How to Get What You Want

By EssentialsMAG motivation contributor SASHA KENNEY You might think the title is a bit far-fetched, or you might believe that you can actually get anything you want. Whichever side of the fence you are sitting on, there are indisputably some characteristics that all those people who succeed in achieving their goals have in common. Getting what you want is actually very simple. If you Google the title, over five trillion results will appear; most of them simple, step-by-step instructions on how to get what you want. But there is a catch. Getting what you want might be simple, but it is not easy. There are three fundamental steps: 1. What do you want? This one is pretty obvious; if you are not sure what you want, how could you possibly aim for it? Make your goal clear in your head as well as on paper. Be as specific as possible. For example, rather than saying “I want to lose weight”, your goal should be “I want to lose 5 kg by January the 15th”.

2. Commit fully. Getting what you want usually comes with a price tag. Are you willing to pay the price? If so, commit fully. Focus. Sit down and make a plan. The more detailed the plan, the more likely you are to succeed.

3. Do it! Sounds easy, but we all know it isn’t. This is mainly because you are never going to feel like it. Face it, nobody ever feels like waking up an hour early to go for a run. That is why we have a so called ‘5 second rule’; a great tool to trick your mind into doing things.

As soon as you get the idea that you have to take positive action (for example getting dressed for the gym), count backwards from 5 and once you get to 0, do it! This way your brain won’t have a chance to change your mind.

Boom. You got it!

And as you are on your way to reaching the stars, don’t forget what Confucius said: “Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.” Ditto.

Marford and Gresford Scarecrow Trail Results Here are the results after a very successful Scarecrow Trail and Scarecrow Tea. Rob Walsh, Deputy Mayor, judged the scarecrows while they were on display, and on Saturday 8th September Mayor of Wrexham, Cllr Andy Williams, and his Mayoress, Mrs Beverley Williams, were kind enough to attend to present the prizes. Thank you Rob, Andy and Beverley - it was great to have you so involved.

Winners, as chosen by Rob Walsh, were: • 1st Sleeping Beauty (Spar Gresford) • 2nd The Gingerbread Man (Lucy Hughes) • 3rd Beauty (Lakeside Beauty) • The People's Choice prize went to The Gingerbread Man (very closely behind came Humpty Dumpty and Row, Row, Row your Boat).

All entries with 30 correct answers to the Scarecrow Trail competition were placed in a tub and the Mayor pulled out three names. The three prize winners have been contacted and have received their prizes. We sold 483 entry forms and have raised £878 after paying expenses - we can assure you that it will all be used to help improve our local environment.

Pack Your Bags for a Great Adventure...

Fly-Drive USA (part 1) A successful ‘fly-drive’ holiday should be far more than just joining up the dots. Often the highlights are the unexpected; the hospitality and finding experiences that complement one’s personal lifestyle and interests.

My latest road-trip took me on a clockwise loop from Salt Lake City. The following covers the first half of the journey and will resume from Deadwood in next month’s EssentialsMAG. A straight 2½ hour drive north took us to Lava Hot Springs. Whilst we had overnighted prior to the drive the anticipation of soaking in several hot springs after a long transatlantic flight was truly justified and a sound night’s sleep followed! This allowed for an early start the next morning to Jackson where we had pre-booked a float trip in Teton National Park ($80/£61 per person) which we also toured by car the following day. Other options included white water rafting and horse riding - the nearest I managed was sitting in a full saddle bar stool at the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar! Having already purchased our ‘America the Beautiful’ National Park Passes we continued north into Yellowstone and spent two full days touring this amazing, and surprisingly varied, National Park. This annual pass covered me, the car and up to three adults for unlimited admissions to all of America’s 58 National Parks and over 2,000 federal recreation sites, including National Monuments. Passes should be purchased at the first qualifying park or

monument you visit as well as at many official visitor’s centers.

