As COVID restrictions gradually ease, there’s so much to look forward to - from going to restaurants to spending quality time with friends and family.

For many though, there’s one major thing to look forward to: hugging! If, like me, you’ve been hankering for a hug, last month people in England and support ‘bubbles’ in Wales were officially allowed to embrace each other again, instead of awkwardly waving from a distance, or via a video call.

If you are an avid gardener, you may be inspired by our gardening tips this month to get your borders, beds and vegetable patches growing. All gardeners know bees are vital for the cropping of most fruits and some vegetables, so it’s important we all encourage bees into our gardens throughout the year. Read our article to understand which are the best flowers, rich in pollen and nectar, to attract bees to your garden.

Community Radio is Coming Back The popular radio station, Calon FM, is coming back on air and they want everyone to be part of it. The station ceased broadcasting in January after serving the local area for 13 years. However, a group of former presenters and ex-staff were determined to revive Calon under new community ownership. Their community company, Wrexham Community Broadcasting, has secured the OFCOM licence and has plans to increase broadcasting hours from a brand new, purpose-built town centre location.

Director Andy Snowden said: “Calon means ‘heart’ in Welsh and we intend to be at the heart of the community with a new base right in the town centre. We’ll be building on our long-standing reputation with new programmes and added features. Rossett Hedgehog Rock Hunt Hello from Rossett Hedgehog helpers. I’m Helen and I volunteer alongside Mandi Roberts of the Wirral Hedgehog Hospital. I foster hedgehogs that have been sick or injured, getting them fit and well to be returned back to the wild. Last winter I fostered 17 hedgehogs and rescued numerous from the village and the surrounding area. Hwb Yr Orsedd Withdrawn Rossett Community Council in consultation with the Hwb Yr Orsedd board have decided to temporarily withdraw the planning applications for the demolition of the toilet block and construction of the Community Hub. Although the Planning Officer was generally supportive of the proposals, they have requested that the scale and design proposed be revisited. This will now take place and in due course revised plans will be resubmitted.

Holt Community Gardeners Holt Community Gardeners have been awarded a third grant to support the community of Holt. The award will be used to buy four new, low level, flower planters to be located on the Cross, and 10 half barrier planters for the railings on the corner of Church Street and the Cross. And a small amount of money will be used to start a sculpture trail.

Bob Campbell from Holt Community Gardeners told us: “As we come out of lockdown we recognise the damage this pandemic has inflicted on our society. We are proud to say that Holt Community Gardeners have been able to offer an outlet for many people during the pandemic, even for those confined to their homes. We hope to help heal the damage of the pandemic and lift the hearts and souls of those in our community and our many visitors.”

Gresford Community Council Latest News

Wrexham County Borough Council (WCBC) has agreed to grant Gresford Community Council a lease for Marford Play Area. Once agreed, residents will see improved maintenance. We hope the new goal posts installed at Marford Play Area will result in many happy hours playing footie this summer! Just a note of caution – the goals are not climbing frames, so for your own safety do not climb on them!

Gresford Health Centre We continue to oppose the closure of Gresford Health Centre but are pleased to have persuaded Wrexham Council and the Health Board of the need for adequate signage to Llay Health Centre.

Community Agent Our Community Agent, Ruth, is available for anyone over 50 who’s feeling low or a bit vulnerable. If that applies to you or anyone you know, contact Ruth and she’ll see what can be done to help. Ruth’s planning Walking Football, and a Wellness & Walking group. Interested? Litter Litter and fly tipping is a growing problem.

If you spot any dumped rubbish, please report it through Wrexham Council’s Streetscene number and they will collect it: call: 01978 298989 or 01978 292000.

If you do have any large items that you are paying to dispose of, please ask to see the ‘Waste Management Operatives’ license.

This will discourage rogue traders who dispose of items illegally.

Crime Please report concerns about crime and anti-social behaviour to the Police on 101.

The Police do not monitor social media, but a 101 report can be followed up.

Picnic bench The council is planning to install new benches at Allington Park and a picnic bench on Marford Play Area. We would like to know what you think about this.

A Story About a Smile Q: What does a scrum–half for RGC that can’t play rugby do during lockdown?

A: Smile Despite the frustration of not being able to play the contact sport he was passionate about, former Welsh under-18's rugby player, Efan, was not going to let it defeat him. ‘Always look for the positives’ is Efan’s motto, so he turned a desperate situation in to a window of opportunity by investing in a winner’s smile.

