New Year’s Resolutions How to Stay Motivated

1. Have a strong WHY What's your “WHY”? This is the strongest motivating factor. You will need to have a very good reason why you want the change, why you want to adopt a new habit. It needs to be the kind that really excites you. Once you have that vision, you will be able to set the new habit in motion.

2. Make a decision By making a firm decision to adopt a new habit, you can trick your brain into action.

Whether you are a fan of new beginnings or not, January is a good time of year to think fresh goals and aspirations. Some of us have already made New Year’s Resolutions, while others maybe just thinking about a few positive life changes.

This is all very noble, but research shows that 80% of people give up on their resolutions by the 2nd week of February.

So, why is it so hard to make positive changes?

HERE COMES THE BAD NEWS: We are badly wired. Our brain is designed to protect us; so the minute we perceive anything as hard to do, our brain can quickly trick us into not doing it by coming up with a list of reasons why not to do it.

GOOD NEWS? Motivation is the key.

Over the years, these three main principles have worked for me and many of my clients:

Put pen to paper and write it down. If, for example you have decided to get up at 5am every morning to exercise, then as soon as you wake up, just do it. Don’t even think about it. Look at your written goal and just do it. Don’t give the brain a chance to come up with excuses, just because it is hard.

3. Continue being inspired To keep up your motivation flair going, it is helpful to surround yourself with people who inspire you. People who support you with your goal. There are also plenty of motivational people and groups in the area, as well as on-line who will keep you going. Finding the one that will keep YOU motivated is only a matter of research.

You can do this!

And don’t forget that no matter how slow you progress, you are still way ahead of everyone who isn't trying.

Enchanting Venice A destination that’s on many people’s wish lists, Venice is one of the most fascinating and romantic cities in the world. And with direct flights from Liverpool and Manchester, it couldn’t be easier to get there.

On arrival at Venice airport, the best way to start your trip is with a speedboat taxi to whisk you to your hotel in style - many hotels have their own side entrances just for this purpose. Although if you want a cheaper option, the Vaporetto (a water bus) departs from the airport to various stops around Venice but will take a lot longer!

Many of Venice’s 118 islands are connected by bridges which makes getting around on foot surprisingly simple and, although it is very easy and enjoyable to get lost in the winding streets, just look up and on many street corners you will see signs pointing you back to St Mark’s Square - so you are never lost for long!

Venice has an almost endless choice of things to see and do - world class art galleries and exhibitions, palaces, basilicas and museums.

One of the most famous is the Doge’s Palace and you need to allow a good couple of hours to browse this beautiful palace with its dark history: admire the fine paintings, see Casanova’s cell and cross the Bridge of Sighs - a melancholy passage where prisoners were forced to walk from their cells to the court and back.

Loved by visitors and locals alike, the Venice Carnival is a sight to see and the next one takes place from 27th January to 13th February. The middle weekends are the busiest with a blend of entertainment, culture and tradition: the locals take their masks and costumes very seriously and, with tickets to the balls often costing in excess of 500 euros, this is an excellent time for people watching!

Venice is full of iconic bars and restaurants and one of my favourites is the historic Caffe Florian located in St Mark’s Square itself. Opened in 1720, it has views to die for and is the oldest continuously serving café in Venice. Its frescoed interior is opulent and elegant and, as you might expect, coffee here isn’t cheap at around 10 euros for an espresso (plus a cover charge!) - but it’s worth it for the unique atmosphere and experience. And in the summer months you can even listen to an orchestra while you sip!

For a different experience, try the fabulous Oriental Bar located at the front of the beautiful Metropole hotel. Once an orphanage, this is where Vivaldi gave classes and composed some of his most famous pieces. The bar offers more than 30 variations of the famous Venetian Spritz

and over a dozen different Martinis - all served with immaculate style and a touch of theatre. The hotel itself is worth a visit: still family owned, this stunning hotel houses the family’s eclectic collections of antiques and objets d’art .

Despite its reputation, Venice does not have to be expensive: walk away from the main Squares and you will find plenty of small traditional restaurants offering local fish and meat dishes at reasonable prices.

