Voters Should Have Received Ballots For April 3 Municipal Election The Town of Estes Park will hold the next regular Municipal Election Tuesday, April 3, 2018 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. as a mail ballot-only election. Ballots were mailed to all registered voters March 12. Town Clerk Jackie Williamson encouraged voters to contact her office if they have not yet received their ballot. She explained, “Voters should definitely have their ballots in hand, and for anyone who doesn’t, we need to issue a replacement ballot.� Replacement ballots are available by visiting the Town Clerk’s office, Room 130 of Town Hall, 170 MacGregor Ave. In addition, absentee ballots can be requested through March 30.

Voters may cast ballots now through 7 p.m. April 3 at the Town Clerk’s office.

The Larimer County offices on Brodie Avenue are not accepting ballots for the Town of Estes Park Municipal Election.

All ballots must be received by 7 p.m.

April 3, when the polls close, in order to be counted – postmarks do not count.

On March 22, 2018, Estes Park police officers arrested a 59 year old Estes Park male in the 1700 block of Raven Avenue. He was charged with four counts of Sexual Exploitation of a Child (Class 4 Felony). The suspect was transferred to the Larimer County Jail.

The arrest follows a lengthy investigation performed by the Estes Park Police Department in conjunction with the Colorado Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force.

The charges are merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

The District Attorney for the Eighth Judicial District of Colorado has assumed responsibility for the case. No

On March 18 at 12:48 a.m. police contacted the driver of a vehicle in the 400 block of N. St. Vrain and charged the 30 year old male from Fort Lupton, CO with stopping a vehicle in the roadway where prohibited, DUI, DUI per se and driving under restraint. He was transported to Larimer County Detention Center.

On March 20 at 5:25 p.m. police arrested a 39 year old male from Estes Park who was wanted on a warrant and charged him with a felony out of Adam’s County for first degree motor vehicle theft. He was arrested and transported to Larimer County Detention Center.

The April 3 election will determine three Trustee seats on the Board of Trustees. Voters will determine who will occupy seats currently held by Mayor Pro Tem Wendy Koenig and Trustees Bob Holcomb and Ward Nelson. Mayor Pro Tem Koenig is term-limited, and Trustees Holcomb and Nelson are each running for an additional four-year term. Candidates for Trustee as they appear on the ballot are Dave Shirk, Bob Holcomb, Marie Cenac, Barbara MacAlpine, Ken Zornes, Art Messal, Ward Nelson, J. Scott Webermeier, Carlie Speedlin Bangs and Michelle Hiland.

Youth Ask Challenging Questions Of Trustee Candidates On March 21 Estes Park youth let their voices be heard at a candidate forum designed just for them. All ten candidates for Estes Park Town Board of Trustees participated in what may have been their most challenging forum, as only youth were allowed to ask questions.

The Junior Election committee of the Estes Valley League of Women Voters, EPHS Civics Dept., Estes Park Nonprofit Resource Center (EPNRC), and youth program of the Estes Valley Library collaborated on the planning and hosting of the forum.

Moderator, Marsha Weaver, EPHS Civics teacher, asked questions on such topics as childcare, housing, road conditions, thoughts on marijuana dispensaries and bike riding safety. Issues of transportation and activities for young people were brought to the candidates outlining what many young Estes Park citizens consider: whether or not to continue living in Estes Park after graduation.

Candidates responded to the question around a compelling current issue, “What would you do to make sure our schools are safe?” Although candidates represent different ideas on this issue, a resounding message was that the youth must have a voice and speak out.

Through programs like Junior Election, EPHS Civics Dept., and Youth In Action (YIA), youth of the Estes Valley will continue to have opportunities to voice their opinion, ask intriguing questions, and provide the youth perspective.

All youth are invited to vote for Town Trustees in the Junior Election on April 3. Youth in grades 5-12 will vote at school, while all other youth may vote until 7 p.m. at the Estes Valley Library.

Historic Stanley Home Foundation’s First 500 List Is Growing Quickly The Historic Stanley Home Foundation is securing the permission of hundreds of citizens of Estes Park, to be on a list that publicly acknowledges their view that the mission to save the home of F.O. and Flora Stanley for historic preservation is very important.

Listed below are the first 252 who when asked for permission, were enthusiastic about being heard to show that sentiment to save the iconic home for the benefit of future generations will be positive for both local citizens and visitors alike.

Once important historic sites are lost, there is no turning back. The establishment of the Foundation and the achievement of its goals will insure that the home of the Stanleys, who did so much for our town, will forever be a valued historic resource in our town.

As we push on to meeting our goal of

EVFPD firefighters generally respond to medical calls in their personal vehicles, allowing for a faster response. On other incidents, firefighters respond to a fire station to respond in department apparatus with specialized equipment.

Next Estes Park Archives Program This Saturday, March 31 The first commercial airplane landed in Estes Park in August 1919, delivering newspapers from Denver. Coincidentally, that same month, a group of four pilots and support crew from Ellington Air Base in Houston, Texas were touring the western United States in de Havilland biplanes on a recruiting trip for the Army. Pilots from both groups claim they were the first to fly over the Continental Divide, yet only one group provided photographic evidence, published in a news magazine the following year.

from up and down Colorado's front range recently turned up at an Illinois estate sale. What do they represent, and who really deserves credit for being the first pilot to fly over Longs Peak?

