As we enter 2021 in another lockdown in Wales I’m even more conscious of our responsibility here at EssentialsMAG to keep our communities connected. Local News Help Homeless People This Winter Levels of rough sleeping are on the increase across the UK. StreetLink exists to help end rough sleeping by enabling members of the public to connect people sleeping rough with the local services that can support them. If you are concerned about someone over the age of 18 that you have seen sleeping rough in England or Wales, you can send an alert to StreetLink online: www.streetlink.org.uk. The details you provide are sent to the local authority or outreach service for the area in which you have seen the person, to help them find the individual and connect them to support. It is important to note that if you think the person you are concerned about is under 18 please do not contact StreetLink but instead call the police.
Sharing Christmas Joy Over recent weeks, this community has again come together, with the help of the inspirational Refugee Kindness, to share Christmas with new members of our communities. Refugee Kindness was created locally in August 2020, as a result of a chance meeting with a family from Syria who had been brought here for refuge by the British Red Cross. As a recognised Town of Sanctuary, Wrexham is proud to offer homes to people who have been forced to flee theirs. Sadly, most leave all their worldly belongings behind and arrive with nothing. Whilst they are provided with the basics, Refugee Kindness has facilitated the donation of 1000s of household items to help makes lives more comfortable. With 1600 members and 18 volunteers, the team now supports almost 40 new families. Thanks to the kindness extended, 70 more children were visited by Father Christmas in December. Wrexham School Transport - January 2021 Schools in Wrexham will re-open on different days after the Christmas break and if your child uses school transport you should have been informed of this by the school or via their social media communications. The information is based on what ‘should happen’, however it may be subject to change due to COVID-19 and any additional guidelines or changes to lockdown rules that the Welsh Assembly Government may announce. Rossett and Burton Village Hall It was on March 20th 2009 that the Trustees of Rossett and Burton Village Hall Management Committee signed the lease to take over responsibility for the Village Hall. At that time we were aware that much needed to be done to improve the state and condition of the building and to make it fit for purpose as a community building. Since that time, significant progress has been made, with repairs to the fabric, new heating systems and extensive re-decoration and the building has been transformed. The very small, and if I might say, mainly aging team (myself included) have worked hard to make the Hall fit for purpose. No effort has been spared in the search for grants and funding from a wide range of organisations and many have been successful. We are particularly grateful to the local Co-op for their generous cheque in excess of £2000. Notwithstanding this, COVID-19 has contributed to a significant drop in our income and like many businesses and residents we are struggling to keep afloat. It has become very clear to the Committee that, if the Hall is to continue to be an asset at the heart of the village, we need new blood on the Committee and to continue our bid for funding. Therefore, I am appealing for volunteers to come on board and help with the work for our community. There are two ways that you can help, one is to be a ‘Friend’ and offer support by way of volunteering to help with work or events or even perhaps book keeping etc., and secondly we urgently need to strengthen the Committee. We are planning to hold our AGM in January, either by zoom or in person dependent upon the rules in place at the time. In the Footsteps of Trebellius Maximus A local metal detectorist has received an award for discovering one of the most significant Roman objects found in Wales in recent years. Rob Jones from Coedpoeth received the ‘Most Significant Find Wales’ award from Searcher magazine for his discovery of a Roman lead ingot near Rossett. An ingot (or ‘pig’) is formed when a molten metal, in this case lead, is cast into a shape ready for further processing. The Rossett lead ingot is only half a metre long but weighs a hefty 63 kilograms. Less than a hundred lead ingots of this type are known from the mines of Roman Britain. This rare find is particularly significant for archaeologists and historians because of its potentially early date, the location of the find spot, and because of its unique inscription. Upon discovering the pig, Rob immediately alerted the local Finds Officer (NE Wales) for the Portable Antiquities Scheme in Wales (PAS Cymru) based at Wrexham Museum. This allowed archaeologists to properly record the find spot so that the maximum information could be obtained concerning the object. Rob Jones said: “I’m so happy that it was acquired by Wrexham Museum so that it can be viewed by everyone. By finding this ingot I have been working closely with archaeologists from Wrexham and Chester and look to write a new chapter about the Romans in North Wales and to uncover more Roman history of Wrexham.”