I dined at the Osteria alla Biford on Campo Santa Margherita - this is very popular with locals and serves local meat, fish and cheese delicacies.

Many restaurants also offer set menus which are very affordable and, if you fancy an authentic daytime snack, look out for the arancini sold at many shops - you will often see long queues of locals for the best ones!

By EssentialsMAG gardening contributor CAROL EDWARDS Writing this article for 2018 seems strange as we are in the middle of our Christmas preparations at home, and everyone has just recovered from the heavy snow that swept the country. However in the gardening world it is surprising just how many jobs there are still to do to start the gardening year. The greenhouse still needs clearing out and disinfecting, I still have to accomplish that I am ashamed to admit! My son swept the snow from the roof for me so there was no damage done luckily.

Any of you who have Dahlia or Begonia tubers stored will need to check them for any signs of rot as it can soon spread, and remove any dead flowers from your Winter pansies to stop them from going to seed. Any old leaves on Hellebore plants will need to be removed as well, my ornamental grasses need cutting back quite near the ground, this will help them to make new growth for the season ahead.

One of the nicest things about this time of year is when the seed catalogues start to arrive, it gives you time to start planning any changes in your gardens for next year. This is a comfortable occupation with a nice cup of tea or coffee seated in your favourite chair in the warm.

In the Greenhouse it is time to plant Amaryllis bulbs in pots now, these will flower in the Spring, however cold it is most greenhouses are quite comfortable to work in this time of the year.

Rossett Annual Light Switch On Event Following the arrival of the Christmas Tree in Rossett, the annual light switch on event took place on Thursday 30th November. The tree had been adorned with decorations made by various groups from within the village. It was an enjoyable evening with singing from St Peter's Choir along with pupils from Darland High. A raffle was organised which raised in excess of £1,300 with proceeds being split between Rossett Village Hall, Burton & Rossett Horticultural Society and the Emma Jane Trust.

Mountain Rescuers Urge New Year Ramblers to Stay Safe

The first week in January is all about making resolutions and the notion of getting fit is one that features on many people’s lists. There is no better way to achieve that resolution than walking on a regular basis and for many people in the region that means heading for the hills to tackle the likes of the Clwydian Range or the Berwyn Mountains.

Attempting to cope with the increase in more people exploring the outdoors at this time of year are the brave Mountain Rescue teams who in 2017 have recorded a record year for call-outs across Wales. In North Wales, Llanberis Mountain Rescue saw a record year with more than 220 incidents, while Aberglaslyn Mountain Rescue Team, which covers parts of Snowdonia and North West Wales, dealt with over 70 incidents in 2017.

As a result of these figures walkers are being urged to be better prepared before heading to the hills with Chris, one of many involved in the Mountain Rescue service, making the point that it is Mountain Rescue teams feeling the pressure of increased rescues. “We are more than happy to see people outdoors enjoying themselves and by the law of statistics if more people are out and about you’re going to see a few more people come unstuck,” said Chris. “The main message is how much of strain this puts on our resources. We have to fundraise more, put more fuel in our vehicles, buy more medical supplies, etc. As a result of every rescue, it costs us a lot more to keep the team going and so we’re always having to be on the look out for new fundraising ideas. I don’t think the rise in numbers is to do with misadventure, it has more to do with the law of averages – we’re seeing more people in the hills and that is affecting the number of people we have to rescue.”

Chris puts the emphasis on the need to plan ahead, check weather conditions, wear the right kit and carry paper maps as well as GPS devices. “Make sure you plan what you’re doing and that people know where you are going so in the event of you not returning someone has the knowledge of where you’ve gone. Go properly equipped – there are so many websites which can suggest what to take but the minimum is some appropriate footwear, something warm and waterproof and make sure you have food an water. It’s also worth thinking about your ability to navigate.”

Local Birds & Wildlife

By Rev. Hugh Linn Mid-December's heavy snow followed by frost boosted the number and variety of birds visiting local gardens. Long-tailed Tits, for example, which move around in family groups have been recorded at garden feeders in parties containing more than 20 individuals. This winter there has been a surprising invasion of Hawfinches. These scarce and elusive finches have powerful beaks strong enough to crack cherry stones. Their nearest regular breeding site is in the Conwy Valley. Cheshire's last recorded Hawfinch colony was in Eccleston.

