Telephone 01244 571602 email jill@essentialsmag.co.uk I hope you are all well and looking forward to Easter. Did somebody mention chocolate! Anyway it's nice to see the daffodils in full swing and Spring weather on its way.

I was reminded recently that it was nesting time for many birds too. I was working away at home and kept hearing a loud tapping noise in the background. After trying to ignore it for ages Victoria Lee - Designer I went to investigate, as it was really annoying me by this time. To my surprise a blackbird was perched on the door handle to the outside door and seemed to be pecking at the glass and flying at the window. He would fly off when he saw me but come back moments later and start again. This continued for some time. At first I thought he was trying to attack my cat who was on the other side of the window and quite bemused by the whole thing. I popped some bread outside for him and hoped he would eat and settle down. But no, he was on a mission to peck his way through the glass into my bedroom or so it seemed.

Moments later I was chatting to Victoria who works with me on the magazine, doing the design work, and she educated me. She said it was probably a male bird, having found a mate and getting ready to nest, and had caught his reflection in the glass and was attacking what he thought was another male bird, most probably feeling threatened.

So I opened the doors and closed the curtains to get rid of the reflection for poor old stressed Mr Blackbird and that seemed to do the trick. So hopefully he can now nest in peace!

Wishing you a lovely month of April, some warmer weather and lots of chocolate for Easter and some nice bank holidays off too.

A Tribute to

Nick Churton I was sad to hear the news of Nick Churton's recent passing, although I feel we really lost him when Churtons Restaurant, which was his pride and joy, on Chester Road, Rossett closed in 2010, on the site of what is now Machine House.

But let's remember him at his best perched at the end of the bar in Churtons from morning til night with his dry sense of humour, mischievous glint in his eyes, the crossword or a suduko close by, possibly the racing post and a glass of red wine too!

The Churton family had the foresight and vision to build a fantastic restaurant venue and experience in the early 80's. Quite revolutionary and definitely ahead of the game it would not be unusual for queuing, to wait for a table in both the Tarporley and Rossett restaurants. Nick was renown across Wrexham and Chester and the restaurant was shaped by his personality and its quirky interior design, lots of wood, a galleried upstairs seating area and a comfortable and relaxing atmosphere. It was the place to go to for many years, although it was nearly 30 years in total that the restaurant was in business. Menus were hand written on a giant chalk board, food cooked fresh to order and Nick's extensive wine knowledge would find the perfect compliment to a meal. And the Churtons frites were to die for.

He would entertain the diners with his famous rendition of a poem at the end of a meal, which you never tired of. I remember it as 'the rosy cheeked girls' by Mike Harding. In fact often people requested an encore. He was very sociable and he would interact, whether you liked it or not, and involve himself in your night out. Those that knew him will remember his fantastic speaking voice. I don't think anyone was more at home in their work than Nick was at Churtons Restaurant. It would not be unusual for him to fall asleep there and wake up still at the restaurant in the morning.

Diners travelled from miles around to have the Churton experience and Nick was a legend by reputation alone. We all know he was no angel, and a stubborn man, but he was also kind and funny. He somehow had a magical charm and you couldn't help but like him. I had the pleasure of working for the Churton family for many years and I loved it. In particular I will always remember my fond memories of Nick Churton. A big hug and my thoughts are with the Churtons at this time.

28 Years Later...

Launched in 1989, Premier Windows and Conservatories, Oswestry is this month celebrating its 28-year anniversary. The family-run company’s journey, spanning almost three decades, has helped it to build a first-class reputation locally for quality workmanship, attention to detail and excellent after-sales service. March 2017 marks 28 years since duo Paul and Caroline Chenery, featuring a perm and other questionable 80’s attire, embarked upon the new adventure of opening a local glazing installation company.

With a humble beginning the pair originally started out operating from home, quickly expanding to open their first showroom at 75 Beatrice Street, Oswestry in 1990. It was a modest team, with Caroline taking the role of Saleswoman and Administration and Paul Surveying and fitting.

