Welcome... Welcome to our December issue!

January Deadlines: Editorial - 4th December Advertising - 11th December

As the year draws to a close and the festive season approaches, I extend my warmest greetings to our wonderful community. December is a time for reflection, gratitude, and spreading joy, and I hope this December issue of EssentialsMAG captures the essence of this special time of year.

We’ve got the local area covered! Delivered by hand to 6,400 homes and businesses more than any other magazine in our area.

Once again at this time of year, I’m urging our readers and customers to do just two things: Please shop local as much as you can. If everyone in our community spent just £5 extra per week with a small local business it would help them to stay open in the long-term. Look out for our elderly and most vulnerable neighbours, who may find it difficult to get out to the shops or to keep their house adequately heated during the colder months, and just check that they are OK. So, amidst the twinkling lights, let’s reflect on the year gone by and look forward to the promise of new beginnings in 2024. Thank you all again for your support this year. Wishing you all a merry and joy-filled Christmas!

All the best, Vicky Heathfield

ThankYou A Coffee Morning held at the Golden Lion on 17th October raised an amazing £450 for Christ Church Rossett. A big Thank you to everyone who supported the event. Lesley Bennett

A Final Celebration A familiar building in Rossett - The Church of Christ the King, has closed permanently due to declining attendance. The Church opened in 1969 as part of the parish of St Francis of Assisi in Llay, but with covid and the parallel declining attendance, the Church has been unused for the last two years while parish services have moved to Llay. Now, the Diocese of Wrexham has decided, with great sadness, to permanently close the church doors. A final Mass was held on 28th October celebrated by the Bishop of Wrexham, the Rt. Rev. Peter Brignall, and other members of the clergy. There was a good turnout of past and present parishioners for this sad occasion, but also with happy memories of the church being part of many lives in the Rossett area community.

The Balfour Trust for Rossett If you run a local group that promotes healthy lifestyles or social welfare, The Balfour Trust, an historic local funding source, may be able to help you. It is open to groups or clubs for any age group based in Rossett. This year The Trust is hoping to hear from more organisations that support the older members of our community. Let them know what projects you have organised for 2024 and how a grant from The Balfour Trust could help you realise your plans. Please get in touch by email: m-t-r.rossett@pm.me or by letter to: The Trustees of The Balfour Trust for Rossett c/o Mr. Mike Thompson, 13 Park View, Rossett, LL12 0DH Closing date for applications: 31st January 2024

Jonathan Ratcliffe Fun Day Back in July, an amazing £6,000 was raised at the Jonathan Ratcliffe Family Fun Day - 15 Year Memorial, held in the garden of the Golden Lion in Rossett. The Ratcliffe family and the Fun Day organising committee, are delighted to announce the benefactors of the donations: • Bowel Cancer UK - £2,500 The remainder of the funds were split between the following benefactors: • The Rehabilitation of our friend, Liam Morgan • The Chris Williams Fund (Spinal Rehabilitation) • Nightingale House Hospice • The Unbeatable Eva Foundation • Wrexham Foodbank The Ratcliffe family and the Fun Day organising committee, would once again, like to thank every single person involved in organising, attending, donating and helping celebrate Jonnie's spirit and memory.

A Victorian Christmas There’s a festive treat in store when the Victorian Christmas Market returns to Wrexham city centre on Thursday 7th December (12pm - 8pm). There’ll be over 80 stalls from Queen’s Square to St Giles’ Church selling a huge array of gifts, clothes, food and drink. There’ll also be street performers and entertainers, and a Victorian-themed fairground and carnival. Fun for all the family.

Has Your Self-Care Slipped? By EssentialsMAG motivation contributor SASHA KENNEY Have you struggled to keep your healthy habits now we are entering winter? It’s the end of the year, so not your usual time to prioritise self-care, but we all know the positive effect of exercise and self-care on our mental health, so let’s look at some of the reasons why self-care slips. ...I can’t find the motivation We all lack motivation at some point... but here is the thing... motivation is not something that will hit you in the face while you are sitting on the couch. You need to go out and find it. Work for it. I can not stress enough, how important an ‘accountability buddy’ or ‘supporting community’ is when you are trying to find your motivation and achieve your goals. • Get an ‘accountability buddy’ or join a ‘supporting community’. An accountability buddy is someone who will work with you to create goals, checking in regularly to help ensure that you’re each following the plan. Another way of having accountability in your fitness journey is to dabble in new adventures, like group classes. You’ll find people who inspire you and get you excited to come back. There are also many communities that will keep you in check. Just have a little look. You are welcome to join Hoola Nation online (hoolanation.co.uk).

