Es un gran placer darle la bienvenida al primer Marbella Masters. Northern Vision está encantado de celebrar este nuevo evento en el Club de Tenis de Puente Romano. Es un privilegio poder realizar el Marbella Masters en este magnífico lugar, que en mi opinión es el club de tenis más exquisito de Europa.

Tenemos el honor de dar la bienvenida al español Sergi Bruguera a Puente Romano. Fue doble campeón del Open de Francia y número tres del tenis mundial, y también fue medalla de plata en los Juegos Olímpicos de 1.996, en los que perdió en la final contra André Agassi. Es considerado uno de los mejores especialistas en tierra batida desde 1.990 y se mantiene en una estupenda forma física para participar en el circuito senior.

También es un gran placer darle la bienvenida a Marbella a Martina Hingis. Martina realizó la entrada más extraordinaria nunca vista al circuito de la WTA, y ganó cinco títulos de Grand Slam, incluyendo Wimbledon, antes de cumplir los 19 años. Martina es una gran embajadora del tenis, y sus movimientos y actitud en las pistas son un gran ejemplo a seguir para todos los jóvenes y futuras promesas del tenis.

El Marbella Masters también presentará a Richard Krajicek, el primer holandés que ganó Wimbledon y el campeón del Master de Manchester de este verano. Tuve la suerte de visitar a Richard en Rotterdam este año durante el evento mundial de tenis de ABN AMRO, del cual es Director, y puedo decir que sus elegantes cualidades en pista se vieron reflejadas en la manera en la que organizó el evento, que durante una semana atrajo a más de 100.000 espectadores.

Sergi y Richard se enfrentarán a algunos de los grandes talentos del tenis, como el campeón de Wimbledon de 1.987 Pat Cash, el antiguo número 1 británico Jeremy Bates y el marroquí Younes El Aynaoui, antiguo número 14 del Mundo. El desafío más duro será, sin embargo, contra el Harlem Globetrotter del tenis mundial, Mansour Bahrami. Nunca sabes lo que puedes esperar cuando está jugando Mansour. It is a great pleasure to welcome you to the inaugural Marbella Masters. Northern Vision is delighted to host this new event at the Puente Romano Tennis Club. It is a privilege to stage the Marbella Masters at such a magnificent venue, which in my opinion is the finest tennis club in Europe.

We are honoured to welcome the Spaniard Sergi Bruguera to Puente Romano. The two-time French Open champion and former world number three is also a silver medallist from the 1996 Olympic Games where he lost to André Agassi in the final. He is regarded as one of the top clay court specialists from the 1990s and remains in great physical condition for the seniors’ circuit.

It is also a great pleasure to welcome Martina Hingis to Marbella. Martina made the most remarkable entry to the WTA circuit and won five Grand Slam titles, including Wimbledon, before she was 19. Martina is a great ambassador for tennis, and her movements and attitude on court are something that all young and promising players should learn from.

The Marbella Masters will also feature Richard Krajicek, the first Dutchman to win Wimbledon and our champion from the Manchester Masters this summer. I was fortunate to visit Richard in Rotterdam this year during the ABN AMRO world tennis event, where he is the tournament director, and his elegant on-court skills were truly reflected in the way he organised that event – a week that attracts more than 100,000 spectators.

Sergi and Richard will be up against some serious tennis talent in the form of 1987 Wimbledon champion Pat Cash, former British No 1 Jeremy Bates and Morrocan Younes El Aynaoui, former world no. 14. The toughest challenge though must be the Harlem Globetrotter of world tennis, Mansour Bahrami. You never really know what to expect when Mansour is playing. His eye – hand coordination is amazing; and had it not been for an anti-tennis regime in Iran during his youth, I am convinced he would have held several Grand Slam titles. Can you imagine him in a Slam final against John McEnroe? That would have been a moment to treasure.

H

a pasado más de una década desde que en 1.975, Manuel Orantes consiguiera un nuevo éxito para España, en las Pistas del Roland Garros, después de las victorias conseguidas por el gran Manolo Santanta en los años sesenta.

