear/human conflicts. Don't leave pet food or stock feed outside -- never provide food sources for any wildlife. Keep garage doors closed. Review CPW’s Bearproofing Your Home Fact Sheet. Conduct a home audit to be sure you are not attracting bears to your property. Talk to your neighbors and kids about being bear aware. Tips for outdoor recreationists and travelers: Read CPW’s Camping and Hiking in Bear Country page to prepare for your trip. Pay attention to the surroundings and watch for bear signs, such as tracks or claw or bite marks on trees. Make noise while walking or hiking to prevent surprising a bear. Clap, sing or talk loudly. Travel in a group if possible. Do not keep food in your vehicle; roll up windows and lock the doors of your vehicles. When car-camping, secure all food and coolers in a locked vehicle after you’ve eaten. Keep a clean camp, whether you’re in a campground or in the back-country. When camping in the back-country, hang food 100 feet or more from your campsite Cook food well away from your tent; wash dishes thoroughly. Don’t bring any food or fragrant items into your tent. Review CPW’s Camping and Hiking in Bear Country brochure. Recreationists, residents and visitors are reminded to contact the nearest Colorado Parks and Wildlife office to file a report of injured or problem wildlife. Sometimes we go someplace where we have to take off our shoes. The bowling alley, the shoe store, Nia class, someone else’s house, and eventually our own homes (unless you sleep with your shoes on). Shoe removal can make a person feel quite vulnerable, especially for those who have trouble baring their soles. If this is a problem for you, you can find videos online that will help you with how to remove your shoes in front of others. Oh wait… that’s how to remove the stink from your shoes. And creases, scuffs, gum, polish, tar and asphalt. If there is anything on your shoes you want off, the removal How To is just a click away. Better yet, take off your shoes instead of what’s on your shoes and you’ll have hap-hap-happy feet. Going barefoot is supposed to be good for you because walking with naked feet strengthens your foot muscles, which improves balance. Plus, shoes are often the cause of ped pain. They also track dirt, germs and other nasties into your home, so as the song goes, it is best to “leave all your blues in your shoes by the door. ” When I go to clogging practice I take off my street shoes and put on my dance shoes, as does everyone else in the group. Recently we were all sitting on a long bench after practice, changing our shoes, when we started paying attention to how we each tied our shoes. No two people did it the same way, which I found quite amazing. (I’m easily amazed.) There were bunny ears, the circle technique, the magic fingers style, the traditional loop-around-push-through, the twotimes loop-around, the double knot and mutations thereof. One of the youngsters pushed each aglet (the plastic sheath at the end of the shoelace that prevents it from fraying) back through its eyelet to make bunny ears, then crisscrossed the ears and pulled them into a tidy knot. She claims the Easter Bunny showed her how to do this. I learned to tie my shoes when I was about five years old (no Easter Bunny in sight). I practiced by using a piece of card-

board into which my mother poked holes and wove a shoelace back and forth through. Why she didn’t just hand me a shoe to practice on, I know knot. But it worked, and I am a capable shoe-tier today. Some tiers go for speed, some for perfection (i. e., loops of equal size, strings flat against the shoe, the knot smack-dab in the middle), still others tie just-so for comfort, and others will do anything to keep their laces from coming undone. It’s complicated, isn’t it? Try tying your shoe using someone else’s step-by-step and you’re likely to end up with a tangled mess of fingers and string, and shoes that won’t stay on your feet when you walk away in frustration. I like my way the best of all the techniques I’ve seen, which is the loop-aroundpush-through with the extended-rightthumb variation to keep my string taut. Oddly enough, everyone I’ve asked likes their own way best, no matter how many times I’ve shown them my graceful, adroit tactic. (I can’t say there’s been a lot of interest when I bring up the topic, which I do by saying, “You’re shoe’s untied. ” (Pause.) “Made ya look! ” This was hilarious (to me, anyway) when I started saying it in fifth grade. Now people just look at me with a mix of pity and irritation and tell me to hold my tongue.) No Velcro for this shoelace-kind-of-gal. I like the tiny satisfaction that comes with a good, secure loop-around-push-through bow on the top of my shoe. It’s the little things in life, ya know? To each his own, any stubborn shoe-tying adult might reply when I suggest they try my tie. To that I say, may your socks grow holes and your big toes poke through! And hey, you’re shoe’s untied. Bike Park Fundraising Challenge! The Stanley Park Bike Park Has Broken Ground!

