One way is to have your milk delivered in glass bottles which is having a nation-wide resurgence.

This leads nicely to our Everyday Life, Admirable People spotlight featuring the lovely family-run business Edwards Dairy in Chirk. They have been operating since 1961, and the business has passed from father to son down the generations. They still deliver milk in glass bottles to over 2,000 homes in the area, which not only helps the environment, it supports the local dairy farmers too.

How to Become More Resilient

Often, we are told by friends, ‘Be strong, you’ll get through this’, or ‘You need to be more resilient’ but what does that really mean, and how can we achieve it in a practical sense?

What is resilience? Resilience is the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties. It is also referred to as mental toughness. In essence, being resilient means being able to adapt and bounce back when something difficult happens in our lives. It is the ability to once again pick ourselves up and be even stronger than we were before the trauma, stressful or painful experience.

How can we develop more resilience? There are several ways that we can develop more resilience to difficult or stressful events.

Here are the main seven pillars of resilience, also called ‘The SMASHER’s.”

Self Care. Looking after ourselves well is fundamental when we talk about resilience.

There are three essentials: eat seasonably, exercise often and sleep well.

Mindfulness. This seems to be the new buzz word. What is really means is that we live in the ‘now’; that your mind is fully attending to what is happening, to what you are doing.

Attitude. Realising it is not always your fault is of essence here. Too often we blame ourselves even though we couldn’t do anything to change the situation. In addition, remaining positive and being aware of the fact that nothing is permanent is also crucial. Everything will pass. Bad times too.

Silliness. Every time you find humour in a difficult situation, you win.

Hardiness. Research has found that putting all your eggs in one basket is not good for your mental toughness. Having three or four different interests, hobbies or passions will make you more hardy than just focusing on one single thing, e.g. work or family all of the time. Maybe try something new this month?

Emotional acceptance. Accepting what ‘is’ and giving yourself freedom to experience negative emotions is key to building resilience. It is ok not to feel on the top of the world all the time.

Relationships. If you were going to invest your time in one single thing, let it be good, meaningful relationships. That’s what makes a good life!

If you can ‘smash’ these seven “SMASHER’s”, you are on the way to becoming more resilient. Pass it on and have a great month!

Viv Lavis Jones Bangor-on-Dee History Farmers on the move In February 1932 a Wrexham newspaper reported that several local farmers were on the move from their farms in Bangor and outlying districts. Royton Farm, the largest farm on Major Hugh Peel's Brynypys estate, was losing its tenant Mr Robert Feamall. He was born at Royton in 1877 and succeeded, as tenant on the death of his father Thomas Feamall, who came from Wallington Farm, Worthenbury to farm Royton and for fourteen years had been a church warden and a school manager.

Robert Fearnall and his wife were well known for their friendliness and kind-hearted hospitality such as at Brynypys coursing meetings that were regularly held on their land when they made sure that everyone went home happy and contented. Robert was appointed to represent the district on the River Dee Drainage Board in 1926. The villagers of Bangor had much to thank Robert Feamall for; he let them use part of the field known as the Groeth, across the river opposite the church, as a cricket pitch and bowling green and allowed them to erect a pavilion. He also let the Bangor Horticultural Show and Fete, which had begun as a small affair in the schoolroom, to hold their annual event in a large marquee on the same field for some years so that many came to regard the field as belonging to the village. On the outbreak of the Second World War when the call went out for everyone to make full use of all land for food production, the field was ploughed and Bangor lost its recreation ground.

One of Robert's sisters, Fanny, married Frank Lloyd the auctioneer of Eyton House and another, Florence, married Harry Nuttall who worked for he same firm of auctioneers.

His youngest sister married William Owen of Ellesmere. Robert Feamall decided to retire to the smaller farm of Gwrych-teg, Kiln Lane, Cross Lanes owned by Sir Watkin Williams Wynn, the previous tenant of which was Mr William Dickin of the firm Frank Lloyd and sons, auctioneers.

Mr Massie Piggot, who was connected with the Feamall family, was also leaving the Glandeg Farm in the parish of Worthenbury on Mr John Howard's estate of Broughton Hall. Before he came to Glandeg he farmed at Shocklach Hall with his father, Joseph Piggott. He had always been a keen follower to Sir W. W. Wynn's hounds and was a fine point-to-point rider with many wins to his name in various parts of the country. He and his wife were going to live near Leominster not far from Mr Fred Cheetham formerly of Porthygan Farm. One farmer going to live in the Bangor area was the former licensee of the Plough Inn, Isycoed, farmer, rate collector and parish clerk, Herbert Stokes. He and his family were taking up residence at The Twll Farm, Pickhill, for many years the home of Mrs Brookfield who famously beat off burglars with a poker when nearly eighty years old.

