Do You Want Better Sleep? By EssentialsMAG motivation contributor SASHA KENNEY Sleeping well directly affects your mental and physical health. In fact, according to research, better sleep is the single contributor to living better, but worryingly sleep deprivation is on the rise. Now that the nights are drawing it, it might be a good time to start paying attention to the quality of our sleep. How much is enough? • Adults need between seven and nine hours of sleep a night. • Adults who sleep fewer than six hours a night have a 13% higher mortality risk than adults who sleep at least seven hours. • Adults who sleep less than seven hours a day are 30% more likely to be obese than those who sleep for nine hours or more. Here are some top tips to help you channel your inner sleeping beauty: Have fixed times for going to sleep and waking up. This will help your body’s internal clock and improve the quality of your sleep. Choose a bed time you normally feel tired and if you are getting enough sleep, you should wake up naturally without an alarm. If you need an alarm clock, you may have to opt for an earlier bed time. Avoid caffeine, alcohol and big meals late at night. You might be surprised to know that
caffeine can cause sleep problems up to twelve hours after drinking it! Similarly, while a nightcap may help you relax, it interferes with your sleep cycle once you’re out. Also, for a good night sleep, try to make dinnertime earlier in the evening, avoiding heavy, rich foods within two hours of bed. Spicy or acidic foods c an cause stomach trouble and heartburn. Adopt a relaxing night-time routine. You can also try developing a relaxing bedtime ritual to help you prepare your mind for sleep, such as practicing a relaxation technique, taking a warm bath, or dimming the lights and listening to soft music or an audiobook. Reserve your bed for sleeping. By not working, watching TV, or using your phone, tablet, or computer in bed, your brain will associate the bedroom with just sleep, which makes it easier to wind down at night. I’ve Been Hacked! By EssentialsMAG tech contributor DAVID HUGHES These are the words you never want to say, so I thought it might be useful to run through the steps you should take if you know, or suspect, you’ve been hacked. Step 1: It’s difficult but… don’t panic! Hackers thrive on panicked targets. It’s important to try and maintain a level head, and deal with the situation logically. Some damage has already occurred; you now need to limit it. Be extra vigilant when it comes to your email. If you receive an email that seems legitimate (a password reset, for example), don’t click on any links within it unless you know why you have received it. Step 2: Limit financial damage. If you believe your payment information may have been compromised - like an Amazon account, or your online banking directly, contact your bank immediately to get them to suspend the account or cards. You should be able to find the contact details you need via Google. In the case of Amazon and other similar sites, they should deal with cancelling of any fraudulent orders. Step 3: Change your passwords. As I’ve mentioned before, it’s important NOT to reuse the same password for multiple online services. However, we all do. (Yes, me too sometimes!). So if your hacked account shares a password with other services, make sure you change that password immediately, wherever you think it has been used.
For ultimate peace-of-mind, speaking generally now, I would recommend using Two-Factor Authentication (2FA), at least on accounts for which you have a linked payment method. This makes your accounts very difficult to hack. Google ‘2FA’ if you’re unsure what it is, but I will try and cover it in a future article. Step 4: Remain vigilant. Being hacked is a horrible experience. With more and more of our lives moving online, it’s difficult not to see a hack as anything other than a violation. In the real world, we mitigate against loss every day: we lock our houses and cars, use security systems, and we don’t divulge sensitive information to complete strangers. These things are sensible and automatic. By transferring this thinking to the online world in the form of using a different password for each service you use (like a different key for every lock), using TwoFactor Authentication wherever possible (like a security system), and thinking before you click on a suspicious link (you get where I’m going), you increase your chances of never experiencing a hack.