The Estes Park Cycling Coalition (EPCC) has been working for three years advocating, partnering and planning to make the Stanley Park Bike Park a reality. The Bike Park will provide a family friendly fun place to ride bikes for Estes Valley residents as well as out of town visitors. The park will have a variety of riding features and terrain, including a skills course with challenging features such as banked corners, table-tops, and rocks to ride over for all skill levels. There will also be pump tracks for beginner bike riders to advanced. The mile and a half perimeter trail has already been completed. Although the Estes Valley Recreation and Parks District and the Estes Valley Trails Committee have committed funds to construct the Bike Park, the EPCC would like to add terrain features to enhance the park. EPCC is joining forces with First Colorado Realty to raise funds to purchase technical features to enhance the trails. Technical trail features are built to add a degree of difficulty and fun to a trail. Sometimes these features are built to span areas, other times they exist purely as an alternate line to a trail. In a generous offer and challenge to other Estes Park residents, businesses

and bike enthusiasts everywhere, First Colorado Realty has put up a matching donation of $5,000. For every dollar raised between now and the end of May, First Colorado Realty will match other donations up to $5,000. “We are excited to see the Bike Park finally become to reality,” said Christian Collinet, owner, First Colorado Realty. “This matching fundraising challenge is a creative way to raise awareness of the Bike Park needs and challenge others to donate for a great cause.” The Estes Park Cycling Coalition has created a Go-Fund-Me fundraising website to raise funds for the Bike Park trail features. The goal is to raise $20,000 by the end of May. If you have any questions about the Bike Park, please contact Mike Lewelling, president of the Estes Park Cycling Coalition at: board@bikeestes.org Please consider assisting the creation of a family friendly recreational destination by helping to fund this project. Youth In Action “Sharks” To Hear Grant Finalist Presentations May 7 Four local nonprofit organizations will present their final pleas for funding in front of the “Sharks” of Youth In Action (YIA). YIA is a leadership club for youth ages 14-18 that provides opportunities to build leadership skills through service to our nonprofit community. YIA connects youth and philanthropy through youth serving as board advisors to nonprofits, as well as implementing the Community Grants Process for local nonprofit projects. A collaborative program of Estes Park Nonprofit Resource Center (EPNRC), Estes Park School District, Estes Valley Library, and the Communities That Care coalition, YIA members have narrowed projects to four finalists based on criteria they set. Estes Valley Investment in Childhood Success (EVICS), Mission: New Earth, Junior Election (League of Women Voters), and Estes Valley Cycling Coalition will make presentations in a “Shark Tank” style event on Monday, May 7, 5-7 p.m. at the Pres-

byterian Church of the Rockies. Each organization will answer questions from the “Sharks” and do their best to show how their project will benefit the community. Thanks to support from the Community Foundation of Northern Colorado, youth have $2,500 to fund one or more projects through this grant process. YIA members not only learn about nonprofit decision-making, funding sources, and structure, but also are empowered to share the youth perspective, be informed citizens, and life-long philanthropists. Join the YIA “Sharks” on May 7 in the “Shark Tank.” YIA members for 2017/2018 include: Phoebe Dillon, Sebastian Mohr, Mary Riggenberg, Molly Morgan, Alex Leija, Sabrina Rittner, and Will Thomas. All are welcome as audience members and for light refreshments after the presentations. The Estes Park Senior Citizens Center, Inc. was formed 42 years ago to support the seniors in the Estes Park community. More than half of the Town's citizens are seniors. The EPSCC has about 600 members. “Our members wanted us to find a place where they could enjoy coffee, conversation and a catered lunch,” said Betty Hull, Treasurer of the EPSCC. “We're so looking forward to doing that in our new home,” she said. Then she added: “We're back! ” For more information, to join or to rejoin the EPSCC, send an email to EPSCCtr@gmail.com. Watch this newspaper for information on the Grand Opening.