A Taste of Eastern Canada Anita Kelsey is a finalist in the UK’s Best Canada Specialist Travel Agent award this year and recently visited Eastern Canada to further her knowledge. In this article, she reflects on her journey and shares some of the highlights.

Ottawa is Canada’s capital city and cultural centre. A mixture of British and French cultures, the city has a cosmopolitan vibe that celebrates Canada’s achievements with historical sites, festivals, and cultural attractions. Downtown Ottawa houses Canada’s Parliament Hill, whose buildings may remind you of our British Parliament.

In the summer you can witness the Changing of the Guard each morning and the free Sound and Light Show every night projects stories about the history of Canada onto the Parliament Buildings.

During my time in Ottawa I visited the National Gallery of Canada, housing the largest display of Canadian art in the world, including stunning Inuit and Aboriginal pieces. The Canadian Museum of Nature houses some world class galleries showcasing iconic mammals, dinosaur fossils, a blue whale skeleton, Arctic Gallery and much more. The Canadian Museum of History is situated on the opposite side of the Ottawa River and has lovely views.

This beautiful modern building incorporates a 40,000 square feet History Hall tracing Canada’s history from the dawn of human habitation to the present day.

One of the highlights of my stay was cruising along the mighty Ottawa River and seeing the city from a completely different

angle: brought to life by an informative commentary from our Capital Cruises guide. Another was a bike tour along the scenic Rideau Canal, a beautiful and interesting UNESCO world heritage site.

I also visited By Ward Market where I tried Beavertails - a deep fried flat doughnut with a variety of toppings - and wandered around the market stalls, which sell various goods including maple syrup, lollipops, fudge, maple butter, soap and much more!

My next stop was Canada’s first Capital, Kingston - an easy drive of 120 miles from Ottawa. Situated on the St Lawrence River where the 1,000 Islands begin - scenic boat tours are available that entertain visitors with stories of the region’s chequered past, as they glide through the calm waters.

The sightseeing hop-on hop-off trolley tour - with their experienced guides is a great way of seeing the top attractions.

I visited Historic Fort Henry - built by the British during the War of 1812 - and enjoyed a glimpse into the realm of 18th Century military life, with entertaining guides in period costume. Very interesting and highly recommended is Kingston Penitentiary which only closed in 2013 and now allows visitors a glimpse into a high security prison, in the company of the very guards that worked there.

But my absolute highlight has to be the helicopter tour over the 1,000 Islands, which gives you a completely different perspective.

As for outdoor leisure activities, there are 30 public golf courses in the area as well as kayaking, biking, horseback riding, canoeing, fishing opportunities and scuba diving among the many shipwrecks in the region.

Lots to keep even the most active visitor happy!

This lovely town with its 19th-Century limestone architecture made me want to stay longer to explore its historical sites or just relax and enjoy the beautiful setting - a perfect place to ‘chill out’ after a busy flydrive itinerary.

Three hours away is Toronto, Canada’s largest city and most visited destination. There is too much to say about this vibrant city so it will have to wait until another time…

Eight Easy Ways to Reduce Your Personal Plastic Footprint We’ve all seen the headlines about the huge environmental problems caused by single-use plastics, but what can we do to cut down our personal plastic footprints?

Carry a reusable bottle In the UK we use over 35 million plastic bottles every year! Carrying a reusable bottle is a great way to cut your plastic use and save money too!

Say no to plastic straws Plastic straws are bad news for our oceans.

Next time you order a drink, think about whether you need a straw – and if you don’t, just say no! You can also ask your local pub to stop adding straws to drinks as standard and offer paper straws to those who want one.

Take a reusable coffee cup 2.5 billion coffee cups are thrown away every year in the UK – and less than 1 in 400 are recycled. Carry a reusable cup with you – some cafes even offer a small discount if you use your own cup.

Avoid excessive food packaging Whether it’s making different choices in the supermarket or choosing a different place to shop, we can all try and cut down the plastic we buy. And as an added bonus, loose fruit and veg is often cheaper than pre-packaged alternatives!

Say no to disposable cutlery We’ve all been there – caught out in a cafe or at a train station when we’ve bought a salad or a yogurt but the only cutlery on offer is plastic! Whilst it’s hard to plan for every opportunity, consider carrying a spoon or fork (or spork!) in your bag or keeping cutlery in your desk at work.

Avoid microbeads The good news is that the UK government have announced a ban on microbeads!

However until the ban comes into force later in 2018, there will still be products on the shelves, so keep checking those labels before you buy and avoid products containing polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and nylon.

