editor’s LETTER After explaining the story behind the carved wooden bell sculpture at the entrance to Clappers lane off the main road last month, it’s safe to have it on the front cover now, and hopefully no one will be asking me what it is. Thank you to local resident and professional photographer Victoria Lee for the photo, it looks great. Thank you also to everyone who expressed an interest in a community purchase of the field on the corner of Alyn Drive and Harwoods Lane in Rossett. Just a handful trickled in at first, but I received approximately ten expressions of interest in total over the last few weeks. Unfortunately, as I’m sure most of you are aware a ‘sold’ sign went up on the field recently, so that’s scuppered that plan. I have no idea who has bought it, let’s hope it is a mysterious local who wants to safeguard the natural beauty in our area. However, I’m sure all will be revealed over the coming weeks. Lots of houses seem to be springing up locally too; we have planning applications being made for residential housing on the old ATS site, Marford, and the Golden Grove pub, Burton. Houses are already underway I think in Burton on the old Rosemary Nurseries site, and someone mentioned that approx 1700 houses are going to be built at some point in the near future in the Pulford area. I’m not sure how accurate this is but that will quadruple the size of Pulford in terms of houses by my calculations. And whilst houses are springing up at the rear of the Nags Head, Lavister, I am pleased to say that the Nags

They will be opening soon and have plans to make it a more modern and contemporary establishment and more ‘foodie-orientated’ for local families to enjoy themselves. I wish them all the best and will watch this space! The Gresford Post Office has now moved to the Spar, and Sarah and Barry have requested that I remind you all that this move has happened, as people are still trying to get into the old building. I’m not surprised as it’s difficult to change the habits of a lifetime overnight. However, Serendipity the gift shop, will remain in the old Post Office premises, and it’s business as usual there. Oh and the Plough in Gresford will be open again by the time you are reading this as Martin and the team from the Red Lion take it over. It’s all go! And Spring is on its way too!

Rossett’s own Danny Cross selected for Six Nations Under 20 team Upper Sixth Rugby star Danny Cross has scored a stunning achievement by being named as one of the 32-man squad for the forthcoming Under 20 Six Nations tournament announced last month by the Welsh Rugby Union. Following in the footsteps of Harri Evans, Afon Bagshaw, Olly Cracknell and Shaun O’Rourke, the Wrexham player has earned a place in the national age-grade side for the Under 20 Six Nations after impressing for RGC at Championship level. National Academy coaching manager Allan Lewis said: “We have a young and exciting group of boys with some experienced players from last season. “England will be a huge challenge, as double world champions, but one that we will relish and embrace.” This is a massive step forward in the rugby career of the young Rossett resident as he joins players such as Rory Thornton, the Ospreys lock. Danny, who is a member of the successful WRU Rugby Academy, was among the 22 players who took on England at Parc Eirias on Saturday 7th February. The Luke Campbell Challenge 2015 During the week 8th - 15th August this year, the very first Luke Campbell Challenge will take place. The challenge is to trek around the 125-mile coastal path of Anglesey in seven days, all in aid of Claire House Hospice. Ian Campbell, a local resident of Gresford, and his brother Neil are the founders of the challenge and will act as guides for the full week, making sure all participants complete this rigorous challenge. Ian and Neil came up with the idea for the annual challenge in honour of their nephew Luke. Luke was born in 2011 with a heart condition. He had his first operation at just six weeks old. Since then, Luke has had a number of major operations, battling back from each and every one. Early in 2014, Luke and his family were given the

devastating news that nothing else could be done further for Luke. Since then, Claire House have been heavily involved in Luke’s life, offering counselling for Luke’s family and days out for Luke. They have created many memories that will live on with Luke’s family. Luke has shown great strength over the last couple of years and Ian and Neil wanted to create a challenge to raise as much money as possible for Claire House in Luke’s name. Wrexham nightclub to host Street Pastors gathering A Wrexham nightclub will rock to the sound of Christian worship and a live band to welcome the founder and national director of the Street Pastors initiative. More than 150 churchgoers - many of them Street Pastors - are expected at the 7.30pm event on Saturday 14 March at Liquid in Brook Street to hear Rev Les Isaac OBE. It is part of a weekend of activities and the evening will see people attending from churches all over the borough, along with Street Pastors from Bangor, Shrewsbury, Newtown, West Cheshire and Ellesmere Port. Street Pastors are trained

to ditch their heels and walk barefoot. David McCarroll, general manager of Liquid Wrexham, said: “We have a great relationship with Wrexham Street Pastors and are happy to support them however we can. We want to ensure our customers have a safe and enjoyable night out and getting home safely is part of that duty of care. “We are looking forward to hosting this special event for Street Pastors from across the region as we see our club as a community venue.” Wrexham Street Pastors local coordinator Gareth Jones said: “Les Isaac, our national director, has always encouraged us to

