Motivated to Move

By EssentialsMAG motivation contributor SASHA KENNEY In today’s world everybody is looking for a magic pill. A magic pill that will make us slimmer, a magic pill that will make us feel better, a magic pill that will solve our problem.

I have some good news! I know of the magic pill. It is simple. But it is not easy.

The magic pill? Exercise.

The benefits of physical movement have long been documented; it’s great for your body and mind, it is energising, it clears your head, lowers stress levels etc.…

So what is the problem?

We know we should move, go for a walk, run or a workout. We make a plan, but then we don’t follow it through. And this happens again and again. Why are we so good at thinking of what to do, but so terrible at actually doing those things?

The problem is we are skipping an essential step: the feelings. We rarely take our emotions into account, even though they are a fundamental part of why humans do what they do. We keep finding excuses, because we don’t feel like going out today.

Guess what? You will probably rarely feel like it.

So track your progress. Celebrate small wins. Research shows that rewards are responsible for three-quarters of why you do things. Congratulate yourself whenever you complete a workout.

Use peer pressure Surround yourself with active people.

According to research, you are likely to develop health habits of those around you.

If you’re in a group of people who have high goals for looking after themselves, you are likely take on that same attitude.

As I said: ”It’s simple, but not easy.” Still, you can do this. Ignore the negative selftalk, put on your workout gear and go!

Ian Lucas MP for Wrexham Wrexham fully deserves its reputation as a ‘festivals town’, with an impressive array of events taking place here all year round.

I have a poster in my constituency office window which lists some of the cultural highlights in and around Wrexham in 2019, and there are no fewer than 34 different events featured. It’s an impressive figure and, as MP for Wrexham, I support these festivals in any way I can to help ensure they are successful. I am invited to most of them and do my very best to make sure I can attend, while I have a more hands-on involvement in other events – such as the Singing Streets choir festival, which is arranged annually by my staff and myself.

issues and substance abuse. I had the idea to form such a choir after seeing how the homeless community in Wrexham engaged with choirs at our Singing Streets events.

The One Love Choir is making a positive difference to its members and the community in Wrexham. Every week, we see how singing together helps the choir members find new purpose and inspiration.

You may have already seen the choir perform as they get out and about across Wrexham, singing at various events. They made an appearance at the excellent Focus Wales festival, an international showcase for new music in Wales which was held right here in Wrexham.

Wrexham was very much in my mind while I was working on a report in Parliament which was published in mid-May. The report – compiled by the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) select committee, of which I am a member – was called ‘Changing Lives’ and it looked into the social impact of culture and sport on communities in the UK. What we found was that involvement in the arts or sports provides a constructive influence on young people, giving them positive role models.

We even found that reoffending rates could be reduced through access to sport or cultural programmes. The report concluded that sport and culture does not only enrich our lives, it can also be used to address a range of long-standing social problems.

There is so much going on culturally in Wrexham and so much of what goes on here chimes with what we talk about in the DCMS Changing Lives report, which makes a series of recommendations to the UK Government advising them on how they should do more to embrace culture and sport.

We already do a pretty good job of that in Wrexham. And while the loss of the Wales Comic Con was a big disappointment, we must continue to be ambitious and make sure we are the right home for events as important as this.

Disney Dine 2020 – What’s it all about?

One of the most sought-after Orlando offers - Free dining at selected Walt Disney World Resort hotels – is now available for 2020. Delmar World’s Howard Davies give the run down and some valuable advice.

Value for money is rarely the cheapest option available. This is particularly true at Walt Disney World in Florida where selected hotels currently include free dining for guests. There are however a number of aspects of this deal one needs to consider before jumping in and spending such a large amount – even if it could be the ultimate family holiday! Not all hotels provide the same dining package.

Disney has three different grades of accommodation and each provides a different free dine package as follows;

total is automatically added to parties of six or more and serves as a guideline to what is expected.

• Disney Value Resort hotels – FREE breakfast (not that great a deal!)

• Disney Moderate Resort hotels – FREE Quick-Service Dine Plan • Disney Deluxe Resort hotels & villas – FREE Disney Dine Plan

Want some free spending money as well?

