Rossett Station Picture the scene back in the late 1800s when the local farmers would arrive at Rossett station in their horse drawn carts and wait to unload their milk churns destined for the local markets. The station opened in November 1846 located on the Great Western Railway Company’s Paddington to Birkenhead line. At the time of opening there were six trains running in each direction on weekdays, between Wrexham and Chester.

Construction of the railway had a considerable impact on the viability of the toll roads, as much of the business of moving heavy and bulky goods transferred to this form of transport. By 1904 Rossett station was able to handle horse boxes, livestock, parcels and private carriages by rail. It had a 1 ton 10cwt lifting crane.

In 1884 a signal box with 28 levers was opened.This controlled the main line, the level crossing on Station Road and the goods yard which was extended around this time.

By 1903, 32,254 passenger tickets were sold, 91 wagons of livestock were handled and 58,687 parcels were forwarded. 2998 tons of coal and coke were delivered. In it’s heyday Rossett station was a very busy place.

The main facilities at the station were on the up platform, the Shrewsbury direction. The buildings were quite extensive and included the station house and offices. On the down line, Chester direction, the buildings consisted of a waiting room and toilet facilities with the roof line extended to provide shelter.

After the station closed to passengers in October 1964 goods were still carried until 1968.

The station remained intact after closure and was used by a number of special trains that were run for Moreton Hall Girls’ School. The last of these ran in July 1989.

Browser: An application that allows you to access the Internet. Popular web browsers include Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge and Microsoft Internet Explorer.

Cache: When you read a web page in your browser, the data is “cached” (stored on your computer). The next time you want that page, your browser accesses it from the cache, so the page loads more quickly. Sometimes, this means you don’t get the most up-to-date information, and you need to clear the cache by refreshing the page or emptying the cache.

Cloud computing: Cloud computing refers to services that store information on servers remote from a your local device, which is then accessed via the Internet either in your browser on via a dedicated application.

Cookie: A small piece of code that is created by a web server and stored on your computer in order to store your particular preferences or track your usage.

ISP: An internet service provider (or ISP)

Search engine: A search engine is a website that allows you to search for information on the Internet. Search engines index websites and their databases in order to make them searchable by keyword. The most popular search engines are Google and Bing.

SSL: SSL (or secure sockets layer), is a protocol that allows Internet users to send encrypted messages across the Internet.

A web address that begins with “https” indicates that an SSL connection is in use, and some browsers now label “http” websites as “Not Secure”.

URL: A URL (or unique resource locator), which is often known as a website address, is the string of characters you type into a browser to access a particular website.

For example: http://www.bbc.co.uk Wi-Fi: Wi-Fi is a technology that allows devices to communicate via a wireless signal.

Essentially, it means you can browse the Internet without having to plug your device into the phone line directly.

Budget Break in Budapest Budapest (Hungarian pronunciation “boo-dah-pesht”) is intriguing, fascinating and full of hidden treasures.

Whatever the duration of your break a 24-hour stop over or a seven-day visit there is an abundant variety of historical attractions, eateries, drinking hotspots, vibrant nightlife and unique outdoor spa experiences to whet any appetite.

Budapest exudes youthful energy yet also boasts a world-class classical music scene; and, with an eclectic mix of history, culture, nature and architecture, there truly is something for all ages and interests.

BRHS - Burton Rossett Horticultural Society Gardening News

By EssentialsMAG gardening contributor CAROL EDWARDS Today, as I write this, it seems as if spring has at last arrived, the sun is out and everywhere are signs of new growth. This makes me think of all the jobs to catch up with in my garden.

It is so beautifully warm as well and on a walk outside I can see plants bursting into growth.

There are plenty of things to catch up with including planting up your hanging baskets, it’s best to keep them under cover for a while though as we could still have some late frosts. Remember to add a slow-release fertilizer and some water retaining crystals when putting the plants in.

Any new plants or cuttings need to be hardened off gradually, this can be done by putting them out in a sheltered spot on sunny days, or placing them into an open cold frame and then covering them up at night, or putting them back into the greenhouse for 7 to 10 days.