...Self-care feels selfish You’re taking care of work, home and the people you love. So often, you are the last one on the list. Especially in this challenging season, it can feel self-centred to do something just for you. I love that generosity in your spirit, but here’s what I know to be true... • Self-care lets you offer your best to others. When you start nurturing yourself, you feel better, you become stronger - and you actually have more energy to bring to the people you care about. ...I’m too busy! Between home and work, there are so many demands on your time. It feels like you just don’t have time to take care of yourself. You think, “I’ll just get through this one busy week.” But then one week becomes two, becomes ten. • Start with bite-sized healthy habits that fit into your full schedule. There are so many things you can try, from a simple walk or short workout you can do from home. Start small and build up gradually. No matter how small the improvement, it is always worth looking after yourself. Let's start with one small step in the right direction today.

The Electric Revolution By SATISH CHAPPITI, Arc Healthcare Dental Services Plaque is a sticky substance made from leftover food and saliva that mix in the mouth. Brushing effectively and regularly prevents this from building up on your teeth. Bacteria in your mouth adheres to plaque and this is problematic as it can cause tooth decay and gum disease. There are three kinds of toothbrushes. A manual brush, a battery operated rotary toothbrush and an electric rechargeable power brush. Toothbrushing techniques have evolved over the years and in 1948 Charles C. Bass developed the technique that we most widely use today, albeit a modified version of this. It involves using a small headed toothbrush with soft bristles, angled at 45 degrees to the gums and gently moving the brush back and forth in short strokes and in a circular motion over all the surfaces of the teeth and finally front and back strokes of brushing the tongue. This is easier said than done. In practice it is actually difficult and the reason why many people fail to keep their mouth clean. The electric toothbrush has evolved over the years and finally, I believe we have a solution that enables us to brush effectively with the least effort and with consistency.

The invention of the electric rechargeable power brush has been a real game changer. I personally recommend Oral-B Electric toothbrushes to all my patients and have been using them myself for the past 25 years. Why are they so good? The small, round precision clean heads are just the right size to enable you to clean one tooth at a time. The bristles are gentle and have a colour-coded band to let you know when to replace it (approximately three months). There is a gentle vibration that helps to remove plaque and a pressure indicator which prevents you from brushing too hard. The latest IO versions even let you know when you are not brushing hard enough. The head moves in a rotary motion and all you need to do is move the brush back and forth along the gum line and up and down along the tooth surfaces. It is the only way to clean the inside surfaces of the lower front teeth. Once you start using an electric toothbrush, you will not want to go back to using a manual brush again.

A Chain of Connected Parts By PHIL CABRAL from Natural Balance Exercising ‘the core’ is a concept that I don’t understand. I also find that it doesn’t work on so many levels in my daily work, despite having tried to understand, and use it, with hundreds of clients over many years. This theory is widespread and one that is touted everywhere but, to me, it is truly undefinable. If ‘core exercises’ get people moving and exercising and is something they believe in, then it serves a purpose as I am passionate about helping people increase their activity. However, I ditched it many years ago and now prefer the chain theory. The human ‘kinetic chain’. ‘Kinetic’ meaning movement. The chain theory is a simple concept based on the idea of the weakest link. One body part links to the next and so on - essentially, we are a long chain of connected parts. The daily challenge with my patients is to find the ‘weakest’ link in the moving human chain and then ask WHY is this link not working well? It’s not as easy as saying ‘you have a weak core so it needs strengthening’, or ‘your back is tight so it needs stretching.’ That view and approach is too simplistic. Anyone who has had a long-standing back problem will tell you that. They know. They have tried those approaches and while they may

get some relief, these methods often don’t get to the cause of the problem. Anyone can demonstrate exercises to strengthen weak muscles and stretch tight soft tissues, or use massage guns, heat treatments, rubs, gels, manipulation, acupuncture and many of the other painrelieving approaches that exist in the world. During lockdown, online health activity – from fitness regimes to more accessible advice - came to the fore which, at that time, filled the gap left open from the lack of face to face appointments. However, without the understanding of why these problems exist in the first place, many of these approaches end up treating the symptoms and not the causes. We need to understand and address the underlying causes. That’s the real challenge. Only when we understand ‘why’ can we truly help people. If you are struggling with a persistent problem and want to try an approach based on evidence and experience, and ultimately, change your life, then call us or book online. We’ve been helping people for more than 20 years.

BRHS - Burton Rossett Horticultural Society Gardening News

By EssentialsMAG gardening contributor CAROL EDWARDS As I write this we are all thinking about Christmas I expect, however there are still some things to do in our gardens! Some plants can be planted in December as long as the ground is not frozen, waterlogged or during a drought, not that that is happening at the moment with all the rain and storms. Bare-rooted roses for example, can be planted from November to April. Bulbs can be planted into pots and placed under cover, for example, onion seeds into pots and under cover. Onion seeds, for example, can be potted and then kept under cover in a cool greenhouse. Plants for winter colour can include heathers, and tulips are best planted during cold weather. A good idea which combines Christmas with gardening is to plant bulbs in containers to give as presents. Winter bedding plants include hardy cyclamen, bellis daisies, pansies, polyanthus and violas. Hellebores, as well as providing colour, have essential early nectar for pollinators. Winter sown broad beans will be earlier to provide vegetables as well. You can also sow flower seeds such as sweet-peas and

