The first day of a new school year is always something special, marking new beginnings for children and parents alike. It’s good we can all have a fresh start, some children really need this and I expect some adults need it too. A new school year, new opportunities, new challenges, meanwhile forgetting the negative elements of the last couple of years and putting them behind us. Childhood inevitably encompasses numerous rites of passage and children are naturally excited about getting older and reaching new milestones. I generally find that children are natural optimists: they live in the here and now, and their lives are very much rooted in the present. So my approach at this time of year has always been to tap into that positive energy and use it to help them get the most from the whole school run – homework - fun cycle. After all, I need the routine as much as they do! Have a great month! All the best, Vicky Heathfield

After being given the devastating prognosis, Aria’s family quickly set about finding alternative forms of treatment - and heard about a pioneering drug, ONC201, which has shown in trials to kill cancer cells with a specific genetic mutation in the tumour. As it’s not available on the NHS, a GoFundMe page was set up with a target of raising £60,000.

Wrexham Garden Waste Collection

The easiest way to pay for the service is online but if that isn’t possible, people can call Streetscene to make a card payment, though it is likely that they experience a wait. Wrexham Council highly recommends paying for the service online where possible (www.wrexham.gov.uk). The council will also not accept cash or cheques.

Everyone who signs up will receive a sticker pack with a new sticker, which should be displayed on your bin lid from September.

Aria Vs DIPG

To help Aria’s cause, the Wrexham AFC co-owners pledged £10,000 each on the ‘Aria Vs DIPG’ GoFundMe page (www.gofundme.com/f/aria-vs-dipg). This marks another charitable act by the duo, who also donated £10,000 to the Stillbirth & Neonatal Death Society earlier this year after Wrexham player Jordan Davies, and his partner Kelsey Edwards’, child was stillborn.

Hollywood stars and Wrexham AFC co-owners Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds have

once again gone above and beyond with huge donations to help a young Wrexham girl in her battle with a rare form of brain cancer. On her third birthday, Aria Hodgkiss, from Rhostyllen, was tragically diagnosed with Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG) - a tumour in her brain stem. The brain stem is used to regulate balance, breathing, and heart rate, which means the tumour cannot be removed.

Wrexham Council is urging residents to renew their garden waste collections. The charge for 2022/23 remains frozen at £25 per green bin per year, and the service runs from Monday 5th September 2022 until Friday 1st September 2023.

Any unwanted garden waste bins can be removed on request. Those who do not want their garden waste collected can take their waste to one of the household waste recycling centres (free of charge). Alternatively, people can compost garden waste at home.

Rossett Church will be celebrating it’s 130th Anniversary on the weekend of 29th and 30th October 2022. They are on the lookout for photographs and memorabilia for events held at the Church over the years, especially weddings, social gatherings and leaflets. If you can help, please email copies to the Vicar at: vicarofllay@gmail.com, or message the Christ Church, Rossett Facebook page: @christchurchrossett

Coffee by the Lake

Barrington’s Coffee horsebox is parked by Gresford Lake on Saturdays and Sundays (or sometimes just behind the Scout hut) from around 10am to 4pm. Gail bakes all the cakes herself and, as they want the business to be as ethical as possible, all the cups, lids and sleeves are plant-based, therefore, fully compostable. Gail told us: “It’s so lovely to do something in the village and the reaction and support has been amazing. It's so reassuring to have so many people returning week-on-week enjoying a chat at the hatch. It's hard work, but when we're laughing with our customers, it feels very communal and nothing makes us happier than to see groups of strangers chatting with our coffee cups in their hands!”

Pulford Painters Art group is a long-established social art group who meet in Pulford Village Hall every Wednesday morning between 9.00am and 12.30pm. If you are interested in coming along, please contact Chris on 01244 630137 for more information. Beginners and all abilities are very welcome.

Gresford residents, Gail and Kevin Caswell-Jones, long held an ambition to run their own mobile coffee shop selling a really good coffee, tea and homemade cakes. This dream became a reality in June when they collected their converted horsebox-style trailer.

books we think we can sell on our sale trolleys and at local events, and we then sell as many as possible to online book purchasing sites. Books we cannot deal with in other ways are put into skips provided by the charity World of Books; they pay us 5p a kilo for the contents. World of Books’ mission statement is: To do good in the world, to encourage sustainability, to reuse and recycle, and to support people and communities. They sell our donated books online and save carbon emissions by keeping books in use for longer and by recycling them properly. They make sure that the final stage of the journey for our donated books is to be recycled to make paper to produce… more books!! We use the same library system as every other library in North Wales, and we provide the same services. We can order books from other libraries and return books borrowed elsewhere. If we’re closed, just pop your books in the dropbox by the front door – we’ll do the rest.

