Recently, our garden has been inundated with birds of all shapes and sizes. But would you know what to do if our feathery friends made a nest in a place that was ‘in the way’? In this edition the RSPCA explain the law to us on moving or destroying bird nests.

This month we introduce you to a new regular contributor – local veteran, Lee Eason. Lee has been suffering from PTSD and to aid his recovery he has set himself a goal of running 10 kilometres every day for a year! Over the coming months Lee will encourage us to become more active, eat well and get our running shoes on (for those who are able).

Five Ways to Mental Wellbeing

The statistics are shocking. 1 in 4 of us are likely to experience mental health problems each year. According to research, 3 in 4 Britons reported severe amount of stress and 1 in 6 have had suicidal thoughts within the last year. There are over 1 million children aged 5-15 in this country suffering from mental health issues.

Though a taboo subject till recently, it is no surprise that mental wellbeing is now on everybody’s lips. I am pleased to report that many schools and workplaces across the county have started tackling the problem; and if they haven’t yet, they definitely should.

The New Economics Foundation, sets out five actions to improve personal wellbeing.

Building these small actions into your dayto-day life can make a big difference to your “feel good” levels.

Connect. Connect with the people around you. With family, friends, colleagues and neighbours. At home, work, school or in your local community. Think of these as the cornerstones of your life and invest time in developing them. Building these connections will support and enrich you every day.

Garden. Dance. Exercising makes you feel good. Most importantly, discover a physical activity you enjoy and that suits your level of mobility and fitness.

Take notice. Be curious. Catch sight of the beautiful. Remark on the unusual. Notice the changing seasons. Savour the moment, whether you are walking to work, eating lunch or talking to friends. Be aware of the world around you and what you are feeling.

Reflecting on your experiences will help you appreciate what matters to you.

Keep learning. Try something new.

Rediscover an old interest. Sign up for that course. Take on a different responsibility at work. Fix a bike. Learn to play an instrument or how to cook your favourite food. Set a challenge you will enjoy achieving. Learning new things will make you more confident as well as being fun.

Give. Do something nice for a friend, or a stranger. Thank someone. Smile. Volunteer your time. Join a community group. Look out, as well as in. Seeing yourself, and your happiness, linked to the wider community can be incredibly rewarding and creates connections with the people around you.

Look after yourself and each other.

Be active. Go for a walk or run.

Step outside. Cycle. Play a game.

Maes y Pant Latest News

Now that it‘s springtime Maes y Pant is very busy. Every time I pop down I seem to bump into someone who says it’s their first time visit. It’s pleasing in one sense because they nearly always say how lucky we are to have such a place on our doorstep, but of course it adds to the wear and tear, so we’re keeping an eye on this. Anyway, I hope you’re still able to enjoy the facilities.

Turning to more seasonal matters, for the first time, frogs have spawned in the pond, indeed a large quantity. In previous years, we’ve taken some spawn from an area on site that dries out in late spring/ early summer but this is a promising development. There is a good population of newts around, so how well the tadpoles do will be interesting.

We have our annual coffee morning and plant sale at 10am on Saturday 18th May at Church House, The Green, Gresford.

This is very much a sociable event, so pop the date in your diary please, and it will be good to see you there. New members will be welcomed. New members can also join via our website. Click on the ‘About us’ tab and then select ‘Friends of Maes y Pant’ and our application the form is there.

Since I last updated you, we’ve added a new carving by Nathan Hughes, who is one of Simon O’Rourke’s team, near the children’s play area. We hope it reinforces the

message to people, especially the younger generation, of how important bees are to our wellbeing.

Nathan also carved a small ladybird seat which can be found inside the play area.

As if that’s not enough, Simon has now fitted a new hand to the Quarryman at the entrance. It’s good to see him complete again.

Now for a plea... if there is anyone who enjoys working with computers and enjoys working on a website then please let us know. Also, we’re conscious that MyPAG has no presence on social media, so we’re particularly keen for someone to set up and run our MyPAG Facebook (etc...) page.