Reminders that you are standing on an active volcano are constant with endless bubbling mud pools and springs, plus the ever dependable Old Faithful Geyser erupting as if it was a theme park attraction. The highlight has to be the wildlife - deer, several bears spotted at a safe distance, a number of bison that, less so, actually brushed past our car!

Turning east, through the majestic Shoshone National Forest we stayed in Cody. The Buffalo Bill Museum stands proudly in the middle of town and contains five separate themed areas. This provided an informative backdrop for the rest of our trip and should not be missed. Seeing memorabilia from the old TV series “Bonanza” brought back some memories!

Cody also boasts a seasonal nightly rodeo.

This is the ‘real deal’ and not a staged tourist event.

Another scenic drive through Bighorn National Forest continues the heritage of Mr Cody with a stay in Buffalo. The genuine hospitality began with a few beers in the Occidental Bar which was in full swing with the weekly bluegrass jam night. Whether you were a local or a visitor it didn’t matter

- it was all about having a good time! Dinner followed at this historic hotel’s Virginian restaurant. If you have never had Bison steak then this is the place to try it!

An extra night in Buffalo allows for a side trip to Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument – site of Custer’s last stand.

Time Difference: -7 hours

The geological wonder featured in the film ‘Close Encounters of the Third Kind’ is real and can be visited at Devil’s Tower National Monument. This eerie monolith stands alone and is visible from over 12 miles away. Guided tours around its base are available and take 1½ hours. Our guide recounted the true story of George Hopkins, the only person to ever parachute onto the top of in 1941 for a $50 bet. Unfortunately he hadn’t considered the remaining 867 feet to the ground. He was stuck up there for almost a week!

Top Tips: The America the Beautiful pass will save you money compared with paying park admissions individually.

By EssentialsMAG gardening contributor CAROL EDWARDS Here we are in October, after such a lovely summer the cooler days are very welcome, this is the time of year that the garden needs sorting out to prepare it for the Winter. I must admit that I quite enjoy cutting things back and changing the pots and beds to give some colour during the dark days to come. I have made a start and cleared the side beds in the back garden and they look much better. I plan to refill an old Belfast sink with bulbs which I still have to buy, during the summer it was filled with love in a mist, this was very pretty and something I will probably repeat next year. The lawn is very nearly recovered from the drought of the summer, I will mow it soon and maybe feed it for the autumn.

Any perennials or biennials such as Foxgloves grown from seed can be planted out now, this will give them time to make good root growth before the weather turns colder.

Your climbing roses can be pruned now as soon as they have finished flowering.

In the vegetable garden harvest squashes and pumpkins, if like me you have a few plants in the greenhouse such as tomatoes or peppers that are not quite ripe, you can hang the plant upside down and this will help them to ripen. Alternatively put them on a sunny windowsill and this will work as well.

Now is the time to plant autumn onion sets, I haven’t done this for a while but thought I would give it a go this year. If you have strawberry beds or tubs now is the time to order new plants ready for next year.

Now my favourite job (not!) cleaning the greenhouse, it is important to do this each year as pests and diseases can overwinter inside and affect next years plants.

Great Pilgrimage 90 - The Biggest Membership Event for a Generation Dear Vicky, In August 2018, 90 years after the Legion's original pilgrimage, 1113 Legion Branches and their representatives participated in the Great Pilgrimage 90, visiting cemeteries and marching along the same route that the 1928 pilgrims marched. They represented their communities and an entire generation that served while defending their country. The Standard Bearer's and Wreath Carriers paraded to the Menin Gate in Ypres, Belgium.

Local Birds & Wildlife

By Rev. Hugh Linn At this time of year millions of birds are on the move. By mid-October most of our Swallows and other summer visitors have left for distant wintering grounds. Some of our summering Swallows spend the winter in southern Africa.

Other migrants such as Chiffchaffs however, are quite likely to be around well into October.

Some of them will spend the winter around the Mediterranean while others continue their journey south of the Sahara. In recent years, probably due to climate change, increasing numbers of these little warblers are spending the winter in Great Britain.

Another warbler species frequently found in gardens throughout the winter is the Blackcap.