The library is thriving – thanks to your support. The many books you donate help us to raise the funds we need to keep us afloat, and we’re very grateful for them. Keep them coming! Any kind of book, in any Peoplecondition.oftenask what happens to the books they donate to us. We have a ‘virtuous circle’ process in relation to our donated books. In fact, there are 2,000 species in the Galapagos archipelago that are found nowhere else in the world.

The

I have to admit to feeling somewhat humble to be following in Charles Darwin’s footsteps - and to think he came from just up the road in Shrewsbury! His contribution to naturalism and his theory of evolution are acknowledged in many ways in the archipelago: from research centres to several species of creatures to street Inames.wasstruck by how tame much of the wildlife is: sea lions, birds, tortoises, iguanas, turtles were all so relaxed in the company of humans that it made our tours even more enjoyable. And the fullyqualified naturalists who accompany the tours are not only extremely knowledgeable but also very entertaining. There are so many highlights from my trip that I don't know where to start!

The expedition ship I travelled on has been purpose-built for the Galapagos Islands and was, in my view, the best way to experience this destination. A combination of understated luxury complemented by eco-friendly natural surroundings and kind, caring, professional staff who enhance every minute of your stay through their expertise made this a holiday to remember.

Giant tortoises chewing their way through lush growth or keeping cool in a shallow pond.

The Galapagos Islands are one of the few places in the world that remain relatively untouched by human exploitation. Having said that, tourism is welcomed because it makes a valuable contribution towards conservation programmes and research. However, there are strict rules that each tour company and visitors to the Galapagos National Park must abide by in order to protect the archipelago’s fragile ecosystem and preserve the pristine condition of each diverse island. I cruised on the Celebrity Flora which took me to all the islands comprising ‘The Outer Loop’ which provided at least two excursions every day, which involved walking, snorkelling, kayaking or hiking at various levels.

‘Happy Cat Month’

According to Guinness World Records, the oldest cat ever, named Creme Puff, lived to be 38 years old!

Cats usually sleep an average of 15 hours PER day, which means that they spend about 70% of their lives sleeping! But when they’re awake we have plenty of time to enrich their lives and keep them entertained and occupied. The latest trends for 2022 include many high-tech gadgets and toys such as an interactive laser cat toy! This battery operated toy will deliver hours of fun for your cat thanks to the beam of laser it sends out in random patterns to captivate and activate your cat. Those with indoor cats can now buy an exercise wheel, similar to a hamster wheel, to help them exercise!

In the wild, the average lifespan of a cat is anywhere from two to 16 years. A house cat has a longer average lifespan of 12 to 18 years, though it’s not uncommon for domestic cats to live into their 20s.

Of course, high tech gadgets are great but remember your cat is most interested in you and will appreciate and benefit from time spent with their owner. Stay safe and healthy! Always remember to always consult your Vet if you have any concerns about your pet.

which is brought to us by the CATalyst Council to help spread education and awareness about the health, welfare and importance of companion cats. There’s a misconception that cats are incredibly selfreliant but, the truth is, they are very social animals and require the same level of attention that we give to our dogs!

Of course, if you want your cat to safely enjoy some time outdoors why not consider a cat harness and leash? This will allow your cat to explore the great outdoors and get some gentle exercise and is the perfect way to bond with your cat. Another way to help them enjoy a calm and balanced state of mind is to play music to them. There is a Bluetooth speaker you can purchase which is preloaded with calming, feline music to reduce stress or use in stressful situations such as during travel, grooming or when loud noises are present like during thunderstorms.

Keep deadheading your Dahlias and remember that the new buds are round like a button and the ones that are finished are Keeppointed!Camelias watered as the new flower buds will be forming now.