Finally, we’re planning to modify the all abilities (green) route to make it easier for wheelchair users. I haven’t a date for that work yet but we’re keen to make Maes y Pant as accessible as possible to people who wish to use it.

The World’s Most Instagrammable Road Trip Western Australia is possibly one of the continent’s best kept secrets - with breath-taking views around every corner - so, when our Premier Aussie Specialist Adele was invited to experience it, she jumped at the chance.

Our journey starts with an easy flight via Dubai to Perth - the easiest and quickest entry point when visiting Australia - and, even without a stopover, I arrive feeling relatively refreshed! After a great night’s sleep the road trip begins!

First stop Rottnest Island… Rottnest is famous for its smiling Quokkas. These tame marsupials have no predators on the island and are confident and cheeky around visitors: just google Quokka Selfie and you will see how cute they are! A tour of the island by bus or bike will show you its true beauty: be sure to stop for a swim at Pinkies Bay. If you love dolphins, take a trip to Rockingham. A large pod of wild dolphins lives here and you can take a tour to swim with them in a totally wild environment.

Also worth a visit is Penguin Island just a very short ferry ride away.

From Rockingham we drive to Margaret River - around 2.5 hours away - famous for its stunning scenery and vineyards. Take a tour to sample some of the region’s fantastic wines and, of course, stunning food: try the Yarri Restaurant whose cuisine reflects the six seasons of Western Australia’s Nyungar people.

After a couple of days enjoying Margaret River, we head further south through Pemberton - a picturesque timber town with towering Karri forests, visit the historical Gloucester Tree Lookout and take time to enjoy the diverse birdlife of the area.

After an overnight stay in the Karri Valley, we take a leisurely drive through the William Bay National Park: admire the views and take some memorable shots of the Green Pools and Elephant Rock and don’t forget to put them on Instagram!

This area is also famous for its rare and spectacular wild flowers and, if you’re feeling adventurous, you can try the 1,000 kilometre bush walking trail: don’t worry, there are plenty of shelters, picnic areas and campsites along the way!

Next, we head to Albany… Albany is situated 409 km south of Perth and you can step back in time and enjoy its dramatic history, including convict jails, old taverns, whaling ships and settlers’ cottages.

Albany is also a great place to experience the migration of whales from June to early October. Several species can be seen, including Blue Whales, Humpbacks and the Southern White.

A drive through the Fitzgerald National Park takes us to Esperance - a beach and nature-lovers dream.

This area is one of the world’s best kept secrets: grab a picnic and head to Lucky Bay - Australia’s whitest beach. Enjoy the breath-taking beach drives, coastal walks and take time to visit the magnificent bays and stunning dune landscapes (and, if you’re feeling adventurous, try dune surfing!).

By EssentialsMAG gardening contributor CAROL EDWARDS April is here at last, and we can really start working in our gardens! The Winter seems to have been really long this year, although so far the promised snow hasn’t turned up thank goodness. The sunshine and showers are really good to start the plants off, and my lawn is looking decidedly shaggy, time to get the mower out I think!

Of course the weeds will grow as well, so we need to keep an eye on them, there is still a chance of a late frost so make sure you protect any vulnerable plants and emerging fruit blossom.

Any climbing or rambler roses need to be tied in now and can be fed to improve their vigour, shrubs can be fed too. Seeds such as hardy annuals, herbs and wild flowers that are suitable for sowing outdoors can be sown now.

This is a good time to sow new lawns as well or repair any bare patches, and house plants need to have their water increased. Now we have recovered from our evening with Joe Swift, wasn’t he good, I had no idea there was such a lot of do’s and don’ts to making a television program, I shall watch Gardeners World much more closely now.

I am having a few problems with our local stray cat family at the moment as they have taken to sleeping in my large flower pots on top of the plants! They are beautiful creatures at least seven in all and three of them are the same markings as our cat Pippin, I think I will have to get myself a water pistol and leap out and catch them at it, so if you hear of a crazy woman in the neighbourhood firing water at cats it will be me!

Remember to have fun in your gardens and enjoy the improving weather.

