Rocky Mountain National Park Changes Entrance Fee To Address Infrastructure Needs And Improve Visitor Experience

The National Park Service (NPS) announced today that Rocky Mountain National Park will modify its entrance fees to provide additional funding for infrastructure and maintenance needs that enhance the visitor experience. Effective June 1, all of the park’s passes will increase. Rocky Mountain National Park is unique in that it offers a Day Pass. Rocky will continue to offer the Day Pass, it will increase from $20 to $25. The SevenDay Vehicle Pass will increase from $30 to $35, the Seven-Day Motorcycle Pass will increase from $25 to $30.

The park’s Annual Pass will increase from $60 to $70.

Last October, the NPS proposed a plan to adopt seasonal pricing at Rocky Mountain National Park and 16 other national parks to raise additional revenue for infrastructure and maintenance needs. The fee structure announced today addresses many concerns and ideas provided by the public on how best to address fee revenue for parks.

Revenue from entrance fees remains in the National Park Service and helps ensure a quality experience for all who visit. In Rocky Mountain National Park, 80 percent of entrance fees stay in the park and are devoted to spending that supports the visitor. The other 20 percent of entry fee income is shared with other national parks for their projects.

According to park superintendent Darla Sidles, “We appreciate all park stakeholders who engaged and commented on the proposed fee increase including elected officials, community leaders, park visitors and our neighbors.

We are committed to keeping Rocky Mountain National Park affordable and providing visitors with the best possible experience. This fee increase is still an incredible value when considering other

family and recreational experiences.

Plus, 80 percent of those funds stay right here in Rocky to benefit visitors and improve the park, such as operating the park’s visitor shuttle bus system, providing food storage lockers at campgrounds, and restoring willow and aspen habitat. The additional revenue will also help us address the park’s $84 million deferred maintenance backlog on projects such as rehabilitating numerous trails like the Onahu Trail and Cub Lake Trail, renovating restroom facilities, replacing a failing septic system at Timber Creek Campground, and mitigating beetle-killed hazard trees in or near park facilities such as picnic areas and trailheads. ” National parks have experienced record

breaking visitation, with more than 1.5 billion visitors in the last five years.

Rocky’s 2017 visitation alone was 4.4 million visitors, making it the fourth most visited national park. Throughout the country, the combination of aging infrastructure and increased visitation affects park roads, bridges, buildings, campgrounds, water systems, bathrooms, and other facilities. Maintenance deferred on these facilities amounts to $11.6 billion nationwide backlog.

Entrance fees collected by the National Park Service totaled $199.9 million in Fiscal Year 2016. The NPS estimates that once fully implemented, the new fee structure will increase annual entrance fee revenue by about $60 million.

Rocky Mountain National Park has had an entrance fee since 1939. The current fee rate has been in effect since October, 2015. The park is one of 117 in the National Park System that charges an entrance fee. The remaining 300 sites are free to enter.

The price of the annual America the Beautiful National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Annual Pass and Lifetime Senior Pass will remain $80.

Hermit Park Open Space To Close April 23-25 For Roadwork Hermit Park Open Space will be closed to the public to accommodate general roadwork and maintenance starting Monday, April 23.

All campgrounds and trails within Hermit Park will be closed.

Roadwork is expected to be completed that week, and Hermit Park should reopen to the public on Thursday, April 26.

2017 Water Quality Report Shows Town Continues To Provide Great Drinking Water The Town of Estes Park Water Division has produced the latest “Consumer Confidence Report” for water customers. The report, which is officially titled the “Annual Water Quality Report” includes information on the Town’s water source, treatment facilities, health information and sampling results from January through December 2017. The report illustrates that the Town of Estes Park continues to surpass strict federal and state standards and provide residents and visitors to the community the very best drinking water possible.

The Water Quality Report is available on the Town’s website at www.estes.org/consumerconfidencereport. The Town Water Division, which serves approximately 6,600 customers in the winter and more than 25,000 in the summer, operates with a capacity of four million gallons per day. With 14 employees, the division maintains two water treatment facilities, more than 110 miles of distribution lines and over 710 fire hydrants.

Next Drug Collection Scheduled April 28 Police encourage safe disposal of unwanted prescription and over-thecounter drugs On Saturday, April 28, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. the Estes Park Police Department will sponsor a Drug Take Back Day to collect unused, unwanted and expired prescription and overthe-counter drugs for safe disposal - no questions asked. This free service will be held at Rocky Mountain Pharmacy, located at 455 East Wonderview Ave. in Upper Stanley Village. Police officers will collect the drugs, which will remain in the custody of law enforcement officers until they can be incinerated.

Consumers and caregivers should remove expired, unwanted, or unused medicines from their home as quickly as possible to help reduce the chance that others may accidentally take or intentionally misuse the unneeded medicine. Work to include resurfacing, bike lanes and accessibility improvements The Colorado Department of Transportation will host an open house meeting on April 23 from 5:30-7 p.m. in Estes Park to discuss the resurfacing and other improvements planned for Colorado Highway 7 which begins in early May. The open house will take place at the Estes Valley Community Center, 660 Community Drive. Residents and commuters will be able to talk individually to CDOT officials and representatives from the contractor on the job, Flatiron Constructors, Inc. There are many different aspects of this $13 million project. About 12 miles of the road will be resurfaced. After the 2013 flood, CO 7 became a major route in and out of Estes Park due to closures on US 34 and US 36. Heavy trucks and increased traffic caused damage to the road. In addition to resurfacing, approximately 40 major culverts along this route will be repaired or replaced.

The work will also include widening of the road to create at least four additional feet to make it more safe for bicyclists. The new bike lanes will start at Lily Lake and connect to the existing bike lanes at St. Malo’s Chapel on the Rock.

Lastly, in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, and a commitment from CDOT to improve acces-

sibility for people with disabilities across the state, several curb ramps will be upgraded in the town of Estes Park on CO 7. Existing sidewalks will tie-in to the new curb ramps at numerous locations.

Project schedule Work will begin the first part of May and go until October 2019 with a break during the winter months.

Normal working hours will be from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday.

In special cases, these hours may be extended.

On April 6 at 8:44 p.m. a 24 year old female from Estes Park who was wanted on a warrant for a violation of a protection order, turned herself in at the Larimer County Detention Center.

On April 8 at 5:49 p.m. police were called to a disturbance in the 1700 block of Olympian Lane. Upon arrival they arrested a 54 year old male from Estes Park and charged him with third

degree assault and domestic violence against a 27 year old victim. He was transported to Larimer County Detention Center.

On April 9 at 6:21 p.m. police arrested a 58 year old male from Estes Park in the 1100 block of Big Thompson Ave. who was wanted on two warrants. The warrants were from Douglas County (failure to appear on a traffic offense) and Eagle County (failure to appear on a DUI and no proof of insurance). He was arrested and transported to Larimer County Detention Center.