For each qualifying room in a moderate or deluxe property you will receive to $200 free spends if you book by 2nd July 2019 and $100 for booking by 22nd October 2019. Free Dine packages can still be booked through 5th November but no spending money would then apply.

The difference between the two Dine Plans is that the latter includes a waiter-service, two course (main course + dessert) meal whereas the “Quick-Service” is a self-serve, counter style option offering a more limited choice of foods. With the “Disney Dine Plan” you can also upgrade to a Dinner Show or a signature restaurant by using the equivalent of two waiter-service credits.

Once booked go to www.mydisneyexperience.com and set up your personal file and download the app. Set your dates for Fastpass and restaurant bookings and research what you wish to achieve well in advance.

Restaurant Review Levant Kitchen & Bar

It’s a word that often seems to stray from its true definition, in favour of meaning the exact opposite. I recently overheard a young woman recounting the fact that she ‘literally died’ during a particularly awkward sounding yoga class, involving the ‘Downward Dog’ position and some audibly outward flatulence.

Fortunately, this was not true and due to her evident ability to breathe, she had in fact ‘literally lived’ through the yogic horror.

With this in mind, I make the following statement in the truest sense of the word: Levant is literally offering up the best culinary experience in Wrexham town.

of rocket and micro herbs, the Salt ‘n’ Pepper Squid was everything it should be: crisp-coated, soft-centred, delicatelyflavoured and fresh.

The chef then recommended the Scallops.

Three plump and perfectly seared beauties formed an orderly queue across my plate; their buttery, caramelised crust concealing tender, opaque centres. The natural sweetness of the shellfish worked well with the slightly sharp yet creamy Prosecco sauce – and all of this edible opulence for £6.50!

Inspired by the Eastern Mediterranean flavours of The Levant region, the restaurant’s menu is an immediately pleasing read. Waves of flavour crash through in the tempting descriptions of each carefully considered dish and the devastating realisation that you can’t dive into all of them is a tough one to accept.

For the main event, Rhi ordered Duck Breast. The Plum and Ginger sauce it was served with held the dish together, offering a flavourful depth of warmth and sweetness. Charred petals of soft, swirling potato came together to form the most beautiful edible rose accompaniment; rich with butter and fragrant with thyme.

I opted for the Salmon Supreme: flaky, fresh fish; served with an emerald array of crunchy vegetables; sweet pea purée; and a genius red cabbage purée that I practically licked clean from my plate.

Predictably, I chose Chocolate Fondant, which was seductively decadent... rich, satisfying and generously portioned, it was everything I want in a man. Sorry, I mean dessert - everything I want in a dessert.

The Crème Brûlée was classic simplicity at its finest: crunchy, caramelised, satisfyingly crackable sugar, concealing smooth, sweet, vanilla-vibrant custard.

Levant is challenging the norm when it comes to Wrexham restaurants and I think they’re onto something pretty special. A genuine and uncompromising passion for exciting food lies at the heart of this unique eatery, without a whiff of pretension or extortionate pricing.

Find me a restaurant that cooks scallops THAT perfectly for THAT price in THAT portion size, and I will eat my own kidney. Literally.

Chicken and Parsley Patties FOR THE PATTIES 250g chicken breast minced, or chopped finely by hand 1 ½ tbsp parsley, finely chopped or 1 tsp dried parsley 1 ½ spring onions, very finely chopped or half an onion, very finely chopped ½ tsp butter 30g fresh bread crumbs 25ml milk Salt and pepper to taste Oil for frying

FOR THE SWEDE AND POTATO MASH 1 large potato cut into 2cm dice ¼ swede, cut into 2cm dice 20g butter 1 garlic clove, chopped finely 40g grated parmesan or cheddar Salt FOR THE BRAISED LEEK AND CHEESY SAUCE 150g leek, cut into 1cm rounds 15g flour 25g butter 115ml full fat milk 50g cheddar grated ½ tsp of salt

To make the patties 1. Soften the spring onions in a small frying pan with the butter, do not brown.

Cool.

2. In a mixing bowl add the chicken, spring onions, breadcrumbs, milk and chopped parsley. Season with salt and pepper. Mix well.

