he strong Levante winds that bring the good weather are starting to ease, Ocean Village’s restaurants are starting to get busy, O’Reilly’s Irish Bar is serving its first pints of the black stuff, Gala Casino is open for business, Karl is getting his marina ready for new vessels and Pussers has just finished its National Pie Week... must be time for the first Gibraltar International Boat Show.

In today’s difficult climate for the boating industry both marine manufacturers and brokers are shying away from the larger national events in favour of more locally-focused shows. Here suppliers and customers can know that they are from the same area and needs can be better matched - hence the birth of the Gibraltar International Boat Show.

HOW TO GET THERE

By Road It is easy to reach Gibraltar from mainland Spain.

There are daily bus services from Málaga and Algeciras to the border town of La Línea de la Concepcion. From the bus station it is just a few minutes’ walk to the border. Various tour operators also run day trips from the Costa del Sol resorts to Gibraltar.

By Car By car you take the E15-A7 (former N340) coastal road and turn off at San Roque for La Línea (Exit 119). From this point the route to Gibraltar is very well sign-posted. Unfortunately, lengthy queues can form for cars wishing to go onto and leave the Rock due to passport control and customs. It is often better to park your car in La Línea and take the short walk across the frontier.

To check queues, in particular for exiting, at the border call Frontier Queue Information Tel: (+350) 200 42777 Once crossing the border, although the Marina is close by, taxis are available to take you to the main town before coming to the show

Gibraltar itself has no railway connections, however local towns San Roque and Algeciras, in Spain, are both served by Spain’s national rail network – visit www.renfe.es for further information and bookings.

By Sea

Once you are over the border in Gibraltar, Ocean Village is no more than a leisurely five or ten minute walk.

Cross the runway, pass the petrol station on your right, and at the first main roundabout turn right towards the sports centre following signs for ‘Marinas’. Once you pass the BMW garage on your right hand side, all lanes will lead onto the Marina and the Show.

Parking If you are coming to the Show by car, parking is available in the main Ocean Village car park.

To get there, rather than turn right at the main roundabout (see ‘How to get to the ShowOcean Village’), carry straight on and follow the signs to Europort (right hand lane). At the next turn right and immediately on the right will be the tunnelled access to the Ocean Village car park.

Public parking is only available on the lower floor and clamping is in operation at ground level as these spaces are reserved for marina residents.

Crossing the Border Entry to Gibraltar is FREE, do not let anyone try to sell you an entrance ticket! You will need a valid British or EU passport or a Visa that allows access to the UK. EU nationals can also use their identity card. Visitors entering from Spain, who require a visa to enter Spain, should be aware as by going to Gibraltar you will be deemed to have left Spain and so may well require a new visa to cross back into Spain.

At the Gibraltar International Boat Show you will be able to see “Aspiracion” - a Pershing 88 which was the twelfth off the production line for that hull type in what is now an iconic range of fast yachts.

Aspiracion represents the top-end of sports luxury combined with the true power harnessed by twin Arneson drives producing over 4000hp.

Her styling is probably the most distinctive in production yachting yet she is fast, tough and her hull design is one of the finest to date.

The Pershing Yacht story began in 1981 with wooden boats built by three friends with a fanatical love of the sea, each with considerable yacht building experience and a passion for fast cruising.

By 1985 the Pershing 45’ had been born, designed in collaboration with Fulvio De Simoni, and the yacht met with instant international success due to

its numerous innovations. Pershing had expanded to a worldwide yacht dealer network by the early 1990s with over 70% of their production going to the Far East and United States.

In 1998 Pershing became part of the Ferretti Group and gained worldwide exposure through the intense marketing efforts of yachts by this conglomerate. This has resulted in an expansive range of sport yachts, and ultimately large motor yachts, with an emphasis on speed and handling.

In 2004 Pershing opened a new manufacturing headquarters in Mondolfo, Italy, to adapt and implement the latest technologies and materials used in the construction of yachts.

Inside Aspiracion you will find accommodation for up to six guests in three cabins and four crew in

two crew cabins as well as a separate office. The full beam owner’s cabin is spacious with seating, wardrobes and a large en-suite bathroom with shower. A double VIP cabin is located towards the bow. There are two twin guest cabins to port and starboard. Each cabin has its own bathroom.

t 2pm on Sunday 12 April we will be holding the first public auction of boats in Gibraltar made available to the general public. These yachts are pre-owned and need to be sold, so represent exceptional value at their base ‘reserve prices’.

Each yacht has been warranted as being in good seaworthy condition and is sold with a full Marine Survey included in the purchase price - although successful bidders will be able to select their own surveyors if required.

Full completion is subject to satisfactory survey and the inventory listed on the Auction Document being deemed to have been provided.

Partly due to the current climate in the financial markets and the diminishing amount of time that potential yacht owners have to spend on leisure; Fractional Ownership (FO) has become one of the biggest growth areas in yacht purchase.

Fractional Ownership is where the outright purchase of a yacht has been financed by one buyer and then made available for up to six other ‘owners’ who share the initial purchase costs and ongoing running costs equally for a fixed period. Time is then allocated between the ‘owners’ on an equal basis, dependent either on pre-defined requirements or by simple negotiation of weeks. Non-allocated time is then free for general use Regarding the laws on Fractional Ownership this could not be more easily defined as FO dates back to the 18th Century. Explorer ships were owned and financed by different countries who each earned a stake in the unexplored territories discovered. In fact, to this day, yachts are sold in 64th shares with an outright owner receiving “64/64ths”.
