EssentialsMAG December 2024 - North Wrexham/Cheshire Magazine

Page 1

Welcome to our December issue!

As we approach the end of the year and the festive season begins, I’d like to send my warmest wishes to our wonderful community. December is a time for reflection, gratitude, and spreading joy, and I hope this December issue of EssentialsMAG captures the spirit of this special season.

At this time of year, I’m asking our readers and customers to do just two things:

Please shop locally as much as you can. If everyone in our community spent just £5 extra per week with a small local business, it would make a real difference in helping them thrive and continue serving us for years to come.

Secondly, let’s look out for our elderly and most vulnerable neighbours, who may struggle to get to the shops or keep their homes warm in the colder months. A quick check-in can make a big difference.

So, as we enjoy the twinkling lights, let’s take a moment to reflect on the year gone by and look forward to the promise of new beginnings in 2025. Thank you all for your support this year.

Wishing you a merry Christmas!

Welcome to Wrexham Lager

In a groundbreaking new partnership, James Wright, CEO of Wrexham Lager, announced that Hollywood stars, Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds, have joined as co-owners of Wrexham Lager Beer Co., alongside the Roberts family. The acquisition was completed through Red Dragon Ventures, a joint venture established by The R.R. McReynolds Company, majority owners of Wrexham AFC, and the Allyn family of Skaneateles, New York.

“As Co-chairmen of Wrexham AFC we have learned a lot,” said Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds, “The connection between club and community, the intricacies of the offside rule and the occasional need for beer – especially after finance meetings. Wrexham Lager has a 140-year-old recipe and a storied history and we’re excited to help write its next chapter.”

James Wright expressed his excitement about the international potential this partnership unlocks. “On a personal level it’s been an invigorating 12 months running the business, with international expansion into Australia and Scandinavia, with the US and Canada coming shortly, and this announcement is only going to elevate the brand even further. If ever there was a moment to raise a glass, I think this might be it.”

Young Volunteers Win National Award

A group of dedicated young volunteers at Maes y Pant have been nationally recognised, winning the prestigious ‘Young Volunteer of the Year 2024’ Award. The accolade was announced during the Keep Britain Tidy Green Flag Awards’ Best of the Best ceremony in November.

Bamba, Christoph, Henry, Josh, Ted, and Oliver have been attending the monthly volunteer sessions at Maes y Pant for nearly three years. Their hard work and commitment have made a significant impact on maintaining and improving this cherished green space. This award is a fantastic achievement and a proud moment for Friends of Maes y Pant. Congratulations to these inspiring young people on their well-deserved success!

A big thank you to everyone who supported the Hotpot Supper event on the 6th November at The Golden Lion.

We had a great night! Thank you to Allan and his staff for looking after us so well. £600 was raised for Christ Church and a donation of £130 to Rossett Food cupboard.

Thank you, Lesley

Hwb Yr Orsedd

We’re Open!

The Hub finally opened its doors on October 23rd, and we want to thank all members of the community who have supported or visited us. The front-of-house service is run by volunteers, so as we continue learning and undertaking training, we thank you for your patience.

Opening times

The Hub is open to the public daily from 9am to 4pm, except on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Hot food is served until 2:30pm, with drinks and cakes available afterwards. On a Thursday morning, we host the Community Café which is run by the Community Agent.

Hire the Hub

The Hub is available for hire by groups and individuals during the evening and on our closed days. We’re excited to see bookings coming in and will be sharing details of upcoming community activities and events.

So far, we have a Craft and Chat group who meet on Mondays at 10.30am. The Community Choir meets on a Wednesday, 6pm - 7pm. We are exploring opportunities for home working groups and toddler groups. The Rainbow Centre will be running an ‘Active Futures’ programme for 12 weeks in the New Year, further details will be circulated as soon as available. And the mobile library have commenced their monthly visits.

There’s still lots to do, and we are constantly reviewing what we do and how we do it.

Hub Manager

We now employ a Hub Manager, Bethan Edwards, who is coordinating the activities.