With only five weeks before thousands of little yellow plastic ducks hit the water, the Estes Park Rotary Duck Race operations center, Duck Central, will open to the public on Friday, March 30 in a new location with expanded hours. Volunteers will be on hand to assist the 68 charities and groups that are selling adoption forms, to handle walk-in sales, and answer duck-related questions, such as: what are my chances of winning? Free Open House, Program And Star Night At EP Observatory

"Is the world around you a computer simulation?" An exploration of information, artificial intelligence, and the thoughts of Elon Musk and Nick Bostrom.

The Estes Valley Astronomical Society (EVAS) in conjunction with The Estes Park Memorial Observatory is offering a free public open house/star night this Saturday, March 31, 7 p.m. Note, this is a change from our normal 4th Saturday lecture to accommodate a speaker conflict.

The goal of EVAS is to promote amateur astronomy and education in the Estes valley.

Our guest speaker for this public star night will be our own volunteer John Ensworth.

With recent and rapid progress in photorealistic, 3D simulations (e. g. video games like the Climb, the Sims, or Arma 3, not to mention virtual reality (VR) systems), Elon Musk has repeatedly maintained that the ability for humans to realistically simulate reality is not far off.

Assuming that everything in the physical world can be simulated, Musk posits that humans might decide to simulate themselves, once they realize the immutable limits of human and scientific progress (randomness).

There are three possibilities of human existence according to Nick Bostrom, philosopher, futurist, and author of the seminal paper Are You Living in a Computer Simulation: 1) humans go extinct before they develop this technology; 2) (post-) humans choose not to run many simulations for some reason; 3) or we are already living in a simulation that might be part of earlier simulations creating further simulations approaching infinity.

Even if we do not live in a simulation (making this reality the prime reality), the universe may ‘accidently’ work like a simulation based on information itself. The advent of artificial intelligence or simu-

lated humans (“Sims”) may force the world to enter a simulated reality in the near future.

John Ensworth is currently the Principal Investigator of the NASA SMD Independent Education Product Review at the IGES, which is a non-profit organization formed, in part, to conduct independent reviews on all Earth and space science education products produced by or created for NASA (www.strategies.org). His position is the one responsible for conducting these reviews and helping with NASA education and outreach efforts through the Web (video.strategies.org) and at large education conferences (i. e. NSTA, NCTM, and the ASP) that introduce the products that are scientifically accurate and appropriate for the educational audience they are intended for. In the 90s Mr. Ensworth was a masters’ student and a PhD candidate in meteorology at the University of Oklahoma. He earned undergraduate degrees in physics and astronomy, and geography and meteorology with an emphasis in math and computer science.

The observatory is just north of the high school at 1600 Manford Ave. Park in the teacher’s parking lot between the high school and the observatory. The doors will open at 7:00 p.m. and the presentation will start at 7:30 p.m. Weather permitting after the presentation, visitors will be invited to look through our large telescope at various celestial objects.

1917 Book Club Program Wednesday, April 18 On Wednesday, April 18, 2018, the 1917 Book Club returns to the Estes Park Museum to explore local title The Magnificent Mountain Women: Adventures in the Colorado Rockies

The program runs from 10 a.m.11:30 a.m. and is held in the Museum Meeting Room. Light snacks will be provided. This program is free and registration is required, limited to 50 participants. It is strongly encouraged that participants read the book prior to the program to take part in the discussion.

The April selection, The Magnificent Mountain Women, "presents for the first time the stories of some three dozen women who from the 1850s to the 1980s ventured into the mountains not as wives or daughters but as women pursuing their own aims, often with hair-raising success." I’m not out of the woods yet—or out from under a mountain of boxes in this case. You see, I’ve been spending weeks reducing the amount of possessions in my midst. In order to do that I’ve had to brave a closet full of boxes that have remained untouched for several years. I’ve pulled the boxes out into the room, opened each one, consider every item inside and then put said item in this pile or that: give away, throw away, donate, send to someone, keep and use or keep to revisit later or keep and put back in the box.

Times often get worse before they get better and decluttering is the perfect example. I have created a dreadful mess in every room but mostly in the second bedroom, which does have a floor despite the fact that you can’t see it if you dare peek in. (WARNING: Do not go in there. You’ll never find your way out!)

Some of the memorabilia I am unboxing I forgot I ever had. That should mean I could let them go without pause. But once I hold that special ______ (fill in the blank), the memories trigger and I struggle to part with the item. It could be a souvenir from a foreign land, a children’s book, champagne flute, leather bracelet with my name stamped into it, or a poster I made when I ran for student council in high school.

Gradually I have come to realize it’s the memory I want to hang onto, not the item. (I’m a slow learner.) I’ve done as the downsizing experts advise: take a picture and then get rid of the item. That worked for the Barbie tracing table (circa 1970) but not for the ceramic elephant bowl my grandmother painted (circa 1965). The bowl is precious to me, which means someone else will have to deal with it when I leave this planet because I’m not letting it go.

(My mother, an expert at reducing, once said, “If it gives you warm fuzzies, keep it.”

Trouble is, I can get warm fuzzies from a paperclip.)

The important discovery I’ve made through this extraction exercise is that my most treasured keepsakes look a lot like

my life: chipped and broken and put back together again through resilience and with a tender hand.

