Wellbeing Trends for 2020

By EssentialsMAG motivation contributor SASHA KENNEY A lot has changed during last year. Amongst other things, the word ‘wellness’ has pretty much died. I think ‘well-being’ killed it, while it became the word on everyone’s lips itself.

In fact, I bet you have talked about it recently, and I am certain that these are some of the things you are going to be talking about with your friends, family, and doctors in 2020: ‘Rest and boredom’ as the new magic pill More and more, we are waking up to the fact that chronic, prolonged stress - while common - isn't normal, which is why we all need to start to rethink ‘rest-time’ as, in fact, productive time.

‘Dopamine fasting’ is a trendy term Dopamine fasting will become trendy. The term has really taken off in Silicon Valley, but it has its roots in something experts have been talking about forever: digital detoxing.

So, expect more ‘airplane mode’ in the name of good mental health.

‘Anti-aging’ will be left behind We will leave the term ‘anti-aging’ in 2019, where it belongs. We are no longer fighting the external signs of aging; we are slowing the internal signs. It's time to start talking about healthy aging and how to optimize your body for the long term.

‘True’ well-being These days it's easy to confuse wellbeing with green juices and expensive yoga studios. However, it is now more important than ever before, that we go back to the very basic of health: real food, consistent movement and mindfulness.

The message this year is: Keep it simple, look after yourself, long term.

Growing Up With Technology

By EssentialsMAG tech contributor DAVID HUGHES Our daughter is reaching an age where technology is playing a bigger and bigger role in her life. This is inevitable and a little scary, but we are determined as parents to make it a positive experience, whilst also maintaining control.

A few years ago, I came across a fantastic article by technophile and artist, Cameron Moll (search “A mobile phone contract for our teenage son” to find it). We adapted his “contract” - itself based on a few others to suit our needs, and shared the following 10 points with our daughter when we bought her an iPod. 1. Whilst you live in our house, the final say on all technology lies with Mum and Dad. We can ask to see your devices at any time, check your history, or ask you to enter passwords, whenever we feel it is necessary to do so.

2. Create, don’t just consume. Don’t just mindlessly take on the ideas and opinions of others without having your own. Contribute to the conversation, and leave a digital footprint you can be proud of.

3. The real world will always be better than an Instagram post or a YouTube video.

4. You wouldn’t mask your identity in real life, so don’t do it online either.

Whenever possible, use your full name when you sign-up for things. When people know who you really are, it’s much easier to keep your online behaviour in check.

5. Remember that technology works for us, not the other way around.

Be the master of the technology you own, whatever it is.

6. Never text, email or say anything to someone through technology that you wouldn’t say to their face.

7. If you come across inappropriate photos or videos, do not share them.

Delete them, close the application, and ask Mum or Dad for advice.

8. Related to this, only share something if you are happy for anyone to see it, now or in the future. Remember, once shared it exists forever.

9. Alway live in reality. Don’t divide your attention between technology and those around you. Respect those who are in your presence, and demonstrate self-discipline and etiquette at social events.

10. You will make mistakes. Mum and Dad will always be available to listen and to help you learn from your mistakes.

Please give us the opportunity to help you make the most of technology and use it to make the world a better place.

I hope these points inspire you - as parents, grandparents or guardians - to come up with your own guidelines when introducing the younger generation to technology.

Gardening Tips and Advice January - Often the Coldest Month January might be the middle of winter but as the days lengthen the garden starts to grow.

Now is a great time to plan for the coming gardening year and to order seeds and plants.

Enjoy the fresh air, on dry sunny days, and check your winter protection, stakes, ties and supports are still working after any severe weather. Also put out food for birds and leave some garden areas uncut, a little longer, to provide shelter for wildlife in your garden.

No Need For Self-Sabotage

I am sure, just like me, you have eaten more food than you needed, too much drink and a lot less time keeping fit - THIS IS FINE! The bottom line is - we are allowed to enjoy this time of the year. For a lot of people, it’s the time we get to spend with family and friends.

But give yourself one mission for the new year, not to self-sabotage…!

Meaning simply - if you’ve had a good run prior to Christmas then you are doing good. We can pick it back up and keep focused by following a few simple steps: Work out your BMR Basal metabolic rate (BMR) is the number of calories required to keep your body functioning at rest. You use energy no matter what you're doing, even when sleeping. If you type in ‘BMR Calculator‘ into your search engine you can calculate your BMR; the number of calories you'd burn if you stayed in bed all day.

Do not be scared of the scales!

Scales be an accelerator to the self sabotage approach. Only use the scales as a reminder of your BMR and that’s all. Jump on them when you feel comfortable to do so, as long as you stick to a deficit you will be fine.

