The majority of Wrexham already has superfast broadband but just how much has the internet changed the local area?

On The Beach - A Guide to a Safe and Fun Time at the Seaside this Summer You're all packed for a day at the beach.

You've got sunscreen, a beach chair and a good book, and you're looking forward to a day in the sun and surf. When you arrive at the beach, though, it's lined with red flags. The RNLI has developed a flag warning system to notify beachgoers of potential water hazards. Understanding and heeding these coloured flags keeps you and your family safe in the water and helps you enjoy your trip to the beach.

The seaside isn’t most people’s usual environment so it’s easy to miss some of its hazards. Try to plan for the following points before you set out and look for the safety signs when you get to your beach.

Hazards on the Beach • High and low tides • Sharp objects/litter hidden in the sand • Slippery rocks/big drops from cliffs and harbour walls • Unstable cliffs – stay away from cliffs at all times.

And in the Water • Rip currents/dumping waves – they could drag you out of your depth • Jellyfish and weeverfish, which can sting • Offshore winds – don’t get blown out to sea man made structures like piers and groynes • Other water users – swimmers don’t mix well with powerboats!

If you see anyone in trouble, alert the lifeguards, or call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard.

Rip Currents Rips are strong currents that can quickly take swimmers from the shallows out beyond their depth. Lifeguards will show you where you can avoid rips but if you do get caught in one: • Stay calm – don’t panic • If you can stand, wade don’t swim • Keep hold of your board or inflatable to help you float • Raise your hand and shout for help • Never try to swim directly against the rip or you’ll get exhausted • Swim parallel to the beach until free of the rip, then make for shore.

Family Fun Exploring the seashore is fantastic fun for all the family. You can find a new world of wildlife in shallow pools among boulders and sands. While most creatures are harmless, weeverfish, jellyfish and sea anemones are common finds that will cause a painful injury, so please remember to look and not touch.

• Leave animals where you find them • Carefully lift and replace any rocks you may have removed – there are animals underneath that need them for shelter • Leave attached seaweed in place – there is plenty lying loose on the shoreline • Do not trample through the rock pools • Play away from cliffs.

Choose a Lifeguarded Beach Most of all, try to choose a lifeguarded beach. A list of RNLI lifeguarded beaches is available at www.RNLI.org/beach

RED AND YELLOW FLAGS Lifeguarded area: safest place to swim, bodyboard and use inflatables.

BLACK AND WHITE CHEQUERED FLAGS For surfboards, kayaks and other non-powered craft. NEVER swim or bodyboard here.

RED FLAG Danger! NEVER go in the water when the red flag is up, under any circumstances.

ORANGE WINDSOCK Indicates offshore or strong wind conditions. NEVER use an inflatable when the sock is flying.

Viv Lavis Jones Bangor-on-Dee History Childrens Entertainment When Mr Harrop Mallalieu and his wife Elsie Mary from Ellesmere took over as landlords of the Buck Hotel early in 1929, he was already well known locally as a sportsman, playing cricket for Ellesmere and she had established a reputation for training troupes of children and putting on concerts and other entertainments.

He was born in Stalybridge, the youngest son of Alderman Harrop Mallalieu, J.P., and she was the daughter of Llewelyn Price and Councillor Mrs Price, J.P. of Ruabon Road, Wrexham. They proved to be a popular couple.

In November 1929 she organised and trained a troupe of children, the Quaintesques, and put on a very successful concert in the assembly rooms. The singing, acting and dancing and the costumes of the entertainers were much admired. Thanks to Capt. Holford Harrison of Maesynant who lent his electric generator, the stage and hall were brilliantly lighted with a myriad of colour. The entertainment included a delightful sketch 'Island Sea Dreams' (produced by Mrs Arrowsmith in which she played the part of Capt Stark) given

by Tommy Prandle (Jack), Edwin Bevan (Phillip), Geof Dodd (Boatswain Bow), Jack Spoor (Red George), Geof Arrowsmith (Black William), George Humphries and George Evanson (pirates).

