That time of year when our local villages, clubs and schools host numerous fêtes, festivals and fun days. I don’t know about you, but I find these local events are perfect for catching up with old acquaintances and friends, as you just can’t help but to bump into people you know and have a good old natter!

If like me, you are an avid gardener, you may be inspired by our gardening tips this month to get your borders, beds and vegetable patches growing.

How to Relax in the Time it Takes to Boil a Kettle

Fitting in all the jobs, chores, activities and work that needs doing takes up so much of it. Within this cacophony of activity, its easy to neglect our own health and wellbeing. However, even just finding a few minutes each day – the length of time it takes to boil a kettle will do – to focus on yourself will make a huge difference to your daily life and sense of wellbeing.

Relaxation, meditation, mindfulness – so beautiful, so needed, and it doesn’t have to be complicated either. Relaxation and mindfulness are to the head, what physical exercise is to our bodies. If we want to keep mentally fit and stay on top of our game, we need to be able to relax deeply and live mindfully.

Set yourself a challenge. Try this simple technique five days in a row and see if you can notice a positive change.

• Close your eyes.

• Become aware of the space and sounds around you.

• Become aware of your contact with the ground and the weight of your body.

• Scan through your body, from head to toe, noticing how each part feels.

• Try not to add any thoughts to this, just observe and move on.

• Bring your attention to your breath, focus on each and every inhale and exhale.

• Don’t try to change your breathing, just allow your breath to come and go naturally.

• If you notice your mind has wandered, kindly and calmly bring your attention back to your breathing.

• When you’re ready, open your eyes, and continue (more calmly) with your day…

The Eaton Light Railway In 1894 Hugh Lupus, the first Duke of Westminster had a 15 inch guage railway built to connect Eaton Hall to the Great Western Railway sidings at Balderton. The railway line, which crossed Wrexham Road just north of the hall's main entrance also had a branch line which linked with the estate yard and brickworks at Cuckoo's Nest. The four and a half mile line, designed by Sir Arthur Heywood was completed by May 1896 and cost some ÂŁ6,000.

Three steam locomotives used the line to carry household supplies, especially the many tons of coal needed to heat Eaton Hall, and to deliver materials required at the estate yard at Cuckoo's Nest and to transport bricks from the works there. There was also a 16 seater passenger car which transported guests and many notable people to the shooting parties and social events at Eaton Hall. Names in the visitors' book include Edward VII, Winston Churchill, Baron Rothschild and the King of Spain. A replica of the first locomotive, Katie, named after the Duke's first wife Katherine, can be seen in action on the cricket field on Eaton Hall's open days.

The train operated with a staff of five: an engine driver, two brakemen who rode at the back of the train and two labourers for loading and unloading. It travelled at a speed of 10-12 miles per hour and there were strict rules to be followed. When crossing a road a brakeman went to the centre of the road and waved a red flag to warn oncoming vehicles.

A red lamp was used after dusk. Communication between the driver and the brakeman was via a series of whistle blasts.

After a working life of 51 years the line was discontinued in 1947. Little evidence remains of the original railway apart from the carriage shed which is almost unchanged at Eaton Hall and the engine shed, which is the old building seen beyond the metal gate on the left when entering the Grosvenor Garden Centre.

Krakow - A Stunning City Delmar’s Danielle King is a great admirer of this beautiful and interesting city.

I initially chose Krakow for its history and its cultural richness. I had previously visited several other Eastern European cities and enjoyed exploring their quaint streets and admiring the beautiful buildings. Krakow is no exception but it has so many hidden gems that one visit may not be enough.

The famous Rynek Market Square is the central point in the city where people will congregate and embark on free walking tours, or you can ride in style on a horse and carriage tour. Taking centre stage is the Cloth Hall that, way back in the 14th century, was quite possibly the World’s first shopping mall. Here you will find stalls selling everything from lace to souvenirs.

The city’s famous melodious bugle call takes place from the left tower of St Mary’s Basilica every hour. This tradition is carried out between seven firemen who share a rota to climb an exhausting 239 steps each time they play: they must ring the church bell and play exactly on the hour. Inside the Basilica, you will see the world renowned 15th century wooden altar which took an incredible 12 years to carve.

