The days are getting longer as we say goodbye to winter, but it also meant we lost an hour of sleep. In this edition, Helen Conway shares her simple top tips for getting better, and more beneficial sleep, which many of us desperately need.

I don’t know about you, but the longer, warmer days make me want to get out and about more. So, this month’s ‘Great Day Out’ looks at the popular tourist attraction called Electric Mountain, which is set against Snowdonia’s magnificent mountains in Llanberis. Here you can take an underground tour around the hydro-electric power station situated in Europe’s largest man-made cavern.

We often hear "Mum knows best" and while we don't always want to believe it, time and time again it turns out to be true.

My mum has always been a hard worker and she would frequently announce: “Nothing comes from nothing,” meaning if you want something you need to work for it. Stupidly, that is the reason I never play the lottery. On a serious note, this saying has subconsciously been my guide through life and that is probably way I am writing this at 2am in the morning.

Crosville A familiar name to those living in the area before the late nineteen eighties.

Crosville had provided our local bus and coach services for the best part of eight decades. The company name was derived from its founders, George Crosland Taylor (of Chester) and his French business associate, Georges de Ville, and was first established in 1906 with the intention of building motor cars. However, this venture failed to get off the ground and the company turned its attention to providing transport services, initially establishing services between Chester and Ellesmere Port, first introduced in February 1911. Subsequently, in the early days, services between Wrexham and Chester were shared with Wrexham and District Transport Company. The two routes between Wrexham and Chester were Rhosrobin, Llay, Burton Rossett and Pulford (by Crosville) and Gresford Marford Rossett and Pulford (Wrexham & District). Poulton Village was timetabled by Crosville over many years but often on “Saturdays only”.

Crosville saw considerable changes throughout its existence with routes extending across Cheshire, Merseyside, parts of Lancashire and North and Mid Wales. It survived four changes of ownership between 1906 and 1959, but retained a connection with the founding family and remarkably the name “Crosville” continued to appear on buses throughout that time. Even during a short period of ownership by the London Midland & Scottish Railway in 1929/30 the name “LMS (Crosville)” appeared.

Some unusual applications for Crosville buses in the past have been noted: in rural areas both single and double-deckers were fitted with GPO Letterboxes at the rear – this was a common sight in Llandudno over many years. At the commencement of WWII Crosville converted 24 single-deckers to stretcher bearer ambulance role and others were fitted out as mobile canteens although the extent of their use is not known.

Crosville operations in the North West and North Wales had ceased by late 1988, when the company was sold to ATL (Western) and the company name disappeared altogether.

However, the dormant company name was acquired by a new operator in Weston-superMare who, since 2011, has built up a network of timetabled services with a fleet of more than thirty modern buses. So the name Crosville lives on!

Over the years, I have enjoyed a few train journeys in Canada and, whilst I am not one for sitting and staring out of a train window for hours on end, train travel in Canada is different. So much of the scenery is breathtakingly majestic, which is just as well because, due to the sheer size of the country, many journeys can be up to four nights. As a result, Canadian trains are built for comfort: cosy sleeping cabins provide a romantic, if rather small, overnight retreat and the quality of food and drink on board is a match for most restaurants.

This type of journey gives you the chance to switch off from the usual pressures of life and to, quite literally, watch the world go by. Conversation with fellow travellers is easy and the atmosphere is relaxed.

So what routes are available on which trains?

The Rocky Mountaineer is considered to be the most popular tourist train as its route and schedule is specifically designed for daylight viewing and the experience is spectacular. There are three routes between the Canadian Rockies and Vancouver and each one takes two or three days, depending on the route. Breakfast and lunch is served on the train but you don’t sleep on board; instead you stay overnight in a hotel. There are two classes -

Silverleaf and Goldleaf Service. As you might expect, there is a difference in the comfort level (and price!) but both are excellent. For many this is a ‘once in a lifetime trip’ so it is important to make an informed decision so you know what to expect in each class.

Many clients ask me about “the train that goes across Canada.” This is a VIA Rail service train called The Canadian. Unlike the Rocky Mountaineer, this train travels overnight and has various class levels and sleeping accommodation, ranging from upper and lower berths with a privacy curtain to the high-end Prestige Sleeper Class with spacious cabins, private bathrooms, flat-screen TV and minibar.

In this class, all meals, bar service and snacks are included.