It used to be thought that having bred here during the summer they then avoided the hassle of migration by simply staying put and changing their diet from insects to foodstuff provided on bird feeders. However, ringing returns suggest that our wintering Blackcaps belong to a different population and are actually migrants from central and eastern Europe.

In October, there will be plenty of new arrivals. Redwings, Fieldfares and Bramblings come from Scandinavia and northern Europe. Whoopers from Iceland and Bewick's Swans from Siberia congregate in their thousands on the Wildfowl Trust's reserves at Martin Mere, Welney and Slimbridge. Both species have been recorded locally around the Dee floods.

Migration, however, is not the only strategy employed by birds to cope with winter weather. Members of the Crow family are known for their intelligence and resourcefulness.

Recently we have seen evidence of this from Magpies caching food in our garden. In the Autumn Jays, our most colourful corvids, stockpile enormous quantities of acorns to which they return when the weather is bad and other food becomes difficult to obtain.

In the insect world hibernation is the favourite winter survival technique. Although commonly found sleeping in houses and other buildings there is a growing tendency for Red Admirals to migrate as well. Painted Ladies, however, are migratory and their annual flights to and from northern Europe to North Africa must rate as one of nature's most amazing achievements.

Ian Lucas MP for Wrexham The first column I wrote for EssentialsMAG - back in June - focused on the community’s efforts to keep Gresford Health Centre open and I’m pleased to be able to report positive developments on this front. The Health Board has turned down a proposal from the GPs running the Gresford practice to close and transfer services to Rossett Surgery and Llay Health Centre.

This is, first and foremost, good news as a village as important as Gresford should not have been left without a GPs’ practice. Both myself and Wrexham’s Assembly Member, Lesley Griffiths, made this point to the Health Board – both in writing and in face-to-face meetings – on behalf of the many constituents who contacted us about this matter.

Our message was clear and it just shows what can be achieved when a community unites together behind a particular cause.

So what happens next?

Well, while the health board’s decision to refuse the GPs’ proposal is a step in the right direction there is still more hard work to be done in what is a complex process. The GPs intend to appeal the decision so we need to see what comes from that.

Whatever the outcome, you can be rest assured that I will remain firm in my belief that Gresford should have a functioning health centre open for doctors’ appointments. If the GPs currently providing a service there no longer wish to, then the Health Board must ensure other GPs are sought.

I’d like to say a huge ‘thank you’ to everyone who helped make this year’s Wrexham Singing Streets choir festival such a wonderful event. I had billed this year’s festival as the ‘biggest and best yet’ – and you certainly helped ensure it was.

We’re now into our third year of organising the event, which involves choirs performing at various locations around Wrexham town centre, and we have a small army of valued partners, sponsors, volunteers and choirs who return year after year. The streets really do come alive to the sound of music on Singing Streets day and that is the aim – it’s a showcase for the town and the talent we have here. People flock into the town from the immediate surrounding areas and also from further afield.

The hope is that they will continue to come back, which is good news for the town centre and good news for Wrexham.

This year’s Reading Challenge The Reading Challenge was a great success this summer; 46 children signed up and read an amazing 242 books between them!

As usual, the winner of our own Book Buzz competition – which picks up where the Reading Challenge ends – will receive a £5 book token in recognition of their fantastic effort. At the time of writing, the front runner has read no fewer than 38 books!

A new venture – Jigsaw Library We have been developing a new venture which we hope many of you will enjoy. As the nights draw in, puzzling away at a jigsaw is a great way to spend the long evenings!

People have donated puzzles to us and we’ve been taking them home to do them so that we can see if any pieces are missing.

We had forgotten how much we enjoy doing a jigsaw – how equally infuriating and absorbing it is!

The Jigsaw Library is free; simply call in, select your puzzle, and keep it for three weeks in the first instance; if you need longer, you can renew it. The jigsaws aren’t online, however, so you’ll have to come into the library in Vicarage Lane to choose and return your puzzles. Come and have a look – jigsaws for adults and children alike!