Wawel Castle lies above the banks of the Vistula river perched on top of a hill and is a must see! You can choose to go inside for a small fee but it is not necessary; you can walk around and appreciate the

architecture from the castle grounds also.

The castle is a symbol of national pride, hope and self-rule and it adds an element of charm to a city which had a difficult past.

If you’ve seen the film ‘Schindler’s List’, you will remember that Oskar Schindler was a German industrialist who was credited with saving the lives of 1,200 Jews, who he employed in his factory during WWII. Schindler’s Factory is now a museum which not only features the story of Oskar Schindler but also covers the German occupation of Krakow.

And, when you’ve finished, you can catch a golf buggy style taxi from outside the museum back into the city for the equivalent of about £3.

Wherever you stay in this compact city, you are within walking distance of nearly all the attractions - and exploring on foot is all part of the Krakow experience. The Jewish quarter is like a town within the city. There are synagogues found on almost every street corner, each with its own individual style inside: it’s definitely worth popping your head around the door! This area also has many lovely cafes and restaurants, some of which feel like you’re in someone’s living room! But don’t be put off: some of the best food I sampled was in these smaller family run establishments.

14 kms outside the city you will find the incredible Wieliczka Salt Mines: a labyrinth of tunnels that extends to more than 300 kms over nine levels. The amazing salt sculptures create an eeriness as you take the famous Pilgrims’ Route through this amazing UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage listed site. The attraction can be reached by train, bus or an organised tour from Krakow.

For many visitors to Krakow, an essential pilgrimage is a visit to Auschwitz-Birkenau. This UNESCO World Heritage listed site has been renovated into a museum where you can learn about what happened during the years of the Holocaust.

BRHS - Burton Rossett Horticultural Society Gardening News

By EssentialsMAG gardening contributor CAROL EDWARDS It doesn’t seem a month since I last did an article, the weeks are flying by at a really fast rate. I can’t believe it is June already! The weather has really improved though and we have had several barbecues so far. I have some flowers on my tomato plant and I have seeds of herbs and flowers coming on in the greenhouse. I have to admit however that I didn’t take my own advice and potted up my cucumber plant much too early, and of course it died!

Not to be put off however, I have sowed another seed which is germinating on my livingroom windowsill in the warm, so wish me luck with this one. Because I don’t have heating in the greenhouse I am covering plants with fleece each night to protect them from the cold as well.

It’s important to keep on top of weeding at this time of the year as they soon get out of hand and take over the garden. Try to hoe the shallow rooted ones on a dry day as they will soon die when left on the soil in the sun.

I have started to mow my lawn more often now and the garden does look much tidier.

Any tall or floppy plants need supporting too, if you leave it until they get too large it is really difficult to do. Summer bedding can be planted out now, but keep an eye on the temperature and be prepared to cover them with fleece if we have a cold snap.

We will look forward to seeing you at our Spring Show and Plant Sale at St Peters school on June 9th between 2-4pm. It will be a good opportunity to buy some new plants and maybe treat yourself to a cream tea as well, the children will be singing again this year which was lovely last time, so do come and say hallo. As usual we will be decked out in our green fleeces and t-shirts, so do come and see us, and don’t forget to enjoy your gardens.

Maes y Pant Latest News

The subject of controlling dogs and their mess seems to bring out strong views on both sides of the argument. At present MyPAG does NOT require dogs to be on a lead in the woodland area of Maes y Pant, but we have decided that we will require this on the all-abilities (green) route. It doesn’t apply yet because we want time to prepare and inform people about what is happening. We will give due notice and do our very best to make it clear where dogs should be kept on a lead but it will be only a relatively small area.

There is a ‘dogs on lead’ policy in the car park for safety and control reasons, and for this reason we put up homemade notices to encourage people to be responsible. It so happens that as there is public access to our site, i.e. implied consent from us then a local order issued by Wrexham BC applies. This makes it an offence to have dogs off the lead in such places if an officer authorised by Wrexham BC requires the dog to be on a lead, “if such restraint is reasonably necessary to prevent a nuisance or behaviour by a dog likely to cause annoyance or disturbance to any other person or the worrying or disturbance of any other animal or bird.” Kingdom is the company that enforces this order on behalf of Wrexham BC. For car parks owned by Wrexham BC then a dog is required to be on a lead, and is an offence if not - so be warned! Just to be clear, Maes y Pant is not a Wrexham BC park, but dogs should be on a lead in the car park. Dog owners could be fined in the circumstances described above.