En 1.993, 18 años más tarde, otro joven jugador de tenis español resultó victorioso en el torneo más importante de tierra batida. La final fue contra Jim Courier, y entre el público estaban su excitado padre y entrenador Lluis Bruguera, y el omnipresente padrino del tenis español, Manolo Santana.

Aquella resultó ser la tarde más dulce de su carrera deportiva, el momento más importante, el regalo perfecto para su 22 cumpleaños. El público francés, se rindió ante el esfuerzo de Bruguera y le apoyó durante todo el año siguiente, en el que tuvo que luchar por su título. Su adversario en aquel momento fue Alberto Berasategui. El juego era diferente, ya que el campeón que tenía que defender el título, se enfrentaba a un colega y amigo que conocía muy bien su juego.

Dos años más tarde, después de la dolorosa recuperación de una lesión, consiguió otro de sus sueños: una Medalla Olímpica en Atlanta en 1.996. Como atleta, Bruguera piensa que los Juegos Olímpicos son la única experiencia comparable a un Grand Slam.

Sergi es parte de la élite del deporte español. Es recordado por su aparente agotamiento que dejaba perplejos a sus rivales en la pista, por su devastador revés a dos manos y porque personificó el salto de calidad del tenis español, derrotando a Emilio Sánchez-Vicario y dando comienzo a una serie de jugadores como Carlos Moyá, Albert Costa, Corretja, Ferrero y Rafael Nadal.

Pero Bruguera es un hombre modesto, él nunca se ha sentido como el precursor de nada.

Hoy en día, Sergi distribuye su tiempo entre la academia familiar Bruguera Tennis Academy Top Team, y los torneos senior, donde triunfa con su hábil juego. Cuando le preguntan sobre su visión acerca de los nuevos jugadores amateur, responde que los jugadores jóvenes intentan practicar el tenis en todas las superficies, y además intentan basar su estilo en la fortaleza física. A pesar de que en algunas ocasiones esto puede suponer un gran éxito, también implica una gran limitación a efectos de juego: los jugadores son muy parecidos y se pierde parte de la belleza del juego, como son la variedad y el virtuosismo.

ore than a decade had passed when in 1975 Manuel Orantes provided more success for Spain on the courts of Roland Garros, following the victories of the great Manolo Santana in the 60’s. 18 years later in 1993, another young Spanish tennis player emerged victorious from the most important tournament on clay. The final was against Jim Courier, watched by his excited father and coach Lluis Bruguera, alongside the ubiquitous Godfather of Spanish tennis, Manolo Santana.

It was the sweetest afternoon of his sports career, the most important moment, the perfect gift for his 22nd birthday. The French public surrendered to the effort of Bruguera, and supported him the following year in his fight for the trophy. This time his adversary would be Alberto Berasategui. This game was different.

The defending champion was faced with a colleague and friend who knew his game very well.

Two years later, after a painful recovery from injury, he achieved another dream: an Olympic medal in Atlanta 1996. As an athlete, Bruguera believes the Olympic Games is an unique experience comparable to a Grand Slam.

Sergi is part of the elite of Spanish sport. He is remembered for his look of exhaustion that perplexed his rivals on court, his devastating two-handed backhand and how he personified the leap in quality of Spanish tennis, beating Emilio Sánchez-Vicario and starting a series of players like Carlos Moyà, Albert Costa, Corretja, Ferrero and Rafael Nadal. But Bruguera is a humble person: he never felt like a precursor of anything.

Today, Sergi distributes his time between the familiar academy: Bruguera Tennis Academy Top Team, and the senior tournaments where he triumphs with his skilful play. When asked about his vision of new amateur players, he responds that young players enjoy the possibility to practice on all the surfaces, and try to base their style on physical strength. Although this can be successful on occasions, it involves a narrow range of play, meaning that players look very similar and some of the beauty of the game (aspects of variety and virtuosity) is lost.

