imon Harmer has made a seamless transition into the English domestic cricket scene. Despite having made five Test appearances for his country, the off-spinner believed his future in the game lay elsewhere and in 2017, the 30-year-old South African decided to join Essex on a Kolpak deal. In a short time, he quickly become a favourite with the Chelmsford crowd as his rich haul of wickets, including his 72 victims in his inaugural season, helped the county lift the Championship title for the first time in 25 years. Now, he has taken over the captaincy of the Eagles for the Vitality Blast campaign and Simon shares his thoughts on the new role. It’s a new challenge for you, what are your reflections on that appointment? The Club felt that they needed a change of direction and hopefully I can try to do my best to get us through and

realise our focus, which is to reach Finals Day. It’s an exciting challenge and I think there’s going to be a lot of expectation as we haven’t performed to the levels we know we’re capable of. Although, it’s a challenge that I wanted and I’m really looking forward to leading the team in the right direction. I think there is a lot that we have accomplished in red ball cricket. The focus now is to try and transfer some of that success into the T20 competition and perform to the levels we know we can perform at in front of the great support we receive each game. You’ve taken over the role from Ryan ten Doeschate, what your thoughts on the change? Over the last few years, I think Tendo has been one of our best performing cricketers, but there has been a lot of weight on his shoulders with the responsibility of the captaincy. There have been situations where maybe he could have bowled more or

batted higher up the order but being the selfless person that he is, he only did what he thought was in the best interests of the team. Now I think it is the perfect time for him to step up and get the opportunities he deserves. I would really like to see him do well, that would give me a lot of satisfaction because I know he always wants to do well for the team and put in his own performances. I can see a lot of opportunity for him to realise that in T20. Tendo has done an unbelievable job as Captain. If you look at the position Essex were in 5 years ago compared to now, a lot of that is down to him and the decisions he has made at the Club. To be a successful T20 Captain, is it best to be pro-active or re-active? There is definitely a bit of both, there has to be a balance between having a game plan of what you want to achieve, whilst being aware that it is a war and it doesn’t always go according to plan. At times, you must prepare for the worst and hope for...

the best, being ready for instant decisions. My emphasis is going to be on the way that we train, making sure that we are ready for situations when we come into the park so that it isnâ€™t unfamiliar when we do get into a challenging territory. T20 is about being able to execute your skills, slower balls and game-changing moments. My biggest focus is going to be on making sure weâ€™re doing the right things off the field, training hard and taking care of the little things in cricket, and ultimately, the rest of it should take care of itself. The Eagles have an attractive squad this year, which sees Cameron Delport in the Clubâ€™s yellow shirt for the first time? I feel you can always strengthen your batting and I think he is going to add an x-factor to our batting. He is a left-hander which adds a different dimension and he has done extremely well around the world, playing in many of the T20 Leagues. Cameron also has an extra dimension in the field because he is a good, athletic fielder, and brings the added skills to bowl a little bit too so I think he will be a really useful player for the Eagles. We are really looking forward to him getting amongst us and becoming part of the Essex family

ead Coach Anthony McGrath took time out from Vitality Blast preparations to offer his insight into the Eagles prospects for a successful Twenty 20 campaign in 2019. “Compared to last season, I think we just need to be more consistent with our performances,” he reflected. “If I’m honest, I don’t think we ever put in the perfect game with bat and ball; it was either one or the other but never together. So that needs to be addressed and if we can bring those elements of our game together, that will bring confidence into our white ball cricket and we can take momentum from that. “The signing of Cameron Delport should certainly help the batting. We have brought him in to be that destructive batter with a high strike-rate and that is something we missed last year. “Also, I think having Mohammed Amir for much of the competition will give us that strike bowler that we

need and so both will be more than good additions to the team. “Confidence I think is the key word if you want to go far in this competition and it helps you win those tight games. In T20, if someone has a good four or five overs, that can take the game away from you. It’s winning those tight moments that get you over the line and generate the belief, like we have done in red ball cricket, to bring the belief that we can win from any situation. I believe sometimes in white ball cricket in the past when things go against us, we haven’t been able to wrestle the mantle back. “Every team in the country wants to win every competition but that is difficult. We have been really disappointed with our T20 cricket in the last couple of years but everyone in our dressing room is gunning to put it right this year. We can’t go out and financially make a big marquee signing and blow everyone else out of the water; that’s the reality but we are not complaining about that. We have just got to be

better within our own team and I do believe the quality is there. If you look through our side, we have nearly one thousand T20 games between us, so the experience and quality is here. We just need to get a winning run of form going. “The South Group is going to be very tough and any team has the potential to reach Finals Day. We have got a tough start with Middlesex and Surrey as our first two games before a little break ahead of the real busy part of the season. Every game will be tough. You only have to look at the teams that are in our section and see that they all have standout players in this format of the game. But then I am sure other teams look at the side we have with some envy. All we can do is to concentrate on ourselves and our own skills and not become too focused on the opposition. “I’m looking forward to working with Simon Harmer after he was appointed as the new Captain. This decision was made to look ahead to the future and the

simple reason that at some stage in the future Ryan (ten Doeschate) will be retiring. â€œSimon is delighted to have the chance to lead the side, he has got his own ideas, he is a passionate guy and I am sure he will introduce a few new things. It also means that Ryan can just concentrate on his batting and be the destructive one-day batsman we have seen at Essex for so long. â€œI know all the lads will be right behind Simon, they are really looking forward to the T20 competition and are desperately keen to put on a good show and ultimately carry us through to Finals Dayâ€?