Walk Wales Castle to Castle Following the huge success of its virtual Walk Wales challenge last year – the Wales Air Ambulance is delighted to give participants a chance to take part again.

Last year, during lockdown, over 500 people laced up their boots to take part in their virtual Walk Wales challenge – raising an incredible £32,000!

This year’s theme is ‘castles,’ and includes the I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!

Gwrych Castle. The challenge allows walkers a chance to set themselves a target based on the number of steps they could achieve during June. Each target is the equivalent of a walk between iconic Welsh castles and can be achieved at home, in the garden or during exercise, taking the dog for a walk – and even going up and down the stairs!

The choices are as follows: • Dinas Bran Castle to Caergwrle Castle - 16 miles (36,000 steps) • Caernarfon Castle to Gwrych Castle - 35 miles (80,000 steps) • Carreg Cennen to Pembroke Castle - 50 miles (114,000 steps) • Caerphilly Castle to Llansteffan Castle - 75 miles (171,500 steps) • Powis Castle to Kidwelly Castle - 100 miles (229,000) steps • Harlech Castle to Cardiff Castle - 150 miles (343,000 steps) Entry is £10 however participants are encouraged to set up their own fundraising page. All participants will receive a locally made, sustainable medal and e-certificate for their efforts.

Serving Wales, saving lives The Wales Air Ambulance covers the whole of Wales every single day and can be there for anyone in Wales within 20 minutes.

Each year their helicopters attend around 2,500 missions, covering rural countryside, bustling towns and cities. This includes the length of the Welsh coastline and across vast Welsh mountain ranges. The four airbase operations are in Caernarfon, Llanelli, Welshpool and Cardiff and are ready to saves lives wherever needed.

The past year has been a very challenging time for everyone, including the Wales Air Ambulance Charity. Throughout the pandemic, they have remained on standby for the people of Wales, supporting the NHS and playing a big part in the medical response to COVID-19.

In December 2020 the charity achieved its aim of operating a 24/7 service. In order to do this they need to raise £8 million every year to keep the helicopters in the air.

There are several ways that the public can continue to support the Wales Air Ambulance. These include online donations, signing up to the Charity’s Lifesaving Lottery or by coming up with their own innovative ways to fundraise at home.

How to Attract Bees to Your Garden Bees play a vital role in the garden and they’re an essential part in the pollination of a plant during its life cycle. Bees visit flowers to collect nectar and pollen, which they then use as food for themselves and to help feed the larvae in their hives or nests.

Insect pollination can also be carried out by many other pollinating insects including butterflies and moths and are essential for the cropping of most fruits and some vegetables. Therefore, as bees are so vital, it’s important that we all encourage bees into our gardens throughout the year.

One of the simplest ways to attract bees to visit your garden is by growing flowers rich in pollen and nectar. Bees are more drawn to blue, purple and yellow flowers and therefore, find them the most appealing.

Bees can see the colour purple more vividly than the majority of other colours.

Fun facts about bees: • Bees can fly as far as five miles for food, however an average distance would be less than a mile from the hive.

• There are over 20,000 different species of bee, found on every continent in the World, except Antarctica.

• Bees use the position of the sun to help them navigate.

• Queen: One Queen runs the whole hive, she can produce up to 2,000 eggs a day.

• Workers: All worker bees are female, their flying top speed is 20mph.

• Drones: These are the male bees, and their purpose is to mate with the Queen.

Drones have bigger eyes.

• A bee produces a teaspoon of honey (about 5 grams) in her lifetime.

• Bees have five eyes and six legs.

As bees are most active between March and September, it’s great to choose a selection of plants that will flower across the different months of most of the season so you can attract bees all year round.

Early-summer flowers Aquilegia, Delphinium, Foxglove, Snapdragon, Geranium.

Mini wildflower meadow If you have the room in your garden, why not create a mini wildflower meadow in your garden using a variety of flowers in your garden? Bees will certainly love this!

Provide Water Just like us humans, bees and other pollinators need water to survive. A pond is a natural and safe source of water that allows bees to easily drink from.

By Rev. Hugh Linn Despite the bad news that butterfly numbers are in decline throughout the UK last month, scarcely a day passed without any passing through our garden. The first to appear at the end of April was a Holly Blue well camouflaged on a forget-me-not.