My Winnie the Pooh coin bank has been glued back together more than once. The round plaster disk imprinted with my infant foot and painted gold has been broken and is now back to one solid plate with a web of glued-together cracks. Each of the few pieces left of my dainty children’s tea set has been damaged and reset.

I can feel my mother kiss away the tears from my young cheeks and see her squeeze glue with loving care into each cranny of these gems. An unblemished teacup displayed on a shelf isn’t half as beautiful as my oft-played-with one with its missing handle and maze of glue tracks.

It has been rewarding to spend time with my mementos. I have thought about where they came from, how I ended up with them, what was going on with my family and in the world at that time, and what they mean to me today.

Now it is time to say goodbye and let them go. I need to make room for the new—new adventures, new friends, and new open space to breathe. I’m not getting rid of everything, but I’m on my way to freeing myself from so much. I am rediscovering my foundational self, a phrase borrowed from Franciscan friar Richard Rohr.

On one of my multiple trips to deliver a carload of donations to the thrift store, I met a pastor who told me he is with a church called Navah. He said the Hebrew word means, “Bring home; make beautiful.” I have contributed and will continue to give boxes full of things for others to bring home and as a result, I’m making my space more beautiful.

Navah. A new word—that doesn’t take up any space.

Estes Park Cycling Coalition April 4 Meeting Invited Speaker, Director of the Buffalo Bicycle Classic Bicycle enthusiasts; you are invited!

The Estes Park Cycling Coalition will be holding its next meeting on April 4 at 7 p.m. at the Twin Owls Steakhouse. Our invited speaker is Paul Beale, Director of the “Buffalo Bicycle Classic” who will be providing an inside look at this very popular bicycling event. The Buffalo Bicycle Classic has raised over three million dollars since 2003 for student Scholarships at CU Boulder and will be coming through Estes Park this summer.

Please join us for some socializing with like-minded bicycling fans and learn more about the status of projects we are working on. We will be discussing the

status of the Stanley Park Bike Park and where we stand on our fundraising campaign. We will also be discussing planning efforts for Bike to Work Day and the Bike Parade for this summer.

The Estes Park Cycling Coalition is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization whose Mission is to promote and increase cycling of all kinds in the Estes Valley, through advocacy, education, partnerships and community building. Now in its third year, the Coalition strives to cultivate a biking culture in the community and make the Estes area a destination for cyclists.

“Babies With Altitude” Program Continues For 2018 Families for Estes partnered with the Estes Park Medical Group in February of 2014 to work on a project designed to provide a heartfelt welcome to families having their babies at our local hospital.

While it is true that having a new baby is a precious time in a family's life, it can also be a stressful and overwhelming time. We wondered what we, as a community, could do to lessen these anxieties and support these families. Families for Estes asked for contributions from several Estes Park non-profit organizations and businesses that would together create a fully stocked baby bag that was given to the parents after the birth of

their child. The goal of this project is for each family choosing to give birth at EPMC to receive a bag. This year EPMC projected 90 babies will be born in the coming year, so that is what we packed!

These baby bags included items such as: swaddle blankets, onesies, lap tees, newborn educational resources, mini taggie blankets, children's books, infant toothbrushes, a two month gym membership, maternity massage coupon and information on community resources for young families. Families for Estes would like to extend their deepest gratitude to all of the organizations and individuals that contributed to the baby bags in 2018. Thank you for valuing young families and for enriching the experience of adding a new little one to the community. 2nd Annual Book Drive At Macdonald Book Shop For EP Learning Place In the past year, the Estes Park Learning Place has distributed more than 1,500 children’s and young adult books to families in Estes Park. A community book shelf, purchased by the Learning Place with a grant from Families for Estes, has become a well-known source of enjoyment as children and their parents select books while they are at Bella Fortuna.

Donated books have come from a variety of sources - Colorado Business Reads (EPLP received books collected through United Way of Larimer County), Macdonald Book Shop sponsored activities throughout the year, a Families for Estes grant, personal contributions of books, and donations for the purchase of books.

Upcoming Handgun Classes The Basics of Pistol Shooting Courses will be offered April 7, May 5 and again on June 2. This one-day course is open to the general public and no previous firearms experience is required. The course includes both classroom and live-fire training with an emphasis on firearm safety, handgun knowledge, and marksmanship.

Students will shoot both revolvers and semi-automatic handguns. Textbook, course materials, handguns, targets, ammunition and range fees are all included.

If you are considering buying a handgun, wait until after you take this course. This class exceeds the minimum state requirements to apply for a Colorado Concealed Handgun Permit. Usual class make-up includes students with no firearms experience, students with significant experience and 40-60% women, including many couples. Tuition is $140.00 for general public and $125.00 for Estes Park Gun & Archery Club members, due on the day of class.

The Personal Protection in the Home Course will be offered on May 19. Emphasis will be on proactively making your home less attractive to potential intruders and insuring that you and your family remain safe if an intruder does enter your

home. This course includes a presentation on relevant Colorado laws. Students must have had some formal basic handgun training in recent years. You must own and provide your own handgun and be proficient with it. Additional equipment is required as well as 150 rounds of factory ammunition. Tuition for this 8-hour class is $150 for general public, $135 for Estes Park Gun and Archery Club members.