coleus, this will give you a head start with early flowering for next year. Salad leaves or winter greens and garlic are also fine, providing they are under cover too. It is a good time to plan next year’s garden too, look in seed and plant catalogues for inspiration. You can clean and sharpen your tools and secateurs, and give the greenhouse a wash and brush up too. If you have any tender plants outside, remember to protect them with a covering of fleece. I have just bought a small sack of vermiculite to lighten the bulb-fibre in the containers in my garden. I realise that I am late planting them. However, the weather has been so wet that I have been unable to do it. This year, I have been using peat-free compost for the first time and have found the compost much too heavy and claggy, I thought I would try and lighten it. Watch this space, I will report any developments. Wishing you all a very merry Christmas! Information provided by: www.brhs.org.uk

The same day a further sighting of these birds flying in distinctive ‘V formation’ passed over Trevalyn. On 24th more were seen in flight over Burton. Other wintering wildfowl started to appear with a solitary Goosander on Gresford Flash. By 1st November numbers had increased to five and, if the pattern of previous years is repeated by December, the number of Goosanders on the Flash may run well into double figures. Also seen on the Flash have been a small number of Shovelers. WAXWING Locally there have been several sightings of birds of prey. Around Commonwood Road there are at least three Kestrels in residence. Buzzards, once rare, are now widespread and can be seen circling around in the sky or resting on lamp posts. One Buzzard can be seen regularly on a lamp post by the intersection of the B5102 and the A483. Nearby on 2nd November a Red Kite was spotted over Marford Hill. Sparrowhawks are regular garden visitors. Some of the smaller migrants like Redwings, Fieldfares, Chiffchaffs and Blackcaps, which are usually garden visitors, seem to be running late this winter. My favourite winter migrant is the strikingly plumaged Waxwing. So far there have been reports of quite large flocks in Scotland and on the east coast.

In December 2012 around 60 Waxwings were found in Harwoods Lane with a similar number on the Wrexham Industrial Estate in December 2016. Hopefully this year's abundant berry crop will lure some in our direction.

Gresford Trust Newsdesk Latest News By Ian Gibson, Chairperson Gresford Trust As we reported in our last article, the boiler which provides hot water to the bulk of the building was causing concern. Unfortunately, a subsequent service has highlighted the full extent of the deterioration in its condition and an immediate replacement has proven necessary. The Trust had already taken steps to replace it and quotes were at hand.

A lot of the day-to-day work around the Trust is carried out by volunteers and this does help control our outgoings. If you feel you could help in any way, our doors are always open to people wishing to help the Trust.

The cost of this work will be in the region of £17,000! I have been asked how the Trust intended to fund this level of expense. Through the prudent management of Trust funds over many years, we are in the fortunate position of being able to meet this cost from current financial reserves.

We are pleased to announce that we will once again be running our ‘Warm Room’ from 4th January. Every Thursday morning, we will open the Blue room for the community to use free-of-charge – whether it be to meet friends for a drink and a chat or to hold a small meeting, everyone is welcome.

That said, however, the reduction in our reserves will need to be addressed. Although we do have plans to raise monies from leases, these are yet to be completed, so now more than ever, we will have to redouble our fund-raising activities.

One of our Trustees, Carole Grey, will be co-ordinating the efforts of the volunteers so please get in touch via the office if you would like to help.

Our facilities are used by a broad cross section of the community so hopefully, with your support, we can work together to rebuild those reserves. Despite these costs, planned work on the Hall will continue. Redecoration of our Blue and Green rooms, along with some painting work in the main hall, has taken place and we have also fitted new carpet tiles in the Green room.

Lets Talk Tax Returns! By RACHEL COLES Self Assessment is the system HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) uses to collect Income Tax. If you are filing your Self Assessment tax return online, it must be submitted by 31st January. It is generally at this time of year that business owners suddenly realise they need to complete their tax return. And, as the deadline looms larger, you may decide that you simply do not have the time to complete and file this yourself. Why use a Chartered Accountant? The ‘pros’ of using a Chartered Accountant to complete your personal Self Assessment tax return far outweigh the ‘cons’. It takes time to understand the system, which can be confusing - especially if you are new to it – and you may feel this time could be better spent on your own business instead. Here at Haswells, we complete Self Assessment forms every day and know the system inside out. We also reduce the chance of mistakes – which could be costly if the forms are not completed correctly.

Whether you need to pay tax and if so, how much, could depend on a wide range of circumstances. If you are trying to complete your Self Assessment tax return and are unaware of certain benefits or exclusions, it can be complicated to calculate how much you owe. You could therefore, run the risk of paying far more tax than necessary, or too little and getting into trouble with HMRC. It is important that we, as accountants, keep up to date with ever-changing tax legislation and take advantage of applicable deductions and incentives. Not only could this reduce your tax liability, but using an accountant would alleviate the chance of any wrong information being submitted, and any penalties being incurred for late returns. If you are required to complete a Self Assessment Tax Return by 31st January, and need help, we'd love to talk to you.