Every Day Is Earth Day At Rocky Mountain National Park Come celebrate Earth Day at Rocky Mountain National Park. A special Earth Day event will be held Saturday, April 21, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Beaver Meadows Visitor Center and entrance to the park is free on Saturday. Earth Day is a chance for the world to unite around the importance of environmental service, and there is no better place to celebrate than your national park. There will be an Arts & Crafts station to create cool Earth Day artwork, and park staff and scientists will be on hand to share information on a variety of Earth Day topics! We will also be opening up the park greenhouse for tours from 10 a.m.to 2 p.m., offering a great way to see young plants springing to life. A map with directions to the greenhouse will be available at Beaver Meadows Visitor Center.

Townâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Annual Water Main Flushing May 7-18 The Town of Estes Park Water Division will conduct the annual water main flushing program from Monday, May 7 through Friday, May 18. The flushing improves water quality and clarity by creating a higher than normal flow through the distribution system. This flow helps to clear the pipes of the iron oxide buildup resulting from corrosion of older steel pipes. Water customers may notice discoloration of their water for a short period of time.

The rusty-looking water can leave iron stains in clothing and is not aesthetically-pleasing, but it is safe to use. The best solution for customers is to avoid using water, particularly hot water, when crews are flushing in the area. If rusty water is drawn, cold water should be run for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the water clears. If the water does not clear in that time, water should be shut off for about 30 minutes before the process is repeated.

Pat Washburn To Be Honored As Recipient Of The 2018 Pioneer Award The Estes Park Museum Friends & Foundation board is pleased to announce that Patricia Washburn has been chosen as recipient of the 2018 Pioneer Award.

This recognition is given annually to a community member who has made significant contributions to the celebration and preservation of the area’s history. Pat will receive this special honor as part of the Museum Friends’ annual membership meeting and reception on Thursday, May 10 from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at the Estes Park Museum.

The May 10 event is open to current members of the Museum Friends. Anyone who is not a Museum Friends member is encouraged to purchase a membership before May 4 to attend.

A longtime resident Pat Washburn and an active member of Estes Park’s civic life, Pat comes from a family with remarkable historic ties to the area. Her grandparents were Joe and Ethel Mills, who opened the Crags Hotel on July 4, 1914. Joe Mills, the younger brother of Enos, helped popularize the area with his autobiography, “A Mountain Boyhood” and through his work with the original Chamber of Commerce. Joe was active in Rotary, and in 1925 campaigned to build an auditorium to lure the organization’s international convention. Estes Park was in the running, but Cleveland won the final selection for that year’s convention In the early 1930s, a young ranger named Dorr Yeager gave a talk at the Crags, where he met the Mills’s daughter, Eleanor Ann (nicknamed “Peg”). Their 1935 marriage assured another generation of nature enthusiasts. As a ranger at “Rocky,” Dorr helped design the museum that was housed in today’s Discovery Center in Moraine Park, inside a building that was originally Imogene MacPherson’s Moraine Park Lodge. Dorr built enthusiasm for his profession and for the National Park Service through his four novels telling the adventures of their title character, the ranger “Bob Flame”.

Dorr and Eleanor Ann had moved on to other national parks when their daughter Pat was born in Berkeley, California. With her father in demand creating dioramas for parks throughout the West, Pat enjoyed summers spent in national parks like Bryce, Zion, and Grand Canyon, where Dorr served as Assistant Superintendent. During the World War II years, the parks were relatively empty of visitors, and the wilderness seemed their own private playground. When the war ended and visitors returned, Pat wondered as a young girl, “Who are all these strange people coming here? ” Pat went on to attend Reed College in Portland, Oregon for three years, then completed her undergraduate degree at Colorado College in Colorado Springs.

Despite her family’s historic ties to Estes Park, it wouldn’t be until 1970 that Pat began spending summers in the area, when she and her husband rented the residence of Dr. Charles Lory house on today’s Lory Lane. By the early 1980s, she began an extraordinary career that continues to this day: working summers for Rocky Mountain Nature Association, now the Rocky Mountain Conservancy.

That career had strong ties to her roots: it was her father who had started the Association and her grandfather who had served as its first president.

Pat earned her post-graduate degree in religious education and social ethics from the Iliff School of Theology. At the turn of the century she moved to Estes Park full-time, beginning a decade of service as pastoral associate for St. Bartholomew Episcopal Church in Estes Park. She served on the local Interfaith Council and was honored by that board in 2001 with its Martin Luther King, Jr. Award. Since 2009, Pat has served as Chaplain for the residents at the Good Samaritan Village in Estes Park.

Among her civic contributions, she helped launch Estes Park’s Restorative Justice Program in 2003. She served on the Museum Friends & Foundation board, including three years as its chair from 2009 to 2012. Today, she continues to volunteer her time as a board member for the Estes Park Salud Foundation.

Pat has given many talks and programs to help share the stories and legacy of her famous parents and grandparents. The memoirs and photos in her grandparents’ trunk helped inspire and provide the research for Dr. Jim Pickering’s 2013 book, “Joe Mills of Estes Park.” And joined by co-author Pat Pickering and illustrator Patricia Greenberg, the three Pats have created the popular children’s books “Tracks in Time,” followed by “Exploring the Park Together: a Family Guide to Rocky Mountain National Park.” This month, a grant from the Village Thrift Shop is making it possible for a copy of the book to be given to every local third and fourth grader.

The Museum Friends invite non-members to consider purchasing a membership to attend the event on May 10, which will include light food and refreshments.

Poetry matters. It connects us to others and to ourselves, and the more times we read (and better yet, recite) a favorite poem, the deeper it reaches, eventually becoming part of who we are.

Not every poem has that affect on every person, but part of what makes poetry wonderful is the way one poem speaks to me and another touches you. Poetry is personal; an art form that often requires reflection and contemplation and can help make sense of this crazy world—yet sometimes make it all the crazier (see below)!

Rarely does this happen with a oncethrough. When a poem is read and reread (or listened to again and again) it takes shape, grows a soul and becomes a friend.

On the lighter side, several readers have sent their favorite poems to be shared during National Poetry Month. The first comes from Bill U, called “In Praise of Bic Pens” by David P. Hilton (1938-2005). Here’s Bill’s teaser: “You asked for favorite poems. I thought you might like this one that I first read 40 years ago in a book I bought, a collection of new poets called, “Quickly Ageing Here. ” I wouldn’t suggest you use it in a column for 2 reasons: (a) it’s too long, & (b) it doesn’t rhyme. Still, it is as apt today as it was then, though you can’t buy a Bic stick pen for 19¢ anymore, and those wonderful commercials (firing a Bic through a board from a rifle, then John Cameron Swayze proclaiming, “. .. and it still writes! ”, Dorothy Hamill tying one to her skate blade & taking off on the ice, etc.). Nola G. submitted a perfect spring poem that reflects the discouragement/anticipation we feel this time each year, by Inez George Gridley (1908-2005) : A snowfall came on April first.

