Bangor-on-Dee Village Hall Latest News This time last year our update in EssentialsMAG was positive in that new activities had taken up many of the slots previously filled by Playgroup. Most of these activities are still going well and as all of our groups welcome people from the surrounding villages we thought it would be useful to share this information with all EssentialsMAG readers.

Viv Lavis Jones Bangor-on-Dee History Attack on a Bangor licensee In March 1950 Mr Frank Cyril McVe, licensee of the Buck Hotel on returning to the hotel one afternoon found a window in the residents lounge broken, a locked bedroom door burst open and some jewellery missing.

On going upstairs he surprised an intruder hiding behind a pile of mattresses. A man wearing a scarf round his face sprang out brandishing a dagger and lunged at Mr McVe who quickly leapt back and went downstairs for help. He returned with assistance to find that the intruder was no longer in the room.

On searching downstairs and going into a room off the kitchen the masked man flung a dagger at him, which missed. He then seized a milk bottle and a jug and shouted 'Come and get me' One of the men with McVe, George Humphreys, then moved forward and struck the man on the chin. The intruder was Derek John Joseph Murphy, aged 21, of Bishop Street, Rochdale. McVe said that Murphy had been in the hotel since 11.45am and was drinking until 3pm and when he left the premises he was perfectly sober.

George Humphreys, coal merchant, of Station Road, Bangor said that he approached the hotel, outside which a crowd had gathered, and ascertained that there was a masked man with dagger inside. He entered the building and saw Murphy wearing a scarf round the lower part of his face and brandishing a milk bottle in one hand and a jug in the other. He immediately floored the man with a blow to the chin.

Police Constable R Edgington was called who arrested the man and questioned him about the incident. Murphy made the following statement: 'I spent a few hours today in the Buck Hotel, and being interested in jewellery I took the liberty of having a look round. The stuff I took was worthless, so I hung around waiting to find where the real stuff was.'

To Police Sergeant Lloyd Hughes of Wrexham Murphy said when questioned about the alleged dagger attack 'If I had not missed grabbing him the first time I would have knocked the daylight out of him'. He strenuously denied using or throwing a knife and pleaded not guilty to that offence. He was remanded to appear at the Flintshire Quarter Sessions.

At the Quarter Sessions in April Murphy pleaded guilty to breaking into the Buck Hotel and stealing jewellery worth ÂŁ10, 10s, but denied the allegations about the knife. He said the main reason for his criminal activities was inability to settle down to civilian life after service with the commandoes, and domestic trouble. Mr Justice Jones, presiding, said that no notice would be taken of the allegations about the knife and sentenced Murphy to three years corrective training.

Are you Suffering with some form of insomnia?

By EssentialsMAG wellbeing contributor FIONA BURMAN HOPKINS One in three in the UK suffer with some form of insomnia. Most help for insomnia focuses on how to get to sleep with various strategies for improving the chances of getting off to sleep, staying asleep and getting back to sleep if you wake during the night. These suggestions often encourage you to do ‘something’ but this very act of trying to get to sleep can have the reverse effect.

If you asked a person who sleeps well how they do it they will tell you that they do not do anything, sleep just happens without any trying. Of course every one has some episodes of disturbed sleep at some time in their lives. This is normal and can occur if you are particularly stressed or worried or have had some recent trauma or loss in your life. This type of insomnia resolves itself reasonably quickly and your usual sleeping habits return. Persistent chronic insomnia lasts for over three nights a week and for longer than three months. Many insomniacs feel that they are locked in a battle with sleep and this in itself creates more difficulties as the harder you try to go to sleep the more elusive it becomes.

Regular use of mindfulness and self hypnosis can be useful. Mindfulness can be used to simply accept the present moment instead of fighting with sleep.

Focusing on your breathing and being aware of the process of breathing is calming.

Anxiety and persistent negative thoughts are reduced, leading to an increased sense of calm and ease.

For self hypnosis imagine you are at a special beach or favourite place, daydream about lying in the sun or listening to the waves, or imagine a calming waterfall.

Researchers at Oxford university found that by doing this insomniacs fell asleep 20 minute earlier. This may be because picturing an interesting and engaging scene takes up more brain space than simply counting sheep and is easier to stay with.

Research covering forty years of study by scientists at the University of Arizona suggests that chronic insomnia can kill you.

It is linked to higher inflammation of the blood which is responsible for most chronic diseases. This study was published on line

by The American Journal of Medicine.

As insomnia appears to increase the risk of heart disease, dementia, diabetes and depression now is a good time for you to try a different view and approach your insomnia from a new angle.

