Press Play on Wrexham By WREXHAM COMMUNITY & CULTURE TRUST With an invitation to come and play, Wrexham is putting culture - and playfulness - at the heart of its plans to establish itself as a thriving creative industries hub, a significant cultural destination, and a place where every child gets the best possible start in life. Having been longlisted earlier this year, it has submitted its citizen-led formal bid in the competition to become the next UK City of Culture in 2029. Led by Wrexham Community & Culture Trust, the independent charity established with the support of Wrexham County Borough Council, the Wrecsam2029 bid draws on the city’s international reputation for radical playwork, on its centuries-long history as a place of enterprise and innovation, and on its borderland identity. Wrecsam2029 turns that spirit of generosity, inventiveness and being open to everyone into a practical vision for the future - one that brings people together, strengthens pride and belonging, and helps build healthier, happier and more sustainable communities. Being UK City of Culture would boost Wrexham's ambitions to build on its status as one of the fastest growing tourist destinations in Wales. It is estimated that the year would attract over two million visitors, who would have the opportunity to enjoy thousands of additional events alongside the existing cultural offer.

EssentialsMAG | September 2026
This, in turn, is expected to significantly boost tourism, visitor economy and creative sector jobs. Official bid submitted With Wrexham's official bid now submitted, the next milestone will come in midOctober, when the UK Government announces the shortlisted places. If Wrexham is selected, the county will welcome judges for a visit in November or December 2026, before the successful UK City of Culture 2029 is announced in early January 2027. Over the coming months, the Wrecsam2029 team will continue to build momentum for the campaign to raise awareness of the bid and the transformative opportunities it could bring to Wrexham and the wider region, working alongside partners, advisors and more than 100 Ambassadors. Through an ambitious programme of marketing, communications and community engagement, the team will share Wrexham's story, rich heritage, vibrant culture and unique identity, while preparing to welcome the judging panel and demonstrate why Wrexham is ready - and deserves - to be crowned UK City of Culture 2029.

Wrexham Tourism News By JOE BICKERTON, Tourism Manager, Wrexham County Borough Council It’s been another busy few weeks for tourism in Wrexham. One of the most visible additions this summer has been the return of the Wrexham Sheep Trail. Following the popularity of the original trail back in 2016, a new flock has arrived, with 16 newly decorated sheep joining some familiar faces from the original trail. Designed by local artist, Ellie Ashby, and supported by local businesses, the trail is a fun way for families to explore Wrexham. There’s a serious purpose behind it too encouraging people to explore different parts of the county, discover somewhere new and perhaps stop for a coffee, lunch or a little shopping along the way all helps to support our fantastic hospitality and tourism businesses. Printed trail maps are available from the Wrexham Visitor Information Centre. This is Wrecsam team have been working with partners along the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct & Canal World Heritage Site throughout the summer. This has included supporting water safety messaging along the Llangollen Canal, as well as the introduction of new wardens at Pontcysyllte Aqueduct to help manage boat traffic and keep things moving safely during busy periods. We’re also working with partners to refresh some older visitor signage and generally tidy up the appearance of tourism signs around the area. Chirk Aqueduct celebrates its

225th anniversary this year, and we’re working with partners on celebrations for Chirk residents during October. There will be more news on those very soon! August has also marked a hugely important milestone with the official submission of Wrecsam’s bid to become UK City of Culture 2029. There has been an enormous amount of work behind the scenes to reach this point, involving communities, organisations, businesses and individuals from across the county. From a tourism perspective, the opportunity is hugely exciting. Culture is already such an important part of what makes Wrexham distinctive, and the bid gives us an incredible opportunity to tell our story to audiences across the UK. If you haven’t yet visited the giant WRECSAM letters at Stori Brymbo, you only have a few weeks left to catch them there too. Created from a huge fallen oak from the Trevalyn Estate by local artist Simon O’Rourke, the letters were always designed to travel around the county, and they’ll soon be heading off to their next location. Finally, good luck to our Environment Team, following recent visits from the Wales in Bloom and Britain in Bloom judges. An enormous amount of work goes into keeping our communities looking their best, and that work makes a real difference not only for residents, but for the thousands of visitors we welcome too.

