Bear Watching in Canada Last October, I visited Knight Inlet in Glendale Cove – a remote floating lodge 80klm north of Campbell River, British Columbia, accessible by boat or floatplane. The purpose of my visit was to see Grizzly Bears in their natural habitat – this is what I discovered…

I was lucky enough to be sat with the pilot on the 10 seater floatplane which is where my adventure began. This incredibly scenic, floatplane flight took 30 minutes from Campbell River to Glendale Cove and was breathtakingly wonderful! We landed on the crystal clear waters and chugged our way to be greeted by a couple of the friendly staff at the lodge.

In addition to bear viewing, I took an early morning single kayak with an instructor and saw seals, otters, bald eagles. This was a new experience for me – the majestic scenery and peacefulness felt incredibly special. I also managed to fit in a hike through the Great Bear Rainforest , with a knowledgeable guide – that too was fabulous.

After a quick familiarisation tour and a delicious lunch, we were kitted out in suitable attire and I was soon off on a small boat with Marie, our bear expert, and two other eager passengers. All of us excited in anticipation of what we might see. Within minutes, two young male bears were playing in the grasses around 200 metres away which we viewed through binoculars for closer observation. I was fascinated.

Further on, we saw seals who popped their heads up at the side of the boat. I was told not to point at them as they disappear under the water and don’t revisit!

The lodge provided delicious food and wine, a friendly atmosphere as well as comfortable en-suite accommodation where I slept like a log after all the outdoor activity.

As we continued along the estuary, there in front of us, was a bear was swimming in the water - her cub was on the shore! Mum was trying to entice her cub into the water to catch salmon but the cub appeared to not want to get her feet wet! It was truly mindblowing and the bears appeared not to notice we were there.

When to go?

This was an incredible experience and I can definitely recommend visiting in September/October time when the Salmon are plentiful and the bears are in the river.

However, the season runs from late May to mid-October and each season has different attractions - Early season, seals, sea lions, porpoises, dolphins and the occasional Minke whale will travel through the Inlet. In the summer, Orca (killer) Whales are plentiful and in September, the Humpback Whales are making their way from Alaska to Hawaii.

It also depends what else you would like to do whilst you are in Canada because the

Rocky Mountaineer Train which runs up to the Rockies from Vancouver is a spectacular trip and an Alaska Cruise option is a popular add-on. In fact, the bearwatching trip will represent a portion of your itinerary and whilst a bit pricey, is definitely worth it.

How much?

My package was £1260 per person based on a twin share accommodation and included: Two night package at Knight Inlet; A pre-night in Campbell River (so three nights in total); Floatplane flight transfers; All meals at the lodge, wine with dinner; All activities such as boat ride, bear/whale-watching, kayaking and an interpretive guide throughout.

As this does not include flights to Canada it can be combined with a stay in Vancouver, or part of a longer itinerary if you want to make the most of your visit.

BRHS - Burton Rossett Horticultural Society Gardening News

By EssentialsMAG gardening contributor CAROL EDWARDS What a lovely summer we are having this year, it’s a pleasure to see the garden flourishing in the sunshine. There are a number of things to keep an eye on though to keep all your plants happy, the greenhouse needs regular watering and the floor needs damping down, this helps to keep the temperature down on really hot days and we have had some of those haven’t we. The door needs to be open too and also the window vents, my youngest son bought me two automatic ones several years ago which still work very well.

I am having a glut of cucumbers this year and have given several to my next door neighbour, my tomatoes are fruiting well but are still green, I am trying plum tomatoes this year and have great hopes for them.

Now is the time to order or buy your bulbs for the autumn, I cleared out all my bulbs this year as they were past their best, so I am looking forward to replacing them. There is nothing better than several pots of bulbs dotted about the garden when the weather is cold and miserable, I can see a visit to the garden centre on the horizon.

Remember to top-up your ponds and any water features. Maybe next year I will buy a small water feature, the trouble is I have a cat who is fascinated by running water so I can see problems with that! I have a bird bath though, which is used every day by the garden birds.

Remember to prune any raspberry canes that have finished fruiting, leave the new growth for next year though. I have picked the last of the fruit for this year so that is a job for me to do.