volunteers from local churches who go out on night patrols to offer listening, caring and practical help. In Wrexham town centre uniformed teams of men and women patrol on Saturdays and two Fridays a month, from 10pm until about 4am. Working in partnership with police and other agencies, they can help people who are upset, lost, lonely or worse for wear, and give assistance such as finding a taxi, reuniting them with friends, or alerting emergency services. They can also provide water for rehydration, blankets for those inappropriately dressed and flip flops for women with aching feet who are tempted

essentials MAILBOX Hello Jill, Just to let you know that we have succeeded in raising the money to do the restorations to our 135 year old building. Work started early in January and was completed this weekend. We raised over our target of £45,000 in six months and are now in the process of getting the church ready for use again. We hope to have the first service some time in March. I will let you know when it is all happening. It has been a very worthwhile enterprise; it certainly brings people together on a project like this. The workmen have been excellent, several different groups, painters, heating engineers, lighting specialists, the scaffolding brigade, all worked well together, and our regular bookings in the hall were hardly affected at all. We have had our Sunday services in our hall which was updated a year or two ago, so now we will be well into the 21st century! Best wishes, Gill

Jill, Following on from your article in the latest issue of Essentials magazine I thought that you might be interested in the attached photograph. Just to warn you that it is a grass snake so be careful how you open the attachment! It had got itself enmeshed in our garden netting. I managed to cut it free without damaging the poor thing although my netting looked a bit of a sorry sight afterwards. It slithered away into the undergrowth. Mrs B is very careful when she is in the veg patch now. A neighbour had one overwintering in his nice warm compost heap last year. Obviously, Darland Lane is popular with snakes, mostly the reptilian sort fortunately. As ever, I enjoyed the latest issue of Essentials (with a capital ‘E’). Keep up the good work. There seem to be a lot of similar magazines now around the country. You need a local mag publishers association! That way you might encourage national advertising to go into a number of mags. Recreational Newsdesk with Phil Jones It is with deep sadness having to report the passing of our Chairman, Bill Barker, who died peacefully at the Wrexham Maelor Hospital on the 6th of February. Having worked in the insurance business in Yorkshire for some 40 years, Bill moved into this area in 1991 and became an enthusiastic and committed member of the Gresford Bowls Club where he soon volunteered to cut the greens, saving the club over ÂŁ1,000 a year. Subsequently, after giving so much of his time to the Bowls Club, he was elected chairman in 2010 where he presided over the purchasing of new equipment and the building of the new and impressive pavilion. In 2011 he became a Trustee of the Gresford Trust where he gave generously of his time and became Chairman of the Trust in 2014 where he rapidly made his mark. His hard work, his sound advice and his engaging personality will be sadly missed and we extend our deepest sympathy to his wife Brenda and the family in their great loss; our thoughts go with them at this sad time.

It is pleasing to note that the number people utilising the facilities of the Trust continues to flourish and this month it is nice to feature the work of the New Wave Dance Group. It is a locally run dance school based at our main hall. They hold classes on a Friday in street dance 5.30pm6.30pm and cheerleading on a Saturday 11am-12pm. The classes are primarily focused on the children learning dance, making new friends and having fun, although their cheerleading team (below left) will be competing in the UKCA nationals this year. They have lots of fundraising events coming up to raise money towards their cheerleading uniforms, fees etc., so if you see any of these advertised or you know any of the girls in the NewWave Tigerz team please help them out. Local Birds & Wildlife Last month produced two unusual bird sightings. The first was very unusual indeed - a large bird of prey seen near Gresford Flash which from the description provided would appear to have been some species of eagle. Our two native eagles are either Golden or Sea Eagles - huge unmistakeable birds with a wingspan of more than 7 feet - neither of which are likely to appear in our locality as wild birds. It is more likely that the bird in question, if it is an eagle (as the description provided would suggest), might be an escapee from a bird of prey centre. The second unusual bird was a Little Egret (pictured top right) seen in the Pulford Brook. Little Egrets are small white herons which have recently colonised the British Isles. They are already established elsewhere in North Wales and also on Wirral. This is now the second record of one in our area. Waterside birds are much in evidence on the River Alyn. Dippers and Grey Wagtails (pictured below) are regularly seen near Rossett Weir. Both species are already displaying in preparation for the breeding season. Kingfishers are also likely almost anywhere along the Alyn although sightings are normally brief - a quick flash of electric blue accompanied by a brief whistle.

There has been a wonderful display of hazel catkins (right) all around the hedges since the beginning of the year and many plants are flowering earlier than usual. March marks the beginning of the serious singing season. Several of our readers have commented that although Blackbirds are plentiful there are few Song Thrushes to be heard. Sadly Song Thrushes are a species in decline. Their song is characterised by repetition of phrases which we find easy to vocalise like Judee, Judee, Why Did You Do It? Why Did You Do It? They are also good mimics. I once lived not far away from a wildlife park and our churchyard Song Thrushes caused a lot of confused interest with excellent imitations of Parakeets. We currently have one singing in Burton that produces a passable rendering of a car alarm.

