450+ Enjoy Wrexham Walking Festival

Despite some mixed weather, over 450 people joined the 21 walks during the nine day Wrexham Walking Festival this year. A wide range of free guided walks featured the beauty, heritage and landscapes of Wrexham and the surrounding area. From a tour of the city celebrating its Year of Wonder to gentle countryside strolls and more challenging hikes in the hills, there was something to suit all ages and abilities. With participants from all over NE Wales and as far away as Cardiff and Cornwall, it reflects the attraction of the area and people’s enthusiasm for getting outside and exploring – whatever the weather. And there are more activities to come with evening walks every Friday until mid-August.

Walkabout Wrexham also offers a regular programme of free guided walks all year round. For details of all the walks, visit their website, www.walksinwrexham.com.

Painting with Purpose

Local artist, Laura Evison, from Regent House of Flowers, has created "Calon y Bannau" (Heart of the Beacon) in memory of her partner, Mick Smith, inspired by his favourite view from Pen y Fan. Mick sadly took his own life in February 2021 after living with PTSD and mental health challenges. Walking in the Brecon Beacons, particularly around Pen y Fan, brought him comfort and was his safe, happy place - his forever home.

Laura is raising funds for SSAFA and Brecon Mountain Rescue by offering the chance to win a limited first edition A3 framed print, worth £80. Entries cost £2, with all proceeds going to the charities. To enter, donate via Laura's JustGiving page, https://tinyurl.com/4ays8n46, then email a screenshot of your donation to lausy8@hotmail.com to receive your ticket numbers. The winner will be drawn on 27 September 2026.

Deadline for September issue is 10 August. Email your local story to: vicky@essentialsmag.co.uk

Stori Brymbo Now Open!

At the heart of Stori Brymbo is an incredible 314 million year-old Fossil Forest: an internationally significant site that is drawing scientific interest from across the world and hidden beneath the landscape of Brymbo’s former coal, iron, and steel industry. It's a place where ancient tropical forests meet industrial heritage and remarkable discoveries sit alongside the stories of the generations of people who lived and worked here.

But Stori Brymbo is about much more than what happened millions of years ago.

We are a community-led attraction and not-for-profit organisation. We have been created with the volunteers, local people, local businesses and local artists at its heart. Everything we are doing is designed to celebrate the people and creativity of our area.

When you arrive, you won’t feel like a visitor; you’ll feel like part of the community. You can explore the Fossil Forest, discover fascinating exhibitions, and uncover the heritage stories that shaped Brymbo's landscape.

After that, you can settle into our coffeehouse with a hot drink and food made with locally sourced ingredients, some of which are grown in our kitchen garden. It's the perfect place to come together.

There's always going to be something new to see as well. Our gallery will have

a changing programme of exhibitions showcasing talented local Wrexham artists, plus there’ll be a packed calendar of events, workshops, and family activities so every visit will look a little different.

In fact, one visit probably won't be enough! We’ve designed an annual pass (for the same price as a general admission ticket) and membership options so you don’t have to squeeze everything into one visit.

So come and discover a place unlike anywhere else in the UK. Explore a 314 million year-old fossil forest. Enjoy great local food and drink. Meet local people. Hear real stories from times gone by. Experience new exhibitions and events. And most importantly, become part of a community that's proud of it’s past and excited about its future.

It’s been a long journey to restore this fascinating place, and we are FINALLY ready to share it with you.

New Website, Better Access

Nightingale House Hospice has launched a brand new website designed to make it easier than ever for local people to access information, support and hospice services. Created with patients, families, carers, healthcare professionals and supporters in mind, the new website is simple to navigate, mobile-friendly and accessible, helping visitors find the information quickly.

Self-referral process

One of the most significant developments is the introduction of a straightforward self-referral process. People living with a life-limiting illness, as well as their families and carers, can now explore available services and refer themselves directly for support online. Healthcare professionals also benefit from improved referral pathways, helping patients access care more quickly and efficiently.