After the buds were out.

The pussy willows shook their heads, It made the crocus pout.

The bluebirds hopped from branch to branch, But never stopped their song.

They knew the snow was just a joke, And couldn't stay there long!

My uncle Bill said, “Roberta [my aunt] and I used to read poetry to each other while I was growing up. The first poem that came to mind was about a ‘Purple Cow’ by Gelett Burgess (1866-1951): ” I never saw a purple cow.

I never hope to see one.

But I can tell you anyhow I'd rather see than be one.

The poem was very popular in its day—I remember my grandmother reciting it at whim. It was often parodied by other writers. Here’s a clever take-off by one of Uncle Bill’s favorites, Ogden Nash: I've never seen an abominable snowman, I'm hoping not to see one, I'm also hoping, if I do, That it will be a wee one.

Tom Montgomery wrote his own variation: I never was a vitamin; I never hope to be one; but I can tell you anyhow;

I'd rather C than B1!

Burgess eventually wrote this sequel to his original “Purple Cow”: Ah, yes, I wrote the "Purple Cow"— I'm Sorry, now, I wrote it; But I can tell you Anyhow I'll Kill you if you Quote it!

Mooo-ving on…I was at the Big Muddy Folk Festival in Boonville, MO a couple of weeks ago and heard some terrific music.

One song that tugged on my green heartstrings was called “Use It Up” by Marideth Sisco and Robin Frederick. Included here are the lyrics as a variation on the poetry theme: Grandpa grew up near the town of Poplar Bluff so poor he couldn't even pay attention but his hands held many skills he had knowledge of the hills He’d share with anyone who’d listen. He’d say...

April “Explore Our Store” Showcases WesTees and Riverspointe Spa’s Float Pod The April “Explore Our Store” took place on Wednesday, April 11 and featured WesTees and Riverspointe Spa, with its new float pod. Representatives from the Visitor Center Ambassadors, Estes Valley Partners for Commerce, Visit Estes Park, and the Stanley Hotel enjoyed checking out each stop’s offerings and hearing presentations from the respective owners.

The group’s first visit was to WesTees, located at 234 E. Elkhorn Avenue, right across the street from Bond Park.

Owner Ben Ferguson and his son Brooks were on hand to welcome attendees and show them around the store. Ben and his wife Julie purchased the store as a t-shirt shop and have spent three years as owners of WesTees. Ben shared that the store’s location was at one point a soda foundation and a doctor’s office; he and Brooks did all of

William T. Parke (1857-1924) was a successful early Estes Park businessman and photographer. Until a few years prior to his death, he had never married, and in 1917, he and another Estes Park resident were accused of an unspeakable crime.

Except for a few short paragraphs in Larimer County papers, details are mostly hidden behind now nearly-undecipherable shorthand notations kept by a Larimer County court clerk. It is clear, though, the issue of whether Parke was guilty or innocent of improper relations divided the community, as well as the jury hearing the case. One of the accused was sent to the state penitentiary, while Parke was declared innocent and released.

What exactly happened, and why was the accuser's testimony deemed reliable in once instance, and discounted in the second? The Estes Park Archives will examine the life of William T. Parke in general, and the tragic court case that rocked Estes Park in particular, at its weekly one-hour program held at Molly B's restaurant on 200 Moraine Avenue this Saturday, April 21, at 1:00 p.m.

The Estes Valley Crisis Advocates (EVCA) have welcomed Alix LaSalle as its Interim Executive Director. The previous Executive Director, Dakota Hankin, spent the last fourteen months bringing some amazing new approaches to the agency. Dakota has decided to resign from EVCA for personal reasons, and we wish her the best in her next adventure.

Alix is a retired military officer and licensed Colorado attorney who lives in Estes Park full time with her husband,

David, and rescue puppy, Koda. Alix is excited to steward the agency and its amazing staff for this next period, and the entire EVCA team is committed to further improving and enhancing the services EVCA provides for the community, from crisis intervention, to advocacy, to crisis counseling. Quota Club Donates Life-Saving AED To Event Center

Last Tuesday, Quota Club AED Chairpersons Gail Albers and Kris Hazelton proudly donated an AED to the Estes Park Event Center.

Quota recently donated 14 AEDs to the Estes Park Police Department to equip all of their vehicles with these life-saving devices.

Having an AED at hand can save lives.

An AED is a portable, easy to use device that measures the heartbeat via sticky pads attached to the chest. The AED will deliver a shock via these pads to restart the heart of a person suffering a cardiac arrest. When cardiac arrest occurs, defibrillation is the only means of restarting the heart and preventing death.

Quotarians hope that many lives will be saved. The Estes Park Event Center hosted 195,100 people last year at 202 events and this device certainly has that potential.

Proclamation And Contest Winners For Estes Recycles Day

Bowles encouraged the students to “try their hand” at a class assignment for actual use to market the event.

Tuesday, April 10, Mayor Todd Jirsa proclaimed April 21 to be Estes Recycles Day and he announced the contest winners. Third place, and a box of salt water taffy from the Taffy Shop, went to Matt Turner. Casey Walsh received a $40 gift certificate from the Park Theater for her 2nd place prize and Grace Mechem’s winning design earned her a crisp new $100 bill from Bestway Painting. It is interesting to note that both first and second place depicted a water bottle repurposed as a vase, demonstrating reuse as a primary form of recycling.

Spring Used Book Sale May 4 & 5 Book lovers and bargain seekers are invited to enjoy the wide selection of materials at the first-ever Spring Used Book Sale being hosted by the Estes Valley Library Friends & Foundation. On May 4, the Preview Sale is open to Library Friends & Foundation members from 10 a.m. to noon. The sale will then be open to the general public that day with free admission from noon to 8 p.m.

Summer Day Camp at YMCA of the Rockies Estes Park Center is filled with crafts, songs, hiking, games, new friends, rock climbing, horseback riding, and more. The activities offer the perfect way to spend the day for campers ages three to 17.

The YMCA’s leadership team believes these activities, and the natural environmental setting, are so important for youth development that they don’t want any child to be left out. For this reason, the Estes Park Center YMCA has designed an Inclusion Program for kids who need extra support to achieve their day camp goals.

“The best part of my job is when I get to tell a parent that their child with special needs can participate in camp and have the same experiences as their siblings,” said Spencer Pedigo, Estes Park Center Youth Programs director.

Many of the inclusion counselors are college students who are studying to be special education teachers, health professionals or occupational therapists.

The ratio of campers to inclusion counselors is 1:1 and together the pair joins a group of campers the same age for the day’s activities.