During my time as Rector of the parish I had them as garden residents and birdwatchers from far and wide used to come specially to see them.

Sadly the colony was abandoned in 1991 but they were not forgotten. Over a decade later I was unexpectedly accosted by a complete stranger in Chester with “Excuse me. Aren't you that Vicar with the funny birds in his garden?” Such is fame!

Following the recent invasion it is quite possible some could turn up locally.

Siberian White-fronted Goose

On 13th November a Siberian White-fronted Goose appeared on Gresford Flash. The name “white-front” (from the Latin “frons” meaning forehead) refers to the white patch at the base of the bill which, along with dark barring on the flanks and smaller size, distinguishes it from the Greylags with which it associates. Since then it has been seen on a number of occasions.

31 Goosanders were on the Flash with a Mute Swan on 28th November and a Long-tailed Duck has been seen in Fagl Lane Quarry. Apparently Gresford's much loved Mandarin Ducks (known affectionately as Jack and Edna) have not appeared on the village lake this winter but there have been a number of Mandarin sightings on the River Dee between and Holt and Farndon.

Despite the wet summer the Butterfly Conservation Society reports that Red Admirals have done well and numbers have increased considerably. A few decades ago this was regarded as a strictly migratory species but, thanks to climate warming, it is now largely resident preferring to cope with the British winter by staying put and hibernating.

EssentialsMAG Tasty Recipe

Spiced Lamb Steak and Couscous INGREDIENTS

Couscous

4 lamb chops or 2 lamb steaks

½ cup couscous

½ chilli, chopped

cucumber chopped

1 tsp honey

coriander, finely chopped

1 tbsp coriander finely chopped

mint and parsley

1 clove garlic, crushed

1 lemon, freshly squeezed

1 tbsp olive oil

1 tbsp olive oil

½ tsp cinnamon

2 spring onions, finely chopped

½ tsp cumin

1 small handful of sugar snap peas, chopped ½ fennel bulb, finely chopped

METHOD Combine all spices, oil and honey.

Marinade chops or steaks.

Cook under grill according to manufacturers instructions.

Sprinkle with coriander before serving.

Serve with cucumber and parsley couscous, or a pitta pocket and a salad of greens.

Couscous (prepare in advance, if possible) Soak couscous as per instructions.

Combine with remaining ingredients.

By Jenny Dutton The performance of ‘City on Fire’ by District 14 Youth Theatre on November 29th in the hall at the Trust was an enormous success, supported by over 100 people. The director, Andy Taylor-Edwards congratulated the young cast and technicians for a superb job in recreating this complex and challenging tale, and for the support they had received, to make a memorable and enjoyable evening. Two new ten-week free courses are on offer at the Trust starting 11th January; Level 1 / 2 Word Processing 10-12pm and Image Editing 1-3pm. Over the Christmas period annual maintenance work was carried out in the Main Hall with a light sand and re-varnish to keep the floor in good condition and new LED lights fitted. The hall is a popular venue for parties, exercise classes, conferences and large meetings and is in regular weekday use by Gresford Playgroup so any work has to be scheduled around bookings. Refurbishment of the main hall kitchen is being planned for 2018.

Getting Back on Track After Christmas

By EssentialsMAG fitness contributor HELEN CONWAY Apparently the average Brit consumed a whopping 5000 calories on Christmas Day. And although for many it's the day when the most veg is eaten, the mince pies, Christmas cake, chocolates, alcohol and sheer volume of food takes its toll.

So how do you get back on the health wagon after such an indulgent break?

1. Don’t be too hard on yourself.

Remember, Christmas was a time to relax and wind down. And this often includes a lot of socialising. But with that goes the fun of catching up with people you don't see often, being able to have an extra drink, watching a bit more TV with the family.

Give yourself permission to enjoy this, but don't berate yourself for it after the event.

Channel that energy instead into getting back on track.

4.Eat your veggies.

Full of fibre, nutrients and minerals, veggies will fill you up and nourish your body after a period of indulgence. Be adventurous and make your veggies interesting.