Rossett Community Council A quick update on the exciting plans to develop a community hub facility on the site of the disused toilet block in Rossett park. We have reached a critical stage in the project – the submission of the plans for the hub to Wrexham Council for planning permission. This can take up to 16 weeks. Once this has been granted, we are able to bid for funding. In the meantime we will shortly be sharing more details about the hub here in Essentials, on the Hwb Yr Orsedd Facebook page and on the Rossett Community Council website and noticeboards. I have to be honest, when I first started hooping (after I had my second baby), I never thought hooping would have such a great positive effect on my body and on my mind! We all know hoola hooping can be good fun, but it is also a lot more than that. When you think of a hoola hoop you probably think about spinning it on the waist, although there are actually over 370 different moves you can try! With such a variety of movements, hooping is never boring but, more importantly, it is seriously good exercise. Two-Factor Authentication By EssentialsMAG tech contributor DAVID HUGHES This is probably the most “techy” headline I have chosen since starting this column back in early 2018. But Two-Factor Authentication - also known as 2FA or Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) - is an important concept to understand that can really help to keep you and your information safe online. What is it? 2FA is an added layer of security to online accounts. It is secondary passcode specific not just to you and your account, but the actual log-in you are performing. It works using your smart phone. When you enable 2FA, you link your online account to an application on your phone. The most commonly-used app is called Google Authenticator (but there are others). When you connect your account, a new six-digit code is randomly generated every 30 seconds or so. This can also be called a One-Time Password (OTP). When you log in to your account, you enter your username/email then password as normal, then the site will prompt you to enter the six-digit code from the authentication app. Why should I use it? Hopefully, this is clear: Once 2FA is enabled on your account, a person would not only need to know your username/email and password, they would also need access to your smart phone (which itself should be passcode protected) before they can gain access to your account. So even if you are hacked or your password is guessed, your information remains safe.
How do I get it? First of all, you will need to download an authentication app on your phone. Google Authenticator is the most common, but there are plenty on the app stores of both iPhone and Android phones; just search for “authenticator app” on the store. Then you will need to set up 2FA on your online accounts. Not all websites offer 2FA, but the majority of larger, popular sites do. Log in to an account and go to the settings. There’s usually a section called Security or Password. If 2FA is available, this is where you will find it. The site should guide you through the process of setting up 2FA and have your smart phone handy. What about SMS? Some sites allow the second factor to be an SMS message. So when you log in with username/email and password, the site will text you a unique code. This is fine, but not as secure as using an authentication app, because most text notifications can be read without the need to open the smart phone fully. Whilst the set up of 2FA is a little time consuming, and logging in takes a bit longer, it is well worth adding it to your most sensitive accounts: especially social media and online stores. Think of it like setting your house alarm before locking the door: yes, it takes a little more time to leave the house, but it’s less likely you’ll have anything stolen!

And, when it does, what will be on your priority list? A street party, perhaps? Or a big family get-together? And, definitely, a holiday! Let me be the first to wish you a Happy New Year, I do hope that by the time you read this article we have started to enjoy a much better year and we are looking forward to getting out and about again. I know that my garden has been a great comfort to me during the lockdown and I am sure you feel the same. In fact, at the end of November, my son and I had a winter barbeque complete with a fire! We did replace the cider with mugs of tea, but it was great fun. So here’s to all the barbeques to come. Now’s the time to recycle the Christmas Tree. I am not sure if Wrexham Council still takes trees to chip, but I expect the Recycling has a skip to take them. Or, if you are lucky enough to have a wood-chipper of your own, you can do this at home. Please remember to wear safety goggles though. Greenhouses can be tidied and pots cleaned ready for the Spring too. I have managed to successfully grow some Ammi Visnaga seeds this winter, this is a white lacy flower which is a lot like Cow Parsley, so I am looking forward to planting them out in the Spring, probably in my Wildflower garden. As long as the ground isn’t frosted, it is a good time to plant bare-rooted roses and to prune any established ones. Also, you can order your seeds to use in the Spring. If you have Rhubarb plants, now is the time to force them by placing a pot over them. This will produce lovely long pink stems and will make my favourite Rhubarb crumble, yum! Remember to keep feeding the birds, and clean the feeders and bird baths too. Also keep enjoying your gardens won’t you?