Ian Lucas MP for Wrexham It is now almost 18 years since I left my job running my own legal business and was elected as Wrexham’s Member of Parliament.

It is my duty to represent the interests of my constituents in Parliament, and both listen in Wrexham and be your voice in Westminster.

Anyone who watches the news will be familiar with MPs debating and voting in the House of Commons, but what goes on outside the main Chamber?

I thought it would be useful to explain a little more about my work as an MP, showing how I link the issues facing us all in Wrexham to my role in Westminster.

I am usually on an early train to London Euston on a Monday, preparing for the week ahead. Once in London, I have a diary packed full of various appointments through to Thursday. I know in advance what is to be debated in Parliament, though the timetable is very unpredictable at the moment, and try to make sure I am present for anything relating to Wrexham. Only recently, I raised the closure of our tax office and highlighted how uncertainty over Brexit was causing concerns for local aerospace firms. I have also spoken recently about homelessness and transport infrastructure.

There are, of course, national issues which are debated and require my attendance, Brexit being a prime example, and Prime Minister’s Questions every Wednesday (I’ve asked a few myself recently).

Then there are the parliamentary receptions, which I always try to attend if people from Wrexham are present.

I also sit on cross-party select committees which scrutinise government departments, the most high-profile being the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport committee. We recently concluded an investigation into the rise of ‘Fake News’, making recommendations to the government based on the evidence we heard.

Fridays are spent back in the constituency, with my mornings usually full of meetings or visits. I receive invites to tour local businesses, large and small. One week I might be at JCB, one of our largest employers, the next I might be dropping into a small start-up. The feedback I hear at both is equally important and informs what I say and do in Westminster.

My afternoons are full of meetings with constituents, helping them with any issues they have. Common complaints relate to benefits and housing and, again, the things I hear about on a Friday are fed back into what I do once I am back in Westminster. I work to hold the Government to account and press for changes where required.

I have met thousands of constituents in my time as MP, formally and informally, and will continue to try to do my best for Wrexham at what is a very complex and difficult time.

Away from the Chamber, my diary is full of other meetings and appointments. These can be about all manner of different subjects - too many to list here. I am Chair of the all-party North Wales/Mersey/Dee Group, a collection of MPs working together to secure the best for the cross-border regional economically.

Local Birds & Wildlife

Hugh Linn This time last year, following the blast of severe wintry weather now known as "The Beast from the East", many of our summer migrants had yet to arrive and winter visitors such as Redwings and Fieldfares were postponing their return to northern breeding grounds. This year, however, one of the warmest Springs on record, has been very different.

By mid-February Swallows and Sand Martins had already been seen in North Wales and Wirral.

On February 24th a large queen bumblebee was prospecting in my garden followed two days later by a Comma butterfly. By then our resident Long-tailed Tits were lining their almost completed nest deep in a prickly bush which also housed a pair of Blackbirds. Unlike the tits the female Blackbird has sole responsibility for nest construction while the male hangs around nearby to keep an eye on her, occasionally singing to assert territorial ownership and, as and when required, to chase off intruders.

Great Crested Grebes are back on Gresford Flash. During the winter they appeared only intermittently as the Flash was frozen over for much of the time, so they were forced to seek food elsewhere on open water. The courtship display of Great Crested Grebes is quite spectacular and takes the form of a ritualised water ballet in which the pair swim together face to face with ruffs fluffed out, calling and shaking their heads, culminating in an exchange of nest material.

For some weeks up to 15 Pied Wagtails were feeding by the lake in Gresford village with a pair of their grey cousins in residence at their site by Rossett Weir. Grey wagtails are much more colourful than their name suggests, with bright yellow breasts and long black and white constantly wagging tails.

On 4th March a Red Kite was soaring over Marford Hill which is also a favoured haunt of displaying Buzzards.

In mid-March the Dee floods attracted a number of Common Snipe as well as several hundred Common and Black-headed Gulls to the fields adjacent to the B5102 between Rossett and Holt.