The above course will be taught by a nationally certified Advanced Pistol Instructor. All courses will be taught at the Estes Park Gun and Archery Club Indoor Range, located at Community Drive and Highway 36, next to the dog park. Each class is limited to eight students and advanced registration is required. Senior Services Offerings From EVRPD

Estes Valley Recreation and Park District (EVRPD), provider of numerous recreational and community activities in the Estes Valley, is pleased to offer a robust schedule of programs, classes and outings for Estes Valley seniors.

Here are a few of the featured programs. For a complete listing of activities, including registration information, visit evrpd.com/seniorservices.

Get Into Your Creative Space EVRPD is pleased to offer a metal embossing workshop at the new Estes Valley Community Center. The class will take place on Tuesday, April 3 from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. The cost is $45 and most materials are included.

In this basic metal embossing class, students will learn to outline and emboss a Rocky Mountain columbine flower and turn it into a beautiful greeting card souvenir. Students will learn the use of eight basic tools and four embossing techniques. Two cards may be completed in class, and most supplies and tools will be provided.

The class will be taught by Libby Rehm, an Estes Park local whose formal education includes a bachelor’s degree in Fine Art from Colorado State University.

Libby has taught metal embossing and bookmaking classes with the Colorado Calligrapher’s Guild and Trinidad State Junior College, as well as private classes.

In addition to her expertise in metal embossing, Libby is a juried photographer and mixed-media artist. Samples of her artwork can be found on her Facebook page (Elegant Elk Studios), website (www.libbyrehm.com), and Etsy shop (www.etsy.com/people/libbyrehm).

Health and Wellness EVRPD is excited to offer full-body senior fitness classes at two levels. Both classes are offered at the Estes Valley Community Center, 660 Community Drive.

“Get Fit” meets weekly on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:30 to 11:20 a.m. This level 1 class is designed to gently help seniors stay mobile and moving, whether standing or seated in a chair. It is ideal for individuals with limited mobility or those who have mobility but want to improve strength, range of motion, and balance.

A wide variety of exercise equipment will be available and utilized including stretch bands, therapy balls, and light hand weights.

“Stay Fit” meets weekly on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. This level 2 class is designed for active seniors who want to increase muscular strength, range of movement, and balance. Hand-held weights, elastic tubing with handles, or balls are offered for resistance. Both standing and seated movements and exercises will be used in this no-impact class. The exercise room will be set to meet the needs of folks who are able to move freely without balance support as well as those needing a bit of balance support (in the form of a chair).

Both classes are included with daily admission or community center annual membership.

GOD’S PROFILE OF A PERFECT PERSON At this time of year most in our nation are cognizant of and many supportive of the focus on God’s Man on the cross. Last Sunday many churches called attention to the ‘passion’ of the Christ and, next Sunday, will draw attention to the wondrous resurrection of God’s Son. Although this seasonal focus was not practiced until 325 AD, with Christians earlier celebrating His death and resurrection each Sunday, “On the first day of the week the disciples gathered together to ‘break bread” (participate in the Lord’s Supper), and many still do, every focus on our Lord’s sacrifice and His wonderful resurrection is good. We share Paul’s elation: “Christ is preached, and for that I rejoice.”

However, what a good time to remind ourselves of those characteristics of Christ, God’s perfect Son and Man, so evident in the words Jesus uttered from the cross. I believe these are characteristics that each of us, and certainly those who claim to be His disciples, should imitate.

Paul urged, “Christ left us an example that we should follow in His steps.” So, what are those sayings and what do they show us about living?

His first statement, “Father, forgive them for they know not what they do!” sets the tone for our lives. We should have that same forgiving spirit. Are we quick to ‘let go’ of things that have been said ‘to’ or ‘of’ us, or things that have been done to us? As Christ prayed for and forgave His tormentors, so should we be ready to do the same.

Christ’s next statement, “Today, you will be with me in paradise”, directed to the penitent thief on the cross, should mirror a spirit that we share in our daily life…the desire for all men to come to know Christ and be able to anticipate a ‘pleasant eternity’ with God and Christ in heaven. “This is a day of good news and we aren’t telling anyone” was said by a recipient of good things in the Old Testament, and it is certainly true of many who know Christ and are being blessed by their relationship with Him. Be ready and anxious to tell others the ‘Good News.’

Thirdly, Jesus showed a loving concern for family, as He directed His disciple John to take good care of Jesus’ earthly mother, Mary. “Behold, your mother!” Would that all people were just as concerned about providing for all their family members!

His fourth word, His cry of anguish, “My God, My God, why have you forsaken Me?” is one, the degree of horror of which we will never know, because we’ve never enjoyed the level of relationship He had with His Father, nor known the horror of carrying the burden of every atrocious deed and sin that has ever been committed, on our shoulders. But He came “to pay a debt He did not owe”…and that horrible cry shows how painful that was! What does it encourage in us? We need to understand how horrible sin, any sin, of word, or deed, or thought, is in God’s eyes and know that such will separate us from fellowship with Him. So, when you see it in your life, deal with it!

His fifth word, His ‘I thirst’, reminds us of the human aspect of His life. “He was in all points tempted…tested…like we are, yet without sin.” He knows exactly how we feel.

His sixth saying, His cry of triumph, “It is finished!” shows us the victory that has resulted from all His work and sacrifice. “He died, once for all.” And now, all who honor and obey Him can enjoy being a part of His triumph, and share His eternal victory.