These attractive little butterflies have been seen almost daily, as have Orange-Tips and Speckled Woods.

Three more striking species, Peacock, Small Tortoiseshell and Red Admiral, allowed good views by sunbathing on the lawn with wings wide open. We have also been visited by what the British Trust for Ornithology garden birdwatch survey simply labels ‘unidentified white butterflies’ (known to a lot of us simply as Cabbage Whites).

I am always happy to hear of other people's observations especially additions to our local list.

On 6th May an unusual bird was spotted in a Burton garden - a Firecrest. Along with their related species, the Goldcrest, these are our smallest British birds measuring three and a half inches long. The Firecrest's basic body colour is greenish but it has a distinctive head pattern - an orange crown over black and white stripes above the eyes. Another bird rarely seen here nowadays is the Barn Owl. I had the good fortune to have a very brief sighting of one of these ghostly white birds recently flying over Burton Green fields at dusk.

Llay Pool is always worth a visit. In Spring, it hosts migratory wetland birds as well as residents such as Greylags, Canada Geese

and Lapwings. Recent sightings there have included Common Sandpipers, Shovelers, Little Ringed Plovers, Pintails and White Wagtails. At least five pairs of Lapwings have been observed displaying. Lapwing display is mainly aerial as birds fly around (drunkenly to human eyes!) flapping erratically and constantly changing direction while calling noisily. The distinctive call is ‘Peewit’ which gives them one of the names by which they are commonly known.

The name ‘Lapwing’ is derived from their flight style and their third common name is ‘Green Plover’ as they are largely green and members of the Plover family. As local breeders they are becoming scarcer.

A solitary bird was seen displaying over Gresford Flash on 2nd May.

Legal Advice Children in Care

By EssentialsMAG legal advice contributor CAROL McGUIRE Whilst it is very sad to say this, there are many children who have been placed into care, as a result of their Parents not being able to cope with their situation.

The Local Authority can only take action when they can satisfy the Court that the ‘Threshold Criteria’ is met. This covers issues such as the mental health of a Parent; if they have been subjected to violence; neglect; drug or alcohol abuse, to mention but a few.

Parents should not chastise themselves for this. They are often depressed by the circumstances surrounding them and of traumas they have suffered. Sometimes the break from the children, although deeply upsetting, gives them time to reflect on their lives and to make changes that may result in their children being returned to them. However, there is a need in the interim, for someone to care for them.

When children are taken into care, Social Services will speak with the relatives of the children, to ascertain if they would look after them. In some cases it's thought that the person nominated might be the appropriate longer term carers.

They will obviously assess the person/s to see if they are capable of so doing and on occasions will suggest that they become what is called a ‘Special Guardian’ which means that a relative eg grandparent/brother/sister can

put their names forward to have longer term care of the children in question. It doesn't necessarily mean that they have to look after the children indefinitely but, they are there to protect them and make decisions as to their normal day to day routines, with the assistance of Social Services.

Sometimes people in that category are concerned as to how their legal costs to acquire the Guardianship order would be met. If they are not eligible for Legal Aid, then the Local Authority might finance the same. In the same way, they may be entitled to financial allowances for keeping the children.

Most importantly of all, is that they need to obtain legal advice from someone who specialises in this field.

They will then be given more detailed advice according to their circumstances.

With the larger straw, cut it in half and tape up one end to seal it. Then tape it to the back of the rocket.

STEP 4:

Insert the smaller straw inside the larger straw and blow on it. The rocket should then lift off!

Sarah Atherton MP Member of Parliament for Wrexham As lockdown restrictions continue to ease, it has been wonderful to see Wrexham businesses start to flourish once again. The high street has been as busy as ever and we have all begun to get used to queueing for things again!

The role of MP is multi-faceted: from legislating to lobbying, from promoting charities to standing up for constituents.

One of the best things about it is the chance to support local businesses and help them to thrive. During the lockdown this meant putting pressure on both the UK and Welsh Governments to reduce the tax burden carried by business owners. As one example, I was pleased that the Chancellor’s Budget earlier this year continued the UK-wide support for hospitality through the reduction in VAT, which has helped many businesses in this sector get back on their feet. Since restrictions have eased, it also meant ensuring that Wrexham businesses were not disadvantaged in relation to their competitors across the border as restrictions on each side sometimes didn’t align.