It is also a good time to plant spring flowering bulbs such as daffodils, crocus and hyacinths. There are also things you can plant in September such as Alliums and Chrysanthemums. It is time to net your pond if you have one, before the leaves start to fall and make a mess, and clean out your cold frames and greenhouse as this will keep the overwintering diseases from your plants and surfaces. I discovered Jeyes Fluid spray a couple of years ago and it made a great Rememberdifference. to take time out to enjoy your garden too.

InformationEDWARDSprovided

As I write this, we have just come through another heat-wave and gardening is made much more difficult. Remember that it is not necessary to water your lawns as grass will soon recover when we have some rain. The only time it needs to be done is if you have just planted seed, and Autumn is the best time to do this. This time of the year is a busy time for harvest in the vegetable garden, apples need picking and vegetables too as they become ready. In the fields, the blackberries are ripening and if you have a glut remember, you can freeze them and use them later. It is the time to harvest your Main-crop Potatoes and three weeks before you lift them, remember to pull or cut off the foliage, this will prevent blight spores infecting them. In September, you can divide your perennials and prune your roses after they have finished flowering. Also remember to feed and deadhead your hanging baskets. Unfortunately my basket has suffered from the heat and I am going to replant it with Violas which should last a bit longer.

During the 1980s we used to see some of those top priority birds in the Eccleston rectory garden. The last recorded breeding Hawfinches in Cheshire reared young nearby in 1990 and used to come down to drink at our garden pond. Spotted Flycatchers were regular breeders either on the outbuildings or in nestboxes and Lesser Spotted Woodpeckers could occasionally be seen in the fruit trees. On one occasion I even spotted a Ring Ousel on the back lawn. More than three quarters of the UK's butterflies are also reckoned to have declined in the last 40 years. By REVEREND HUGH LINN Late in July, I had the pleasure of spending nearly 20 minutes watching a Red Kite soaring gracefully over Burton from the comfort of my front garden. Today there are estimated to be around 10,000 Red Kites in the UK - an enormous increase since the 1950s when the total population amounted to a mere 20 pairs in mid-Wales (all thought to be descended from a single female). By 1989 there were 52 known nests in Wales, but thanks to conservation efforts and introductions from abroad, these magnificent birds are once more Forwidespread.theRed Kites theirs has been a success story, but for many other species, things are very different. The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds estimate that one in four UK bird species are under threat and of the 70 species on their ‘Red List’ 38 are rated as top priority.

As its name suggests this strikingly marked butterfly is likely to be found in gaps around hedges especially hawthorns and brambles in our country lanes. The Gresford nature reserve, Maes y Pant, has 35 butterfly species recorded including White-letter Hairstreak, Purple hairstreak,Silver-washed Fritillary and Ringlet. This reserve is a good spot for migrating warblers during September. While the summer migrants are moving out they will be replaced by visitors from the north such as Redwings and Fieldfares and a good variety of wildfowl.

Gresford Community Council works with the communities of Gresford and Marford and Hoseley to ensure they remain attractive, inclusive and safe places to live. Community Councillors are local residents who volunteer their time to help with the provision of services and to improve the local area. The Council raises a budget each year (the Precept) which is contributed from the rates paid by households to spend in the local area. Council responsibilities include the provision of footway lighting, looking after the Cemetery, school crossing patrols, children’s playgrounds, the lake and many other local facilities.

Over the last 12 months we’ve placed three new benches, and had a new path laid, in Allington Park and we’ve had the bench by the noticeboard in Marford lifted, and the footpath there repaired and extended. In the August heatwave we arranged for Hafren Dyfrdwy to top-up the lake level to avoid further fish losses; we were very grateful for their help. We spend quite a lot of money to keep the grass and the hedges in the Cemetery and Allington Park in good order. There’s currently quite a contrast between

SERVES 4 Celebrating the joyous union of flaky fish and boiled eggs, Smoked Haddock Kedgeree is just as good for lunch or supper as it is for brunch.

4 tbsp double cream lemon wedges, to serve METHOD

1 tbsp mild curry powder

Easy HaddockSmokedKedgeree

40g butter 1 tsp groundnut or vegetable oil

1 onion, finely chopped

4 tbsp flat-leaf parsley, roughly chopped

Put the haddock and bay leaf in a shallow pan and cover with cold water. Cover and simmer gently for 8-10 minutes until the fish flakes easily. Meanwhile, melt the butter and oil in a pan and cook the onion for 8-10 minutes until softened. Stir in the rice and curry powder; cook for 2 minutes. Put the fish on a plate. Pour 600ml of the poaching liquid over the rice, add a pinch of salt, cover and cook on a low heat for 8 minutes until the rice is almost tender. Peel and quarter the eggs and flake the fish into chunks. Add the peas to the rice and cook together for a further 4-5 minutes. Gently stir in the fish, most of the parsley and the cream. Season to taste and serve topped with the eggs, the remaining parsley and the lemon wedges.