Battlefields of Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift I’ve been reflecting on my recent visit to South Africa and trying to decide what part was the highlight of the three-week adventure. There was the fantastic experience of exploring the outstanding Grootbos Nature Reserve overlooking the beautiful rugged coast of Walkers Bay where the Southern Right Whales can be seen from the shore. Then there was the sheer indulgent luxury of the Rovos Rail journey from Cape Town to Pretoria - amazing! So too was the incredible Mont Rochelle Hotel in Franschoek where the food and wine-tasting experiences were outstanding. But, in the end, I knew it had to be my stay at Fugitive’s Drift Lodge: a very special place set in a 5,000-acre Natural Heritage Site adjacent to both Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift and including the site where Lieutenants Melvill and Coghill lost their lives attempting to save the Queen’s Colour of their regiment. On our first full day, we headed out to Isandlwana in a Range Rover with our knowledgeable guide, Alistair, whose easy-going nature made him seem more like a family friend. First of all, we looked down from the hill over which the Zulu attack was launched onto the plain where the battle took place as Alistair explained the strategies of the opposing armies.
He then drove us into the World Heritage Site and set up three chairs in the shade of a tree where we sat with mugs of coffee and homemade biscuits for over an hour (maybe two - the time flew by) whilst he told us all about the battle and how it unfolded. We were mesmerised by the remarkable story of the great Zulu victory and took time to walk to the cave where the last brave - and, sadly, unknown - British soldier died. The many cairns - piles of whitepainted stones - around the battlefield mark where the bones of British soldiers were gathered together (the ground was too hard to dig graves). On our second day we visited Rorke’s Drift - the scene of one of the most heroic actions in the history of the British Army. This time, our equally knowledgeable guide was Douglas - the son of the owner of Fugitive’s Drift. As I walked around the site and into the reconstructed hospital building, listening to Doug’s insightful stories about the individuals whose incredible bravery and determination was hard to imagine, I felt truly honoured to be there and to understand and appreciate the enormity of their plight - albeit without the danger!

It is incredible to think that 139 British troops - many of who were hospital patients - successfully defended their position against a force of around 4,000 Zulu warriors, winning more Victoria Crosses than in any other single battle in history. The battle of Rorke’s Drift was immortalised by the 1964 film “Zulu” - starring a young Michael Caine and in 1979 the battle of Isandlwana was portrayed by the film “Zulu Dawn”. The Battlefields can be visited from Durban and incorporated into a longer itinerary to South Africa. But whether you are a real history buff or simply a curious traveller like me, the Fugitive’s Drift experience is one that you really should not miss: it will remain one of my travel highlights for years to come.

BRHS - Burton Rossett Horticultural Society Gardening News By EssentialsMAG gardening contributor CAROL EDWARDS Autumn is really here again, although we have had quite a wet year for 2019. You might be forgiven if you thought that there is nothing to do in the garden at this time of the year, but you would be wrong! In fact, the work you do now will make all the difference to your garden for next year, those of you who were at our last meeting will no doubt have picked up a few tips from then. So I shall suggest a few jobs to do, Before I embark on that I would like to thank David Weir for the very informative article about the August Show, it’s always good to hear about the people who did so well and to know how well it went on the day. Pots will need lifting off the ground as this will prevent them getting waterlogged, you can use pot-feet or small bricks. If you still have work to do it is a good idea to place a plank on the ground to avoid compressing the soil. When the frosts arrive wrap your pots in bubble wrap too which will keep them warm and help to prevent any pots cracking in the cold. Place a net over your ponds to prevent debris such as falling leaves polluting the water. The lawn will need spiking with a fork to stop moss building up during the winter. Remember to rake up fallen leaves and compost them as well. Any compost from containers can be re-used as a mulch for flower and vegetable beds too. Don’t forget to clean the greenhouse as well to stop pests overwintering. In my garden my son has prepared and sown the ground for our small wild flower meadow, so we are looking forward to seeing that next year, we have also added some Poppy seeds to the mix which were donated at the August show.