By ELAINE LACEY, Chair of Governors, Darland High School
September is always an exciting time as we welcome new faces into our school community. One of the highlights of the term will be our Open Evening on Wednesday 23 September 2026 for prospective students and their families. They'll have the chance to meet our staff, hear directly from our students, tour the site and view our excellent facilities, as well as experience the warm, welcoming atmosphere that is Darland. As governors, we are very aware that a successful school is far more than examination results. At Darland we care about the relationships that are built, the confidence that our students develop and the many experiences that encourage every learner to achieve their very best.
families and the wider community feel proud to support. We’ve refreshed our official facebook page so that you can follow our students’ endeavours. For this academic year, our School Development Plan focuses on supporting planned progression, with particular emphasis on developing reading skills, providing effective feedback for learning, and implementing robust assessment practices. In February, our ski trip will take students to the fabulous slopes of Jasper, Canada, and later in the Spring Term, students will explore France as part of a curriculum enrichment visit. These exciting opportunities promise to make the year both enriching and memorable for everyone involved.
Whether through academic achievement, performing arts, charity work, enrichment activities, community engagement or sporting success our students represent Darland with pride and demonstrate our shared values - kindness, courage, honesty, resilience and respect. Our priorities include building even stronger links with our local community, and we want to make sure Darland continues to be a place that

Big Step, Little Shoes! It’s a big moment - their very first day of school. Whether you're feeling excited, emotional, or a mix of both, starting school is a milestone for your little one and you too. As September approaches, here are a few gentle, practical ways to help ease the transition and make the experience a positive one for everyone. Talk about what to expect Chatting with your child about school in a relaxed, upbeat way can really help settle nerves. Explain what a typical day might look like - playing, stories, lunch, home time - and talk about the fun parts. If you’re able to visit the school beforehand or attend an open day, even better. It helps them picture where they’ll be going and who they might meet. Practise independence You don’t need to turn them into mini grown-ups overnight, but practising a few key skills before they start can really build confidence. Things like putting on their coat, going to the toilet, washing their hands, and opening their lunchbox or snack pot all help children feel more in control when they’re away from home. Establish a routine A couple of weeks before the big day, try bringing bedtime and waking-up times in line with the new school schedule. Getting into a rhythm now means mornings will feel less rushed, and your child will be better rested and ready to learn (and play!). Let them express how they feel Starting school is a big change, and it’s normal for children (and parents!) to feel
20
EssentialsMAG | September 2026
all sorts of emotions. Reassure them that it’s okay to feel nervous or unsure. Encourage them to talk about their worries, and let them know that lots of children feel the same way - and that the grown-ups at school are there to help. Get involved where you can If your school offers stay-and-play sessions, settling-in mornings or a class WhatsApp group, take advantage of them. They’re a great way to help your child feel familiar with their new environment, and for you to meet other parents who are in the same boat. Quick checklist: • Label everything: clothes, shoes, lunch boxes… if it can be lost, label it! • Choose practical clothing: velcro shoes, easy zips, and elastic waistbands. • Pack together: let them help pack their bag so they know what’s inside and feel involved. • Plan the drop-off: keep goodbyes short and positive to help them feel confident. • Be kind to yourself: it’s a big moment for you too - emotions are completely normal. Finally, don’t forget - it’s a big step, but it’s the start of an exciting new chapter. There might be wobbles (from both sides!), but children are incredibly adaptable. With a bit of prep, a few deep breaths, and a lot of encouragement, your little one will soon be coming home full of stories about their day.