state - a deep place of connection and presence with self and one's world through mind intent, conscious breathing, and body awareness. Chi Kung forms can involve either movement (eyes open and feet moving), or stillness (eyes gently closed, seated or standing). Both external and internal forms combine breath, posture, and intent of mind and can include visualizations, self-massage, and sound to enhance healing, and aid in the prevention of common illnesses. The practice is basic and simple; the form is soft, relaxed, yet, direct in feeling the energy deeply. By learning to move energy through the palms of the hands, gathering from nature, heaven and earth while quieting the mind and centering in the heart, this energy is transformed and transmitted into the organs, tissues, and functions of the body, encouraging healing. Chi Kung creates a relaxed emotional and mental state with body full of life force energy. Current classes with Janet Biasi are being held on Fridays from 9-10:15 a.m., at the Estes Valley Community Center, seniors are welcome.

Healing Waters Welcomes High School Students

Healing Waters Warm Water pool was full of energy the other day as the students of the Sports Medicine Class from the high school came by. Bethany Matthias was there and explained to the class how the warm water setting is so beneficial for rehabilitation along with an excellent way to cross train and condition for sports. All the students got in the pool and tried out the underwater treadmill with and without the jets and used other equipment for strengthening. Many of the students thought it would be a great way to train for running and swimming. In fact, several of the swimmers used the jets to swim against.

Their instructor Pam Frey has come the past few years to expose the students to this great option of hydrotherapy. Hydrotherapy is becoming a very popular avenue to achieve improved fitness, rehab after a surgery, or strengthening before surgery. The warm water relaxes muscles and joint pain is decreased in the water. In fact, many people have avoided back surgeries by using this mode of exercise. Healing Waters is a non-profit warm (not hot) water pool located at 1632 Big Thompson Ave, open to the public. 970586-9205. Open six days a week.

NO PROBLEMS? Norman Vincent Peale authored an all-time bestseller, The Power of Positive Thinking. He passed away in 1993, at 95 years of age, after a positive-thinking ministry that brought peace and encouragement to untold numbers of people who learned from him that we are responsible for the attitude that we choose to have. He firmly believed that ‘God don’t make junk’, therefore, we have two choices every morning when we wake up: to feel good about ourselves or to feel lousy. His honest challenge to each of us: “Why would you choose the latter?” With this challenge he impacted many people. How about us? Why would we choose to feel lousy about ourselves rather than feel good? He liked to tell this story: “One day I was walking down the street, when I saw my friend George approaching. I could see he wasn’t overflowing with an exuberance of human existence. George was dragging bottom. I asked him, ‘How are you, George?’ George took my inquiry seriously and for fifteen minutes he enlightened me on how bad he felt. The more he talked, the worse I felt. Finally I said, ‘Well, George, I’m sorry to see you so depressed. How did you get this way?’ That really set him off. ‘It’s my problems,’ he said, ‘Problems---always problems. I’m fed up with them. If you could get rid of all my problems, I’d contribute $5000.00 to your favorite charity.’ Well now, I’m never one to turn a deaf ear to such an offer, and so I meditated and ruminated and cogitated on it and came up with an answer. I said, ‘Yesterday I went to a place where thousands of people reside. As far as I could determine, not one of them has any problems. Would you like to go there?’ He answered, ‘When can we leave? Sounds like my kind place!’ ‘If that’s the case, George,’ I said, ‘I’ll be happy to take you tomorrow to Woodlawn Cemetery since the only people I know who don’t have any problems are dead.’ Peale would go on to warn people: ‘If you have no problems at all you’re in grave jeopardy---you’re on the way out and you don’t know it! If you don’t believe you have any problems, I suggest that you immediately jump into your car and drive home as fast as possible, run into your house, go straight to your bedroom and slam the door. Then, on your knees pray, ‘What’s the matter, Lord? Don’t you trust me anymore? Give me some problems.’” This a simple but true story, and it certainly isn’t the way Peale and counselors through the years would help individuals and families find answers to their challenges. Each of them found great satisfaction and joy in being ‘people-helpers’. I mention this because I’ve learned this first-hand in counseling with individuals, couples and others, dealing with relationship, chemical dependency and personal dysfunction issues. Perhaps you’ve noticed our ad (page 45 in EPNews) for ‘New Horizons Family Services’, our church’s community-service ministry. If you haven’t, let me use this article to let you know that I am here to serve you, one on one, as you deal with ‘problems’ life has thrown your way. Not only do we want to serve you in that way, I will be conducting a workshop in the fall on “Helping Skills for Caring Christians” to train a team of community ‘caring’ people, to perfect their ‘listening’ and other ‘problem-solving’ skills, thus becoming effective ‘people-helpers’. Please consider being a part of that program when offered, so that we can better help people in our community deal with ‘problems’ they are struggling with. If you have questions about the counseling work or training program check our ad and give me a call. May God bless our efforts to become more effective for Him. Bob