Shooting Star Cancer Support In 1997, concern was expressed by some of the clinicians at Wrexham Maelor Hospital over the treatment pathway for some cancer patients. The North Wales Cancer Treatment Centre had been opened in Ysbyty Glan Clwyd (YGC), but patients had to travel to the centre for chemotherapy as well as for radiotherapy. The patients managed at YGC could be treated locally, and a ward had been set aside in Ysbyty Gwynedd to deliver chemotherapy, leaving only the Wrexham and Flintshire patients having to travel. There was a severe shortage of outpatient facilities in Wrexham including inadequate facilities for a women’s clinic. Mr Michael Crumplin FRCS suggested building a local cancer support unit in Wrexham and was instrumental in setting up a fund-raising appeal. The project operated as a charity entitled Wrexham Maelor Hospital’s Shooting Star Appeal. £2.5 million was raised and on the 13th April 2005 the Shooting Star Unit was opened by the Duke of York. Since building the Shooting Star Unit, the charity has funded more than 60 projects amounting to over £1 million. This charity is independent and our focus is on cancer patients who are being treated at Wrexham Maelor Hospital, or by their clinicians. The decision to change the name of the charity to Shooting Star Cancer Support was for the name to reflect the aims of the charity. The charity is administered by a volunteer Board of Trustees. Projects funded are those that enhance the pathway for patients undergoing either diagnosis or treatment for cancer by directly funding equipment that is difficult for the NHS to provide due to its financial constraints and which allow optimisation of the journey for the patient through their diagnosis or their treatment. How to Donate Financial pressures on the NHS Trust mean that it is simply not possible to purchase all equipment and provide other facilities as and when a need is identified and that is where our charity comes in. The generosity of local people and communities provides funding which enables us to purchase items to allow the staff to continue with the finest specialist cancer treatment possible in a caring, well equipped and comfortable environment. More than any other season change, I always think the shift from Summer into Autumn brings with it the most significant and spellbinding transformation. As we breathe in the crisp cracklings of Autumn and breathe out the residual warmth of Summer, there’s a real transition that is felt, both inwardly and outwardly. As landscapes ignite with burnt hues of crimson and amber, and frost unexpectedly bites the breeze, we start to settle ourselves into a slightly cosier way of being. Stilettos become slippers, healthy salad becomes hearty stew, and as the barbecue is wheeled back into the shed, suddenly we say: ‘bloody hell, it’s nearly Christmas!’ Yes, I said it. The C word is officially on our lips. And nowhere is kindling the glowing embers of festivity more beautifully and enticingly than The Carden Arms in Tilston. The restaurant itself is a homely hub of warmth and wonder. Different sections of this large yet consistently cosy pub project very different themes - but all are adhered to with an inviting elegance. I ate in a rather British section of the pub, under the watch of various monarchs, amongst an array of
UK flags. That sounds eccentrically patriotic... and it absolutely was, in an impressively tasteful way. The vibrant soul of this restaurant can be peered into through the bustling open kitchen; a feature that immediately injects atmosphere and instils confidence. If chefs are happy for you to watch them work, surely you’re onto a winner?! Safe to say, the Carden’s Arms had me in a hopeful embrace at this point - and then came the food... Salmon Terrine. In contrast with the cosy cuddliness of the scene I have just set, this Summery sounding starter seems a bit out of place, but trust me, come rain or shine, you’ll want this plate of perfection in your life. Slices of soft poached salmon fillet sat between layers of light salmon mousse that was delicately flavoured with fresh dill. A scattering of crisp capers that had burst and blossomed under the heat of being deep fried added texture and saltiness to the dish, whilst a punchy salsa of tomato, onion, capers, basil and some very good olive oil proved to be a fragrant and flavoursome accompaniment to the fish. I was excited for the fennel purée but despite being silky smooth and beautifully

creamy, The Carden Arms’ rendition just lacked in that signature aniseed tang. I have to say though, this absolutely didn’t detract from the flavoursome and fresh heart of this innovatively conceived dish, which truly was one of the most stunning starters I have had in a long time. Owner, Didy and her brilliant team are pioneering something pretty special here. This isn’t just pub grub done well, this is passionate, proud, ethically rooted, visionary hospitality that recognises the power of nurturing the genuine foundations from which a business is grown. There is a delicate and purposeful simplicity to this soul-warming 18th Century Coaching Inn that immediately ignites confidence, comfort, and once you catch a waft from that open kitchen, an insatiable appetite. The Carden clearly has Arms for a reason… and I’ll be returning for another cwtch as soon as I possibly can.