Financial News with Hadlow Edwards Is 60 the new 50?

Let's start 2018 with a look at an area you need to consider carefully given the changes in the world of pensions in the last few years.

If you are 50+ and perhaps thinking of working for longer than you once were - have a think about the following. If you have a money purchase (defined contribution) pension, each year you will receive a statement showing you how your funds are performing. You may notice something called ‘lifestyling’ being mentioned - and you need to really understand what this means for your pension pot. The idea with lifestyling is that as you get nearer to retirement, the pension fund provider often automatically starts to reduce the level of risk taken with your pension.

The question to ask is; Is that a good idea for YOU? The exact method varies between providers, but a typical structure would involve moving 75% of your fund into fixed interest areas and perhaps 25% into cash holdings automatically over a 5 to 10 year period up to your chosen ORIGINAL retirement date.

Until recently when at retirement age your only option was to consider accessing some tax-free cash if you wanted to and then look to buy an annuity to provide an income for life with the balance of your fund.

But today the annuity route is not your only option. The new more flexible pension access regime we see now may lead you to consider not allowing your pension to be treated in this way if longer term growth is still wanted.

If you want to consider a more flexible approach to your income and tax free cash planning for retirement - you may be well served considering holding more of your pension fund in areas offering potentially better returns in the medium and longer term.

Secondly when you were 30 you may have planned to retire at 55. Your fund would have been 'de-risked' for perhaps just five years from age 50 or thereabouts. Now in your 50's you may well be considering working until say 65 or 70. Do you really want to be switching your pension funds steadily into low yielding areas, and then leave them there, perhaps for the next 20 years? That's probably an unrealistic timeframe to potentially miss out on better growth prospects.

Of course, lifestyling will help protect you against short-term falls in the value of your pensions savings as you get nearer to retirement. That is probably only suitable if you intend to purchase an annuity. In truth, unless annuity rates improve - most of you reading this will not go down this path.

A tailored solution to fit individual needs has an obvious appeal over a 'one size fits all' approach, where your pension just moves with the crowd.

Your retirement planning is much more important than just seeing how it goes!

The first thing that you should do, is to look on the page that your spouse has signed and check if there is a sentence that says your spouse expects you to pay the costs.

If so, you will need to take legal advice, so that negotiations can be entered into, with a view to you being released from the same. In addition a solicitor would advise you on the contents of the divorce petition and whether or not (in the case of Unreasonable Behaviour Petitions) the allegations would harm your case, for example financial issues or issues relating to children. Then they would file the Acknowledgement of Service protecting you from such. Please remember there is a time deadline on returning these papers to the Court, so you will need to seek advice immediately, otherwise you could have a situation where you are served personally with the divorce papers and such might increase the costs that you may be ordered to pay.

I have been served with divorce papers, but I don’t want a divorce. What can I do?

You should first of all discuss this with your spouse to see if there is any way you can resolve your marital problems. You could suggest going to a Relate Counsellor which might help. If your spouse is unwilling to agree to the same, then you have to decide whether or not you want to defend the same or that you agree, not admitting to the allegations and making sure that your spouse is not seeking costs from you.

If you decide to defend the proceedings , then you will need to file an Answer with the Court. Please be aware of the deadlines placed upon you by the Court and act immediately. Unfortunately defending proceedings can prove to be very expensive and so you have to ask yourself, that even if you were to succeed, would it in reality, result in your spouse returning to you. The fact that you have defended the proceedings ,may result in your relationship being worse than when the proceedings started.

I have been served with divorce papers and my spouse is claiming everything, eg: property adjustment order; lump sum; pension provision. What should I do?

This is an area that you should consult a solicitor upon. Your spouse has what is called a “prayer” in the petition which means that he/she can make an application to the Court at any time for a “financial remedy order”.

Such order will cover property transfers; lumps sums; maintenance for a spouse or pension provision. You do not have the benefit of such prayer and there may come a point where you will need to make your own application to the Court if matters are not resolved before the decree is made absolute.