Thank You To Volunteers Who Help With Annual Spring Clean Up

Estes Valley Recreation and Park District (EVRPD), the provider of numerous recreational opportunities in Estes Valley, wants to send out a huge thank you to all the volunteers who came out on April 28 for the Estes Park Annual Spring Cleanup. “We had more than 140 registrants on the morning of the cleanup,” said Annie Hanson, Manager of the Lake Estes Marina and co-coordinator of the event with Tara Moenning of Rotary Club of Estes Park. “And there were countless more volunteers who joined those registrants to help them clean up the roadways and waterways.” In all, more than 24 yards of trash were collected and then hauled off by Rocky Mountain Dumpsters and the Town of Estes Park, co-sponsors for the event. To put that in perspective, an 18-yard dump

truck and trailer is about 60 feet long. The event is typically the last Saturday in April, which is the weekend before the annual Rotary Duck Race. For more information about next year’s cleanup day, visit evrpd.com. Professionals Collaborate For Ballet Renaissance

Alexandre Hammoud soloist with American Ballet Theatre (NYC), Emily Speed of Colorado Ballet (Denver), and Radoslaw Kokoszka Co-Director of Ballet Renaissance (Estes Park), joined forces in collaboration for Ballet Renaissance’s upcoming May performances. The three professionals spent several hours the week of April 2, creating a new work which will debut in Ballet Renaissance’s upcoming production of Not So Ugly Duckling, May 11, 6:30 p.m. and May 12, 2 pm, in the Walter G. Ruesch Auditorium at the YMCA of the Rockies. The new work, a pas de deux, or traditional “dance of two, ” is set to Shostakovich’s Romance from The Gadfly Suite, Op. 97a, and wraps up the fairy tale as the Not So Ugly Duckling finds her parents, Kokoszka and Speed, who will perform as mother and father swan. “Ballet Renaissance's premiere of Not So Ugly Duckling is something to look for-

ward to, and something to remember, this Mother’s Day weekend. Our young aspiring dancers will have the opportunity to perform alongside adult professionals. I have also tried my hand at creating the world's first 3D printed ballet set for this upcoming production. My favorite scene in this ballet is the hunting scene where the boys and I hunt for the birds at the lake," said Kokoszka. Kokoszka of Poland and Hammoudi of France are long time colleagues, and both graduates of the prestigious School of American Ballet in New York. Hammoudi who has visited Estes several times in recent years, continues his collaborative efforts with, and support of, Ballet Renaissance with his most recent visit. Hammoudi shared, “Each time I visit Estes, I enjoy working with Ballet Renaissance. There is a spirit and energy, a sense of community, that is truly inspiring. Sweet Pets Need New, Forever Homes

Do you have room in your home and your heart for a new furry friend? Sadie is five and Olivia is three. They are well adjusted and very friendly! They know several commands and listen well. The Pet Association would like to try to get them adopted together if they can but will take applications for just one dog if they decide to separate them. They are great with other dogs and house trained. Sadie and Olivia are living at the Animal Hospital of the Rockies, 453 Pine River Ln. Call (970) Sadie 586-4703 to meet either of these cute pups. Weezie is 11 years old. She was surrendered because her family had to move. She is a healthy main coon cat, very loving and sweet. She is also at the Animal Hospital of the Rockies (Dr. C's) Shelia lost her owner and is a loving lap cat and would do great in home where she could snuggle and relax. Shelia is 13 and she is good with dogs, but will need to be an only cat. Shelia is at Olivia the Pet Lodge.