One of the inclusion counselors, Austin Crowell, shared some of his best memories. One in particular involved Henry, a high school inclusion camper who was visiting Estes Park for a week. “It is always incredible to watch campers

achieve things for the first time ever,” Crowell said. “Henry was really unsure about rock climbing when we took our group to one of the local Estes Park spots.

We had been there for about two hours and he still was not feeling sure about climbing. I made sure that campers and counselors did not try to pressure him into climbing if he did not want to, but thankfully that was never the case.

My fellow counselors and I would check in with him and ask if he had changed his mind at all and he eventually decided to talk to us about possibly climbing after watching the other campers and the climbing instructors. The campers in our group, counselors, climbing instructors, and myself encouraged him and assured him of his safety. He ended up making it to the top and had a blast. He came back down with a huge smile and sense of accomplishment on his face.

Two days later that week, he went whitewater rafting with our group for his first time ever and loved it as well.”

Crowell also worked with a local camper who was entering kindergarten and working on her social skills. “She absolutely had the time of her life in the swimming pool and never wanted to get out,” he remembered. “She thought it was hilarious when I would go underwater and then come back up in a different spot. During pony rides she would ask to stop throughout the ride and pet the pony for two seconds and then continue. Throughout the ride, she would exclaim ‘Yes-haw!’ ‘Giddy Up!’ and ‘Whee!’”

When a parent signs their child up for camp, one of the inclusion counselors will contact them ahead of time to find out what kind of assistance can be provided. In the summer of 2017, the Inclusion Program had two dedicated counselors, but this summer it will have six.

“I’m very happy that this program is getting the support and resources it needs to grow three times over,” Pedigo added.

“And that I get to tell parents, ‘Yes, your child will be able to participate in day camp.’”

Duck Race Seeks Volunteers To Help On Race Day The Estes Park Duck Race needs volunteers to carry a big stick, push little ducks around, and keep people out of Fall River.

“We need about 30 to 40 people to help corral the ducks as they float down Fall River, as well as making sure people don’t fall into the river,” said Gene Oja, the new “sheriff ” of the duck race. Oja said volunteers should contact him at info@eeojadds.com as soon as possible.

On race day, Saturday, May 5th, volunteers should check in at the Big Horn Restaurant at 401 W. Elkhorn in the rear Deli Room at 12:00-12:30 p.m. where they will sign in, get a security hat and

vest, a long pole to push ducks back into the running water, and instructions on what part of Fall River they are assigned to work.

Corralling more than 5,000 ducks floating down Fall River from Nicky’s Resort to the Wheel Bar in Riverside Plaza in downtown Estes Park is a large undertaking that requires volunteer manpower.

Oja said the primary concern for security volunteers is safety. “It’s basically making sure children are kept away from the river banks and that people don’t touch the ducks,” Gene explained.

“Secondly, push ducks away from obsta-

cles, such as whirlpools, bushes, and the like. They probably will be working from about 1:15 p.m. (shortly after the ducks drop into the river at Nicky’s Resort) until about 3:30 p.m. or so.”

Volunteers must be at least 21-years old.

Oja is also issuing a special call for "sweepers" this year. Sweepers wear waders while clearing a section of the river of wayward ducks. A bit more strenuous than shoreline helping, sweepers also need a strong sense of balance.

Waders are available for those that need them. Anyone interested in being a duck patrol volunteer should sign up in advance by contacting Gene Oja at info@eeojadds.com.

IS YOURS A ‘DATING’ OR ‘MARRIED’ RELATIONSHIP? A woman was requested to meet with a court judge prior to divorce proceedings to explain why a divorce was needed. He began the interview by asking: “What are the grounds for your divorce?” She replied: “About four acres and a nice little house in the middle of the property with a stream running by.” “No,” he said, “I mean what is the foundation of this case?” “It’s made of concrete, brick and mortar,” she responded. “I mean,” he continued, “What are your relations like?” “I have an aunt and uncle living here in town, and so do my husband’s parents.” He persisted: “Do you have a real grudge?” “No,” she replied, “We have a two-car carport and have never really needed one.” “Please,” he tried again, “Is there any infidelity in your marriage?” “Yes, both my son and daughter have stereo sets. We don’t necessarily like the music, but the answer to your question is ‘yes’.”

“Ma’am, does your husband ever beat you up?” “Yes,” she responded, “About twice a week he gets up earlier than I do.” Finally, in frustration, the judge asked, “Lady, why do you want a divorce?” “Oh, I don’t want a divorce,” she replied, “I’ve never wanted a divorce. My husband does. He says he can’t communicate with me.”

We probably can’t imagine a problem like this couple had, in real life, however, it certainly reminds us of the importance of being able to communicate with significant others…especially our spouses and our children. I’m reminded of the current commercial that shows a father talking about the fact that his wife doesn’t talk nor listen to him as he’s driving, nor do his children…as all are preoccupied with their ‘devices’, but, he says, “That’s okay, at least I get a check from my insurance company every month for safe driving.” Could such a distracted situation exist at your house…at my house?

One family expert says: “Communication is at the top of the family specialists’ list because it is basic to loving relationships. It’s the energy that fuels the caring, giving, sharing and affirming. Without it we become a household of roommates who react rather than respond to one another’s needs.” In his powerful book, ‘The Triumphant Marriage’, Neil Clark Warren writes: “Think about the complexity of marriage. Two unique individuals with two million separate thoughts, feelings, goals, dreams, values, opinions, and needs, get together and form a contract with each other...‘And they will be one flesh.’ Not without a lot of straight-forward communication.” And, yet, so often it fails to happen. The owner of a restaurant noticed. He said “I can tell which couples, entering my cafe, are dating, and which are married. The dating ones talk while here.” How do we change that pattern?

One thing we can do is to develop the ‘awesome power of the listening ear.” Paul Tournier, a Swedish family specialist, tells it like it is: “In the U.S. today there is a great deal of talking but very little listening. Such ‘communication’ is simply a dialogue of the deaf.”

The second need, in each family, is to develop an ‘open spirit of sharing’. In my marriage counseling work, two of the most common complaints I hear are: “He / she doesn’t listen to me!” and “He / she doesn’t talk to me.” Small wonder, then, that ‘poor communication’ is the most commonly listed cause of divorce in our country.

I hope you and yours don’t have problems in this area of relationships. However, if it seems to be a struggle, realize that it can be improved. With a little bit of training you can do better in this area affecting your family’s unity. Let’s work on it. God bless. Bob

Call For Photographs To Be Featured In Museum Temporary Exhibit “My Estes Park: Through The Lens”

This summer, the Estes Park Museum will host a temporary photography exhibition, My Estes Park: Through the Lens, highlighting local photographers. The exhibition will open to the public on Saturday, June 2 with a member's only opening the evening of June 1 and will run through October 31, 2018 in the Historic Boyd Building located on the Museum grounds.

