The first day of a new school year is always something special, marking new beginnings for children and parents alike. It’s good we can all have a fresh start, some children really need this and I expect some adults need it too. A new school year, new opportunities, new challenges, meanwhile forgetting the negative elements of the last couple of years and putting them behind us. Childhood inevitably encompasses numerous rites of passage and children are naturally excited about getting older and reaching new milestones. I generally find that children are natural optimists: they live in the here and now, and their lives are very much rooted in the present. So my approach at this time of year has always been to tap into that positive energy and use it to help them get the most from the whole school run – homework - fun cycle. After all, I need the routine as much as they do! Have a great month! All the best, Vicky Heathfield

Sesswick Community Council has launched a new website for the Community. The new website is easy to navigate and has a Contact Us section as well as local news. Please pop on and take a look. Don’t Lose Your Vote!
During early September, you will receive a letter from Wrexham Council asking you to confirm your details on the electoral register, so that when election time comes around, you are all set to cast your vote. If everything is correct, it means that everyone who is eligible to vote, can vote. In Wales, 16 and 17 year olds are able to vote in Senedd and local government elections, which means that 14 and 15 year olds need to register too. If you have anyone living at your property that is aged 14 or older, they can now be added to the electoral register. If you don’t hear from the council, you might not be on the register. If you want to register, the easiest way is online at: www.gov.uk/register-to-vote
As we reported a few months ago, the Bangor on Dee Church bells had been removed from the tower and taken to Taylor’s Foundry in Loughborough. Here, they have been cleaned, tuned and fitted with new or refurbished ringing fittings including headstocks, clappers, wheels, stays, sliders and pulleys. While the bells were out of the tower, the bell frame, originally installed in 1902, was been cleaned, painted and treated with wood preservative. By the time we go to print, the work to reinstall them in the tower should have been completed, including the fitting of a new rope guide, making the bells easier to ring. If anyone is interested in trying their hand at bell ringing give Deryl Crocombe a call on 07557 257797.

Everyone who signs up will receive a sticker pack with a new sticker, which should be displayed on your bin lid from September. Any unwanted garden waste bins can be removed on request. Those who do not want their garden waste collected can take their waste to one of the household waste recycling centres (free of charge). Alternatively, people can compost garden waste at home.
Hollywood stars and Wrexham AFC co-owners Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds have once again gone above and beyond with huge donations to help a young Wrexham girl in her battle with a rare form of brain cancer. On her third birthday, Aria Hodgkiss, from Rhostyllen, was tragically diagnosed with Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG) - a tumour in her brain stem. The brain stem is used to regulate balance, breathing, and heart rate, which means the tumour cannot be removed. After being given the devastating prognosis, Aria’s family quickly set about finding alternative forms of treatment - and heard about a pioneering drug, ONC201, which has shown in trials to kill cancer cells with a specific genetic mutation in the tumour. As it’s not available on the NHS, a GoFundMe page was set up with a target of raising £60,000.
To help Aria’s cause, the Wrexham AFC co-owners pledged £10,000 each on the ‘Aria Vs DIPG’ GoFundMe page (www.gofundme.com/f/aria-vs-dipg). This marks another charitable act by the duo, who also donated £10,000 to the Stillbirth & Neonatal Death Society earlier this year after Wrexham player Jordan Davies, and his partner Kelsey Edwards’, child was stillborn.
Wrexham Council is urging residents to renew their garden waste collections. The charge for 2022/23 remains frozen at £25 per green bin per year, and the service runs from Monday 5th September 2022 until Friday 1st September 2023.
Wrexham Garden Waste Collection
The easiest way to pay for the service is online but if that isn’t possible, people can call Streetscene to make a card payment, though it is likely that they experience a wait. Wrexham Council highly recommends paying for the service online where possible (www.wrexham.gov.uk). The council will also not accept cash or cheques.

The Farndon Soapbox Derby has been generously sponsored by local Cheshire businesses and entrepreneurs who all saw the value in getting behind such a fun, innovative, community event that would also raise money for a very worthy charity. Gittins and Co were the first to approach the organisers as our primary Platinum sponsor, swiftly followed by the Rickitt Partnership, KenneyMoore, Ellis and Co, Daulby Read, the local pubs The Hare and the White Lion and RF Bellis Haulage to name just a few! We are still looking for volunteers who would like to give a couple of hours of their time on the day to help set up the track and then to take it down again at the end of the day, or help steward our car parks. Please get in touch if you can help! It’s also not too late to join in the fun if you are a local business or entrepreneur! For more information and to find out how this event will affect you if you are a local resident living in Farndon and Holt , please visit the website www.farndonsoapboxderby.co.uk Facebook Page @farndonsoapboxderby or get in touch with the team directly getinvolved@farndonsoapboxderby.co.uk