200g white basmati rice

Put the eggs in a small pan, fill with boiling water, then cover and boil for 7 minutes. Drain the eggs and place in a bowl of cold water.

Last month, I launched a transport survey as an increasing number of worried constituents have contacted me about the state of roads, parking, lack of taxis, and connectivity in Wrexham. Now that we are a city, transport connectivity within Wrexham, across Wales, and cross-border with England has never been more important. We need to fully grasp the opportunities that are heading our way and capitalise on Wrexham’s new city status by meeting the transport needs of residents, local businesses, and tourists. Wrexham needs a transport structure to support the capital of North Wales. As transport issues are largely devolved to the Welsh Government, we need to send them a message! If you have not done so already, please log onto my website and fill in the ‘Transport Survey’ under ‘Surveys’. It was a real pleasure to host my second business networking event at Moneypenny’s HQ in Wrexham, alongside a guest speaker from Wrexham Council. Having held the first business networking event back in March, since then, Wrexham has gained city status and there was much to discuss at the second event in terms of economic and employment opportunities, inward investment, and growth. It was an excellent chance to meet new businesses and put businesses who do not know each other in touch with one another. During the event, we heard from businesses from across our new city and discussed how we can all harness the multitude of opportunities that are heading our way so that we can promote all that Wrexham has to offer on a national and global stage.

On the basis of information confidentially provided by the patient, the Klinik system uses artificial intelligence to assign urgency to the appointment request in a safe and consistent way. Requests are then sent to the appropriate team in the surgery to be booked in, or directed to other services, such as selfcare advice, community pharmacies or 999. After triage, all patients will be offered a choice of a face-to-face or a telephone appointment (subject to any national restrictions in place at any time) and appointments will be available according to urgency for up to six to eight weeks in advance. This means that all requests for an appointment will be treated in exactly the same way. You can also use the system to access self-care advice, send administrative requests securely to the practice and request nurse and HCA appointments. In our last column, we informed patients that our appointment system will be changing in response to patient feedback and the changing environment of healthcare as we all adapt to living with Covid-19. The new system will start on Monday 3rd October How it works All requests for an appointment will be screened by a system called Klinik. Patients can either complete an online questionnaire (on their mobile ‘phone, laptop or tablet) in a similar way to our current eConsult system or telephone the surgery to be taken through the screening questions by one of our trained Patient Advisors.

All other requests: 9.00am to 5.00pm.

New appointment system: KLINIK

Royal British Legion. This is safe and reduces the risk of infection from multiple trips to a health clinic. When you receive your invitation for a Covid-19 vaccination, this will also be your booking for a ‘flu vaccination.

It is likely that the new system will increase call waiting times throughout the day. Please use the online system if you are able to, and remember to use our call-back facility on the telephones to save you waiting on hold. The telephone system will telephone you back when we are ready to take your call. Over the last three months, the average time waiting for a call-back is 11 minutes, with then just 11 seconds spent on hold.

Please note that your enquiry will still go through the Klinik triage system and you may be allocated an appointment on another day.

When it will operate Online. The online form will initially be open from 8am to 12.30pm. It is our intention to widen these hours once we get used to the new system.

Telephone. Urgent requests: Between 8am –9am and 5pm – 6pm. We ask that you only ring if you feel that your request is very urgent and you need to be seen that day.

