South African fantasy and horror author Michael Ferguson is taking on the world of publishing, not by storm, but little by little; one book at a time He recently took some time out of his schedule to sit down with Essential Wellness Journal and discuss his books, what being an author means to him and his journey so far in the world of writing and publishing
“In my experience, there is no such thing as overnight success and if that is what you are expecting from becoming an author then I am sorry to tell you, but you are doing it for the wrong reasons,” he said from his home in Pretoria East.
Ferguson has been self-publishing his books and short stories since 2015 when he uploaded Keeping Geoffrey's Head (a horror-comedy short about a frustrated housewife who decides to keep the zombified head of her husband as a pet) to Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing From there he went on to publish Ephemera: Short Fictions and Anomalies (a collection of short stories that range from the hilarious to the bizarre) in 2020 In 2021 he published The Acrimonious: Paranormal Fictions, a collection of novella-length stories that focuses on a coven of witches who help the residents of a mysterious and creepy town inspired by the areas he grew up in in the East Rand of Johannesburg.

I wanted to create a mythology of my own
“When people ask me what my stories are about I tell them they are about normal people overcoming internal or external obstacles but I choose to tell them through the lens of horror and fantasy because those are the genres that I feel the most at home communicating in My books are filled with monsters and demons but I think the real monsters are the ones that dwell within us ”
A good example of this is his short story He Creature, published on Amazon in May of 2023. The story takes a gruesome look at the dark underbelly of gay culture that is not often spoken about in mainstream media.
“I find (as a gay man) that the gay community is very good at preaching about tolerance, acceptance and love but when it comes to actually practicing those values the community falls a little flat. I had been thinking about that a lot before sitting down to write He Creature which at its core is not an inherently gay story about a monster lurking inside a gay bathhouse, but rather a story about the monstrous ways people treat each other and the monstrous ways people sometimes accept being treated because they don’t believe they deserve to be treated better. I think a lot of people can relate to that, no matter what background they come from or how they identify ”
In November of 2022 Krest Publishers, a local publisher based in Durban, offered him a traditional publishing agreement for his debut fantasy novel A Prophecy of Flowers and Lightning. The book was then published in July of 2024, is currently available in bookstores like Bargain Books, Wordsworth Books and Exclusive Books across South Africa and retails for R275.00.

Set in a world of cruel and petty gods and terrifying monsters, A Prophecy of Flowers and Lightning follows the journey of Cadence, a farm boy cursed by the gods with the ability to see the future. Shunned by his abusive family and ostracized by his superstitious community for his dark and mysterious power, the youth leads a lonely existence until fate intervenes.
Cadence meets Arlo, the prince of the Luciferian Empire and the two have no idea how deeply connected they really are by the Great Cosmic Web of the Fates A friendship quickly blooms into something more as the two youths navigate the worlds of duty and their emotions together
The Empire of Luciferian is ruled over by the iron fist of the power-hungry Emperor Abydos, and by his side is Arsinoe, a mysterious sorceress and Empress of Luciferian. In his never-ending quest to dominate, he awakens a dark force that will bring famine, war, and ultimate devastation to the Empire.
Arlo and Cadence have an integral role to play in the war to come, one in which their combined demise has been prophesied. Can Cadence and Arlo break the web the Fates have woven for them, or will they become entangled by it?

Q: What sparked your love for writing?
A: My love for writing was definitely sparked by a love for reading that I had from a young age
I’ve been an avid reader my whole life Before I could read myself my parents used to read fairytale books to me, then once I learned to read I fell in love with classic children's books by Enid Blyton and Roald Dahl From there I progressed to R L Stien’s Goosebumps books and books by Philip Ridley I’m also part of the Harry Potter generation I read the first book when I was in primary school and the last one came when I was in grade 11 Passionate readers make great writers
Q: Have you ever experienced writer's block and if so how did you overcome it?
A: I have and I still do But the longer you are an author the more tricks to learn to overcome it The best thing to do is to just keep writing, it doesn’t have to be great but as long as you are putting pen to paper you are moving in the right direction
Q: What makes your books different from other local authors?
A: I don’t think there are any South African fantasy authors that do what I do in the way I do it. No two voices are the same and everyone’s journey as an author is also unique. I haven’t come across another South African horror/fantasy author who focuses on the themes my work focuses on or tells stories in the same way I do.
Q: Are any of the characters from A Prophecy of Flowers and Lightning inspired by real people in your life?
A: There are no characters in any of my books or stories that aren’t in one way or another inspired by a combination of real people I like to cherry-pick elements from different people that I know (well or just in passing) and combine those elements to create my own characters
Q: How do you keep yourself on track with planning and writing a book? I always find myself going down research rabbit holes due to my ADHD?
A: I try to stay as organized and disciplined as possible I give myself certain goals and deadlines for those goals and do my best to achieve them. My mantra is: Do one thing for your book everyday, even if it’s a small thing. All the small things eventually add up and then before you know it, you have a full draft in front of you.

A few weeks ago I completed my first trail run race that was an epic 20km in Paarl This is serious stuff and completing it in a respectable time of 2hr 15min is the bonus What does this have to do with plant based lifestyle and nutrition? Everything as I believe it was one of the keys to my success, seeing that I am 42, took up running 5 years ago with limited time, while juggling a newly started family, a full time job and running a new start up on the side. This is not a story of someone who had endless time to train, go for massages and pump supplements. This is the story of fueling the body with clean plant food and heaps of determination.
With one week to go on a Friday morning, I ran what I estimate to be 15km of hard trail running and was at my desk at 08:15 I ran in the dark for the first half of the run and I had broken sleep Doing this and then finding that I still felt energised the rest of the day, left me feeling so much appreciation for the nutrition and lifestyle path I have chosen I want to share it with anyone who will listen You don’t need to go extreme, just start and you will find your way You don’t need a special recipe book, you need a little curiosity and a willingness to try something new There are endless recipes online for anything you can think of Some will be unhealthy, others maybe a little too healthy for your liking Find something that sounds good and make it, as long as the recipe ingredients are real food. Did you know you can even make a plant based bolognese sauce? Look it up, there are many variations, one example would be to use lentils, mushrooms and tomatoes.
Breakfast: Possibly the easiest thing to cook and highly underrated. Oat Porridge. Just add a sprinkle of imagination Get some rolled oats, you can buy in bulk in many places and mix up your fav ingredients. Some chopped nuts, sunflower and pumpkin seeds, raisins, goji berries and maybe some sesame seeds Mix up a big batch To Cook add water to cover the oats plus a little more and simmer for 10 mins till you get the texture you want. You can add banana or apple for extra sweetness and flavour
Lunch: Chickpea “tuna” mayo. Normal mayo is not plant based but there are many good vegan mayos these days To make this dish, use some cooked chickpeas, mash them up, add some mayo. Next add some finely chopped pickles to add crunch and flavour We use homemade sauerkraut instead of pickles. Pick something crunchy and tangy. You can also add a little bit of finely chopped pepper Serve on toast, rice cakes etc and enjoy You will be surprised how good this is!
Dinner: Curries and stews, using lentils, chickpeas or beans Throw it all in a pot with your fav veg and spices and let it simmer Serve with rice, bread or quinoa. Bonus is that it is easy to make larger quantities of this sort of food to have for another meal in a few days