Now that the spring flowering bulbs are finishing don’t be tempted to tie them up or trim them off, they are best left to die down naturally as this puts the goodness back into the bulbs for the next season.

Spring flowering shrubs can be pruned back when they have finished, and lavender flower-heads can be cut off now.

The greenhouse is warm enough to start planting out your tomatoes, but wait a while to plant your cucumbers as these are very tender and will not survive a cold spell.

Local Birds & Wildlife

By Rev. Hugh Linn On April 1st Gresford Flash became a birding one-day wonder site with the appearance of a pair of rare Black-necked Grebes. An hour or so after an early morning phone call informing me of their presence, armed with binoculars, telescope and camera, I made my way up to the Flash only to find to my great disappointment that they were nowhere to be seen. My frustrated first reaction was to wonder whether I had just become the unwitting victim of an April Fool's Day hoax!

Fortunately, in the afternoon, I happened to be passing that way again and was happily able to banish that unworthy thought. They were back!

Like a solitary Swallow and a little flock of Sand Martins the grebes were just passing through on migration. The following day they had moved on. The migratory journeys of some birds are astonishing. Some of our local Swallows have been found to spend the winter as far away as Tawny Mining Bee South Africa, but of their smaller relative, the House Martin, much less is known about their winter quarters once they have crossed the Sahara desert. On 9th April one of these little birds was investigating a nest box under our eaves. I would love to know where it had been since leaving last autumn.

While migratory birds are returning a whole variety of insects are emerging from hibernation. Our first garden butterfly was a Comma passing through at the beginning of April. Since then we have had Holly Blues, Orange Tips and a Small Tortoiseshell. Bright yellow Brimstones have been spotted on nearby hedges along with an assortment of bees including Tree and Red-tailed Bumblebees, Several species of Mining Bees have been living up to their name digging holes in lawns. Two of the most conspicuous are black and white Ashy Mining Bees and brightly coloured female Tawny Mining Bees.

The results of January's Big Garden Birdwatch show that despite recently declining numbers in some areas the House Sparrow once again took the UK top spot.

Although failing to make the top ten Long-tailed Tits have been very much in evidence in and around gardens and seem to be one of our most popular species.

Rhubarb & Vanilla Jam MAKES 3 x 1LB JARS

INGREDIENTS 1kg rhubarb, weighed after trimming, cut into 3cm chunks 1kg jam sugar (or 1kg caster sugar plus 1 x 8g sachet pectin - we used Tate & Lyle) 2 vanilla pods, halved lengthways Juice 1 lemon

METHOD Put a small plate in the freezer.

Put the rhubarb into a preserving pan or your largest saucepan with the sugar and halved vanilla pods. Heat gently, stirring, until all the sugar has dissolved, then squeeze in the lemon juice and increase the heat.

Boil for about 10 minutes, skimming off the scum as you go (the fruit should be soft). Test for setting point by spooning a little onto your chilled plate.

After 1-2 minutes, push your ďŹ nger through the jam – if the surface wrinkles it is ready, if not, keep cooking for 2-minute intervals, testing in between.

(Or if you have a sugar thermometer it should reach 105C).

Once the jam is ready, let it cool for about 15 mins before ladling into warm sterilised jars and sealing.

Will keep for 6 months in a cool, dark place.

By Jenny Dutton Plans for the ‘Concert in the Park’ at the Trust are progressing for Sunday 7th September. All are welcome with modestly priced tickets available in advance and on the gates, accompanied children are free.

Gresford Athletic finish their season at Aerospace in the NEWA Challenge cup final. We wish them every success.

You are invited to bring your own picnic food and drink, though there will be a bar, street food and afternoon teas available.

Bring chairs, rugs (and umbrellas!) and enjoy the live music and activities for the children including the ever popular Punch and Judy Show. Village Scarecrows will attend the event with a prize-giving by the Mayor of Wrexham. Gresford Playgroup will be celebrating 50 years of pre-school play experience and learning and are interested to display any photographs parents have to share. Please deliver copies for a mini exhibition to the Trust Office.