Battlefields of Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift I’ve been reflecting on my recent visit to South Africa and trying to decide what part was the highlight of the three week adventure.

I’ve been reflecting on my recent visit to South Africa and trying to decide what part was the highlight of the three week adventure.

There was the fantastic experience of exploring the outstanding Grootbos Nature Reserve overlooking the beautiful rugged coast of Walkers Bay where the Southern Right Whales can be seen from the shore.

Then there was the sheer indulgent luxury of the Rovos Rail journey from Cape Town to Pretoria - amazing!

So too was the incredible Mont Rochelle Hotel in Franschoek where the food and wine-tasting experiences were outstanding.

But, in the end, I knew it had to be my stay at Fugitive’s Drift Lodge: a very special place set in a 5,000 acre Natural Heritage Site adjacent to both Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift and including the site where Lieutenants Melvill and Coghill lost their lives attempting to save the Queen’s Colour of their regiment.

On our first full day, we headed out to Isandlwana in a Range Rover with our knowledgeable guide, Alistair, whose easygoing nature made him seem more like a family friend. First of all, we looked down

from the hill over which the Zulu attack was launched onto the plain where the battle took place as Alistair explained the strategies of the opposing armies. He then drove us into the World Heritage Site and set up three chairs in the shade of a tree where we sat with mugs of coffee and homemade biscuits for over an hour (maybe two - the time flew by) whilst he told us all about the battle and how it unfolded.

We were mesmerised by the remarkable story of the great Zulu victory and took time to walk to the cave where the last brave - and, sadly, unknown - British soldier died. The many cairns - piles of whitepainted stones - around the battlefield mark where the bones of British soldiers were gathered together (the ground was too hard to dig graves).

On our second day we visited Rorke’s Drift - the scene of one of the most heroic actions in the history of the British Army.

This time, our equally knowledgeable guide was Douglas - the son of the owner of Fugitive’s Drift. As I walked around the site and into the reconstructed hospital building, listening to Doug’s insightful stories about the individuals whose incredible bravery and determination was hard to imagine, I felt truly honoured to be

there and to understand and appreciate the enormity of their plight - albeit without the danger! It is incredible to think that 139 British troops - many of who were hospital patients - successfully defended their position against a force of around 4,000 Zulu warriors, winning more Victoria Crosses than in any other single battle in history.

The battle of Rorke’s Drift was immortalised by the 1964 film “Zulu” - starring a young Michael Caine - and in 1979 the battle of Isandlwana was portrayed by the film “Zulu Dawn”.

The Battlefields can be visited from Durban and incorporated into a longer itinerary to South Africa.

But, whether you are a real history buff or simply a curious traveller like me, the Fugitive’s Drift experience is one that you really should not miss: it will remain one of my travel highlights for years to come.

Take warm clothing as some of the tours start early before the sun warms the atmosphere.

Hire a 4 x 4 for the drive as it involves a lot of inclines and some rough tracks.

Gardening Tips and Advice December - Winter frost As we approach the shortest day of the year in December you will need work to keep you warm outside, such as digging and tree pruning. Check your winter protection and if you have a greenhouse make sure the heater is working. Hopefully there are not too many jobs left to do this year so you will have time for some fireside garden planning.

Check that greenhouse heaters are working.

3.

Insulate outdoor taps and prevent ponds from freezing.

4.

Prune open-grown apples and pears (but not those trained against walls).

5.

Prune acers, birches and vines before Christmas to avoid bleeding.

Harvest leeks, parsnips, winter cabbage, sprouts and remaining root crops.

7.

Deciduous trees and shrubs can still be planted and transplanted.

Take hardwood cuttings.

Keep mice away from stored produce.

10.

Reduce watering of houseplants.

EssentialsMAG Tasty Recipe

Perfect Roast Turkey Preparation time: overnight; Cooking time: over 2 hours; Serves: 8 - 10

INGREDIENTS 100g/3½oz butter, softened 2 tsp sea salt 2 tsp freshly ground black pepper 4.5kg/10lb turkey, with giblets removed and cavity wiped clean 3 large onions, halved

METHOD The bird should be prepared the night before. Mix the butter with the salt and freshly ground black pepper, then season the cavity of the bird.

Rub the butter mix all over the turkey. Fold a large piece of greaseproof paper to double thickness and lay over the breast to protect it during the cooking. Leave it in the fridge overnight.

On the day you wish to serve the bird heat the oven to 220C/430F/Gas 7. Take the turkey out of the fridge and allow it to come to room temperature while the oven is heating up.