By the year 2000, Premier Windows and Conservatories had grown vastly, prompting the move to a much larger showroom in Smithfield, and were employing an expanding team of eight fitters. Apples don’t usually fall far from the tree, and in 2003 the couple’s eldest son Ben

became Premier’s General manager, having worked his way up from Fitter. Ben’s promotion was then swiftly followed by the appointment of Andrew Turner, the company’s very much valued Administrator.

2008 market two more huge milestones for the company, seeing both the opening of its current showroom in Moreton Business park, Gledrid, and in taking the exciting step to become a member of the UK-wide Conservatory Outlet Network. Enjoying further growth since then, the company now offers a range of some of the most innovated products in the industry, including triple glazing and energy rated windows, bi-folding, French and stable doors, as well as modern conservatories and Orangeries.

The Maes y Pant Group

Thank you everyone for your patience whilst we were felling trees in Maes y Pant. We know it has been inconvenient but it is important that the Corsican pines planted 30 years ago are thinned out. The remaining trees will grow stronger and healthier as a result. When we look at trees rising high above us, we see strength and resilience and long life, at least I do, but nothing could be further from the truth. Pine trees are suffering from red needle disease, which considerably weakens them. Ash trees are suffering from a disease called chalara dieback. The disease is over most of the country, although most prolific in the east, but is now in Denbighshire. Japanese larch is also suffering decimation in South Wales from disease (phytophthora) but that has arrived locally as well.

I was in Clocaenog Forest recently, trying to sight goshawks and there were warnings there that their trees were suffering from the disease. Those three are the commonest trees in Maes y Pant. Anyway, we’re doing our best to manage the woods to current good practice. On top of this, when you remove trees, the remaining ones can become more exposed to the weather and of course we were halfway through the felling when along came Doris - Storm Doris that is - and knocked a few more over. That reminds me, please don’t go into the woods in very high winds. The risks are low but no second chances if a tree blows over. We routinely risk assess

the trees in the vicinity of the marked footpaths for obvious weaknesses.

All this doom and gloom. Sorry! There is very good news though. We’ve made money selling the timber, which will allow us to tidy up and look at new projects. The trees, I’m told by Gordon Adams, were originally planted for pit props. Well, we know what happened there! I don’t know what all our trees will be used for. They were cut to different lengths. The ones with kinks went for woodchip but most were more valuable than that and have been sold as fence posts, rails etc...

The money you helped us win from the Tesco Bags of Help Fund has been put to good use to create a Woodland Play Area. I did put up a notice to say it wasn’t yet open but it didn’t last long. The one obvious hazard that remains is a very large stone which we haven’t as yet been able to move. With the remaining money, we’ve also ordered a set of monkey bars for the Woodland Gym to be delivered this month.

Recovery of Stolen Chainsaws An appeal has been circulated online after thieves broke into a property and stole a number of chainsaws and equipment from a local sculptor.

Simon James O’Rourke, a well-known Rossett based tree carver posted the appeal online following a break-in at his studio. Writing on Facebook Simon said: “I’ve been broken into during the night, all of my chainsaws have been stolen. That’s my livelihood.” Details of the items stolen are:

Christ Text Church, Rossett This year marks the 125th Anniversary of the consecration of Christ Church, Rossett. A special celebration weekend is being planned over the 28th-29th October with displays of photographs, artefacts and historical memories relating to the village and especially the Church over the past 125 years. Some of our plans for the weekend include viewing of the church registers, tours of the church including the tower and bellringing, school displays, church quiz, childrenâ€™s treasure hunt, refreshments and a Victorian Evensong to close the weekend. In addition, on Tuesday 31st October (the actual anniversary of consecration) the Bishop of St. Asaph will preside and preach at a Celebration Eucharist.

During this special year we also are working towards the possibility of providing exterior lighting of the Church Tower and interior refurbishment of the Church Room, both of which we feel will benefit the community life of the village. “I think a lottery for the village would be a great way to support local organisations, community groups and projects that require small amounts of funding. The police have confirmed to me that they will prosecute anyone who parks on the road outside the Co-op where there is a double white line in the centre of the road. I have asked Highways to erect the appropriate speed limit signs on the approach to Marford Hill on Sunnyridge Avenue and on Wynnstay Lane approaching the school.