His last word is the word of peace. “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” I hope that all of us as our lives ebb away and we enter eternity can speak those words.

What about our lives? Do we show the characteristics of God’s ‘perfect person’?

Estes Valley Recreation And Park District & Rotary Club Announce Date For Annual Spring Clean Up

Estes Valley Recreation and Park District (EVRPD), the provider of numerous recreational opportunities in Estes Valley, along with their partners Rotary Club of Estes Park, the Town of Estes Park, Rocky Mountain Dumpsters, and Starbucks, announced today the date for this year’s annual Estes Park Spring Cleanup.

On Saturday, April 28, 2018, from 9 to 11 a.m., join your community members and volunteers as they work to tidy up around Estes Park.

“The intent of this program is to clean our waterways and roadways in Estes Valley,” said Annie Hanson, Manager of the Lake Estes Marina and cocoordinator of the event, along with Tara Moenning of Rotary Club of Estes Park. “We will welcome spring by tidying up our neighborhoods and downtown to create a safer environment and beautify our community for the residents and visitors to Estes Valley.”

Estes Park takes a beating from the winter winds, resulting in trash–inadvertently or not–littered throughout the town. And the lack of snow this past winter means the trash that did get stuck in bushes and around buildings stayed ugly and visible.

Now that the winds have tampered down a bit, it is time to pick up your cleanup supplies and lend a helping hand for the community.

“The Estes Park Woman’s Club worked for beautification of the town for many years,” said Moenning.

“At some point they were joined by the Rotary Club of Estes Park in a ‘Clean-up Day.’ The Rotary Club eventually took over this event and would clean up the roadways in preparation for the Duck Race, held on the first Saturday in May, while EVRPD would clean up the river ways and lakes in mid-May. Several years ago, at Ron Kuhn’s suggestion, Rotary and the Rec District teamed up to accomplish both events together on the same day.’’

Groups and volunteers are asked to meet at 9 a.m. at the Estes Park Visitor Center located at 500 Big Thompson Avenue (across from McDonald’s) for in-

structions, directions and distribution of cleanup bags. Starbucks will provide coffee at the beginning of the event and donut holes will be available to snack on throughout the morning.

We recommend that you wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants, sun protection and adequate footwear, and bring hand sanitizer, gloves and water. Rain gear may also be necessary as this event happens rain or shine.

“We need volunteers to help with this program that are interested in helping to promote the Estes Park area and the environment,” said Ms. Hanson. “It is a great opportunity to support your local community and make a difference locally for Earth Day.” To register yourself or your group or if you need additional information, contact Annie Hanson at 970-586-2011 or annie@evrpd.com.

Community Invited To Celebrate Children At Be Ready Fair April 7 Each April, Estes Park joins communities across the country in celebrating The Month of the Young Child as a way to honor children and to recognize families, early childhood educators, and others who are working together to support the healthy development and early learning of every young child. According to the Harvard Center for the Developing Child: “The future of any society depends on its ability to foster the health and well-being of the next generation. Stated simply: today’s children will become tomorrow’s citizens, workers, and parents.”

The Town Board of Trustees and the School Board will both issue official Proclamations recognizing April as the Month of the Young Child in Estes Park.

It truly takes a village to raise a child! What are we doing as a community to support the healthy development of our children? Actually quite a lot! EVICS continues to work diligently to help families find care, and increase childcare capacity and quality. The EVICS Parents as Teachers Program strives to equip parents with new skills and connect families to resources. In 2017 the Economic Development Corp (EDC) took the lead in conducting the town’s first professional Childcare Needs Assessment. The Town’s Family Advisory Board has identified “childcare” as their top focus area for 2018, and the Town Board now calls out “childcare” in the 2018 Strategic Plan. Perhaps most exciting, thanks to voters and the hard work of EVRPD our long-awaited Community Center is now a reality, offering recreational opportunities for all ages, including an engaging, safe environment for little ones while parents use the facility.

Families, children and community members are invited to celebrate by attending the BE READY FAIR on April 7,

9 a.m. – Noon at Estes Park Elementary School. The free event, sponsored by EVICS, Estes Park schools, and the Estes Valley Public Library highlights the fact the school readiness begins at birth.

Ninety-percent of brain development occurs in the first five years of life, which means it is never too early to start helping children prepare for school success. At the BE READY FAIR, families will find a vast array of community resources, information on early learning programs and services, and lively activities for children. Each child under 6 will receive a Be Ready Backpack and free book. Don’t miss out on the fun, and be sure to invite your friends.

Community investments in children are truly happening! However, as the recent Childcare Needs Assessment results point out, we have work to do! We seriously lack adequate infant and toddler childcare space, and families need more options for preschool age care. Childcare services are expensive for families, and costly for providers. More programs and support are needed to meet the needs of our increasingly diverse population. Many of our working families find it difficult to live in Estes Park without support. But thankfully, we now have recommendations, stepping stones, and viable models from other communities that might work here! Stay tuned for opportunities to share your voice, your experience, and your ideas, as we all work together to be the village our children need.

"The Ladies Wore Black" is the fourth production, written by local talent Michael Young, which centers around New York Detective Steven Best, expertly portrayed by actor Don Stewart.