More information on any of these loving pets can be found at the Pet Lodge at the Animal Medical Center on Manford Avenue or call 586-9282. All pets are offered through the Pet Association of Estes Park, a non-profit organization that works to find homes for stray and abandoned pets, control dog and cat populations by funding sterilization programs, educate members of the community, especially young people, about the humane treatment of animals and the responsibilities of pet ownership; and promote community involvement in the use of pets as therapeutic agents (e.g., in nursing homes). The Estes Park Pet Association is your local humane society. You can make a tax-deductible donation to the Pet Association by sending your check to P.O. Box 4342, Estes Park, CO 80517. For more information, contact Carolyn Fairbanks, President of the Pet Association at (970) 586-5121.

New Store-Beef Jerky Outlet Planning Grand Opening Meat Lover’s Paradise Now Open In Downtown Estes Park Beef Jerky Outlet of Estes Park has opened for business in downtown Estes Park, located near the corner of Virginia Drive and Park Lane. The store address is 131 Virginia Drive, Estes Park, Colorado 80517. The store is currently planning their grand opening celebration. Visit this fun and unique store online at BeefJerkyOutlet.com/EstesPark and follow the store on Facebook @BJOEstesPark. This Beef Jerky Outlet specializes in more than 100 varieties of premium jerky. There are exotic meats like kangaroo, alligator, venison and elk, as well as specialty flavors such as Moonshine and Cajun. Gourmet snacks, popcorn, candy, jellies, jams, sauces, spices and rubs are also available. There are even dog treats available. There is almost literally something for everyone and you can try it before you buy it. “We’re very excited the store is finally open,” said Ryan Oldham, who owns the Estes Park Beef Jerky Outlet with his wife Kim. “Our store has such a unique shopping experience where you get to try it before you buy it.” The store is currently planning a grand opening celebration for this June. For more details about the store and updates on grand opening plans, visit the store’s Facebook page, @BJOEstesPark. History of Jerky The word jerky has its origins in the native languages of South America. In the 1800s, the term “jerky” quickly spread across the New World to describe the process of smoking, drying and curing beef. Native Americans, cowboys and pioneers made and embraced jerky as an easily transportable and long-lasting food source. Today, jerky is one of the fastest growing snacks in the snack food industry. This is in part due to an increasingly high demand for lightweight, high protein, low fat, nutrient dense foods. All About Jerky • Jerky has traditionally been the num-

ber-one favorite snack of the military, and for years, NASA has sent it into space with astronauts. • IRI, a Chicago based market research firm, reports sales of jerky jumped 46 percent from 2009 to 2015, and Americans spent $2.8 billion on beef jerky in 2015. • Jerky is in the beef snack category — the fastest growing segment of the snack food industry (Convenience Store Decisions, Nov. 2012). • Our nation’s health craze is fueling the jerky revolution as runners, weightlifters, hikers and weekend warriors eat it before, during and after exercise. • Jerky is a popular snack for folks on the Paleo diet, which urges consumers to eat the kinds of foods eaten by their hunter/gatherer ancestors. • Jerky is catching on for women too, because the cured, low-fat snack provides an energy boost without spoiling the diet. A Penn State University study found physically active women, ages 18-45, consider jerky more convenient and satisfying than tortilla chips. • Chefs are now incorporating jerky into their gourmet dishes. You can find jerky on the menus of high end restaurants in Four Seasons hotels and others throughout the country. About the Beef Jerky Outlet The Beef Jerky Outlet was founded in 2010 and is the country’s first national jerky franchise. The company is headquartered in Kodak, Tennessee and there are currently more than 100 franchise locations, including 6 founderowned stores, with 106 additional stores planned. The Beef Jerky Outlet specializes in more than 100 varieties of premium jerky including exotic meats like kangaroo, alligator, venison and elk, as well as specialty flavors such as Moonshine and Cajun. Jerky is lean, high in protein, low in calories, contains less than 3% fat and has an extremely long shelf life. Millions seek out and enjoy this very nutritious snack every day. Across the country people are literally eating it up!