If you would like to be involved, or hire the Hub, please contact Bethan on: hwbyrorsedd@gmail.com, or pop in one weekday to speak with her directly.

Choosing the Right Stairlift

A stairlift is a motorised chair that travels along a rail fitted to your staircase, offering people with limited mobility a safe, easy way to move between floors. For many, whether due to ageing, injury, or disability, a stairlift can provide essential support, making the whole home accessible and allowing for greater independence.

Who benefits from a stairlift?

Stairlifts are particularly useful for elderly people, those with disabilities, or anyone who finds stairs difficult due to reduced mobility. A stairlift reduces the physical strain and minimises the risk of falls, providing reassurance and greater safety in a multi-storey home.

When it comes to costs, prices in the UK typically range from £1,500 to £5,000, with curved stairlifts generally more expensive than straight models. Installation fees are often additional but ensure a professional, secure fit. For those needing a stairlift temporarily, rental options are available – a great choice for short-term needs without the full financial commitment.

How long does it take to install?

In most cases, stairlift installation is straightforward, requiring no major alterations to your stairs. A professional surveyor will assess the space to determine the best fit. A straight staircase installation typically takes four to six hours, while curved or complex staircases may take longer.

NHS funding for stairlifts is uncommon, though some individuals may qualify for funding or grants through local councils if there is a medical necessity. Routine maintenance is recommended to keep your stairlift functioning smoothly and safely. Many companies offer servicing packages, helping ensure regular checks and repairs. With proper care, a stairlift can last between 10 to 15 years, or even longer.

Are stairlifts safe?

Safety is paramount, and modern stairlifts are equipped with seat belts, swivel seats, and safety sensors to prevent accidents. For outdoor requirements, there are weather-resistant models specifically designed for external use. Those in rented properties can usually have a stairlift installed with their landlord’s permission, especially if it is a long-term solution.

How do I choose the right stairlift?

There are a number of different features and options available with a stairlift. The most important thing is that it meets your current and future needs and is safe. A professional survey will guide you in selecting the best model, ensuring a safe, tailored fit that meets your requirements. Please check the accreditations and reviews of the supplier you choose. Wrexham Tourism News

Wow, the busy month of December is upon us now and Wrexham’s hospitality businesses are gearing up for one of their busiest periods of the year!

As always, there’s a lot going on in the County this month, some of which I’ve highlighted below.

Our popular Victorian Christmas Market returns for four days from 28th November to 1st December, coinciding with the relaunch of the renovated Butchers and General Markets in town. In addition to this, Fair Events are running the Wrexham Christmas Market on 6th-8th and 13th-15th December at Bellevue Park, with an array of gift stalls and food and drink available.

A few weeks ago, as I’ve previously mentioned, Wrexham Lager teamed up with several local hospitality businesses to create the Wrexham Taster Half-Day Tour which is now available for online bookings (making a great gift!) at; www.pure.wales/tour/the-wrexhamtaster-half-day-tour

If you’re heading out for a walk between Christmas and New Year - why not take the scenic loop between Ty Mawr Country Park and Trevor Basin (Pontcysyllte Aqueduct), via the historic village of Cefn Mawr? The aqueduct will close for important annual renovation works again between January and March,

so it’ll be your final chance to cross it this winter. Alternatively, get away from it all with a walk in the stunning Ceiriog Valley, with a pit-stop in Llanarmon at the award winning Hand at Llanarmon for a drink by the open fire.

Finally, as we head into 2025, we celebrate the National “Year of Croeso” and we’re starting this by launching a new food and drink competition of hospitality businesses around the County from 13th January. Themed “Wales meets North America”, the challenge asks chefs and bartenders to create a dish/drink to celebrate our transatlantic links throughout January into early Feb. Keep an eye on our This is Wrexham socials and web site for more news in early January about where you can try these dishes.

In addition, we are also working on bringing back our annual Tourism And Hospitality Awards to celebrate those individuals who’ve helped our industry grow significantly in the last year - many of who don’t always get the recognition they deserve.