Cats usually sleep an average of 15 hours PER day, which means that they spend about 70% of their lives sleeping! But when they’re awake we have plenty of time to enrich their lives and keep them entertained and occupied. The latest trends for 2022 include many high-tech gadgets and toys such as an interactive laser cat toy! This battery operated toy will deliver hours of fun for your cat thanks to the beam of laser it sends out in random patterns to captivate and activate your cat. Those with indoor cats can now buy an exercise wheel, similar to a hamster wheel, to help them exercise!
According to Guinness World Records, the oldest cat ever, named Creme Puff, lived to be 38 years old!
In the wild, the average lifespan of a cat is anywhere from two to 16 years. A house cat has a longer average lifespan of 12 to 18 years, though it’s not uncommon for domestic cats to live into their 20s.

Of course, high tech gadgets are great but remember your cat is most interested in you and will appreciate and benefit from time spent with their owner. Stay safe and healthy! Always remember to always consult your Vet if you have any concerns about your pet.
Of course, if you want your cat to safely enjoy some time outdoors why not consider a cat harness and leash? This will allow your cat to explore the great outdoors and get some gentle exercise and is the perfect way to bond with your cat. Another way to help them enjoy a calm and balanced state of mind is to play music to them. There is a Bluetooth speaker you can purchase which is preloaded with calming, feline music to reduce stress or use in stressful situations such as during travel, grooming or when loud noises are present like during thunderstorms.
which is brought to us by the CATalyst Council to help spread education and awareness about the health, welfare and importance of companion cats. There’s a misconception that cats are incredibly selfreliant but, the truth is, they are very social animals and require the same level of attention that we give to our dogs!

Will you have a battery? Solar energy is only available during the day. A battery will help store that energy and increase your self-consumption from the solar generation and reduce your electricity bill. Installation It is recommended that your solar panels are installed by an MCS Certified installer, and you have an MCS Certificate. Most energy suppliers require this for claiming the Smart Export Guarantee. Making the most of your solar panels To ensure that you are making the most of the free electricity that the solar panels are generating, it may mean you need to change your routines and plan ahead. For example, using your washing machine or dishwasher during the day rather than in the evening. Making money!
Smart Export Guarantees (SEG) is a government-backed initiative to pay smallscale generators for low-carbon electricity which they export back to the National Grid. You will require an MCS Certificate, Grid Connection certificate (G98/G99) and Smart Meter.

By TIM PAINTER at Smart energi With the urgency of climate change and the collapse of biodiversity, the demand for green energy is high. Considering the sharp and continued rise of energy prices, solar panels and battery storage prove good value for money in the medium/ long term. Planning permission and building regulation Solar panels are designated ‘Permitted Development’, meaning that planning permission is no longer necessary, unless it’s a flat roof, listed building or in a conservation area then planning permission will likely be required. Distribution Network Operator (SPEN) If you are installing solar panels with an inverter above 3.68kW (AC output) you will need to get permission from your distribution network operator (SPEN) in our area. This is called a G99 Grid Connection application. Notify your home insurance Make sure your home insurance is valid with solar panels. The Galapagos Islands are one of the few places in the world that remain relatively untouched by human exploitation. Having said that, tourism is welcomed because it makes a valuable contribution towards conservation programmes and research. However, there are strict rules that each tour company and visitors to the Galapagos National Park must abide by in order to protect the archipelago’s fragile ecosystem and preserve the pristine condition of each diverse island. I cruised on the Celebrity Flora which took me to all the islands comprising ‘The Outer Loop’ which provided at least two excursions every day, which involved walking, snorkelling, kayaking or hiking at various levels.
Groups of blue-footed boobies (a marine bird) diving into the water at over 60mph to catch fish
I have to admit to feeling somewhat humble to be following in Charles Darwin’s footsteps - and to think he came from just up the road in Shrewsbury! His contribution to naturalism and his theory of evolution are acknowledged in many ways in the archipelago: from research centres to several species of creatures to street Inames.wasstruck by how tame much of the wildlife is: sea lions, birds, tortoises, iguanas, turtles were all so relaxed in the company of humans that it made our tours even more enjoyable. And the fullyqualified naturalists who accompany the tours are not only extremely knowledgeable but also very entertaining. There are so many highlights from my trip that I don't know where to start!
Giant tortoises chewing their way through lush growth or keeping cool in a shallow pond.
In fact, there are 2,000 species in the Galapagos archipelago that are found nowhere else in the world.
The expedition ship I travelled on has been purpose-built for the Galapagos Islands and was, in my view, the best way to experience this destination. A combination of understated luxury complemented by eco-friendly natural surroundings and kind, caring, professional staff who enhance every minute of your stay through their expertise made this a holiday to remember.