Submissions should interpret the exhibition theme: My Estes Park. Submissions are limited to three images per

photographer. All photographs should be at least 300 dpi for jurying purposes, and must be submitted electronically (.jpg, .png, .pdf, .tiff) to Curator of Interpretation, Mikaela Fundaun at mfundaun@estes.org no later than April 27, 2018. Photographers of all ages are encouraged to submit images. Estes Park Museum Staff will serve as the exhibit jury. Photograph submissions must be accompanied by a signed copy of the photograph submission form found here or can be picked up at the Museum. Book By Estes Park Author Recognized As Best Inspirational Book Of The Year Erik Stensland

Whispers in the Wilderness, a new book by local photographer and author Erik Stensland has been recognized as the best inspirational book of the year by the Independent Book Publishers Association at their 30th annual award ceremony last week in Austin, Texas. It received the IBPA Benjamin Franklin Award™ in the Inspirational Book category. This is regarded as one of the highest national honors for indie publishers and self-published authors.

"This year's list of IBPA Benjmain Franklin Award™ winners rest at the pinnacle of professional independent publishing. These are the best of the best," said IBPA CEO Angela Bole. "This is important because in the end it’s not just about publishing; it’s about publishing well. Whispers in the Wilderness is a hardcover book that explores the longings and feelings that are stirred by the natural world and suggests that these longings mark the trailhead of the journey to wholeness. Through short daily reflections on wilderness paired with stunning photographs from Rocky Mountain National Park, author and photographer Erik Stensland encourages us to go deeper within ourselves and discover there an overlooked path that leads to healing.

This is Erik's second book to win a Benjamin Franklin Award. In 2015 his book Wild Light: A Celebration of Rocky Mountain National Park was also a winner. He has written several other books such as, Photographing Rocky Mountain National Park, Memories of Rocky Mountain National Park, and Getting Started in Landscape Photography. Additionally, Erik produces cards, calendars and a variety of other products, although he is most known for his fine art photographic prints which he sells out of his gallery: "Images of Rocky Mountain National Park" behind Bond Park in downtown Estes Park.

Fred Beckey, the original American “Dirtbag” climber, has evoked mystery, adulation and vitriol since the 1940s. EPHS To Present “Screenagers: Growing Up In The Digital Age”

The Estes Park High School is thrilled to present Screenagers: Growing Up in the Digital Age, a documentary about the biggest parenting issue of our time.

Are you watching kids scroll through life, with their rapid-fire thumbs and a six-second attention span? Physician and filmmaker Delaney Ruston saw that happening with her own kids and began a quest to uncover how it might impact their development. As with her other two award-winning documentaries on mental health, Ruston takes a deeply personal approach as she probes into the vulnerable corners of family life, including her own, to explore struggles over social media, video games, academics and internet addiction. Through poignant, and unexpectedly funny stories, along with surprising insights from authors, psychologists, and brain scientists, Screenagers reveals how tech time impacts kids’ development and also offers solutions on how adults can em-

power their kids to best navigate the digital world to find balance.

Screenagers addresses the most pervasive parenting issue of our time head on—depicting teen struggles over social media, video games and internet addiction. The film empowers kids to best navigate the digital world and provides practical resources to help them do it.

Screenagers has been featured on PBS Newshour, Good Morning America, The Dr. Oz Show and The New York Times.

The Mountain Festival is next week!

Come to the Event Center Friday April 27th and plan a Saturday Adventure outside for the next day, April 28th.

The Mountain Festival is a dynamic opportunity for our community to teach each other what we are learning about and working towards. There is curious inquiry at this event: Can your neighbor’s fireplace ash be used to make a ceramic glaze?; How does the local Red Cross deploy to area towns in need?; How does the Ham Radio club step in when our internet goes down?; What is the High School Environmental Club doing to promote zero waste on campuses? There is also doing at this event: practice archery with the Division of Parks and Wildlife; create art out of recycled materials; get your ankle wrapped by students in the Sports Medicine Academy. You can also witness live birds, figure out if you should are a candidate for the Running Club, and watch the Elementary School Robotics team maneuver their robots. As you wander around, stop and talk to Abner Sprague, Isabella Bird, and fourth graders posing as various Colorado History Wax Museum characters. The event is free; everyone is welcome.

Sage Shumate 10th Grade Congratulations to Sage Shumate, Student of the Week for April 20, 2018.

At EPHS, Sage is President of the Sophomore Class and she is a member of the soccer team, volleyball team and Interact Club. She is also part of the Estes Park Volleyball Club team, in the Environmental Club and a member of Student Council. Sage has earned her varsity letter in soccer and she maintains a 4.11 weighted GPA. She is a straight A student and loves to participate in school activities.

Outside of school she enjoys skiing, spending time with her friends and family, reading and hiking.

Her favorite quote is “Don’t tell me the sky’s the limit when there are footprints on the moon” by Paul Brandt.

She loves this quote because it encourages her to always strive for her goals and believe in herself no matter what limitations might be put on her.

After high school Sage plans to attend a university and study law.

Loveland Watercolor Artist Deborah Jansen’s Artwork At The Art Center feels very honored to have her artwork accepted into juried na-

tional exhibitions as well as state and regional shows, receiving awards of merit and excellence. Debbie was fortunate to have studied with distinguished artists throughout her career and inspired by her painter grandmother on the banks of the Mississippi River. She is a Master Naturalist and has been an Interpretive Guide for Larimer County, served for many years as a Girl Scout and Cub Scout leader and also a Boy Scout and school volunteer. Being active in sports has kept her in shape for painting on location which can be challenging in rain, wind or snow.

After Prom Event This Saturday At Chippers Lanes Prom has been an annual event for Senior and Junior students for ages. It has also become a tradition for local Clubs, businesses and the Town of Estes Park to put on an After Prom event to give the Prom goers of Estes Park High School a safe, fun place to go once the dance is over. This year is no different.

The three Rotary Clubs of Estes Park, the Town of Estes and Chipper Lanes will be hosting “After Prom” at Chippers Lanes, 555 South St. Vrain this Saturday, April 21 beginning at 11:30 p.m. until 2:00 a.m. Prom goers and their dates are invited to attend. There will be pizza and

soda, open bowling, including shoes, poker tables and pool tables and quarters will be handed out for access to the video games.

This event is a lock-in – if the student leaves they cannot return. If they stay the entire time there are prizes that will be awarded. Senior Prize $500, Junior Prize $300. There will be additional prizes given out throughout the night.

This event is free of charge and is for the Junior and Seniors of Estes Park.