From all of the team here at the tourism partnership - and our Visitor Information Centre in town, Nadolig Llawen a Blwyddyn Newydd Dda and see you i n 2025!

Gresford Trust Newsdesk Latest News

Gresford Trust is pleased to announce that Mr Mark Perry has accepted the position of Vice Chairperson. Mark has been a Trustee previously and we wish to thank him for his on-going commitment.

In preparation for the autumn and winter months, we would like to thank John Dutton and also Tom, Jonathon and Mikey for giving the hedges along the grounds, driveway and upper car parks a final cut of the year with their tractors and heavy machinery.

Essential maintenance needs to be carried out again on the roof of the Memorial Hall. During the last spell of especially heavy rain, we suffered another leak. We are very grateful to Gino Paletta and his team for fixing the issue and their continued support in clearing the high-level gutters.

Thank you to those who use the gates and turnstiles to access the grounds along Clappers Lane, rather than climbing the fence. Unfortunately, the fence is weak in many areas due to it’s age and it has required a lot of time and cost to repair over recent months. Many thanks to Ian Gibson for his help and assistance in this regard.

The Trust recently had a tree condition survey carried out on all our grounds, including the beautiful lime trees along Chester Road.

We are drawing up a plan of remedial works as there are a number of trees that are in need of care and essential attention. We are also aware of the need to create a long-term plan for the maintenance, care and protection of all the trees on the grounds and we have established a new working group to focus on this.

Thank you to all the users of the Trust – the regular hirers and attendees of the many sessions held here, plus all those who hire our rooms for parties and functions. As a not-for-profit charity we wouldn’t keep going without you!

The Gresford Trust would like to wish everybody a healthy and happy time during the coming festive season.

Gardening Tips and Advice December - Winter Frost

As we approach the shortest day of the year in December, you will need to work to keep you warm outside, such as digging and tree pruning. Check your winter protection and if you have a greenhouse make sure the heater is working. Hopefully there are not too many jobs left to do this year so you will have time for some fireside garden planning.

TOP 10 JOBS TO DO IN THE GARDEN THIS MONTH

1. Check your winter protection structures are still securely in place.

2. Check that greenhouse heaters are working.

3. Insulate outdoor taps and prevent ponds from freezing.

4. Prune open-grown apples and pears (but not those trained against walls).

5. Take hardwood cuttings.

6. Keep mice away from stored produce.

7. Reduce watering of houseplants.

8. Prune acers, birches and vines before Christmas to avoid bleeding.

9. Harvest leeks, parsnips, winter cabbage, sprouts and remaining root crops.

10. Deciduous trees and shrubs can still be planted and transplanted.

Local Birds and Wildlife News

At times during the past couple of months, my garden has been a virtually bird-free zone despite the regular provision of their usually popular assortment of bird food. In previous years the tally of bird visitors at this time has frequently exceeded 20 species present together including our first wintering Blackcaps. Several of my fellow bird-watching friends have noticed a similar shortage in their gardens. Possibly, the recent warmer autumn weather and a good berry crop out in the countryside may have contributed to the shortage. But other species, such as wildfowl, have been observed in flight around the district although Gresford Flash, traditionally one of our best local sites for ducks and geese, has also been sparsely populated and often empty.

The goose species have been observed flying over the area drawing attention to themselves by their noisy calls and characteristic V-shaped flight patterns. These include resident Greylags and Canada Geese and increasing numbers of migrant Pinkfeet from northern regions such as Iceland. In recent years, these visitors have wintered locally in large numbers around Cheshire and North Wales. One flock I spotted over Saighton numbered over a thousand birds. Starlings are also famous for forming huge flocks known as “murmurations”. Small murmurations regularly occur on overhead wires around the Trevalyn area but they move away for the night. If any of our readers know of a local Starling roost. I'd be pleased to hear from them.

Another common species that forms large communal roosts is the Jackdaw. There is a huge and very noisy Jackdaw roost in the Highfield area near Wrexham, containing thousands of birds which can be seen and heard at dusk pouring in from all directions.