The four-night journey between Toronto and Vancouver can be done in one trip, or can be broken to include some of the towns along the way. There are many itineraries that can be designed around this journey. For instance, if you were to leave the train in Jasper in the Canadian Rockies, you could easily pick up a car (or a coach) from here and travel through the Columbian Icefield Parkway to Banff and then maybe take the Rocky Mountaineer from Banff to Vancouver.

If you fancy shorter trips on Via Rail, the Corridor Service between Toronto and Montreal is scenic and comfortable and a great alternative to hiring a car.

In fact, it is possible to visit Montreal, Quebec, Ottawa and Toronto on this service, so an excellent city hopping itinerary can be designed for those who prefer rails to wheels The Ocean Route operates between Montreal and Halifax is an overnight scenic journey. If you travel in the Sleeper Plus class, you will have access to the Park Car: a carriage with a 180 degree glass dome allowing all round viewing.

Once in The Maritimes - which comprises New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island the area has a lot to offer and it is very easy to get around by car.

BRHS - Burton Rossett Horticultural Society Gardening News

By EssentialsMAG gardening contributor CAROL EDWARDS As I write this the snow has finally melted and I am sure that we are all looking forward to working in our gardens at last. On a quick inspection of mine I noticed that my purple crocus are in bloom, and my small daffodils are all out as well this is guaranteed to lift my spirits.

Our evening with Ann Swithinbank went really well, and it was good to see so many of you there.

Top dress any containers with fresh compost, and remember to add to do the same to your flowerbeds. It is a good idea to add well rotted manure and a general purpose fertilizer as well. Chicken manure pellets work very well or blood fish and bone. Perennials need a mulch too this will help them to retain moisture during the dry months, if they are getting congested now is the time to lift and divide them. Any hostas should be divided before they come into leaf.

On April 21st all members are invited to a visit to Norton Priory, this will provide each member with a plant to grow on for the August show.

I have managed to buy a new container for my Tomato plants this year and I am looking forward to trying it out, on previous years I have used large earthen wear pots, these do dry out really fast so are not ideal, so I will hope that it works more efficiently.

By Rev. Hugh Linn The month of April sees a noticeable change in our bird population. By now, winter visitors such as Redwings and Fieldfares will have returned to their breeding grounds further north.

In February, before the “Beast from the East” covered the countryside with a blanket of snow, large flocks of these members of the thrush family were gathering prior to setting off on their journey to Scandinavia.

At one time, in the fields between the Grosvenor Garden Centre and Poulton's Straight Mile, there were no less than 2,000 birds. However, once the fields were completely covered in snow they postponed their long flight north and were forced to seek food in gardens and other sheltered spots.

In Gresford Fieldfares oblivious of passing vehicles were even seen grubbing in roadside gutters.

Throughout the great freeze the Long-tailed Tits I mentioned in last month's magazine continued building their nest. One day I was surprised to find four of these lovely little birds in attendance. There was no sign of territorial aggression. Presumably the additional two were members of the family group that had been present throughout the winter.

By the time this magazine appears in print Swallows should be back. As the old proverb says “One Swallow does not make a summer,” but it is certainly encouraging to see them again. Ringing returns indicate that most of our Swallows make an astonishing migratory journey having spent the winter in South Africa. It is also remarkable that research suggests most Swallows return to within five miles of where they were born, if not to the same site.

Last year my first Swallow sighting was of a single bird with Sandmartins and newly arrived Chiffchaffs at Gresford Flash on 5th April. Chiffchaffs are usually the first warblers to arrive. They are very similar to Willow Warblers but can be distinguished by very different songs.

Chiffchaffs simply repeat “chiff chaff chiff chaff...” whereas Willow Warblers produce a sweet medley of descending musical notes.

Chef Dan’s Seared Chirk Trout INGREDIENTS 4 x Trout Fillets

½ tsp Chilli Powder

Vegetable Oil

1x can Chopped Tomatoes

Salt

500ml Double Cream

Pepper

1x Lemon

1kg Potatoes

1x Shallot

2 Cloves Garlic

Tablespoon Butter

1 Finally Diced Onion

1 Pack of Tenderstem Broccoli

1 tsp Paprika

Olive Oil

METHOD For the Sea Trout 1. Rub fillets with olive oil, season with salt and pepper. Let marinate at room temperature for 30 minutes.