Put the onions in a large roasting tray. Put the turkey on a trivet or wire rack in the tray.

Pour one cup of boiling water into the cavity of the bird and seal with a skewer. Pour two cups of boiling water into the bottom of the tin, then cover the whole thing with two layers of foil, making sure it is well sealed around the edges.

Cook for 20 minutes, then reduce the temperature to 200C/400F/Gas 6. After 1½ hours, remove the foil and greaseproof paper. Cook for a further 40 minutes and don't open the oven door until the cooking time is up.

To test whether the turkey is cooked, insert a skewer or knife blade into the point where the thigh joins the breast - the juice should run clear.

If it is pink, cook it for another 20 minutes and test again. Leave the turkey to rest in a warm place for at least 15 minutes before carving.

Strain the juice from the bottom of the tin into a large jug - the fat will rise to the top, leaving the aromatic turkey stock beneath. Skim off the fat use the juices to make a gravy or serve as it is.

Local Police Advice Keeping North Wales Safe Staying Safe this Christmas I’d like to start this month by wishing everyone a Happy and Safe Christmas and New Year.

A few tips that may help you to keep yourself and personal possessions safe over this period. Christmas will soon be here and due to this busy time we forget totally about our own personal safety, home security and vehicle security. Can I remind you that criminals don’t forget and this is an ideal time for them to strike when our guards are down.

Personal safety When collecting monies form Banks or Building Societies, make sure that you put your money away, preferably while still at the counter in a secure purse or wallet. Only carry small amounts of cash, take what you need. Be vigilante at cash machines, keep your PIN safe and make sure no-one is watching you.

Going to your Christmas Parties Always make sure someone knows where you are going, who with and what time you’re expected back. Stay with your friends and look out for each other. Never go off with a stranger and avoid taking short cuts down dark alleyways, car parks and parks.

Never leave your drinks unattended at the bar or in a nightclub.

Vehicle Safety Always make sure your vehicle is locked and don’t leave valuables on show, put all your Christmas presents in the boot. Remember your vehicle is like a shop window for thieves.

If you can see any property left inside, SO CAN THE THIEF. If you are going late night shopping always make sure you park in a well-lit area.

The Difference Between Yoga & Pilates

By EssentialsMAG fitness contributor HELEN CONWAY As a Pilates and yoga teacher, I am often asked which is better? Pilates or yoga?

There is no simple answer, and very often it boils down to the reason someone is starting either. I would usually advise someone with a back problem to start with Pilates, but for someone who is generally fit but inflexible, yoga.

There are many similarities between the two (Joseph Pilates was a big fan of yoga and took from the discipline to develop the Pilates programme), but there are also many differences.

The great thing is, you can do both without one detracting from the other.

Yoga originated from India about 5,000 years ago whilst Pilates is far more recent, dating from the 1920's.

Generally speaking, yoga focuses on flexibility, strength and balance, and offers a (non-religious) meditative practice that teaches practitioners to find calmness and inner stillness.

Pilates does not contain any meditative practice, although many people find it calming by the very nature of the breathing and flowing movement. It is a purely physical practice that aims to build strength, mobility, correct imbalances that may create discomfort or pain, and improve posture and core stability.

If you are new to either practice, then know that both can be difficult to understand to begin with. Consistency of practice is important. And perhaps, learn one before starting the other so as not to get confused by the crossover of information.

But, both offer multiple benefits, so if you want to start, but don't know which would suit you best, then speak to your instructor for guidance.

This month’s spotlight is on Margaret Carter Patchwork was established in 1982 by entrepreneur Margaret Carter, a talented, although untrained, home cook. With a start up cost of just £9, saved from the housekeeping, she began selling her home-made pâté to pubs in Llangollen. Fast forward 35 years and Patchwork is one of Wales’ most successful food firms, with a modest turnover and numerous awards. I had the privilege of meeting Margaret at her factory in Ruthin.

Tell me a little bit about what you do?

Together with my partner Jen, we are co-founders of The Patchwork Traditional Food Company - an award winning successful and growing company, producing fine foods using locally produced ingredients wherever possible.

Each product is skilfully cooked with an eye for perfection to create that traditional taste for Patchwork’s growing number of discerning customers.

How did it all begin?

I needed to earn some money, and was making chutney for a local restaurant, but it wasn’t selling very well. One day the owner asked me if I could make pâté. I told him “yes, of course I can”, even though I didn’t know what pâté was! I didn’t know

how to make it, what the ingredients were, or how you ate it! But as Richard Branson famously said “If you are offered an opportunity always say ‘yes’, and then work out how to do it afterwards.” So, I went away, did some research, and at home produced my first chicken liver, brandy and herb pâté which proved to be very popular in the restaurant. I then started to sell to other local restaurants, pubs and shops.