PREVIEW The Vitality Blast is back and thereâ€™s guaranteed fireworks and plenty of thrills for a format of the game that has had a staggering impact since its inception in 2003. The Eagles have yet to make it to the Final although have reached Finals Day on four occasions in 2006, 2008, 2010 and 2013. With new additions to the T20 team, hopes remain high of heading to Edgbaston in September. Newly appointed T20 captain, Simon Harmer will hope that he can take the Eagles to new heights, especially with three influential incoming recruits in Cameron Delport, Adam Zampa and Mohammad Amir. Delport is a big-hitting South African, who is a new face for Eagles fans. He will link up with two players fresh from World Cup duties in Zampa and Amir. Australian International spinner, Zampa returns to Chelmsford to tantalise the opposition with his high-class leg breaks, while Pakistan paceman Amir will be looking to have opposition batsmen rocking and reeling against his super speed. With plenty of powerful batters and an array of varied choices in the attack should ensure that the squad prove a competitive force. Aaron Finch (seen on the right) is back for another season in Surreyâ€™s colours and will be the driving force with the bat to launch the innings. What are their chances? Surrey have endured a torrid first half of the season, having struggled to record victories in all competitions this season. Despite the presence of brutal powerhouse batsman, Aaron Finch for the last three seasons, Surrey have yet to reach the Finals with the Aussie. He amassed 589 runs in the competition last summer and will lead from the front once again off the back of his World Cup competition with Australia. There has been all too much inconstancy in the T20 performances as far as the Surrey faithful are concerned but the times could be changing. There is host of talent young and old at the Club to forge belief that a T20 title is on the horizon. nce again, they will be led by Australian Michael Klinger (pictured right) who will have a side with plenty of powerful batting and economical bowlers. They have reached the quarter-finals twice in the last three years and will be pressing to go further this time around. Any side with Klinger at the top of the order commands the greatest respect as the Eagles know to their cost. He has already posted two centuries and an unbeaten 95 in T20 matches between the two sides. What are their chances? Gloucestershire have a potentially strong batting line up with personnel heavy strikers such as Ryan Higgins and Jack Taylor to support Klinger. They also have one of the most underrated Twenty20 bowlers on the circuit in Benny Howell and if they can add an incisive bowler into the mix to support those strengths, then they could be serious contenders. Last year, they won 8 of their 14 matches to finish the qualifying campaign with just two points fewer than table-toppers Somerset. Do not be surprised if they go one better and reach Finals Day for the first time since 2007. Where they finished last year: Quarter-finalists. They have failed to escape the South Group on two occasions since 2016 and last season finished just one place off the foot of the Group, winning just two matches. However, the winter saw the appointment of the experienced Adrian Birrell as Head Coach to overhaul the squad. They have made a number of astute winter signings, along with the addition of South African all-rounder Chris Morris (left) who has signed for the campaign. What are their chances? The presence of Morris, a dynamic middleorder batsman, who is also a highly effective death bowler, can only help Hampshireâ€™s prospects of rediscovering their form in this format. With Rilee Rossouw to bring firepower to the batting, Hampshire could prove a formidable force with the bat. However, their overall prospects of reaching Finals Day could be dependent on whether England callups deny them the services of James Vince and Liam Dawson, both integral members of the Hampshire line-up. They had topped the South Group winning 10 matches and with a side packed with specialist T20 players, they will be confident of once again making it to Edgbaston. On their compact ground in Taunton, the batters go hard from the start and have plenty of players to execute their plan effectively in James Hildreth, Lewis Gregory and Roelof van der Merwe. Jerome Taylor returns to play his part in their desired success whilst their second overseas slot has been taken by top-rated Pakistan batsman Babar Azam (left). What are their chances?

A newer kid on the block is former England Under-19 captain, Tom Banton. Playing against the Eagles last year in his first Somerset T20 appearance, he demonstrated his prowess with a wonderful scoop for six over fine leg off the final ball of the first over. Now with Azam added to an already potent batting line-up, the prospects for success are undeniable. They go into the competition as one of the favourite, especially after winning the Royal London One-Day Cup earlier in the season. T20 World Cup winner Taylor took 22 wickets in 11 matches at an average of just 16.64, whilst Jamie Overton led their tally with 24. Allrounder Lewis Gregory also made a telling impact with 328 runs and 18 wickets and has been an integral player so far this season.

espite playing to sell-out crowds at home, Middlesex are underachievers in T20 cricket. However, things might be about to change. Under new Head Coach in former Essex batsman Stuart Law, and having signed South Africa legend AB de Villiers, the mood at Lordâ€™s is positive. De Villiers is pure box office and is a proven matchwinner in his own right.