Success for our local football team Hello Vicky, We know that you like to celebrate the success of local teams in the magazine. In light of this, here are a few words about the M&G under 10 football team... The Marford & Gresford under 10 team have been enjoying a successful summer of tournaments. They have entered four tournaments in four different counties over the last few weeks, reaching all four finals and picking up two winning and two runner-up trophies! The most recent was the Frodsham Football Festival where 34 under 10 teams from across the Northwest were pitched against our boys.

They were unbeaten in all of their games winning all but one which was a 0-0 draw.

Even more impressive was that they went all the way through the day without conceding a goal! A fantastic performance!

Congratulations to Nathan Roberts (under 10 coach) and all the boys on their success, and good luck to them in the new season as Gresford Athletic JFC. U10’s parents

It will be relaxed, informal and most of all lots of fun! In our ‘Beer Studio Room’ you will be able to sample local and regional ales and ciders. To placate those wanting a different drink we also have a ‘Gin & Fizz Shed’!

Music-wise we are fortunate to have the services of Robert Jones, a local singer songwriter, and one half of ‘The Mockingbird’s’ duo. His latest concept ‘High Society’, which is an indie night taking Wrexham by storm. Robert has collated a set of 14 music acts over the Saturday and Sunday which showcase some great local talent. Each of them offering something different.

No festival would be complete without some fantastic BBQ food and we have a great selection for everyone, whether you are a carnivore or vegan. We will also have a limited menu of our pub classics available for those maybe wanting a fuller meal. The BBQ will run from 3 - 9pm both Saturday and Sunday.

There is a charitable element to the event too, we are partnering up with Nightingale House to raise funds for a cause that needs no introduction. We are not charging an entrance fee to the Festival, instead we are asking for a small donation to the hospice.

Overall we are hoping to put on a fantastic event that anyone in the community and further afield will find fun, relaxing and a great way to spend a Bank Holiday. See you all soon.”

Gladstone's Library - Where you Can Sleep With the Books Gladstone's Library in Hawarden, only 12 miles from Wrexham, has been recognised as the most important research library and collection in Wales after the National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth. It boasts an outstanding collection of more than 150,000 books, journals and pamphlets on a wide range of subjects.

Gladstone's Library is one of a kind a residential library and meeting place dedicated to dialogue, debate and learning for open-minded individuals and groups who are looking to explore pressing questions and to pursue study and research.

Local Birds & Wildlife

By Rev. Hugh Linn Some 50 years ago Red Kites were virtually extinct in the British Isles with only a handful of birds surviving at remote sites in mid-Wales.

At its lowest point the British Kite population amounted to a mere nine birds. Today, thanks in part to reintroductions from the Continent, there may be as many as 1,600 breeding pairs in the British Isles.

As the native Welsh population continues to spread there have been several recent sightings in our area. Single Kites have been observed soaring above Gresford, Marford Hill and Llay with another systematically quartering low over fields in Poulton. With a wing span of nearly 6 feet the Red Kite in flight is unmistakeable. The 18th century naturalist George-Louis Buffon's description is evocative - “His long narrow wings seem immoveable: it is his tail that seems to direct all his evolutions and he moves it continually.

He rises without effort, comes down as if sliding along an inclined plane. He seems rather to swim than to fly.”

Hover flies have been much in evidence of late especially around bramble patches with plenty of blossom. One of our commonest and most widespread species is the attractively named Marmalade Hoverfly (Episyrphus balteatus) which is also abundant in gardens. These little insects are nectar feeders and, as their name suggests, are perfectly adapted to hovering motionless on whirring wings in front of nectar-rich flowers.

Bramble patches also attract sunbathing butterflies. Commas have been consistently predictable on one local patch whenever the sun has been shining. Later on in the season flowering Buddleia’s are magnets for Red Admirals, Small Tortoiseshells and Peacocks.

Although insects continue to be plentiful one insectivorous bird species has become very scarce during the last decade or so and that is the Spotted Flycatcher. This summer the only record I know is of a single pair breeding in Pulford. Any other local sightings would be significant and much appreciated.