Local Birds & Wildlife By Rev. Hugh Linn Some of our readers have commented that during last summer they noticed a definite dearth of birds visiting their gardens. These comments tie in with the findings of the British Trust for Ornithology, whose research discovered that last summer, there was a 20% drop in the number of gardens visited by Blue Tits and that there was also a notable shortage of Blackbirds. These findings certainly tally with my own garden observations.
BLACKBIRD
Between July and November, I failed to see a single Blackbird - even though one pair had raised young earlier in the year. Blue Tits require large numbers of caterpillars to raise healthy BLACKCAP young but, by the time their chicks hatched, the optimum caterpillar season was over as a result of prolonged dry weather in the Spring. Blackbirds need large quantities of worms as the staple diet for their fledglings, but in dry weather they have difficulty in digging into hardened soil. Combined with these problems and the time autumn had arrived, the countryside was full of a variety of juicy berries. This meant that by then, a lot of birds were less reliant on food provided in gardens. Towards the end of the year, however, the birds were drifting back. Blackbirds and Blue Tits reappeared and, as a bonus, our garden was visited by an unusually large number of Coal Tits. A rush of Blackbirds coincided with the arrival of Redwings and Fieldfares so some of those may well have been Scandinavian migrants boosting the numbers of residents. An unobtrusive little bird that is now a regular visitor is the Blackcap. About the size of Robins they are pale greyish brown. Males can be distinguished from females and firstwinter birds which have brown caps by the black caps which give them their name. Once regarded as summer-only visitors research using tiny geolocators show them to be great travellers. UK breeders tend to winter in South Europe and North Africa whereas our wintering Blackcaps mostly originate from across central Europe or even northern Spain or southern France. Our latest local avian attraction is a potential Starling roost somewhere near the Trevalyan area. A spectacular ‘murmuration’ of more than 1,000 birds was spotted one evening in late November over the B5102 Rossett/Holt road. Happy New Year!

Sarah Atherton MP Member of Parliament for Wrexham 2020 was a difficult year for many and I’m sure that residents will join me in wishing for a brighter and more prosperous 2021. New Year’s celebrations across the whole of the country were scaled back and we were presented an opportunity to reflect on the past year and pay tribute to our friends, families and neighbours who sadly lost their lives to this pandemic. Last month the United Kingdom became the first country in the world to administer a clinically approved vaccine against coronavirus, marking the biggest vaccination programme in NHS history. This is an important step in our country’s fight against the virus, and provides fresh hope that we can beat this pandemic, reclaim our lives and get our economy moving again. I’m immensely proud of our national effort. We owe all those who have worked tirelessly to develop and administer the vaccine an enormous debt of gratitude. However, it is vital that as the vaccine is rolled out, starting with the most vulnerable groups, that we do not relax our guard and abide by local restrictions, ensuring our communities are protected and that the sacrifices we’ve all made over the last year have not been in vain. Whilst we have made great strides in defeating the virus, our economic recovery won’t be without its challenges. I continue to work alongside the UK Government to ensure that Wales gets its fair share of resources as we build back better from Coronavirus. Our small businesses are amongst those hardest hit by this pandemic. Last month Small Business Saturday was celebrated across Wrexham. To mark this occasion, I visited a variety of local businesses to hear from them the importance of supporting our small local businesses following what has been an incredibly difficult year. As we look ahead to 2021 we must hope and strive to make this year a better one. We should take forth the positives of 2020 such as the revival of our community spirit and take solace in the knowledge that a sense of normality is returning soon. This is my first ‘MyPag update’ for EssentialsMAG, and I’d like to start by acknowledging the debt we owe to the two directors who stood down at our AGM in October. Trevor Britton has put a huge amount of work into MyPag over many years, most recently as Chair, and on behalf of the Directors and the community I’d like to pay tribute to everything that he’s achieved. We are very grateful, and pleased that he is staying on the Board, so that we can continue to benefit from his expertise. I’d also like to thank Sue Kelly, who retired as secretary. Sue’s amazing skills with fundraising and grant applications mean it is no exaggeration to say that without her