EssentialsMAG Tasty Recipe

Eggs Benedict with Smoked Salmon

Eggs Benedict with Smoked Salmon is a classic British dish, and makes for an extra-special treat as a Christmas Day breakfast.

INGREDIENTS

4 eggs

2 tbsp white wine vinegar

2 English muffins, halved

A little butter, for spreading

8 slices smoked salmon

Chopped chives, to serve

METHOD

HOLLANDAISE SAUCE

2 tsp lemon juice

2 tsp white wine vinegar

3 egg yolks

125g unsalted butter, diced

First make the hollandaise sauce. Put the lemon juice and vinegar in a small bowl, add the egg yolks and whisk with a balloon whisk until light and frothy. Place the bowl over a pan of simmering water and whisk until mixture thickens. Gradually add the butter, whisking constantly until thick – if it looks like it might be splitting, then whisk off the heat for a few minutes. Season and keep warm.

To poach the eggs, bring a large pan of water to the boil and add the vinegar. Lower the heat so that the water is simmering gently. Stir the water so you have a slight whirlpool, then slide in the eggs one by one. Cook each for about 4 minutes, then remove with a slotted spoon.

Lightly toast and butter the muffins, then put a couple of slices of salmon on each half. Top each with an egg, spoon over some hollandaise and garnish with chopped chives.

Seasonal Treats in December

In December, the culinary scene shifts to embrace the essence of winter. While fresh produce can be somewhat limited, there are still plenty of delightful options to savour during this holiday-packed month.

Root vegetables

Root vegetables like carrots, parsnips, turnips, and rutabagas are in season. Their natural sweetness and earthy flavours make them ideal for hearty stews, roasted dishes, and comforting soups.

Brussels sprouts

These little green veggies are at their peak in December. These small gems are best when roasted with a touch of olive oil, a sprinkle of salt, and maybe a drizzle of balsamic glaze.

Citrus fruits

Oranges, grapefruits, clementines, and lemons add zesty and refreshing notes to winter meals. They're perfect for citrus salads, freshly squeezed juices, or even a citrus-infused marinade for roasted meats.

Winter greens

Kale, chard, and spinach thrive in the cold weather, making them excellent choices for salads, stir-fries, and sautés. These leafy greens provide essential vitamins and a burst of green in your winter diet.

Pomegranates

These have ruby-red seeds that are sweet and tart. Perfect for adding a pop of flavour to your salads, cocktails, and desserts.

Nuts

Nuts play a significant role in many festive recipes. Walnuts, chestnuts, and hazelnuts are readily available, perfect for adding crunch and depth of flavour to biscuits, cakes, and stuffing. Great for snacking too.

From the wild

Wild herbs: Some hardy wild herbs can still be foraged, such as rosemary and thyme.

Seaweed: Along the UK's coastal regions, certain types of edible seaweed, like Dulse and Sea Lettuce, can be foraged yearround. They add a unique flavour to dishes and are often used in soups and salads.

December Shopping List

Apples, Pears, Quinces, Cranberries, Sloes, Figs, Clementines, Oranges.

Brussels Sprouts, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Leeks, Parsnips, Swedes, Turnips, Kale, Carrots, Beetroot, Chard, Spinach, Celery, Radishes, Shallots, Garlic.

Wales Net Zero 2035

A group of experts commissioned by the Welsh Government recently reported on how Wales could reach net zero by 2035.

Why 2035?

The UK and many other countries currently have a target date of 2050 for achieving net zero. However, 2050 is neither the fastest we could possibly get there or when we should ideally get there; there’s overwhelming evidence that the sooner we reduce global emissions, the less severe the consequences of climate change will be.

Recent flooding in Spain provided an incredibly graphic illustration of the impacts already being experienced. As the frequency and severity of climate-related disasters increases, so do the human and financial costs.

There’s widespread consensus that delaying action will prove far more costly than moving faster and that if we can reduce emissions more quickly we should.

Net Zero 2035 reports

The group published the outcomes of their work in September. You can learn more about the people involved and read their reports on this website: www.netzero2035.wales.