Last month a gentleman was given a £60 fine for allowing the dog off the lead in our car park. Needless to say he wasn’t happy, and without going into detail his appeal has been accepted and the fine rescinded, but an unpleasant experience. Despite the rumour mill, I can confirm that MyPAG did not invite Kingdom on-site and this incident came as much as a surprise to us, as the gentleman himself. I think it’s fair to say the directors of MyPAG are sorry this has happened.

There is a sting in the tail though. We are concerned about the dog mess still found on the all abilities (green) route, and if Kingdom, or whoever were to issue a fine for dog owners who allow their dogs to foul the area then we really wouldn’t have any sympathy with that and depending on the circumstances would probably support the action.

Local Birds & Wildlife

By Rev. Hugh Linn Despite the cold, wet and windy weather earlier this year many summer migrants returned on time to their breeding territories. Chiffchaffs were amongst the first to arrive followed later by Willow Warblers from further south.

By mid-April both species were singing in company with Blackcaps near Llay Pool. A few days earlier following a particularly violent storm a large party of windblown Swallows found refuge

by Gresford Flash. With them was a solitary House Martin, however since then several traditional breeding sites still remain unoccupied.

Later in the month the rattling song of Lesser Whitethroats could be heard at a number of locations around Rossett and on April 30th a Garden Warbler was singing near the weir.

As so many of our smaller songsters are what Large Red Damselfly birders commonly lump together as “little brown jobs” the best clue to their identity can be their song. It is good to report that after several years of decline Song Thrushes now appear to be increasing. Once ubiquitous Skylarks whose characteristic song flight has inspired poets and musicians are now seriously in decline but one or two can still be heard over Alyn Waters Country Park.

This month the Country Park is notable for its wild orchids. The recent announcement that the Council is proposing to use part of the park as a Gypsy Traveller Site may well have serious implications for the preservation of precious wildlife so all aspects of the possible site merit careful consideration before plans are finalised.

British Summertime was meant to begin on 25th March! When at last conditions resembling continental Summer arrived for the early May Bank Holiday gardens experienced an explosion of wildlife. In our own garden, as well as great views of spacedout birds sunbathing, we had an impressive variety of insects including Large Red Damselfly, Hairy Dragonfly, seven Butterfly species and a varied assortment of Bumblebees and Hoverflies. Hopefully these sightings may lead to better things to come.

Last June produced a couple of unusual local bird of prey records – Hobby and Red Kite.

We shall see what this year brings.

Summer Potato Salad INGREDIENTS 2 tbsp walnut pieces (optional) 1 tbsp tarragon or cider vinegar

900g/2lb new potatoes, such as Jersey Royals or Charlotte, washed or scrubbed

2 tsp Dijon mustard

1 tbsp chopped fresh tarragon leaves

2 tbsp olive oil

1 large shallot, finely chopped

2 tbsp walnut oil

2 tbsp chopped cornichons or gherkins

1 tsp runny honey Flaked sea salt and freshly ground Black pepper

SERVES 6

METHOD If you're using the walnuts, place in a hot oven (about 200C/180C Fan/Gas 6) for a few minutes until beginning to colour slightly. This gives a fresher, less bitter flavour to the nuts.

Place the vinegar, mustard, oils, honey and salt and pepper in a screw-top jar or in the bowl of a small hand blender. Shake or blend well until creamy.

Add more seasoning if preferred.

Cook the potatoes in boiling salted water for about 15–20 minutes, until just tender. Drain well and, when just cool enough to handle, cut into halves or quarters, if quite large.

Place the potatoes in a mixing bowl with the tarragon, shallots, cornichons or gherkins and walnuts, if using, and toss in as much or as little of the dressing as you want. Serve just warm or, if you're not eating straight away, refrigerate and return the salad to room temperature before eating.

Local Police Advice Keeping North Wales Safe When Your Child Needs a Car Seat When travelling in a vehicle, children need to use the right car seat.