input the site would never have been secured for the community in the first place. Sue has been a mainstay of the organisation ever since, and she will be much missed. Thank you, both! The new cycling routes seem to be working well. By the time you read this, the permanent signs will be in place, and we are grateful for the support of both cyclists and pedestrians in keeping to the paths and sharing the site safely. The next five year plan has now been approved by the Directors, and I’m very pleased that it follows the ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t mend it’ philosophy. This has been a difficult and turbulent year, and we are conscious that Maes y Pant has been a much-needed and muchappreciated haven of peace and tranquility for many people and a vital refuge for wildlife. Looking ahead, we intend to continue trying to balance the needs of the many different users, along with our fundamental remits of conservation and community resource. We are aware that the increase in visitors using the site has impacted on our neighbours, especially with car parking, and we ask everyone to be mindful of other people’s needs. As the new signs say, ‘Share with Care!’ We are hopeful that the regular volunteer groups which used to meet monthly will be able to restart in the new year, and look forward to more people being able to be involved. Aubergine Parmigiana Aubergine Parmigiana is one of the most iconic Italian dishes - it’s a great appetiser or side dish. It also works really well for lunch, especially if served with a green salad. Buon appetito!
SERVES 4 INGREDIENTS 3 medium aubergines
60g of Parmesan, finely grated
1 garlic clove, sliced
Vegetable oil, to fry the aubergine
600ml of passata
2 tbsp of extra virgin olive oil
10 basil leaves
Salt, to taste
180g of mozzarella cheese, sliced
METHOD Slice the aubergine lengthways into 1.5cm thick slices and soak them in salty water for 30 minutes. Pat dry then fry the aubergine slices in vegetable oil until golden. Place them in a colander to drain any excess oil. In the meantime, prepare the tomato sauce. Sauté the garlic with the extra virgin olive oil for 1 minute, taking care not to burn it or the sauce will taste bitter. Add the passata and basil leaves and season with salt to taste. Cover and cook for 10-15 minutes on low, then set aside. Preheat the oven to 180°C/gas mark 4. To assemble the parmigiana, put a scoop of tomato sauce at the bottom of an ovenproof dish. Top with a layer of fried aubergine, tomato sauce, grated Parmesan, and sliced mozzarella. Then repeat the layers until you run out of aubergine. Finish the top layer with the tomato sauce and grated Parmesan. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown. Serve warm.

Hello and Happy New Year to you dear reader! I do hope you are well. December has been and gone. It was a time to reflect on the year, but also a time when we tend to overindulge. I’m sure you have heard it said many times: “January, I promise to exercise more and have a healthy lifestyle”. Well, I’m here to reassure you it doesn’t have to be as painful as you think. You might actually be growing the ideal items to help you. Through the winter months, there are many fruit and vegetables available to help you detoxify your body. Consider it as a ‘jumpstart’ to the New Year by flushing out all those toxins from your body. An easy way is to make a juice - my personal favourite. However, If you don’t have a juice machine, don’t worry, eating fresh fruits and veggies as crudités and snacks, is another great way #eatraw Alternatively, making fresh soups is also a great start. Alyn Family Doctors Latest News The news at the end of 2020 of several effective COVID vaccines surely had to be the best present yet. Indeed, Wockhardt’s Pharmaceuticals will be proudly manufacturing many of the vaccines locally on behalf of Astrazeneca. The programme has already begun with care home residents, health and social care Professionals and >80yrs being targeted initially before beginning an age-based approach working downwards. Those with health conditions who were previously “shielding” won’t be targeted as the Government felt that this simpler approach would promote increased coverage. Vaccinations will likely involve a two-dose regimen with doses 3-4 weeks apart. Undoubtedly there are contentious debates around vaccination and this has been such a concern to Government that they met with social media giants to advise them of their moral obligation to ensure “fake news” is unable to pollute our newsfeeds. Whilst we respect everyone’s autonomy, we wanted to make sure our patients are making an informed decision. “Do I need to worry that the vaccination development has been rushed?” Many perceive the trials to have been hurried. It is important to emphasise the lengths of the trials themselves have not been shortened. Government financing has ensured obstructions weren’t faced with finance delays and manufacturing has been more rapid secondary to new technology.