Sergeant Susan Carrington North Wales Police (NWP) Thirty years ago, on 12 August 1996, I walked through the doors of North Wales Police (NWP) Headquarters and began my career as a police officer. Crime looked very different then. We had no email, no internet, and computers were generally reserved for very important people! The rest of us relied on pocket notebooks and huge court files, painstakingly handwritten and put together by hand. My first posting was in Deeside, where thefts of and from motor vehicles were among our biggest crime problems. Car stereos were particularly popular and a 12-CD changer was a thief’s treasure, if you know, you know! Joyriding was common too, and stolen cars were often recovered burnt out. A few years later came a spate of “twilight burglaries”, where offenders would enter unlocked homes and steal handbags or other property left close to the door. One of the most frustrating things was that people did not always report these thefts, assuming they would never see their property again. Yet we quite often recovered stolen goods because we knew many of our local offenders. I will never forget executing a warrant at the home of a well-known handler and finding six car stereos hidden underneath a rabbit hutch. Weeks later, imagine my frustration when four had to be handed back because we could not prove they were stolen. Their owners had never reported them. Fast forward 30 years and crime has changed

enormously. Car stereos have disappeared, joyriding is largely a thing of the past, and stolen vehicles are now far too valuable simply to burn. But identifying recovered property can still be a problem. Thankfully, we now have better solutions. NWP recommends Immobilise, a free property-registration database where people can record valuables, photographs and serial numbers, alongside forensic propertymarking products such as SmartWater. These can help police identify recovered property and return it to its rightful owner. As I retire and hand my uniform back into stores, a couple of sizes bigger than when it was first issued, I look back on a wonderful career filled with stories, friendships and, most importantly, opportunities to help victims. Perhaps one thing has never changed: life would be far better with fewer victims, and we all have a part to play. Thank you, NWP, for a fantastic 30 years, and to all you lovely readers: stay safe. Gardening Tips and Advice September - Progressing into Autumn
September is generally a cooler, gustier month than August and the days are noticeably shorter. While there's not as much to do in the ornamental garden at this time of the year, if you have a fruit or vegetable patch, you'll be busy reaping the rewards of harvest. It's also time to get out and start planting spring-flowering bulbs for next year and you can collect seeds for next summer's colour too. Make the most of the remaining warmth while you can!
TOP 10 JOBS TO DO IN THE GARDEN THIS MONTH
26
1.
Divide herbaceous perennials
2.
Pick autumn raspberries
3.
Collect and sow seed from perennials and hardy annuals
4.
Dig up remaining potatoes before slug damage spoils them
5.
Net ponds before leaf fall gets underway
6.
Keep up with watering of new plants, using rain or grey water if possible
7.
Start to reduce the frequency of houseplant watering
8.
Clean out cold frames and greenhouses, ready for use in the autumn
9.
Cover leafy vegetable crops with bird-proof netting
10.
Plant spring flowering bulbs.

Maes y Pant Latest News by Chair Ian Happs
It’s been a challenging summer for wildlife across the country with frequent heatwave conditions and prolonged drought. The volunteers at Maes Y Pant have continued to work every month, although sometimes for shorter periods to cope with the heat. We’ve been very aware of the fire risk, putting up signage, posting messages on Facebook and alerting our volunteers and Friends group. We ask that no-one lights fires of any kind on the site particularly now as the woodland is so dry, and that visitors stay alert to the risk of fire and report any problems to the fire service using 999 or 112. We feel that the number of visitors to the site helps to reduce the risk of a major incident as there are so many eyes (and noses!) on the lookout – thank you!
appreciation, enthusiasm and kindness. The comments and photographs have been wonderful!
I described the wonderful hedgerow planted by the Brownies, Guides and Rangers in the June edition of Essentials, and I’m delighted to say it’s doing well despite the weather. Volunteers have been barrowing 120 litres of water to it two or three times a week during the hottest of the weather!