Sergi Bruguera considers himself a lucky person. For this reason, for the past nine years he has been working with the Special Olympics Association and other disadvantaged groups in our society. To share his time and skills with these people is a way of helping and improving the world through the happiness that the sport has given him.

Compartir su tiempo y sus habilidades con estas personas es una manera de ayudar y mejorar el Mundo, compartiendo la felicidad que el deporte le ha proporcionado a él.

Bruguera también tiene otros hobbies. Es un fan de Los Angeles Lakers y del Fútbol Club Barcelona. Dice que los últimos años han estado plagados de victorias y que tiene confianza en los jugadores de ambos equipos, como Gasol de los Angeles Lakers y , por supuesto, en el entrenador del Barça. Sigue jugando a las cartas y está reconocido como uno de los mejores jugadores de póker del país.

Cuando se le pregunta por la élite del tenis actual, Sergi elogia mucho a Federer, a quien considera el mejor jugador de todos los tiempos, pero también considera que la tenacidad mental y la gran fortaleza física de Nadal, le van a asegurar su permanencia en el puesto número uno del tenis mundial.

Está encantado de poder participar en el Marbella Masters 2.010 y poder jugar de nuevo contra “viejos amigos”, como Krajicek, Aynaoui y Bates. Cuando le preguntamos por Pat Cash, Sergi expresa su temor frente al jugador, ya que el australiano tiene un juego muy fino de voleas y un gran dominio de la red.

También tiene un gran respeto por Mansour Bahrami. “Bahrami es un jugador extraordinario: no hay nada en tenis que él no pueda hacer. Está entre lo más alto del tenis y además hace que el público se divierta.”

Seguro que será un placer para el público del Marbella Masters ver a Sergi Bruguera en acción: una leyenda del tenis que está a pleno rendimiento, físicamente en forma y que está disfrutando de su tenis en el circuito senior más que nunca.

Bruguera also enjoys other hobbies. He is a fan of the Los Angeles Lakers and Barcelona Football Club. He says the last years have been full of victories and remains confident in the players of both teams, such as Gasól (of the LA Lakers) and of course, the Barcelona coach. He continues to play cards and is one of the most recognised poker players in the country.

Asked about the tennis elite of today, Sergi is full of praise for Federer, whom he considers to be the best player ever to play the sport, but also believes that the mental tenacity and the current strong physical condition of Nadal will ensure he remains the world number one.

Regarding his inclusion in the 2010 Marbella Masters, he is delighted to get the chance to play against “old friends” such as Krajicek, Aynaoui and Bates once again. When asked about Pat Cash, Sergi speaks of his awe of the player, as he notes the Australian’s subtle game, volleys and mastery of the net. He also has a great respect for Mansour Bahrami. “Bahrami is an outstanding player: there is nothing in tennis that he can not do.

He is up amongst the greats of the game and also makes it fun for the public“.

Certainly it will be a treat for those attending the Marbella Masters to watch Sergi Bruguera in action: a tennis legend who remains highly skilfull, physically fit and is enjoying his tennis on the seniors’ circuit more than ever.

artina Hingis tiene una sonrisa de 1.000 watios. Y ese potente rayo de luz está iluminando de nuevo las pistas de tenis este verano, ya que la tenista suiza está disfrutando de su tenis más que nunca.

Hingis tiene muchas cualidades en la pista de tenis: el equilibrio de una bailarina, un cuerpo atlético y una variedad de golpes que contrastan con el juego de potencia de sus contemporáneas, además de su indudable atractivo. Sin lugar a dudas, lo primero que llama la atención de ella es su gran y reluciente sonrisa, sus fans y admiradores podrán disfrutar de ella mucho más en el Masters de Marbella 2010.

artina Hingis has a 1,000 watt smile. And that radiant beam has been illuminating tennis courts once again this summer, because the Swiss Miss is enjoying her tennis more than ever before.