Gladys Twiss was the accompanist for the rehearsals and on the day. Others worthy of especial thanks were: Tom Parry, stage manager, Mrs W Dodd, treasurer, Mrs W Griffiths, Mrs P Humphries, secretaries, and Mrs Barry prompter. The dresses were made by a committee comprising: Mesdames Parry, E Griffiths, Daly, Mitten, Ellis Jarvis, Barlow, Bartlem Humphries B Bodd, F Dodd, Copnall and D Griffiths. At the conclusion of the performance Capt Holford Harrison handed gifts to the performers and to those people who had worked hard behind the scenes to make the evening such a success: Mrs Mallalieu, Gladys Twiss, Mabel Parry and Mrs Arrowsmith.

Mrs Mallalieu was the prime mover in the formation of the Rose Queen festival in 1930 when Daisy Jarvis was chosen by her fellow pupils to be the first Rose Queen. The Quaintesques performed at another concert in April 1933 in aid of the festival but unfortunately Mrs Mallalieu was unable to attend, as Mr Mallalieu had been taken ill. He died not long after aged only 35 and never saw his nine-year old daughter crowned Rose Queen. Mrs Mallalieu took over the licence of the Buck Hotel for twelve months before deciding to move from the village. Her last task was to have been the crowning of Olive Humphries as Rose Queen but she was unable to be present at the last minute and, according to Olive, no one else took her place and so the last Rose Queen was never actually crowned.

North Wales Fire Brigade Twelve Top Tips for Fire Safety In the wake of the tragic events at Grenfell Tower, London, it’s important that you know how to keep you and your family safe.

DID YOU KNOW? If you cannot make voice calls, you can contact the 999 emergency services by SMS text from your mobile phone. You will only be able to use this service if you have registered with emergency SMS first. Text ‘register’ to 999. You will get a reply – then follow the instructions sent.

Install smoke alarms on each level in your home. Keep them free from dust and test them once a week. Consider buying a 10year alarm, otherwise change the batteries in your alarm every year.

Make a fire action plan so that everyone in your home knows how to escape if there's a fire.

Keep the exits from your home clear so that people can escape if there's a fire. Make sure that everyone in your home can easily find the keys for doors and windows.

Take extra care in the kitchen - accidents while cooking account for over half of fires in homes. Never leave young children alone in the kitchen.

Never leave lit candles in rooms that nobody is in, or in rooms where children are on their own. Make sure candles are in secure holders on a surface that doesn't burn and are away from any materials that could burn.

Make sure cigarettes are stubbed out properly and are disposed of carefully, and never smoke in bed.

Don't overload electrical sockets.

Remember one plug for one socket.

Keep matches and lighters where children can't see or reach them.

Take special care when you are tired or when you've been drinking.

Take extra care when cooking with hot oil.

Consider buying a deep-fat fryer which is controlled by a thermostat (if you don't already have one).

Do not leave the television or other electrical appliances on standby as this could cause a fire. Always switch them off and unplug when not in use.

Get into the habit of closing doors at night.

If you want to keep a child's bedroom door open, close the doors to the lounge and kitchen. This may well help save their life if there is a fire.

EssentialsMAG Tasty Recipe

Chilli & Cheese Beef Burgers INGREDIENTS 500g minced steak

2 tsp olive oil

1 small onion, roughly chopped

1 free-range egg yolk

2 spring onions, roughly chopped

1 tsp dijon mustard

2 garlic cloves, crushed

Pinch salt and pepper

1 fresh chilli, de-seeded and chopped

1 head little gem lettuce

or 1 tsp dried chili flakes 20g chopped coriander

2 tomatoes, sliced 4 burger buns of your choice

20g grated extra mature cheddar cheese

METHOD Place the onion, spring onion, garlic and chilli in a food processor and pulse until finely chopped. Gently cook this mixture in the olive oil over a medium–low heat until soft.

Place the beef mince into a mixing bowl, season with salt and pepper and mix.

Now add the onion and chilli mixture, grated cheese, coriander, Dijon mustard and egg yolk, and mix really well until all the ingredients look evenly incorporated.