Home-Made Paprika Burgers INGREDIENTS
SERVES 4
500g packet of beef mince, 15% fat (it helps with flavour!) 1 medium egg Olive or vegetable oil 1 white onion - diced into small pieces 3 tablespoons of smoked paprika 2 teaspoons of mixed herbs (or basil, parsley etc) 2 garlic cloves crushed Salt and pepper Burger buns (we love Henllan baps)
METHOD Gently fry your onions for a couple of minutes until they are soft, place them on side to cool while you prepare other ingredients. In a bowl, knead the mince in with the egg, garlic, paprika, spices and salt and pepper. Add the fried onions and mix well until all the ingredients are knitted together and you have a nice ball of mince. Line a baking tray with tin foil. Take a good hand-size chunk of the mince and roll into a ball shape, then use the palm of your hand to flatten into shape. Repeat until all mince has been use up. Place the burgers on the tin foil. Place the burgers in the fridge for at least 30 minutes prior to cooking for them to seal and set. Preheat a griddle, or frying pan and add some oil - I use olive oil, and bring to a medium heat. Gently place the burgers into the pan with a flat slotted spoon and grill burgers for roughly five minutes each side, dependant on their size! A good way to check is when the burger seems to be half way cooked on bottom then turn them over.

When they're done, drain the excess fat from burgers on a kitchen towel before placing on your burger bun, I use Henllan Baps but that's my preference. We have fun adding different ingredients but its purely to taste, I find cooked bacon, cheese, jalapeños, lettuce, tomato, chipotle sauce all goes well together and is a taste sensation! It's one for all the family, I get the children involved in the mixing and shaping of the burgers and they absolutely love them - as do mum and dad!

It’s been a while since our last update, so it was time to let you all know what’s been going on at Gresford Athletic Football club and to give you some dates for your diary. Since the successful amalgamation of the Youth and Senior Sections this season we have been working hard together to improve the pitches and equipment. Renovation work at Clappers Lane and the Gravel Pit, Wynnstay Lane are a step in the right direction for the future. Thanks must go to our Senior and Youth Secretaries - Pat Marshall and Jason Gee who work tirelessly behind the scenes. The Youth Section now has ten teams, from under 7’s through to under 16’s. That’s over 150 youngsters enjoying the sport each week! The Adult Section has had a shake up this season with the FAW (Football Association of Wales) now managing football across Wales. Our first team now plays in the Cymru North League. This season we host large town sides such as Colwyn Bay, Rhyl and Bangor City at Clappers Lane. Our attendance levels are increasing week on week and our new spectator stand has proved a success for home and visiting supporters. Our Young Reserves Team continue to make the transition from youth to adult football in the reserves league. Our Adult Teams have recently started their dark night’s training at the recently renovated Colliers Park. The facilities are superb and a great asset for the coaches and players of our village club – with huge thanks to the FAW. Our November Saturday Home Fixtures, 2.30pm KO are as follows: 9th November - Porthmadog 23rd November - Flint Town 30th November - Llangefni On the social scene we have a number of village events in the coming months for everyone. We start our Autumn with the Fireworks Evening at Clappers Lane on Saturday 2nd November at 7.00pm. On Thursday 28th November we plan to hold a family Bingo night in the Legion at 7.00pm. Our annual village pensioner’s Christmas party and raffle will be held on 15th December at 2.00pm in the Legion and next year we will hold our second Beer Festival on Saturday 27th June by the Lake in Gresford. Gresford Trust Newsdesk By Jenny Dutton You may have noticed the vehicles of a production company working on a BBC comedy at Colliers’ Park were parked on Trust land. The income from allowing the vehicles, which were required by actors and film crew, will go some way to supporting the Trust for this year. As part of the contract the production company are paying for all repairs necessary to the grounds, gate posts and fence. With the best will-in-the-world no one foresaw the rainfall that occurred during their stay what a welcome to Wales! Trustees are working with the production company to ensure that this renovation work is carried out swiftly and to a standard to return the cricket pitch to its original condition for the 2020 season. Volunteering was very much in evidence at the beginning of October with a work party preparing Trust buildings for winter and completing necessary jobs to give a facelift. Gutters were cleared, shrubbery tidied with weeds and undergrowth removed to reveal mature plants previously hidden from view. With green bins filled to overflowing the Trust had enough greenery to fill a trailer - thank you John Dutton. Renovation work has also just been completed at the Constitutional Club. In order to comply with current legislation, the Trust engaged professional contractors to remove historical building materials from the Club to enable the work to be certified as meeting current regulations. Gresford Cricket Club season ended mid September followed by Presentation Evenings kindly sponsored by SG Estates.