Children aged 12 or older or 135cm tall.

Once your child is 12 years old or 135 centimetres tall, they can use an adult seat belt. They don’t need a child’s car seat.

Children younger than 12 or under 135cm tall. Adult seat belts aren’t designed for children because children are proportioned differently and their bones are still developing. So until your child is old or tall enough to use an adult seat belt alone, they must use a child’s car seat. Children’s car seats are designed for different weights check the label on the seat, which shows the weight range the seat is suitable for.

Rear-facing baby seats. Your child needs a rear-facing baby seat until they weigh up to 13 kilogrammes. Baby seats have their own (integral) straps. The adult seat belt or ISOFix system is used to hold the baby seat in place. You must not use a rear-facing car seat in a seat with a front airbag, unless the airbag has been deactivated. In a crash, a rear-facing seat would be hit by a frontal airbag and could be knocked up towards the rear of the vehicle. Check your car’s handbook for advice about deactivating any airbags. When the airbag is deactivated, move the car’s seat as far back from the dashboard as possible.

Forward or rearward-facing baby seats.

When your child weighs between 9 and 18 kilogrammes and has outgrown their rearfacing baby seat, they can use a forward or rearward-facing baby seat. These seats also have their own straps or impact shield and are held in place by the adult seat belt or ISOFix system. In a seat with a front airbag, make sure a forward facing child seat is as far back from the airbag as possible.

Forward-facing child car seats. Children weighing from 15 to 25 kilogrammes can use a child car seat (booster seat). These are forward-facing and may have backs or side wings. Child car seats don’t have their own straps – your child is held in using the adult seatbelt and the seat is held in place by the adult seatbelt and/or the ISOFix system. Make sure you position a forwardfacing booster seat as far back as possible from a frontal airbag.

Booster cushions. When your child reaches 22 kilogrammes, they can use a booster cushion. These may not have backs but raise your child in the car’s seat so they can use the adult seat belt.

If your child weighs more than 36 kilogrammes but isn’t 135 centimetres tall, they must continue using a booster seat.

This is safer than using only an adult belt.

The Good Life Experience A Weekend of Discovery & Adventure The Good Life Experience returns for its fifth year this September for the biggest party yet! By Jenny Dutton Gresford Trust AGM will be held at 7.30 pm. Thursday June 28th. Everyone is welcome to receive the annual report on the work done at the Trust. Nominations for Village Representatives are accepted in advance of the meeting.

Ian Gibson is standing down after two years as Chairman of the Trust. Many years ago, Ian helped set up the Trust in its present form and his resignation now is a huge loss to all Trust organisations. The Trustees thank Ian for giving so generously of his time and expertise for the benefit of the Trust, and for his exemplary leadership in steering the Trust through the challenges and triumphs of the last few years. Ian’s knowledge and expert advice, especially in the care and maintenance of our grounds and pitches; pushing through maintenance work, overseeing the tender for a grass cutting contract, organising the shared purchase of machinery, has been invaluable in improving the condition of the recreation grounds and all the facilities available at the Trust.

Ian’s day-to-day input to the running of the Trust was generous and will be much missed, but we are reassured that Ian has not severed his links entirely and that Trustees may call on his skills in the future.

Congratulations to the Gresford British Legion Dominos Team of Graham Halliwell, Chris Guise, Tony Roberts, ‘Mouse’ Walker, Rik Jones, Barry Jones, Nobby Jones and Bob Edwards. They won the Terry Hartley Cup in a knock-out competition at St Mary’s Catholic Social Club on the 17th May. The team are currently 5th in the League.

Congratulations also to GAFC for gaining Tier 2 Accreditation for 2018 - 19 season, enabling them to remain in the Huws Gray Cymru Alliance. The UEFA inspector was

very impressed with Trust facilities and grounds.

Gresford CC`s All Stars 2018 programme started on May 20th with over 50 children aged 5 to 8 signed up. This is the second year that the ECB (England and Wales Cricket Board) sponsored event has taken place. Clubs from all over the UK are involved in the 8-week programme with Gresford hosting one of the largest groups in Wales.