The Fairy Trail has been a fantastic success, delighting visitors of all ages and bringing in some welcome additional donations towards the upkeep of the woodland. We are very grateful to Maxine Griffiths for her amazing work and to all the visitors for their
We’re delighted that Maes Y Pant has been awarded a ‘Community Green Flag’ for the eleventh year in a row. The award is an international quality mark, presented in the UK by Keep Britain Tidy. Wales has more Green Flag sites than any other country in the world and it’s great to be part of that. You may have noticed that the Maes Y Pant website is looking much better, after a well overdue freshening up by our new host, Wrexham Web Design. We’d like to thank Julia for a great job. The URL is unchanged: www.maes-y-pant.com.
Volunteer sessions The volunteers continue their great work to keep the site safe and accessible for visitors of all ages and abilities. The next monthly session will be on Saturday 12 September and 10 October, from 10am until 12.30pm. If you would like to join us, you would be very welcome!

METHOD: Prepare the fruit Heat the oven to 180°C (160°C fan). In a large bowl, toss the apple pieces with the sugar, lemon juice and cornflour. Fold in the blackberries gently so they stay whole. Tip the mixture into a medium baking dish (roughly 20×25cm). Make the crumble In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, oats, brown sugar, cinnamon and salt. Add the cold butter and rub it in with your fingertips until you have a coarse, sandy crumble with a few larger buttery clumps. Assemble & bake Scatter the crumble evenly over the fruit. Seasonal Treats in September
In September, the seasonal produce undergoes a delightful transition, as summer's bounty gracefully makes way for the flavours of early autumn. This month serves as a bridge between the sun-kissed offerings of summer and the heartier, earthier fare that defines the approaching colder months. Apples and pears As the days gradually grow shorter and the temperature begins to drop, September sees a harmonious blend of summer and autumn produce. Plump tomatoes share space with the first crisp apples and pears of the season. Varieties like Braeburn, Cox's Orange Pippin, and Conference pears run the gamut from sweet to tart. These fruits are the quintessential harbingers of autumn, seamlessly blending into comforting pies, crisps, and compotes. Figs The appearance of figs adds a touch of exotic indulgence to the autumnal palette. Roasted figs are delicious and can be enjoyed as an appetiser or dessert. Simply cut the fig in half and lightly drizzle with olive oil, honey and balsamic vinegar. Place in the oven on a baking sheet for 10-15 minutes. They can be enjoyed on their own or paired with creamy goat cheese, ricotta, or Greek yogurt.

Vegetables Root vegetables, a hallmark of autumn, begin to emerge in September. Carrots, beets, and turnips offer their vibrant hues and earthy flavours, promising rich soups and roasted dishes that are both comforting and nourishing. Hardy greens like kale and Swiss chard thrive as well, adding a depth of flavour. From the wild Foraging enthusiasts are in for a treat during September. Hedgerows and woodlands become treasure troves, yielding plump blackberries and elderberries. These berries lend themselves to jams, preserves, and even the crafting of infused spirits, to enjoy later in the year. Pheasant shooting season begins in September, making this game bird a common feature on menus.
September shopping list Apples, Pears, Plums, Blackberries, Raspberries, Grapes, Elderberries, Damsons, Figs, Quinces, Pumpkins, Squashes, Carrots, Beetroot, Broccoli, Cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, Leeks, Spinach, Kale, Courgettes, Corn, Green beans.