Many people are surprised to learn that hospice care is about much more than endof-life care. Nightingale House offers a wide range of services, including specialist inpatient care, wellbeing programmes, rehabilitation, complementary therapies, family support, bereavement services and outpatient clinics, all designed to help people live as well as possible for as long as possible.

Lauren Emberton, Chief Executive Officer at Nightingale House Hospice, said: "We know that taking the first step to contact a hospice can sometimes feel daunting. Our new website has been

designed to make that process as simple and welcoming as possible, helping people understand the support available and access it when they need it. If you or someone you love is living with a lifelimiting illness, you don't have to wait for someone else to make a referral. Our new self-referral process makes it easier than ever to get in touch and find out how we can help."

The website also provides information about fundraising events, volunteering opportunities, gifts in wills and ways to donate, helping supporters continue to make a difference to local hospice care.

The launch forms part of Nightingale House Hospice's ongoing commitment to improving accessibility and ensuring that people across its catchment area, including those living in rural communities, can access the support they need.

To find out more, visit www.nightingalehouse.co.uk

Did you know? You can now self-refer to Nightingale House Hospice. If you are living with a life-limiting illness and would like to find out what support is available, visit the website or speak to the Patient Flow team. Early access to hospice services can help improve quality of life, wellbeing and support for both patients and families.

Business Spotlight

Small Advert; Big Results!

For many local businesses, the question isn't "How big should my advert be?" but "Does it work?"

For Rich Jones, owner of Gresford Man and Van, the answer has been a resounding ‘yes!’. Despite advertising with just a 1/8-page advert, Rich has continued to receive a steady stream of genuine, good quality enquiries from readers of EssentialsMAG More importantly, those enquiries have translated into real, repeat customers. "The advert might only be small, but it consistently brings in quality leads. People recognise the business from EssentialsMAG and often mention they've seen me in the magazine before getting in touch," says Rich.

He believes one of the biggest strengths of EssentialsMAG is the consistency it offers. Appearing month after month, almost since Rich started the business in 2020, has helped keep Gresford Man and Van visible to local households, reassuring customers that the business is well established, reliable and ready to serve the local community. When someone suddenly needs a house move, furniture collection or clearance service, they're far more likely to remember

a business they've seen regularly than one they've only come across once online.

Rich concludes, "I'd happily recommend EssentialsMAG to anyone starting or growing a local business. It's helped me reach the right customers, generated quality enquiries, and has become an important part of my marketing. It simply works."

The case proves that successful advertising isn't about having the biggest advert on the page - it's about reaching the right audience, consistently. Even a modest 1/8-page advert can generate an excellent return when it's seen every month by engaged local readers.

Wrexham Birdwatchers Club Latest News

It’s holiday time and a lot of us will be making our way to the seaside. Others avoiding it. Most garden birds will have fledged their broods by now. However, nearby we have the Dee Estuary, leading to the Irish Sea. Along that coast young waders and gulls with the adults can be seen as well as colonies of terns, sometimes called ‘sea swallows’. All five British species breed here, or in Anglesey, in the summer.

The Sandwich Tern is the biggest and has a black beak and has a punk style head. The Common and Arctic Terns are very similar, so similar in fact that observers refer to them as ‘Commic’ Terns for ease. The Common can also be seen on inland waters. Both have a glossy dark cap. To confuse things further, the very rare, Roseate Tern, is similar, but instead of the scarlet red bill with black tip of the Common or blood red bill of the Arctic, it has a mainly black bill with a pleasing pinky tinge to its chest in breeding plumage.

Confused? Don’t worry - you can visit the North Wales Wildlife Trust site in Cemlyn Bay overlooking a tern colony where wardens will be more than willing to point out the differences from the nearby shingles and perhaps you’ll work out your own way of identifying them.