Keep to a simple workout plan I know I mention this a lot, but a simple 20 minute HIIT session can be enough to keep you fighting fit. Search ‘Joe wicks HIIT’ on YouTube where you have lots of choice from beginner to advance videos.

A bit of motivation Next year I will be doing a charity challenge for Claire House Hospice trying to raise as much money as possible by completing an Olympic triathlon for the whole month of May. I have been lucky to have a chat with a man who has set some serious challenges - a man called James Lawrence, AKA the Iron Cowboy (google him). James completed 50 ironman triathlons in 50 days in 50 states in the US. The messages between us have been inspiring and have helped me decide to say YES to the challenge. When I asked him for a short sentence to motivate his answer was pure James: “Get off your entitled ass and do the work.”

I think sometimes we need to appreciate we have less excuses compared to people in other countries - so let’s get out and make the most of it!

Restaurant Review Nags Head Lavister

I am officially over drinking gin and tonic out of receptacles that can comfortably fit my entire head inside them. So, when arriving at The Nag’s Head and being presented with a classy little cut crystal number in place of a giant fishbowl on a precarious stem, I was immediately delighted.

In addition to their exceptional glassware choices, this cosy country pub emits a genuinely welcoming warmth. The hub of the pub revolves around the most important section – the bar – which, despite being one of the smallest areas in the restaurant, is of course the busiest.

I think we have a natural instinct as humans to gather around the most obvious source of food and drink. My kitchen is one of the smallest rooms in my house and yet when I host parties, my guests always take it upon themselves to ignore every other available space and instead, instigate human tetris in the kitchen. This has inevitably resulted in many a smashed item, which, disappointingly, has never included any of my balloon glasses.

As my good friend, Tim, and I are shown to our table by our wonderful waiter, Andrei, the atmosphere seamlessly transforms itself from

bustling pub to relaxing restaurant. A high wooden beamed ceiling, soft cream colours and plaid furnishings encourage a countryside cosiness that is also reflected in their hearty and traditional menu. I begin with one of my all-time favourite flavour combos: goat’s cheese, beetroot, walnut and balsamic.

Billed as a ‘Goat’s Cheese Crouton’, I wasn’t too sure what to expect with this dish and I was also intrigued by the Mediterranean addition of olives amongst an otherwise classically composed starter. The ‘crouton’ element was a circular piece of toast upon which the goat’s cheese was baked. The goat’s cheese itself was tangy and blistered with golden bubbles of caramelisation, although I’d have liked a slightly more substantial slice of it! The creamy, crunchy walnuts; earthy beetroot; and sharp balsamic vinegar were dreamy teammates.

Tim went for a classic: Scallops with Black Pudding, Pancetta and Pea Puree. This is another timeless combination of flavours, which overall, was very well executed. The scallops were well cooked, with a caramelised crust and translucent centre – and the roe was still attached, which enabled another welcome wave of ocean fresh flavour to flood in. The Bury black pudding was soft and smoky, the pancetta was crisp and salty, and the pea puree was silky smooth. Again, this was

a very pleasant dish indeed, and some key components were very well delivered.

The Nag’s Head is teetering on the edge of glory. The service is attentive, the atmosphere is vibrant, the prices are reasonable, and the food is delicious.

This a genuine gem of a joint in a great location and there is a lot that is very right about what they’re doing (no political persuasions intended…).

Offering up locally brewed cask ales, tempting mid-week specials, a beautifully warm welcome and hearty plates of homemade goodness; I suggest you kick start your new year by taking the Nag by the tail and paying them - and their balloon glass-less bar - a visit.

EssentialsMAG Tasty Recipe

Grilled Sea Bass Fillets & Saffron Potatoes SERVES 4

INGREDIENTS 4 sea bass fillets

1 tsp turmeric

12 new potatoes, peeled

pinch of sea salt (or table salt)

100g samphire

½ lemon

½ shallot

Welsh cold pressed rapeseed oil

6 ripe cherry tomatoes

Capers

Pinch of saffron

Fresh basil

METHOD Peel new potatoes, bring water to rolling boil, add a pinch of saffron, turmeric and sea salt. Boil until tender, remove from cooking liquid and leave to cool.

Do not throw the water away as you will need it later.

For the sauce vierge Finely dice ½ shallot, quarter 6 cherry tomatoes, ½ grated lemon zest and juice.

Add together with Welsh cold pressed rapeseed oil to make the dressing.

This sauce is served at room temperature and does not require any cooking.