Together For Gresford Lake By FRIENDS OF GRESFORD LAKE It’s great to have an opportunity to tell the community about our work with our precious lake. An awful lot has been done – and there’s even more that we simply can’t cover here – so the first thing to say is that there is a detailed timeline and account of what’s been happening, available to read on the Gresford Community Council website: www.gresfordcommunitycouncil.gov.uk. Of particular interest should be the Welsh Dee Trust Lake Assessment Report, which was commissioned to identify the problems, and how best to address them. The problem beneath the surface The Friends group knew that silt in the lake would be a growing problem, and a lot of time has been spent looking into practical methods and possible costs. It’s not a cheap process – quite the opposite – and it’s also not the sort of thing organisations usually give grants for. The increasingly hot, dry weather has had a really big impact on the silt and water levels in the lake, and the delicate balance between the two. Last summer, the community could see for the first time the silt that had been hidden beneath the surface. This year, the silt took over and the lake became almost completely dry. The Friends group saw this worrying situation as a potential opportunity to mechanically dig out a significant amount of the exposed, dry surface silt. When the lake is full of water, digging silt out is a far more difficult and expensive prospect.
36
EssentialsMAG | September 2026
The community comes together We set up a GoFundMe page to try to raise the £9,600 required to pay a contractor to dig out as much silt as possible. Funding to cover a potential Landfill Tax bill if more than 175 tonnes of silt was removed was also needed. And this community proved itself to be truly amazing! We were overwhelmed to see the donations pour in. Within days, we had raised more than £10,000! If you’d like to donate, please use this link: http://gofund.me/432ad2de3 Alternatively, you can donate directly into the FoGL NatWest savings account: 55-81-42, a/c 91595517. What comes next for the lake We will write again in a few months to share our plans for a borehole (to help combat the drought in years to come), and Rain Gardens, to stop a lot of future silt finding its way into the lake in the first place. We’d also love to tell you more about our general love of, and enthusiasm for, Gresford Lake! Apologies that this has been so firmly focused on silt, but we’re keen to move forward together with a community we know loves the lake, cares deeply about its future and is not afraid to put its money where its mouth is – and its heart. For regular updates, please visit Friends of Gresford Lake Facebook page.

How Do You Choose The Right Nursery? One of the questions I’m asked most often is: “How do I know which nursery is right for my child?” As parents, we have a natural instinct to keep our children safe and happy, and often, when you visit the right setting, you will simply get ‘a feeling’ that it’s the one for you. But here are some things I would recommend looking for when choosing a nursery for your child. 1. Do your research Visit several different nurseries at different times of the day to help you understand how each setting feels. I’d recommend: • Checking that the nursery is registered with Care Inspectorate Wales (CIW) and read its latest inspection report. • Requesting information directly from the nursery, such as a parent information pack. • Arranging a visit and find out about the nursery’s visiting policy. 2. Ask questions Take a list of questions with you. Don’t be afraid to ask anything that is important to you or your child. How the nursery responds can tell you a great deal about its approach and management. Consider asking: • What is your ethos and what do you believe is important for children? • What qualifications and experience do your practitioners have? • How will you support my child as they settle into nursery? • How will you meet my child’s individual needs and communicate with me about my child’s day, development and experiences?
38
EssentialsMAG | September 2026
3. Look beyond what you see Take time to observe the children and practitioners. Happy, engaged children are a great indicator. Do they appear comfortable, interested in their play, and secure in their relationships with practitioners? Positive practitioners are equally important. Look for adults who smile, make eye contact, communicate warmly and genuinely engage with children. Inviting environments should feel safe, secure, clean and welcoming, with suitable spaces and resources that encourage children to explore, play and learn. Choosing a nursery is about finding somewhere your child will feel safe, loved, valued and able to thrive. Trust your instincts, ask questions and take your time.

Gresford Trust Newsdesk Latest News By IAN GIBSON, Gresford Trust Chair The Trust held its AGM on 13 August, 2026, and received reports from the Chair, Treasurer and Safeguarding Officer. The election of Trustees for the coming year was confirmed. The meeting expressed its sincere gratitude to all the retiring Trustees for all their time and work during the past year. Thanks were also given to our Facilities Manager, Jo Burke, and Treasurer, Janet Holmes, for all their hard work. The following people were elected: Chair, Ian Gibson Vice Chair, Mark Perry Treasurer, Janet Holmes Safeguarding Officer, John Bell Village Representatives (at the time of writing): Richard Evans, Margaret Griffin, Phillip Jones, Steve Jones, Jayne Osborne, Gino Paletta, and Michelle Turner. We have additional vacancies for these roles and would welcome anyone who is interested in helping to work towards a brighter future for the Trust. All our Trustees for the affiliated groups remain the same for this year. George Morris, who has worked for us for 10 years, has decided to move on due to his expanded role at All Saints’ School. We wish
him every success going forward and our grateful thanks for all his work over the past few years. We had the pleasure of welcoming Sophie Later to our team earlier in the year as H&S Administrator, and we look forward to Laura Darlington joining our team as a Facilities Operative in September. I hope over the coming year we can develop a stronger link with a younger generation of villagers. After all, they are the future. Work on the Gas Governor installation on Trust land is finally ending. We are grateful to Wales and West for their cooperation by including a new accessible pathway to the football stands area. Easier access for less able people to the spectator areas is something the Trust were keen to achieve as it helps GAFC with their continuing efforts to re establish their place in the village. We therefore made a financial concession to finish the necessary work. All we need now is some rain - the extensive work carried out on the football pitch in March/April could do with some help from mother nature! Ian Gibson Chairperson