Personal tax advice and tax planning can save you money, time and effort. It can also improve your take-home income significantly and make your finances much more predictable and reliable in the long term.

Christmas Advertisements By JULIE GREGORY Who doesn’t love a Christmas TV ad? Each year, the Christmas TV ads are hotly anticipated and we all ooh and aah over the usual suspects – John Lewis, M&S and Aldi, to name but a few. As such, Christmas advertising has become an integral part of the festive season, playing a significant role in shaping our behaviour and setting the tone for the holiday spirit. But how has Christmas advertising evolved from traditional print ads to modern digital campaigns to reflect the changing dynamics of consumer preferences and technological advancements? Christmas advertising traces its roots back to the 19th century when retailers recognised the potential of promoting their products during the Christmas season. Print ads in newspapers and magazines became popular, featuring festive imagery and special holiday offers. As the advertising industry grew, so did the creativity and impact of Christmas campaigns. One such iconic campaign is Coca-Cola's Santa Claus advertisements in the 1930s, which made popular the modern image of Santa Claus as we know him today. Brands began using storytelling techniques to create emotional connections with consumers, emphasising the importance of family, togetherness, and gift-giving during the festive season. The advent of television in the mid-20th century revolutionised Christmas advertising.

Brands started producing television commercials, utilising catchy jingles and heartwarming narratives. These ads further commercialised Christmas, making it synonymous with gift-giving and consumerism. With the rise of the internet and digital technologies, Christmas advertising underwent another significant transformation. Brands began using datadriven marketing techniques to tailor advertisements to individual consumers. Despite the shifting mediums, one constant in modern Christmas advertising is the emphasis on emotional connection and authenticity. Brands have learned that resonating with consumers on a deeper level, rather than just promoting products, is vital. Ads that evoke nostalgia, empathy, or warmth tend to leave a lasting impact and foster brand loyalty. Christmas advertising has come a long way since its inception and, with each passing year, the marketing industry adapts to new technologies and consumer preferences, striving to create memorable and engaging experiences. May I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a very Happy 2024!

Seasonal Treats in December

In December, the culinary scene shifts to embrace the essence of winter. While fresh produce can be somewhat limited, there are still plenty of delightful options to savour during this holiday-packed month. Root vegetables Root vegetables like carrots, parsnips, turnips, and rutabagas are in season. Their natural sweetness and earthy flavours make them ideal for hearty stews, roasted dishes, and comforting soups.

Pomegranates These have ruby-red seeds that are sweet and tart. Perfect for adding a pop of flavour to your salads, cocktails, and desserts. Nuts Nuts play a significant role in many festive recipes. Walnuts, chestnuts, and hazelnuts are readily available, perfect for adding crunch and depth of flavour to biscuits, cakes, and stuffing. Great for snacking too. From the wild

Brussels sprouts These little green veggies are at their peak in December. These small gems are best when roasted with a touch of olive oil, a sprinkle of salt, and maybe a drizzle of balsamic glaze. Citrus fruits Oranges, grapefruits, clementines, and lemons add zesty and refreshing notes to winter meals. They're perfect for citrus salads, freshly squeezed juices, or even a citrus-infused marinade for roasted meats. Winter greens Kale, chard, and spinach thrive in the cold weather, making them excellent choices for salads, stir-fries, and sautés. These leafy greens provide essential vitamins and a burst of green in your winter diet.

Wild herbs: Some hardy wild herbs can still be foraged, such as rosemary and thyme. Seaweed: Along the UK's coastal regions, certain types of edible seaweed, like Dulse and Sea Lettuce, can be foraged yearround. They add a unique flavour to dishes and are often used in soups and salads.

December Shopping List Apples, Pears, Quinces, Cranberries, Sloes, Figs, Clementines, Oranges. Brussel Sprouts, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Leeks, Parsnips, Swedes, Turnips, Kale, Carrots, Beetroot, Chard, Spinach, Celery, Radishes, Shallots, Garlic.

Business Advice Learning Hub By VICKY HEATHFIELD How giving back helps your business Your local community is a stakeholder in your business, and every business - no matter how big or small – can, and should, make Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) a core part of its business model. Why? Because not only is it good for your reputation, it also makes you and your employees feel good, generates goodwill, and makes your community a better place to live. Giving back is great publicity, and an ideal way to establish your business within your local area. Your business and brand become more visible and you will attract new customers just as effectively as the smartest advertising campaign.

Donate your skills and time You can lend a few hours of your time in a “pro bono” capacity to help a local charity or non-profit organisation by using your expert skills. For example, in marketing, accounting, or building and decorating.