EssentialsMAG Tasty Recipe

Chocolate Fondant Cake INGREDIENTS 2 tbsp cocoa powder 120 g unsalted butter + 1 tbsp for greasing 120 g dark chocolate 2 full eggs + 2 egg yolks 120 g caster sugar 1/2 tsp salt 30 g plain flour 16 chocolate truffles (we recommend Lindor!)

Vanilla ice cream, raspberries and icing sugar for decoration

METHOD Preheat the oven to 200ยบC and grease 4 ramekins, or 4x 190ml pudding moulds.

Tip cocoa powder into the ramekins and roll them around to coat the inside with powder.

Dice the butter and chop the chocolate into small cubes. Microwave on high (800W) for 20 seconds at a time, stirring until the chocolate has melted. Crack the full eggs into a mixing bowl, adding the 2 egg yolks, sugar and salt and whisk until pale, before folding the chocolate mix into the bowl. Add the flour and fold to combine.

Pour the chocolate mix into the ramekins, filling half of the way up. Carefully push 4 truffles into the centre of each fondant until completely covered and then add an extra spoonful of the batter for extra measure.

Bake the ramekins for approx.12-14 minutes. Once baked allow the fondant to stand for a minute before removing the mould.

Serve with vanilla ice cream, a light dusting of icing sugar and a few raspberries.

Maes y Pant Latest News

The selective felling of pines at Maes y Pant has finished. The contractors have done a good job in keeping disruption and damage to a minimum, although inevitably there was some. There are three areas in which we have created open spaces, which look a little unsightly just now but that will change. We’ve planted some saplings and natural regeneration seems to be happening quite quickly elsewhere, which is part of our long term plan of changing the balance of the woods to include more broad-leafed trees. We have now completed repairs to the footpaths. Most of it has involved levelling off and adding ‘dust’. The recent rain has helped to set it in place. We’ve also given the steps a safetymake-over. We’ve cleaned them, backfilled to level them off again, treated the risers to reduce slipperiness and added galvanised steel hand rails. There is now at least one less excuse for those who’ve said they’re nervous in using the steps. Come and try them out.

Those of you who walk through the top field, where we have the apple trees, will have noticed the wildflowers. These are present thanks to the local brownies, guides and badgers groups, who seeded patches over two or three years ago and now it’s beginning to pay off. Cowslips in the spring, pink mallow and centaury and vivid purple vipers bugloss, which are all out now, have done well. Orchids such as

pyramidal and common spotted have also done well, but I haven’t seen much of the bee orchids this year. I hope to scythe the field in August, which will reduce the impact of the thistles and cow parsley seeding and taking over.

Whilst I’m talking wildlife, the bird life has been more interesting this year. Apart from the usual suspects, we’ve had a lot of warblers at the main entrance end of the site. Presumably as the saplings are growing there, it presents a more scrubby appearance which should suit them. A number of blackcaps, as well as chiffchaff, whitethroat and willow warbler – and the song thrushes singing have been a joy.

There are plenty of butterflies as well. Good to see a few ringlets at present and the beautiful orange comma butterfly. Others in the know may be aware of rarities about, as these are recorded at our neighbouring quarry site.

Local Police Advice Keeping North Wales Safe Caravan Security Caravans left on sites, parked on driveways and even static caravans can be a target for thieves. Although North Wales is one of the safest places to live, work and visit, we would like to remind caravan owners and holidaymakers of these simple steps to help reduce your chances of becoming a victim of crime: • • • • • • • • • •

Immobilise your caravan, even when you only stop briefly; Fit a tracking device so the caravan can be traced if stolen; Fit a reliable alarm and always switch it on every time leave your caravan; Lock all windows and doors every time you leave your caravan; Ensure the roof light and gas compartment is locked; Never leave personal or valuable items in your caravan; Use good quality, heavy-duty chains and hitch locks to secure your caravan; Fix lock nuts or wheel clamps to the wheels, and padlock gas cylinders to fixing clamps; Consider marking your property and keep a record of the information; All caravans manufactured in the UK since 1992 have a 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN) etched onto the vehicle chassis and windows. Mark your VIN number with a security marker inside cupboards and other places to help you identify your caravan if it’s stolen; • At home, always keep your caravan keys in a secure place out of sight; • Never leave vehicle registration documents inside the caravan. They can help a thief to sell the caravan.