A possible new venture – Lego® Club We’re hoping to start a Lego® Club for the children in the near future, but this

somewhat depends on getting enough Lego® together; we believe it will be a popular activity, but we need plenty of bricks to make it worthwhile. So, if you have any Lego® lurking in your loft or garage that you could donate, or any ideas on where we could pick some up free/cheap, please get in touch (01978 852627; gresfordlibrary@hotmail.com).

Knit and Natter/Coffee and Cake Don’t forget that, every Friday afternoon, we have Knit and Natter/Coffee and Cake.

Bring along something you’re currently working on, or have a go at something small for charity – for example, some of us are knitting and crocheting poppies for this year’s centenary remembrance. Everyone is very welcome; 1.30 – 4.30, Friday afternoons in the library.

We’re here because, back in 2014, the people in our villages didn’t want the council to close our library - and we’ll stay here as long as you need us and continue to use us. We’re open Tues/Wed 2-5pm; Fri 10am-5pm; Sat 10am-1pm. You can borrow eBooks, audio books, as well as traditional books, from across the whole of North Wales. Thank you for your support!

Orchard Crumble

INGREDIENTS

SERVES 5 - 6

400g apple, peeled, cored and cut into small pieces 400g stoned plum, cut into chunky wedges 2 tbsp sugar, any type 300g figs, woody stalks trimmed, quartered 300g blackberry or brambles, washed well cream, custard or ice cream, to serve

FOR THE TOPPING 140g plain flour 140g wholemeal flour 175g butter, cut into small pieces 100g soft brown sugar

METHOD First make the topping. Put the flours in a bowl with a pinch of salt, then rub in the butter with your fingertips to form crumbs. Stir in the sugar with a fork, and chill until needed.

Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/ gas 4.

Tip the apples, plums and sugar into a big saucepan with 50ml water and cook, stirring, for about 5 minutes, until the apples are soft and juicy. Stir in the figs and blackberries, and tip into a baking dish.

Scatter over the crumble and bake for 45-55 minutes until the topping is golden and the fruit is bubbling.

Serve with cream, custard or ice cream.

A BIG THANK-YOU is due to the organisers and all who took part to enhance this picturesque conservation area. Thanks also to Phil Edwards who mended the metal boundary fence on the Main Road and Clapper Lane corner prior to painting. Please, if you are going for a walk on Trust land, use the access points! Following a tree survey, Trustees scheduled work on the trees for the beginning of October. Some tree work near the Lake and Scout Hut necessitated temporary closure of the car parks which we hope did not inconvenience anyone.

This summer, Gresford WI was well represented at the Denbigh and Flint Show.

Gresford WI members also provided refreshments for The Scarecrow Tea with scarecrow guests from the IMAGE trail transported to the Scout Hut for a gettogether. The Mayor and Mayoress attended and presented awards for Sleeping Beauty, the Gingerbread Man and Beauty (without the beast!).

Gresford Snooker Club meets at the Constitution Club and is entering three teams in the League for the 2018-19 season which started on September 11th. Their success means there is now a need to play two teams on the same night, so the 3rd table

will have to be brought up to a better standard which includes recushioning... a significant expense for the club.

This summer, Gresford Royal British Legion members, Adrian Jones and Robert Jones joined thousands of veterans and supporters from the UK and worldwide in ‘Great Pilgrimage 90’, one of the Legion’s biggest membership events in modern history. On 8th August 1928, a decade after the end of WW1, the British Legion (as it was then known) organised for veterans and war widows to visit the battlefields of the Somme and Ypres before marching to the Menin Gate. Ninety years later, the three-day GP90 event featured visits to WW1 trenches, battlefields and cemeteries in France and Belgium. Then on 8th August 2018 more than two thousand Royal British Legion members carried their Standards and wreaths along the same route to the Menin Gate in Ypres to commemorate the beginning of the last 100 days of WW1.