An overarching summary is accompanied by more detailed reports focusing in on specific questions:

• What could education, jobs and work look like across Wales by 2035?

• How could Wales feed itself by 2035?

• How could Wales heat and build homes and workplaces by 2035?

• How could Wales meet energy needs whilst phasing out fossil fuels by 2035?

• How could people and places be connected by 2035?

Why this work really matters

A frequent criticism of the net zero pledges made by many countries, including the UK, is a lack of detail on how these aspirations could actually be delivered. The Wales Net Zero 2035 Challenge Group’s work is really significant as it actually sets out how we could get there by 2035.

Not every claim we might see or hear about the potential impact of reaching net zero is well-founded. I’d therefore recommend taking a look at the Net Zero 2035 team’s work, as I think it provides as comprehensive, well-informed and objective an assessment as you’re likely to get. It’s not the one and only way we could possibly get there, but it offers a very good starting point for sensible conversations about where we go from here.

Top 5 Christmas Movies with Surprising Financial Lessons

As the holiday season rolls in, there’s nothing like cosying up with a cup of hot chocolate, a warm blanket, and a classic Christmas movie. They can generate joy, nostalgia, and maybe even laughter or tears, but hidden in these familiar stories are some surprising lessons about money, values, and financial wellbeing. From Ebenezer Scrooge’s misadventures to Kevin McCallister’s “Home Alone” antics, here’s a look at five Christmas time movies that provides financial wisdom as well as holiday cheer.

1. A Christmas Carol Financial Lesson: Don’t Let Money Harden Your Heart.

Ebenezer Scrooge is wealthy, but he’s let his obsession with money isolate him. Only after he’s confronted with his loneliness, caused by his greed, does he change his ways. This tale reminds us to balance wealth with generosity. Giving back and showing kindness can bring more joy than having the biggest bank account.

2. Home Alone

Financial Lesson: Emergency Savings Matter. The McCallisters’ unplanned Christmas crisis teaches us a lesson about preparedness. Kevin uses his wits to defend the house, but you can’t help but wonder: what if they had been financially prepared to avoid the chaos of missed flights, unexpected hotel stays, and emergency plans? Having a little extra set aside for unexpected events, whether it's a holiday mishap or something more mundane, can help ease stress in these situations.

3. The Grinch Who Stole Christmas Financial Lesson: Experiences Over Excess.

The Grinch learns that Christmas joy isn't about the gifts, decorations, or feasts; it’s about connection. This heartwarming realisation encourages us to rethink holiday spending habits. Rather than splurging, focus on creating memories with loved ones which will have a lasting impact.

4. Jingle All the Way

Financial Lesson: Avoid the “Last-Minute Rush” (and the Costs It Brings).

This movie’s humorous look at last-minute Christmas shopping chaos is a lesson in itself. By putting off gift shopping until the last minute, Howard and Myron end up in chaotic situations—and likely overspend. Planning ahead can help avoid panic, overspending, and the pressure to make hasty purchases.

5. Christmas with the Kranks

Financial Lesson: Align Spending with Personal Values.

In this story, the Kranks’ initially try to skip Christmas to save money. But in the end, celebrating with loved ones means more to them than saving a few bucks. It’s a good reminder to keep your spending aligned with what matters most to you and your familyit makes budgeting feel less like sacrifice and more like intention.

Whether you’re watching these films for a little holiday cheer or for a bit of nostalgic joy, if you take a closer look - you might find valuable lessons hidden among the holiday spirit.

And while the financial advice in these movies may be more implied than explicit, the messages they convey resonate with the timeless wisdom of generosity, preparedness, and pursuing what really matters.

As you get into the holiday spirit, remember: wealth is about more than just moneyit’s about the experiences, values, and relationships that bring true joy.

Happy holidays from all of us at Hadlow Edwards - and enjoy the movies!

Business Advice Learning Hub

Feeling like a fraud in business?

Running a business is incredibly rewarding, but it can bring unique challenges - one of the most common being imposter syndrome. If you’ve ever felt like a ‘fraud’ in your own business or doubted your worth and skills, you’re not alone. Many business owners experience these feelings due to the pressures of meeting customer needs, building credibility, and growing a business.