Look out for each other’s caravans on site and report anything suspicious to the site manager or contact the police on 101.

Dear Vicky I hope you’re enjoying the magazine, it’s looking great and I am missing it! Seems strange emailing as a reader, but quite nice all the same.

Anyway I thought I’d share my recent experience... I noticed a guy had parked his large car not only on some of the pavement, but also in the white zig zag line zone on Chester Road, Rossett for his trip to the pharmacy. I mentioned it when he came out.

He said thanks and also mentioned that he didn’t know about the zig zag lines, no mention of his parking on the pavement. I found that hard to believe and a conversation ensued, during which he got quite angry, and his conclusion to the matter was that I was ‘pathetic’ and that ‘he knew where I lived’. Whilst most people locally know me and where I live, I will gladly be ‘pathetic ‘ every day of the week where people are being disrespectful to the local community and just suiting themselves for convenience by parking as close to the pharmacy as possible to save having to walk, and also making the crossing area more of a risk. Interestingly our elderly residents park appropriately and manage the walk to the pharmacy, and some of them struggle with this I know. The chap in question said he was also local so I’m sure he is familiar with this area of road, as too I’m sure he’s generally a lovely chap and was just having a bad day. I appreciate that parking in this area on Chester Road is difficult and that he isn’t on his own with chance parking like this, probably because people think it’s okay as they’ll only be a minute popping in and out of the pharmacy. Anyway I’m just reminding everyone to be more thoughtful and careful with their parking here, there’s normally a space alongside the park and it’s not too far a walk either.

By Jenny Dutton Trustees were saddened to learn that Barry McCloskey, local solicitor and a Trust Representative for Gresford Methodist Church had passed away. A great supporter of the Trust, Barry was well known and widely respected and he will be greatly missed by many in our community.

Jayne Mumford and Wendy Sutton coordinated an excellent team to present the 37th Gresford Craft Group Exhibition held at the Trust and All Saints' Church. The Exhibition and Church House refreshments were enjoyed by over 800 visitors, with coach trips from Liverpool, Oswestry and Newport, Shrops.

This year nearly £7,000 was raised. The challenge 'In the Air' raised £369 for Wales Air Ambulance and the Craft Group donated £750 each to Gresford & District Community Library, Clwyd branch Motor Neurone Disease Assoc. Erlas Walled Garden and North Wales Emergency Doctor Service. All Saints' Church, Nightingale House and Gresford Trust each received £1,300. The Chairman, Ian Gibson accepted the cheque on behalf of the Trust from Craft group representatives, Val Shields and Sue Hill at the July Trust Management Meeting and Trustees visited the Craft Group to thank them personally.

Gresford W.I.'s Afternoon Tea was enjoyed by all, with a vote of thanks to the committee and particularly Marian Williams and Audrey Happs. The next meeting is 7pm 6th September (first Wed).

The Trust Defibrillator (supported by funding from Marford Co-op and the British Heart Foundation) is on its way! The defibrillator will be placed on an external wall, accessible 24/7 and alarmed against misuse. Though it can be used without training, we want as many people as possible to feel confident in its use. Trust organisations have been invited to send representatives to training sessions.

Community training date information will be posted on our website and Facebook page in September.

On Sunday 20th August, the Coalfields Regeneration ‘Game On’ Home International Football Tournament will come to Gresford Trust. Activities for the under 16 yrs players will be centred at Glyndwr University over the weekend, and overseen by Racecourse Foundation coaches. Established in 2005, it is the first time the Tournament has come to North Wales. Another first is its expansion to incorporate a girl’s tournament alongside the established boy’s tournament. There will be three six-a-side pitches in play on the Gresford Football Club pitch at the Trust on the Sunday morning 9am - 12pm so come along and enjoy the competition.

Are You Drinking Enough Water?

Medically, it's generally thought that a healthy adult can go for about eight weeks without food. But without water, in perfect conditions (neither too hot nor too cold) and without exertion, a healthy human can only last for about 3 to 5 days.