3. To make the chicken patties, weigh the mixture and divide into four. Shape each ball of chicken into the shape of a hamburger. You can do this with your hands or put into an oiled ramekin, pat down until flat then turn out onto a tray and put into the fridge to rest and firm up for half an hour. You can make these patties up to 12 hours in advance if you keep them in the fridge.

4. Fifteen minutes before eating heat some oil in a frying pan to a medium to low heat and add the patties, cook on each side for four minutes until golden brown. Drain onto some kitchen paper and rest for five minutes covered.

To make the mash 1. Put the swede and potatoes into a large saucepan covered with water, add a large pinch of salt.

2. Cook for 20 to 25 minutes until soft. Drain well.

3. Add the butter, garlic, add grated cheese.

4. Mash up with a potato masher, check for seasoning.

To make the leek and cheesy sauce 1. Soften the leeks with the butter in a non-stick pan on a low heat, be careful not to brown. This will take a good 30 minutes as they need to soften really well.

2. Now add the our to the leek, mix in well and cook for a minute on a low heat.

Add half the milk, bring to simmer, mix well now and then add the other half.

Cook until it the mixture thickens.

3. Add the cheese, mix in until melted and then taste for seasoning.

4. This can be made in advance and reheated.

How Tree’s Actually Heal Us – it’s True!

From Scandinavia to Japan there is a huge growing health trend around spending time amongst trees and nature. Forest Bathing is being talked about a lot (it’s called Shinrin Yoku in Japan) and in Scotland doctors are now prescribing ‘time in nature’ but is there really anything in it?

I mean we all know how lovely it is to spend time in a forest and we feel refreshed but is there any science behind the claims that healing can actually take place? YES, there is!

One of the most compelling studies concludes that trees emit phytoncides, these are airborne chemicals or ‘aromatherapy oils’ that help protect the tree against fungal infection, when we breathe in these ‘oils’ there are long lasting health benefits for us, our immune systems are boosted by a 40% increase in natural killer cells in the body. These cells are responsible for fighting disease including cancer. Pine forests are said to be the best for this.

Studies have also been done with prison inmates, which show that those who have regular access to green spaces are less likely to get ill than those who have no or very little access to green spaces. Studies also show that hospital patients recovery rates from surgery, infection and other ailments is much faster when they have a view into nature. Various studies have been done on healthy people and how nature time has positive physiological changes on blood pressure, muscle tension, stress levels and relaxation.

There are other ways that trees can heal us too. Take birch trees for example; the twigs and leaves can be made into a tea, good for general detoxing, urinary complaints, cystitis, rheumatic and arthritic troubles and gout. Birch tea can also be used as a compress for skin conditions like eczema.

The spring sap can be harvested from the tree and drunk as a cleansing tonic.

Oak bark, taken as a decoction, can be used as an astringent, which is also antimicrobial and antiseptic. Conditions including diarrhoea, mouth and throat inflammations, bleeding, burns and sores can be treated. An oak twig frayed at the end can be used as a natural toothbrush for cleaning the teeth and gums with its built in antiseptic and anti-inflammatory benefits.

You might know the amazing little autumn berries borne by the elder tree, which are renowned for boosting our immune system. These can be made into a tea, a syrup or wine. The flower blossom can also be used to make a cordial, this can help with congestion and reduce the symptoms of hayfever.

So there you have it, nature often has the cure. Amazing!

Limitations Live Only in Our Minds

By EssentialsMAG fitness contributor LEE EASON Lee Eason is a local veteran suffering from PTSD. He has set himself the challenge of running 10 kilometers every day for a year - a target of 3,650 kilometers in 2019!

A good workout can help you get great shut-eye. One thing I enjoy is a workout towards the end of the day to help me wind down when it comes to bed time.

However, with a busy lifestyle and three children this can be a hard task and unpredictable at times!

After doing some research, I have found that even as little as a ten-minute workout can help to improve your sleep. Also exercising for just 10 minutes may reduce your risk for developing troublesome sleep disorders, such as sleep apnoea and restless leg syndrome.

What’s the Exercise/Sleep Connection?