What is imposter syndrome?

Imposter syndrome is the feeling of selfdoubt or fear of being ‘exposed’ as a fraud, despite evidence of success or capability. For business owners, it can mean feeling underqualified or undeserving, even when your business is thriving. You might feel your achievements are due to luck or timing rather than your skill and hard work.

Starting and running a business involves taking risks, navigating a steep learning curve, and balancing multiple roles, from marketing and sales to finance and customer service. Business owners often wear many hats, which can quickly become overwhelming and leave you questioning whether you’re doing ‘enough’ in each area.

This constant juggling of tasks, coupled with the pressure to succeed, can amplify self-doubt and lead to feelings of inadequacy, especially when things don’t go as planned or when challenges arise.

How to manage the feelings

The good news is that imposter syndrome can be managed. Start by recognising these feelings - it helps to remember that imposter syndrome is common, even among successful entrepreneurs. Track your wins by keeping a record of achievements and client feedback, which can remind you of your progress and skills. Focus on your strengths rather than what you lack, and celebrate the unique qualities you bring to your business. Avoid comparisons; every business journey is unique, so it’s best to focus on your own path. Talking to other business owners can also normalise your experience and reduce feelings of isolation.

Above all, remember that success in business is about persistence, not perfection. If you feel imposter syndrome creeping in, remind yourself that running a business is a significant achievement. Embrace your accomplishments, reach out for support, and know that you belong in the business world.

Health and Fitness for Everybody

In our forthcoming ‘Essentials’ articles, we will introduce you to a few of our clients each of differing ages, with differing problems and levels of health and fitness and show how we helped them.

This month, we will introduce you to Dawn Dawn is a 56-year-old triathlete, from Gresford. During the pandemic, Dawn bought a bike and wet suit and started training. She had never competed in any triathlon events before. She decided to try a local event, and realised she was quite good at it, so had another go and did even better!

She registered formally with British Triathlon, the national organisation for triathletes, and began training with Wrecsam Triathlon Club. As her training progressed, she participated in more events culminating in the Bala Olympic Distance Triathlon. She was duly selected for the European Championships in France to represent Great Britain in her age group of 55-59.

Three weeks before her first big race, Dawn developed a pain in her heel. The timing could not have been worse. Having worked with Dawn’s father a few years before, we were happy to help and see if we could get her back to peak fitness.

We took a full history to understand her

problem, carried out a comprehensive assessment and identified a neural tension issue. We gave Dawn a series of exercises and equipment to help address the problem. She completed the event but despite our best efforts, unfortunately time was against us, and it prevented Dawn from performing as well as she hoped, finishing 22nd in Europe.

“I tried everything – I even performed my exercises in the back of my camper van on a balance board, but it wasn’t to be this time,” said Dawn.

We are continuing to work with Dawn as she strives to overcome her injury and improve her performance for the next event. We wish her well for 2025. She has already been pre-selected to represent Wales at the British Championships and the World Championships in 2025. In future editions, we plan to update you on Dawn's progress.

If you need help managing an injury, recovering from illness and operations, or getting back into balance with your health, fitness, hobbies, work, sporting activities or life in general, please get in touch to see if we can help you.

In a medical emergency such as choking, blacking out, chest pain and serious blood loss call 999 or attend A&E.

• A first-aid kit, including bandages, plasters, a thermometer, antiseptic and eyewash solution.

• Pain relief such as aspirin, paracetamol, and ibuprofen.

• Oral rehydration salts.

Lesley Griffiths MS Member of the Senedd for Wrexham

Bowel cancer is one of the most common cancers, with more than 2,000 people diagnosed every year in Wales. However, if it is detected in its early stages, the cancer is treatable and curable, with almost nine out of ten people surviving.