March Madness Basketball Winners

Estes Park Hub/Huddle Student Ministries held their first annual March Madness 3 on 3 basketball tournament this year. Six teams played a round robin tournament on April 2nd on the beautiful, new Community Center courts. Participating teams were the Foreigners, Team Mitch, Dawn Patrol, JCR, BreakYa- Ankles and The Winners. After fifteen games, teams Winners and JCR were both undefeated. The championship game was a battle but in the end, JCR came out on top, becoming the champions of the first annual March Madness 3 on 3 Tournament in Estes

Park.

The Hub Staff offers many thanks to the volunteer score-keepers and referees, Alex Duell, Dale Duell and Tony Salerno, who helped make this event a huge success. After the awards ceremony all participants gathered in the Chiquita Room to have pizza and watch some NCAA Championship Basketball.

John York, Director of Estes Park Hub/Huddle Student Ministries said that he hopes to make this the first of many March Madness 3 on 3 Tournaments, so watch for it next year. It will be bigger and better with your team!

What Are You Doing This Weekend?

Consider Some Proactive Steps For Wildfire Mitigation

Living in Estes Valley we choose a particular lifestyle here that has an abundance of beauty, history, active lifestyle, a sense of community and some risks that others do not have. Larimer County has received adequate snow pack at this time. However, it is all at a higher elevation near the Continental Divide. Estes and surrounding areas are at a lower elevation and we have not seen near as much moisture. There is the possibility of having some huge snowstorms (it has happened in May) still with each day that passes gives us less chance of that happening. We have already had red flag warnings this year. Therefore, we need to be aware of the risks of wildfires.

We are residents living in a Wildland Urban Interface (WUI), an area where residential homes and commercial development are intermixed with forested areas. We have a unique situation, we do not just have a forested area but we have a National Park, with large acreage, as our neighbor. It would be good for each of us to look now at what we can do to minimize the risks.

It is increasingly important to educate ourselves, to protect others and ourselves and our properties from devastating wildfires through fire protection and mitigation.

It does not take much for our forests to dry out. Due to Colorado’s arid climate and fire-dependent forests, many homeowners and landowners may be particularly vulnerable to wildfires. In addition, we will start having the afternoon thunderstorms that can have lightning strikes that cause fire. These losses can be minimized if homeowners take the time to become aware of safety measures to help protect their homes and complete some effective actions. There are a couple aspects to look at. You will want to prepare your household, property and family..

Now that spring is almost it is a good time to get started on this.

There are several easy steps homeowners can take to help protect their property, to reduce home ignition risk, and inhibit the spread of wildland fires.

Create a defensible space that is defined as at least a 30-foot buffer zone of reduced vegetation around a home to mitigate the effects of an advancing fire.

You do this by• Clearing pine needles, leaves and other debris from gutters, eaves, porches and decks.

• Screening or boxing-in areas below decks and porches with wire screening no larger than 1/8-inch mesh to keep flammable debris from accumulating.

• Not storing flammable items like wooden patio furniture under decks.

• Keeping grass and weeds cut low.

• Trimming dry grass and shrubs – if it is brown, cut it down.

• Removing all fuel within 5 ft. of your home’s foundation, deck, overhangs and out buildings, including garages and sheds. If it can catch fire, do not let it touch your house, deck or porch.

• Removing dead vegetation in the 100 ft. surrounding your home (or to your property line).

• Pruning trees so the lowest branches are 6 to 10 ft. high to reduce ladder fuels. Do not let wildfire spread to treetops.

• Move woodpiles at least 30 ft. away from your home during non-winter months.

• Do not let debris and slash linger.

Dispose of these items quickly to reduce fuel for fire.

• Landscape with native and less-flammable plants.

• Keep address signs visible. Therefore, fire service people know your location.

• Remember to prepare ahead of time for the possibility of having to evacuate, have a family disaster plan in place.

Food, Music And Festivity At 18th Annual “Cinco de Mayo”

“Cinco de Mayo” has become a popular celebration far and wide, but its unique history is not as well known. The event recalls a day in 1862 when French forces attempted to seize the small town of Puebla, Mexico. The Mexican troops, comprised of local farmers and villagers, prevailed against a much stronger invading army, and their unlikely victory inspires pride still to this day. Much like St. Patrick’s Day, “Cinco” has grown into annual tradition enjoyed by many cultures worldwide.

Here in Estes Park, this day also has a proud tradition, now entering its 18th year. Estes Park’s Annual Cinco de Mayo Celebration will take place on Friday, May 4 beginning at 5:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. This year’s location is the Pavilion building at the Estes Park Events Complex at Stanley Fairgrounds.

Since the Estes Park Duck Race happens on Saturday, this year’s community event is happening one day prior to the traditional “Cinco.” Members of the Estes Park Rotary Club are providing volunteer support at this year’s Cinco de Mayo.

Food will be served from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m., followed by a live performance later that evening by Mariachi Luna, offering the rich tradition of mariachi music.

Makerspaces are built on the idea that learning and personal enrichment happen when we take part in hands-on, interactive, and creative collaboration. As a place of community learning, the library is an ideal home for a makerspace where knowledge and whimsy unite.

Maker programs are something our community has asked for over many years, and as a result, we integrated them into our strategic planning. Last year, thanks to two generous donors to the Library Friends & Foundation, we took a big step forward. During our second floor renovations, we created a new space just right for making.

We knew this room would be useful for all kinds of activities, but with so many possibilities, how should we apply our energies? What types of programs

should we plan? What equipment, tools, and supplies should we add?

That’s where the Makerspace Survey came in. Your 220 responses gave us excellent data, and we thank everyone for their ideas, insights and suggestions.

We’ve spent some time analyzing the survey responses, and we’ve collected the results into six major themes, 33 broad areas of interest, and 71 specific subject areas.

Judy Long Here are some of our takeaways: • The three most popular major themes are Technology (35.8%), Crafts (29%), and Do-It-Yourself activities (24.6%).

• The top five areas of interest were Desktop Manufacturing, Craft Tools, Hand Tools, Sewing, and Computers.

• In the individual subject areas, Woodworking, Sewing, and Metalworking all scored high. But there was one runaway winner: 3D printing. We’ve offered several 3D printing programs over the past year, and your feedback tells us you are enthusiastic to learn more about this innovative technology!

A big thanks to the community members who completed our survey, and congratulations to Judy Long, whose name was selected at random as winner of the wood toolbox!

We look forward to studying this data even more closely in the coming weeks and using your responses to set priorities for programs and resources. We’ll keep you updated as our plans for more creativity and learning at the library take form.

The Estes Pak supplemental food program would like to thank the Mount Calvary Lutheran Women's Missionary League for an amazing donation of food.

The donated food will help feed students and families on weekends. Estes Pak helps students and families that are facing food insecurity and hunger in the Estes Park Valley. Estes Pak was started by the Estes Park Education Association.

Teachers recognized that their students needed food on the weekends. Each week the program sends home bags of

healthy food with students on Fridays.