Shape into four burgers and pop into the fridge for about 30 minutes.

These burgers can be cooked on a barbecue, under a grill or on a griddle pan on the stove. Cook your burgers for 12-15 minutes turning half way through, making sure they are cooked throughout.

Two minutes before the end of cooking, add the monterey jack cheese and leave to melt a little. Lightly toast your buns. Place some of the crunchy little gem on the base of the buns, top with sliced tomato, then add your cheesy chilli burger, a dollop of burger relish (if you like) and finally add the bun crown.

Stalking and harassment have always existed, but since the growth of the internet, it has become easier for those who carry it out to do so either as an extension of their existing activities, or purely online.

This persistent and frequent unwanted contact from another individual is highly undesirable and the outcome to either male or female victims is at best, discomfort and annoyance, and at worst severe distress and mental trauma.

Cyberstalkers can be either strangers or people you know (sometimes ex-partners), and there are many different motives. The more determined or obsessive stalkers become, the more likely they are to move from one online channel to another until your online presence is fully intruded upon. They commonly obtain their information about you via your online details of personal and financial affairs, relationships, social and work life and your location.

In November 2012, stalking became a named offence in England and Wales for the first time.

If you are affected by Cyberstalking • Gather and document as much evidence as you can • Report the stalking to the police.

• Seek help and support from relevant organisations, for example the National Stalking Helpline on 0808 802 0300, or email advice@stalkinghelpline.org Unlike when they’re meeting someone face-to-face, children don’t always know who they’re actually ‘talking’ to online, even if they think they do. This makes it easy for someone who may want to hurt your child, to pretend they are someone else and become their 'friend'.

Tell your children they must never email, chat, or text with strangers and it’s never OK to meet a stranger in the real world. Whoever they see or meet online is still a stranger, no matter how often they see them online.

Journey of a Lifetime Overton Ego Xcentric salon owner Robin Langley and his son Ethan Langley are embarking on the trip of a lifetime… they have been training tirelessly for months now to prepare themselves to cycle from Vancouver in Canada to LA in America covering a whopping 1,400 miles! The trip will take 1 month and it will be during the height of summer starting in July and ending in August. They will have one small bag each which they will carry on their backs throughout the duration of the trip, stopping at hostels or motels along the way.

The reason for this bike ride? to raise money for charity as well as raising money and awareness for Ethan's racing career.

Ethan is 14 years old and has been racing since he was 9 years old. During that period he has grown into a very talented racer and has potential to go the whole way, his dream being to one day race in formula 1.

He currently drives a Junior Max Kart reaching speeds of up to 74mph. He is very dedicated and races most weekends sacrificing spending time with friends doing what 14 year old boys do. This is his passion and racing is in his blood. The aim is to move up to the next level of racing where he will drive a Ginetta car, reaching 130mph. Without help achieving the funds and sponsors Ethan needs he may never achieve his dream of one day becoming a Formula 1 driver.

The charity Robin and Ethan are hoping to raise money for is Alder Hey Children's Hospital. A wonderful hospital that I’m sure has helped a child that we know somewhere along the line. Robin himself has Alder Hey Hospital to thank for saving his daughters life when she was just 3 days old. Jade had a life saving heart operation for a blocked aorta and was the first baby to receive this life saving operation. It is so important that we give back, these funds do so much for these hospitals.

#ChesterFrosties Open Water Swimmers

By EssentialsMAG fitness contributor HELEN CONWAY With increasing sunny days and high temperatures, it's tempting to cool off with a dip in an inviting pool of cool, clear water.

But, unless you are experienced and with a buddy, please don't be tempted to jump into your local river or lake, however attractive it seems on a hot day.

Open water, or wild swimming, is becoming increasingly popular and gaining more and more exposure. There are many large, well organised open water swimming events through the year, as well as triathlons and iron men competitions where an open water swim is a compulsory element. Most of these cater for novices, so a perfect opportunity to gain experience safely.