Sandy Begley is uniquely qualified because of her prior experience managing successful financial programs and projects in the US and abroad with Hewlett Packard. She also has prior experience on the EPMC Board of Directors, and as interim Chief Financial Officer. Sandy joined the EPMC Board in November. Her knowledge of EPMC’s finances and her experience in management and strategic planning have made her a key member of the Board. David Batey is currently vice-Chairman of the EPMC Board. David was an epidemiologist in ExxonMobil's Global

Medicine Department for over two decades and has served on many local boards. He was appointed to the Interim EPMC Board by the County Commissioners EPMC in June, and then elected to fill a short term position in November. David has focused on improving the EPMC Board’s processes and policies, and increasing transparency to regain the community’s trust. The current Board has done an excellent job of working together to improve EPMC policies and procedures and supporting the CEO in continuous improvement of the operations and sustainability of EPMC. Your vote is essential. I urge you to vote for Sandy Begley and David Batey for the EPMC Board. Bill Pinkham, Chairman Park Hospital District Board

Thanks For A Great Fundraiser! To The Editor: Nehemiah Gateway USA would like to thank our friends in Estes Park for their help while our Board of Directors was visiting from Germany, Albania, and Chicago. The National Honor Society at Estes Park High School, led by Guidance Counselor Hannah Heckerson and student president Hanna Bergsten, put much time and effort into planning and hosting an Albania fundraiser for us. At that event, Christina Lee Wharton and the Estes Park High School ProStart classes used recipes from Albania, a country none of them had ever visited, to create delicious and authentic Albanian food, and presented it professionally and well. Rudy and Hilde Frank hosted the Board at the Sonnenhof B&B during their stay, and held a wonderful reception. Estes Park Rotary are generous supporters of Nehemiah Gateway’s work

in Albania, and members attended both events. Marcie Kiser’s 10th Grade Geography class brought empathy and open minds to a classroom talk about refugee camps in Uganda, and were excellent hosts. Estes Park has been the US home of Nehemiah Gateway, a 25-year-old international humanitarian organization whose mission is helping and empowering people to shape and determine their lives in dignity and independence, since 2015. We continue to be delighted by the warmth and generosity of our friends and neighbors here in Estes Park. Thank you very much, Doug Mann Michelle Mann Sarah Pita Nehemiah Gateway USA Ng-usa.org

“Los riesgos y bene cios de jugar y explorar al aire libre”

Junior Election Program 2018 By: Judi Smith In 1789, the United States set forth an amazing new concept: the ability of the populace to make their own decisions. Since that time, it has been the right and responsibility of individual citizens to research and consider the options, and then to vote their conscience. In an effort to educate the younger generation on how and why we vote, the League of Women Voters of Estes Park, the Estes Park School District, the Estes Valley Library, and EPNRC have provided our young residents (ages 5-17) an opportunity to voice their opinions in the Junior Election. Anyone who needs information can contact lwv.yea@gmail.com “Without referring to political parties or current issues, list six qualities, traits, or positions important in choosing a political leader.” How many of us, well seasoned, practiced voters that we are, have the answer to that question on the tip of our tongues? The 2017 election for hospital board and school board, added the first Student Forum to the Junior Election schedule. The 2018 Town elections expanded to include a Meet and Greet with all seven seated officials (prior to election) and a Junior Election Forum with all 10 candidates for trustee. Students presented thoughtful questions and obviously listened to the answers when voting. The May 8 election will include a Junior Election vote for the EVRPD Board whose members, among other things, set policy for the new Community Center. Also on the ballot for the Library Precinct are the candidates for hospital board (two candidates for two positions plus a write-in