The program is completely free of charge for families and students. Estes Pak partners with many great service and faith based organizations in Estes Park. Estes Pak also has many great volunteers to help feed our community.

EVRPD To Offer Monthly Medicare Counseling Sessions Estes Valley Recreation and Park District (EVRPD), provider of numerous recreational and community activities in the Estes Valley, is pleased to collaborate with UCHealth Aspen Club to offer free Medicare counseling. All counseling sessions are conducted by trained State Health Insurance Program Counselors from the UCHealth Aspen Club.

Counseling sessions will be held at the new Estes Valley Community Center, 660 Community Drive. The individual 45-minute appointments are offered between 9:15 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. on the fourth Wednesday of each month, January through October. Registration is now open for the April 25 and May 23

dates. These sessions are useful for those new to Medicare, those with questions or problems with coverage, or anyone needing good information on Medicare services and plans.

The Historic Stanley Home Foundation: The Rest Of The Story To The Editor: We are compelled to respond to an article by the Historic Stanley Home Foundation (HSHF) in the Estes Park TrailGazette, March 28, entitled ‘Supporters sought by Historic Stanley Home Foundation’. The HSHF has been soliciting support to “save the home of F.O. and Flora Stanley for historic preservation” without giving all of the relevant facts.

We, too, would like to see the Stanley home preserved but not as a commercial use property.

The Stanley home is currently located in a neighborhood zoned E-1 (Estate: 1 acre min). In order to “save the home”, on February 1, the homeowner submitted a Request for a Pre-Application Conference for a Rezoning Petition to have the zoning changed from E-1 to CO (Commercial Outlying) to allow it to be used as an historic home museum. This conference has taken place.

We believe this is spot-zoning in a residential area and, if approved, would result in any commercial development allowed by the code, i.e., restaurants, retail businesses, etc., on the Stanley home property on Wonderview Avenue (HWY 34), even with an historic designation in place and the surrounding lots put into a conservation easement by the HSHF. Despite the assurances of the HSHF, there is no way to limit development of a property zoned Commercial Outlying: if it’s allowed in CO zoning, it can be done!

We would challenge every reader to consider Estes Park’s recent history with property development and the ‘assurances’ of developers and investors, assurances that were not followed through on, resulting in a final project drastically changed from the initial concept. If this zoning change to CO is approved, more

than likely the property use would not be limited to a museum, the stated goal of the HSHF, because there is no way to ensure that the HSHF will always have the same goals they do today, or that they will even own the property indefinitely.

You might wonder why this impacts more than us, the folks who live next to this residence on Wonderview, and why we feel it should matter to every homeowner and renter in Estes Park. It’s very simple: this zoning change would set a precedent for the surrounding residential district and, therefore, any residential neighborhood in the Town of Estes Park.

Consider that any resident who is able to show that their home has historic significance would now have a case to argue that their home (potentially your neighbor) should be allowed to operate as a traffic-generating museum to Estes Park’s past or any business they choose once the lot is rezoned. If you were ever to disagree with the use of the lot because you believed you were promised one use to gain your support but the use has changed over time, the cost and time/effort/energy to fight that use would be yours. It’s a dangerous precedent.

By asking residents if they’re in favor of saving the Stanley house, we believe the Historic Stanley Home Foundation is purposely misleading in their omission of the pertinent facts. Perhaps most importantly, do you support spot-zoning in residential neighborhoods and the changes it would bring to Estes Park? If this is allowed to happen, spotzoning will be coming to a neighborhood near you!

Response To Housing LTE To The Editor: I would like to respond to Loretta Tryke’s letter of April 6 regarding the Wind River Apartments proposal. Ms. Tryke has several concerns that I would like to address: Ms. Tryke made the comment that “A developer from out of town doesn’t care about EP residents, nor will they maintain the property as it should be.” I don’t know about this specific developer but as one who has been in commercial real estate for my entire career, I offer that it is in a developer/owner’s best interest to maintain the property. That is how profits are maximized. I would caution against making such a definite statement about a company or person about whom you know nothing.

Our town is in desperate need of housing. If you don’t want an “out of town” developer, exactly who do you propose locally? Does someone here in town have the desire and wherewithal to make that kind of investment?

As to the location, it is my understanding that the property is already zoned as multi-family. If you want to fight to have the zoning changed please do so; otherwise, everyone should understand that is

how it will be developed. Communities develop zoning plans so that there is a strategic, coordinated vision.

Finally, I would ask where you propose to put this development if not in that location? Ms. Tryke asks “Wouldn’t it make more sense to move the apartments off the main roads, out of town further?” Where would that be? Are you aware of sufficient acreage that is zoned for multi-family that can be utilized for this development? Believe me, if it was moved somewhere else then we would hear the same complaints from whomever lives near that location.

As the saying goes: “I don’t have a dog in that hunt” with regard to this project.

I do, however, recognize the dire need for housing in this community. No one seems to want it near them (NIMBY – Not In My Back Yard). Generic comments are made about putting it somewhere else but the specifics of where that would be are never addressed. It is unrealistic to think that available land will not be utilized for its “highest and best use” as zoned.

Robert Taylor Robert Laurence Taylor passed away quietly in his home in Estes Park, CO during the early morning of Saturday, April 7, 2018. Bob was born on June 29, 1929, and spent his childhood with his family in Mississippi. After graduation from the University of Mississippi, he was called to duty with the United States Air Force and served for 18 months in Korea. On his return to the U.S.A., he enrolled in the Tulane University School of Law in New Orleans where he earned his law degree.

Known as a southern gentleman, a born fisherman, and competitive sail boat racer, he moved to Gulfport, MS practicing law with his partner, Ernest Martin. He spent most weekends on the beautiful coastal waters of the MS Sound, including Alabama, Florida and

New Orleans. He also served a term as Commodore of the Gulfport Yacht Club.

He was preceded in death by his parents Laurence Avery Taylor and Robbie Hudson Taylor and his first wife Beverly Glass Taylor. In 1972 he married Marcia Musgrave and they enjoyed summers at the family cabin near Estes Park, CO where he was introduced to the Rocky Mountains. Following Hurricane Katrina in August of 2005, which destroyed their home on the MS Gulf coast, they decided to become full-time residents of Estes Park, CO. Margaret Brown Former Estes Park resident, Margaret Brown, died at Porter Hospice on Thursday, April 12, 2018. She was 91 years old. Margaret Nicholson was born August 31, 1926 in Ray, AZ. Her parents were Hugh and Evelyn (Kuhn) Nicholson. She received a Bachelor’s degree from (School) in (Subject). On August 15, 1948 she married Ronald Brown in Urbana, IL. The couple moved several times for Ron’s job at Shell Oil Company, living in various parts of the United States, Canada and Saudi Arabia. After Ron’s retirement in 1988 they moved to Littleton, CO and

were summer residents of Estes Park. In 2007 they moved to Highlands Ranch. Ron died August 13, 2013. Margaret is survived by her sons Paul and Gary of Highlands Ranch seven grandchildren, five great grandchildren and a brother Harold Nicholson of Carrollton, TX. Margaret and Ron also had a daughter, Barbara Brown who has been missing since visiting Australia in 1978. A graveside service was held Wednesday April 18, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. at Estes Valley Memorial Gardens in Estes Park.