Understanding Trusts and How They Can Help Secure Your Estate By RICHARD HADLOW POWELL There’s no time like the present to plan for what could be coming down the road. You can help to secure your financial future, and those we love, by setting up a Trust. Trusts can be a tax-efficient way to ensure that your legacy is protected and will end up with the right people. Setting up a Trust early in your life can be beneficial for your own peace of mind. What is a Trust? A Trust is a type of legal structure that allows you, also known as the Settlor, to leave assets for your loved ones, known as Beneficiaries. Typically Trusts are paid out to your chosen Beneficiary once they turn a certain age, for certain reasons such as the beneficiary wanting to buy their first house, or if you were to pass away. Trusts are looked after by people known as Trustees, who you can choose. They will in turn deal with managing the trust and eventually, the passing over of your assets to the beneficiaries when the time comes, or you pass away. Note: Trustees can also be Beneficiaries. This is always your decision when setting up the Trust and can usually be changed if your circumstances change. Why would I need a Trust? Subject to some rules being met, assets held in Trusts are inheritance tax free – meaning it is not subject to probate, and will go straight to the beneficiaries upon your passing. You can rest easy knowing that the Trust will be secured and end up where you intended if your physical or mental ability becomes compromised. You don’t have to simply put money into a Trust, it can also be made up
44
EssentialsMAG | September 2026
of property, Life Insurance policies, and other assets. What are the different types of Trusts? Discretionary Trust: Trustees have complete control over how or when to distribute the assets to beneficiaries. NOTE: Settlors can be Trustees in this scenario, and Beneficiaries can be changed. Absolute Trust: Trustees have complete control until the Beneficiary comes of age, then from age 18, the Beneficiary will have full control over the assets. NOTE: Beneficiaries cannot be changed. Excess Income Trust: Made of individual's excess income (money remaining after living expenses are deducted). NOTE: This kind of Trust has many advantages over placing these funds into an ISA, as, assuming rules are met, Trusts are free of IHT and don’t have a cap. There are various rules, allowances and options with Trusts, so it is imperative to seek advice from a regulated financial adviser to understand what options are best suited to your and your family’s financial circumstances. We can help you to weigh up your options and plan for your short-term and longer-term goals for your loved ones.
The levels and bases of taxation and reliefs from taxation can change at any time. The value of any tax relief depends on individual circumstances. Trusts are not regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority.

Gresford & District Community Library
By JAN JONES, Gresford and District Community Library The library is a cool, shaded, space, which can be a problem in cold weather, but it’s been a blessing in these very hot summers we’ve been having. As you read this in September perhaps we will have had some much needed rain - fingers crossed! Rain or shine, hot weather or cold, our library is here to serve its community. All the libraries in North Wales are linked. If you’re a member of one, you’re a member of all, and that includes our volunteer-run community library. We can return your books from other libraries – just bring them to us and we’ll send them back; it’s that simple. If we’re closed just pop them in our dropbox by the front door and we’ll deal with them. We use the same library system as every other library in Wales. We keep our book stock fresh by utilising the fabulous books you donate to us each and every week, but if there’s a book you want, which we haven’t got on our shelves, we can order it for you from one of the 60 or so libraries in North
Wales. That’s a lot of libraries, and an awful lot of books at your disposal! They usually come very quickly, brought by the library van which visits us every Wednesday. Of course, if you wish, you can go online and request books yourself. You can also renew books online, and download or request eBooks and audio books - plus magazines and these are all completely free. If you’re not sure how to access the online services just call in and ask us – we’ll be happy to help you. In addition to all this, you can come and print things in the library and we also have a laminator. We have full fibre broadband and laptops you can use - or you can bring your own device if you prefer. For the little ones, we have Craft Club on the first Saturday of the month and Lego Club on the last Saturday - Crochet Club is on the third one. If you have a group that needs to meet, we might be able to help you. So please come and have a look at what your library has to offer – we’d love to meet you: Tues/Thurs 2-5pm & Saturdays 10am-1pm.