And it needn’t break the bank. Donating cash to a local charity is a fine undertaking but it’s by no means the only way. Here are some cost-effective ways to promote your small business for those on even the tightest of budgets:

Supporting your community requires a continuous effort and should not be considered a one-off activity. After all, you would never run a single advertisement and expect it to produce constant results! You should treat your charitable giving as a regular business undertaking. That’s how you will create a long-lasting impact and build a positive local reputation.

Sponsor a local youth sports team Add your brand name to the team kit, take advertising space in fixture programmes, offer to host the annual prize giving, or even provide the pizzas after the game! Sponsor a fund-raising event You can donate money to help offset the cost of the event, or donate products that can be given away to participants. This can be anything from fresh fruit to branded reusable water bottles.

Use local services By using other local small businesses you’re demonstrating your support for them, and they will reciprocate. If it’s a positive experience, tell others and recommend them. When businesses are more focused on supporting each other than competing, the entire local economy will flourish.

Sarah Atherton MP Member of Parliament for Wrexham For myself and thousands of veterans, service personnel and their families, the month of November is particularly poignant for us all in Wrexham. As we approached Remembrance Sunday, I was honoured to plant my tribute, on behalf of Wrexham, in the Garden of Remembrance in Parliament during a service conducted by the Speaker of the House of Commons, Sir Lindsay Hoyle MP. This year marks the 70th anniversary of the Korean War and the fitting ceremony gave recognition and allowed me, on behalf of Wrexham, to thank all those who have and continue to serve in our Armed Forces. Locally, I supported the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal, collecting donations and selling poppies in Asda, alongside cadets from The Royal Welsh (RWF), based at Hightown Barracks. Wrexham has a long and proud military history and having secured the future of Hightown Barracks, it was pleasing to hear about Wrexham’s strong and growing cadet and Army Reserve presence at the Barracks. The generosity of Wrexham people in supporting the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal never fails to amaze me. Our city’s true sense of community spirit and generosity undeniably shines through as a beacon of light in this time of commemoration. On Armistice Day itself, whilst it was disappointing to not be formally invited by Wrexham Council as a civic leader, it was humbling to attend and talk to so many people at the Ceremony at Queen’s Square. The day after, alongside Wrexham’s numerous veterans’ associations, I was

honoured to attend and speak at a service at the Normandy Veterans Memorial and lay a Parliamentary wreath at the R.W.F. Memorial, Bodhyfryd in Wrexham, paying tribute to our service personnel past and present. We will remember them. Lastly, I was delighted to attend the firstever Wrexham Business and Community Awards. After months of preparations and build-up, we came together to celebrate our exceptional local businesses, both small and large, for their invaluable contributions to our now-thriving city. With Wrexham's new city status comes exciting opportunities for job creation and growth. They are the backbone of our local economy and are truly deserving of this recognition. Huge congratulations to all the winners, your success illuminates the path to a brighter future for Wrexham. As always, if you are a resident in the current Wrexham constituency boundary and need my assistance with any local or national issues, please contact me. Gifts That Matter By EssentialsMAG environment contributor ROB RENOUF At Christmas, the happiness of children is a focus for many of us. We may spend ages trying to find the perfect gift or worry what we’ve got is insufficient. Some gifts may become treasured possessions that last a lifetime, whilst others will be discarded and forgotten sooner than hoped. At this time of year, it’s important to try to keep sight of the ‘gifts’ that really matter. A liveable planet This year has been the hottest for 125,000 years, yet this record is expected to be quickly surpassed. Plastic waste generation more than doubled between 2000 and 2019. Wildlife populations have reduced by a scarcely believable 69% in just 48 years. The list goes on and on. The painful truth is that our gift to our children is a planet in a far worse condition than the one we inherited. The way we’re living is totally unsustainable. We need to take onboard what this word actually means - it cannot possibly continue. In order for all children to have a decent future things must change very rapidly. The world isn’t going to end, but the future we’re creating for our children and subsequent generations is one of far more extreme weather, food shortages, pollution, massive inequalities, displacement of populations and increasing conflict. Unless we’re willing to recognise this reality and take action to prevent it, their future is bleak.

This may all seem extremely depressing; however, the critical point is that this is not the only possible future - we still have a choice, but the window is rapidly closing.

“Once we start to act, hope is everywhere. So instead of looking for hope, look for action. Then, and only then, hope will come.” - GRETA THUNBERG

Hope Perhaps the most important thing we can give children this Christmas is hope for the future. We must be honest - the hope we offer needs to be evidence based, rather than fairytales or glib assertions that everything will be fine. We should not tell them things will be OK, without actually making the changes required to achieve that outcome; whilst this might make them feel better in the short-term, they may not thank us when they discover the truth. If we genuinely commit to taking the necessary action, we can then be open about the challenges we face, while still offering hope that the future can and will be better.