A Cricket Wales “Girls’ Festival” was held at Gresford cricket ground on May 17th for Primary School pupils. Over 80 young cricketers from the Wrexham area took part, including two teams from All Saints’, Gresford. The fine weather ensured a good time was had by all...and the cricket wasn’t bad either!

Ladies’ cricket continues to prosper with a `soft ball` competition taking place at Gresford on Sunday 10th June (1pm onwards). Various teams from across N. Wales will be taking part.

GCC second team currently hold ‘Pride of Place’; undefeated and top of their league after 6 games.

So how can we manage stress at such an important time? Here are some top tips that may help: Eat well. Maintaining steady blood sugar levels will help to avoid energy dips and promote good sleep. Avoid sugary foods such as sweets, chocolate, cereals, choosing nutrient rich foods such as dark green, leafy veg, lean protein and pulses.

Stay Hydrated. Stay topped up with plenty of water, diluted pure fruit juice (to minimise sugars) and herbal teas. caffeinated drinks such as coffee, tea and carbonated drinks can create jittery activity and can adversely affect sleep patterns.

Get Good Sleep. Our bodies can cope with a night or two of poor sleep, but adding the worry of poor sleep to an already nervous mind, will never help. Take a relaxing bath, turn off all electrical appliances by 10pm, ensure the bedroom is cave dark, read a book, practice some yoga deep breathing and meditation. Relax your mind for restful sleep, and wake-up on the morning feeling refreshed and ready.

Take A Break. Apparently, we can only concentrate for about 45 minutes before we start to become less effective in our task.

So, take regular breaks, whether that's simply getting up from the desk, or removing yourself from the task for a short period of time.

Or perhaps, take some exercise - go for a walk, run, swim or bike ride. Exercise releases natural feel-good chemicals that will help you feel less stressed Reward yourself. Set yourself achievable goals and treat yourself when you reach them. And then plan something fabulous when it's over.

Street Party Celebrations The residents of the top end of Stancliffe Avenue Marford came out in force to celebrate the wedding of Harry and Meghan Markle on Saturday 19th May. On a beautiful sunny day, the residents of 28 houses all contributed with food and donations to hold a street party and enjoy some community spirit. The event was organised by Netty and Dave Mason and were helped along the way by Hilary Salisbury.

“We had help with a lovely gesture from Marford Co-op (special thanks to manager Craig, George and Lisa) who gave a donation and a discount on our food. The sausages were donated by Bicks Chicks on the Wrexham Industrial Estate and went down a treat.

Marford Community Centre lent us some tables, and the children enjoyed having their faces painted by Party Bliss. It was lovely to see us being supported by Russell Gilmartin our local Councillor, PCSO's Sue and Abby, Vicky from the Essentials Mag and Jeff The Leader photographer. Andrew Atkinson also called to see us. Thank you to everyone who came and made the occasion a great success.

Financial News with Hadlow Edwards I recently read an article in the financial press that stated that 'consumer engagement in pensions is low in the UK'. This is probably true - but the real question is ; why is this the case?

To an extent, the introduction of the work place pension has been a double edged sword. Yes, most working people, if they haven’t yet been enrolled to a workplace scheme, will be this year, but that in itself is part of the problem. The minimum contributions levels required to meet legislative requirements are not nearly enough to retire on, and yet it’s rare that I meet anyone, particularly if they are below the age of 40 who are contributing any more than the minimum to a workplace scheme.

If we accept that minimum contributions are not going to be enough let's look at some practical steps you can take to point you in the right direction. Hopefully this will be helpful whether you are in your 20's (a round of applause for anyone under 30 who's still reading and got this far) or your 60's, or maybe even already retired.

Number 1. HAVE A PLAN and pay what you can. Start as soon as you can, set a budget, know your numbers - and get going. The contributions you make when you are younger will be the absolute bedrock of your fund value in years to come.

Number 2. INVEST AN HOUR to understand what the options are. How much do you know about your employers scheme? If you paid in something extra every month - how much does your employer have to pay as well? How much income tax could you get back off

Number 3. ROOT OUT the old paperwork. If you have old 'frozen' schemes - what exactly are they doing for you? Who is monitoring your funds/options once you have moved on to new employers? Are they working hard enough? You really should know - it's your money, your future.