How to Stave-off Cravings

By EssentialsMAG fitness contributor HELEN CONWAY It's been an astounding Summer - almost unending sunshine, making it very easy to get out and about, and stay active. But Autumn is definitely in the air. The mornings are darker and the nights (and days), are cooling down. And it's easy to start to slow down, to want to cosy up. And to start to crave those comfort foods.

So, what can you do to stave-off those cravings?

Keep drinking plenty of water. Even when it's cooler, water is vital for good function.

Ironically, dehydration can cause you to crave salty snacks, dehydrating you further.

Grab a glass of water before opening that bags of crisps and see if the craving passes.

Eat your veggies. A lack of carbs can cause your cravings for sugary snacks to rocket. But to maintain a healthy aspect, chose to satisfy yourself with sweet potatoes, green veggies, pulses and beans. Packed with nutrients and colour, the energy provided by these complex carbs will last longer than that from simple carbs such as donuts, chocolate and biscuits, meaning it will take longer for those cravings to return.

Wait. Research suggests that most cravings subside after about 15 minutes, so wait and see if by changing the task you're working on, or practicing a short breath meditation will refocus your mind, and the craving may pass. If you still feel the need for a snack, keep it healthy by reaching for some nuts, dark berries or dark chocolate. But keep those snacks small and nutritious.

Stay in control of those season changing cravings and you will maintain good energy levels, healthy weight, and as the year progresses and the weather gets even colder, you'll be more likely to continue on this healthy pattern than dive under the covers with a packet of biscuits.

Gresford Cricket Club (GCC) End of Season News

Early September saw the close of the 2018 cricket season. With the weather generally on our side, a full season of cricket has been enjoyed by all at Gresford CC. Pride of place must go to the Second Eleven who completed their season as undefeated champions in the North Wales Seconds Premier League. Remarkably, they won all their games (apart from one rained off!).

Re-organisation within North Wales cricket means that next year they will be competing against a number of club first teams. A challenge that we are sure that they are up to.

Our First Eleven compete in the Premier Division of North Wales, mid-point in the season they were just above the relegation zone. From here on in, they went on a run of nine games undefeated to finish the competition in the top half. A remarkable run! The first team also finished runners-up in the Flintshire Knock-Out 20/20 competition. We also run a senior team in the Chester and District Midweek League (Division 3). A good run of wins meant that we finished as runners-up and are promoted to Division Two for the 2019.

Senior cricket requires a good squad of players and we have been lucky over recent years to have steady flow of cricketers

moving from our junior section into senior teams. Cricket at Gresford is for boys and girls of all ages. All Stars Cricket… an initiative of the ECB (England and Wales Cricket Board) for 5 to 8 year olds is in its second year. We had over 50 youngsters signed up - the largest in the region. Youth teams from under 9 to under 15 competed successfully in NE Wales leagues. Our Ladies section goes from strength to strength.

The season closed with two presentation evenings held in the Memorial Hall… one for Seniors followed by the Junior section.

Award winners and individual performances of note are too numerous to mention… our website details these for anybody interested.

GCC, like many other clubs in the area relies on the work of many volunteers who give their time freely. Their work doesn’t stop at the seasons end. Maintenance work on the ground comes next, junior and senior winter nets and the never-ending need for fundraising. The success outlined above make all the effort worthwhile.

Financial News with Hadlow Edwards The cost of delay Planning for retirement is just one area in which, with the benefit of hindsight, many people wish they’d taken action earlier. How often in life do we look back and wish we had done things differently? According to a study

by Prudential*, two in five pensioners regret retirement-planning mistakes which have left them struggling financially. Nearly one in five say that they didn’t save enough for retirement, and 15% regret not starting to save earlier in their working lives. Pension contributions attract tax relief on the way in and they accumulate capital gains free of tax once inside. When you access your pension savings, the first 25% is normally tax-free.

While you cannot currently draw on the funds until your 55th birthday, this does protect your pot against the temptation to tap into it until then.