By TIM PAINTER at Smart energi With the urgency of climate change and the collapse of biodiversity, the demand for green energy is high. Considering the sharp and continued rise of energy prices, solar panels and battery storage prove good value for money in the medium/ long term. Planning permission and building regulation Solar panels are designated ‘Permitted Development’, meaning that planning permission is no longer necessary, unless it’s a flat roof, listed building or in a conservation area then planning permission will likely be required. Distribution Network Operator (SPEN) If you are installing solar panels with an inverter above 3.68kW (AC output) you will need to get permission from your distribution network operator (SPEN) in our area. This is called a G99 Grid Connection application. Notify your home insurance Make sure your home insurance is valid with solar panels. Does your insurance provider require an MCS Certificate for the solar panels? Inform your neighbours To keep an amiable relationship, make sure your neighbours are informed, or on board. For more details, contact Tim Painter at Smart energi Tel: 01978 437 117 E: www.smartenergi.co.ukenquiries@smartenergi.co.uk

Installation

Will you have a battery? Solar energy is only available during the day. A battery will help store that energy and increase your self-consumption from the solar generation and reduce your electricity bill. Installation It is recommended that your solar panels are installed by an MCS Certified installer, and you have an MCS Certificate. Most energy suppliers require this for claiming the Smart Export Guarantee. Making the most of your solar panels To ensure that you are making the most of the free electricity that the solar panels are generating, it may mean you need to change your routines and plan ahead. For example, using your washing machine or dishwasher during the day rather than in the evening. Making money!

Solar Panel

Smart Export Guarantees (SEG) is a government-backed initiative to pay smallscale generators for low-carbon electricity which they export back to the National Grid. You will require an MCS Certificate, Grid Connection certificate (G98/G99) and Smart Meter.

Claire and Paul are living their dream and I wish them every success. A festival of football culture is being launched in Wrexham later this year, coinciding with Wales qualifying for the World Cup for the first time since 1958. Wal Goch: Festival for Football Lovers will take place at the spiritual home of Welsh football from 11th – 13th November and will offer a dose of World Cup fever for those not going to Qatar. Organisers hope the festival, which has the backing of the Football Association of Wales, will become a yearly event. A range of activities, film screenings, talks and workshops are expected to feature across the city, with the finer details due to be revealed in the coming weeks.

Inheritance Tax (IHT) is widely viewed as unfair, and even the experts agree it’s complex: only effective and early planning can minimise its impact on your estate.

Inherently unfair?

Currently, if your net estate is worth more than the standard nil-rate band of £325,000, 40p in tax is charged for every pound that exceeds the threshold; except, broadly speaking, if you leave your main residence to a lineal descendant, £175,000 is added to that nil-rate band. Unused elements of both allowances are transferable on death to a surviving spouse or civil partner. This regime has been criticised for discriminating against those who don’t own a home, those who don’t have children, and those who aren’t in a marriage or civil IHTpartnership.intheUK is often referred to as a ‘voluntary tax’, and it seems that inertia or ignorance is largely to blame for wealth ending up in the hands of the taxman rather than surviving family members. Although, with careful planning, those with estates currently worth more than the nil-rate band can legitimately reduce their IHT liability, or possibly pay nothing at all. In your gift Gifts are normally included in the net estate for IHT purposes if they were made less than seven years before death. However, they are ignored if they total less than £3,000 in any one tax year. This means that you can make gifts to one, or several people, up to £3,000 in total in any tax year without attracting IHT. If the exemption is not used in one tax year, it can be carried forward to the next year, potentially enabling a couple to remove £12,000 from their joint estate in just one tax Thatyear.money could be used to help younger family members facing financial challenges; for example, topping up a child’s pension or Junior ISA could provide them with an invaluable head start in life. For 2022/23, the Junior ISA allowance is £9,000. While lifetime gifts can significantly reduce an IHT liability, if you don’t take time to write

a valid Will, your estate will be handled according to the laws of intestacy. If you die intestate, you have no control over how your estate is distributed. Rather than everything passing to a spouse or civil partner, a proportion could be transferred to descendants, triggering a potential IHT Ifliability.yourchildren’s share is worth more than the individual IHT threshold, they could be liable to pay 40% tax on anything they inherit over that amount. Writing a Will that leaves assets worth up to the tax-free threshold of £325,000 to children, with the balance of the estate left to a surviving spouse, could avoid this. It is hard to imagine how fast the summer seems to have gone. It doesn’t feel that long since I was writing my article wishing everyone an enjoyable summer ahead. There continues to be a number of issues raised with me by residents and I will work hard to ensure that these are resolved as swiftly as possible. They range from subjects such as housing and social care, as well as some unique issues that always provide me with some interesting solutions! No issue is too small, obscure or effort and it is my pleasure to help. I enjoyed being able to speak to some residents at the recent Artisan Market at the beginning of August. It was a great event as always and well attended. The addition of the outside stalls and the dog show gave it a real ‘Summer Fete’ feel. Well done to the organisers of this event for the village and I look forward to the next one. By now the Scarecrow trail will be coming to an end and if you took part and supported IMAGE with this great activity, thank you. It was great to see so many scarecrows and the range of designs to cover the Queen’s reign. I look forward to hearing who the winners were.