At the Senior Presentation, skipper Dan Williams was awarded First Team Player of the Season and George Morris Second Team Player of the Season. All teams had a good season with the 1st finishing mid-table in the Wales Premier League, the 2nd took 4th place in Division 2 – making them the second highest placed 2nd team in North Wales. The mid-week team competing in Division 2 of the Chester & District Midweek League only narrowly missed out on promotion, finishing 3rd in their league. The Ladies Captain, Caitlin T gave the best speech of the night and presented the Ladies Award to Justine Parry. The Junior Presentation Evening celebrated the teams’ achievements with awards in all age groups with the Outstanding Achievement Award going to Georgia Munroe, who plays in Gresford U13, U15 and Ladies cricket and has also had a season with Wales at U 15 level. What Inspires You? By EssentialsMAG fitness contributor LEE EASON This month’s article is more of a personal topic for me, expressing why I feel the need to keep active and what it is that drives me to keep this going against all the odds. As a teenager, I used to eat as a comfort due to a broken household in which my father was not around. I am sure there are plenty of people who can relate to this in some way by using food as a distraction or a means of escape. In my teens I struggled to keep my weight down, and using food as my comfort was not the best idea. I decided to make a change at the age of 16, and I applied to join the British Army. This was a step in the right direction to change my life, not only physically but mentally too. At 17 I had completed basic training, officially becoming a Sapper (the Royal Engineers’ equivalent to a Private). This then shaped me to have my ‘never give up’ attitude, regardless of the difficulties I’d faced. And of course, there will be hurdles, especially the weather, injuries, family commitments and the all-important time! For me the drive now is to set an example for my kids to follow and by paving the way for them in whatever they aspire to do. Getting them involved in exercise is a great way to not only bond with them, but also keep them active and in shape, as I have realised it has a knock-on effect to many other achievements.

Local Birds & Wildlife By Rev. Hugh Linn Over the last month or so our local bird population has undergone many changes. Insectivorous species such as Swallows, Martins and Warblers have left for warmer climes and are now being replaced by northern migrants. Many of these Winter visitors are distinctive and easily identifiable. Redwings and Fieldfares, though typical members of the thrush family, are clearly different from our resident Song and Mistle Thrushes. Redwings would be more helpfully described as ‘redflanks’ as the red markings on the underside of their wings is only visible when the birds are in flight, but it is the bright flank markings that are conspicuous when they are perched. The larger skewbald Fieldfares (often found in flocks with Redwings) have grey heads, orange tinted spotted breasts, rich brown backs and grey rumps. Their loud "chack chack chack" flight calls are also distinctive. During the winter continental Blackbirds and Robins also move to the UK but are hard to separate with any certainty.

Last November, amongst our many wintering wildfowl, there was a record number of 63 Goosanders on Gresford Flash. Throughout this summer and early autumn Gresford Flash has been noticeably devoid of wildfowl - apart from a few Coots, Moorhens, some Mallards and a single breeding pair of Great Crested Grebes. For much of the time the surface of the flash has been covered with green algae. During past Winters the flash has usually attracted a good variety of visiting wildfowl. It will be interesting to see how things turn out this year. Recently, however, not far away, there have been hundreds of Greylag and Canada Geese on the old airfield which is now Borras Quarry. As well as geese the quarry has hosted large flocks of migrating Lapwings, Starlings and both Pied and White Wagtails. This Autumn has been a good time for spiders both indoors and out. I have to admit to a certain fondness for spiders, though preferably not in the bath! The orb web species whose webs must rank among nature's most remarkable creations are particularly fascinating. I’m Dreaming of a Green Christmas By EssentialsMAG environment contributor ROB RENOUF The pressure to consume will soon reach its peak, with Black Friday, Christmas and the January Sales all on the horizon. America has almost the highest carbon footprint per person of any country, and the frenzy of consumption they’ve exported to us in the form of Black Friday helps explain why. I don’t want to come across as all bah humbug - I really like Christmas; but if we’d like to reduce our environmental impact, we need to consider how we celebrate it. Many people are now boycotting crackers filled with plastic tat and wrapping paper containing plastic. Not buying stuff we really don’t need that’s been transported half way around the planet is an incredibly easy and painless change for us to make. Besides helping the environment, it’ll also leave us with a smaller credit card bill in January. One of the reasons China has the highest total carbon emissions of any country is the massive quantity of goods they produce for export. Essentially, we can help decrease emissions in other countries by reducing our demand for their products. A more sustainable Christmas doesn’t mean no gifts or fewer gifts – we can give many other things: Memories – event tickets, memberships and experiences (although perhaps not a super car experience if we’re aiming to help the planet).