Getting off the mark How much pension income you need in retirement will be determined by a number of factors, including your health, your living expenses and your desired lifestyle.

Unfortunately, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. However, as stated in June 2018 by the Office for National Statistics, the average earnings in the UK are £28,028 per annum; so a pension income of around £20,000 may be on average the minimum requirement.

Therefore, even if you qualify for the full single-tier State Pension of £8,546 a year, you would be looking to find at least £12,000 a year from your other pensions.

Playing catch-up The sooner we start, the more choices we have later. The power of compound returns, or gains on gains, means that 10 or 20 years can make a big difference. However, you should never think that it’s too late to start saving, or that you can’t catch up. There are significant opportunities to make up lost ground if you have the available means and allowances.

You can put as much as you want into your defined contribution pension, but you’ll only get tax relief on pension contributions up to £40,000 each year, or 100% of your earnings if lower. Pension providers generally claim tax relief for you (called ‘relief at source’) at a rate of 20% and add it to your pension pot, which actually creates a 25% uplift in the sum; therefore £80 becomes £100. Higher rate taxpayers can claim an extra 20% via their annual tax return; a £40,000 contribution could effectively cost a higher rate taxpayer just £24,000.

In any case, the fact remains that the best way to secure a comfortable retirement is to save as much as possible as early as possible in your working life, and take financial advice.

Rossett Village Festival This year once again saw the welcome return of Rossett Village Festival and the BRHS Annual Show to Darland School. We were fortunate this year with the weather as the sun shone for most of the afternoon.

To keep things fresh and exciting some new attractions were added which proved very popular. These included a Paintball Target Range and Jack-in-the-Box bounce dome which were enjoyed by many of the younger visitors, as was the mobile Planetarium from Techniquest.

As always the indoor Craft Fair was packed for most of the day boasting a wide assortment of quality products from paintings to jewellery to handmade chocolates. Local organisations were well represented too and this year saw the first ever Rossett Community Council Awards ceremony with local people acknowledged for their contributions to the community.

The show would not be complete without the annual Dog Show and with the usual very good turn out. To open the Dog Show was a superb display from Preston Trick Dogs who brought their display team down to the festival.

There certainly wasn’t a shortage of entertainment this year with two areas packed with a diverse range of acts including children's entertainment, vocal artists (including from Burton and Rossett), dance displays and the very popular Singing Hands choir. Finally the Festival had the ever popular London Bus tours of the villages, Donkey Rides for the children and the Kit Car and Vintage Vehicle Rally, which had turned out in force!

A BIG THANK YOU to all the volunteers who work so hard for months to make the Festival happen, to the staff of Darland High School and Freedom Leisure for their support and all those who came to provide stalls and entertainment to give families a fun, local event every August Bank Holiday. The profits from the day, as always, will be used to provide grants to local causes. Grandson and His Dog Walk 600 miles for Charity Local boy Tom Edgar is no stranger to travelling. He has journeyed extensively far and wide around the World, but was unfamiliar with many parts of his own country, Wales. So, this summer he decided to reacquaint himself with his homeland by walking 600 miles of the Welsh coastline with his two-year-old companion - Tegwen the cockapoo.

Tom was inspired to complete the walk in honour of his Nana Pat who has been living with Parkinson’s Disease for over 30 years.

He is fundraising for ParkinsonsUK who support sufferers of the disease and their families. They do this by offering services such as counselling, legal advice as well as funding research to combat the disease and find a cure.

Tom and Tegwen began their adventure on 19th August in Swansea. Their 600 hike took 35 days to complete and finished on 22nd September in Llandudno. They walked an average of 15-20 miles a day battling through rugged terrain and inclement weather including storm Ali. The route they followed however, was shrouded in beauty - from unspoilt bays and wildlife, to beautiful towns and castles surrounding the Welsh coastline.

Tom has overwhelming pride from completing such a feat, knowing that in some small way he has helped his Nana and many others who suffer from Parkinson’s disease. He said, “600 miles of hiking in five weeks is nothing comparison to the resilience that my Nana has shown throughout these years - she was my mental rock when times got tough”.