News from Wrexham County Council Dydd Llun Pawb Tŷ Pawb is the new £4.5 Million development in the heart of Wrexham. This month’s spotlight is on Simon O’Rourke Simon O’Rourke is a local, award-winning chainsaw sculptor creating pieces of art out of wood that beautifully compliment and enhance their surroundings. Together, with his lovely wife Liz, they run their business from Hem House Farm in Rossett.

Tell me a little bit about what you do?

I am a chainsaw sculptor. I turn large bits of wood into smaller, pretty bits of wood!

I also sculpt other materials such as clay and ice, but my preferred material is wood.

I produce fine pieces of artwork using waste timber or standing stumps using a variety of power tools and hand tools.

These works-of-art range from classical sculptures of human and animal form, to abstract work.

My chainsaw carving exploits have taken me all around the world. I have competed in many chainsaw carving competitions in the USA, Japan, Canada, Holland, Germany, Denmark and the UK, placing highly in many of them.

How did it all begin?

I took my degree in illustration, specialising in children’s book illustration. After my

course finished I needed a full-time job and wound up becoming a tree surgeon, which wasn’t exactly a natural career progression!

I soon learnt how to use the chainsaws and decided tree surgery was a great career to pursue. Then one day I watched someone using a chainsaw to carve wood and thought “Umm... I can draw and I can use a chainsaw - I really want to give that a go!”

Can you tell me about any memorable projects you’ve worked on?

One of my most recent memorable projects was in Great Sutton in Ellesmere Port where the local community pitched together to save a plot of land from developers. I was commissioned by the ‘Friends Of Meadow Park’ to create a sculpture trail, funded by Tesco Bags!

I decided to write a unique children’s story and illustrate it with carvings. So, I created

a sculpture trail in the woods made up of nine carvings. The story is in poem form and follows the story of Ruby the owl looking for the perfect home! Ruby visits lots of different woodland creatures along the trail until she finds a hollow in a tree which is just the right place for an owl to sleep. The story is called “Is This My Home?”

The project went down very well and plans are afoot to produce a children’s book to accompany the trail later this year. It’s very exciting as my career has finally come full-circle.

What do you find most satisfying about what you do?

It has to be peoples reactions to the sculptures I create. When you get it just right, or the piece touches someone, that’s very rewarding, especially when it is a memorial piece, or a carving of an animal for instance, who has passed away.

And the most challenging...

Learning how to be a businessman and an artist at the same time, as sometimes the two are completely opposing. I constantly push myself to carve as realistically as possible and I want each piece to be better

than the last. Every time I carve the human figure I scour it to see what I could have done differently. Over the years I have got better at knowing when to stop, and knowing when a piece is complete and good enough. Learning the commercial aspect of my work has been the biggest challenge.

What advice would you give to your younger self?

“Give yourself more time to research.” I’ve got better, but I still try and cram too much in the diary. I’m usually starting the next project before I finish the last. Realistically you need time to come down from one project before you start another. As a creative person having a ‘breather’ inbetween projects is important.

Hugh Jones Councillor for Rossett High speed broadband Burton and Golly I have received confirmation from BT that the work to provide High-speed Broadband for Burton will be completed at the end of December, commissioned during January and released to service providers by the end of January. This has been a long time coming but hopefully the service will be available throughout Burton and Golly.

Planning application former Golf Course Public Meeting The date for this meeting has been arranged to take place on Thursday 25th January at 19:45pm at Rossett Village Hall.

Representatives of the proposed developers will be in attendance together with details of the plans they intend to submit to Wrexham CBC Planning Department. The meeting is part of the pre-application consultation which places a responsibility on developers of significant schemes to carry out pre-application consultation Hedges I am still receiving numerous complaints regarding hedges overgrowing footpaths and highways, it is the landowners responsibility to ensure that hedges do not obstruct either the footpath or highway.

Streetscene Officers spend a significant amount of time chasing up people to keep hedges from causing obstructions. This is time that would be better spent on other duties. I would appeal to residents to ensure hedges are cut where necessary before the nesting season embargo on March 1st.

Post Office The Community Council is still working with Cadwyn Clwyd to evaluate options for a Community Post Office in the Village.