As Detective Best travels from the 1930s through the 1940s, he has had more than one encounter with murder, deceit and love. In this latest adventure, Best is forced to bring in several of the women he has loved from his past to help solve the murder of the man lying in his bathtub. Ridgeline Hotel Estes Park Adds “Green Meeting” Option To Conference Services

The Ridgeline Hotel Estes Park, the 147-room rustically modern hotel near Rocky Mountain National Park, today announced a new “Green Meetings” initiative to give groups the option of making their meetings and conferences more environmentally conscious.

The Green Meetings initiative will have several components. Groups that choose to participate will be provided sustainable food and beverage options, including reusable, compostable or recyclable serviceware, reusable glassware for refreshment stations and straws being provided only when asked for.

In addition, all food waste will be composted in The Ridgeline’s onsite food digester. Groups will be encouraged to use the hotel’s audio-visual equipment rather than printing paper copies of presentations, and a waste station will be set up to assist guests in sorting recyclable and compostable materials.

For groups that stay overnight at the hotel, guests can participate in The Ridgeline’s popular housekeeping “optout” program, which was recently featured in The New York Times. Guests who choose to opt out of housekeeping services receive a free drink at the hotel’s onsite restaurant, Latitude 105 Alehouse.

Rooms at The Ridgeline also feature environmentally friendly amenities such as bulk soap, shampoo and conditioner.

To further enhance environmental sustainability, The Ridgeline will assist groups in securing carpool shuttles to minimize the impact of traveling to and from the airport, and can also advise on local and sustainable food options.

The Ridgeline Hotel Estes Park is owned and operated by global hospitality company Delaware North. In cooperation with its proprietary stewardship platform, GreenPath, Delaware North leadership piloted the Green Meetings program last month at an 80-person conference held at The Ridgeline. Guests achieved a 90 percent diversion rate, making the conference a Zero Waste event (as defined by the U. S. Zero Waste Building Council).

The Ridgeline Hotel Estes Park features more than 20,000 square feet of versatile indoor and outdoor conference, meeting and banquet space that can accommodate up to 1,000 guests and is attached to The Estes Park Conference Center. Special Screening Of “Good Night And Good Luck” On April 10 “Good Night and Good Luck,” the acclaimed 2005 film based on a pivotal moment in the career of journalist Edward R. Murrow, will be presented in a special one-night screening at the Reel Mountain Theater in Stanley Village on Tuesday, April 10 at 7:00 p.m. The event is held in partnership with the Estes Valley Library as the finale to this season’s News Literacy series of programs. Movie-goers who present their library card will receive free admission to the event.

The movie takes viewers back to the year 1953, when a piece of talking furniture called “TV” was still a novelty in America’s living rooms. David Strathairn portrays Murrow, the principled “face of television” who is preparing for a clash of titans as he faces Senator Joseph McCarthy. Amid the heightened fear of McCarthy’s attacks on supposed Communists, a nation witnessed the drama in a battle for truth that would become one of the most riveting moments in American history.

“Good Night and Good Luck” earned six Academy Award nominations in 2005. The film’s title refers to Murrow’s

famous sign-offs when concluding his earlier radio broadcasts in Great Britain, meaning people would be unsure if they would meet one another again.

“A River Runs Through It” is rated PG. The library wishes to thank Craig Conley and the staff of Reel Mountain Theater for making this special film night possible.

“Fire In Ecosystems: Friend Or Foe” Class By Rocky Mountain Conservancy

Rocky Mountain Conservancy’s Field Institute Program is offering a new course in Rocky Mountain National Park called “Fire in Ecosystems: Friend or Foe” on April 14th. This full day course allows participants to explore the role of fire in mountain forest ecosystems, typical fire regimes, synergistic disturbances, and predicted changes with climate warming. Additionally, participants will discuss the history of fire policy ranging from the 10 a.m. policy to the let burn policy, with the caveat of the wildland-urban interface. Dr. Scott Franklin is the instructor for this captivating course. Dr. Franklin received his PhD from Southern Illinois University and studies disturbance and vegetation dynamics. He has published over 60 peer-reviewed manuscripts, several book chapters, and co-authored one book on forest dendrology.

This course will include both indoor and outdoor components, participants must be ages 16 or older to register. It is classified as a mild hike of several miles on mostly level terrain. Participants should remember to dress in warm layers with appropriate footwear.

Eagle Rock School Produces Colorado Premiere Of The Musical â&#x20AC;&#x153;Allegianceâ&#x20AC;?

The Colorado premiere of the musical Allegiance will be staged early next month in Estes Park by students at Eagle Rock School, with a talk-back session with cast members on the docket for one of the three performances.

Allegiance, which was inspired by the personal experiences of noted actor George Takei (who currently stars in the Los Angeles premier of the musical), is the story of the Kimura family, whose lives were upended â&#x20AC;&#x201D; along with those of 120,000 other Japanese-Americans, all of whom were forced to leave their homes following the events of Pearl Harbor that preceded World War II. Allegiance-The Colorado performance constitutes Eagle Rock Schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 2018 Spring Musical, and in preparation, students attended numerous local theater performances, visited with Japanese American internment survivors, attended history lectures and toured a traveling Smithsonian exhibit called â&#x20AC;&#x153;I Want the Wide American Earth,â&#x20AC;? and participated in a rigorous 10week Eagle Rock School class aimed at supporting students in the development of their acting and production support skills.