His Nana responded, “I’m so proud of Tom for what he has done for me and so many other families. I was so happy to meet him at the finish line and give him a big hug!”

Darland High School, Rossett Latest News Darland High School students supported by The Balfour Trust The Balfour Trust for Rossett has again provided much welcomed support for initiatives at Darland High School.

Recently, this money has enabled the school to extend its provision of outdoor sports facilities which can be used at lunchtime and also to purchase maps, tents and other equipment necessary for outdoor education, particularly in support of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme has been a great success with a number of students having achieved the Bronze Level Award in 2017 and now progressing to the Silver Award.

Hugh Jones Councillor for Rossett Travellers. I received numerous communications regarding the occupation of land on Llyndir Lane by Travellers.

The correct protocol was followed by the Landowner who obtained the necessary Court Orders to move them from his land.

Four years ago I facilitated a protocol between Wrexham CBC and North Wales Police to deal with such occurrences and I have arranged a multi-agency meeting to discuss how we respond to these issues.

At the time of writing the Court Order has been complied with and the travellers have moved across the border.

Community Speed Watch. I placed this item on the Community Council Agenda and it has been agreed that we will obtain further information. This is a scheme run

by North Wales Police to involve the local community in helping to reduce speeding in their areas. The speed of cars in residential areas is a regular issue raised by residents. My own observations are that cars are driven at excessive speed through a number of residential areas, Burton Road and Darland Lane to name but two. Exiting from Rosemary Lane onto Burton Road is a risky manoeuvre due to the speed of traffic. Sadly many of the drivers are local residents, including parents on school runs.

Planning. The Planning application by J10 for Bellis’s fields will not be determined until at least November. The application is an attempt by the landowners to pre-empt the Local Development Plan 2 process which also includes the same sites. I am continuing my opposition to these plans.

The problem with LDP2 is that it totally fails to recognise the type of housing that is needed in Rural Areas and seeks to turn our Green Barrier into urban sprawl.

Evidence shows that we need starter homes and bungalows that meet the needs of local residents wanting to get onto the housing ladder and others who wish to down size.

Post Office and Community CafĂŠ. This is proving to be a great success on a Friday Morning and thanks are due to the volunteers and our Community Agent who support this venture. The Post Office are still keen to provide a permanent facility for Rossett and I will continue to ensure this remains on the Agenda.

Network Rail. I have written to Network Rail asking them to tidy up their site on Station Road which has been transformed from its initial rural aspect to a hard core base for weeds.

Public Footpaths. This has been raised at the Community Council who are very keen to ensure that all our footpaths are kept open and used. Rossett, including Burton and Lavister, has one of the highest number of footpaths in the County. If residents observe any problems with our footpaths, please send me an e mail.

But for now, here’s your monthly update: Gresford surgery You may have already heard that the application to move GP services from Gresford has been refused. Whilst I welcome the good news, I hope all parties involved can come together and find a sustainable solution moving forward so that our community will continue to receive excellent health care.

Blocked drains It’s getting to that time of year again where blocked drains can start to become a nuisance!

Marford Hill During the rework by Virgin Media, their contractor has repainted a 40mph sign on the road. The council have been informed and instructed them to remove it. Just a reminder that Marford Hill has been 30 mph for some time now and continues to be - despite one sign at present begging to differ!

Hedges I’ve had a few concerns about overgrown hedges, which in some cases, are forcing pedestrians to walk on the road. With this in mind, and in the interest of safety, please check that any hedges you are responsible for aren’t obstructing a footpath.

Andrew Atkinson Councillor for Gresford Alyn Family Doctors Update. The practice’s application to move ahead with their plans to close Gresford Health Centre has been rejected by the health board panel! Thank you so very much to everyone that has helped me and Cllr Gilmartin to continue to make this case. This is down to everyone in the community and demonstrates what we can achieve when we all pull together and make our views known. I will be back in touch with the health board to see how the practice can be assisted on the current site.