Carry a shopping bag Many of us are used to carrying an extra bag with us – if you still find it hard to remember, try a foldaway one that you can carry in your normal day bag.

Tartiflette - French-style cheesy potato bake INGREDIENTS

Serves: 4

1kg/2lb 4oz Charlotte potatoes, peeled 250g/8oz bacon lardons 2 shallots 1 garlic clove 100ml/3½fl oz white wine 200ml/7fl oz double cream sea salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 whole Reblochon cheese (about 450g/1lb), sliced

METHOD For the tartiflette, preheat oven to 200C/400F/Gas 7.

Cook the potatoes in a saucepan of salted boiling water for 5-10 minutes, or until tender.

Drain and set aside to cool slightly.

Meanwhile, heat a frying pan until hot and fry the bacon, shallots and garlic for 4-5 minutes, or until golden-brown. Deglaze the pan with the white wine and continue to cook until most of the liquid has evaporated.

Slice the potatoes thinly and layer into an ovenproof gratin dish with the bacon mixture. Pour over the double cream. Season with salt and lots of freshly ground black pepper. Layer the Reblochon slices on top.

Bake in the oven for 10-15 minutes or until the cheese is golden-brown and bubbling.

Local Police Advice Keeping North Wales Safe Report by PCSO Lynne Maurice I would like to start this month by making you aware that there have been a few thefts/burglaries in some of our rural areas over the last couple of months, this includes tools stolen from work vehicles, shed break-ins, theft of quad bikes, off road bikes, chains saws etc. Please be vigilant and keep your property/possessions safe.

Whilst crime doesn’t happen too often, it can be distressing when it does. Nearly all crime is opportunistic - an open window or unlocked door, a purse sticking out of a handbag etc. If we remove the opportunity for crime to happen, criminals will have to look elsewhere. You can avoid being a victim and help to reduce crime by taking care of your property, having sufficient security measures in place and by being vigilant when out and about. IF IT CAN BE SEEN, IT CAN BE STOLEN. Your possessions are valuable to you but to a thief they are just another way of making easy cash. If stolen, you may be able to replace your TV, games console etc, but do you own things that would be impossible to replace? These might include items of sentimental value. Why not think of taking photos of your property, this will not only help describe them but also help prove their existence and your ownership in the event of a theft.

Every year, property worth hundreds of thousands of pounds is recovered by the police and not returned to its rightful owners. This is simply because it can’t properly be identified. Why not mark your property. Engraving or etching is suitable for many hard surfaces and can be done using an electric tool or a hand engraver.

This method leaves a permanent visible mark. An ultra-violet (UV) pen can put an invisible mark on your property, which can only be seen by using a UV lamp. Only use UV marking when other methods would reduce the value of the object. There are many ways to mark your property, this is just a couple of examples. If you need any further information as regards this, please do not hesitate to contact us, or pop in to see us at Overton Police Station.

Another subject I would like to bring up, yet again, is dog fouling. Whilst out and about recently I’ve seen quite a few areas, especially in Marchwiel, and reports in Bangor on Dee, which are really bad with this problem. You all know by now the consequences of not cleaning up after your dog, you will be caught out sometime, so please take pride in your villages and pick up after your animal. They are your responsibility so do the right thing.

Unravelling the Mystery of Lines and Wrinkles

By EssentialsMAG skincare contributor LAURA RANSOME Do you have lines and wrinkles but are unsure what treatment you need? This is a brief introduction to explain the differences between the popular treatment Botox and dermal filler treatments offered at Clinic No 8.

Botox, Bocouture, Azzalure, are all brand names of a medicine called botulinum toxin. It is a natural, purified protein which works by relaxing facial muscles, reducing activity that causes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. The frown area, forehead and crows feet are the most common areas to be treated.

Botulinum toxin injections are relatively safe and effective treatments and are the number one most popular non-surgical procedure according to saveface.co.uk (2015). The treatment takes approximately 20 minutes and there is no real downtime.

Results aren’t instant, it can take 3-5 days to see initial results and up to 3 weeks to see the full effect. Generally these results can last between 3-4 months, depending on the client.

Dermal Fillers are an injectable substance containing hyaluronic acid which is a naturally occurring carbohydrate found within the tissues. As we age we lose volume and density in our tissues which creates lines and wrinkles in our face.

Dermal fillers can be used to soften these lines, restore lost

volume and hydrate the skin. Some of the common areas to be treated are lips, nose to mouth lines, marionettes and cheeks.

According to saveface.co.uk (2015) dermal fillers are the second most common non surgical procedures. This is because they can create comparable results to that of surgical facelifts without the long downtime. The procedure takes around 45-60 minutes. Results can last from 6-12 months depending on the area treated and life style factors.