EssentialsMAG Tasty Recipe

Roast Lamb with Mint & Cucumber Yoghurt FOR THE STEAK 2 lamb rump steaks – you could use a pork chop or chicken breast here (just adjust the cooking times to suit) 30g butter 1 tsp vegetable oil 1 tsp dried thyme 1 crushed garlic clove (optional) ½ tsp fine sea salt Juice of ½ lemon (optional) MINT YOGHURT SAUCE ¼ cucumber, peeled and finely diced 1 small pot full fat plain or Greek yoghurt 2 large tbsp fresh mint or ½ tbsp dried

SPRING ONION AND CRUSHED POTATO 200g small new potatoes 1 bunch spring onions (or chives) finely sliced 30g butter 70g full-fat plain or Greek yogurt FOR THE BUTTERED PEAS AND CABBAGE ½ a large Savoy cabbage or one small 150g frozen petit pois peas, defrosted 40g butter Salt and pepper

To make the lamb 1. First mix the oil with the thyme, garlic and salt and rub into the lamb steaks.

Make sure the lamb is at room temperature (leave it out of the fridge for half an hour maximum) – whilst the lamb is coming to room temperature, make all the sides and cook the lamb at the end.

2. Whilst you’re making the sides heat the oven to 180°C. Once the sides have been made, put the rump steaks in a baking dish and cook for 15 minutes, or done to your liking.

3. Alternatively, you can take a frying pan and add a drop of oil, heat to a medium to high heat and fry the steaks on each side for two minutes, turn the heat down to medium only, then add the butter basting and turn for four minutes.

4. Finish with a squeeze of lemon.

To make the potato 1. Bring the potatoes to boil in plenty of water, turn down the heat and allow to simmer for 20 minutes approx. Or until cooked.

2. Drain well and put back into the saucepan.

3. Crush with a fork and add the butter, Greek yoghurt and spring onions.

Mix well and season well. Keep warm.

To make the mint and cucumber yoghurt 1. First put the cucumber into a colander over a bowl, sprinkle with the salt and leave for the water to come out, for about 20 minutes. Allow to drain.

2. In a medium bowl add the yoghurt and all the other ingredients, mix.

To make the peas and cabbage 1. Cut the cabbage into slices, put into a saucepan of boiling water, cook for four minutes. Drain well.

2. In the same saucepan add the butter add the peas and cook for a few seconds, now add the cabbage.

3. Add salt and pepper and mix well.

Gresford Trust Newsdesk

By Jenny Dutton It is the season for holding AGM and Gresford Trust will be looking to elect new Trustees and officers; Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer. The AGM date will be announced on the website and local noticeboards.

We are always looking for fresh ideas, so if you think this is the year to try out a volunteering role and would like to join us then please get in touch.

This year Gresford Playgroup celebrates a significant anniversary. Fifty years ago, Ruth Willis approached Valerie Shields, a qualified teacher, to ask if she would be interested to start a Playgroup with her for the village preschool children and be the play leader. They first booked Allington Hall on Vicarage Lane as the venue. In 1970 a village hall was built on Trust land and Playgroup relocated. In 1998 they moved again into the current hall with increased storage and access to the outside secure play area. Over the years Gresford Playgroup has responded to changing societal demands and legislation. The current management committee have reviewed policies, updated its status with the Charity Commission and recently had a CIA inspection with very positive and complementary feedback. Playgroup will be celebrating its ongoing success and supporting the Trust in planning a joint event.

Maintenance Updates: After consultation with regular users Trustees are having the hall kitchen completely refitted during the Easter holiday, with new flooring, units and white goods. The timing should minimise disruption to hirers. Grass cutting and the annual maintenance contract for the sports pitches have been awarded. The Trustees are concerned that the upkeep and presentation of the grounds ensures that they are safe for both recreation and sport. Last year’s maintenance work had a very beneficial impact on the grounds and Trustees agreed that this should be an annual commitment to ensure ongoing improvement of the facilities.

The Right Steps to a Better You

By EssentialsMAG fitness contributor LEE EASON Lee Eason is a local veteran suffering from PTSD. He has set himself the challenge of running 10 kilometers every day for a year - a target of 3,650 kilometers in 2019!