Allegiance will be shown at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, April 5 through 7, at the Ruesch Auditorium at the YMCA of the Rockies in Estes Park. With music and lyrics by Jay Kuo and a book by Marc Acito, Kuo and Lorenzo Thione, the musical focuses on the Kimuras, a family forced to leave their home in Salinas, Calif., and relocate to Heart Mountain Camp in Wyoming.

Sam Kimura seeks to prove his patriotism by fighting for his country in the war, but his sister, Kei, fiercely protests the governmentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s treatment of her people. An uplifting testament to the power of the human spirit, Allegiance follows the Kimuras as they fight between duty and defiance, custom and change, family bonds and forbidden loves.

Student participation in this premier production included learning the musical content of the play, as well as the history and significance that encompasses the story. Eagle Rock School students also analyzed the historical content in an

attempt to relate to these Japanese survivors.

As part of the 10-week class referenced above, all of the students participating in the production completed a character analysis to better understand a favorite character, investigating that character and asking why they made the choices they made. They created a backstory for the character, giving them an emotional arc, and they mapped out with whom that character had a relationship and why.

The students also talked with local Asian American and Pacific Islander organizations to learn more about the history and stories of Asian Americans and

Pacific Islanders in the United States.

They visited University of Northern Colorado to see the traveling â&#x20AC;&#x153;I Want the Wide American Earthâ&#x20AC;? Smithsonian exhibit and met with local community members about the production. The students also talked and worked with internment survivors and participated in a presentation and discussion with them. And, in order to enhance their understanding of theater productions, the students viewed three productions, including one at the high school level, a college production and a professional staged performance at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts complex.

Following the April 6 showing of Allegiance, students will host a talk back with the audience. And on Saturday, April 7, they will host an awards ceremony and reception with refreshments to follow.

One objective is to assist young people in accessing the resources they need for college readiness and career planning.

We want to set our young people up for success by giving them, and their parents, the tools they need to make informed decisions and feel confident.

As someone with a long career in college administration, that is why it’s been particularly fulfilling to work with local youth as they explore their options for college. I enjoy working with them, both one-on-one and in workshops offered several times each year.

If you’re a young person exploring a pathway to college, or you know someone who is, all are encouraged to register for our next session: “Creating a Path to College Readiness” on Wednesday, April 4 at Estes Park High School. On behalf of the library, I’ll be joined by High School Counselor Hannah Heckerson.

April Is “Taste And See” Month When we're faced with a food we've never eaten before, what do most of us do? We taste it first and then, if we like it, we dig in.

"Taste and See how good Bible Study can be!" is the theme for visitor's month at Community Bible Study of Estes Park.

"The idea that people like to sample something before they commit to it is nothing new," says Robbi Telfer, Teaching Director of the CBS Evening Class. It's been around since the Psalms were written.

Just read Psalms 34.8 - 'Taste and see that the Lord is good. Oh, the joys of those who take refuge in Him.'" Beginning April 2nd, CBS invites everyone to come and sample what a really good bible study is like.

“Just like there are many restaurants in Estes Park, there are many studies. CBS offers a nondenominational study for all ages where the focus is the study of Scripture alone, says Katie Soliday, Teaching Director of the Day Class.

There are two classes in Estes Park – the Day Class and the Evening Class.

The CBS Evening Class meets every Monday evening from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church, 950 N. St. Vrain Ave. in Estes Park. It has three discussion groups for women, one for men, and

day morning from 9:15 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. at Mountain View Bible Fellowship, Highway 7 at Peak View Dr. It has discussion groups for women of all ages and classes for children (babies through 6th grade). For legal and space limitation reasons, we cannot accept children as visitors during April, but moms are encouraged to visit and then register their children for classes in the fall.

Classes will close when we reach capacity, but we will have room for children registered by May 1. ” "We're studying Romans next year," says Telfer. "I personally find it an immensely comforting book. People sometimes think it's all about 'head knowledge' and doctrine, but it's bedrock, the solid foundation of our faith. Paul has dug through his own doubts and struggles and discovered solid truth to stand on. And he is eager to share that with these people in Rome that he has never met."

Telfer says the apostle Paul went through some really tough times which CBS is now studying in Corinthians.

"Paul has discovered the Lord is more than able to bring him through those tough times. And he's writing from

Corinth as he waits for the sailing season to come so he can to travel to Jerusalem.

He recognizes more difficulties await him there. The future is not necessarily bright for Paul, but he sees a glorious future in the light of Jesus, and he pours out that hope in his letter to the Romans.

Sustaining faith - that's what we find in Romans. I'm eager to dig into it and we hope many people will join us."

The month of April is a great time to taste and see if CBS is what you're looking for in a study of God's word. As we often tell others when faced with a new food, "You don't know whether you'll like it – unless you try it."

Thanks To League Of Women Voters To the Editor: Thanks to the League of Women Voters of Estes Park for organizing and hosting two outstanding forums for the ten candidates seeking a seat on the Estes Park Town Board of Trustees. The forum on March 8th at Town Hall drew a near standing room only audience. Questions from the League and the audience were relevant, thoughtful and tested the candidate’s knowledge on many important issues facing our community.

Endorsement Of Trustee Ward Nelson Dear Editor: As local business owners, my wife and I feel compelled to write concerning our upcoming Municipal Election on April 3, 2018, for seats on the Estes Park Board of Trustees, and to give our endorsement of Trustee Ward Nelson for his election to another term as a Trustee.