As you may know, I will not be your representative on Wrexham Council after the election. Thank you to everyone who has helped me over the last 26 years. I have appreciated the understanding and support you have given me. I will continue to represent your interests on Gresford Community Council (subject to reelection), as a Rofft School Governor, a director and friend of Maes y Pant and as Chair of the Friends of Alyn Family Doctors. Although I am much better now, I do not think that I can expend as much energy or put in as much time as is required by a county borough councillor. Expressing one’s opinion about what is best for your constituents and for Wrexham is important. This is useless, however, unless it is backed up by local knowledge and listening to the views of a variety of local people.

I am pleased that the Head of Department responsible for highways has been allowed to issue a protocol for determining the order in which roads are repaired or resurfaced. It is now more likely that professionally assessed need will determine priorities rather than pressure from “he who shouts loudest”.

We must, of course, continue to alert the Council (via its website) of any problems in our streets. It is to be hoped that we will also be kept informed of the outcome of the issues we raise.

A lot has been said about erecting dog bins. Unfortunately, selfish people who do not pick up the mess their dog leaves are unlikely to use a dog bin.

Local Birds & Wildlife By the time this month's edition of the Essentials Mag appears our wildlife population will be augmented by migrants that have spent the cold winter months elsewhere. Amongst the most obvious will be distinctive birds like Swallows. Either twittering from telephone wires or in flight hawking for insects they are hard to miss. Other migratory birds like Nightingales are better known for their songs. We are rather too far north to expect local Nightingales although they have occasionally been reported locally in the past. Nightingales may be in a class of their own because not only do they sing very loudly but also at night. Other migrant diurnal singers are well worth hearing. Blackcaps and Garden Warblers are beautiful songsters while Sedge and Reed Warblers are accomplished mimics which incorporate not only the utterances of other birds in their repertoires but also a mixture of any sounds that take their fancy. Thanks to bird ringing and satellite tracking ornithologists are unravelling many of the mysteries of bird migration. Whereas our ancestors used to think Swallows spent the winter hibernating in mud at the bottom of ponds we now know that the majority of our breeding Swallows winter in South Africa and that Arctic Terns migrate to and from the Antarctic. Surprisingly whereas it was once supposed that the Robin (the UK's favourite bird) simply stayed put throughout the year we now know that

many of the Robins seen here in winter are visitors from the Continent. One Robin caught in the Sandwich Bay Observatory was found to have been fitted with an identification ring 1,528 miles away in Russia. Birds are not our only migrants. Although most British butterflies are resident and hibernate in winter one of the species we can expect to see in our gardens has been shown to be a long distance migrant. The beautiful Painted Lady is a common African species but many individuals migrate each Spring from Morocco to breed in Europe. It is one of nature's miracles that such a delicate frail- looking creature should be capable of such a long and hazardous flight.

School Absence Parents who take their children out during school time are being targeted by police and social workers for potentially encouraging absence during the school day.

North Wales Police and Education Social Workers will be on the lookout for anyone who looks as if they should be in school and will be asking why the child is absent from school? They will also be on the lookout for unaccompanied young people of statutory school age in the town centre. Parents of truants can face a maximum fine of up to £2,500 or a term of imprisonment. A council spokesperson said:

"Taking children out of school is encouraging truancy and parents and carers should be discouraged from doing so. I hope many parents will think twice before doing it and make arrangements to either take advantage of the Easter holidays or the weekends.”