While there's not as much to do in the ornamental garden at this time of the year, if you have a fruit or vegetable patch, you'll be busy reaping the rewards of harvest. It's also time to get out and start planting spring-flowering bulbs for next year and you can collect seeds for next summer's colour too. Make the most of the remaining warmth while you can! 1. Divide herbaceous perennials 2. Pick autumn raspberries 3. Collect and sow seed from perennials and hardy annuals 4. Dig up remaining potatoes before slug damage spoils them 5. Net ponds before leaf fall gets underway 6. Keep up with watering of new plants, using rain or grey water if possible 7. Start to reduce the frequency of houseplant watering 8. Clean out cold frames and greenhouses, ready for use in the autumn 9. Cover leafy vegetable crops with bird-proof netting 10. Plant spring flowering bulbs. Easy HaddockSmokedKedgeree
200g white basmati rice
4 tbsp double cream lemon wedges, to serve METHOD
125g frozen peas
40g butter 1 tsp groundnut or vegetable oil
INGREDIENTS
4 tbsp flat-leaf parsley, roughly chopped
SERVES 4 Celebrating the joyous union of flaky fish and boiled eggs, Smoked Haddock Kedgeree is just as good for lunch or supper as it is for brunch.
2 medium eggs 325g skinless boneless smoked haddock fillet 1 bay leaf
1 tbsp mild curry powder
1 onion, finely chopped
Put the haddock and bay leaf in a shallow pan and cover with cold water. Cover and simmer gently for 8-10 minutes until the fish flakes easily. Meanwhile, melt the butter and oil in a pan and cook the onion for 8-10 minutes until softened. Stir in the rice and curry powder; cook for 2 minutes. Put the fish on a plate. Pour 600ml of the poaching liquid over the rice, add a pinch of salt, cover and cook on a low heat for 8 minutes until the rice is almost tender. Peel and quarter the eggs and flake the fish into chunks. Add the peas to the rice and cook together for a further 4-5 minutes. Gently stir in the fish, most of the parsley and the cream. Season to taste and serve topped with the eggs, the remaining parsley and the lemon wedges.

While higher education remains a popular option for most, attitudes towards apprenticeships are changing and they're now recognised as an equally valid alternative to university. With an apprenticeship, most of your learning is through on-the-job training and you’ll work towards a qualification at the same time. You’ll get paid a salary just like a normal employee, and you’ll also get dedicated study time throughout the week.
Prospectiveimmediately.employers value apprenticeships for their practical nature and real-life work experience
The level of apprenticeship you start at depends on the qualifications you already have and the role you’re applying for.
Choosing your next move after leaving school requires careful consideration.
For example, you might not need any qualifications to start a Level 2 apprenticeship, but you’ll need A-Levels or equivalent for a Level 6 or 7 Apprenticeshipsapprenticeship. appeal to those looking for alternatives to university as they take a more practical approach to learning. You'll focus on training for a specific career and learn your trade by actually doing the job. You'll gain hands-on experience and have the opportunity to apply your skills
UCAS predicts that by 2025 there will be one million applications for university places every year, so with that level of competition it’s hardly surprising that today’s upcoming school leavers are looking for viable alternatives to uni.
There are apprenticeships available for thousands of different jobs in a range of industries. From something hands-on like engineering, nursing or construction, to a career in marketing, law or project management, to name a few. With an apprenticeship you'll immediately enter the world of work and gain valuable on-the-job experience and a new set of life skills while earning money as you study. There are no tuition fees (so no student debt), and you'll begin to make industry contacts from day one. What’s not to like?
Moreopportunities.organisations than ever before are offering apprenticeship schemes as they come to view this method of training as a viable alternative to a university degree. You can find out more about apprenticeships via www.apprenticeships.gov.uk
Apprenticeships Have Come of Age