applicant). Estes Park School District students grades 5-12 will vote at school. All other students vote at the Estes Valley Library. One of the most difficult election concepts for adults is that each special district has its own boundaries. While these boundaries exceed the Estes Park town borders, they also differ slightly from each other. Since Junior Elections are for student practice, we are not forced to differentiate. All students (regardless of where they go to school) who live as Estes Valley residents may vote in any Junior Election. During the fall election season for 2018, we plan a number of Meet and Greets for the students, with Town Board members, with various district board members and possibly with staff. There is also some possibility of Meet and Greets and/or forums with candidates for state and national positions. Any high school student wishing to help plan and host these events, please contact Judi Smith, League of Women Voters of Estes Park at lwv.yea@gmail.com By the next presidential election in 2020, today’s high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors will be voting. By the following presidential election (2024), the voters will include today’s middle school classrooms. And by the 3rd one (2028), today’s 2nd graders will be making that decision. If Abraham Lincoln was correct, when he said, “The philosophy of the schoolroom today is the philosophy of the government tomorrow,” then the results of this experiment will give us a window through which to see the future of Estes Park, and, perhaps, of the nation as a whole.

This month Rocky Mountain Conservancy’s Field Institute is offering two fascinating classes revolving around the birds of Rocky Mountain National Park. The first one is taking place May 19 titled “Life as an Owl” taught by Kevin Cook. This eight hour course helps participants acquire the knowledge and skills to find owls deliberately while discussing what attributes make a bird an owl, how to listen and look for owls, biology of owls, and the plant communities that support each owl species. The second course is taking place May 24 titled “Birds at Twilight” taught by Jeff Maugans. This four and a half hour

course focuses on the nocturnal birds of this area, such as Wilson’s snipes, owls, common nighthawks, and common poorwills. There will be the opportunity to search and listen for these birds while discussing their natural history and ecology. These courses offer the chance to learn more about some of Rocky’s elusive inhabitants. Both courses will include indoor and outdoor components, participants must be ages 16 or older to register. They are classified as mild hikes of short-distance walks throughout the course on primarily level terrain. Participants should remember to dress in warm layers with appropriate footwear. For more information about these courses or questions on other Rocky Mountain Conservancy educational adventures please call 970-586-3262. Participants can also register online at www.rmconservancy.org, advance registration is required.

Margaret Clark Margaret Clark, long time resident of Estes Park, died April 25 at Good Samaritan on her 100th birthday. She was born in Chicago, the third of five children, on April 25, 1918, to Fred and Anna Merrifield. Her father was a minister and a professor of comparative religion at University of Chicago. Her mother was an English teacher and later principal of a girls’ school. Margaret described growing up in a “wonderful academic family” and attending University of Chicago’s Lab School. It was during these years that she and her family began to visit Estes Park in the summers. Renting different cabins for several summers, the family ultimately purchased a rustic cabin on Ram’s Horn Mountain looking down on the YMCA. And thus began Margaret’s great love of the mountains and Estes Park, which would endure for the rest of her life. She attended college at the University of Chicago, where she met her future husband John Clark. A serious law student, he asked Margaret’s older brother and fellow fraternity brother to make a formal introduction at a fraternity dance. This impressed her. Although he reportedly wasn't the best dancer, she said they “talked well together.” They married a few years later, continuing to live in Hyde Park until their fourth child was on the way, when they moved out to the western suburbs of Chicago. More children followed, eight in all: Margaret, Marcia, Alice, Patricia, David Bruce, Marian, Valerie, and Philip. Throughout this period of child-raising, Margaret also maintained an active life of civic engagement. She attended the Congregational Church, participat-