It’s that time of the year when the weather starts to show some signs of forgiving. So what a great time to start planning some goals for the next few months.

For me, it’s been a battle with the elements from the start of 2019 since committing to running every day. So what can I suggest from what I have encountered and found important for the ease of exercising and reducing any additional risks of injury?

First of all, if you are getting outside or even to a gym make sure your footwear is correct for your activities, especially for running and walking. A gait analysis at a running shop will help you with the correct footwear choice to reduce risk of injuries like plantar fasciitis, shin splints or even a small blister can give you a problem that can stop you in your tracks.

Setting yourself a plan on a weekly basis can be a great way to keep track and not put too much pressure on yourself. If you plan, let’s say, to train three days a week then you have a good chance throughout the week to achieve your goal.

Investing in an activity tracker can not only help motivate you, but various apps and companies offer prizes for hitting your targets daily or weekly.

Listen to your body If you are new to running and want to start

getting outside, I cannot stress how important it is to start at a pace that is comfortable for you. There are great ways to start, and a very popular plan is ‘Couch to 5K’ (use a search engine NHS 5K plan).

This will give you a structured weekly plan to get you up to 5 kilometers.

What you put in is what you get back.

You can spend a lot of time exercising, training, but the most important part can let you down. It may not be that you aren’t working hard enough, it can be solely down to a lack of the right nutrition... too many calories in, to what has been burned?

At the moment my time is limited, but I have found a great way to get my five-aday fruit and vegetables via juice. I can recommend an all natural and local juice company B.fresh (www.b-fresh.co.uk).

Financial News with Hadlow Edwards Ups and Downs It’s odd how sometimes old sayings seem to come true. In the Investment world if I had a £1 (or 1 Euro perhaps?) for every time I had heard ‘its time in the markets that counts, not timing the markets’ - then I would have a large pocket full of coins by now!

If we look back over the last few years perhaps it would have been hard to predict the very big returns seen in the markets for 2016 the year of the Brexit vote. For this year in isolation the FTSE100 index (which is the measure of the largest 100 companies share values listed on the London Stock Exchange) saw a rise of over 14% and many of you will have seen good gains on your investments and pensions whether you were ‘tracking’ a market or having them actively managed.

For 2017 the same market showed a rise of 7.4%. Overall 2 strong years back to back and the better fund managers were I am sure enjoying success on behalf of their clients.

Of course good investment fund managers earn their reputation by beating the markets rising higher than a market climbing and falling less far when they are in retreat.

So - given that background who would/could have predicted the rise seen since the start of this year of over 7% in that same market at the date we are going to press? In truth nobody with any degree of certainty.

The point is - it’s about being happy with the risk approach you take with any medium/longer term investment, holding your nerve, and accepting that of course markets will fluctuate. It actually does not matter what happens next week or next month - if you only invest for the medium to long term. It’s about putting your money into the market - and leaving it there - whilst making sure you are as tax efficient as you can be.

For last year, the markets were under pressure for sure. Whilst Brexit gets the blame for a lot of things the USA/China ‘trade war’ has undoubtedly had an effect - almost wherever you chose to invest.

Whatever you may be looking to build an investment for (your own pension planning, a fund to boost your income or a legacy for the family) there are an abundance of approaches. We have committed ‘monthly investors’ happy to put the same amount away month in month out. Others will invest in their ISA or pension on the first day of the tax year - come what may.

2018 saw the same market fall in value by over 12% - and after 2 years of ‘blue sky’ the year really was about defending values (and the sizeable gains seen in the previous 2 years).

He is not paying any child maintenance and yet he thinks that he is entitled to call at any time he so chooses expecting me to allow the children to go to him and his partner.

I don’t think he has any rights to seeing his children and given that they are aged between 4 and 10, they are at a vulnerable age to be exposed to such a situation. What can I do?

ANSWER: First and foremost, the children’s’ welfare is of paramount importance. Whilst you may feel angry with him and are obviously devastated by his leaving you, you have to understand that such anger should not be portrayed through your children. Whether or not he pays maintenance is irrelevant to the children’s’ rights to see their father. You don’t say whether or not he might be paying the mortgage and household bills instead of maintenance but sometimes this often happens.