But it's not an activity that should be taken without understanding the risks. And there are many. That’s why I belong to a local group called #ChesterFrosties. As experienced and seasoned open water swimmers, we ALWAYS follow these safety guidelines: • When entering cold water, even in summer, you experience something called the gasp reflex. This is where the cold water causes the swimmer to involuntarily gasp, which can be fatal if someone has jumped in and is submerged rather than entering the water carefully and slowly.

• A calm body of water can often hide unseen undercurrents. If we don't know a lake or river, we don't enter it.

• We never swim alone. We always swim with another experienced swimmer and if possible, also have someone on the bank for shore support. We always advise our companions how far we intend to swim and for how long.

• We recognise when we are getting too cold. Having a hot drink available for when we are out of the water and layers of warm clothes ready. It's completely normal to shiver after swimming in cold water, so we always have a hot drink and something to eat and do not drive until the shivering has gone.

• We swim along the bank rather than away from it, and always stay within the reach of help.

• If we fall in, we don't fight. We allow ourselves to float on our backs until we are calm and then able to exit safely. This is the premise of the RNLI's most recent campaign, 'Float to Live'.

• If we cannot answer simple questions about ourselves (telephone number, pet's name, etc...), then our mental state is being adversely affected by extremes (heat or cold or exhaustion). We exit the water immediately and get help.

Most of us would prefer to see our home, savings and other assets eventually pass to our family and loved ones. Yet government guidelines for long term care funding mean that this wish may never become a reality.

Clearly this was a very hot topic in the recent General Election and the guidelines and rules undoubtedly will be the subject of more attention in the years to come. It may well be worth taking control of this topic early – and understand what you can legitimately do to reduce the potential impact for your family.

State assistance towards the cost of social care is means-tested: primarily by imposing upper and lower capital limits on your income and savings, property and other assets.

You may think you can avoid the problem by giving away your assets now and escaping the attention of your Local Authority in the future. However, under current rules, this would need to be done with caution as your Local Authority may have the power to include any gifted assets in their assessment, as if they had never been given away.

The harsh reality therefore could be that you are still expected to pay for care, even though you no longer have the assets to cover these costs.

This could mean a reliance on state provision, which would naturally reduce your choice and location of care home. Having worked hard all your life to enjoy a lifestyle of freedom and choice do you really want to have your care home chosen by your Local Authority?

If your personal income and assets are in excess of the upper capital limits, and if you do not qualify for nursing care, you would normally be expected to pay for your own care in full.

With careful financial planning it may be possible to fund care for as long as required, whilst safeguarding as much capital as possible. We have previously written about Trusts* and gifting opportunities which are just two areas to consider.

With more of us needing long term care as a result of living longer than ever before, serious consideration must be given now to how you will fund these fees without eroding your family’s legacy.

If you are ‘getting on’ or perhaps help look after parents or grandparents where you would like to understand your options to tackle this area, we would look forward to hearing from you.

In truth a lot of our clients are in effect ‘younger for longer’ (how good is that?) and careful planning is perhaps more important now than ever.

News from Wrexham County Council Annual Service of Remembrance The Pentrebychan Crematorium 'Annual Service of Remembrance', will this year be held in the Crematorium Chapel on Sunday 23 July 2016, at 2.00pm. Superheroes Appeal – Year of Legends exhibition at Wrexham Museum Staff at Wrexham County Borough Museum & Archives are organizing a special exhibition to mark the Year of Legends and need your help. The museum has teamed up with a local artist who works as an illustrator for DC Comics, Marvel Comics and Titan Comics producing pencil drawings for their superhero cartoons.

We would like to display some historic superhero memorabilia alongside the drawings and are appealing to local collectors to lend the following for display in the exhibition or online.

Figures, toys and models of Superman, Batman, Spider-Man, Dr Who, Wonder Woman, Captain Marvel or Iron Man, made between 1939 and 1979. Comics featuring these superheroes from the Golden Age (1938-50) or the Silver Age (1956-70).

Author kicks off literary career with help of writer-led class at Wrexham Library A first-time local author has praised a writing course which helped him write his first book – detailing the history and importance of the River Alyn. Peter Evans, of Hope, started on the Creative Writing class at Wrexham Library after receiving an e-mail advertising the course from Wrexham Council. With assistance from Wrexham author and course tutor Peter Read, Mr Evans has now successfully penned and published his first book Resurrection River – a social history of the Alyn and its effect on the lives of those living near it.