Gresford Cricket Club’s pre-season warmup game was played at Whaley Range, Manchester in arctic conditions! All Star Cricket for 5-8 year olds starts soon on Sunday mornings. Outdoor nets have commenced with further details on GCC websites.

A Spring clean of the grounds has taken place to remove building rubble and tree brash. Replacement of the high safety fencing between the Bowls and cricket areas will be completed by early May. Trust land provides excellent sport and recreation areas for all and is looking in good condition. Your help in walking dogs responsibly and on a lead on Trust land is appreciated.

Gresford Craft Group and Wrexham Quilting Circle will be holding their annual exhibition at the Memorial Hall and All Saints’ Church on 18th - 20th June, 10.308pm and on Friday 21st June 10.30-5pm.

There will be a sale of craft, fabrics, plants and tombola with all proceeds to local charities. Refreshments will be available at the Church House and are always popular.

Please look out for the date for the Trust AGM. Notices will be displayed on the village noticeboards and our website.

Ben Gittins who is originally from Wrexham joined in 2014 having previously been in the industry and having read Economics at University. Ben has taken on the role of developing the next generation of Advisers in Hadlow Edwards and is responsible for the current trainee Adviser development programme (which will add 3 new advisers to our existing number by the end of 2020). Every Three Seconds Someone in the World Develops Dementia WELSH SNIPPET BY MATTHEW MURRAY-JAMES, HOME INSTEAD SENIOR CARE In this edition, we will be sharing some tips and ideas about how to communicate with people living with dementia. When communicating with someone with dementia, there are many things to consider, and remember that talking isn’t always the most effective method. Here are some ideas to help with communication: • Acknowledge what the person has said. Even if they don't answer your question, express that you've heard them and encourage them to say more about their answer.

• Use gestures, movement and facial expressions. Physical signs and body language can all convey meaning and help get messages across, especially when speaking becomes more difficult.

• Use Humour. Laughing can help to bring you closer together, and may relieve the pressure.

• Become an active listener. Listening is a very important aspect of engaging with someone with dementia. Look for non-verbal cues such as facial expressions and body language to try and understand what they are trying to tell you.

• Let the person express their feelings. If the person is feeling sad, don’t try and persuade them away from that feeling. Showing you care by just listening is sometimes the best method of communicating.

• Use physical contact to provide reassurance. Holding or patting the person's hand or putting your arm around them might be all that is needed to let them know you are there for them.

• Use visual clues. Writing your messages down or using objects or pictures to help the person understand could help alleviate a breakdown in communication.

Communication difficulties can be frustrating and upsetting for people with dementia as well as their caregivers and loved ones. Active listening, non-verbal communication, visual props and laughter are just a few ways to help alleviate some of the tensions you may experience when engaging with those living with dementia.

It’s not every day you get an email asking you to be one of 18 artists selected to promote the final season of a TV series as big as Game of Thrones, and when it happened, if I’d been sitting on a chair I may well have fallen off! I’ve been creating sculptures for the last 17 years from standing tree stumps and felled timber. It’s an incredible feeling to make a living from doing what you love, and yet it’s been hard work at times, with long days and moments where I wanted to throw in the towel and get a ‘normal job’. Any self employed person will agree that no matter what you’re doing, the business has a tendency to dominate your life!

I’ve flitted between “I don’t deserve this”, and “I’m proud of what I’ve achieved” on an equal basis over the years. I’ve also had my fair share of failures and successes. Every failure is a stepping stone to success or so they say, which is much harder to hear when you’re a day away from not being able to pay the mortgage and awaiting payment from a client!

Despite the difficulties of a self sustaining lifestyle, I can honestly say it has been the best time of my life. Having a wonderfully supportive wife is the reason I’m still sane and Liz is great at bringing me back down to earth when needed!

Back to the present, and the moment I received the email from a marketing agency in New York, with the strange enquiry, “We’d like you to be involved in a project for one of our clients, but we need you to sign this NDA first!” As a fan of the show it made my day as you can imagine, and was made even better by the brief. HBO wanted to use fans of the show who in following the series had produced artwork based on the characters and themes.