However, I want to give a special mention to the fifth species - the Little Tern. It’s smaller than the others and has a yellow beak with

a black tip and a white patch above its bill in front of its black glossy cap so it is easy to recognise. It’s also our second rarest breeding sea bird in the UK and we have it breeding nearby at Gronant and the RSPB site at Point of Air, near Talacre. Breeding birds are vulnerable to predation. Last year, crows ensured no young birds fledged at Point of Air, so this year RSPB have gathered a team of volunteers to watch over their site from dawn to dusk. You can’t visit the colony but you can get good views from the RSPB hide across the bay to the colony. Gronant has a larger population.

The North Wales Little Tern Group has been established to help protect this colony in Wales, in partnership with Denbighshire Countryside Service. A walk to the beach at Gronant, especially at high tide, should reward you with good views of the colony. These are the last breeding Little Terns in Wales.

On holiday, keep your eyes and ears open and you might be lucky to see an acrobatic bird continually calling and sounding cross.

Our next outing: Friday 7 August: Evening Walk to Shotton & Burton Marsh (meet at Gresford Lake Car Park at 6:30pm).

Gardening Tips and Advice

August - Sultry Late Summer

August is usually one of the hottest months of the year - making watering essential. Try to use grey water wherever possible, especially as water butts may be running low if it has been a dry summer. August is traditionally holiday-time, so you might need to enlist the help of friends and family to look after the garden while you are away. When you are at home, take the time to prune Wisteria and summer-flowering shrubs such as Lavender, once they've finished flowering.

TOP 10 JOBS TO DO IN THE GARDEN THIS MONTH

1. Prune Wisteria.

2. Don’t delay pruning summer fruits trained as restricted forms.

3. Deadhead flowering plants regularly.

4. Water! Particularly containers, and new plants, preferably with grey recycled water or stored rainwater.

5. Collect seed from garden plants.

6. Harvest sweetcorn and other vegetables as they become ready.

7. Continue cutting out old fruited canes on raspberries.

8. Lift and pot up rooted strawberry runners.

9. Keep ponds and water features topped up.

10. Feed the soil with green manures.

Grilled Mackerel Fillet with ‘Sauce Vierge’

Mackerel peaks in British waters through July and August, when shoals gather close to shore and the fish are at their fattest, freshest and most flavourful. It’s a gift of the season: abundant, sustainably caught, nutrient‑rich, and still one of the most inexpensive fish on the market. Its naturally high levels of omega‑3s make it a healthy choice, while its bold flavour stands up beautifully to grilling and bright Mediterranean sauces like Sauce Vierge.

INGREDIENTS:

4 mackerel fillets, pin‑boned

2 tbsp olive oil

Sea salt & cracked black pepper

1 lemon, halved

FOR THE SAUCE VIERGE:

3 ripe tomatoes, de-seeded & finely diced

1 small shallot, minced

1 garlic clove, finely grated

4 tbsp extra‑virgin olive oil

Juice of ½ lemon

Small handful fresh basil, chopped

Small handful fresh parsley, chopped

1 tbsp capers (optional but excellent)

Sea salt & pepper

METHOD:

Prepare the fish

Pat the mackerel fillets dry and brush lightly with olive oil. Season generously with sea salt and pepper.

Make the Sauce Vierge

In a bowl, combine tomatoes, shallot, garlic, olive oil, lemon juice, herbs and capers. Season to taste. Let it sit for 10 minutes so the flavours marry.

Grill the mackerel

Heat a grill or griddle pan until very hot. Place the fillets skin‑side down and cook for 3-4 minutes until the skin crisps. Flip and cook for 1-2 minutes more. Squeeze over a little lemon juice as they come off the heat.

Serve

Spoon the Sauce Vierge generously over each fillet. Serve with grilled sourdough, new potatoes or a simple green salad.

Seasonal Treats in August

August is one of the best months of the year for fresh, seasonal food. With summer in full swing, gardens, allotments and farm shops are overflowing with colourful fruit, vegetables and fragrant herbs, making it the perfect time to enjoy nature's harvest.