2. Heat heavy skillet on high. Pat dry fillets with paper towel. Add 2 pieces at a time, skin side down, Cook about 2 to 3 minutes until skin is crispy.

Flip to other side, cook another 2 to 3 minutes. Serve skin side up.

For the Bravas 3. Combine chopped potatoes, olive oil, salt in a large cold skillet. Heat on low and cook until potatoes are softened, 12 to 15 minutes. Increase heat to high and fry until golden, 5 to 6 minutes. Drain on paper towels.

4. Heat 3 tablespoons olive oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Cook and stir diced onion with 1 teaspoon of salt in the hot oil until onion has softened, 3 to 4 minutes. Add garlic, chilli, and smoked paprika; simmer for 1 to 2 minutes. Stir in tomatoes and return to a simmer.

5. Combine the Sauce and Potatoes together and serve as a bed under the trout.

For the Fish Cream Reduction 6. Sweat off 1 shallot in a pan, add butter, cream, lemon juice, salt and pepper.

Bring to boil and simmer for 2½ minutes, for that added intensity add in some fish stock to increase flavour.

7. Serve with Tenderstem Broccoli.

Local Police Advice Keeping North Wales Safe If you find a discarded needle or syringe DO NOT: • Put yourself or others at risk.

• Hide it.

• Separate the needle from the syringe.

• Put the cap back on the needle.

• Play with the needle or syringe.

• Put it in a dustbin or litter bin, down a drain or toilet.

If you feel there is immediate danger to children or other people and you are confident to do something yourself immediately then follow the advice below. Never put yourself at risk.

DO: • Find a suitable container to put it in eg, a plastic bottle, jar, tin, etc.

• Always take the container to the needle/syringe.

• Handle it carefully (ideally wearing plastic/gardening gloves) and do not touch the sharp end of the needle. You can use a long handled gripper if you have one.

• Pick the syringe up by the barrel end only and never touch the sharp end.

• Put the needle (sharp end) into the container first.

• Screw the lid/top onto the container.

• Wash your hands thoroughly afterwards.

• Take it to your local Pharmacy where you see this logo for it to be safely disposed of.

What to do in the event of a needlestick injury: • Don't panic.

• Do not suck the injury.

• Squeeze the wound and encourage it to bleed freely.

• Wash and gently flush out the wound with running water and soap if available.

• Cover with a waterproof plaster.

• Visit your GP for medical advice and any appropriate treatment.

Are You Getting a Good Night’s Sleep?

By EssentialsMAG fitness contributor HELEN CONWAY Well, spring has officially arrived. We even lost that lovely hour of sleep when the clocks went forward.

So how can you make the most of your precious sleep time?

The importance of sleep is often underestimated. Getting sufficient, and good quality sleep can help with weight management, hormone regulation, mood, reducing stress levels and inflammation, improving memory and much more.

So for better, and more beneficial sleep, try these top tips: • Ensure your bedroom is dark. Cave dark. So turn off any standby buttons, dim or turn digital alarm clocks away from view, and use black out blinds and curtains.

• Prepare to sleep. Quiet your mind from the days hustle and bustle by turning off all electrical stimulus at least 30 minutes before you intend to go to sleep. TV, smartphones, iPads - blue screen technology disrupts our brains and will disrupt sleep patterns.

• Keep your bedroom cool. Keeping a temperature of around 18 to 20°c is advised.

This will help to prevent you over heating and disturbing your rest.

• Try to create a regular sleep timetable. Go to bed at the same time and get up at the same time.

• Use simple breathing practices or meditations to help relax you into a sleep friendly state. A simple square breath can be helpful - breath in for an easy four count, pause for four, breathe out for four, pause for four. Don't struggle or force it. Keep it smooth.

By Jenny Dutton The season for Gresford Crown Greens Bowls Club opens on April 4th. Extensive work on the two greens has paid off with both greens showing improvements. The club will field three competitive teams, but newcomers and social players are always welcome. Please contact Graham Owen 01978 853247.

Gresford and Marford Tennis Club. Last year the courts were re-painted and have proved playable throughout the winter.

Coaching will start in May for all ages and there is an annual barbeque for members planned for 2nd July 2018. There is a club night each Thursday, weather permitting, with members arranging doubles, pairs and matches between themselves. Membership fees remain low, with individuals at ÂŁ38 for the year. Members can play on courts when available, or queue to play when busy (although waiting is unusual). Peak times are typically in late summer and when Wimbledon is in full swing!