Fast forward 35 years later and the £9.00 start-up from my kitchen has turned into a multi-million-pound business, employing 20+ staff. Our products are sold all over the World. Harrods, Selfridges, Fortnum & Mason have stocked our pâté, and we have been supplying First Class and Business Class for major airlines for the past ten years.

Can you tell me about any memorable projects you’ve worked on?

It was very exciting when we started working with HRH Prince Charles to produced pâté for his Duchy Originals brand. Prince Charles personally tasted all seven products and was very involved, but it was quite a challenge getting all the samples to him to try as he travels to different places all the time!

What do you find most satisfying about what you do?

I like things to be as perfect as I can make them. Our products are made to perfection using locally produced ingredients wherever possible. I am a chronic dyslexic, so I have limitations, but I surround myself with fantastic people who are cleverer then me. The team decides its own production schedules and work patterns, is able to recruit collectively and is involved in everything from the design of new packaging to product development.

It’s very inspiring.

And the most challenging...

Currently things are not as easy as they have been, due to economic uncertainty.

Not just in this country, the problem is Worldwide. I’ve been through four recessions, but this one is for sure the scariest. It doesn’t make any sense at all!

No one knows what’s going on and that’s reflected in footfall and trade in general, not only in the food industry. Everyone is afraid and there doesn’t seem to be a light at the end of the tunnel.

What advice would you give to your younger self?

Sweat the building you’re in... make it work.

What I mean by this is we used to be in a factory up the road which was 3,000 ft2 but instead of working different shifts to make the space work for us we moved into our current building which is 10,000 ft2. Ever since we’ve struggled to make it work as it’s too large and the overheads are high.

But you don’t know what you don’t know until you know you didn’t know it! I am congruent, I wouldn’t change my journey.

Financial News with Hadlow Edwards Funny Money and Other Stuff Once again, quite unbelievably (and hopefully not sounding too much like my mother) we reach the end of another year.

We have written on a wide range of subjects in a very busy year and hope all of our readers have enjoyed something along the way.

As usual some completely irrelevant and perhaps odd facts to finish the year as follows; • Not everything gets more expensive. The first ballpoint pen when sold in America was over $12. That's the equivalent of nearly $165 today. For a biro!

• In 2004, a diamond worth $300,000 was attached to the front of a Formula One car to promote the movie 'Oceans 12'. The car crashed in practice - the diamond was never found. So get searching!

• Winning the Lottery. Some bright spark said "I've done the calculation and your chances of winning the lottery are identical, whether you play or not". Good luck anyway!

• Firsts. The first ATM cash dispenser was installed in a branch of Barclays Bank in London in 1967. The first seven-sided coin anywhere in the world - was our 50p piece.

• An anonymous quote - “a father is someone who carries pictures in his wallet where his cash used to be.” And Jules Renard said on the same subject “I finally know what distinguishes man from other beasts.

• One chap without too many concerns was 7ft 1 inch (2.16 meters apparently) basketball legend Shaquille O'Neil. He said "I'm tired hearing all about money. All I want to do is play basketball, drink Pepsi and wear Reebok.”

• And finally, the ‘makes you think, doesn't it, moment of 2017' (well it was mine anyway) was this; Cleopatra. She lived closer to the invention of the iPhone than she did to the building of the Great Pyramid of Giza.

(Honestly, I did check).

So that's it, time flies even for Cleopatra, the World somehow gets a bit odder and odder all the time and another New Year is upon us.

Friars Field 3rd Annual Scarecrow Competition Friars Field held its 3rd annual Scarecrow Competition and we are pleased to say the local Community turned up in their masses to support us. Once again the Scarecrow entries were fabulous. We we’re delighted to have Councillor John McCusker from Overton and our local Community Councillor Steve Harvey to join our event and judge the Scarecrow entries. We had 12 Scarecrows in total and the effort into making them was astounding. Each year they seem to be getting better.

Everyone did a brilliant job.

• 1st Prize went to Joanna Payton with a traditional Scarecrow.

• 2nd Prize went to Louie Payton with Foxy Bingo.