Berries & Fruit

August is berry season at its very best. Sweet strawberries, juicy raspberries and plump blackberries are all in abundance and are delicious eaten straight from the punnet, added to summer desserts or turned into homemade jams and preserves.

Stone fruits are also at their peak. Peaches, nectarines and plums are wonderfully juicy and full of flavour, whether enjoyed on their own, added to fruit salads or used in both sweet and savoury dishes.

Towards the end of the month, the first apples and pears begin to appear too, bringing a taste of the coming autumn.

Vegetables

Fresh peas, including garden peas and sugar snap peas, are wonderfully sweet at this time of year. They're perfect eaten raw, lightly steamed or stirred into salads, pasta dishes and risottos.

Courgettes are another August favourite. Their versatility makes them ideal for grilling, roasting, spiralising or adding to soups, stews and stir-fries.

Leafy greens such as lettuce, spinach and rocket continue to thrive, providing the perfect base for fresh summer salads. Sweetcorn is also at its very best, with tender, juicy kernels that are delicious grilled on the barbecue, boiled or tossed into salads and salsas.

Herbs

Fresh herbs are flourishing throughout August, adding wonderful flavour to seasonal cooking. Basil is perfect for homemade pesto, pasta dishes and classic tomato salads, while mint brings a refreshing lift to drinks, desserts and savoury dishes alike.

Alyn Family Doctors Latest News

Accidents and medical emergencies can happen at any time, whether at home, at work or out in the community. Having a basic understanding of first aid can make a significant difference while waiting for professional medical help. You don't need to be a healthcare professional - knowing a few simple steps can help keep someone safe and, in some situations, even save a life.

The first step is recognising when an emergency requires immediate action.

If someone is unconscious, not breathing normally, experiencing chest pain, showing signs of a stroke, or has severe bleeding, call 999 straight away. While help is on the way, follow the instructions of the emergency call handler, who can provide guidance on lifesaving first aid, including CPR where necessary.

Burns should be treated promptly by stopping the burning process and cooling the affected area under cool running water for at least 20 minutes. Remove any jewellery or loose clothing near the burn unless it is stuck to the skin. Once cooled, loosely cover the burn with cling film or a clean, non-fluffy dressing. Avoid using ice or creams, and never burst any blisters. Urgent medical advice from the local Accident and Emergency department should be sought for large, deep, chemical or electrical burns.

If someone is bleeding, apply firm pressure to the wound using a clean dressing or cloth

and maintain pressure until the bleeding stops. If blood soaks through the dressing, place another on top without removing the first. Call 999 immediately if the bleeding is severe or cannot be controlled.

For a nosebleed, ask the person to sit down, lean forward and pinch the soft part of their nose continuously for 10-15 minutes. Leaning forward helps prevent blood from being swallowed.

Sprains and strains can often be managed by resting the injured area, applying an ice pack wrapped in a cloth, using a compression bandage where appropriate, and elevating the affected limb. However, if there is severe pain, significant swelling, or the person is unable to bear weight on the injury, seek medical assessment via a minor injuries unit or A&E.

Basic first aid knowledge provides confidence as well as practical skills, enabling you to remain calm and respond effectively in an emergency.

You never know when these simple actions could make a real difference to the life of a friend, family member, or even a stranger.

A Trip Down ‘Memory Lane’

Have you noticed how certain adverts or shop displays can instantly transport you back in time? One minute you're picking up a loaf of bread, and the next you're remembering family holidays at the seaside, your favourite childhood sweets (and their price!) or the excitement of hearing the ice cream van on a sunny afternoon.

That's nostalgia at work – and businesses know just how powerful it can be.

As we head into August, there's something about this time of year that naturally makes us look back. The school holidays are in full swing; we're trying to squeeze every last drop out of summer, and before we know it, the "Back to School" signs start appearing. It's a season that's full of memories, and many brands cleverly tap into those feelings.