Mr Evans said: “I hope that the library continues to serve as a source of inspiration and guidance for other writers, and I’m sure there are plenty of budding writers in Wrexham who would find it a very useful resource in helping them to get their own work on to the printed page.”

News from Wrexham County Council Cladding on Council Homes In light of the recent tragic events at Grenfell Tower in London, Wrexham County Borough Council has received a number of enquiries regarding the installation of External Wall Insulation (EWI) to properties across the County Borough.

The cladding used to refurbish Grenfell Tower was a ventilated rainscreen system and not an insulated render/brick slip system used by the Council.

All EWI systems used by the Council have been subjected to in depth testing, including fire testing, through the BBA (British Board of Agrément) and the BRE (British Research Establishment) and comply with British Standards and current Building Regulations. It is for these reasons that the Council has used these materials.

Wrexham Playday 2017 Wrexham will once again be celebrating National Playday with an event held in Wrexham town centre, on Wednesday 2nd August from 12pm to 4pm on Queen Square and Llwyn Isaf. Playday is for people of all ages including babies and toddlers, older children, teenagers, parents, professionals and grandparents, all are invited to join in this free and playful event.

The aim of this event is to highlight children’s right to play, encouraging people to recognise the value of playing to children, their families and their local communities.

Approximately 3,000 people visited our Playday event last year and we aim to make this year’s even bigger and better, but this can only happen if people come along and join in the fun. All we ask is that you bring along a playful mood and some clothes you don’t mind getting wet and messy. In the past families have brought picnics and stayed all afternoon!

Officers will form a strong part of the prison’s rehabilitative culture, and also set the standards expected by other recruits and the men at the prison. They need to be able to be supportive, but also be firm when needed.

Successful applicants will join a strong team of officers, all of whom were in place when HMP Berwyn opened earlier this year.

Overton Twinners Looking Forward to the Arrival of French Visitors Overton Twinners are looking forward to the arrival on 23rd July of 19 French visitors, ranging in age from 8 to early 70s, from our twinned village of La Murette. We are lucky enough to be able to hire the Scout Hut for the week to be the focus for activities.

The programme includes a village treasure hunt, visits to Chirk Castle, Chester Falconry, Llangollen and Dinas Bran, Snowdon for the keenest and Ellesmere for more leisurely strolling, and a Fieldfare-style afternoon in Cloy Lane.

New Service Launched in Wrexham to Offer a Companionship Lifeline Experiencing a life-threatening illness herself and helping a friend through difficult times planted the seed of an idea for a Wrexham woman who has launched a brand new service for local people in need of a helping hand.

Cathy Boardman, who developed breast cancer in 2010 has founded ‘Your Trusted Friend’, aimed at people of all ages who need someone to give them time and a friendly face, whether it be for a cup of tea and a chat, help with shopping, getting to appointments, visiting family and friends, walking a dog, help prepare a meal, sitting down together to do a crossword or simply telephoning to check all is well.

Cathy has a team of four, each with a background in either nursing or with experience of caring for others, Cathy has developed what she hopes is a service model with a difference. She explains: “We know that there are many people in the Wrexham area feeling lonely or isolated and struggling with life’s pressures, whether it be through illness, bereavement, old age, mobility or any number of other factors affecting them day to day. There can be times in our lives when we are not always able to do the things we used to do and we may need a helping hand.

“People need support when it suits them and want to build a relationship of trust with the same person every time as far as is possible so we make sure our service is flexible to ensure we are there exactly when we are needed.

“So often the small things are the big things. We are not professional carers; ours is a simple and straightforward service aiming to bring a smile, some company and happiness into the lives of others. Having someone to share time with and to call if we need help, or are struggling to cope, can mean the world to those who are on their own. We know from early feedback how important this is proving for people in our community, helping them to live better, more fulfilling lives and reducing stress.”
