Quarry ST. MARGARETHEN
OPERA IN THE QUARRY 2026 TOSCA
by Giacomo Puccini
15 July to 22 August 2026
A story about love, jealousy, violence and intrigue meets breathtaking sounds: In 2026, Giacomo Puccini‘s melodrama Tosca, one of the most popular operas in the world, returns to the St. Margarethen quarry, Europe’s most beautiful open-air stage.
Rome around 1800. The singer Floria Tosca and the painter Mario Cavaradossi fall madly in love with each other, but the unscrupulous police chief Scarpia targets the couple‘s happiness and does everything he can to manipulate Tosca in order to win her over. When Cavaradossi offers refuge to the wanted political prisoner Angelotti, Scarpia plays on his
power and forces Tosca to make a choice: Either she swears her eternal love to him or he will make sure that Cavaradossi‘s life is ended. Will Tosca and her lover be able to conquer the shadows of fate?
Giacomo Puccini provides a musical rollercoaster – from Tosca‘s poignant “Vissi d‘arte” to Cavaradossi‘s powerful “Recondita armonia” and Scarpia‘s somber aria “Ha più forte sapore”. Experience fireworks of emotions and gripping melodies that find the perfect echo in the rocky landscape of the St. Margarethen quarry.