Today, it means meeting with business owners and workers to find out how I can best represent them at both a local and a national level. One thing that people regularly raise with me is how easy it is for their customers to access their services.

This is just as important whether customers are local, national or international. On the international side, I have spent a lot of time recently working with the Chamber of Commerce and the UK Government to ensure that some of our fantastic

multinational corporations are able to export their goods without being hit by undue tariffs.

When it comes to national brands, I have also been working with the Minister for the UK Internal Market to ensure the smooth transfer of goods across the four nations of the UK, irrespective of local lockdown rules.

More locally, I have been working with the Council and other stakeholders to ensure that Wrexham businesses are able to accept customers as easily as possible. This means ensuring that the town is COVIDcompliant and that businesses struggling to access information on how to operate safely can get it. It also means putting in bids for improved rail links to other areas, helping with plans for improved cycle lanes, and trying to ensure people don’t get hit with harsh parking fines when they visit the town centre. Strawberry Mascarpone Tart INGREDIENTS

SERVES 6-8

FOR THE FILLING

FOR THE CRUMB CASE

1 large free-range egg, separated 1 tbsp caster sugar 250g/9oz mascarpone 2 drops vanilla extract 250g/9oz fresh strawberries

75g/3oz butter 250g/9oz sweet oat biscuits

METHOD You will need a tart tin with a removable bottom. (We used a 20cm round tin but you can make it in something shorter and wider if that is what you have).

For the crumb case, melt the butter in a small saucepan. Place the biscuits in a food processor and process to fine crumbs (alternatively, place in a plastic bag and bash with a rolling pin).

Mix the crumbs thoroughly with the melted butter and spoon into the loosebottomed flan tin. Press the crumbs firmly over the base and up the sides of the tin to cover completely. Transfer to the fridge to chill until firm.

For the filling, put the egg yolk into a bowl with the caster sugar and beat for a few seconds until thoroughly mixed. Add the mascarpone and beat until thoroughly combined. Stir in the vanilla extract.

In a separate bowl, beat the egg white with a clean whisk until stiff peaks form when the whisk is removed from the bowl. Gently fold the egg white into the mascarpone mixture.

Remove the biscuit case from the fridge. Spoon the mascarpone mixture into the biscuit case and gently smooth the top with a spatula. Arrange the sliced strawberries on top of the mascarpone.

Transfer to the fridge and chill. Remove the tart from the fridge 20 minutes before serving.

Stand-up Paddle Boarding Water Safety Stand-up paddle boarding (SUP) has become very popular over recent years especially as COVID Restrictions ease.

Like all water sports SUP has risks that can trap the unwary.

Paula from Mindful SUP advises: • Always check the weather on the day, never go out in strong winds, I do not go on the water in winds over 12mph.

• If you are heading to the coast, check the tide times and never paddle on an offshore wind!

• If you are going somewhere for the first time seek out local knowledge, it is invaluable. If in doubt, don't go out.

• Always tell someone where you are going and what time to expect your return.

• If possible paddle with someone else.

• Take a charged mobile phone with you in a waterproof case for emergencies.

• Check your board and kit for damage.

• Always wear your leash!

• Dress appropriately for the water temperature and weather conditions and I recommend wearing a buoyancy aid.

• Take drinks and snacks to keep fuelled and hydrated.

• Practise self-rescue techniques in a safe environment - learn how to get back on your board from the water. Also practise prone paddling using your arms in case you lose your paddle.

• Be mindful of other water craft, boats, jet skis, rowing boats etc.

• Educate yourself on water etiquette on the UK rivers we paddle on the right hand side.

• Appreciate any wildlife you come across from a safe distance.

The Evolving Brand Identity

By JULIE GREGORY From keeping up with technological progression for a digital arena, to promoting a brand’s values as well as its products, nothing stands still for long in the world of advertising. A brand’s logo epitomises the brand itself. It is the easily recognisable bit of a brand story. Think of leading brands that you come across every day in your life. Coca Cola, Heinz and Pears Soap, for example.

Each of these brands began life more than 100 years ago (Pears Soap, more than 200 years ago!), so there is no way their brand identities would have stood this length of time without development.

As marketeers, not only do we look at how a brand could be perceived, we look at where it should be promoted in order to reach its target audience. And from original billboards, to paid for ads on social media, when a brand starts to look dated or doesn’t keep up with the latest advertising platforms, the products or services it sells are also perceived to be outdated.