Financial News with Hadlow Edwards Footing the Bill To what extent are people prepared – both emotionally and financially – to provide care for themselves or their families? More of us than ever will come to need it. Few of us have any idea how we’ll pay for it. The growing cost of long-term care – and the strain that can come with providing support to elderly family members – is fast becoming one of the biggest challenges facing society today.

Understandably, moving into a care home can be an emotionally difficult time.

Unfortunately, there is no instruction manual for how families should work together to handle care-giving and the many practical and emotional issues that go with it. Anxieties are bound to arise, along with a level of stress that you might not have expected – often made worse by financial worries.

According to research by The Centre for the Modern Family1, almost half of people avoid thinking about potential care costs, while one in four admit that they have no idea how they would cover the costs for themselves or a relative.

The research also reveals the degree to which people expect to be reliant on their family for financial support in the future. Half of UK adults say they will have to rely on a relative to help them afford care fees, which currently cost an average of £866 per week.2 Preparation pays Understandably, many of us will have misgivings about putting money aside for

elderly care, especially if we have more immediate calls on our income. However, without a robust plan in place, it could fall to our families to make very expensive decisions.

While equity release or selling a property could free up the money needed, many people will view this as a last resort.

If you end up having to pay fees yourself, known as ‘self-funding’, and your capital drops below £23,250 (capital drops below £23,250 in England and after April 2018 £40,000 in Wales) the local authority may assist with funding. However, the local authority might still take some of your income if you have less than this amount. It’s therefore important to seek expert advice so that you know the rules.

A financial adviser will also help you to avoid making some common mistakes, such as ‘deliberate deprivation’ – when you are judged to have purposefully given assets away to avoid these being included in the local authority’s financial assessment. Additionally, they will ensure you are receiving all the state benefits to which you are entitled.

The report’s findings are also a good reminder of the need for people to talk with their relatives about their plans for the years ahead.

Aspects concerning care, downsizing, Wills and lasting powers of attorney are not always easy to approach, but they are vital if future decisions are to be based on a clear understanding of the recipient’s wishes.

The sooner those conversations are had, the better.

My husband is always drinking to excess and this results in my having endured several beatings with injuries ranging from black eyes to broken bones. I’ve tried to keep things together for the children’s sake but I think they are now suffering from being subjected to so many nasty scenes. The trouble is I don’t believe in divorce. It is against my Christian upbringing and my family might disown me. What can I do?

ANSWER First of all you don’t have to divorce.

You could take proceedings under the Domestic Violence Act for an injunction to stop your husband from physically abusing you and also mental abuse can be included. You would ask the Court to make a Non-molestation Order so as to prevent this. You can also ask the Court to make an Order that your husband has to leave the property. It would alleviate your immediate problem and then you can decide what else you want to do.

Instead of divorce, you could apply for a Judicial Separation which is identical in format to divorce proceedings but the case stops at the stage of the decree nisi.

There is no decree absolute which means you can’t remarry and you can’t make any claims against your husband’s pensions if he has any. It doesn’t provide for finality but it doesn’t stop you from asking the

Court to resolve your financial issues. So this really is something your family might not object to. After all they must see how unhappy you are or have witnessed all of the bruises and breakages of bones. They must worry about you, so I think this action might be acceptable. Of course there are some faiths e.g. the Catholic Faith, whereupon you can acquire an annulment although there are many conditions to be met before the Pope agrees to such.

It’s worth consulting your Pastor or Priest to talk it over.

Above all, you have to consider what is best for your children. You don’t want them to think that their father’s behaviour is normal. What affect would such have in their own relationships? They probably feel inadequate in not being able to protect you.

So if your husband torments you again do call the Police as they are likely to remove him from your home, so allowing you time to acquire an injunction to prevent him return at all. You must protect yourself.

News from Wrexham County Council Sports Groups Should Grab Chance for Extra Cash Sports groups and clubs in Wrexham do a lot of good work, as recently shown by our Sports Awards.

While often powered by the hard work of volunteers, those clubs aren’t free to run, and often rely on funds from members and supporters to keep going.

Luckily, funding is out there to help these groups keep going, and ease up some of the pressure they might face when looking for backing.

Applications for the 2018 Community Chest funding is now open, with the first round of funding closing on April 18.