Currently, if your net estate is worth more than the standard nil-rate band of £325,000, 40p in tax is charged for every pound that exceeds the threshold; except, broadly speaking, if you leave your main residence to a lineal descendant, £175,000 is added to that nil-rate band. Unused elements of both allowances are transferable on death to a surviving spouse or civil partner. This regime has been criticised for discriminating against those who don’t own a home, those who don’t have children, and those who aren’t in a marriage or civil IHTpartnership.intheUK is often referred to as a ‘voluntary tax’, and it seems that inertia or ignorance is largely to blame for wealth ending up in the hands of the taxman rather than surviving family members. Although, with careful planning, those with estates currently worth more than the nil-rate band can legitimately reduce their IHT liability, or possibly pay nothing at all. In your gift Gifts are normally included in the net estate for IHT purposes if they were made less than seven years before death. However, they are ignored if they total less than £3,000 in any one tax year. This means that you can make gifts to one, or several people, up to £3,000 in total in any tax year without attracting IHT. If the exemption is not used in one tax year, it can be carried forward to the next year, potentially enabling a couple to remove £12,000 from their joint estate in just one tax Thatyear.money could be used to help younger family members facing financial challenges; for example, topping up a child’s pension or Junior ISA could provide them with an invaluable head start in life. For 2022/23, the Junior ISA allowance is £9,000. While lifetime gifts can significantly reduce an IHT liability, if you don’t take time to write
Inheritance Tax (IHT) is widely viewed as unfair, and even the experts agree it’s complex: only effective and early planning can minimise its impact on your estate.
Inherently unfair?

The value of an investment with St. James's Place will be directly linked to the performance of the funds you select and the value can therefore go down as well as up. You may get back less than you invested.

Take advice IHT often falls on the ill-prepared and unadvised. That’s why it’s important to seek financial advice, so that all your assets are properly protected.
Hadlow Edwards Wealth Management Limited is an Appointed Representative of and represents only St. James's Place Wealth Management plc (which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority) for the purpose of advising solely on the group's wealth management products and services, more details of which are set out on the group's website www.sjp.co.uk/products.
Will writing involves the referral to a service that is separate and distinct to those offered by St. James's Place. Wills, along with Trusts, are not regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority.
a valid Will, your estate will be handled according to the laws of intestacy. If you die intestate, you have no control over how your estate is distributed. Rather than everything passing to a spouse or civil partner, a proportion could be transferred to descendants, triggering a potential IHT Ifliability.yourchildren’s share is worth more than the individual IHT threshold, they could be liable to pay 40% tax on anything they inherit over that amount. Writing a Will that leaves assets worth up to the tax-free threshold of £325,000 to children, with the balance of the estate left to a surviving spouse, could avoid this. But there may be even better options, depending on circumstances, through the use of trusts.
The levels and bases of taxation, and reliefs from taxation, can change at any time. The value of any tax relief is generally dependent on individual circumstances.

Claire and Paul are living their dream and I wish them every success. A festival of football culture is being launched in Wrexham later this year, coinciding with Wales qualifying for the World Cup for the first time since 1958. Wal Goch: Festival for Football Lovers will take place at the spiritual home of Welsh football from 11th – 13th November and will offer a dose of World Cup fever for those not going to Qatar. Organisers hope the festival, which has the backing of the Football Association of Wales, will become a yearly event. A range of activities, film screenings, talks and workshops are expected to feature across the city, with the finer details due to be revealed in the coming weeks.
It was really pleasing to hear they’ve received invaluable support from Business Wales and benefited from the Welsh Government’s Town Centre Entrepreneurship Fund. This scheme is specifically aimed at helping people who are looking to start and grow a business in one of four North Wales town/city centres – Bangor, Colwyn Bay, Rhyl and Wrexham. Details can be found online but please do not hesitate to contact me for further information.

Recently, a series of focus groups took place, including one at Wrexham Museum, which aimed to engage with a wide range of people and gather a variety of ideas. This will be a significant event for the city and will be something all football fans will enjoy. I am in regular contact with organisers and will continue to help as best I Itcan.was a pleasure to be interviewed at Calon FM’s new home in the Wrexham Enterprise Hub. As a long-time supporter of the community radio station, I know it has been a challenging few years.
To^st (Toast) is a brand new café and deli in Wrexham that specialises in high quality, local produce. Set up by husband and wife team, Claire and Paul, I recently popped in for some lunch and to find out more about their venture.
Tel: 01978
Allan, Arran and the team, which is largely made up of volunteers, have done an amazing job rebuilding the station. I wrote letters of support backing their cause and I was pleased they were able to secure significant Welsh Government investment, via the Community Facilities Programme, to help construct their new state-of-the-art Calonstudios.FM is a fantastic asset for our community and I am sure the station will continue to be a proud and passionate voice for our city.