Hingis´ qualities on a tennis court are many. She has balletic poise, wiry athleticism and at her peak the variety of shots was in total contrast to the power-play of her contermporaries. She looks good, too. It is undoubtedly that big, beaming smile you notice first. And fans and admirers will see a lot more of it at the Marbella Masters 2010.

“I still love the game of tennis. I always had joy in what I was doing,” she explained, “but now I enjoy it more because I play only when I want to play. I can choose when I enjoy it rather than do it week in week out. Before, it was a job when you had to put 100 per cent into it, sometimes more, every time you stepped on a court. My body took a lot of pounding. But now I only play when I want to play. And when I do I can relax more and enjoy it.”

This summer, Martina has been busy doing what she does best. In June, she played a mixed doubles exhibition match with John McEnroe at the Liverpool International Tennis Tournament, before travelling to SW19 to team back up with Anna Kournikova for the Women’s Invitation Doubles at Wimbledon.

Puedo permitirme jugar cuando me apetece, en vez de hacerlo semana tras semana.” “En el pasado el tenis fue para mí un trabajo en el que tenía que dar el cien por cien, y a veces más, cada vez que pisaba una pista, me sentía muy nerviosa.” “Pero ahora solo juego cuando quiero, y cuando lo hago estoy más relajada y lo disfruto.”

Este verano, Martina ha estado muy ocupada haciendo lo que mejor sabe hacer. En Junio jugó un partido de exhibición de pares mixtos con John McEnroe en el Torneo Internacional de Tenis de Liverpool, antes de volver a formar equipo de nuevo con Anna Kournikova para el Partido “Invitation” Dobles Femenino en Wimbledon. El glamuroso dúo, que jocosamente se autodenominan las Spice Girls, fue la pareja de dobles WTA vencedora en el año 1.999 y ganó también el Título de Dobles de Australia tres años más tarde. Siempre pareció que estaban destinadas a jugar juntas. Kournikova fue campeona ITF Júnior del Mundo en 1.995, un año después de que Hingis alcanzase ese título. En 1.996 fue elegida como Novata WTA del Año, de nuevo 12 meses después de que Hingis ganase dicho título, entonces fue cuando crearon una formidables pareja de dobles. Ambas jugadoras alcanzaron un gran éxito muy pronto, particularmente Martina, quien ganó tres de los cinco Grandes en categoría individual antes de cumplir los 17 años.

En 1.997, apenas con la mayoría de edad suficiente como para poder conducir un coche en Estados Unidos, Hingis barrió en la WTA Tour y hubiera ganado un Grand Slam si no hubiera sido por su sorprendente derrota frente a Iva Majoli en la final del Open de Francia. Gracias a su buena forma física, regularmente hacía buenos resultados en el comienzo de la temporada en el Open de Australia, que destaca por ser el más caluroso de los Cuatro Grandes eventos. Logró la marca de alcanzar 6 finales consecutivas en Melbourne, desde 1.997 a 2.002.

Pero fue en Wimbledon donde realmente hizo historia: en 1.996 se convirtió en la campeona más joven de Wimbledon, formando equipo con Helena Sukova y ganando el título de dobles femenino a la edad de 15 años y 9 meses. The glamorous duo – they facetiously referred to themselves as The Spice Girls – were WTA Doubles Team of the Year in 1999 and won the Australian Doubles title three years later. It always seemed that they were destined to play together. Kournikova was ITF Junior World champion in 1995, the year after Hingis claimed that crown. In 1996 she was voted WTA Newcomer of the Year… again just 12 months after Hingis held that title – then they teamed up in formidable doubles action. Both players enjoyed a lot of early success, in particular Martina, who won three of her five Major singles titles before she was 17 years old. In 1997, barely old enough to drive a car in the United States, Hingis mopped up on the WTA Tour and would have won a calendar Grand Slam but for a shocking defeat to Iva Majoli in the 1997 French Open final.