ing in the church choir and oratorio society, served as a Cub Scout den mother, was active in numerous clubs, and later studied long hours by mail to earn a teaching certificate so that she could become a high school English teacher once all her children were in school. One of her enduring commitments was to League of Women Voters, which she said taught her a great deal, including being at ease with public speaking. She served the League in many capacities, including President for a time. Another constant during these years was the annual summer pilgrimage to the cabin in Estes Park. All eight children participated, according to their ability, in an ambitious hiking schedule each summer, building up to the conquest of some high peaks by the end of the vacation. On New Year’s day, 1981, when her eighth child, Philip, was a senior in high school and planning to matriculate at Colorado State University in Fort Collins in the fall, Margaret’s husband John died of a sudden heart attack. Although they had been planning their retirement to Estes Park in the summer, circumstances were now completely changed, though not Margaret’s drive to relocate to Estes. With the help of daughter Valerie, she tackled the huge job of downsizing and moving from a large turn-of-the-century historic home the following summer. Thus began her long history here in Estes on a full-time basis. Her natural response to grief and loneliness was to engage, once again, in civic life here in the Estes Valley. Over the years, she proved a leader and a doer, time and time again. She joined the Mountain View Bible Fellowship, where she served as deaconess on Church Council and sang in the choir. She was a founding member of Estes Park Medical Center Foundation, serving as Secretary and President. She was a founding member of League of Women Voters of Estes Park, serving in numerous capacities, including President. She was a charter member, Board member, and volunteer at Crossroads, again serving in many ca-

pacities including Board President. In 1999 she was named to the Estes Park Planning Commission by the Mayor of Estes Park. She contributed to and led many other organizations in the Estes Valley, including AARP, Elizabeth Guild, Women’s Club, and Estes Valley Improvement Association. She was also a member of Oratorio Society, and Rocky Mountain Conservancy. In 1991 she was fittingly named Estes Park Woman of the Year in Community Service for her many contributions. In addition to her busy schedule on numerous boards and in volunteer capacities, she found time to hike, without fail, twice a week. With the Mountaineer Snowshoe-Hiking Group, which she cofounded, or with family, she ultimately climbed all the peaks visible from the family cabin, including Mt Meeker and Terra Toma Mountain. There is quite a story told in the family about her ascent of Terra Tomah with her two sons. It was September and they got a late start due to road closures. Approaching via Forest Canyon from Trail Ridge Road through some snowy terrain, they summited Terra Tomah at 4 pm, On the return, their flashlights gave out in the depths of Forest Canyon. Carrying on, they were guided by daughter Valerie and husband Doug’s lantern high up at Forest Canyon Overlook on Trail Ridge Road. Margaret and her sons finished their hike at 12:30 am and were greeted by Doug and Valerie with a bottle of champagne. Margaret was 68 years old when she accomplished this feat of great endurance despite equally great fatigue. She also traveled extensively during these years, visiting every continent. Highlights for her were: The Great Wall of China, Iceland and Norway, the New

Zealand Milford Track, the rain forests of Costa Rica, the Himalayas of Nepal, the Grand Canyon (twice), a photo safari in East Africa, the Galapagos Islands, Scotland with daughter Marcia and son Philip, Hawaii and New Zealand with daughter Tricia, Switzerland with daughter Margaret and her husband Leo, and, unsurprisingly, numerous other mountainous destinations. What drove her throughout her world travels were her great appreciation for nature, love of beauty, and a curiosity about other cultures. Margaret is survived by daughter Margaret Matti of Estes Park, daughter Marcia Cozzi of Chicago, daughter Alice Reuman (Peter) of Estes Park, daughter Patricia Clark-McDowell (Forrest) of Eugene Oregon, son David Bruce Clark of Denver, daughter Marian Aldrich of Estes Park, daughter Valerie Deats (Doug) of Estes Park, son Philip Clark (Shari) of Berthoud, eleven grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Margaret was preceded in death by her husband John, her parents Fred and Anna Merrifield, three brothers and a sister. There will be a Celebration of Life service at Mountain View Bible Fellowship on May 6 at 2:30 p.m. The family suggests attendees wear bright colors in honor of Margaret’s legendary love of colors! In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Crossroads Ministry, Good Samaritan VillageEstes Park, or Hospice of The Estes Valley in care of Allnutt Funeral Service, 1302 Graves Avenue, Estes Park, CO 80517 (see www.allnutt.com).