You might spot a favourite biscuit in its retro packaging, a television advert using a song you haven't heard in years, or clothes inspired by fashions from the '80s or '90s. Suddenly, you're smiling without quite knowing why. That's because our happiest memories often come with a warm feeling, and when a product reminds us of those moments, we're naturally drawn to it.

There's nothing underhand about it - it's simply good marketing. Businesses understand that we're not just buying products; we're often buying the feelings that come with them.

I know I'm not alone in being tempted by something simply because it reminds me of my childhood. Whether it's an old-fashioned Dandelion and Burdock drink, a classic board game or a familiar chocolate bar, sometimes it's lovely to revisit those memories. And that's absolutely OK! The trick is simply to pause for a second before you buy. Ask yourself, "Am I buying this because I really want it, or because it's brought back a happy memory?" Sometimes the answer is both, and there's nothing wrong with treating yourself every now and then.

Once you start noticing nostalgia marketing, you'll see it everywhere. It's actually quite fun spotting the little touches that advertisers use to make us smile.

So, the next time an advert takes you back to building sandcastles, eating fish and chips on the promenade or long summer evenings in the garden, enjoy the moment. Those memories are part of what makes us who we are.

And if you happen to pop that packet of retro sweets into your shopping basket… well, I promise I won't tell anyone!

Is Your Pension Under Attack?

The rules around Inheritance Tax (IHT) and Pension Death Benefits are changing very significantly in April 2027. It’s important to really understand these rule changes and what it means for you and your loved ones. We will look at a couple of key questions that clear up any doubts about what this means for your estate one day – and then what you can do about it.

What are the current rules this Tax Year? IHT is the tax your loved ones will pay on the estate you leave behind when you pass away If your total wealth is over certain figures. Your estate is made up of all of your assets, including property (in the UK and abroad), cash in the bank, investments, shares, National Savings products and personal items such as jewellery/cars. The big thing missing from this list currently is pension funds.

Each of us has a ‘Nil Rate Band’ of £325,000 that we can leave to anyone tax free. If you have kids/grandkids as beneficiaries and own your own home – you have an extra Principal Residence Relief of £175,000 each. So £500,000 for individuals with family and £1M is the maximum allowance in total.

Any value over £500,000 for a single person or £1M for a couple when the second of a married couple passes away is taxed up to 40%.

There are additional rules for estates over £2M, please call me and ask me about those!

What is changing in 2027?

After next April, anyone passing away will see the value of any Defined Contribution Pension (where you usually get an annual statement of value), added to their numbers.

Many more people will be ‘caught’ when adding pensions in - and leave their estate to pay tax largely unnecessarily.

What can we do to protect your estate and the funds left over for your loved ones?

Here are just some of the things you can do:

• Gifts and The 7-Year

You can give away £3,000 in gifts each tax year completely tax-free. Larger gifts made while you are alive are generally free of IHT. If you survive for seven years after making the gift. You can also give £250 to as many other people as you wish (not to the recipient of the £3,000 though).

• Lump Sum Gifts

You can give away as much as you wish as a lump sum in addition to the above. If you live for seven years thereafter, the gift will be exempt and outside of your estate. A lot of Grandparents/parents consider this, but sometimes leave this too late in their planning!

Plan early and know your options, we would suggest.

There’s no Inheritance Tax to pay on any gifts or estate left between Spouses/Civil Partners.

• Setting up a family Trust

You can gift into a Trust, and keep more control of your capital, choose beneficiaries at the outset, and change them as you go along. So, maybe your own children now could be preferred - you could change this to the grandchildren perhaps in later life, as you wish. A specialist area where we can help.

Again, the ‘seven year rule’ applies for Gifts into most Trusts.

• Gifting from income that you don’t need

This is often overlooked, and is an excellent opportunity. If you have income in excess of your needs (includes State Pensions, occupational pensions, most investment income, interest and rental income) you can gift your surplus away entirely tax free. The ‘win’ here is that the ‘seven year rule’ does not apply. How good is that? An immediate tax saving.