Community Chest is a Sports Wales Initiative, open to any community group or sports club with a bank or building society. The fund can help sports clubs with a bit of extra money to help them with buying equipment or covering costs, giving them the chance to focus on training or community engagement.

Groups can apply for up to £1,500 per year.

Cllr Andrew Atkinson, Lead Member for Youth Services and Anti-Poverty, with responsibility for Leisure, said: “The recent Sports Awards showed there’s a really strong community sporting element in Wrexham. The Community Chest is there to help those clubs get the extra resources they need.”

Maes y Pant Latest News

It’s official. Spring is here. We’ve passed the vernal equinox when the hours of daylight and dark are equal and we have all those hours in the garden to look forward to?! The frogs have been spawning in the gulleys and puddles at Maes y Pant. I haven’t investigated the main pond this year as yet, but last year we had both frog and toad tadpoles (see photo) and newtlets,. Even so, we still have our winter visitors with us. This has been a good year for finches. These are colourful little birds, whether green and yellow siskins, bright red chested and headed redpolls or bramblings. This last looks like an orange and black chaffinch and has been unusually widespread this year.

We’ve noticed a lot more activity with bikes on site in the past few weeks. We recognise the value of the area for all-terrain biking, so long as it is contained and does not interfere with pedestrians on footpaths. However, some of the jumps are now starting to look alarming and we will have to dismantle the more dangerous looking ones, as we have no control over who uses them. If there is any one who has experience in setting up such courses then we’d be grateful if they could get in touch with us through the www.maes-ypant.com website to help us find a solution.

We very much appreciate the support of the “Friends’ so a big thank you to them, but we would still welcome new members. You can join using the form on our website, but why not come along to the next annual meeting. We will take your views about current issues eg dogs on lead, enclosing the pond and give you an update of the last year. There will also be a speaker, David Dixon, who will share his knowledge and experience of the area when it was a working quarry, so we hope to see you there – and of course, refreshments.

How to Help Someone Who is Struggling

Use the word confidence We feel stressed when we don’t feel confident that we have the resources to cope with a particular situation, so it is most important to find out how the person feels about themselves.

Ask: “How confident are you feeling about work, school, exams, being a parent etc… at the moment?”

Don’t ask something like “why are you struggling” because this sounds negative and focuses on the consequences, rather than the cause, of the person’s feelings.

Use scaling questions Ask questions using a 1-10 scale, for example: How capable do you feel at work, school, parenting… out of 10 at the moment?

How capable out of 10 did you used to feel?

What has made it lower do you think?

These questions provide clearer insight into how a person feels, and why.

Ask what would be most helpful When we are worried about someone else we often want to:

a) Shield them by perhaps saying “I’ll sort it out, why don’t I……” b) Push them by saying “Why don’t you do this, not do that, try this...”

Instead of ‘shielding’ or ‘pushing’ we offer the best support by standing side by side and asking: “What would be most helpful?”

This is an empowering question because it gives the other person the opportunity to take ownership of their situation, the power to really think about what might make a difference, and the permission to ask for it!

Suggest ideas, but let them choose which to try If the other person isn’t sure what might be most helpful then suggest a few different ideas that could be tried. Let them choose what to try first, and be prepared to help them try other ideas, until they find the one that makes the most difference to their feelings of confidence; this can often take a little bit of time.

Wrexham Real Ale Trail Line-up Announced

The Wrexham Real Ale Trail is back for its 4th year on Saturday April 28th visiting nine excellent rural pubs dotted around the countryside without the worry of driving.

The moving trail helps people to discover rural Wrexham pubs that are off the beaten and chosen for their atmosphere, hospitality and selection of real ale.

Shelly Barratt Real Trail organiser says: "It’s a great celebration of Welsh culture you can sample over 50 real ales and a lot of these are from local microbreweries, eat locally farmed food and enjoy traditional pubs, all in one day without worrying about driving, plus there’s usually quite a few welsh songs sung on the bus to add to the experience always."

How it works Wrexham Real Ale Trail organise the transport, so there’s no need for a designated driver. Real Ale Trail shuttle buses chauffeurs you and your friends to great real ale pubs, arriving every 30 minutes at each pub between 12noon and 11pm. Giving you and your friends the freedom to start and finish anywhere on route and meet up along the way.