Number 4. PAY FOR SOMEONE ELSE to start building a fund early. If you have the financial stability to start a fund or add to a fund for your son, daughter or grandchildren excellent tax breaks are still available. You could consider doing this as a monthly payment or as a lump sum.

Number 5. DEATH BENEFITS (the morbid bit) have you sorted out what you would like to happen to your pot, in the unhappy event of passing away? Pensions do not form part of your estate (so they don't come within your Will if you like) and knowing how to protect your funds for your children or grandchildren makes a lot of sense.

I am not sure we can make planning for retirement 'trendy' (you have to be Australian for that - where it's becoming the compulsory BBQ topic) - but I do believe we can help you get to grips your yours.

Strawberry Dodgers

by Bellis Brothers, Holt These people of a bygone age, were engaged to pick the luscious fruit which has been synonymous with the Holt area of Wrexham for more than a century. Never was a more inappropriate description given to those who slaved through the midsummer sun and rain, with the back breaking task of picking and packing strawberries for dispatching to the markets of the North West.

The term ‘dodger’ is believed to have arisen from the fact that these people used to dodge around the country seeking work in the fields at planting times and harvesting.

At Bellis Brothers in Holt, the dodgers were accommodated in model hutments (Barracks) designed by an erstwhile architect and no picker would be allowed to start work before being medically examined, ”only clean and healthy persons being engaged for fruit gathering and packing”. The county medical officer of health also regularly visited the campus and a dentist was on call.

The dodgers were disliked by the local community, for although the majority were sober, hardworking men and women seeking a break in the country from their drab town surroundings, rowdy elements from Wrexham delighted in baiting them. Pitched battles along the road to Holt were common in season, especially on Sundays when Wrexham ties, intent on overcoming the then Welsh drinking laws invaded the village as bona-fide travellers to fill themselves with ale.

More than a hundred years have passed since Charles Bellis first planted strawberryrunners in his garden and thus initiated a thriving industry which now encompasses other agricultural produce. The days of the strawberry dodger have long since passed. More often than not buyers will be invited to pick their own. But the demand for the Bellis Berry is as keen as ever.

Ian Lucas MP for Wrexham Wrexham is a popular place to live. Since I moved to live in Marford, way back in the 1980s, I have experienced the high quality of life in North Wales where we enjoy a precious combination of beautiful places and world-beating employment opportunities.

It comes as no surprise to me, therefore, that more and more people are looking to move to places in Wrexham like Garden Village and Borras and villages like Gresford, Rossett, Marford and Llay.

The north of the town is closer to the employers based in Cheshire and the Wirral and Merseyside.

But as Wrexham expands, along with its surrounding villages, it is vital that our taxes make sure essential public services are provided.

That is why the Local Development Plan, which will outline how Wrexham and the wider county borough will be developed until 2028, is such an important document.

Where planned provision fails, the consequences are severe.

In an expanding and popular area of Wrexham like Gresford, we cannot countenance a situation where a very important public facility will be closed.

But that is what is facing us as Gresford Health Centre has announced it is closing to doctor appointments, with a proposal to transfer them to Rossett Surgery and Llay Health Centre.

The Gresford surgery is special to me personally. As my wife reminded me recently, the first time she heard my daughter laugh was in Gresford surgery.

It was when the nurse weighed my daughter in the weighing machine, and it provoked a heart-warming reaction from the little girl. So I am very familiar with the surgery's importance.

The way that the National Health Service operates is that GPs are private contractors and they have a contract with the health board to provide services. If the GPs that are operating in Gresford now do not want to provide services, then the health board should be looking for other GPs to provide a service there.

Access to the surgery in Llay is impossible for elderly people in Gresford because there are no public transport connections, and the Rossett facility is inadequate in terms of its size.

We have to make sure something as essential as a GP practice is retained in such an important part of Wrexham. It’s what we pay our taxes for and why we value our NHS so highly.

The prospect of Gresford not having a GPs’ surgery is unacceptable.

Latest News From Rossett Community Council New five-a-side goals have recently been installed in the playground in Rossett and will hopefully be more suitable for playing a match. The equipment cost £6,716 so the Community Council applied to WCBC for £500 from the Play Sufficiency Innovation Grant which was successful, and The Balfour Trust also made a very generous donation of £3,000. The outstanding amount was funded by Rossett Community Council.