Stanley Dale Cass Stan Cass, 84, passed away peacefully after a brief illness, surrounded by his immediate family, on April 14, 2018, in Greeley, Colorado. He was born in Greeley on July 29, 1933 to Bill and Thelma Cass, living in Briggsdale.

Colonel Stanley D. Cass was a retired career Army officer and operated Cass Farms in Briggsdale with his son, Randy, and his family. He was a proud veteran, the President and Founder of Honor Flight Northern Colorado. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and a good friend, while also committed to helping others in his community.

He attended Colorado A&M (CSU) for two years before going to West Point in New York and received a Masters of Science in Meteorology from Texas A&M. He retired from active duty in 1986 with 29+ years of service.

He was a life member of the VFW; a member of the American Legion; and is past President of the Northern Colorado Military Officers Association.

As a co-chairman of the Weld County Veterans Memorial Committee, he played a significant role in getting a Veterans Memorial built in Greeley, dedicated in 1997 that has become a standard for other cities/towns.

In 2008, he founded the Honor Flight of Northern Colorado (HFNC) that has so far enabled almost 3,000 WWII, Korea, Vietnam and any Purple Heart Veterans from any conflict who apply to see their Memorials in Washington, D.C. This is a non-profit organization that has received funding purely from donations. To date HFNC has raised approximately $3 million dollars.

HFNC takes two trips each year with

123 Veterans and 63 guardians; and the May 6-7 2018 trip will be the 20th flight.

Stan was a past Mayor of Ault and was very active with the Community Foundation, Legacy Land Trust, Colorado State University Beef Club and the West Greeley Conservation District. He was an active Mason and Shriner, Occident Lodge #20 member, AF&AM, and was Past Master three times. He was president of Colorado Tillage Association and was president of Ault Sertoma Club, as well as District Governor of a three state area. He was also recently awarded the 9 News Who Care Award and the Valued Veteran of the Year by Moose Lodge #909.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Cecily; children, Randy Cass and wife Judy of Briggsdale, Muri Cass Kersanac and husband Tim of Destin, Florida, Sarah (Cass) Gostenik and husband Adam of Greeley, and Corry (Cass) Eagler and husband James of Greencastle, PA. Grandchildren include Justin Cass, Jared Cass, Joseph Kersanac, Tyler Kersanac, Madeline Eagler, Abigail Eagler, and Harper Gostenik.

He was proceeded in death by his parents and brother, Tim. Visitation was held on Tuesday, April 17th, 2018 at Allnutt, (702 13th St. Greeley) and his funeral service was held on Wednesday, April 18, 2018 at the Eaton Evangelical Free Church (1325 3rd St., Eaton) followed by internment at Sunset Memorial Gardens on 28th St. in Greeley, and a reception at Moose Lodge in Evans.

Inge Niedringhaus Inge Niedringhaus, 91, died at Columbine West in Fort Collins, CO on Monday April 9, 2018.

Ingeborg Bauer was born November 1, 1926 in St. Johann, Austria. Her parents were Theodor and Paulina (Pilshofer) Bauer.

On July 6, 1947, she married Kurt Niedringhaus in St. Johann. They lived in Iowa, Kurt’s home state, and then Nebraska, prior to moving to Estes Park in 1978. In 2014, Inge and Kurt moved to Fort Collins. Inge is survived by Kurt, and 6 children; Rob Niedringhaus (Linda), Will Niedringhaus (Melanie) Paul Niedringhaus (Christin), Maggie Cook (Bill), Monica Reed (Jeff) and Kris Ford (Joel). She is also survived by 15 grandchildren / step grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Margit Eisner.

A Funeral Mass will celebrate Inge’s life on Monday April 23, 2018 at 9:30 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Fort Collins. Burial will take place on Tuesday, April 24 at 10:30 a.m. at Estes Valley Memorial Gardens in Estes Park.

Inge was a much-loved Wife, Mother, Grandmother, and Great-Grandmother with a circle of close friends. She was raised by her parents along with an older sister in an apartment above a bakery in the center of the small alpine village of Sankt Johann. She enjoyed her studies and achieved good marks.

In addition to diligent school work, she studied music and became an accomplished pianist.

She lived through the dark days of the Anschluss on March 12, 1938, when Nazi Germany annexed Austria changing her daily life. She saw her family fractured and the beginning of a seven year period of struggle and deprivation until World War II in Europe ended in May of 1945. Despite the difficult circumstances, Inge managed to complete her education at the Mozarteum University of Salzburg (originally known as the Paris Lodron University of Salzburg). She went to work as a secretary at the office of the U. S. Army, Central Intelligence Corp in Salzburg.

There she met Staff Sergeant Kurt Niedringhaus and a romance blossomed.

They were married on July 6, 1947 in the Pongauer Dom Catholic Church in St. Johann. Since Inge’s family were strict Catholics, a special dispensation was sought from the Pope to allow her marriage to a Lutheran. The provisions of the dispensation included a requirement that any children be raised Catholic, which Inge subsequently ensured was the case. Inge and Kurt honey-mooned on the Jaegersee in Austria and lived happily in St. Johann. In 1948 they sailed to the United States arriving at Ellis Island, and then moving to northern Iowa, where they lived with Kurt’s parents in Sheffield.

They began a family with the addition of Maggie in 1949 and Rob in 1950. When Kurt’s job took them to Davenport, Iowa, Inge furthered her musical education, graduating from the Sherwood Music School. She delivered a third child with the arrival of Will in 1954. When the family moved to Des Moines, she began giving piano lessons in their home. Her love of classical music extended to her children, who were expected to learn to play the piano or another musical instrument.

Inge devoted herself to her children and husband, and the family grew with the addition of Monica in 1959, Kris in 1961, and Paul in 1963. She loved children and her role was instrumental in shaping six children to also love kids, work hard, be determined in what they undertook, and frugal with what they earned.

When Kurt retired, Inge and he moved to Estes Park in 1978. She found a new home town that reminded her of her original home town, nestled in a valley and surrounded by mountains. After many years of referring to Austria as “home”, she found a new place to call home. She was active in the parish of Our Lady of the Mountains, and prayed for those enduring hard times. She enjoyed her circle of friends and was always fond of the animals, which roamed the hillside around their home. Her devotion to family was constant and she was always the first to hold and cuddle a new arrival of one of her 15 grandchildren / step-grandchildren or 25 great-grandchildren.

She will be missed by many.