Both botulinum toxin and dermal filler treatments require a face-to-face consultation to ask you about your medical history and discuss your expectations. We then recommend a procedures that would best suit your needs. This also allows you to obtain all the information you need to make a full and informed decision about your aesthetic treatments.

This month’s spotlight is on Edwards Dairy In 1961 Winston Edwards set up his first milk round from an old fridge at the Old Cross Keys Inn at Chirk. Winston used an Austin A55 van to deliver around the Chirk area and soon built-up the business enough to buy his own yard at Whitehurst, Chirk.

At the age of 14 Winston’s son Martin joined the dairy, first part-time while still at school, then going full-time at the age of 16. Father and son worked well together and began buying up milk rounds from retiring milkmen in the St. Martins and Chrik area.

A few years later the tradition repeated when Martin’s son Louis joined the company – starting as a van lad, just as his father and grandfather had done.

When Louis turned 16 he joined the dairy full-time, becoming the third generation to deliver the daily pint. At 18 Louis was made a partner and ever since he has continued to expand and grow the business.

Fast forward 57 years, Edwards Dairy has grown to employ nine delivery drivers and five office staff. They supply more than

2,000 doorsteps from Oswestry and Chirk through Wrexham and right up to the Chester area. They also supply local business including hotels, factories, shops and restaurants.

Despite the rise of supermarkets, Edwards Dairy has kept going strong by looking after its customers and branching out to deliver other items such as local meats, eggs, vegetables, bread and a wide variety of dairy produce. They currently stock more than 500 products available to order straight to the customer’s door.

Stop smoking. Smoking is a major contributory factor in coronary heart disease. A year after giving up, your risk of a heart attack falls to about half of that of a smoker. Speak to your GP for advice and support.

Get active. Your heart is a muscle and just like other muscles, needs exercise. Every heartbeat pumps blood around the body, so a strong, fit heart can pump blood much more efficiently. You don't have to exhaust yourself - a good brisk walk, take the stairs rather than the lift, dance to keep fit, find an exercise class that you like. Aim for 20-30 minutes of moderate activity every day. You'll feel so muck better for it.

Manage your stress levels. Stress can affect your sleep patterns, can cause you to drink and eat too much , and could sabotage your efforts to give up smoking or regularly exercise. Pilates, yoga and meditation can all help to manage those sensations of overwhelm. If necessary, speak to your GP for advice.

Watch your diet and weight. Increasing your fibre, water intake, fresh vegetables and fruit, whole grains and good quality fats, and reducing sugar, salt, starchy carbs, processed foods, saturated fats and alcohol. Excess weight can increase your risk of life-changing conditions such as coronary heart disease and diabetes. Start making small, manageable and healthy changes.

If you are looking to make your first home purchase or have an existing mortgage, with so much information in the press, on the TV and on the Internet, it can be a daunting prospect trying to make sure you get the best advice and of course the best deal.

First let's consider first time buyers We are often surprised that on occasions we see first time purchasers particularly accept almost the first deal they are offered. Why? Always shop around would be our recommendation. Many young buyers are committing to a loan for 25 or 30 years and it simply must be worth spending a little time making sure that you have the very best deal for such a large commitment. The focus is understandably on 'buying the house' which is the exciting bit.

In truth you are also 'buying a mortgage' - so use a broker who is able to look at the WHOLE OF THE MARKET to get the very best deal that's out there for you.

Firstly, understanding how much you can borrow, the repayment program (how much you will pay each year at the start and after any discount period) and of course the flexibility of the loan are all important factors.

The rate being charged, the monthly repayment and of course the fees for each deal need to be fully understood to help you make the right choice.

Today we have new ‘intergenerational' mortgages available. Sometimes purchasers have been able to rely on the help of ‘the bank of mum and dad’ to raise a better deposit.

More recently younger buyers have been able to obtain the mortgage deal required by using a parents income to support their own income to secure the new home. Plenty to consider.

Moving on to those of you with existing mortgages - well let's be honest, it really has been a decade of exceptionally low rate deals.

Have you, or more importantly are you going to, make the most of what's available? If you currently have a mortgage and have not reviewed the deal in the last 24 months with rates where they are at present - spending an hour with us could be lucrative.

We see clients looking to either reduce the monthly repayment and save some money every month (why not?) - or rebroker the deal to see if they can shorten the term of the loan by a few years. Being mortgage free a little earlier sounds good to me.