Physical activity improves sleep quality and increases sleep duration. Exercise may also bolster sleep in other ways, because it reduces stress and tires you out. Early morning and afternoon exercise may also help reset the sleep/wake cycle by raising body temperature slightly, then allowing it to drop and trigger sleepiness a few hours later. It can be especially helpful if you are able to exercise outdoors and let your body absorb natural sunlight during the daytime hours (especially now we have the longer days on our side).

Timing it Right Exercising at night doesn't interfere with everyone's sleep. It depends on the individual. So, if you find that physical activity in the evening revs you up too

much, do it earlier in the day. But if you find that the opposite is true - maybe you come home so exhausted that you hit the pillow and fall asleep, then, by all means, keep on doing what you're doing, whatever works for you and gives you the right night’s sleep. If you struggle, try out something new and let me know if it helps!

This month I want to give you a little motivation for anyone thinking they are too old, or too overweight, not trained for a while, or just building up the excuses.

A lady who I always remember hearing her story is Marie Dorothy Buder, (AKA the Iron nun). She is a World Record Holder in the long-distance triathlon race called Ironman, this consists of a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike ride and a 26.2 mile run. Marie completed this at the age of 82 years old!

I hope that is enough to kick you in to gear.

Marie is 87 and still competing.

One thing I have noticed is that there is a lot more people out on their bikes, running and walking and that is great to see. If one person reads this and takes some motivation, then that’s 20great!

The Good Life Experience A Weekend of Discovery & Adventure Since its launch in 2014, The Good Life Experience has been as festival focused on more than just music, or food, or craft.

Instead co-founders Cerys Mathews, Steve ‘Abbo’ Abbott and Charlie & Caroline Gladstone poured their collective energy into the creation of a festival full of powerful, memorable and -most importantly - FUN experiences.

In many ways The Good Life Experience is a response to modern life. We’ve had boom and bust, mindless consumption and enforced austerity. And interesting things have come out of that austerity; a retreat to values and fashions that seem to encapsulate simpler times, the good old days. Superficially, this has meant bicycles and baking, beards and tweed, vintage style and gardening are now more popular than ever; on a deeper level it has meant that millions of people are returning to craft as a source of solace and comfort, that more people than ever want to get outdoors, to discover and consume things that are made with passion and purpose.

People are trying to discover what makes them truly happy.

At its core this movement can best be defined, perhaps, as The Search for The Good Life; a life fulfilled and considered, yes, but also fun and values the things that matter… family, friends, connection to the great outdoors, proper food and drink, discovery, music that comes from the soul, great books, craft. All the things that don’t cost a great deal but that make life richer, more rewarding and better fun. It was an ongoing discussion about The Search for The Good Life that led four friends to create The Good Life Experience. A festival with a difference. The idea was simple, to create a festival unlike any other, one that was curated entirely by the founders.

So, if it fits in with the founders’ idea of The Good Life, it features at the festival; great food, axe throwing, campfire cooking, mass sing-a-longs, comedy, beer served by experts, talks by explorers, raucous music, a vintage fairground, butchery displays, poetry, literature and endless How To… talks. Everything is aimed at adults and children alike. There aren’t too many festivals that truly do that.

The Good Life Experience 2019 will be slightly smaller than previous years. It will be more focused, and more intimate, while remaining as warm and friendly as ever.

The Countdown is on for Inaugural Kids Duathlon in Wrexham Entries are open for the first ever Smart Financial Canute Kids Duathlon in Rossett, Wrexham.

The event aimed at local primary school and Year 7 pupils will be held at Darland High School on Sunday June 30th.

The race is part of The Smart Financial Canute Kids Duathlon Series which started in Lymm in May and will finish in Knutsford in July. It comprises of three run-bike-run events and a fun run for children aged 4-12 years old.

“We had nearly 100 kids taking part in the first race in Lymm and we hope to have similar numbers in Rossett,” Organiser Helen Murray said.

Mrs Murray grew up in Rossett and attended St Peter’s Primary School and Darland in the 1990s.

“It’s amazing to be able to give something back to the local community and hopefully this will inspire a whole generation of kids to lead an active, healthy lifestyle,” she said.

The Smart Financial Canute Kids Duathlon Series is aimed at encouraging more children to get involved in multi-sport and all participants receive a medal and goodies at the finish.