The pubs on the Trail are always changing and so are the real ales that are available, so there’s always something new to experience, with the Trail stopping in

Bersham and Holt for the first time with the Red Lion in Marchweil re-joins the Trail. Hugh Jones Councillor for Rossett Residents Meeting. In conjunction with Rossett Community Council have arranged a residents meeting to discuss the proposed sites for development proposed for inclusion in the Local Development Plan. It will be on Thursday 26th April at 1945 hours in the Village Hall, The proposed sites are the same as the ones previously proposed by Bellis Brothers and discussed at Pre Application stage for an application that did not at that time proceed.

Darland Lane. Whilst it is good that the more serious potholes have been filled in, I have expressed my concern at the quality of the work and the fact that the general state of the Lane surface is unacceptable.

As is Stringers Lane which must be one of the worst in the County Borough.

Potholes. The recent very cold weather has placed a massive demand on the Environment Department and has added to a generally poor state of our highways.

I regularly cycle around the village and do report potholes, however, only the more serious ones are being dealt with at the moment due to budget pressures. We see from the national press that Wrexham is not alone battling the deteriorating state of our highways and I have asked for a review of our spending priorities to see what can be done. In addition we need a greater share of Welsh Government funding to tackle this problem.

High Speed Broadband. It appears that parts of Rosemary Lane are still having difficulty getting High Speed Broadband and I am chasing BT. I am advised by BT that all of Rossett and Burton are now connected, however, the reality seems somewhat different. Please let me know if you are still unable to get High Speed Broadband and wish to have it.

Post Office. I welcome the Post Office decision to provide a temporary Post Office every Friday Morning from 10:30am to 12:30pm in the Presbyterian Church Hall, Station Road. I have received assurances that the Post Office are still actively seeking the provision of a permanent site in the village.

Ty Pawb. I was privileged to be invited to open Ty Pawb the new Arts, Cultural and Market facility in Wrexham. This exciting new project uniquely brings together markets and the visual and performing art and will appeal to a broad cross section of the community and attract significant numbers of visitors to Wrexham.

Russell Gilmartin Councillor for Marford & Hoseley Hello! I hope you all had a lovely Easter weekend and managed to find some time to unwind and indulge a little. Here’s your March update: Local Development Plan The LPD identifies sites around the County Borough that could potentially be used for development. The plan has now been published and at present, no land within our village has been identified as a possible development site. If there is any change with this, I’ll be sure to keep you informed.

Politics and a pint This month’s politics and a pint will be on 26th April from 7-8pm in the Red Lion and then 8-9pm at the Griffin. If there are any local issues you want to discuss, please call in for a chat!

Litter pick Unfortunately, Keep Wales Tidy haven’t yet confirmed a date with me for our community litter pick. I will keep trying, in the hope of securing one soon that will allow time for plenty of notice.

Community Speed Watch Volunteers have now been trained and certain locations around the village have been identified as problem areas. We will soon be patrolling these target areas and monitoring speed limits. If you feel there is another location within the area that needs monitoring or if you would like to get involved, please contact me.

Members’ allowance In the interest of transparency, I feel that I need to raise this issue. Before being elected, I stated that I would refuse the impending pay rise due last May and that I would pay for my own iPad; this still stands.

Unfortunately, my email sent in May requesting to forgo the pay-rise went un-noticed and the pay was included in last year’s allowance. I have requested for it to be deducted, in full, from next month’s allowance and that the pay rise starting from this May is deducted too.

Red Lion Last month saw the departure of Graham and Stacey, who have been Managers of the Red Lion for the last two years. I know I can speak on behalf of many community members when I say they will be missed and we wish them all the very best in the future. Be sure to head over for a drink or two to welcome our new Red Lion Manager, David.

Andrew Atkinson Councillor for Gresford LDP-Housing/Planning. The Deposit Local Development Plan went before Wrexham Council's Executive Board recently and if approved by full council it will soon start the process of public consultation.

Many of you may be concerned about where potential housing sites have been identified in the plan.

There are no sites identified for Gresford, nor Marford. This does not mean that there will not be any planning applications if this is approved, there almost certainly will be, but there are no identified parcels of building land in the village as part of this plan.

We also have a proposed designated 'Green Wedge' around part of the village designed to protect our green fields.

There have been many concerns in the past about how large scale developments would negatively impact on our infrastructure, even without proposed large scale developments for the village there is one very large and one reasonably sized development (with existing planning permission) in neighbouring Llay which would impact on schools etc in Gresford.