I’m not sure what the next steps will be for the practice whether they will accept the decision of the health board or seek to challenge it by way of appeal but I believe the best next steps for us as a community is to say thank you to the health board.

They have listened to our views and concerns and taken them seriously. If you emailed them during the consultation you may wish to email them again now to say thank you for listening and acting in what we consider to be our best interests. I will continue to keep you updated.

with local health care I don’t believe that anything can be done to significantly improve the highway on Vicarage Lane to make it safe enough for all the extra traffic, and with that, and other reasons in mind, I will be asking for it to be refused as well as working with a great team of local residents to challenge it every step of the way.

As the draft local development plan does not include any development for Gresford and Marford if voted through as it is it makes me concerned that we will see many more developers trying to rush through applications in the village. Some may be good others not but I’ll update you every step of the way.

Rossett Community Council refurbished the Cenotaph at the top of Croeshowell Hill several years ago. Since then Rossett Cubs/Scouts have conducted a short remembrance service at the Cenotaph before parading down to the Cenotaph at Christ Church for the service at 10.45am.

Rossett WI is on a mission to blow that ideology out of the water. WIs today have an impact on many things that affect individuals, communities and the country.

All WIs need members to be part of the WI community and Rossett WI would like your support. In return, you get an opportunity to increase your local friendship circle and have fun whilst participating in a programme of events covering a wide spectrum of topics to meet everyone’s interests. Additionally, there are regular visits and trips organised covering a wide range of activities, more recently the theatre, gardens, canal boat trips.

Great Day Out - Caernarfon Castle, a Brute of a Fortress!

Caernarfon Castle’s pumped-up appearance is unashamedly musclebound and intimidating. Picking a fight with this massive structure would have been a daunting prospect. By throwing his weight around in stone, King Edward I created what is surely one of the most impressive of Wales’s castles.

Most castles are happy with round towers, not Caernarfon! Polygonal towers were the order of the day, with the Eagle Tower being the most impressive of these.

You will also note the colour-coded stones carefully arranged in bands. The site of this great castle wasn’t chosen by accident. It had previously been the location of a Norman motte and bailey castle and before that a Roman fort stood nearby. The lure of water and easy access to the sea made the banks of the River Seiont an ideal spot for Edward’s monster in masonry.

Along with Harlech Castle, Conwy Castle and Beaumaris Castle, this monument has been part of the Castles and Town Walls of Edward 1 World Heritage Site since 1986.

Whilst you're visiting this formidable fortress, don't miss the opportunity to see the Royal Welch Fusiliers Museum, which is housed in two of the castle’s towers. In it you will discover the history of over 300 years of service by Wales’s oldest infantry. Entry to the museum is free once visitors have paid for admission to the castle.

RSPCA - Seasonal Advice for Autumn

As temperatures drop and it gets dark earlier, The RSPCA receive many calls about the welfare of pets and wildlife.

Check out their top tips to keeping animals safe and warm in autumn.

Keeping safe in the dark Always wear reflective clothing to make yourself visible when walking near roads in the dark. And don't forget your pets!

Fit your dog and cat with a reflective collar - but make sure only a quick release collar is used for a cat.

Watch out! Animals on the roads The RSPCA see more injured wild animals coming into their care, who have been involved in road traffic accidents, as the nights grow longer.

Road traffic accidents involving deer are especially common during the rut, which can occur from mid-July to December (depending on the species).

Take note of warning signs, drive with extreme caution (especially early morning and evening) and report collisions with deer to the police.

Fireworks and bonfires during the festive season Build bonfires as close to time of lighting as possible, and check them thoroughly for animals before lighting, this can help save the lives of hedgehogs and other small animals. Loud fireworks can be terrifying for animals.

Bat alert!

Bats look for suitable hibernation sites around October. Pipistrelles are the most likely to roost in buildings during winter.

Bats and their roosts are protected by law in the UK - so you must not disturb or harm them in any way.