Legal Advice By ULIA CHOUDHRY Be prepared - if you want to avoid the pitfalls of life and death!
Have you prepared for the unexpected and covered everything required to ensure your wishes are carried out when you have gone? And have you done all you can to make coping with the consequences of your death as easy as possible for your loved ones? All too often people have not – and all too often that only becomes evident after someone dies. For example, a couple who think they won’t need probate but then the survivor finds it is required just because their deceased spouse held more than £5,000 in premium bonds; a couple who leave everything to each other and the surviving spouse doesn’t think to make a new Will after their partner dies; a debilitating accident that leaves no one able to access the victim’s money, pay their bills or speak on their behalf about medical treatment. Yet there are a few simple steps you can take right now to address all these things. Firstly, write a legally valid Will and appoint executors to handle your estate, and, if you have young or disabled children, appoint
guardians for them. Include your funeral wishes in your Will and check regularly whether any circumstances have changed that might mean your Will needs updating. Next, set up and register a Lasting Power of Attorney now for both your property and financial affairs, and your health and welfare. This will allow people you trust to make decisions, pay bills etc on your behalf immediately if you should later lose capacity to make decisions yourself. Nominate a beneficiary for your pension fund, if that is relevant, and compile a file containing provider contact details and account numbers for your current bank accounts, pensions, insurance policies, water, energy, telephone and broadband and recurring digital subscriptions. Update as, when and if you change providers. Make a separate list of passwords and pin numbers and inform someone you trust of the safe place where they are stored along with original copies of your Will, property deeds, birth and marriage certificates and anything of a sensitive nature. Finally, seeking legal advice from a solicitor will ensure the all-important undeniable validity of your Will and LPAs.

Hugh Jones & Ross Shepherd Councillors for Rossett Drain clearance A number of residents have made enquiries about whether the drains and gullies will be ready for when the wet weather returns. Officers ensure all gullies and drains are checked and cleared on a rolling cycle throughout the borough so hopefully they will be efficient and do their job when needed. The recording system is automatic and based on vehicle trackers. Llay Road North Wales police have been asked to carry out speed checks on this particular road. Numerous residents have been in touch sharing their concerns about many vehicles travelling in excess of the 40mph speed limit. Trevalyn, Burton to Wrexham Bus Route Transport Officers are currently ensuring bus stops on this route are clearly visible and marked. They are also undertaking a review of stops and looking at adding further stops. Following representations, we have supported the process for an additional stop to be located on the Chester Road near to Broad Lane. The increased service timetable for this route is now in operation.
crops and this is irresponsible behaviour. We have again asked wardens to make regular checks and have asked them to prosecute those dog owners in breech. Underpass Vandalism Unfortunately graffiti has once again appeared in the underpass off Burton Road. We have contacted Street Scene Services to attend and remove this as soon as possible. Former Griffin Inn The new tenants of the former public house have submitted a planning application to install illuminated signage to the property. We have both objected to this as it will have detrimental effect to nearby properties and will not be inkeeping with the rural location. Enforcement officers continue to monitor the use of the caravans on the caravan club site and enforcement action will be taken. Daisy Lane Enforcement notices have been served on the occupants of the unlawful site on Daisy Lane.
Dog Fouling The problem of dog fouling continues to be an issue in parts of the village, including on the footpaths through the fields. Dog faeces can cause damage to animals and