These details have already been taken into account when their planning was passed but I mention it to highlight that there are of course still impacts in the area.

I have no reason to doubt this information at this time and hope that residents don't panic. Gritting Thanks. I've been asked by a resident to thank the gritting teams for their hard work in the recent bad weather.

I am very grateful to them as they responded to my requests to grit all areas that residents requested of me including some side streets and cul-de-sacs that were icy to get in and out of. I've also been asked to thank the paper boys and girls who kept going everyday through the snow.

Thank You. Sadly I lost my dad this month, but I want to thank everyone that knew for their kind words and support. We've got a fantastic community and this really highlighted that to me again.

A typical workshop would include: • Drama games to develop concentration e.g. Keeper of the Keys. Who can sneak up and get the keys without being heard?

• Fun vocal exercises to develop diction and projection.

• Team challenges e.g. how can a team of five players cross the space on one sheet of newspaper?

• Character work, stagecraft and performance skills are developed.

• Creative games like Musical Hats, similar to musical chairs with the addition of a different hat under each chair e.g. a top hat, a chef’s hat or a sparkly bowler hat.

When the music stops, the players sit down, find their hat and create a character using movement and voice.

• Working in small groups the children create a play using three props e.g. a key, a newspaper and a sparkly bowler hat.

At the end of the workshop there is time to share your play with others and hear their positive feedback and applause!

Each term we will create and rehearse new plays to perform in a variety of settings for families and the local community.

New Community Agent for Rossett Rossett Community Council is pleased to announce we have a new Community Agent for the village. Community Agents are an innovative response to a recognised need that many people living in our communities are unable to connect with key services that help and maintain well-being and support their quality of life.

Community Agents work with the over 50s in Wrexham, providing easy access to a wide range of information and bridging the gap between the local community and the statutory or voluntary organisations and are able to offer help or support.

The aim is to help older people feel more independent, secure, and cared for, and to have a better quality of life. Your circumstances may have changed, you might find it more difficult to get out and about, you might be a carer, or friends may have moved away. The Community Agent can help connect you to activities and social groups, as well as advise you of services and help. Or you may know a friend or neighbour who could benefit from the service.

Community Agents respond to the needs of their local community, and in Rossett we believe in the whole village approach. Feeling isolated can be a common problem in our modern society, not just for older people. This year in Rossett we will be promoting community and finding ways that everyone can feel part of the village, with new events and initiatives.

We’d also love to hear your ideas on how to promote community life across the generations in Rossett, and we’ll be looking for local volunteers to help out with one off or regular events, so do get in touch if you’d like to be involved in any way.

Our Community Agent is Ali Pickard who comes with a wealth of experience in community arts and community building both in the UK and South America. She believes it’s never too late to learn something new, make a new friend, or share skills.

RSPCA Fox Cub Found Alone?

From April to May it’s common to see month-old cubs developing survival skills above ground during the day. Parents or relatives are usually nearby, watching. Or you may come across cubs waiting for their mother, as vixens move their litter one by one if they feel the den has been disturbed.

What to do if you see fox cub In most cases, it's best to leave them alone, but sometimes it may be necessary to intervene. Only touch the fox cub if necessary and, if you need to, do so as little as possible to keep them wild.

If the cub is in immediate danger or the eyes are closed, move it to a sheltered spot nearby and, if you like, provide some dog food and water. Check back after 24 hours, by this time the cub will usually have been collected by its parents.

If you find a fox cub on its own with its eyes open and it looks healthy, monitor from a distance for 24 hours (at least overnight).

Feeding a fox cub If the cub is still there after 24 hours, leave food and water nearby and monitor to see if it's eating and drinking normally. Foxes have no specialised food requirements, but if you have some dog food handy, this is suitable for foxes to eat. It’s better for 'orphaned' cubs to be left in the wild and given supplementary food than to be brought into captivity. So if cubs are healthy and feeding normally, then provide food until July.

Foxes in captivity Fox cubs should only be taken into captivity as a last resort. Please don’t try to rear a cub yourself – they need expert care and foxes used to humans do not survive well in the wild.

Accidentally disturbed a fox litter?

If you disturb a fox litter causing the mother to run away, monitor from a distance. Their mother should return when she feels safe and move her cubs.