We lose water naturally through sweat, urine and breathing. Water allows our organs to function properly, transports oxygen, fats and glucose to working muscles, regulates the body temperature and helps to digest food and eliminate waste. In this recent very warm weather, an adult can lose as much as 1.5l of water through sweat alone. Without being adequately hydrated, your body temperature will rise and you run the risk of suffering from heat stroke. Drinking water will cool your core temperature.

But what if you're one of those people who dislikes water?

If you do not drink sufficient water for good health and function, you could supplement your fluid intake with diluted pure fruit juice (although this can contain a lot of sugar), fruit and herb teas, and high water content fruit and vegetables such as watermelon, cucumber, courgette, tomatoes and strawberries. You might also find infusing your water with fruit and vegetables makes it more palatable and appealing.

Becoming even mildly dehydrated can create

measurable difficulties. At just 2% dehydration we may experience fatigue and poor performance, muscle cramps and circulation issues. Concentration can also be affected.

So drink before you get thirsty.

Thirst occurs only when a deficit is already present and therefore mental and physical performances are already affected. Drink regularly throughout the day and in Summer, try to aim for at least 8 glasses of water in addition to your normal diet.

Top Tips to Drink More Water • Drink a glass of water as soon as you get up in the morning.

• Drink a glass of water before each meal.

• Keep a water bottle with you all day (reusable, non plastic) on your desk, or in the car, and sip from it throughout the day. Set reminders on your phone to prompt you. You could even install a water tracking App on your phone until drinking water regularly becomes a habit.

Whilst reading the Sunday papers it struck me just how many different “vehicles” for planning short or long term savings there now are. It didn’t always look like this.

Around 20 years ago, there were PEPs and TESSAs. A TESSA was essentially a bank account, which invariably offered a higher level of interest, which was in turn free from income tax. A PEP allowed you to invest in stocks and shares, but without deduction for income tax or capital gains tax. There were annual investment limits for both, and ok, maybe they were not completely straightforward but they were two distinct products, designed to encourage savers by their tax advantages.

In 1999 PEPs and TESSAs were replaced with the ISA (Individual Savings Account) and already confusion started to creep in. After all an ISA was an ISA wasn’t it? Yes, but have you got a cash ISA or a stocks and shares ISA, and if you have one, how much can you put into the other. It was rather easy to over fund the annual limits, particularly for clients who had fully funded their cash ISA limits and were moving into equity based ISAs, which in turn prompted curt letters from HMRC. Fast forward to 2017 and we now have a standard ISA, a Junior ISA, a Help to Buy ISA and introduced in April 2017 a Lifetime ISA of which there are Stock and Shares and cash versions of each. The annual limit is currently set at £20,000 for all except the Junior ISA

at £4128 which can be made up of cash and/or stocks and shares. If you are a grandparent or parent, the Junior ISA is great for investing for children, and doesn’t use up any of your own allowance although the Lifetime ISA and the Help to Buy ISA do.

Do you then use the Lifetime ISA as a house deposit, which is the only way you can withdraw the funds without a penalty of 25% of the amount withdrawn before the age of 60 (effectively losing the government bonus) instead of Help to Buy ISA? If you are saving for retirement, do you use the new Lifetime ISA which to date is only offered by a limited number of providers, or do you use traditional pension products such as the Work Place Pension, other occupational schemes or a Personal Pension, or maybe a combination of them?

It does appear that successive government policy changes will make absolutely sure that you will need to be “on your toes” where your plan is concerned. That’s one thing that does not look set to change!

It also appears that it is going to rain for most of the weekends this summer!

News from Wrexham County Council You Won’t Believe What Some People Put in Their Green Bins Green bins are for garden waste. You fill them up with grass cuttings and so on…and then we turn it into lovely compost. Sounds simple, right? But you’d be amazed at some of the weird and random objects our recycling teams find on green bin-collection day.

Try barbecue gas bottles for starters. It probably goes without saying that metal gas containers don’t make great compost, but we’ve found them. We’ve also found plastic garden chairs. Again, not great composting material.

Other weird finds include fencing, bricks and concrete. All of these things are big no-no’s and if we spot them, we won’t empty that bin – we just can’t compost that stuff.