Our time – by sharing our skills or giving something like a help decorating voucher. Upcycle – for example by refinishing an old piece of furniture, or the wind chime I made from worn out bike cogs. Buy second hand – from antique shops, charity shops or online. Make – bake a cake or craft something unique. If we’re going to buy something new, then ethical options like Fairtrade and organic items are a good place to start. And whilst we’re on the subject of buying less new stuff… Repair Café Wrexham The Wrexham Enterprise Hub will host the town’s very first repair café on Saturday 16 November. Bring along an item that needs repairing and volunteer fixperts with the necessary skills will endeavour to fix it for you. Whilst they do this you can either watch and learn, or just relax and have a cup of tea. There’s no charge for repairs, but donations are welcomed. Autism Friendly Status at Wrexham AFC
It is an honour to be back in EssentialsMAG informing you all once again of another element to my job role. In my last article I touched on us being Autism Friendly at Wrexham AFC, and this month, on the 27th November, we celebrate having Autism Friendly Status for a full 12 months. We have put an awful lot of effort in to making our Autism Status Service the very best it can be. As well as our fantastic Sensory Room now fully stocked, our friendly face stewards who provide an excellent service each game to the families using the ‘Quiet Area’ in the ground, our waitress service has also proved a very popular as it helps parents immensely. And new to this season we have started handing-out free Wrexham bags containing sensory items to any children who regularly attend the games. One of the biggest successes was the fact I saw a need for an Autism Friendly Football Session, because the parents I was meeting said their children couldn’t attend mainstream sessions. So, in February half term, I set up the first session which is now held every school holiday for an hour. These sessions are run by our highly qualified Racecourse Community Foundation staff in conjunction with the Wrexham
Branch of The National Autistic Society. What an amazing success these sessions have been - they are so well attended showing there was a need to set this up. Our next session is Tuesday 29th October in Glyndŵr Sports Hall 2pm – 3pm and anyone is welcome whether you are diagnosed with autism or still waiting for a diagnosis. If you register with Wrexham NAS the sessions are completely free, or if you would rather not register there is a small £2 charge which covers the room hire cost. The feedback has been absolutely outstanding and to see the smiles on the children faces means everything to me. I attend each and every session to be a familiar face to everyone. A few months ago, I asked two of our 1st team players to be ambassadors for my DLO role, they have been fantastic, offering to help raise the profile of my job and supporting everything I achieve. In the summer holidays they even attend the Autism Friendly Football Sessions, giving the children a chance to meet 1st team players, as I’m sure you can imagine they were a massive hit!

Following on from our planning article in the last Essentials Mag where, we felt that we should now focus on a particular part of finance where we help a lot of our clients plan for their retirement. If you expect to retire on a final-salary pension and with no mortgage, your perspective on retirement may well be rosy; if you are grappling with a mortgage and worried about having insufficient pension savings, it may be a different picture. Research from the Financial Conduct Authority reveals that around 15 million individuals are not saving anything towards their retirement and will have to rely entirely on the State Pension in their later years.1 Why do so many people fail to plan their retirement? This could be partly due to massively underestimating the amount of money they need to save. According to BlackRock, those who were asked to calculate how much they would need for their desired retirement income of £26,000 a year estimated they would require £233,000 in savings; and yet they would need a pot of £525,000 for this income, even including the State Pension.3 People also underestimate longevity and therefore how long retirement could last. Only 7% of people aged 55–64 today expect to live to 90, but research indicates that half of them can expect to live that long.4 The obvious implication is that many retirement pots will run out too soon. The solution is to plan You have to ask yourself: how much will I need, and how much can I afford to put away? Then you need to factor in any other sources of retirement income and you can see the size of the gap you are trying to fill.