I recently met with the owners of the old Police Station on Chester Road to discuss with them their plans for the site. It was great to speak to Kin and Rachel from Homestead Day Nursery to hear more about the work they do, their journey since 2017 and aspirations for the future. We discussed the challenges that have been raised on their initial planning application and how they will address them to make sure that this building can be brought back into use without disruption to others. I am confident that this can be achieved.

Whilst I am writing, I also want to say well done to Jacob Edwards who lives in the village and was selected and represented Wales in gymnastics at the Commonwealth Games this summer in Birmingham. A huge achievement and I’m sure the village is immensely proud of him.

As always if you have anything you wish to raise, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Celebrate Wrexham! Over the month of September there are a number of events to celebrate Wrexham and the awarding of City Status. This includes the Royal Welch Fusiliers Parade through the City, Wrexham City Fun Day and Wrexham Feast - a spectacular twoday event of Food and Drink. More information on the events can be found here:

We have been working closely with the Highways Department on identifying and ensuring numerous potholes throughout the village have been repaired. Attention has been given to roads such as Chapel Lane, Burton Road and a number of the smaller lanes throughout the ward. Noisy road grids which have caused a constant disturbance for some residents have also been repaired by working in partnership with Welsh Water and the Highways Department. Station Road level crossing As many of you were aware, one of the crossing gates was in a state of disrepair. Ross has been in constant discussions with Network Rail who are responsible for the crossing and land around the railway track. They have now replaced the damaged gate and posts which now once again provides easy and safe access for all making the crossing between Burton and Rossett. Other remedial works have also taken place around this area.

Lavister footpaths

The planning application for the Hwb will appear before Wrexham’s Planning Committee on 3rd October. Chester Marathon A reminder that the Chester Marathon will take place on the morning of Sunday 2nd October. This will involve some road closures throughout the village during the race. More information can be found at www.activeleisureevents.co.uk.We have contacted the organisers to ensure that residents who need to attend Church and other appointments will be allowed to do so. It is important to speak to a Marshall to ensure safe access.

Hugh has contacted the Environment Department and been given an assurance that the long overdue work to Lavister footpaths will be done in the current year’s programme. As soon as a date is available we will let you know. Speed checks, Chester Road Speed tapes will be installed on Chester Road, within the 20mph zone, to monitor the speed of vehicles. This will provide accurate information to determine what further measures are needed. Road markings Residents have raised a number of issues around white junction markings and centreline markings that have been either erased or hidden by road works. We have been given an assurance that these will be reinstated as soon as possible.

Greenfields A number of the perimeter concrete fence posts found near the play area were found to be unsafe. Ross has been working with the Environment Department ensuring the necessary repairs were carried out and the fence was made good.

The reforms define whiplash as soft tissue injury to the neck, back or shoulder. This includes damage to muscles, tendons, or ligaments (i.e. sprains, strains, tears, ruptures, or lesser damage); and damage to soft-tissues associated with muscles, tendons, or ligaments.

The result of the reforms was that, in the majority of cases, it is sadly no longer financially viable for solicitors to make whiplash claims on behalf of victims. There will however, always be exceptions. For example, if the whiplash is accompanied by other injuries, which could be physical or psychological injuries such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

Robert Williams, Partner with GHP Legal Tel: 01978 291456

We are still extremely busy and, whilst our colleagues are well equipped to work remotely, due to current circumstances work may be interrupted – however cases are still ongoing and will be prioritised by urgency and need. Stay safe and thank you for your support.

The principal changes in the reforms relate to the way in which a claim is dealt with. Claims must now be made through a new Official Injury Claim portal that will value them according to a fixed tariff. Claimants will be unable to include any legal fees or costs and the compensation award is likely to be lower than would be anticipated in a claim not affected by the reforms.

Strict time limits apply to bringing a claim for compensation and, where settlement is not reached, court proceedings would need to be issued within three years of the date of the accident, otherwise the claim would be timebarred and the right to bring a claim would be lost. If you are unsure whether you have a valid claim and the reforms apply in your individual case, a solicitor will be able to advise you.