Elect MacAlpine, Shirk, and Bangs Dear Editor, I can not vote in the town election.

However I and others in the valley have been deeply affected by the current Town Board's attitude to and enabling short term rentals and high density development of rural land even when the County Commissioners have voted against it. We need a change in the Board to reflect caution in the rental and development areas and to consider green options. Part of the workforce housing problem arises because short term rentals have overtaken the rental market and a person finds longer terms not

available. Then the town discusses dense development of workforce housing in rural open space areas. And the Town by backing short term rentals so aggressively has brought noise and chaos to some areas where residents have paid a high price for mountain serenity.

My thought is that Barbara MacAlpine, David Shirk, and Carlie Bangs might give us a breath of fresh air on these issues.

Come and contribute your confidential reports and materials at the Estes Park Rotary Club Shred-a-Thon on Saturday, April 21st, a part of the Estes Recycles Day event.

You can drop off your un-shredded paper items between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., or until the truck is full. Just drive to the Presbyterian Community Church of the Rockies, 1700 Brodie Ave. “Community shred days are part of our commitment to the prevention of identity theft and our support for recycling, “said Tara Moenning, event coordinator. “Using this day to get rid of paper for shredding saves you a trip to the valley, where you will likely pay 99 cents/pound to shred and recycle-that’s $10 for 10 lbs. Let Rotary protect you by taking your material, while your donation goes to student scholarships.”

Paint Recycling At Estes Recycles Day April 21

Last September, we used a grant from Youth in Action to sponsor a poster design contest for Estes Recycles Day. For the April 21 event at Presbyterian Community Church of the Rockies. Estes Recycles Day, we have decided to repeat this adventure. Fifteen entries were received and the winner will be announced on April 10. For this year’s prizes: third prize is a box of salt water taffy from The Taffy Shop. For second prize, the Historic Park Theater has offered a $40 gift certificate, good for four movie tickets or two concert tickets and first prize, $100 cash, was donated by Bestway Painting.

Staffed by trained personnel, the Bestway Painting Paint Recycling Station will accept architectural paint and paint products, such as stain, varnish, shellac, deck and concrete sealers, deck cleaner, spackle and drywall mud, paint thinner, turpentine and mineral spirits. The disposal of these products in landfill, transfer station, or curbside bins is illegal and has been since 2015. And many of the substances, while no longer of value to the original owner, can still be recovered for a useful purpose.

This is a paint recycling program, not a hazardous waste collection. No pesticides, gasoline, kerosene, motor oil, roofing or paving materials, household cleaning supplies, industrial or twocomponent coatings or artist supplies are included in this event. Everyone is welcome, business, household, or non-profit entity. All stations open at 9 a.m. and each remains active until the recycling trucks are full (or the Freecycle garage sale is empty) or until 1 p.m. whichever comes first.

The LWV Annual Recycling Program held last week, was very informative. We learned about new recycling opportunities under consideration here in the Estes Valley. We experienced a brief insight into what other mountain towns do to promote efficient materials recovery. And we also got a “sneak-peek” into possible developments and new infrastructure for the Larimer County Solid Waste campuses in Fort Collins and Wellington.

The next LWVEP event is the April 12 Forum for candidates (Hospital Board and for Estes Valley Recreation and Parks Department Board) in the May election. Jon Michael Sypher 1/15/1942 – 3/25/2018 Jon lived life to the fullest and when he no longer could, he let life go. He was the definition of entrepreneur – starting four different businesses after a successful career in domestic and international sales.

All who knew him would agree that he was one of a kind with a one of a kind quick-witted sense of humor but, most of all; he was loving, caring and kindhearted. He truly never met a stranger.

Once settling in Estes Park, he finally had time to give back – on the boards of Partners, PaCK (Parents and Community for Kids), Habitat for Humanity, FOSH, Friends of the Estes Park Museum and an active member of the Rotary Club of Estes Park. Once diagnosed, it was Jon’s mission to spread the knowledge of bipolar disease and to help anyone he could who also had the disease. Jon is survived by his wife of close to 50 years, Marsha and three of his four sisters and many, many friends.

A private celebration is being planned at a later date. Donations can be made to any local charity that benefits local youth or EPMCF with an earmark for

Eleanor Whipple Eleanor Whipple, resident at Good Samaritan Village in Estes Park, died Wednesday March 21, 2018 at the Estes Park Medical Center.

She was 101 years old.

Eleanor Whipple was born June 7, 1916 in Bellingham, WA. Her parents were Charles and Blanche (Campbell) Whipple. She graduated from the University of Washington at Seattle in 1938 with a Degree in Sociology, and in 1949 with a Masters’ Degree in Social Work. In 1983 she received a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from the University of Santa Barbara, CA. In 1994, she was awarded an Honorary Doctorate for Doctor of Humane Letters.

Eleanor Founded and was the CEO of Trinity College in Vista, CA. She began her career in social work as a field instructor, later becoming a Therapist, Counselor, Executive Director on her path to Presidency. She published several articles in professional papers and was a member of several professional

She also enjoyed Art, Painting and Camping.

She was a Girl Scout Leader and one of the first female Eagle Scouts. She is survived by her son, Larry Fowler and his wife Li of Switzerland, her nieces and a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother and one daughter.