Budget consultation Following the recent consultation on the budget proposals by Wrexham CBC we received 3,797 responses, there was support for the majority of proposals however concerns were expressed about a number of areas, particularly the eventual removal of financial support for the PCSOs; and cuts to the Peripatetic Music Service and Education. As a result we will be proposing a revised budget that protects 50% of the PCSO funding and provides increases in support for the vulnerable who receive services from Adult and Children’s Social Care, provides increases in Education and makes a contribution to Peripatetic Music Service. This will result in a 3.9% increase in Council Tax which will still leave Wrexham with one of the lowest Band D rates in the UK. On the PCSOs I am working with North Wales Police to deliver a revised Service Level Agreement that reflects the reduction in local authority funding. Wrexham is the only county in North Wales to part fund PCSOs. I wish you all a peaceful and healthy 2018.

Blocked drains Many blocked drains were reported and unblocked after the snow we experienced last month but if you are aware of any others, please let me know and I’ll get them logged with the Council.

Dog fouling There’s been an increase of complaints regarding this issue over the past couple of weeks, particularly along Stancliffe Avenue and Wynnstay Lane.

People shouldn’t need reminding to clean up after their dogs and so in order to try and limit these incidents, I’ve asked for an increase of visits to the area from the Environmental Enforcement Team.

Politics and a pint Cllr Atkinson and I will be at the Red Lion on Thursday 18th January from 7-8pm and will then move onto the Griffin from 8-9pm.

As always, its just an informal chat about any issues you may have in the area to bring to our attention and we welcome you to join us to talk these through.

Parked cars There have been a few complaints about cars being parked too close to junctions or blocking people’s driveways.

Understandably, as it was Christmas and we all get extra visitors around that time, this will happen but it’s worth being mindful when parking your car, so it doesn’t become a nuisance to other road users.

Andrew Atkinson Councillor for Gresford Santa visits The Santa visits on Friday 15th December were a huge success, we visited lots of children and raised a good few quid for Gresford and Marford Playgroups. Huge thanks to Marc Williams my sleigh driver and Rachel my elf!

Thanks again to Gresford Spar, Cllr Russ Gilmartin, Cllr Hugh Jones and All Saints HSA for providing sweets. I had a great time as Santa and look forward to next year!

Gresford Christmas fayre We had good numbers throughout the day but my goodness did we pick a bad day for the weather! Our big marquees smashed in the wind early on leaving a big gap and a number of stall holders pulled out or left early due to the high winds and rain.

All-in-all though it was very festive and raised more money for the two playgroups (totals all to be announced soon).

Big thanks to Sarah Atherton, Rod and Alison Thompson, the team at the Plough, the two playgroups and many others for their hard work, there's lots to build on and it'll be even better next year.

Politics and a pint If you want to chat to myself and Cllr Russell Gilmartin about any local or national issues in an informal setting you can ďŹ nd us by the bar in the Red Lion from 7-8pm and the Griffin from 8-9pm on Thursday the 18th January.

Survey Ranks Wrexham as ‘Happiest Town In The UK’!

A survey by financial group Provident finds out that Wrexham people are the happiest and most friendly in the UK! Provident’s biannual report asks residents to rate their local area on different aspects such as safety, amount of gossip and friendliest community.

An updated report from Provident titled ‘Unbroken Britain’ has disclosed the safest communities in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

As part of its biannual report Provident has surveyed 2,830 Brits to find out how welcoming, friendly, polite, safe and happy residents in each city of the UK feel their community is at present, compared to that of 6, 12 and 18 months ago.

The biggest change is Birmingham who were deemed as the 6th most welcoming city six months ago but have now fallen 11% meaning they are now the most unwelcoming city in the UK! Sheffield is now the 7th happiest city moving from the bottom of the table six months ago.

Residents were asked to rate on a scale of 1-10 on how they felt within their community.

Speaking about the survey data, Joe Bickerton, Destination Manager at Wrexham County Borough Council said: "What a great piece of news for Wrexham! Although the sample size for the UK was relatively small, Wrexham has beaten off competition from residents in major towns and cities across the UK to take first place, so there's been a real feel-good factor on social media today.