The Wrexham Community Education Patrol is a joint initiative run by North Wales Police and the Wrexham County Borough Council Education Social Work Team. It was originally developed in 1995 and updated in 2016 following concerns from traders and other agencies within the town centre about the number of children of school age being absent from school. It has been cited by the Welsh Government as an example of good practice, with other authorities visiting Wrexham for advice on setting up their own schemes. The Community Education Patrols are an integral part of the Local Authority’s commitment to improving school attendance and achievement. Lighting in the Village is a mixture of Wrexham CBC and Rossett Community Council. In recent weeks a number of Wrexham CBC lights have been upgraded to the latest low energy units. As a result I have received a number of complaints about the obtrusive nature of some of the lights to residential properties. I am currently exploring a number of solutions with our Highways Department including the fitting of diffusers, lower intensity or softer tones. Speeding

This continues to be a significant issue of concern for many residents and I share the concerns expressed, particularly in Harwoods Lane and Burton Road and I will continue to work to find solutions. The limited number of police speed checks appears to have had little impact and a number of the proposals I have made to Highways have been rejected, often for legal reasons. I will continue to work with The Community Council to explore solutions. A number of our roads have narrow or no footpaths and vehicles travelling too fast for the road pose a threat particularly to children and pet animals. My own observation of the activation of the 30mph warning on Burton Road is that it is often local residents that trigger it.

Darland Lane

I have held a meeting with our Highways, Flood Officers and owners and representatives of the former Golf Course to discuss a resolution to the drainage problems in this area. Unfortunately any progress is hampered by the owners desire to build on part of the land.

Public Meeting

The public meeting on planning issues was attended by over 150 people and was mainly focussed around the proposals by Bellis Brothers for development on land between Harwoods Lane and Holt Road. We were provided with an excellent presentation around technical objections to development provided by one of our very knowledgeable local residents. The need for some affordable housing in the Village was highlighted by a number of contributors and I am fully supportive of this need being met. I am not in favour of wholesale destruction to our Green Barrier and the narrowing of the gap between Pulford and Rossett.

Network Rail

The line between Chester and Rossett is being fully commissioned and hopefully from April 4th the works in the Village will cease, albeit nearly 2 years behind schedule. I am pressing Network Rail on the restoration of the land at Station Road to its former rural state and asking that they donate part of it to the community.

WE LISTENED Through community engagement, North Wales Police have received reports of inconsiderate Parking of vehicles. Pavement parked vehicles are a potentially dangerous street obstruction which can force pedestrians to walk along the road to bypass those vehicles. This is especially problematic for pedestrians who are blind or visually impaired and may not see oncoming traffic; as well as wheelchair users, people with pushchairs and older people. Reports include vehicles parked across drop kerbs, too close to other street furniture, parked half on pavement and roads and in some cases vehicles parked fully on pavements.

A YouGov survey for Guide Dogs found 54% of drivers admit to parking on the pavement. It is also expensive - local authorities paid over £1bn on repairing kerbs, pavements and walkways between 2006 and 2010. £106 million was paid in compensation claims to people tripping and falling on broken pavements during the same five year period. A YouGov survey from January 2013, showed over half of motorists had considered the problems pavement parking would cause to pedestrians, but had chosen to do so regardless. It is clear change needs to happen.

The vast majority of motorists park in a considerate manner and only park on pavements when there may be a valid reason, for example emergencies or loading; however, there is a minority of motorists who appear to abandon their vehicles without any consideration for pedestrians. In some cases these instances have led to hate crimes being committed. If you are being targeted or know of someone who is a victim of hate crime contact us on 101 or in an emerency call 999.

Newsdesk by Jen Dutton Representatives of Gresford Cricket Club and the Trust recently met with Ms. Sue Wells, the Regional Development Officer for cricket in North & Mid Wales, to look at Trust facilities and finalize arrangements for the coming season. G.C.C. is to trial a new initiative, sponsored by the ECB (England and Wales Cricket Board), with a programme specifically designed to introduce 5-8 year-old boys and girls to cricket, known as Allstars Cricket. Sessions will take place at the Memorial Hall and cricket ground. Registration is via the ECB website; follow the link to Allstars cricket, then Gresford C.C. Primary schools are also involved in the programme launch, with goody bags for those signing up. With the Women’s World Cup being held in England this year, GCC see an opportunity to publicize the fact that girls of all ages are welcome. There are currently a number who play at youth level, some of whom have gone on to represent both NE Wales and Cheshire. This year they are looking to develop cricket provision for ladies in addition to the end of season charity match. Ladies’ practice sessions can be arranged for all age groups as well as some school-based girl only sessions. Females from 5 to 95 can play cricket – have fun and keep fit! The 2017 cricket season starts in late April, with two senior sides in the N. Wales League, a friendly Sunday team and mid-week league team. There are also U9 and U19 teams. Currently, indoor net practices are held at Darland and Ruabon Schools but outside net sessions commence as soon as weather allows. Andrew Bailey And it is a Goodbye From Me!