A quick look at Google images will show you how time has changed the look of these brands. But with Pears Soap, while the brand identity has evolved over time, the product itself still has the same characteristic that set it apart from its competitors in 1789.

It was the first mass produced translucent soap and by choosing Lillie Langtry to be the face of the

brand, Lillie became the first woman to endorse a commercial product. Lillie was well known for her beautiful skin and is thought to have been paid by her weight – £1 sterling for each pound she weighed (hence the term ‘pound for pound’). Lillie received £132. Now, product endorsements by celebrities are commonplace and can increase the celebrity’s annual income by a small fortune! Take Roger Federer for example who, between 2019 and 2020, was the world’s highest paid athlete earning himself a pre-tax total of £86.2m - around £81m came from endorsements.

But what factors can impact a brand identity? Negative customer feedback; changes in the marketplace or even, a refresh of the team behind the brand. All in all, advertising itself is constantly changing and a brand has to keep up or get left behind in the crush. Hurrah for the Pears Soaps of this world who have been ‘keeping up’ for over 200 years!

Gresford Trust Newsdesk

By Jenny Dutton We are fortunate in our community that we have such varied access to outdoor space, not least recreation areas at the Trust. Easy local access to the restorative power of green spaces has such a positive effect on our physical and mental health. However, the Trust grounds and buildings have been subject to several incidents of anti-social behaviour in recent weeks. Sadly, this reflects a trend experienced by other areas of the village.

As a result of these incidents which include physical attacks against Trust members, we have been forced to invest in upgraded security equipment; a costly exercise which will reduce our ability to improve other areas of Trust facilities.

Following a review with North Wales Police we have supplied images taken during these incidents. Any future incidents will be reported immediately, and images given to the police for action to be taken against the individuals concerned.

We have also been assured that an increased Police presence at the Trust will be in evidence to monitor this behaviour.

This is a thoroughly unpleasant and totally unnecessary process for the Trustees, who give their time freely to maintain the facilities.

As Trustees, we are committed to keeping the facilities open and in the best possible condition for our community to enjoy. The Hall and grounds belong to the village and we would ask everyone to help us stamp out this unnecessary level of nuisance.

The restrictions of COVID-19 have had a significant impact on the cash flow of the Trust as a social enterprise. Trustees, mindful of the need to ensure the continued viability of this community facility were approached by Wales and West Utilities Limited (WWU) to consider a long-term lease - not a sale - for a small Gas Governor Station on the former basketball court to the rear of the Groundsman’s store. Planning permission has now been granted.

The Trust has received a £1,000 grant from AVOW Voluntary Services Emergency Fund, funded by the Welsh Government.

This will help pay for additional tables to enable social distancing when groups return to the hall and a cleaning machine for maintaining floor hygiene.

Alyn Family Doctors Latest News Last year the eConsult service was introduced, offering an innovative way to seek advice via an online form on our website. Whilst previously there were caps on our workload once appointments had all been allocated, the introduction of eConsult has meant that now patient encounters are theoretically limitless.

Undoubtedly, there are huge benefits to this increased accessibility. However, we would encourage patients to think carefully before using it. Could it be possible to allow a little time to see if things resolve naturally? Could any self-care strategies or a Pharmacy consultation help? It is not uncommon for a GP to have two patients each day whose symptoms have resolved and admit they perhaps filled the form in prematurely. Many common infections get better within a certain timeframe without the need for antibiotics, if the body is allowed to work as nature intended.

We do appreciate that there are some vulnerable patient groups with chronic disease who should seek advice more promptly though. In addition we emphasise that, despite the pandemic, we want to hear from anyone with symptoms suspicious of serious illness including those suffering with mental health difficulties.

Many of our Welsh patients will already be aware of the “Common ailments scheme”, a way of obtaining medicines free of charge in any community pharmacy for

26 common minor conditions including back pain, verrucae, scabies, head lice, thrush, chickenpox and conjunctivitis.

Consultations with a community pharmacist are held in private consultation rooms and the information is fed back to your GP, thereafter.

Our last article (available on the EssentialsMAG website) outlined the concerns about the AstraZeneca vaccine being linked to possible rare blood clots.

At the time, guidance suggested those under 30ys should be offered an alternative. This has recently been extended to include under 40s, so our team is busy cancelling and rescheduling appointments. Financial News with Hadlow Edwards Scrambled ESG Over 30 years ago when I started advising my clients how and where to invest, it was really unusual to have many investors express a real desire to either favour one area - or absolutely wish to avoid another.