There are many opportunities available to reduce inheritance tax. Taking professional advice based on your own individual circumstances is recommended. It is crucial to understand what is changing and how we can help you combat these changes in a smart and calculated way.

The levels and bases of taxation, and reliefs from taxation, can change at any time. The value of any tax relief is dependent on individual circumstances.

Trusts are not regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority.

Andrew Ranger MP Member of Parliament for Wrexham

It has now been two years since you elected me as your MP, and it continues to be a privilege to represent Wrexham. I am always keen to hear what people think about issues that affect them. Therefore, my next ‘Voice of Wrexham’ event will be on the topic of the ‘high street’. It will take place on Saturday 8 August at 11am in Wrexham City Centre. If you are interested in attending, you can book in via my website or by contacting my office using the details below. Full details of the venue will then be sent through to you.

The summer is always a busy period of events, and I have been lucky to attend several that really reflect the wonderful community we have across Wrexham. The Rhosddu Fun Day brought so many people together with music, stalls, and food. Up in Minera at the site of the former lead mines, I was delighted to open a series of new walking trails for visitors to enjoy, they showcase just how nature has taken back the area in terms of woodland, grassland and so much wildlife. I met a number of young people who had undertaken a ‘Get into Lifeguarding’ course thanks to the King’s Trust and Freedom Leisure, and now they have an impressive set of skills to take them forward on their next steps into a career, as well as to look after others.

We also have some exciting developments here in Wrexham, particularly linked to our heritage and tourism. I was so pleased to attend the opening of Stori Brymbo, a project which is the culmination of an incredible

effort to harness our industrial heritage, engage and bring on board the local community as well as take advantage of a story, millions of years in the making. It was brilliant to see the finished site having had a sneak preview in the early days of construction last year and I know they cannot wait to share their discoveries with the wider public.

Wrexham’s proud links with the armed forces were brought into focus in June, firstly with the D-Day anniversary and then at the end of the month with the Falklands War commemorations. I joined Welsh Guardsmen and their families at St Giles’ for the Falklands memorial service and wreath laying at Bodhyfryd. This year is also poignant as Wrexham is now home to a permanent memorial to those Welsh Guardsmen and attached personnel who lost their lives in Operation Herrick 10 and 16 in Afghanistan, a permanent reminder of those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Legal Advice

Be prepared - if you want to avoid the pitfalls of life and death!

Have you prepared for the unexpected and covered everything required to ensure your wishes are carried out when you have gone? And have you done all you can to make coping with the consequences of your death as easy as possible for your loved ones? All too often people have not – and all too often that only becomes evident after someone dies.

For example, a couple who think they won’t need probate but then the survivor finds it is required just because their deceased spouse held more than £5,000 in premium bonds; a couple who leave everything to each other and the surviving spouse doesn’t think to make a new Will after their partner dies; a debilitating accident that leaves no one able to access the victim’s money, pay their bills or speak on their behalf about medical treatment.

Yet there are a few simple steps you can take right now to address all these things. Firstly, write a legally valid Will and appoint executors to handle your estate, and, if you have young or disabled children, appoint

guardians for them. Include your funeral wishes in your Will and check regularly whether any circumstances have changed that might mean your Will needs updating. Next, set up and register a Lasting Power of Attorney now for both your property and financial affairs, and your health and welfare. This will allow people you trust to make decisions, pay bills etc on your behalf immediately if you should later lose capacity to make decisions yourself.

Nominate a beneficiary for your pension fund, if that is relevant, and compile a file containing provider contact details and account numbers for your current bank accounts, pensions, insurance policies, water, energy, telephone and broadband and recurring digital subscriptions. Update as, when and if you change providers.

Make a separate list of passwords and pin numbers and inform someone you trust of the safe place where they are stored along with original copies of your Will, property deeds, birth and marriage certificates and anything of a sensitive nature.

Finally, seeking legal advice from a solicitor will ensure the all-important undeniable validity of your Will and LPAs.