Teams4U Shoebox Appeal What would it be like to wake up on Christmas morning and see no presents under the tree? Unfortunately, that’s the reality for countless children around the world living in difficult and sometimes desperate situations. Local charity Teams4U believe all children should receive a bit of magic and joy at Christmas and have made it their aim to send over 80,000 shoeboxes this Christmas season. Can you help? What goes in a Shoebox? Teams4U say each gift is a bit like a Christmas Stocking in a shoebox – e.g. an assortment of small toys, sweets, stationery for school, colouring pens, new socks, gloves, hair accessories, toiletries etc. “Every Shoebox is a unique and personal gift from one person to another, which is what makes them so special. They’re gifts of love that show a child that someone, somewhere cares for them and has thought of them.” Dave Cooke, Founder of T4U. Where do they go? This year T4U will be sending donated shoeboxes to: orphanages in Belarus; displaced people groups in Bosnia; marginalised communities in Moldova and Romania; and to some of the poorest communities in rural Uganda. “People often ask what difference does a Shoebox make? We know these gifts can’t solve world hunger or fundamentally change the situations these children are in. Local Police Advice Keeping North Wales Safe Telephone Scams North Wales Police are warning members of the public to be alert to telephone scams after fraudsters target residents in the Wrexham area. Over recent weeks there has been a significant rise in victims living in the Wrexham area receiving automated messages claiming that £600 has been taken from their bank account. The victim is then prompted to press 1 for further information which then connects the victim to a fraudster. The fraudster then asks the victim to confirm personal details or advises the victim that they need to transfer funds to another account. Once the money is sent there is little chance of getting it back. Financial abuse safeguarding officer DC 2675 Rachel Roberts said: “The people committing these types of fraud are insistent and often don’t give victims time to think. They are very persuasive and may have some of the victim’s personal details which make the fraudsters appear genuine.” “These fraudsters will target the most vulnerable people in our communities in order to scam them out of large sums of money and I would ask that people remain vigilant.”
Police have issued the following advice to residents: • If you receive an automated message claiming there has been fraudulent activity on your account hang up. If you are concerned call your bank on a trusted phone number. • If a caller asks you to move money or to have money at your address ready for collection end the call immediately. • Do not give personal details, including banking details, to anyone you do not know either in person, over the telephone or email, or on social media as these details can be used to steal your identity. • Beware of cold calls even when the caller appears to have personal information such as your address, date of birth or bank account details. • If an offer seems too good to be true it usually is. Take time to think about what is being offered or asked of you. Residents are asked to report these calls to Action Fraud www.actionfraud.police.uk or call on: 0300 123 2040. Darland High School, Rossett Wrexham’s Hidden Gem Darland students soar to success in GCSEs a year early. Students from Darland High School are celebrating A*s in Mathematics and Numeracy GCSEs having sat them at the end of Year 10. Dr Edwards Head of Maths Faculty said “The students have worked exceptionally hard to cover both two year courses in one year. We want to ensure every student gets given opportunities to succeed in their areas of strength. They will now follow a more advanced course in Year 11, touching on elements of A-Level mathematics.” Darland sat at the top of the Wrexham Schools performance table from 2018-2019, and this summer’s superb results continue this upward trend. This September Darland welcomed new Headteacher – Joanne Lee. Mrs. Lee brings with her a wide range of experience from her teaching career that spans over two decades, and draws on roles in Stoke-on-Trent, Nantwich, Widnes and most recently Wrexham. Russell Gilmartin Councillor for Marford & Hoseley Somehow, it’s the eleventh month of the year?! The gloves are… on, and for those of us who celebrate Christmas, the festive period is just around the corner. Before I get too carried away with talks of partridges and pear trees though, I better share this month’s hot topics… Hedges Yeah, sorry…that’s as hot as it’s getting. I know this is mentioned in some of my previous articles but there are still some overgrown hedges in the village causing problems. I’ve said it before (673 times) and I’ll say it again - if you have got a hedge that overhangs a footpath, please trim it back! If the Council are