Sadly, this is my last Essentials Mag column as your County Councillor as I have decided now is the time to stand down.

If told when I defeated Ken Edwards (A gentleman Tory) in 1993 that the community would support me in 5 out of 6 elections lasting for 20 out of the past 24 years I would have taken that. As to my successor whilst my voting intentions are clear the choice is up to you. Can I say that the best Council Leader I worked with was Dennis Parry from Clwyd and there have been ups and downs since before reaching the bottom. I hope you will allow me some retrospection.

Gresford - The Community

Gresford is great place to represent and is well capable of fighting for the services it values and I believe supports those who similarly value our community. Close OUR library - NO WAY, a Community forestweâ€™ll take that on and the daddy (or Mummy) of them all -the Gresford Trust and all the activities in and around the Memorial Hall. This ensures a great volunteer network and my role was to helping issues, signposting grants and getting stuck in. I hope to be involved with such work as long as I can be useful.

School Governorships

It was a pleasure to serve as LEA governor since 1993 for the schools who educated my children. All Saints Gresford and Darland High School have had their challenges in that time but now stand among the best in the council. Whilst reinstated for another term in 2016 it is only fair for my successor to nominate a replacement.

Local Issues...! Thank you Jill for highlighting the current issues that some of us recognise but many chose to ignore, the parking on pavements and dog fouling caused by selfish people who have no concern about the effect they have on other people to name just two. I notice that certain individuals are using your magazine to further their position in the forthcoming elections in May, they make many promises but fail to state how they will change the policy of WMCC who have wasted over £2.500.000 of public money and made £125.800 cuts to our public services. These are the same councillors who granted permission for a car park in Maes-y-Pant against the wishes of local residents, there is now an ongoing problem with parking on Pant Lane opposite a road junction. As a consequence of advertising Maes-y-Pant on a website people come from far and wide to create the largest dog toilet in the area, but in view of the fact that a politician in the eighties stated that "there is no such thing as society" it is no surprise that we find ourselves facing so many of the problems you have outlined in the 21st century. Swimming Club Grant The Balfour Trust has given rossett swimming club a grant of £1,000. To provide funding for ASA swimming teacher training to youngsters. We currently have three volunteers. David Morris, Simon Morris and Katie Mcgrane. Simon is in the picture below receiving cheque for £425 which covers his level 1 teaching assistant qualification which he completed in March. Sponsors Wanted Council appeals for sponsors for to help improve look of area’s roundabouts

Businesses in Wrexham will have the chance to promote themselves via Wrexham County Borough Council’s roundabout sponsorship scheme.

The scheme started in 2007, and since then has gone from strength to strength, improving the environment for residents and visitors. Recent work under the scheme saw bee-friendly wildflowers planted on the Croesnewydd Road. Companies interested in promoting themselves via the sponsorship scheme have a number of sites to choose from. Businesses which sponsor a roundabout will have their company name, logo and website highlighted on the roundabout they sponsor – along with one of their particular services or products. Funds raised will go towards maintenance and development of the roundabouts and other planting throughout the County Borough. Councillor David A. Bithell, Lead Member for Environment and Transport, said:

“The Roundabout Sponsorship scheme has proven a success in the past 10 years, giving businesses the chance to promote themselves whilst helping us to maintain some of the most visible parts of our roadways.

“I encourage any businesses interested to contact our Environment and Planning department.”