Because of her fitness, she regularly thrived at the seasonopening Australian Open, which features the most punishing heat of any Big Four event. She made a record six consecutive finals in Melbourne (from 1997-2002). But it was at Wimbledon where she truly made history. In 1996 she became the youngest ever Wimbledon champion when she teamed up with Helena Sukova to win the women’s doubles title aged 15 years and 9 months. She then became the youngest ever No.1 singles player and, for good measure, became the youngest Grand Slam singles winner in the 20th century by winning the Australian Open aged 16 years and 3 months. That was in February 1997. In July, she became the youngest singles champion at Wimbledon since Lottie Dod in 1887 by beating Jana Novotná in the final. The following year, Martina won all four Grand Slam women’s doubles titles, only the fourth player in women’s tennis history to do so. Having made history, Martina now wants to enjoy herself. l Ayatollah Jomeini fue criticado por muchas cosas en 1.970 en Irán. Pero nunca por impedir que el hijo de un hombre de una tribu de las colinas de Irán se convirtiera en un campeón de Wimbledon, a pesar de que esto fue exactamente lo que ocurrió.

Es una historia increíble, y el protagonista está aquí en Marbella para entretenerle a Vd. en este mes de Septiembre. Los fans del tenis conocerán a Mansour Bahrami por ser el mágico disidente que puede servir mientras sujeta seis bolas de tenis en su mano, un hombre que puede guardar pelotas de tenis en sus bolsillos mientras juega, y alguien que puede realizar voleas que giran locamente sobre la red.

Pero Bahrami no es solamente un “entertainer”, no es solamente un malabarista que puede hacer sonreir a los fans, sino que es el mayor ganador de Wimbledon, aunque realmente nunca lo fue. Si, de verdad. Su compañero de juego Ilie Nastase le llama “maestro”.

John McEnroe reconoce que es un genio. Y Rod Laer cree que es “el jugador más dotado por la naturaleza para coger una raqueta.”

Teniendo en cuenta que no tuvo una raqueta de verdad de su propiedad hasta los 13 años (aprendió a jugar solo, utilizando una antigua sartén de metal), es sin lugar a dudas el mejor jugador manejando un utensilio de cocina. Pero fue encarcelado para que no consiguiera llegar a lo más alto del tenis, porque el Ayatollah vió en el tenis una herramienta de Satán.

Allá por 1.997, cuando Bahrami todavía jugaba la Copa Davis a la edad de 41, dijo: “¿Queréis escuchar la historia de mi vida? ¿Pero me van a creer? “La sartén, la pobreza, el Ayatollah, los años en los que no tuve permiso para jugar al tenis, durmiendo sin techo en París, huyendo de la Policía... sí, supongo que mi historia es un poco fuera de lo común.” “Cuando tenía siete años jugaba con cualquier cosa que pudiera parecer una raqueta como un recogedor, una sartén, el mango de una escoba o un trozo de madera. Así fue como aprendí, normalmente por la noche, descalzo, cuando habían vaciado la piscina, golpeando una vieja pelota que alguien había tirado, contra las paredes de la piscina con una sartén o lo que fuera.”

Bahrami tenía 13 años cuando los amigos del Sha de la Federación de Tenis de Irán se dieron cuenta de que tenían un adolescente prodigio entre los suyos. Rápidamente llegó a ser uno de los grandes.

he Ayatollah Khomeini was blamed for many things in 1970s Iran. But never for stopping the son of an Iranian hill tribesman from becoming Wimbledon champion – even though that’s exactly what happened. It’s an astonishing story – and the victim is here in Marbella to entertain you this September. Tennis fans will know Mansour Bahrami as the magical maverick who can serve while holding six tennis balls in his hand, a man who can catch tennis balls in his pocket while playing an improbable winner – and somebody who can smash volleys which spin crazily back across the net.

But Bahrami is not just an entertainer, not only a lightweight juggler who makes the fans smile – he’s the greatest Wimbledon winner we never saw. Yes, really. Playing partner Ilie Nastase calls him a “maestro”. John McEnroe reckons he’s a genius. While Rod Laver believes him to be “the most naturally-gifted player ever to pick up a racket.” Since he didn’t own a real racket until he was 13 – he taught himself to play using a rusty old metal frying pan – he is indisputably the greatest player even to wield a kitchen utensil. But he was barred from achieving tennis greatness because the Ayatollah saw tennis as a tool of Satan.