“Added to this, we learnt from the town centre team that footfall in the town continues to remain high - so we're doing all we can to ensure that the buzz about Wrexham - and the wider County continues for the future prosperity of all those who live & work here!"

The Balfour Trust have donated the sum of £500 to Darland High School The money is being used to support the important work being done at the school with engaging students in outdoor activities and community work.

This year, the money will be used to develop the Duke of Edinburgh’s award scheme.

Mike Jones, who is a governor at the school , said “I have worked in partnership with the Balfour Trust for two years and they have been really helpful and supportive of our students and staff. I know that Mr Coyne and the other staff who put so much work into developing the programme at Darland are really pleased because the money will enable students to complete their bronze award and begin their preparations for next year’s silver award work.”

Challenge Yourself in 2018 for Hope House & Ty Gobaith Hope House and Ty Gobaith are looking for energetic people to sign up to their sporting fundraising events as part of Team Hope House and Ty Gobaith in 2018. The children’s charity are backing a range of events from half marathons, aquathons and triathlons as well as organising their popular annual Cycle Challenge and their brand new Snowdon Trek.

First out of the blocks is Chester Half Marathon and Shrewsbury Aquathon on April 29 followed by various other half marathons including Lake Vywny and North Wales half marathon and the popular Shrewsbury Triathlon.

Challenges are subject to registration fees and minimum sponsorship for each event entered. In return supporters will receive their free Hope House running vest, fundraising pack and support up to and on the day. If supporters have already registered for these events or wish to register for an event not listed, they can still become part of Team Hope House and Ty Gobaith by committing to raise minimum sponsorship.

The first ever Hope House and Ty Gobaith one day Snowdon Trek will take you to the summit of the highest mountain in England and Wales, Mount Snowdon, on Sunday July 1.

The trek will follow the most popular route to the summit, the Llanberis Trail, with a team of experienced mountain guides, guiding you along the route at check in points.

Registration is £20 plus £100 sponsorship per person (to include free t-shirt).

The annual Hope House and Ty Gobaith Cycle Challenge reaches its 10th anniversary in 2018 and will take place on Sunday August 5. The popular ride will be going back to its original two scenic routes – 56 miles to Lake Vyrnwy and 72 miles to Bala Lake. Cyclists will be treated to a snack stop at a Half Way Feed Station and a delicious home-made feast of cakes and savouries at the end.

Cyclists can register for the early bird price of £25, on the day entry will be available at £35.

Every week, three local families face their biggest fear and their child dies, tragically Hope House and Ty Gobaith can only afford to help one. RSPCA - Feeding Garden Birds in Winter

Helping garden birds can be as rewarding for you as it is for them. By using bird tables and hanging feeders, you can bring wild birds right up to your window!

What should you feed garden birds?

• Suitable seeds and grains (like nyjer, millet, oats, and sunflower seeds).

• Only feed peanuts if they're unsalted, fresh and sold for human consumption or by a reputable feed shop. To protect chicks from being fed whole nuts and choking, provide peanuts in good quality mesh feeders.

• Cooked pasta or rice, boiled potatoes, cheese, uncooked and unsalted bacon rind, raisins and sultanas.

• Net-free fat or suet balls attract a wide range of species and provide a great boost of calories.

• Apples, pears and soft fruits are popular and are a great autumn food.

• Insects such as mealworms or waxworms.

Be careful! Grapes, sultanas, raisins and some artificial sweeteners are toxic to dogs.

When do they need extra food?

Birds will benefit from being fed all year round – not just in the winter months.

Fresh water is essential Keep water bowls full of clean water and make sure bowls and feeders are placed far away from bushes and other areas where predators (such as cats) might hide.

Be clean Many garden birds die each year through the transmission of diseases. It’s important to clean all feeders weekly - water containers daily - and dry them before refilling. Simple tasks like rotating feeding and drinking areas will help reduce the transmission of disease.

What to do if you find a dead bird Please report any dead or diseased birds in your garden to the Garden Wildlife Health project (GWH). Report an incident by completing an on-line survey on their website: www.gardenwildlifehealth.org