Middlesex have also secured the services of another Overseas talent Mujeeb Ur Rahman who became the youngest player to take a ODI five-wicket haul, when making his Afghanistan debut aged just 16. With new personnel in the ranks, they could be serious contenders as they boast several short-form specialists including the likes of Eoin Morgan and Dawid Malan. to add to the new recruits. Middlesex will be looking for a change in fortunes after managing just two wins in their 14 Group matches last year.

olin Ingram (seen left) is a threat to any side and the Eagles know this only too well. The South African scored two centuries in successive T20 visits to Chelmsford. In 2016 he struck 101 from 56 balls, followed by 114 from 55 balls in 2017. He came close to the feat last year when he took 89 off the Essex attack, facing just 47 ball in front of the Welsh fans in Cardiff. The dynamic batsman can destroy any attack with ease and will again be the prized wicket for the Essex bowling attack. What are their chances? They have some talented and dangerous players in T20 cricket and there is no reason why they cannot progress out of the Group stages. The bowling attack has useful performers in Timm van der Gugten, Craig Meschede plus evergreen and canny all-rounder Graham Wagg, but a lack of consistency let them down last year. Glamorgan did reach Finals Day two seasons ago and they possess the ingredients for a repeat performance particularly with the influential Ingram, one of the finest white-ball batsmen in the world. Effective opener Daniel Bell-Drummond is just one of a number of proven campaigners for the solidlooking Spitfires who boast a line-up capable of beating the best in this format. What are their chances? Under their engaging coach Matt Walker and bowling coach Allan Donald, the Spitfires have an excellent chance to shine. This is especially true if Joe Denly is free from England duties to form a dangerous double-act with Bell-Drummond at the top of the order. Denly was named Vitality Blast Player of the Year at the conclusion of last term, after scoring 409 runs and claiming 20 wickets.

he Sharks will be aiming high once again after making it all the way to the Final last year, only to be beaten by the Worcestershire Rapids. Jason Gillespie’s team will most certainly be in amongst the mix for success, in this year’s competition. Commanding batsman and skipper Luke Wright will continue to lead from the front. He produced a remarkable innings at Chelmsford in 2014, smashing an unbeaten 153 as Sussex pulled off a world-record run chase with nine balls to spare. They have another accomplished performer in Laurie Evans who was the highest run-scorer in T20 cricket last year with 614 runs. The bowing will be led by Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan who was named Wisden’s leading T20 cricketer in the world for 2018.

What are their chances? With their quality line-up, they will be highly considered for a repeat successful run in the competition as they boast a core group of experienced exciting players. With Wright and Phil Salt to ignite the batting, expect fireworks alongside their breath-taking fast bowlers Tymal Mills, Jofra Archer (pictured on the right) and Chris Jordan. Tickets You are required to scan your ticket to gain entry into the ground. Please have your ticket ready as you approach the entrance to reduce congestion into the ground.

Accessible seating is situated in Block 1 in the Red Area and in Block 30 and 31 in the Green Area. There is also step free access to the MBS Eagles Area which will be open during all Vitality Blast matches. You must hold the correct ticket to sit in any of these areas.

The Moulsham Street (George Street) Car Park can be accessed via New London Road next to the United Brethren pub. Traffic should turn into New London Road from Parkway before turning left into New Writtle Street at the traffic lights. George Street is located on the right hand side. The postcode for this car park is CM2 0LG.

By Road The Cloudfm County Ground is situated in the heart of Chelmsford City Centre on New Writtle Street, Chelmsford, CM2 0PG. There is no car parking at The Cloudfm County Ground on matchdays. However, there are a number of public car parks available in the area. From London: Take the A12 Northbound and exit at Junction 17. Follow Essex Yeomanry Way into the City Centre. From Norwich/Ipswich/ Colchester: Take the A12 Southbound and exit at Junction 17. Follow Essex Yeomanry Way into the City Centre. From Cambridge: Take the M11 Southbound and exit at Junction 8. Follow the A120 Eastbound and exit at Barnston and follow the B1008 (Chelmsford Road). Follow signs for Broomfield Hospital and continue on B1008 into the City Centre. By Bus Chelmsford Bus Station is situated next to Chelmsford Train Station with connections to all over the County. Alternatively, bus numbers 42 and 100 which are operated by FirstGroup stop on New London Road, which is approximately a two minute walk from the ground. By Train Chelmsford Train Station is situated less than half a mile from the ground and takes approximately 5 minutes to walk from the station to The River Gate. The Train Station is serviced by