Score the skin side of the sea bass 2 or 3 times, this helps to allow steam to escape from the fish to create a crispy skin. Lightly oil and season an oven tray, place the fish skin side down on the oil, then turn the fish over so both sides are seasoned.

Reheat the saffron potatoes in boiling water, when hot remove and keep warm.

Place the sea bass under a medium/high heat grill, keep an eye on it, you want the skin to evenly colour, but not burn, cooking of the bass will only take 5-6 minutes.

In the same water as the potatoes where warmed in, drop the samphire in to cook. This only takes 15-20 seconds.

Add chopped fresh basil and capers to the sauce vierge and season to taste.

Place the samphire, saffron potatoes and grilled sea bass onto a warm plate.

Drizzle the sauce vierge on and around the fish and enjoy!

Counselling Advice FAQ: Teen Behaviour

By EssentialsMAG mental health & well-being contributor KIM PATEL QUESTION: I just can’t seem to be able to talk to my teen any more. It doesn’t seem to matter what I say to them, they blow up and overreact. I’m at my wits end, what can I do?

ANSWER: Parenting teenagers in this high-pressured, technologically-driven world is extremely challenging. Teen behaviour is the result of the mind, brain, emotions, hormones, genes, immunity and behaviour working synergistically. During the teenage years (10-24 years), the brain cortex (the thinking, rational and logical part of the brain) is undergoing a huge period of restructuring and goes ‘off-line’. This means that your teen is acting from the emotional/limbic part of the brain. The difficulty with operating from this emotional brain is that less stimuli is needed to provoke an emotional response, the emotional response lasts much longer and they have difficulty processing these intense emotions (anger, sadness, etc.). Unlike (most) adults, therefore, teens are not yet competent at self-regulating their emotions.

For example, emotional self-regulation in an adult may look like this: the adult may be in a stressful situation which initiates the fight-flight response and the release of adrenaline and cortisol. When that situation has passed, their biochemistry settles back to its baseline with the release of serotonin, dopamine and oxytocin which makes them feel calm again.

Adults also have the benefit of experience and the cognitive capacity to respond more effectively than teens to emotional situations.

Communicating with teens can often be a flashpoint since your teen is responding from their emotional (limbic) brain. Our response can take one of two forms - the knee-jerk reaction to become irritated, angry or upset in response to our teen and respond accordingly. Or we can respond with awareness; this is not a personal attack. Rather, teenage behaviour is a temporary, subconscious reaction to their experiences.

Janey Downshire and Naella Grew in ‘Teenagers Translated: How to Raise Happy Teens’ suggest giving yourself six seconds before responding. Remember - your confrontation escalates their tension, your tension raises their anxiety levels, and your fear fuels their aggression. Becoming aware of how you feel will help you to choose how to respond helpfully. Apologising when you have overreacted or said the wrong thing will also help to defuse your teen’s over-reactive limbic brain. Finally, avoid getting sucked into a blame game as this just prolongs ill-feeling.

However, inappropriate behaviour should not be tolerated in your teen!

Food For Thought

By EssentialsMAG environment contributor ROB RENOUF January is often the time for diets, detox and new exercise regimes following the “over indulgences” of the festive period.

We’re increasingly aware of how the things we eat and drink impact directly on our health and wellbeing. However, more attention is now being paid to how they affect the planet (and us as a result). Whilst it’s true that becoming a vegan is one of the best ways to reduce our environmental impact, it’s not the only option.

Reduce meat and dairy consumption.

This can make a big difference, even if we’re not ready to give up animal products completely. Meat production is a relatively inefficient way of gaining the nutrition we need. As a general rule, more resources such as land and water are needed to produce meat than plant-based alternatives. However, this does vary dependent on the type of food and the farming methods used. Red meat and dairy produce are some of the best things to cut back on.

Buy local produce. This helps reduce the environmental impact of transporting it to us. The worst items we can buy are those flown in on a plane; using ships produces much lower levels of emissions. People often associate doing the right thing for the planet with making sacrifices or managing without things, but this isn’t necessarily the case - I’d certainly recommend buying beer from a local producer like the Magic Dragon Brewery over imported alternatives!

Buy seasonal produce.

It’s not always as simple as going for the item produced closest to home. Something out of season produced in a heated polytunnel may actually have a larger carbon footprint than if it was grown outdoors in a warmer country. Fruit and vegetables that are in season and local will be at their absolute best, and eating seasonally is a great way to help keep our diets varied and interesting.

Avoid packaging where possible.

This links in with the previous issues, as additional packaging can be required to survive long journeys. Meat usually comes in plastic packaging, although thankfully non-recyclable black plastic is now being phased out. If we’re buying meat, increasing numbers of local suppliers are willing to put it into our own reusable containers.