The next phase is to get an estimate of costings so we can ascertain if funding can be secured for the project.

Outreach Post Office Since the initial postponement of the start date for this service, we have now received confirmation that the equipment is on its way. The Post Office will be trialled on Friday 25th May to ensure it's all working effectively. The official 'go live' date is Friday 1st June to give the Post Office time should any issues be identified the week before. It will then run every Friday (excluding bank holidays) between 10.30 - 12.30 and will be based in the meeting room at the side of the Presbyterian Church on Station Road, a few doors away from the old Post Office.

Refreshments will be available along with some activities for those that want to just come along for a coffee and chat. Please try to support this local service.

Gresford Health Centre What a brilliant turnout it was at the public meeting! Thank you so much to those of you who joined us; it was really encouraging to see so many of you there.

Roads I’m still chasing up the council to repair potholes around the village. I know they’ve been very busy throughout the Borough, so I am staying in continuous contact with them to ensure these problems remain on their radar and ultimately, are rectified.

Following on from Cllr. Atkinson’s article this month (overleaf), I’d like to pick back up on a question that many residents have asked, regarding the new Gresford Road housing development in Llay and the impact it may have on the area’s health service. It’s apparent that, when planning was being passed for this, Betsi Cadwaladr Health Board did not put in an application for developer contributions.

This oversight has potentially cost our community a substantial sum of money that, at the developer’s expense, could have paid for better health services locally.

In order to try and avoid any opportunities like this being missed again in the future, I encourage you to take this up with the health board yourself and, as a member of the Government, ask your Assembly Member to challenge it too. Alyn Family Doctors had the foresight to apply but unfortunately, it needed to come from the health board.

Street Party I’d just like to say a huge well done to the residents of Stancliffe Avenue, who organised the brilliant street party for the Royal Wedding. It was a real success and great to see the community come together in such a memorable and enjoyable way.

Andrew Atkinson Councillor for Gresford Alyn Family Doctors I want to thank everyone that attended the public meeting, it was an incredible turnout of over 300 residents which serves to illustrate the immense strength of feeling that we have on this issue locally.

I absolutely DO NOT support the proposal and am working hard to challenge this and find alternatives.

Councillor Gilmartin and I have sent a list of all the points raised, questions and concerns to the practice and will circulate the answers when we receive them.

At the meeting, Rob Smith the Area Director for the Health Board was taken back I believe by the strength of feeling of residents, but we must all still write to the Health Board to let them know about the problems and challenges these proposals would cause. Even though the consultation will have now finished please keep making the point.

As I said at the meeting please contact our AM’s (Assembly Member’s) and our MP Ian Lucas. Health is a matter devolved to the Welsh Government so the AM’s are the ones with the real influence on this but I hope that with continued pressure our MP will lobby his colleagues and make a strong case to assist us. Our Assembly Member Lesley Griffiths is a member of the Welsh Government so please also ask her for a strong commitment to action.

We will hear politicians tell us how much they value these services and what they mean to them personally, but we need to know what action they are taking, who they are meeting with and how they are actually going to help this campaign. Please keep up the pressure on them.

The doctors are in a difficult situation as they do face real pressures so in order to get the best outcome we need Betsi health board to recognise the problems they face and provide assistance.

I believe that the ultimate plan as has been all but confirmed in a letter from Betsi is that the practice would like one large site in Llay to accommodate all of its communities. Betsi have confirmed that they would look favourably upon this. This needs to be challenged as transport and other issues would remain a very real problem.

We've been told that to make space for GP’s in Llay and Rossett that non-GP services would come to Gresford. I'm not sure that Llay and Rossett residents have all realised the implications for them when it comes to travelling to Gresford. I hope that they will also join us in challenging this.

We don't need warm words from anyone we need action and a commitment to work together with our community to fight this.

Jonathan Ratcliffe Memorial Fun Day 23rd June, Gresford Trust, 1pm - 8pm It is 10 years since Jonnie passed away at the age of 28.