You may feel the advice that we have given is not exactly what you wanted to hear but it is important that you realise that the Courts will make every effort for a child to be able to see both parents.

We agree that it probably is too early for the children to be introduced to your husband’s partner because who knows the relationship could end in a matter of weeks and this would be very confusing for the children. We would say that the first step is for you to decide when you feel contact could take place. It may well be some hours over the course of the weekend. So maybe Saturday one week and Sunday the following week and/or maybe your husband meeting up with the children after school during the week.

If you feel that you cannot discuss the matter directly with your Husband, then I would suggest that you try mediation as an option. A Mediator will encourage both of you to attend a meeting with him/her and to try and resolve the position, rather than go through the Courts, which really should be the last resort. If such fails then you need to see your solicitor to talk you through your options.

Yellow Dog UK - Some Dogs Need Space

By JAYDE DAVEY Yellow Dog UK is an international campaign promoting the idea that ‘Some dogs need space’ when out in public. The campaign was launched in 2012 when the founders became increasingly anxious of approaching off lead dogs when out with their ‘Yellow Dogs’.

There could be numerous reasons why a dog needs space, for example: • • • • • •

They could be ill or injured They could be old They might be in season They could be in training The dog could be nervous or anxious The dog could have had previous bad experiences • It might be a new dog or rescue who’s family is getting to know them.

I don’t think that off lead dogs should be allowed to run over to on lead ones just in case, but you can highlight that your dog needs space or would rather be left alone by making them wear something yellow.

Whether it be a yellow harness, collar, lead, vest or even a bandana. The Yellow Dog UK website sells a variety of equipment for you and your dog and even gives out free ribbons that you can tie on your dog lead for people to see.

Being a dog walker, I walk a wide variety of dogs, different breeds of various sizes and there is absolutely nothing wrong with having a dog that would rather not say hello to every dog that it meets.

Different people have different personalities and so do our dogs. One might love charging about the field with all their dog friends whilst this might make another feel incredibly anxious and reactive. And one thing that an anxious dog definitely does not need is another strange dog running over and bombarding it.

I have dogs that need space for loads of different reasons. Some of them are rescues that maybe haven’t had the best start, some have been attacked by off lead dogs previously and so are understandably wary, others are actually incredibly dog friendly but have just had surgery so need to be kept on lead and having calm slow walks. Sometimes it’s not even the approaching dog that is a problem but instead the owner if the dog is nervous of new people.

So please, next time you are out with your dogs please keep in mind that “Some Dogs Need Space.”

Counselling Advice FAQ: Pet Bereavement

By EssentialsMAG mental health & well-being contributor KIM PATEL QUESTION: Barney has been with me every day for the last 16 years. He has made me laugh and gave me a reason to get up every morning. My beloved dog died over six months ago and I am devastated. My family say I shouldn’t be feeling this way as he was only a dog, and to get another dog to get over it. Is it normal to still feel sad and to miss him?

ANSWER: Barney was a huge part of your life for a very long time, and so it’s therefore not surprising that you are still struggling and missing him. The grief that we feel in death is merely a reflection of the love that we felt in life.

You may be finding his death difficult because he gave your life meaning and purpose, and you had a deep connection/relationship with him. What we feel is what we feel, and there is no right or wrong involved.

How we travel through experiences of bereavement will be different for each individual; however what we do know is that the grief and sorrow that we experience are in some way related to the depth of relationship we had in life. So for example, the death of a distant aunt that you saw maybe 12 times during her lifetime, would not have as big an impact on you as the death of an aunt that you saw every week.

So for me, there is no difference between a grief response for a human or a pet, as it’s about the quality of relationship that you have experienced together. Some individuals will find it useful to keep things in sight such as a water bowl or a lead/collar as this brings comfort. For others seeing those everyday items may just be too painful. There is no right or wrong way to experience grief, and we have moved a long way from the Victorian idea of grief having a timescale of a year and a day… It takes as long as it takes.