Since October, 50-year-olds registered with a GP in Wales will automatically be invited to receive a free NHS bowel screening test kit every two years. It’s part of a phased approach to lower the screening age, in line with recommendations from the UK National Screening Committee. Reducing the minimum age for the programme down to 50 means more people will qualify for the screening tests and, therefore, it is hoped more lives will be saved. The self-screening kits will arrive in the post so people can complete the test in the comfort of their own home.

In the early stages of bowel cancer, people may feel well and have no symptoms so I urge everyone in Wrexham who receives the invitation to take up the offer as it could save your life.

Coinciding with this positive development, I recently met with members of Bowel Cancer Support North Wales, a self-help group that provides support and advice to people affected by bowel cancer, their families and carers. The group meets on the first Thursday of every month in the Wynnstay Arms Hotel in Wrexham city centre between 7pm – 9pm. Anyone in the Wrexham area affected by bowel cancer is welcome to attend and all the information can be found on their website: www.bowelcancersupport.co.uk.

For 85 years, Citizens Advice has been offering practical, independent advice and support to those in need.

To mark the milestone, Wrexham Citizens Advice recently held a special celebratory event and it was a pleasure to pop along.

The team provide such a valuable service to the local population and I am sure they will continue to play a crucial role in the community for many more years to come.

Andrew Ranger MP and I recently visited the team at Wrexham Lager.

These are exciting times for the iconic brewery, with Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney recently being confirmed as co-owners.

The future is extremely bright and having worked closely with Wrexham Lager for a number of years, I will continue to do all I can to support them.

Finally, as this is my final column of the year, I wish EssentialsMAG readers a happy and peaceful Christmas and send you very best wishes for 2025.

Hugh Jones & Ross Shepherd Councillors for Rossett

The River Alyn. We have been in contact with Natural Resources Wales about ensuring the river is kept clear. A number of large tree trunks have gathered at the weir and in other places. We have asked for these to be removed as soon as possible.

Street Scene Services. We met with our Street Scene Services Officer recently to highlight a number of issues which need addressing in the village. These include cutting back trees as necessary near street lamps to improve lighting and ensuring gullies are clear and are regularly checked.

Policing. We recently met with the District Inspector and Sergeant and have agreed that we will establish three priorities for progress to be reviewed on a three monthly basis. The first three are speeding, parking on pavements and drug dealing, particularly at the Station Road under pass. Following this, we have been on patrol with North Wales Police carrying out speed checks. A number of motorists were given advisory notices about travelling in excess of 20mph in areas such as Trevalyn, Burton Road and on Wrexham Road. The Roads Unit have been out on a number of occasions and will issue fixed penalty notices. We have been assured these random checks will continue to be carried out to help address many residents' concerns about vehicles breaking speed limits throughout the village.

Darland Academy. We arranged for representatives from the school and football club to attend the Community Council, at which, a number of issues were raised on behalf of and by local residents.

The planning application is still in process and is likely to go before the January meeting of the Committee.

Parking. Minor adjustments to parking restrictions around The Green are being advertised for consultation, the purpose being to protect junctions and improve visibility. In addition, Highways have confirmed that a number of line markings will be repainted shortly throughout the village. This will also include replacing damaged and missing signage.

Castle Green Homes. We continue to deal with a significant number of issues relating to the development and the associated road works. Following this, the Head of Environment visited the site at morning school time to see the chaos being caused. Unfortunately, statutory undertakings do not require Council approval to dig up the highway

Happy Christmas. We would both like to wish you and your families a very Happy Christmas and all the best for the New Year as we head into 2025. As always, if there is anything we can assist you with, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Beryl Blackmore - Mayor of Wrexham & Councillor for Marford & Hoseley

As I write this, I am just home from the Remembrance Day service at the Cenotaph in Wrexham. What an amazing turnout! From the older generation to the younger generation, Wrexham residents pulled out all the stops to support our Armed Services. The Guiding and Scouting members did themselves and their Leaders proud, along with many other organisations. I believe this was the case in Gresford and Rossett too, which is super. I am sure the weather helped, thank goodness.