The brief was simple, I was to receive a prop from the original series and design something around it. My prop was the dragon eggs, and their request was that I design a display casing for the eggs as if they were being presented to Daenerys for the first time. Whether this means something to you or not, Game of Thrones is the most popular series of its kind in the world, and has a huge following, meaning at the very least, my name and my work are being promoted to a huge audience!

By the time you read this, I’ll have been given permission to share the pictures and videos on social media, so please take a moment to look at what I created!

Driving Eyesight Rules More Than Meets The Eye A proportion of the motorists that require glasses or contact lenses while driving are flouting rules that could see them land hefty punishments and penalties. According to new research, one in eight drivers who require glasses are deciding to do without them. This is of course, illegal and can see the offending motorist penalised with some hefty punishments. If a driver's eyesight does not meet the minimum standards required of them on the roads then they could be fined, banned from the road and in severe cases land prison time.

Eyesight rules: 1. You must be able to read a car number plate from 20 meters.

2. You must meet the ‘Snellen Scale’ for visual acuity, which is the chart of letters in your eye test. This is set at least 0.5 (6/12) 3. You must have an adequate field of vision. If you don’t meet these standards you are obliged to inform the DVLA. 4. You must wear glasses or contact lenses every time you drive if you need them to meet the ‘standards of vision for driving’.

5. Driving without your glasses when you need them is not just illegal, but dangerous.

The fact that it is illegal means that driving without your glasses will invalidate your insurance.

6. Given that a person’s eyesight can change a significant amount in as little a six months or a year, it is recommend motorists have their eyes tested regularly to make sure they remain safe on the road and reduce the risk of road traffic accidents.

7. You must tell DVLA if you’ve got any problem with your eyesight that affects both of your eyes, or the remaining eye if you only have one eye. This doesn’t include being short or long sighted or colour blind. You also don’t need to say if you’ve had surgery to correct short sightedness and can meet the eyesight standards.

8. Selfie Takers Are Damaging Their Skin TAKING a selfie can be as damaging to the skin as smoking, drinking and too much sunshine. Respected clinician Sara Cheeney warned the electromagnetic rays from smart phones and tablets will speed up the ageing process, including wrinkles and brown spots.

Nurse Practitioner Sara, owner of Pure Perfection Clinic in Rossett, has seen a rise in patients who admit to being regular selfie takers suffering accelerated skin cell damage.

She can even identify the hand a person uses to hold their phone by examining which side of the face is worst affected.

“The results are quite alarming,” said Sara, a former nurse who opened her first clinic in the village, on the border of Wrexham and Chester, 10 years ago. “I get a lot of bloggers and patients who take selfies every day coming to me and complaining about the issue, and it’s an issue which seems to be getting worse. The blue rays from smart phone screens can do more damage than too much sunshine, so I would urge youngsters in particular to be extra careful.”

“With millions of teenagers glued to Instagram, Tik Tok, Snapchat and other social media platforms the risk of pre-mature skin ageing will be common in the years ahead”, said Sara.

What’s The Fuss About Fats?

It’s true we all need some fat in out diet, it provides us with energy and vitamins such as A and D, however most of us are eating too much fat, two - three times more than we need. You may be surprised to hear that all types of fat and oils give us around 9kcal per gram regardless of what type of fat it is, so a tablespoon of oil, butter, or spread gives us around 235kcals.

Therefore, you could assume that its OK to eat any type of fat you like, however that’s not the whole story, yes we are all interested in how many calories we get from our food but with regards to fat there are other health implications that make some fats better than others.

So, what types of fats are there?

Simply put there are two main types of fat found in foods;- saturated and unsaturated.

Saturated fat can cause the levels of cholesterol in our blood to rise which can lead to coronary heart disease and strokes.

An easy way to spot a saturated fat is that it is solid at room temperature and usually comes from animal sources. One exception to this rule is coconut oil. Although coconut oil has had a lot of press lately it is a saturated fat and has a higher saturated fat content than butter! Coconut oil has 82 per cent saturates, butter has 52 per cent saturates. Both these fats are high in saturated fat and their consumption should therefore be limited.