But the good news is…

Most Wrexham residents do a great job of filling their green bins, and last year you helped us produce 6,800 tonnes of compost (and our total recycling figure was a whopping 68% of household waste).

But we have to admit it’s easy to sometimes make a genuine mistake, so here’s a quick reminder of what you should and shouldn’t put in your green bin.

You can then progress to a Level 1 Traineeship, where you work towards qualifications in areas like retail, business and administration, customer services, ICT and childcare. When you get to this level, you work 30-40 hours a week and your allowance increases to £50.

The great thing about this option is that you learn…and earn money. And lot of people who follow this route secure an apprenticeship or employment through their work placements.

Vandalism in Maes-y-Pant As a Friend of Maes-y Pant, we thought you would want to know about the very concerning problems we have had with vandalism in Maes y Pant. Last month in July there were five fires. Trevor happened to arrive on site just after the fire brigade on one of the days, so was able to take photos, which I've attached to give you a flavour.. definitely seriously threatening. For the one in the centre of the site they had to call an all-terrain vehicle from Denbigh. The water level in the pond is even lower now! We are particularly grateful to a lady called Fay Jones, who called the fire brigade on at least one of the occasions. Of course, the police have been informed, but Trevor asks that we all keep our eyes open and dial 999 if we see anything untoward.

The other damage, distressingly, is to Gwyddion, Simon O'Rourke’s wizard carving in the arboretum, which was attacked possibly with an axe late on Tuesday or on Wednesday. There’s a photo attached. We haven’t managed to find the missing hand - if you come across it, please hang on to it and let us know.

The police have obviously been informed about this criminal damage, too. The finger of suspicion seems to be pointing at a group of youths on bikes who have been seen in the vicinity on several occasions recently. If you see anything suspicious, please dial 999, but the advice is not to approach them yourself. Mindless vandalism like this is really upsetting, especially with the amount of work that so many volunteers put in to make it an amenity that all the community can enjoy and appreciate. We know it’s a tiny minority who abuse it, so let's hope the next update can be more positive.

Crowdfunding Campaign Launched to Make ‘Katie’s Ambition’ Happen

A crowdfunding campaign to help raise over £13,000 to help send a local Gresford ballet dancer to the Northern Ballet School, has been launched. Katie Malone, who has been dancing since she was five years old, has been accepted at Northern Ballet School, Manchester to start in September 2017 on a three year course to study a national diploma in professional dance validated by Trinity College London. However her mum, Sally Malone, a single-working mum, has launched a crowdfunding campaign to help raise £13,250 to get Katie through her first year of ballet training at the school.

“I am a single working parent and have bought Katie and her sisters up on my own since they were six years old. Katie is a triplet and financially it has been hard but I have worked hard to provide for them. She is at a local school and is studying 13 GCSEs. She is a very talented young lady and I am a very proud mum. I have had to choose to raise funds for Katie in this way as I have found that many foundations, charities, companies and fund givers financially support groups rather than individuals. I work which also goes against Katie and consideration is not given to the fact that she is a triplet and that all three girls are the same age and at the same stage in life.

I need to raise £13,250 to get Katie through her first year of ballet training at Northern Ballet. I can pay for her accommodation but cannot afford the fees. I would be so grateful if anyone could donate so that Katie can go to Northern Ballet. RSPCA - How Tourists Can Help Tackle Cruelty

Travelling to different places around the globe is an enriching and fascinating experience but many tourists can find themselves taking part in animal-related activities they wouldn’t dream of doing back home. Here’s some advice to help you navigate some of the cruel entertainment practices which tourists may come across whilst travelling.

Selfies with a monkey - Photographers asking for money may walk around the streets or on the beach offering pictures with a baby chimp or monkey. They may look cute but these animals are usually taken illegally as babies from the wild.

Animal souvenirs - Many markets and stalls may sell caged birds and other small animals. It is generally illegal to import wildlife products such as ivory, tortoise shell, coral and animal skins into the UK. Cuddling big cats - Lions and tigers are wild animals and if they allow you to get close to them it will usually be because they have been sedated to make them easier to handle. This is often the case with snakes, and monkeys too, who could be left out in the sun all day without food or water.