The sluggish, administrative red-tape processes usually encountered have been addressed and this is how time savings have occurred. “I thought this was a new type of vaccine, how do we know it’s safe?” Unlike many conventional vaccines, COVID vaccines do not contain any parts of the virus itself. By EssentialsMAG environment contributor ROB RENOUF 2020 provided graphic evidence of the worsening climate and ecological emergency, yet there were also positive developments which offer hope for 2021. The year started with the unprecedented bushfires in Australia. Alongside the human and economic costs, it’s estimated that almost three billion animals were killed or displaced. Apocalyptic images of orange, smoke-filled skies illustrated vividly how the climate crisis is happening right now, and these scenes were replicated in the US months later. The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the dangers of intruding into increasingly remote areas of the planet, which are exacerbated by some of our food production methods. The speed and scale of the pandemic response stands in stark contrast to the inadequate action to tackle the climate and ecological emergency. On the positive side, following the Presidential Election, the US looks set to rejoin the Paris Climate Agreement and pursue fewer environmentally harmful policies. China also surprised many with its target of carbon neutrality by 2060. These developments led Climate Action Tracker to project a more positive outcome by 2100. This good news does come with a massive health warning - the words have to be matched by actions. Many pledges to reduce emissions in the medium term have yet to be translated
into sufficient action this decade. Without this we’ll be relying on technologies like carbon capture to create negative emissions in the future. These are unproven at anything like the scale required, meaning we’d effectively be asking future generations to find ways of fixing the damage we’re creating, rather than not causing it in the first place. Wales’ Centre for Alternative Technology has already shown how we can achieve the necessary reductions in emissions using technology that already exists. We have the tools we need, the primary thing we’re lacking is the willingness to implement these solutions at the pace required. The UK can’t solve the climate and ecological emergency alone, but 2021 offers a real opportunity to influence other countries. In November, Glasgow hosts the COP26 climate conference. This will be the most important meeting since the 2015 Paris Agreement, with countries being asked to increase commitments made. 2021 offers real cause for hope, as long as we’re willing to take the actions we know we should. We can do many positive things as individuals, but we also need politicians to act and this year provides a real opportunity for them to do that.

Wrexham Foodbank - Compassion. Dignity. Justice. Community. The Wrexham Foodbank was established in September 2012 by a group of people from various churches in the town and was based at The Salvation Army. Over the next few years the project grew and in 2015 it became a charity and moved to larger premises. It now has a warehouse and nine distribution centres across the county and provides over 200 food parcels every month to local people in crisis, as well as several other initiatives such as cooking courses and Holiday Hunger schemes. To receive a food parcel you need to get a voucher from one of the Foodbank’s referral agencies. There are about 160 of these and include the Citizen’s Advice Bureau, doctors, teachers, health visitors, housing officers, social workers, and most charities and organisations working on the frontline. Vouchers can be arranged over the phone and food parcel home delivery can also be requested. Reasons for referrals vary from sickness and ill health, debt, delayed wages or benefits, fleeing domestic violence to income just not covering the cost of essential living. A food parcel consists of three day’s worth of nutritionally balanced food for the household. All the items are tinned or packeted and have been donated by members of the public. When someone comes to one of the Foodbank centres they are met by one of about 80 friendly trained volunteers who give a warm welcome. Before the pandemic they would sit and chat over a drink and cake, but sadly this is not possible at present, but the act of befriending and signposting to further help is still being done. Visitors can also request toiletries, pet food, cleaning products and nappies. The Wrexham Foodbank is part of the Trussell Trust network of foodbanks. By changing communities and minds and campaigning for evidence-based policy change they work towards the goal of seeing a UK without the need for foodbanks. A Wave of Financial Abuse COVID-19 lockdowns have brought a wave of financial abuse. It is well known that domestic abuse often fails to be noticed because it usually takes place behind closed doors. At the start of the first coronavirus pandemic