Other sources of saturated fats are, fat on meats, cream, palm oil, cakes, biscuits and chocolate.

Healthier fats and where to find them Unsaturated fats are a far healthier choice, usually liquid at room temperature and plant based. Good sources are sunflower oil/spreads, olive oils/spreads, rapeseed oil, nuts, seeds and avocado.

These types of fats don’t raise cholesterol levels. A good swap would be to replace butter with rapeseed oil, a monosaturated fat, good for heart health and cheap to buy too!

Oily fish provides Omega 3 a group of unsaturated fats great for out heart health.

Aim for two portions of fish per week, one of which should be oily. Sardines, mackerel, pilchards, salmon and trout are all really good sources of Omega 3.

So being smart about fats is easy as 1,2,3 1. Limit total fat intake 2. Choose unsaturated fats where possible 3. Include 1 portion of oily fish per week

Hugh Jones Councillor for Rossett Planning: An application has been received to redevelop Gamford Farm, there is a current approval for eight semi detached houses which expires in November of this year. The revised scheme anticipates eight plots involving a mixture of refurbishment and redevelopment. This is likely to be determined by the Planning Committee in May or June.

Following on from my reference to the Village Developing its own plan, The Community Council is forming a subcommittee to begin work and is seeking four volunteers from the community with an interest in planning. Residents with specialist knowledge are particularly welcome. The Council are seeking two residents from each of the two polling districts, Burton and Allington. The Planning Inspector has upheld the decision by WCBC Planning Committee to reject the proposal for redevelopment.

I anticipate a revised scheme will be submitted.

Many residents are asking me about the latest on the former Golf Course. Currently all appears to be on hold, no formal application has been submitted and my personal opinion is that developers are awaiting the outcome of the Examination in Public of LDP2 which is due to start this summer. This will involve our local challenge to the proposal to include the Harwoods Lane, Chester Road site and would also give an opportunity for developers to ask the Inspector to consider other sites. The decision is entirely down to the Planning Inspector.

Traffic: We are still awaiting final implementation of the 20mph scheme around Harwoods Lane and the fitting of the electronic speed warning signs on Chester Road and Holt Road. The delay is due to manpower issues but I am assured the scheme will be completed within the coming weeks.

Darland Lane: Following discussions with residents, I have asked officers not to replace the remaining speed humps from the previous scheme. The aim of the humps is to reduce the speed adjacent to the exit from Darland School and the current placements meet that criteria.

Speed Humps are always controversial, and most surveys end up with 50/50 in favour, against. A bit like Brexit.

On this subject, I have been asked to consider speed calming measures on Burton Road, there is no doubt that excessive speed is an issue on a road with limited pavement. The blocking of the pavement by parked vehicles causes significant issues to disabled people and people with push chairs being forced on to the road. It also has the impact of increasing traffic speed on this road. Sadly, it is often local residents who ignore the speed warning light. Your views on this would be appreciated.

Parking Recently, I’ve had a few complaints about cars being illegally parked on footpaths, making it difficult for those with wheelchairs or prams to get passed. Please be aware of this potential hazard when parking and be sure to keep pathways clear. You may have also noticed yellow lines have now been installed in certain locations around the village, these have been installed because of on-going parking problems.

Marford Hill There seems to be a continuing problem with cars failing to stop at the pedestrian crossing at the top of Marford Hill and in some cases, cars are also failing to adhere to the 30 mile per hour speed limit. I have raised this issue with the Highway Department in the hope that some improvement can be made to the area.

Due to the amount of complaints being received about speeding, you may have noticed an increase in the presence of speed cameras on Marford Hill. Hopefully, this will start to make a difference and those who are speeding may finally start to get the message.

Street lights There’s been a few issues with streetlights in the area recently. Most of these have now been fixed but if you do notice a light not working, please report it on the Wrexham Council website. If no action is taken, let me know and I will chase it up.

Andrew Atkinson Councillor for Gresford Spring Clean Cymru. I organised a litter pick as part of Spring Clean Cymru and with a group of about 10 volunteers we collected around 25 bags of rubbish and fly-tipping from Griffin Hill, Springfield Lane and around the park.