For minor illnesses such as headaches, colds, and diarrhoea, speaking with the pharmacist should be your first port of call. We advise you check Bank Holiday opening times before visiting. Minor injuries such as bites, burns, sprains, or fractures can be treated at a Minor Injuries’ Unit. In a medical emergency such as choking, blacking out, chest pain and serious blood loss call 999 or attend A&E. Planning ahead It’s important to make sure you have all the medicines you may require ahead of bank holiday closures. Make sure to order your repeat prescription in enough time. Llay and Gresford chemist have recently become ‘WELL pharmacies’. We at Alyn

Family doctors will continue to process prescription requests within our normal time. However due to WELL pharmacies processing prescriptions at an offsite hub, five days’ notice will be required for all repeat prescription requests. Please remember you can request your medication by using the NHS Wales app. For any information about medication or prescriptions during any out of hours period visit your local pharmacy. If you run out of medicine outside of normal surgery opening hours and need some urgently, you may be able to obtain an emergency supply from a pharmacist without a prescription. A properly stocked medicine cabinet can help you to treat many common illnesses and ailments over the festive period. The following items can be helpful. • A first-aid kit, including bandages, plasters, a thermometer, antiseptic and eyewash solution • Pain relief such as aspirin, paracetamol, and ibuprofen • Oral rehydration salts • Anti-diarrhoea tablets to relieve symptoms of diarrhoea, these will not help with the underlying cause • Antihistamines which can help with allergies • Indigestion relief remedies. We wish all our patients a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Lesley Griffiths MS Member of the Senedd for Wrexham It’s been another busy month in the constituency… Happy birthday to the Wrexham Hospital League of Friends who are celebrating their 55th anniversary. As well as running the hospital shops, the League of Friends aim to raise valuable funds for the Maelor Hospital. This year alone the group has donated more than £300,000 to enable the hospital to purchase specialist equipment that otherwise would be unaffordable. This landmark anniversary is particularly important as the past few years have arguably been the most challenging in the charity’s history. All our lives were drastically affected by the global coronavirus pandemic. Charities were restricted and many were forced to think of new ways to fundraise with traditional revenues severely hampered. Thankfully, the League of Friends persevered and praise must go to all the trustees and volunteers. I was honoured to be asked to write a piece for their commemorative brochure which is being published to mark the special occasion. I am sure the charity will carry on providing an invaluable service to the Maelor Hospital and the people of Wrexham for many years to come.

I recognise the service has had a number of issues to contend with, which I thought had been remedied, but, unfortunately, it does appear replacement buses, cancellations and a reduced timetable are becoming the norm. I’ve written to the Chief Executive of Transport for Wales to ascertain the latest position and find out when constituents can expect a reliable service. Congratulations to everyone at The Venture. Wales’ flagship Integrated Children’s Centre recently received excellent inspection results. I remain so proud to be a patron of this wonderful organisation and the results provide independent evidence of what an excellent and valuable service The Venture provides to children and families in Caia Park. In addition to the perfect inspection results, I was recently invited to The Venture to celebrate its ongoing partnership with Virgin Media. Access to fast, reliable broadband is essential in this day and age and I am so pleased The Venture will continue to benefit from free ultrafast broadband. Finally, as this is my final column of the year, I wish EssentialsMAG readers a happy and peaceful Christmas and send you very best wishes for 2024.

Several constituents have contacted me lately highlighting the number of trains being cancelled between Wrexham and Bidston. On one occasion, due to cancellations, passengers had to wait four hours at Wrexham before being able to travel.

Wrapping up For the Festivities By WARREN HADLOW It’s been another interesting year across the world this year with another war breaking out in the Middle East, further deadly natural disasters, and the advancements of AI technology becoming a larger part of the way businesses think and operate – I’ll let you decide if that’s a good thing or not! Closer to home, we’ve had the coronation of our new King, Eurovision came to Liverpool, the first synthetic human embryo has been created, and the England women’s team made it to the FIFA World Cup Final – not quite bringing it home though, once again! At Hadlow Edwards, we have welcomed another handful of faces across the whole team, we continue to support a record number of clients as our team grows, and we have seen our offices transformed with our new branding. To wrap things up for 2023, I asked our team to share what tips and tricks they use to keep their Christmas budgets down in the past: • Ange Miller says “We do a family Secret Santa each year where we spend £25 on a gift and exchange them all after Christmas dinner. We also have a great laugh trying to guess who bought who’s presents – if you guess it wrong twice, there’s a forfeit!” • “I set a limit on how much I can afford each year,” says Shirley Gleadhill. “I can then plan to buy as many good presents as I can without going over budget.”