Legal

Advice

The government introduced the Whiplash Reforms in an attempt to reduce the number and cost of minor, exaggerated and fraudulent Road Traffic Accident claims and, in so doing, benefit the majority of motorists by reducing insurance premiums and speeding up the process of settling small claims. Our concern as solicitors, is that having to wade through 64 pages of guidance notes on their own to make an online claim for compensation way below what was previously expected, is likely to put many genuine whiplash victims off claiming.

The Whiplash Claims Scandal

To get in touch please use the ‘Contact us’ form on the website: ghplegal.com

Claims for whiplash injuries affected by the reforms apply to victims over 18 who, as drivers or passengers of a motor vehicle, were injured in a road traffic accident that occurred on or after 31st May 2021, and sustained injuries worth less than £5,000, with a total claim value of less than £10,000.

Until last year, victims of whiplash injury generally used a solicitor to make a claim for compensation. But in May 2021, reforms came into force that changed the way personal injury claims in road traffic accident cases were handled. In particular removing the possibility for legal costs to be recovered in whiplash injury claims.

The roads affected are the: B5102 Rossett Road, Borras Road, Buck Road, Shepherd Road, Commonwood Road, Cross Street, Green Street, Bridge Street The following roads will be closed from 09:30 to 14:45: Farndon High Street, Churton Road/Chester Road, Stannage Lane, B5130 Chester Road. Diversion routes are in place via the A483 & A534. The first runner is expected to reach Borras Road at 10:00. As soon as the last runner and sweep teams have entered Cross Street, the B5102 will reopen. Farndon High Street will reopen when these teams and the last runner are on Chester Road. You can scan the QR code to the left of this page with your phone camera to find an interactive map and full list of road closures, or you can visit: https://bit.ly/CM2022RoadClosures.

Rossett & Surrounding Areas - from 08:00 to 12:00

The Marathon returns on the 2nd October, the race inspires runners of all ages and abilities to become active, maintain a healthy lifestyle, fundraise for charity, and accomplish something they didn’t think was possible. After a challenging return in 2021, the need to get more of the nation active and fundraising for charity has never been more important.

Cleopatra's Coffee Shop will provide a party atmosphere in the centre of Holt. We would like to thank the local community for their support, as all volunteers through Lavister and Rossett are local residents, and for those supporting through Holt and Farndon. If you know of any groups that would like to get involved, or you would like to volunteer yourself, please contact us via email on Volunteers@activeleisureevents.co.uk, as we make donations to community groups who are able to help.

The event relies on individual volunteers, local charities, local community groups and other voluntary groups. We simply couldn’t put these events on without their help and that’s a huge credit to the local communities for being so supportive.

Holt & Surrounding Areas - from 09:00 to 14:00

The race starts at 09:00 from the Racecourse, with runners passing through the City and Handbridge. Runners enter Rossett and run through Wales via Lavister, Darland, Trevalyn, Holt and Farndon before returning to Chester via the B5130 for a spectacular finish by the River Dee. It will be an exciting day, with many first time runners taking part to raise money for charity. Residents are invited to come out and support our runners as they enter Wales for the first time. The runners appreciate the support along the route from those who encourage and cheer them on.

Darland School will be manning the drink station on Darland Lane, with the PTA of St Peter's School in Rossett marshalling in Lavister and Rossett. Both schools will receive a donation from the event.

The roads affected are the: B5445 Wrexham Road, B5445 Chester Road, Darland Lane, Gamford Lane & the B5102 Rossett Road. Diversion routes are in place via the A483 & A534. The first runner is expected on Wrexham Road at 09:25. As soon as the last runner and clean up teams have entered Darland Lane, the B5445 will reopen. Darland Lane, Gamford Lane and the B5102 West of Gamford Lane will reopen when these teams and the last runner have left Gamford Lane. Before runners arrive in Lavister and Rossett, residents affected by the road closures will be assisted to leave their houses when it is safe to do so, and travel towards Christ Church and Wrexham.

We would kindly ask that journeys are planned around these times. Access arrangements may be possible if the event organiser is contacted in advance: Events@activeleisureevents.co.uk or via phone 07985 636 850. We are sorry for any inconvenience caused.