I’d like to thank all the volunteers including the scouts and Gresford Spar for their help and time, it’s much appreciated. I’ll update soon with the date of the next litter pick.

Roads. The roads remain dreadful particularly High Street and Pant Lane and I’m constantly logging potholes and making the case for re-surfacing which is so badly needed.

Gresford Roundabout. I’ve had assurance that this is still down to be patched and the lines repainted. It was delayed due to the bad weather but I’m pressing for a new date as we speak.

Vicarage Lane. This has still not progressed but I remain opposed to the development and will continue to challenge it if the developer still wishes to pursue it. It’s an inappropriate site due to Highways constraints before you even look at the infrastructure issues surrounding the demand on our health centre.

Can You Help the Scouts? Many of you will remember an incident of anti-social behaviour at the Scout Hut back in January, there was a lot of concern and residents wanting to help out however they could.

Since the incident the District Commissioner for Wrexham Scouts has met with 1st Gresford Scouts and had a very productive meeting where it was clear that they had satisfactorily reviewed their risk assessments following what happened.

One of the other findings was that the group is desperate for more adult support.

This support can only come from the village of Gresford and surrounding areas.

Your Pet Can Become a Hero Few pet owners realise that behind the scenes, donor pets are a vital component in making an incredible gift of life to help other animals in need.

Now, the owners of deceased pets can bequeath their pet’s body to an organisation to harvest tissue and bone that is then used to repair injuries in pets.

Veterinary Tissue Bank (VTB), Europe’s first and only tissue bank for pets is based in Chirk, Wrexham. To date, VTB has helped nearly 10,000 dogs and cats with bone transplants.

Bone is used to repair broken bones, treat bone cancer, fuse arthritic joints, etc.

Tissue donation can only take place at the end of the pet’s life, however, pet owners can register their pets to become tissue donors, a scheme similar to human organ and tissue register. The owner is then issued with a Pet Donor Card which helps to facilitate the donation process.

Any dog or cat can become a donor, but certain medical criteria need to be met, such as vaccination history and exclusion of certain diseases. The vet can advise on eligibility.

At the time of donation, the owner will have a chance to withdraw consent, as well as the option to request for ashes returned without any cost being incurred.

Larry the Lurcher has helped the lives of 83 other dogs.

Larry, a 15-year-old Lurcher, was a rescue dog and rehomed to Marion Davies over 13 years ago. They had a very close bond.

When Larry began to fail, Marion thought: “I was realistic about Larry’s aging process and knew that he wasn’t going to be with me for much longer. I loved him dearly, but also felt that when he died it was important to go to help someone else-whether that is another human, in our case, or another animal in their case.”

Marion explained “It’s hard when your loved pet is dying but in some cases the knowledge that a beloved pet’s departure has actually been able to help other pets find a new lease of life can make the grief more bearable and that was certainly the case for me.”

In Larry’s case, his tissues went on to help 83 other dogs in need of surgery.

Mirroring the same principles and many of the supply problems as human tissue donation, the tissue bank has an urgent need for more pet donors.

RSPB Hedge Cutting and The Law

There are certain laws regarding hedge cutting which you should be aware of to ensure there is no damage to active bird nests.

Some mature hedgerows are protected by law but this wouldn’t normally apply to garden hedges. We recommend not cutting hedges and trees between March and August as this is the main breeding season for nesting birds, although some birds may nest outside of this period.

It is an offence under Section 1 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act of 1981 to intentionally take, damage or destroy the nest of any wild bird while it is in use or being built, or to intentionally kill, injure or take chicks or adults, or intentionally take or destroy any eggs.

It is an intentional act, for example, if you or your neighbour know there is an active nest in the hedge and still cut the hedge, damaging or destroying the nest or contents in the process.

If someone is cutting a hedge during this period, speak to them and politely mention the risk to birds’ nests, and the laws protecting nests. If they proceed, and you know there is an active nest at risk, contact the police on 101, and ask for a reference number.