In order to move through grief however, counsellors and mindfulness teachers agree that we need to feel the whole myriad of emotions that come with it. This may include and is not limited to: sadness, anger, denial, guilt.

Speaking to a therapist may be useful as they can help you explore all your feelings without judgement.

The longer someone sleeps rough, the greater the risk that they will become trapped on the streets and vulnerable to becoming a victim of crime, developing drug or alcohol problems, or experiencing problems with their health.

This can include people who suffer with mental health issues or who cannot access services in the area in which they are rough sleeping. You can still tell StreetLink about these people. Their situation may mean that you do not see a change take place straight away.

How you can help StreetLink is a service that enables the public to alert local authorities in England and Wales about rough sleepers in their area. By telling StreetLink about someone who is sleeping rough, you will help to connect that person to the local services available.

What about people who are on the street but who may not be rough sleeping?

Some people who appear to be sleeping rough may be engaged in street activities, such as drinking or begging, but in fact have somewhere to stay. They may need a different type of response from local services, and this may mean that you do not see a change straight away.

Common questions Should I ask people about their situation?

There is no need to approach someone you don’t know to ask them about their situation. This is the job of local services.

All you need to do is contact StreetLink and give them some details about the person sleeping rough.

What about people I have seen sleeping rough for a long time?

Some people may have a longer history of rough sleeping, be known to local services

This doesn’t mean your alert to StreetLink is wasted: it’s always better to get in touch about someone you think may be rough sleeping, so that local services can provide support if needed.

Some of you who shop at Wrexham Country Market often refer to us as ‘the WI market’ and indeed Country Markets were originally WI Produce Markets. During the two world wars and immediately after these conflicts there was a great demand for increased food production and W.I. Update Alyn Family Doctors

BY RUSSELL GILMARTIN & ANDREW ATKINSON Thank you to everyone that attended the public meeting that the practice organised, we’re also aware of many more that couldn’t attend but still have very serious concerns.

We are keen to know your thoughts following the Doctors meeting and are very interested in what you'd like to happen next, if you were able to be there.

Have your views and opinions changed or do you still feel the same?

Personally speaking, we are very sympathetic to the situation the Doctors are in and are willing to work with them on these issues, but fundamentally our views haven’t changed that we want the practice to stay in Gresford and the service to remain here.

We really like what the Doctors have proposed, this Patient Voice Group, as in theory it should give us as a community a chance to listen to their ideas and them to ours.

We support the Doctors on this with one caveat: For this group to work, which we believe it ca,n then they should not submit their application to close Gresford to the Health Board until the group has had chance to assemble, meet and explore all options.

Failing that, we would be asking the health board to once again reject the application until this group has done all that.

If this group is to be successful we must listen to the Doctors even if we don't like it and see if what they have to say is right for our community and they must do the same for us and prove why our ideas to keep them in Gresford are not viable.

If we are all willing to work together in this way and explore every option we will surely all arrive at the best outcome regardless of whether or not its the one we initially favoured.

And we hope that during this time we can make a strong case with assistance from the health board for Gresford to remain open.

If there is an unwillingness to do this and a plan to move ahead to closure still as soon as possible then we don't see the point of the Patient Voice Group as it will exist for nothing more than mitigation purposes and to effectively solve transportation issues for a ‘fait au complet’ decision and we won't accept that.

These are our personal views, but its quite simple in summary, yes, work with the Doctors exactly as they've set out but no talk of closure until this joint community work is done.

I’m (Andrew) meeting with our MP and AM to discuss this approach with them and hopefully they will work with us to ask the practice to not submit their application and for this community work to be given a chance to take place. We believe this is the most sensible way forward and hope that they will work with us on this so that we’re all on the same page and working together for the community.

Suggestions are often raised about another practice taking over that site or asking Alyn Family Doctors to leave and having it run directly by the Health Board, probably staffed by locums. We hear this a lot and fully understand why frustrated patients may see this as a good option, but it is a risky one. There may not always be locums available to staff the practice and there could be longer delays in getting appointments. As your Councillors we’re here to represent your views, but we want everyone to fully understand the risks associated with each option, and then, if this is what you still want, we will make your views known.