• Fiona Clarke goes on to say, “My family really enjoys spending quality time with one another, so I like to give them homemade vouchers that they can cash in throughout the year. That way, I am spreading the cost out rather than spending all in one go. They can be things like visits to the zoo or a babysitting night with my niece so that they can enjoy a grown-up night (which doesn’t cost a thing!).” • “I always remember my mum making regular contributions to a Park Christmas Savings account when we were younger. She would pay an amount each month throughout the year, and she would receive the vouchers to spend on Christmas gifts at the beginning of December. That way she was able to spread the cost across the year’s pay checks rather than taking it all out of one month.” Katy Davies tells me. There are some great ideas here that I might even try myself! All that’s left for me to say, as I know we are all looking forward to a break over the festive holidays, is that my colleagues and I wish all of you and your families a healthy, safe, and prosperous 2024. If you would like to consider some rather more important topics in the New Year, please do give our office a call on 01978 311611, or email hadlow.edwards@sjpp.co.uk. Best wishes, Warren and all the team at Hadlow Edwards Wealth Management.

Hugh Jones & Ross Shepherd Councillors for Rossett Speeding. Residents have raised concerns about the speed of tractors travelling through numerous roads throughout the village. We recently met with North Wales Police to discuss this. Further impromptu checks will be carried out, and visits made to farms, to reiterate the importance of following the Highway Code and that driving while on a mobile phone is an offence. Parking. Again we are receiving calls about inconsiderate parking around the ward. By parking on the kerbside, vehicles often make it impassible for buggies and wheelchairs to pass. If caught blocking a pavement a fixed penalty notice can be given. Slips are being given out to drivers to try and prevent poor parking. Flooding. We recently organised a residents meeting to discuss the flooding issues in the Village. Three officers from NRW and two from Wrexham Council attended. Street Scene Services have been working to ensure all gullies and drains in problem areas are again, cleared to help when we encounter heavy rainfall. This is happening as quickly as possible but is a lengthy process considering the County has over 35,000 drains to attend to. Essential ditch clearing has taken place in Burton and work has been carried out ensuring the drains on Harwoods Lane are clear. We have now received the following from NRW: “Following on from the Rossett Flooding Community Meeting on the 2nd November, we informed you that we would be reviewing the flooding that affected the community of Trevalyn during Storm Babet. This report will focus solely on what happened in Trevalyn, to allow us to understand fully what occurred during the storm to help us learn and adapt our approaches in how we respond to future flooding scenarios. We would welcome any evidence and information in relation to Trevalyn to feed into our report. Once our report is complete, we will contact those

people in Trevalyn affected by the flooding and discuss the outcomes with them. We also said that we would welcome any new flooding evidence to help improve our existing flood maps and to understand how the main rivers reacted during Storm Babet. Our intention is to generate a new flood event outline for Storm Babet that will be included within our publicly available datasets should sufficient evidence be available. We would particularly welcome photographic or video evidence which captures the extents and impacts of the recent flooding and might challenge or contradict the current flood maps. Details such as the source of flooding (River Alyn, other watercourse, surface water), depth of water, and timings of the flooding would be very helpful. We are always looking at ways to improve the validity of our flood maps and models and would welcome any evidence which has not previously been shared with us. Please note all information and evidence shared with us previously has already been assessed by us and taken into account in our flood maps, so it is new information we are asking for now.” Please send your photos/videos to floodingnorthwales@cyfoethnaturiolcymru. gov.uk. For any larger files/videos we will be able to set up a Sharefile link if required. We would wish all residents Nadolig llawen a Blwyddyn Newydd Dda, a joyful Christmas and Happy New Year.

Beryl Blackmore - Deputy Mayor & Councillor for Marford & Hoseley December already, another year’s gone by. Let's hope the coming Winter months are not too bad. After the saga with the bins not being collected, I hope the New Year is more peaceful.

extra care housing in Grosvenor Road, Wrexham, I am pleased to say the residents are very happy. It's a beautiful setting, I purchased some homemade Whisky Marmalade - I will be back!

Remember to get in touch if any planning applications bother you. I notice a couple, one being tree pruning which is very much in the hands of Wrexham Arboriculture Office as they are the ones with the expertise.

I have had a meeting with a very annoyed gentleman who is 90 years old who walks each day as much as he can. He is quite rightly cross, as when approaching the Rofft School via the footpaths, he finds cars parked on double yellow lines and blocking access across the hump on the road near the footpath. He struggles to pass these illegally parked cars, so please have some consideration!

As we enter Winter weather, alerts come from Wrexham with an emergency number to ring, so please get in touch if you need support. Lots of groups and Churches will have had their Christmas fairs by the time you read this. I hope they attracted lots of support and many people have enjoyed visiting. The warm space idea is being run again this winter in various Libraries and Community Centres. Plus many supermarkets are offering free tea/coffee and a biscuit - do take up these offers. The Marford Caffi and Exercise Club will continue in the New Year, held every Tuesday 10:20am to midday - do pop in, even just for a chat and a drink. A Digital workshop will have been running over November and December in Gresford Methodist Church aimed at the over 60s , covering 10 weeks, very successful, with just a small donation needed to cover costs. Coleg Cambria will offer another 10 weeks, so if this is something you might like to register for, get in touch.