Ever since, friends and family have honoured his memory in many ways. The fundraising events have raised over £91,000 for Cancer Charities, mainly ‘Beating Bowel Cancer’.

This year’s event is a Family Fun Day organised by a group of Jonnie’s friends. The aim is for local families to come together and enjoy a summer event and to celebrate what Jonnie meant to all of us.

His family are so proud of the person he was and miss him so much. Jonnie’s friends have him in the forefront of their minds and miss the fun loving man that he was. They shared his love for sport and life in general.

Whilst there is enormous sadness, the memories we all have of Jonnie still make us smile and laugh. He was cruelly taken from us when he had so much more to live for. The ‘Fun Day’ is an opportunity for us all to come together and share the memories that we treasure.

We all hope that the fundraising will have made a difference and helped to prevent others having to suffer the loss of loved one.

Let’s hope it’s a fine day on 23rd June and lots of people attend the event.

Cliff who died in January aged 96 was a well known musician who played accordion and keyboards in the area for over 70 years playing into his 90's. By Dr. Keli Thorsteinsson A commonly encountered concern in our clinic is wrinkled or baggy skin around the eyes. This can be a pure cosmetic concern, but severe “hooding” of the upper eyelids can interfere with vision. In this case, treatment may be provided on the NHS and your GP can advise you whether this is available in your area. Treatment options have traditionally been limited to laser or surgical blepharoplasty, with considerable risks and high cost for private treatment, if vision is not affected.

An exciting development in this field is the use of plasma technology to carry out nonsurgical blepharoplasty with fewer risks, shorter down-times, and lower cost. The treatment involves so-called sublimation, where unwanted tissue is converted into ionised gas (plasma). The key difference from laser is that less heat is generated during the treatment. Therefore the risk of side effects, such as scarring, overtightening of the lids and pigmentation is vastly reduced. It is an Italian team of scientists who are at the forefront of developing plasma technology for nonsurgical blepharoplasty. Their latest and most advanced plasma device is Plexr Plus®.

The treated area is left with carbon crusts which should be allowed to resolve naturally without picking or scratching. It is recommended that patients wear wraparound sunglasses and take great care with sun exposure for six weeks after treatment.

Thousands of successful non-surgical blepharoplasties have been carried out with Plexr Plus® in the UK since 2014.

Beware of fake and untested 'plasma' devices, of which there are plenty in circulation. It is very easy to buy these cheaply off the internet, for example from the Chinese import site Alibaba. It is therefore very important that people looking for a non-surgical treatment for loose or baggy eyelid skin do their research carefully and avoid rushing into treatment decisions.

RSPCA - Dogs Die in Hot Cars!

Never leave your dog alone in a car on a warm day. Many people still believe that it’s ok to leave a dog in a car on a warm day if the windows are left open or they’re parked in the shade, but the truth is, it’s still a very dangerous situation for the dog.

A car can become as hot as an oven very quickly. When it’s 22 degrees, in a car it can reach 47 degrees within the hour.

What to do if you see a dog in a car on a warm day. In an emergency, we may not be able to attend quickly enough, and with no powers of entry, we’d need police assistance at such an incident. Don’t be afraid to dial 999, the police will inform us if animal welfare assistance is required.

Help a dog in a hot car • Establish the animal's health and condition. If they're displaying any signs of heatstroke dial 999 immediately.

• If the situation becomes critical for the dog and the police are too far away or unable to attend, many people’s instinct will be to break into the car to free the dog. If you decide to do this, please be aware that without proper justification,

this could be classed as criminal damage and, potentially, you may need to defend your actions in court.

• Make sure you tell the police what you intend to do and why. Take pictures or videos of the dog and the names and numbers of witnesses to the incident.

Emergency First Aid for dogs For the best chance of survival, dogs suffering from heatstroke urgently need to have their body temperature lowered gradually.

• Move him/her to a shaded/cool area.

• Immediately douse the dog with cool (not cold) water, to avoid shock. If possible, you can also use wet towels or place him/her in the breeze of a fan.

• Allow the dog to drink small amounts of cool water.

• Continue to douse the dog with cool water until his/her breathing starts to settle but never so much that he/she begins to shiver.

Once the dog is cool, take him/her to the nearest vet as a matter of urgency.