This option may work if the site were vacated and another practice wished to take over but it involves identifying doctors willing and available to do this which is no easy task.

We’re in contact with the Community Health Council and the Health Board regularly on this issue but as no application has yet been submitted by the practice there isn’t a formal consultation underway to ask you to respond to so we will keep you posted.

Hugh Jones Councillor for Rossett Village Plan. The concept of having a Community Plan for our village that reflects the aspirations of residents has grown out of a group of residents who came together to oppose the planning application on the Bellis fields: We met regularly in the run up to the Planning Committee and were able to successfully persuade the Committee to reject the application. Similar work was done on the Gamford Lane site. There is however a need for some appropriate development to meet the needs of our community, my own view is that we need affordable housing as starter homes for young people and bungalows to enable families to downsize.

In addition we have needs for improved health facilities. The Wrexham Council LDP2 is very much an imposed plan on our community, one that I voted against and will oppose at the Public Hearing. Not one community response from the consultation was incorporated. It is the view of myself and others that officers totally ignored the consultation, particularly when it did not fit in with their ore-determined opinions. The Community Council have agreed to set up a sub-committee to which residents who have been actively involved will be invited to join. The aim will then be to hold a public meeting to ensure the views of all our community are incorporated into such a plan. The catalyst for this is the Well Being of Future Generations Act which seeks to ensure that communities are actively involved in designing their community.

Co-op Junction. I have met with Highways Officers to discuss the ongoing concerns around the safety at this junction. The new measures being put in place fail to address the conflicts between road users and with pedestrians. The Community Council are in support and have written to the Head of Environment pressing for urgent action.

Lighting. Lighting in Rossett is provided by both the County and Community Councils.

The easiest way to identify which is which is by the numbering system. White numbers on a blue background are County lights and black numbers on a white background are Community.

Village Festival. It is good to see a number of volunteers joining the Committee to replace the retiring members. Our thanks are due to Stuart Dean who has chaired the Festival Committee for many years and to all who work hard on our behalf to provide the village with its annual festival.

Newhaven Garage. I have asked Planning and Environmental Protection Officers to investigate the change of use from Car Retail to a Car Wash following a number of concerns raised by residents.

Image Latest News Ducks & Bees In February local beekeeper Lloyd Roberts, Community Councillor Beryl Blackmore and Lisa Jones from the Co-Op Community Team visited local primary schools and playgroups, representing IMAGE, to encourage local children to start feeding the ducks healthier food than just bread, and to explain about how they can help bees. Lloyd, dressed in his beekeeping suit, explained how important bees and other pollinators are to our environment, and Beryl involved the children in an activity where they chose ‘good’ and ‘bad’ food for ducks. Each child was given a packet of duck food and information on how to feed ducks healthy food.

In early March, we held an event Welcoming Bees and Other Pollinators into Your Garden. This was on a drop-in basis and was very well attended by children and adults alike. Gresford Scouts played a big part in helping get materials ready and assisting younger children in the house-making. As well as being able to make the bee-houses, information was available on the best plants to use in gardens. Everyone who attended took at least one bee-house home and we are looking forward to seeing pictures of the bee houses when they are occupied later in the year. RSPCA - Living With Nesting Birds

Can bird nests be moved or destroyed by building contractors or tree surgeons when ‘in the way’? Nests cannot be moved or destroyed by anyone while they are being built or are still in use – apart from exceptions to allow the control of certain birds for specific reasons under licence. Birds are at their most vulnerable when nesting – they are at risk of either being killed or disturbed so much that they abandon the nest and eggs.

Building contractors are often unaware of the legal protection nesting birds, their eggs and young have and what action they can legally take. However, reckless building work, tree-felling or hedge-cutting at the height of the nesting season can leave local authority contractors, developers or individuals facing prosecution.

In England and Wales, anyone found guilty of an offence is liable to a maximum penalty of six months’ imprisonment or a level 5 (£5,000) fine, which can be imposed in respect of each bird, nest or egg affected.