It's fair to say that nobody can predict with any real certainty where interest rates may be in say 5 or 10 years time. Not many would have predicted base lending rates at 0.5% or less for the last 9 years. Clearly for borrowers that's been great (a lot less great for savers) - and for any readers with a home loan outstanding you really should be taking advantage of those facts.

News from Wrexham County Council Take Part in the Great British Spring Clean Fancy organising a community spring clean in support of Keep Wales Tidy’s Great British Spring Clean? Pride in Telford’s Masterpiece We’re proud of our World Heritage Site and two new signs on key gateways into Wrexham on the A483 show just that.

News from Wrexham County Council Keep Snapping We’re Doing It Again!

Last year we held a competition to get photos to put together a Calendar that showcased some beautiful places in and around the county borough. The competition was very successful and we received some stunning photographs taken throughout the year of architecture and beauty spots around the county borough taken by amateur photographers. We eventually produced our Wonders of Wrexham Calendar 2018 and it went on sale in November, just in time for Christmas.

So many willing to take the time We’ve now had time to reflect on the success of the competition and that so many of you were willing to take the time to submit your entries for what wasn’t exactly a life changing prize of a personal copy of the Calendar. You’ve also asked us if we will be running the competition again and we’re pleased to say that yes we will but in a slightly different way.

This year there will be a single competition run during August and September with the theme concentrating again on all that’s beautiful and great in Wrexham. We have after all several recognised areas of outstanding natural beauty, three of the Wonders of Wales are here, two national trust properties and of course the magnificent Aqueduct at Pontcysyllte. And that’s just the start of it. We also have our country parks, brilliant architecture in our churches and old buildings, bridges, canals and of course the many waterways that flow through the county borough. Then there’s all those fantastic outdoor events – St David’s Day Parade, Play Day, Under the Arches which give great opportunities for good photographs. Any profits from the sale of the Calendar will once again be given to the Mayor’s charity fund.

Taken at any time of the year The images can be taken at any time of the year but they must be of somewhere in the county borough. 13 images will be included in the 2019 Calendar – one for the front cover and one for each month of the year. Please bear in mind the size of the images printed will be 295mm x 295mm and images should be cropped to this size or large enough to be cropped to this size.

All images submitted should have a minimum resolution of 300 dpi and the file formats that will be accepted are Tiff, Psd, Eps, Jpeg, High res pdf.

The Mayor of Wrexham, Cllr John Pritchard, welcomed the news that the competition will be run again: “It was an excellent idea to show everyone just what we have in Wrexham to be proud of. Beautiful architecture, some great views and what really came across was all that water! I’d like to thank all those who took part in the last competition and who bought a calendar and also encourage everyone to keep snapping and look out for when the competition opens for entries in August.”

To Move, or Not to Move? whitegates That is the Question!

Most of us reflect in the New Year and make plans for life changing goals, such as moving home, booking a holiday and considering career moves for the forthcoming year. As a result of these traditional New Year plans the team here at Whitegates Wrexham have been very busy valuing homes in January as people are inspired to take action.

From my experience, last year in and around Wrexham the market seemed strong and buoyant. This was especially true for starter homes and second move homes, despite a small interest rate rise, and of course Brexit looming. However, from what I can gather, the North had more of a promising prediction for 2018 with Northern hot spots a possibility. Could this include Wrexham?

At best guess, we’re working on more of the same for 2018, and looking at a healthy housing market for sales of starter and second mover homes, and a strong and healthy rental market too. So, it’s a great time to consider a move while the market is active.

The RSCPA receive more than 5,000 calls a year regarding litter. Unfortunately, wildlife is the main victim when it comes to these situations - wild birds in particular. Many injured wild animals are never found, so it’s estimated that the actual figure of animals injured by litter is much higher.

Everyday objects can become hazards Protecting animals from harmful rubbish is easy – dispose of your rubbish responsibly.

Balloons - Balloon releases threaten wildlife, even balloons marked as degradable may take a number of weeks to degrade, but it only takes a second for an animal to swallow a balloon.

Chinese lanterns - Also known as sky lanterns, can seriously injure animals.

Glass - Broken glass can cause serious injury and animals can get trapped in jars.

Be sure to clean and recycle glass to help prevent injuries.

Containers and cans - Animals looking for food can get trapped in cans or injured by sharp edges. To help prevent this clean and empty containers, pinch cans shut and cut cans in half and recycle where possible.

Elastic bands - These can wrap around small animals and beaks of birds. If swallowed they can cause choking. Reuse bands when possible or cut them open before putting in a bin.

Fishing tackle - responsible for the injury of thousands of wild animals every year.

Animals can get entangled in line and hooks which can pierce skin or be swallowed. Read our top tips for anglers and help promote responsible fishing.
