NMFC CHANGES

In July 2025, The National Motor Freight Traffic Association (NMFTA) rolled out changes to its freight classification system:

» Expanded the list of commodities classified by density » Added two new classes to all Full-Scale density-based items for LTL freight » Required some shippers to calculate the density of their shipments (dimensions and weight) to determine class

Steps To Follow When Calculating The Density Of Your Shipment The NMFTA’s expanded density-based freight classification requires some shippers to calculate shipment density in pounds per cubic feet. To do this, follow these steps:

» Weigh your shipment in pounds » Measure the length, width, and height in inches » Multiply length, width, and height to calculate the total number of cubic inches » Divide the cubic inches by 1,728 (the number of cubic inches in one cubic foot) to get total number of cubic feet

» Divide the weight in pounds by total cubic feet For example:

» Multiply length by width by height: 25” X 24” X 23” = 13,800 cubic inches o

Convert cubic inches to cubic feet: Divide 13,800 by 1,728 = 7.98 cubic feet

» Divide the shipment’s weight by the number of cubic feet: 90 pounds ÷ 7.98 cubic feet = 11.27 pounds per cubic foot