lockdown in March, abuse behind closed doors became even easier for perpetrators to perform. Now, after almost nine months of various social restrictions, there is a different kind of abuse emerging in new numbers from behind closed doors – financial abuse, particularly of the elderly and the vulnerable. With vulnerable people self-isolating due to a greater likelihood of them catching COVID-19, and, if they do, becoming incapacitated or dying, more have become reliant on others to handle their affairs or have made provisions for the unexpected. The law governing someone’s legal right to handle the financial affairs of another thankfully offers several layers of protection against abuse, but we must all remain vigilant and if we believe someone is being financially abused we should report it to social services or to the police. The same applies if we believe someone has been coerced into appointing an
attorney in their LPA, or naming a beneficiary in their Will. If you suspect and have any evidence of financial abuse, a solicitor can help you apply to the Court of Protection (CoP), which has the power to authorise an investigation by the Office of the Public Guardian (OPG). The CoP can make decisions for people who do not have mental capacity to make their own choices, including what happens when they die. More and more solicitors are advising worried relatives and friends in respect of whether an attorney has acted wrongfully from a legal perspective and are helping to make applications to the OPG and CoP. Also on the increase are cases of contentious probate where Wills and Trusts are being disputed. Never more so than now has it been important to stay vigilant, protect the vulnerable, and talk to a solicitor if you have any concerns about the financial and mental wellbeing of someone you know, or if you believe a Will should be contested.

Gresford Community Council Latest News Lighting Gresford and Marford Street Lighting is now completely LED! The Community Council replaced their lighting this year and Wrexham Council have followed suit with theirs. This means a reduction in both the Carbon footprint and costs - down by £7000 per year! Hugh Jones Councillor for Rossett Village Christmas: A massive thank you to all who contributed to making our village look so special for Advent and Christmas. The creative Advent Calendars were amazing as were the individual decorations on the tree. A special thanks to the family who re-created the Advent scene by the Weir after their original creation was stolen. Thanks to the businesses and many residents who made a special effort to lighten the darkness of the Pandemic. Boundary Review: It was good to see that the Boundary Review actually listened to the voices of the local community who overwhelmingly opposed their proposals to merge Burton with Llay. The proposal now is to make Rossett a two-member ward so they have ignored the views unanimously expressed by Wrexham Council not to increase the number of Councillors. The fact that Welsh Government decided that each County Councillor would represent almost the same number of people across the whole of Wales fails to take account of demographics and social conditions. Once again thanks to the significant number of residents who expressed their views to the Review.

Road Conditions: Following my comments last month, I have continued to raise with Streetscene the condition of our roads caused by agricultural vehicles. A number of landowners have been contacted to remind them of their responsibilities to restore the road to a safe and usable condition. In the case of Croeshowell Lane the landowner has agreed to lay gravel at the entrance to the field and to also deal with the drainage problems which created problems for the users of the lane. Narrow Lane Flooding: Highways have looked at the issues of Narrow Lane becoming flooded and have determined that there is no immediate solution to the problem due to lack of drainage. They have advised me that they will investigate again in the summer when the land is hopefully drier. Welsh Government require the Council to prioritise flooding issues to deal with locations most likely to cause risk to life, livelihoods and property. May I wish everyone Blwyddyn Newydd Dda, a Happy New Year and please stay safe.

This is causing a lot of problems and making night times unbearable for a number of residents. I’m in touch with Council officers trying to get this sorted out and to get the factory in question to rectify the issue ASAP. Now that it’s been identified where it is coming from I am shocked it’s not sorted yet given the documented problems that it’s causing and I’m asking for the pressure to be increased on this to sort it ASAP. Roads. Streetscene have been really helpful and filled a lot of potholes that I’ve been requesting recently including those in Pant Olwen that we’re pretty hard to avoid! I’m trying to get Pikey Line and other roads sorted and if you know of any potholes that you want logging for repair please just let me know.