forced to cut them back, they will seek reimbursement, it would be a drain on valuable resources that could be more wisely uses elsewhere. Footpaths On the note of overgrown shrubbery… as we are now in Autumn, its worth noting the amount of leaves covering footpaths. These can be quite slippery and hazardous during wet weather, so it’s advised to take care when necessary. At the moment, it’s a relentless task trying to keep footpaths clear of them, so please do be aware – and if you find yourself in a position to clear any, that will always be hugely appreciated! Parking near The Rofft School Just a reminder for residents not to park on yellow lines near the school. I’m still getting reports of residents having their driveways blocked in the morning and afternoons. I know I sound like a broken record but if you do have an option to walk instead of drive, get those steps in! If not, please endeavour to park where people’s properties aren’t being obstructed. Difficult Decisions I would urge all residents to have their say and take part in the Difficult Decision’s consultation on further budget cuts. Information surrounding this can be found on the Council’s website, or you may wish to call them if you have trouble getting online. As we are fast approaching Christmas, it is worth looking out for activities going on in the village and around the Borough leading up to the festive period. Andrew Atkinson Councillor for Gresford Wrexham Council is conducting a libraries review to look at the usage of libraries across the County Borough, how improvements can be made as well as unfortunately cuts to its budget. This is driven by a grant reduction from Sport Wales and Welsh Gov and is beyond the council’s control as it has changed the arrangement for every council in Wales. The budget situation for Wrexham Council remains very difficult and a lot of work is taking place on looking at cuts and savings, this is very difficult as a process and will mean that community councils as an example may face decisions about taking on more services or some services may be delivered in a different way in future. I will keep you updated with consultations so that you can make your views known.
The practice manager of Alyn Family Doctors has written to inform me that they have introduced some temporary closures of Gresford Health Centre (this may well have happened by time of print) I’m told that one of the GP partners has been taken ill and is likely to be off for the next four to six weeks and that they have mitigated where they can, through rearranging rotas and putting on extra surgeries, but some closures cannot be avoided. They will continue trying to arrange locum cover but it is proving difficult so far at short notice, especially with halfterms in England and Wales over the next few weeks. They state that GPs and the Urgent Care Practitioner will be able to visit any patients assessed as needing a home visit in Gresford as usual. I'm grateful to the practice for updating me, it's appreciated as I can now let residents know what's going on. I understand their situation but my residents and I still don't understand why it's Gresford that is always the practice to close. I hope that this can be explained to Gresford and Marford patients. Transport to an alternative practice will always be an issue for many of my residents and those of Cllr Gillmartin so we hope to have answers on this soon.
Cllr Gilmartin and I recently met with a housing developer that wishes to build in both of our wards. We listened to the plans and now wait to see if an application comes forward. Obviously we will keep everyone updated and scrutinise plans if and when they’re available to see the impact any proposal would have and discuss it with residents so that we can represent your views.

Put on music to mask the sound of fireworks; • It’s fine to comfort your pet if it helps them relax, or leave them alone unless you think they will harm themselves; • Never punish your pets when they’re scared as this will only make things worse in the long run; • If you have small pets that live outside, partly cover cages, pens and aviaries with blankets so that one are is well soundproofed. Make sure that your pet is still able to look out. Provide lots of extra bedding so your pet has something to burrow in.
• Close any windows and black-out a ‘doggy play area’ so that your dog can’t see the flashing lights; • Before fireworks begin move your dog to the doggy play area with all their favourite toys; • Ignore the fireworks yourself. Play with a toy to see if your dog wants to join in, but don’t force them; • If your dog has a doggy-friend that isn’t scared of fireworks keep them together, your dog may be comforted by them.
Just for Cats • Make sure your cat has somewhere to hide if they want to. For example this may be under some furniture, or in a quiet corner. Don’t try and tempt your cat out as this will cause them to become more stressed.