There are two junctions causing issues for motorists and pedestrians - firstly, Hillock Lane at the Chester Road end, where large vehicles are parking on both sides of the road near the junction causing a problem for cars pulling out, and reducing visibility for people crossing the junction. Also cars parked at the junction of Claypit Lane by the Chapel - as cars turn into Claypit Lane from Chester Road, especially from the swings side, it can be scary meeting a large vehicle as you overtake parked cars. If you are using the Chapel please park in their car park. I often see lots of room and yet visitors park on the road! Enjoy Christmas with family and friends - there’s no need to break the bank! Enjoy the simple things, good company, family games and a sprinkling of nice food and the entertainment on TV.

I have visited schools to talk about being involved in the community; enjoyed a lovely Service of Remembrance at Acton Park Primary School and of course, the event of Remembrance in Wrexham - a very wet day but attended by so many residents and notably children. It was a very special event. As part of being a member of Safeguarding Scrutiny Committee, I visited Maes Y Dderwen,

Jeremy Kent Councillor for Gresford It’s nearly Christmas! It is odd to be sat writing for what will be the Christmas edition of EssentialsMAG! November has seen some movement on a number of items that I have been working on across the village and it has been great to be out and about speaking to residents. I’m sure there will be much more over the coming week as I deliver my Christmas Cards to residents, wonderfully designed by pupils from All Saints’ School as part of my annual competition. Traffic safety at All Saint’s School The Governors, Head Teacher and I recently met with Officers from the Council to discuss measures that could be implemented around the area of the school to ease traffic concerns and increase safety. After a positive meeting, it was agreed to install additional road markings, extend no stop zones and ensure adequate places to cross. These measures will help matters, but I ask all residents that may drive in that area at peak times, to do so carefully and be considerate of others. Nobody wants to think of the consequences if we do not take care. Streetscene It was great to have a walk/drive around the village recently, with the Area Supervisor from Streetscene, where I could show him some of the issues that have been raised by me and seek ways to remedy them.

The poor weather has affected the team’s ability to get some issues sorted, but they are trying their best and will get things fixed as soon as they can. As always you can report issues to me as they arise and I can get these listed. Christmas Finally, I cannot write here and not mention that I have spoken to Santa and I know he is looking forward to the Santa Sleigh Ride through the village and his appearance at the Gresford Artisan Market on Sunday 3rd December (12pm - 4pm). He will also visit All Saints School in the coming weeks!

Santa Sleigh Ride The Sleigh Ride is coming together and will take place on Thursday 21st December, following the usual route through Gresford, Marford, Pandy and Rossett. Keep an eye on Facebook for times. He is hoping for the drier night than last year!

Have a very Merry Christmas and festive season and, as always, if you have anything you wish to raise with me, then please do not hesitate to contact me.

We visited areas of flooding on Pikey Lane and Old Wrexham Road, discussed resurfacing for Maxwell Close, and repairs to sections of Narrow Lane, to name just a few. Tel: 07832 211085 Jeremy.Kent@wrexham.gov.uk

BASED IN GRESFORD

Legal Advice By EssentialsMAG legal advice contributor CAROL McGUIRE Pre Nuptial Agreements This is an agreement which many people enter into prior to their marriage. For it to be valid, it must be made no less than 28 days prior to the wedding. The citizens of the USA have used it for many years but we normally don’t hear about it, unless it is some rich Actor where millions of dollars are involved and Social Media is full of the same. In the UK it’s starting to come to the forefront more. In a Civil Partnership, it is a different document but with the same issues contained into it. Why should we enter into such agreement? Benefits It sets out all of your financial circumstances and what you would each agree to receive, if divorce proceedings were ever considered in the future. It is drawn up as a contractual document and it sets out what your Property; Income; Capital; Pension Provision; Inheritance Positions and other assets are and what you have agreed to do with the same. Were you to divorce it takes out all of the strain of such, because it shows evidence of intention. It protects your level of income. If your spouse is a Director of a Company, then it can be regulated to fit into the agreement. It also applies to property, so that if it’s intended to transfer a property to the other spouse, then such can be formulated.

Disadvantages It isn’t necessarily binding, but there are cases where the Courts have put a lot of emphasis on it. For example, if one of the parties became a Paraplegic, then the fund of assets might only be sufficient for a few years of his/her being in a private nursing home. So, whilst the Court will look at the Pre Nuptial Agreement, it may depart from it, if one of the parties has more reasonable needs ie. the one that is ill. In addition, you can’t write into it what your intentions are regarding the children. If the children’s needs haven’t been taken into the equation, the Court will depart from the agreement and provide for them as their interest is of paramount importance. You cannot change the terms of the Pre Nuptial Agreement. It lasts through the duration of your marriage. Hence, it is something that you really need to think about carefully. The problem is, that at the time this agreement is being entered into, is a time when minds are focused on wedding preparations. So the sooner you do it, the better as it allows for clear thinking and getting some legal advice.