• 3rd Prize went to Fern McBride with another traditional Scarecrow • People’s Choice went to Liz, Claire and Katrina with Sister Act. Thanks to all the community who embraced the introduction of our first Dog Show by bringing along their four legged best friend. The dog show was organised

by Daniel and Rhys and was a huge success with 15 different classes. Thanks to Tracy and Dave from The Middle Shop, Bangor on Dee for sponsoring our dog show. We are glad to announce through the continued support of the Middle Shop the dog show will become an annual addition to this great Community Day. After the successful introduction of the dog show we are looking to introduce an additional Competition for the children to take part in. Who can grow the largest sunflower. More details to follow. Also for

you avid gardeners a best naturally grown vegetable Competition.

We would like to thank all the volunteers, the community and local businesses: especially for all the donations and prizes given, along with their continued support.

Special thanks goes to The Middle Shop, River Dee Machinery, BOD Racecourse, Village Bakery, Johnson’s Basket Shop, V4B Leasing, Vicky with all her animals to name but a few.

We raised a grand total of £1,525.00.We will be putting some of the money towards a commemorative bench in remembrance of Geoff Fitton who was sadly missed this year.

News from Wrexham County Council What? No Roadworks?

You’ll all be pleased to know that once again we will be banning roadworks in and around the town centre between 4 December and 8 January to help the traffic flow freely during the busy Christmas period.

The plans will allow for emergency works only to take place if necessary.

The news follows the recent announcement that there will be free parking in all council owned town centre parks in December in order to boost Christmas trade for traders.

Cllr David A Bithell, Lead Member for the Environment and Transport, said: “We are always pleased to support the town centre and alleviate any traffic problems during the Christmas period. The free parking should also help encourage visitors to the town centre and we hope many take advantage of it.”

News from Wrexham County Council Gearing up for Christmas at the Foodbank Wrexham’s Foodbank is gearing up for a busy Christmas season and we went along to their main warehouse in Rhosddu see how they’re preparing. From the arrival of donations which all have to be weighed, dated and sorted to distribution once a voucher is issued is a logistical accomplishment that any organisation, voluntary or private would be proud of. The Foodbank is manned by over 100 dedicated volunteers who all make sure the operation works smoothly and no-one goes short of food once their need has been identified. The organisation is looking at accessing funding to employe a Project Manager and a Warehouse Manager to move the operation forward and ensure it remains as smooth running as it is now. Donations come from individuals, businesses and the biggest donations come from Tesco, Sainsbury’s Churches, Rotary Clubs and Coleg Cambria.

Cambell Edmonson, Chair of the Trustees of the Foodbank, said: “People in Wrexham are very generous and always step up to our appeals for donations.

As Christmas is on its way we will be called upon to help families across Wrexham and we can only do this with their support.”

About 3,500 individuals were helped in the last financial year. 1,500 of them children.

Nationally there has been a 10–12% increase in foodbank usage. And it’s not just families who need help, lots of single people and couples find themselves in need at times.

Why do people have to use a foodbank?

The foodbank is all about helping those in a “crisis”. It isn’t there for the homeless who usually have access to other specialist agencies. It’s there for individuals, couples and families who reach a point where they need a food parcel to get them over three days until their wages or benefits come through.

Do they give a food parcel to anyone?

No-one can just walk in and ask for food. A voucher has to be issued to those who are recognised by a professional, such as a social worker, as being in crisis. That voucher not only allows them access to a food parcel it also gives them lots of useful advice and contacts that will give them help to get them out of crisis and not using the foodbank.

Donations can be made of non-perishable food that is in date. They can be taken to foodbank centres around Wrexham and also donated at local supermarkets.

Great Day Out - Discover 900 Years of History at Norton Priory Norton Priory is the most excavated monastic site in Europe. Top tips to help ensure your pets have a great Christmas. There are presents, fantastic food and we get to spend time with family and friends. But, did you know that Christmas can be hazardous and stressful for your pets?

Overindulging It can be tempting to shower our pets with tasty treats. But extra weight gain can lead to health problems, so to keep your pet happy and healthy keep treats to a minimum.

Festive food Festive food is delicious to us but to our pets many of it is highly toxic and dangerous. Chocolate, mince pies, Christmas pudding, onion gravy and alcohol are all poisonous for our pets and the bones from carcasses are a dangerous choking hazard.

Festive decorations Festive food isn’t the only hazard to consider around Christmas time, some household items can also be dangerous too. Some plants and flowers including poinsettias, holly, ivy, mistletoe and lilies can be toxic, avoid these if you have pets.

Keep your pets safe by making sure food is stored securely out of reach. Be prepared for any accidents by ensuring that you've taken out pet insurance - take out our pet insurance with us and you'll be helping pets in our care have a Merry Christmas too.