Living a dream in Walter’s GT40 Have you noticed how stylish Ford cars are these days? Aston Martin-like front grilles have enhanced the design of the Fiesta and Focus, and the new Mondeo has been well received by the Motoring Press. However, the company’s ‘piece de resistance’ was the introduction of their new Ford GT concept car at the recent Detroit Motor Show. This sensational new sports car with its twin-turbocharged, 3.5 litre V6 EcoBoost engine developing over 600 B.H.P. has suddenly reminded people of the original Ford GT40 which won the first Le Mans 24 hours race for Ford in 1966, and as it is the 50th anniversary of this famous win next year, tongues are wagging about the possibility of another GT40 being introduced to celebrate this event. Wishful thinking perhaps! It does remind me of way back in 1972 when I was lucky enough to loan a Ford GT40 MK.3 off the Press Fleet. It was a 1967 road going version of the race car, with a slightly longer body and a less powerful 5-litre V-8 mid-engine, which produced around 300 b.h.p. The GT40 project had been pushed through by Walter Hayes of Ford (who was also responsible for the introduction of the famous Ford Cosworth DFV 3-litre F1 engine) and it was his personal car which had been loaned to me!

With its high power to weight ratio it had a tremendous performance with acceleration to 60 M.P.H. in around 4.5 seconds, and a top speed exceeding 150 M.P.H. Needless to say, it was a sensation on local roads. It was called the GT40 because it was only 40inches high, so you had to slide yourself into the driving seat in a very reclined driving position. No power assisted steering of course, and the roar of that V-8 engine just behind your head and the phenomenal road holding are memories I will never forget. Ford still owns this car (DVC 8G) though it is now gleaming white instead of silver when I had it, and is usually to be seen at the Festival of Speed every year.

With regret, it is expected that the lane closures will be in place until the end of March. Members of the Project Team and representatives of the Highways Agency are visiting the site on a regular basis, to ensure that the on-going works are being done as quickly as we are able, and reviewing ways of improving the traffic flow. The temporary traffic signals on the A483 do not yet work in conjunction with those on the roundabout or Rough Lane. We have made some adjustments to the signals which we hope will aid the traffic flow, and we will continue to monitor this. Permanent signals will be installed within the next few weeks, which will control the traffic more effectively. Our works are now focussed on the Post House roundabout, and while we have done everything we can to keep lane closures to a minimum, unfortunately, this is the section of works that will have the greatest impact on traffic, while we undertake re-surfacing works. The Highways Agency website is updated every Friday, with current information on road closures and diversions relating to these works, and may help you to plan your journeys. Chris’ talk was split into two very distinct subjects: ‘The Furzey Garden’ and ‘100 Plants that Almost Changed the World’. The Furzey Garden story is one that simply could not be made up. From a prosecutorial vicar with almost divine powers of persuasion, to a thatched building lost somewhere in Wimbledon, to a Chelsea gold medal winning garden, the anecdotes just kept on coming. The rich history of this amazing garden, the aim of the Furzey Gardens Charitable Trust, and the vision and drive of the aforementioned Reverend Tim Selwood are all worthy of your attention. What our

audience could not fail to take away from this part of the evening was that anything is possible if the commitment and desire is present amongst those who aim high. The second part of the evening saw Chris take a more irreverent look at horticulture and the plants that ‘almost changed the world’. If you want to see the full list of 100, you should certainly buy Chris’ book (“100 Plants that Almost Changed the World”), then you too can know what links nettles with suppleness, pineapples with cannibalism, lettuce with the Catholic Church, and carrots with a battleship... As if all this were not enough, Chris was also kind enough to take questions from our audience, following the cheese and wine. From top-tips on moving springflowering plants in spring, to Chris’... revealing first meeting with Alan Titchmarsh, this session was as entertaining as it was informative. This was the Society’s first major event, and we are very pleased that the evening was such a great success. The Committee would like to thank Chris for being so generous with his time. We would also like to thank Bellis Brothers for sponsoring the event, and providing every member of the audience with a free gift. And finally, we would like to thank our audience— members of the Society and guests—for attending in such high numbers. Marathon Fundraising for Rossett Pre-School Playgroup I’m Tom and I’m running the Manchester Marathon on April 19th to raise funds for Rossett Pre-School Playgroup. I’m running up to 40 miles a week in training for the 26.2 mile race. My doctor told me that training for a marathon could add years to my life. I think he was right. I feel ten years older already!

Meryl Parry The funeral has taken place of Mrs Meryl Parry, who lived in Marford and died at Nightingale House Hospice on 23rd January, 2015, aged 71 years. She leaves son Stephen and family. Mrs Parry was a furniture shop proprietor who ran the Parry’s Furniture Warehouse in Gwersyllt for many years. The funeral service at Pentrebychan Crematorium was conducted by Fr. Tudor Hughes. Mr Stephen Parry and family of the late Mrs Meryl Parry, wish to thank all family, friends and neighbours for the sympathy and support shown in their bereavement.