Way back in 1997, when Bahrami was still playing Davis Cup tennis at the ago of 41, he said: “So you want to hear my life story? You think they will believe this? The frying pan, the poverty, the Ayatollah, the years of not being allowed to hit a tennis ball, sleeping rough in Paris, on the run from the police… yes, I suppose my tale is a little out of the ordinary.

When I was seven I would play with anything that looked like a racket such as a dustpan, frying pan, broom handle or a piece of wood. That’s how I learned, usually at night, barefoot, when they had drained the swimming pool – hitting an old ball someone had thrown away against the wall of the pool with a saucepan or whatever.”

Bahrami was 13 when the Shah’s friends on the Iranian Tennis Federation recognised they had a teenage prodigy in their midst. He was fast tracked to greatness. In 1975, he made his Davis Cup debut against Roger Taylor and lost 6-0, 6-0, 6-2, but being a quick learner, either on grass or with a frying pan, he won 9 of his next 11 singles matches in the competition before the Ayatollah’s henchmen banned tennis

Mansour Bahrami el tenis en el Irán de la revolución. “Durante tres años no tuve permiso para golpear una bola. Sobreviví jugando al backgammon todo el día, “ ha dicho. Finalmente, un amigo de una amigo persuadió al nuevo Ministro de Exteriores para que consiguiese a Bahrami un visado para visitar Francia. Se mudó a Francia con los ahorros de su vida y allí se los jugó en el Casino y ¡perdió!

“Elegí Francia porque hay cientos de pequeños torneos con premios en metálico. Pero tienes que ganar para conseguir dinero,” explicaba.

“Durante muchas semanas no tuve dónde dormir, así que paseaba por las calles de París. A menudo, tenía que hacer que una baguette me durara tres o cuatro días.” Habiendo perdido tres años de su carrera, por culpa de los fundamentalistas islámicos, Bahrami pasó los siguientes seis años como un prisionero virtual en Francia, porque no quiso convertirse en un refugiado político. “Un refugiado político es alguien que se arriesga a que lo maten si vuelve a casa – yo sólo era un jugador de tenis, pero no me atrevía a abandonar Francia por miedo a que no me dejasen volver a entrar en el país. “Cuando mi visado francés finalmente caducó, me convertí en un inmigrante ilegal. Cada vez que veía acercarse a un policía, yo cambiaba de dirección. Si me hubiesen preguntado por mis papeles o mi identificación, me habrían puesto en el primer vuelo de vuelta.”

En 1.981, Bahrami alcanzó la tercera ronda en el Open de Francia, después de lo cual su causa fue apoyada por influentes periódicos como L’Equipe y Le Figaro, quienes pidieron la renovación de su visado.

Finally, a friend of a friend of a friend persuaded the new foreign minister to grant Bahrami a visa to visit France. He arrived in France with his life savings, which he gambled in a casino and lost! “I chose France because there are hundreds of small tournaments with prize money. But you have to win to collect money,” he explained. “For weeks at a time I had nowhere to sleep, so I would walk the streets of Paris. Often, I would make one baguette last three or four days.”

Having lost three years of his career because of the Islamic fundamentalists, Bahrami then spent the next six years as a virtual prisoner in France because he refused to become a political refugee. “A political refugee is someone who risks being killed if they go home – I was only a tennis player, but I did not dare leave France in case they did not let me back in. When my French visa finally ran out I became an illegal immigrant. Every time I saw a policeman coming, I changed direction. If they had asked me for my papers or ID they would have put my on the first plane back.” In 1981, Bahrami reached the third round of the French Open as a qualifier, whereupon his cause was taken up by influential newspapers L’Equipe and Le Figaro, who demanded the renewal of his visa.