Beryl Blackmore Councillor for Marford & Hoseley Hello, well, I’m not sure where to start. I am sure the majority of us are not coming up roses but wilting wallflowers, what a summer! One we have longed for BUT too much of a good thing. Our hearts go out to the firefighters and farmers. I was told just this week that farmers are selling cows due to no grass to eat. Waking up and looking out of the window gives a feeling of living in a desert. As a resident in Gresford, the state of the Lake is heartbreaking - more so for the dedicated residents who look after it, day in and out. Climate change? I am sure we all hope it will come back to some normality soon as it is such a village feature. Our village’s out of school childcare has been very busy, looking at Facebook, with lots of fun activities. All credit to the staff, and I am told the children have been amazing too. Council meetings have included an Asylum Seekers workshop. I also attended a meeting called by Wrexham Childcare Team and Social Services, which has so many branches, Care Homes, Respite Centres and many projects covering Children and Families. I am a member of a Rota Team who visit Care Homes and Children's Centres, and I find this area very rewarding. I have been in Childcare long enough (60 plus years), to have a good idea of what I am checking and looking for. Since finishing work in Childcare, but staying on as a Trustee, keeps me on my toes, I have added Social Care to my interests - in particular, the over 70s. I have taken on Vice Chair of 'Safeguarding, Community, Wellbeing, Crime and Disorder' on Wrexham Council. Being involved in the Caffi/Exercise Group in Gresford Methodist Church aimed at over 60s gives me a good insight into the many problems we can expect with old age. But, our motto is: 'No

Matter How you Feel Get Up, Dress Up, Show Up and Never Give Up’. We proved that at the end of June with a cruise to Norway, ably assisted to book by Sarah and Delmar Travel. Being positive, we have booked another - more than 12 months away but we all intend to still be here! A rolling programme has started to resurface roads and footpaths, and Part 1 has started. Marford and Hoseley, I understand, is in Part 2, and I hope it won't be too long for us to wait for some TLC. I am continuing to add roads and footpaths as you contact me to complain, and quite rightly, as many are well past their sell by date! I am always checking Marford Hill and I ask residents to help me. Whether you front the hill or back onto the hill, please check hedges and trees as soon as September sets in. I guess this very dry weather may cause a weakness in many larger tree branches, so check if you need to cut back any overhanging branches, please. I have not had success with enquiries about the Trevor Arms, but a resident, who seems to know the best contacts, tells me it is under offer. I do hope so! I also offer a warm welcome to the new Head at The Rofft School, Matt Holmes, may he have many happy years. Keep reporting problems and I will try my best.

Jeremy Kent, Councillor for Gresford, & Mayor of Wrexham As we move into September, it has been another busy summer in Gresford. Although my role as Mayor continues to keep me busy across the county borough, I remain very much focused on the issues affecting our village and getting out and about meeting residents. Gresford News Over the summer I have been out delivering copies of my Gresford News around the village. It has been a great opportunity to catch up with residents, hear what is important to them and, of course, have a good chat along the way. I always enjoy being out and about in the village, and these conversations are an important part of being a local councillor. Not every issue can be solved immediately, but knowing what residents are experiencing helps me raise the right issues with the council and other organisations. IMAGE Scarecrow Festival A huge well done to everyone involved in this year’s IMAGE Scarecrow Festival. It was fantastic to see so much creativity and effort going into the displays, with residents, families and local organisations getting involved.
Schools are back With the new school year about to be underway, I would once again ask everyone to please take extra care around the school at drop-off and pick-up times. I continue to work with the school and council officers on the parking and road safety issues in the area. I know this can be a frustrating time for residents and parents alike, but a little consideration can make a significant difference. Please avoid blocking driveways, junctions and pavements, and think about the impact where vehicles are parked. Most importantly, please remember that children are moving around the area and their safety has to come first. In closing As always, if there is an issue you would like to raise or something you think needs attention, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. Your feedback and local knowledge remain invaluable in helping me represent Gresford.
Events like this are a great example of what makes Gresford such a special place to live. My thanks go to the organisers, volunteers and everyone who took part. I hope the event continues to grow from strength to strength.