As I reflect on the Senedd election result, it is clear this past year has been dominated by the global COVID-19 pandemic. It has affected all our lives and I firmly believe the Welsh Government’s cautious approach in responding to the public health crisis resonated with voters. Thanks to this careful approach, we can now see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Wales’ First Minister, Mark Drakeford, has stated the election result has enabled him to form a ‘stable and progressive’ government. It is an honour to be asked to continue to serve in government at this critical time in our nation’s history. As we start to look beyond the pandemic, I look forward to playing a part in our nation’s recovery as the Minister for Rural Affairs and North Wales, and Trefnydd.

The hard work starts now. Over the next Senedd term, the new Welsh Government has pledged to help our NHS get back on track by creating a new medical school in North Wales. It will pay our care workers the Real Living Wage and fund up to 1,800 additional tutoring staff in schools to make sure our children are not left behind.

Our young people will also be offered a guarantee of work, education or training as we look to rebuild after COVID-19.

More specifically in Wrexham, the Welsh Government will create a national football museum and, having already invested £25m, it is determined to redevelop the area of the town centred around the Mold Road as part of the Wrexham Gateway project.

I will continue to champion these projects, as well as work to secure the additional investment our town needs as we look to bounce back after the pandemic.

Gresford Cricket Club Latest News

Much to the delight of everybody involved with cricket, at Gresford the 2021 season got off to a slightly belated start on 1st May when both our senior teams had excellent wins against Northop Cricket Club.

Like all voluntary organisations the last year has been difficult. The help given to us by Cricket Wales and the North Wales Cricket League together with Gresford Trust has been most appreciated. Without their guidance and support we wouldn’t have started our season so soon.

We still have some issues, of course, COVID compliancy guidance seem to change weekly, and the well publicised anti-social behaviour around the Memorial Hall certainly doesn’t help.

We run three senior teams, junior age group teams and a ladies team. All abilities are welcome to join.

Fundraising is difficult at the moment due to the pandemic… and we have bills to pay!

Imagining a Brighter Future

By EssentialsMAG environment contributor ROB RENOUF Conversations around the climate and ecological emergency often centre on sacrifices needed to avoid a terrible future. Whilst fear can provide motivation for change, it may also lead to paralysis and despondency.

A desire for alternative, more positive visions of the future has led to the emergence of solarpunk.

So what is solarpunk? It’s a label that’s been given to a movement/community centred around imagining a more sustainable future. Solarpunk has found expression in many art forms, including literature, fashion and architecture. A prefigurative element within solarpunk takes it beyond fantasy and fiction. What prefiguration means is enacting the changes you would like to see; and by doing this showing that a different world is possible. The hope is to inspire further change, instead of relying on fear to motivate action.

The solarpunk label reflects both this positive outlook and other elements within it. Rather than rejecting technology, solarpunk embraces its use where this enables us to live more sustainably. Solar energy embodies many of its central themes - a green, infinite source of power, freely available to everyone.

Inclusivity and equality are prominent strands within the solarpunk vision, along with rejection of unsustainable consumption. The punk part of the

name reflects the challenges it presents to some aspects of our current way of life.

Possibly the closest thing you’ll find to a mainstream depiction of a solarpunk future is the land of Wakanda in Marvel’s Black Panther.

However, a key point is that it’s also about what we do in the here and now. Anyone can be part of the solarpunk movement today, through activities such as sourcing clothing sustainably or rewilding our garden - it’s simply about exploring ways of living in greater harmony with nature.

The future we’re presented with is often so bleak that people want to look away; solarpunk aims to provide hope, through an alternative inspiring vision. In a recent survey less than 10% of people wanted life to return to normal after lockdown. Many had noticed positive differences such as improved air quality, more wildlife and stronger communities. These changes could become permanent, but we risk drifting back to business as usual.

Solarpunk offers a vision of what the future could be, not what it will be. We can’t rely on others to make it happen - if it’s a future we want, it’s down to all of us to make it real.

Dodleston Local History Group

About ten years ago, Dodleston Local History Group organised an exhibition, 'Dodleston In 100 Objects'. This was based on the excellent programme devised by the British Museum, 'The History of the World in 100 Objects', hosted by Neil MacGregor.