Buy organic.

Produced without using chemicals that are harmful to the environment.

Why You Should Make a Will

With that in mind, how often have we made New Year’s resolutions that are usually forgotten within 24 hours after the champagne and fireworks have fizzled? However, there is one resolution that should not be forgotten - especially if you own property or have children.

Have you been promising yourself you will make a Will this year?

If you are like 70% of the population and don't have a Will the consequences for your loved ones can result in: • • • •

Loss of control of your estate.

Sideways disinheritance.

No funeral wishes been recorded.

No instructions for the distribution of your estate.

EXAMPLE: If a couple with children from previous relationships marry, then one adult passes away, without a Will the surviving spouse inherits the estate and therefore any children on the deceased side are disinherited.

By making a Will your loved ones benefit by having Executors appointed by you to distribute your estate and having the powers assigned to them along with: • Appointing guardians for any children aged under 18.

• Electing who shall and shall not benefit from your estate and in what portion.

• Details of any specific legacies (not always financial).

• Specify any funeral arrangements.

• Who will administer your estate.

EXAMPLE: If we use the same example as before, a couple with children marry, one adult passes away. They have made a Will which states their part of the estate is to be distributed between the surviving spouse and all their children.

If you already have a Will, congratulations!

You join a select number of the population, but please check to make sure your Will is still up- to-date, correctly signed and witnessed.

If you are a business owner there is an even greater responsibility to make a Will to ensure the continuity of your business and its employees. With the use of Trusts, estates can be further protected.

Unfortunately, one thing is certain, we all pass away at some point. Whilst we can’t determine when, we can make sure that plans are in place to ensure our families have stability and peace of mind.

Nordic Walking Are you ready for a change? Nordic Walking is the new sport, for The New Year, for the new you! Nordic Walking is a relatively new sport in the UK and it’s growing in popularity at a fast pace, much like the nature of this style of walking itself.

What is it you may ask?

I describe Nordic Walking as ‘active or purposeful’ walking. The use of poles engage the muscles in the upper body and arms and aid in propelling the walker forward. When the technique is carried out correctly it’s an all over body workout using 90% of the skeletal muscle, making it a highly effective form of exercise and weight-loss.

What I love about Nordic Walking?

It’s so accessible, anyone who can walk can Nordic Walk. It is great for weight-loss as it burns twice as many calories as regular walking and sustains a longer fat burn than running.

It is also great for posture, as it opens up the chest and straightens the spine. This is advantageous into days world where so many of us spend much of our time slumped over computer desks and mobile phones.

Being sociable, Nordic Walking in small groups gives you the opportunity to meet new people with a common interest, make new friends and share stories along the way. Each walk is a new experience, in a new location in all manner of weathers throughout the year.

After all, there’s nothing us brits like to discuss more than the weather! Being outdoors in nature when Nordic Walking you get your daily fix of sunlight keeping your Vitamin D levels topped up which has many wonderful health benefits, particularly keeping SAD syndrome at bay. Wilderness therapy is now a prescribed treatment for improved mental health. Enjoying the fresh air, taking in the beautiful views, watching the seasons change and being more connected with nature makes us feel alive!

When can I expect to see the results? You should see the results almost instantly. Your skin will feel firmer, hydrated and restored with a more youthful look.

Are fillers just the same as Botox? No – there’s a distinct difference - Botox stops your muscles contracting and creating fine lines. Fillers plump from below an established wrinkle that you need smoothing out.

Does it hurt? No! The needle is so small that you don’t feel any pain. Slight discomfort can be reduced by having anaesthetic cream applied before treatment.

How long does it last? Like all aesthetics treatments, the results differ for everyone.

Most dermal fillers will last 6-12 months and wear off slowly as they are biodegradable.

Many animals that we take in have either suffered or are not used to the care and affection that they deserved. Living with a foster family helps to provide them with one-to-one care.

Allowing them to build up their confidence and get used to a normal lifestyle. Other animals don't cope well in an animal centre environment. This is where we need people to take them in to provide them with a real home, even if it is only temporary.

Benefits to people Fostering animals can also be a pleasurable experience. It’s rewarding to know that you played a key part in the rehoming process when a foster animal is successfully rehomed. It also gives people who would normally be unable to take in an animal long term due to other commitments, with an alternative.

Different types of fostering There are three types of animal fostering roles: • Fosterers for animals ready to be rehomed.

• Fosterers for case animals whilst the legal proceedings take place.

• All fosterers are responsible for the welfare of the animal in their care.