“Local businesses have really got behind the event. The Village Bakery is supplying some treats for our young athletes and I am delighted that we have the support of Alf Jones Cycles in Gresford, where I bought my first road bike as well as from Kellogg’s where I worked for three summers as a student!” Murray said.

Children taking part in the duathlon must have a bike in good working order and helmets are compulsory during the bike section of the race.

“The main aim is for everyone to have fun, whether watching, cheering or taking part.”

Mrs Murray said.

News from Wrexham County Council The 30 hour Education and Childcare offer explained.

Since September 2019, the Welsh government has been piloting 30 hours of free education and childcare for three and four year olds living in Wrexham County Borough.

Parents have been delighted to access free education and childcare. Since the introduction of the free childcare element, some school nursery classes in Wrexham have experienced a drop in attendance as parents are beginning to choose childcare above education. Here are some facts you may want to consider if you are an eligible parent: Will my child and I meet the criteria?

You will need to be a resident in the borough of Wrexham to access this offer. Your child can access both education and childcare, from the start of the term following their third birthday until the September after they turn four. Term dates are published on Wrexham Council’s website. The education element is a universal offer, open to all eligible children.

How do I apply?

For the Early Education or Nursery Education offer you need to make an application to Wrexham Council. wrexham.gov.uk and follow the links for school admissions. To access the childcare offer, Wrexham parents can check their eligibility and apply online at: www.flintshire.gov.uk/wrexhamchildcareoffer Can you explain the two different parts of the combined offer?

Statutory Education is either 10 hours a week of Early Education or 12.5 hours of Nursery Education. Parents can then claim the remaining hours in childcare. So, that’s 20 hours of childcare if you use 10 hours of education, or 17.5 hours of child-care if you use12.5 hours of education. You can’t claim over 20 hours of childcare in term time, but if eligible, you can claim up to 30 hours of childcare for up to nine weeks in the school holidays.

What are the benefits of the education offer?

Children accessing the educational element of the offer will follow the Foundation Phase curriculum in line with schools. Many teachers report that children who have previously taken up their early education or nursery entitlement are much quicker to settle into school, and they have already started to learn skills, giving them a head start in confidence and independence. Members of staff are regularly trained in line with local and national updates. Settings that deliver Early Education must be approved, and are inspected by Estyn in line with schools.

Will this pilot continue in the future?

As the government has spent a large amount of time and resources on piloting the scheme it is very likely that the 30 hour offer is here to stay. However, it is currently in pilot form and may look slightly different when it is rolled out fully in 2020. *There is no guarantee that an early education place or nursery place will guarantee a school place.

RSPCA - Dogs Die in Hot Cars!

Never leave your dog alone in a car on a warm day. Many people still believe that it’s ok to leave a dog in a car on a warm day if the windows are left open or they’re parked in the shade, but the truth is, it’s still a very dangerous situation for the dog.

A car can become as hot as an oven very quickly. When it’s 22 degrees, in a car it can reach 47 degrees within the hour.

What to do if you see a dog in a car on a warm day. In an emergency, we may not be able to attend quickly enough, and with no powers of entry, we’d need police assistance at such an incident. Don’t be afraid to dial 999, the police will inform us if animal welfare assistance is required.

Help a dog in a hot car • Establish the animal's health and condition. If they're displaying any signs of heatstroke dial 999 immediately.

• If the situation becomes critical for the dog and the police are too far away or unable to attend, many people’s instinct will be to break into the car to free the dog. If you decide to do this, please be aware that without proper justification,

this could be classed as criminal damage and, potentially, you may need to defend your actions in court.

• Make sure you tell the police what you intend to do and why. Take pictures or videos of the dog and the names and numbers of witnesses to the incident.

Emergency First Aid for dogs For the best chance of survival, dogs suffering from heatstroke urgently need to have their body temperature lowered gradually.

• Move him/her to a shaded/cool area.

• Immediately douse the dog with cool (not cold) water, to avoid shock. If possible, you can also use wet towels or place him/her in the breeze of a fan.

• Allow the dog to drink small amounts of cool water.

• Continue to douse the dog with cool water until his/her breathing starts to settle but never so much that he/she begins to shiver.

Once the dog is cool, take him/her to the nearest vet as a matter of urgency.