Riding elephants - Elephant riding plays a huge part in many tourist attractions and activities in Asia but the animals can be kept in horrible conditions when they are not ferrying tourists around. Elephants are often illegally captured for sale to the tourism industry. Once babies are stolen from the wild they are beaten until they become compliant. When riding, bullhooks are often used to keep them in check which can also cause severe suffering.

Getting in the saddle - Avoid riding donkeys, horses, or camels if you suspect any form of cruelty. It’s easy to think that these animals are used to carrying heavier loads but they may be working very long hours without food or water in the heat so that their owners can make as much money from tourists as they can.

Catching waves with a dolphin - Swimming with dolphins may seem like a fantastic idea but in reality they often have restrictive space and can find swimming with people all day very stressful. Marine mammal facilities where dolphins and whales are kept in captivity often use animals taken from the wild. Captivity cannot provide for their needs and they live shortened lives.

If you see animals being treated cruelly whilst travelling abroad then speak out. You can try to contact a local animal protection organisation or shelter whilst you are there.

When you return write to the national tourism authority or embassy of that country in the UK and let them know about your concerns.

Hugh Jones Councillor for Rossett Planning Issues. The appeal against the Council refusal for houses on Gamford Lane is scheduled for August 2nd. The applicants have submitted a revised submission to deal with the site drainage issues. This involves re-instating the original surface drainage under Cottage Close and Pippin Lane. The revision was submitted after the deadline and it will be for the Inspector to decide whether to consider it. I will oppose this on the basis that objectors have not had an opportunity to consider and comment on the revised scheme. Since this appeal was submitted the Welsh Government Policy has changed to disallow late submissions. I will also inform the Inspector that if the revision is considered I will ask for a Judicial Review of the process.A revised outline scheme for housing on the site of Newhaven Garage has been submitted, In principle I support the redevelopment from garage to residential subject to a number of conditions. Newhaven Cottage, being the oldest in the Village, is retained, that the design and character of the building accords with the conservation area and is sympathetic in ridge height to the neighbouring properties and that adequate on-site parking is available.

The Green and hopefully will have a date for early September. In the meantime I continue to press the Co-op to mark the exit to their car park with the appropriate stop signs, they are slow to deliver on their promises. I am chasing Council officers over the confusing signs in the new 20mph limit on Chester Road.

Post Office. The Post Office still remain committed to providing a service in Rossett and the Cadwyn Clwyd funded evaluation of the Community Council proposals to convert the toilet block on The Green is currently being undertaken.

In the meantime following a helpful suggestion from a resident I have written to the Post Office asking if they will provide a mobile facility.

High Speed Broadband. Thank you to all who responded to my comments on High Speed Broadband, I will continue to press BT to ensure that they meet their promised dates.

Disabled Access. A number of residents have raised concerns regarding disabled access for both pedestrians and mobility scooter users. If you have a particular problem or concern please get in touch.

Home Improvements. I am pleased that the provision of new kitchens and bathrooms in our Council owned properties has now reached Rossett this will ensure that our homes accord with the Welsh Government Housing Quality Standards.

Chester Road. I am still planning to hold a public meeting to discuss the traffic issues in the heart of the Village around

Russell Gilmartin Councillor for Marford & Hoseley Hello! Thank you to those of you who have been in touch with me over the last few weeks regarding your various concerns.

I have addressed some of them below but rest assured, I am on the case with all of them and really appreciate you voicing them to me. As always, if any of you would like to discuss something with me regarding our village and community, please feel free to call or email me – I’ll always be more than happy to chat and/or meet you in person at a time that suits you.

Vicarage Lane. Having pursued a number of concerns surrounding Vicarage Lane, including blocked drains and pot holes, I’ve been informed by the Council that some of these issues are due to be inspected. I am hopeful that, once the inspection has taken place, these issues will all be rectified and I will of course be monitoring progress closely in order to try and ensure this is done as soon as possible.

I have reported and chased issues that have been raised regarding other roads too and will continue to pursue these until action is taken. I will keep you updated with any further progress.

Blocked drains. A few blocked drains in various locations have been reported to the Council; if you are aware of any please let me know so I can get them reported too. Best to try and get them sorted before our surprisingly good summer disappears!