As far as the Ward goes, I am dealing with mud and ivy on the pavement on Marford Hill, down as far as the old ATS site. If you feel any of this is from your land, please take a look and see if you can clear the area in question. More and more, people are choosing artificial grass for their gardens. I have made enquiries about this being an option in a Conservation area and the answer is yes, it can be used. Residents on Mayflower estate, Woodbridge Avenue and Raynham Avenue are quite rightly asking when some work will start on general improvements on the pavements etc. I am trying to get an answer as to whether there is a forward plan so we can at least have an idea. Watch this page!

The weather will, I expect, be turning colder soon so try and make use of any warm spaces to visit - your local supermarkets, for example, are offering hot drinks/soup etc, whilst Club continues every Monday from 1pm to 3-30pm in Gresford Methodist Church. Here, a warm welcome awaits you and certainly a few more men are needed please. There is a Beginners table so do think about giving it a try. The wellbeing Hub in Wrexham on the Swimming Baths site is another super place with a lot going on every day, with parking outside. Ty Pawb is warm inside too with lots of eateries and artists’ work on show.

The market refurbishment will be finished and officially opened on 28th November.

They have a Victorian theme and I was lucky enough to have a preview. I am very impressed! Please take a look and let's try and ‘use them or lose them’, as the saying goes. Check out car parking on the Wrexham website or visit the Tourist Information Centre, next door to Ty Pawb, as they have an excellent array of information leaflets.

I have attended Darland Theatre as Mayor and I will definitely be going again. I hope to tempt my friends as it was a lovely night. The William Aston Hall is proving to be a great attraction and their shows are top class. It's near home so no cost for a coach etc.

I visited Maes Y Dderwen, a complex for Independent Living on Grosvenor Road, Wrexham. The residents had high praise for their flats. The Drawing Board in Lord Street, Wrexham was another visit full of craft items, cards and lovely paintings - all for sale. An amazing Bowel Cancer Support group meets once a month in The Wynnstay Arms, Wrexham too. A warm welcome is assured as I certainly had one. And, last for this month, a visit to The Savvy Fox Pub in Hotel Wrexham, formally Holt Lodge. Again, a very warm welcome was received. You won't recognise it from its earlier days!

The best way to report a problem is via my Council email as, with your permission, I can forward emails to the correct department who can then read the details straight from yourself.

Jeremy Kent Councillor for Gresford

It’s nearly Christmas!

It is odd to be sat writing for what will be the Christmas edition of EssentialsMAG!

November has seen some movement on a number of items that I have been working on across the village, and it has been great to be out and about speaking to residents. I’m sure there will be much more over the coming week as I deliver my Christmas Cards to residents, wonderfully designed by pupils from All Saints’ School as part of my annual competition.

Gasworks

It’s clear that the roadworks caused by the laying of the new gas pipes has reached the most disruptive phase. I wrote last month about some of the issues that have been caused and how I have been working with Officers to address these.

I have raised further my disappointment that the communication has been limited and we/I have not been kept up-to-date where there are changes to the plan or unexpected delays. I hope to address this in the coming weeks and, when the works return after Christmas, that I will be in a position to keep residents better informed.

I can only apologise that this has not been the case to date.

Anti social behaviour

We now have a new PCSO for the Village and I have met with her to discuss some of the issues that have happened over recent weeks with Halloween and bonfire night, as well as some general low level disruption.

The case remains that it is vital incidents are reported and logged with the police. 101 – Non Emergency Line (or online form) and 999 – Emergency number.

The Wrexham Rural team covers a wide area and, whilst there are several proactive initiatives, the response teams cannot deal with incidents if they are not reported.

Christmas

Finally, I cannot write here and not mention that I have spoken to Santa and I know he is looking forward to the Santa Sleigh Ride through the village and his appearance at the Gresford Artisan Market (Sunday 1st December). He will also visit All Saints’ School in the coming weeks!

The Sleigh Ride is coming together and will take place on Friday 20th December, following the usual route. Keep an eye on Facebook for times. Funds raised will be to support two local nursery groups in Gresford and Marford.

Have a very Merry Christmas and festive season, and as always, if you have anything you wish to raise with me, then please do not hesitate to contact me.