Nastase dice que seguro que hubiera estado entre los diez mejores jugadores del Mundo. Sí, creo que hubiera podido ser campeón de Wimbledon. Pero soy feliz. Juego 45 semanas al año y viajo más que cualquier otro jugador. En cualquier caso, es bueno para el alma haber pasado hambre en algún momento de tu vida.”

Bahrami ya no pasa hambre. Es el jugador más popular del senior tour y está muy solicitado, juega 40 semanas al año. “Adoro jugar.

Adoro sentir que la gente lo pasa bien viéndome, y no sé cuantos partidos pierdo, cuando debería ganarlos, solamente porque estoy haciendo bromas. Yes, I believe I could have been Wimbledon champion. But I am happy. I play 45 weeks a year and travel more than any other player. Anyway, it is good for the soul to go hungry at some time in your life.” Bahrami no longer goes hungry.

As the most popular competitor on the senior’s tour he is in demand and plays 40 weeks of the year. “I love playing. I love to feel people are having fun watching me. I cannot tell you how many matches I lose that I should win because I am joking around. Often I win but I feel the people haven’t enjoyed it so I am upset. I love to make them laugh. ichard Krajicek nos trae a la memoria dos momentos destacados de su carrera, en el año en que revolucionó el mundo del tenis: venciendo a Pete Sampras…. y a una “streaker” llamada Melissa.

En 1.996 Krajicek se convirtió en el primer holandés coronado como campeón de Wimbledon. Si esto fue un logro histórico, lo que Richard consiguió durante su carrera fue incluso más sorprendente. “Creo que haber llegado a los cuartos de final ha sido igual de especial para mí que ser campeón,” explicó. “En un período de tiempo de ocho años, en que probablemente se ha jugado el mejor tenis en pista de hierba de la historia, yo fui el único jugador que venció a Pete Sampras.”

Para situarles en el contexto, Sampras fue el jugador más dominante del Grand Slam antes de Roger Federer. El record de 14 títulos de Sampras no fue alcanzado hasta el año pasado por el fenomenal Federer, y en pista de hierba era practicamente imposible vencerle.

Pero Krajicek le venció (sin perder un solo set) y asombró al mundo del tenis. Imaginen la derrota de Roger Soderling frente a Rafael Nadal en Roland Garros en 2.009 La sensación de cuartos de final muchas veces ensombrece la derrota en la final del americano MaliVai Washington- y tal vez explica porqué la final de 1.996 es a veces más recordada por otro hecho.

ichard Krajicek recalls two stand out moments from the year he shook up the tennis world. Beating Pete Sampras… and a streaker called Melissa.

In 1996, Krajicek became the first Dutchman to be crowned Wimbledon champion. If that was an historic achievement, what Richard achieved en route was even more seismic. “I believe I did something in the quarter-final equally as special as becoming champion,” he explained. “In an eight year span of probably the greatest grass court tennis anybody has produced, I became the only player to win against Pete Sampras.” To put that into context, Sampras was the most dominant Grand Slam player prior to Roger Federer – Sampras’ record of 14 titles was topped only last year by the phenomenal Federer – and on grass he was well nigh unbeatable. But Krajicek did beat him – in straight sets – to stun the tennis world. Imagine Roger Soderling´s defeat of Rafael Nadal at Roland Garros in 2009 and then some.

The quarter-final sensation often overshadows the more anticipated straight-sets defeat of the unheralded American MaliVai Washington in the final – and perhaps explains why the 1996 final is sometimes better remembered for another sensation. “Everyone recalls the final for the streaker,” smiles Richard. “I still remember

A Centre Court streaker and a Dutch champion – two firsts in one Wimbledon – but while naked exhibitionism was instantly discouraged at SW19, Krajicek proved his 7-5, 7-6, 6-4 upset of “Pistol Pete” Sampras was no fluke. He amassed a 6-4 record against the American legend. But he couldn’t quite land another Wimbledon title. He was a semi-finalist in 1998 – this time losing a classic tussle to Goran Ivanisevic 6-3, 6-4, 5-7, 6-7, 15-13 – and in 2002 reached the last eight before Xavier Malisse ended his hopes of a second Wimbledon title. That was the era when Sampras won a record seven Wimbledon crowns, yet strangely he was not the man who gave Krajicek the most problems.