Marford Hill. Over the past month, there have been several complaints regarding speeding on Marford Hill. I’ve been in talks about the improvement of signage on the road and am also pursuing the possibility of a speed monitor near the bend by The Trevor Pub. I’m hoping this may act as a speeding deterrent but in the meantime, please do look after one another and watch your speed! The whole of Marford Hill is a 30 miles per hour zone.

There’s also been a safety concern raised that cars are failing to stop to allow people to cross at the pedestrian crossing at the top of Marford Hill, so I am now looking into having the crossing improved to make it more visible.

I know this was mentioned in last month’s article but just a little reminder to parents dropping off and picking up their children; please be mindful of where you park and avoid spaces that block other resident’s driveways. It has been mentioned that more parking restrictions may be in place

If there is no change I am still pursuing a compulsory purchase order.

Anti-social behaviour We've recently had some disgraceful acts of anti social behaviour including burning and vandalising the tree carvings at Maes y Pant. I've met with Lisa our PCSO as well as discussing this with our Sergeant for the rural area to request more patrols.

Someone knows who's done it, please ask your children if they know anything about it and to get in touch in confidence. I will give a £100 reward for information leading to the successful prosecution of these vandals. A hundred quid in the summer holidays is much better than any loyalty to these vandals.

Great funds for library Thank you to Lord Thomas and Baroness Walmsley for their kind hospitality at the summer garden party in aid of the library and thanks to all of the volunteers that worked so hard to put on a superb event and raise a tidy sum for our library.

Planning application I'm expecting a large planning application to come forward in the village soon due to a few things I've spotted locally, if this happens I'll let residents know immediately.

Village Lottery Thank you to Mr Davies for coming forward to help, it looks like this project could be happening very soon.

Dog fouling I'm setting up a scheme called Community Dog Wardens to broaden the reach of the enforcement officers. I will be patrolling the area as well as any other trained Members of the public who wish to get involved.

Road safety A plan is being progressed to address many road safety issues in the village, particularly around the school. Thank you to Community Councillors Bailey and Lewis for agreeing to help me with this.

Gresford and District Community Library

Summer is a busy time with lots of fundraising activity and - hopefully - blue skies. The weather gods smiled on GDCL on July 8th when we held our Summer Garden Party hosted for us, as usual, by our patron, Baroness Walmsley, and Lord Thomas.

They very generously open up their beautiful home and garden to the many people who continue to support the library - now in its fourth year of operation - and we're very grateful to them!

Gratitude and thanks also go to our stalwart volunteers, to All Saints School which lent us tables and chairs and to everyone who came along to enjoy strawberries and cream, bucks fizz and the musical entertainment provided by the Jim Nicholls Band.

Thanks also to our local businesses; a £60 voucher from SPAR to spend in the shop a massive help in purchasing refreshments - and the Co-op and Tesco helped with this too. We raised £705 - fantastic!

Each year we set ourselves a fundraising goal. Last year we wanted to refurbish our Children's Library (come and have a look it's beautiful!) This year we're saving up to do something about the library loo - which is ugly and icy cold in winter - and we'd like to fit a baby-changing table in there.

Summer Raffle To this end, our Summer Raffle is ongoing we'll be drawing the winning tickets on Saturday 5th August when our KidzKlub takes place. We're grateful again to the businesses which have provided many of the prizes - a Samsung microwave from Tesco, fish and chips for two from the Yew Tree Takeaway, a bottle of wine from the newsagents and a £10 voucher to spend in Blooming Beautiful. First prize is a half-case of wine worth £60 donated by GDCL Trustees. Tickets on sale in the library - just £1 a ticket and all funds will go towards the 'library loo fund'!

This summer we'll again be running the children's Summer Reading Challenge to encourage them to carry on reading and moving forward over the holiday. Children get a certificate for taking part and, if they read six books, they get a medal. As usual, we'll be linking the Challenge into our own GDCL Book Buzz so, if they choose to carry on into the Book Buzz, the boys and girls who read the most books of all will receive a £5 book token as a reward. (Donations towards book tokens gratefully received!)