Whilst the local history group has a fine archival record, we were certain there was still much to be learnt about the history of our village.

Several months before the planned exhibition, a call went out to as many residents as possible to search their lofts, wardrobes, cupboards, suitcases and boxes residing under beds, etc and we were staggered by the response. So many artefacts and photographs appeared that had been gathering dust and not seen the light of day for many years! Amongst this great and unique collection, there was one particular coloured photograph that intrigued us all, and it's reproduced here.

It shows the original red telephone kiosk positioned at the junction of Church Road and Kinnerton Road. The Dodleston and District Parish Council notice board is just behind the sandstone wall and to the right of that is a directional sign post. Apart from delineating Dodleston, Pulford and Wrexham it also directs visitors to Throxton Bunions and its castle, instead of Lower Kinnerton!

Investigations as to the creator, or creators of this spoof sign drew a total blank, so a notice was posted in the exhibition, together with the photograph, asking if anyone knew who might have been responsible. The exhibition lasted from Friday through to Sunday. It wasn't until the very last moment on Sunday afternoon, a local resident approached me and confessed to having been one of the architects of this hoax sign.

He said he was one of three young men, who in about 1974 had produced the sign; they had worked on it over several nights in a barn near the church and had managed to surreptitiously put it in place without being caught or recognised. It was certainly very well made and quite convincing. He said it lasted several days before being removed but many visitors to the village were intrigued to know the whereabouts of the castle at Throxton Bunions.

At last, the mystery was solved, but what a great name for a village!

Russell Gilmartin Councillor for Marford & Hoseley COVID At the time of writing this some more restrictions have been lifted, we can now enjoy the inside of hospitality premises, go out and see family and friends again - this has given a lot of people a well needed boost to moral. Whilst we are free to enjoy easing of lockdown, we must still remain cautious, but it is pleasing to see that vaccine rollout seems to be moving along swiftly.

Road repairs I am pleased to see that some of the roads I have been consistently reporting are now listed in the Capital Works Programme 2021-22 for repairs; those being Vicarage Lane, part of Hayfield Drive and Marford Hill. At the moment there is no timeframe for these works to be done but, I will be monitoring it and will keep you informed when I get some dates through.

Parking Recently, I’ve had a few complaints about cars being illegally parked on footpaths, making it difficult for those with wheelchairs or prams to get passed, I do appreciate parking can be a problem for those roads that are currently having essential gas work carried out.

Also, parking by the school has recently caused issues with some residents having their driveway blocked. The council have got enforcement officers that will monitor the area, last thing I want is people getting fines so just be mindful when parking in that area.

Hedges Just a polite reminder to keep hedges trimmed back so they don’t obstruct the footpaths around the Village.

Andrew Atkinson Councillor for Gresford Traffic lights update Sadly the faults on the lights by the Plough are not an easy fix this time and temporary traffic lights will be going up until they are fixed. For a long time I've been assured the lights are going to be refurbished and we will get the crossing I've been asking for too. I've asked that this be brought forward and done now as it seems pointless to me to fix these lights if they are going to be replaced anyway.

We could be stuck with these temporary traffic lights for a very long time, potentially about six weeks or more as even a straightforward fix needs hard-to-get hold of parts etc.

When the temporary traffic lights went up it became apparent that they were causing longer delays so I asked for the timings to be looked at and a crossing to be added for safety. I'll keep you all posted.

Alyn Family Doctors I would encourage anyone with difficulties getting to Llay to formally log this with the practice so that this period isn’t looked back on as problem-free to justify a future closure.

County council budget The budget has been a huge focus this year with a particular focus on Children’s Services. I took over as Lead Member for Children’s Services just over a year ago and have been working with officers to fix some very longstanding issues and set a course of improvement. These improvements have seen an extra 3.5 million pound go into Children’s Social Services in the budget which will hopefully make a real difference to the lives of the most vulnerable.

Bypass closures There have been some bypass closures and will probably be more to address poor road surfaces. I’m told that the old concrete surface was covered over in parts causing issues under the tarmac which has led to potholes etc and that a big programme of works is scheduled to address this.

Clappers Lane flooding Council officers were very helpful in doing some works to try to address this longstanding issue. Whilst not fixed entirely it has made a noticeable difference.

Camera’s for fly tipping I’m investigating the feasibility of official cameras in fly-tipping hot spots such as Springfield/Bottom Lane.