“Sampras and André Agassi were legends, but they did not give me the same repeated problems as the third American champion of that era, Jim Courier,” he admitted. “He was a baseliner, nothing flashy but brutally fit and completely uncompromising. I

admitido Krajicek. “Fue un jugador de fondo de pista, nada llamativo, pero estaba brutalmente en forma y era completamente imbatible. Jugué contra él en ocho ocasiones y solamente logré vencerle en una.” Courier fue un jugador de fondo, pero Richard fue la enorme variedad de jugadores en 1.990 lo que hizo que aquella época fuera tan entretenida. “La variedad de estilos, Boris Becker, Stefan Edberg, Patrick Rafter, Tim Henman, Greg Rusedski, todos ellos fueron jugadores de ataque a los que les gustaba subir a la red y volear.” dijo Richard. “Y yo también me incluyo esta lista.” Ocasionalmente, incluso vencímos a buenos jugadores de fondo de pista, como Sergi Bruguera o Thomas Muster sobre tierra batida. La aptitud para volear es algo que no se enseña a la gente joven hoy en día, y creo que es una pena.” Más tristes fueron las desafortunadas experiencias de Krajicek con las lesiones.

John McEnroe dijo en una ocasión: “Richard Krajicek puede lesionarse solamente de pensar que va a salir a jugar.” Y Richard confirma, “los peores momentos fueron los de las lesiones y probablemente el peor capítulo fue el de el codo que me tuvo fuera durante 20 meses en 2.000 y 2.001.” ”Fue una agonía y me desanimó profundamente, había días que no podía ni cepillarme los dientes o untarme una tostada. Pero no hay mal que por bien no venga, y durante la rehabilitación de una de mis lesiones conocí a mi mujer Daphne Deckers, antigua chica Bond.”

Hoy en día Richard trabaja en finanzas. Es además Director del Torneo ABN Amro World Tennis en Rotterdam, y comenta: “Me divierte el tenis senior y es bueno coincidir con otros compañeros, pero deseo hacer algo realmente importante: he creado una fundación que ayuda a construir lugares para hacer deporte a niños de ciudades desfavorecidas en Holanda, hemos construido más de 70 parques.” Parece que Krajicek desea ser recordado por algo más que haber ganado un título en Wimbledon y por una streaker llamada Melissa.

played him eight times and only managed to win once.” But while Courier was an unashamed baseliner, it was the sheer variety of player in the 1990s that makes Richard believe that the era was so entertaining. “Boris Becker, Stefan Edberg, Patrick Rafter, Tim Henman, Greg Rusedski – they were all out-and-out attacking players who loved to approach the net and go for the volley,” he said. “I’d include myself in the list. Occasionally we’d even beat a baseline grinder such as Sergi Bruguera or Thomas Muster on clay. The ability to volley is something that is not taught as much to youngsters today and I find that sad.” Even sadder was Krajicek’s unfortunate experiences with injuries.

John McEnroe once said: ‘Richard Krajicek can get injured just thinking about going out to play.’ And Richard confirmed, “the worst moments centre on injuries and probably the toughest chapter was the elbow that kept me out for 20 months in 2000 and 2001. It was agony and essentially killed my spirit; I could not even brush my teeth or slice bread. But everything is there for a reason, and during one of the rehabs from injury I met my wife Daphne Deckers, former Bond girl.”

Nowadays, Richard works in finance. The Director of the ABN Amro World Tennis Tournament in Rotterdam, he says: “I enjoy senior tennis and it’s good to get together with the other guys.

But I want to do something that really matters and for a while I’ve had a foundation that provides sports facilities for children in inner-city areas in the Netherlands. We have built more than 70 playgrounds.” It appears that Krajicek aims to be remembered for far more than a Wimbledon title… and a streaker called Melissa!
