Having read Lynne's update this month it seems that we still need to be on our guard for burglaries.

There does seem to have been a lot of crime in and around Wrexham over the last few months. I was shocked to hear the Buck House pub was targeted the other week too.

So we all need to take heed of Lynne's advice.

With regard the mattress door to door selling Victoria Lee - Designer I have also heard that these mattresses can be second hand and in disgusting condition, but packaged to appear like new to scam people out of some money and to make them think they're getting a bargain. We do also have to be aware of the distraction burglary potential with door calling too.

The news does seem to be all doom and gloom at the moment, and the local bus service is still an ongoing saga and challenge, but I'm pleased to see a service has been resumed of some description at least.

And I hope you've all survived storm Doris too. There were quite a few trees down across Wrexham and quite a lot of damage suffered too. And the gritters have been out in force this week. So keep your eyes out for Freddie Salted, Chillie Charlie, Sir Gritalot, Snowminator, Percy Plough, Freddie Freeze, Mr Frosty, Snow Problem, Ice Krispie, Bobbie Eira and True Grit.

Great names aren't they!

Drug Litter

Moves to deal with issues of drug litter in areas across Wrexham will be examined by members as partners such as the Health Board, the Public Service Board and the Local Authority put their views forward.

The views of major partners contacted by Wrexham County Borough Council’s Safeguarding Communities & Wellbeing Scrutiny Committee on issues around drug use, discarded needles and the associated community impact will be discussed at its next meeting on Wednesday February 15.

The meeting follows on from a meeting in October 2016 when the Scrutiny Committee discussed the findings of a Task and Finish Group set up to examine the issue of unsafely discarded needles in Wrexham and made recommendations to key partners in order to facilitate actions to tackle and respond to drug litter in the future.

Recommendations included lobbying the Welsh Government on the need for strategies to address the adverse consequences of needle and syringe programmes and for partners to work together to identify hotspots and provide a single point of responsibility, co-ordination and accountability for dealing with drug litter.

Responses have now been received from partners, and will be discussed by the committee on February 15. The meeting will be webcast from the council website.

Cllr Rob Walsh, Chairman of the Scrutiny Committee, said: “The October meeting at which the findings of the Task and Finish Group were initially discussed proved very engaging and a lot was gained by getting all the relevant representatives together to discuss the issues. As with the October meeting, the meeting on Wednesday will be webcast live and I hope members of the public take the opportunity to follow the proceedings of the meeting online. This is an issue of great importance to the people of Wrexham, and I look forward to the debate.”

Wrexham Country Market Dear Jill, I read with interest the Wrexham News article on the move to temporary accommodation by traders from the People's Market in February's edition of Essentials. Having been aware of the traders' great concerns about their future over the last year or so I wish them all the best in their new venues.

It was very disappointing however to see that Wrexham Country Market, which has traded in the People's Market for several years, was not mentioned yet again as was the case with the notices in the Market mall and on the doors, on wrexham.com and in the recent advert in the Leader, presumably placed by WCBC. This has led to many in the Wrexham area assuming that we have closed.

We have not closed but, due to the prolonged uncertainty about where we would be relocated, we accepted the very kind offer from Wingetts Auctioneers in Holt Street, Wrexham, to trade in their showrooms, every Friday from 9.30am to 2pm. We have our usual range of baking, crafts, preserves, plants, etc... and are pleased to take orders. We are continuing to hold our occasional markets in Rossett in 2017, our first on 8th April.

Police Advice As the dark nights have drawn out quite a bit now, we still have to stay vigilant and protect our property.

There have been reports, mainly in the Wrexham area of youths going around trying doors of properties at all times of the day and evening. So, just to make everyone aware of this and to still keep your doors locked even in the day time. It’s so easy for someone to slip into your property, maybe you’re in the garden hanging washing out or having a shower. It doesn’t take them long to have a good rummage around and take a handbag that may have been left in the hall with the car keys in it or whatever. Ladies, our handbags are full of our belongings, our lives are in our handbags, so don’t leave it lying around in the hall or on the kitchen table at any time and take it upstairs with you at night.

There has also been a number of thefts of tools and power tools from vans in the Wrexham and other areas recently. Please remove tools from vehicles when left unattended.

Further reports have been received of cold callers offering mattresses door to door in various areas. One was offered for ‘free’ but declined and later learned that a neighbour had accepted a free mattress. Please remember this offer could be used as an opportunity to access a persons home to steal something or to access any security weakness. Even if the mattresses were being offered for sale we would like to remind residents that buying products on the doorstep is risky and you may not be able to contact the trader if something goes wrong with the product, and there may be safety and hygiene implications relating to it.

Nat Maurice-Jones On January 13th a fond and respectful farewell was paid by many to Nat Maurice-Jones.

Nat was best known for owning Rosemary Nurseries in Burton, Rossett, he had taken over the running of the nursery as an 18 yr old straight from Horticultural college.

In those days the nursery was well known for producing good quality cut flowers, in particular carnations and chrysanths. These were supplemented in the summer months by a wide range of the old favourites such as dahlias, stocks, sweet peas, gladioli, etc.. and summer bedding plants.

The busy local florists of Wrexham and Chester got to know Nat well as he delivered fresh supplies daily in his little van… no huge lorries with a selection from over-seas then!

Produce from Rosemary Nurseries was also taken to the busy wholesale early morning market of Liverpool too.

The 1970s and 1980s brought about change to local nurseries and market gardeners everywhere as competition increased and delivery systems improved. Nat added a wide range of shrubs and conifers, leylandi hedging was just becoming popular!

Nat was happy whatever he grew, he just loved plants and decades of diversification at the nursery didn’t deter him. In latter years the nursery found a niche and became well known for producing an enviable range of alpine plants, and at the same time growing the bedding plant requirement for Chester City Council.

Over the 50 years that Nat was at Rosemary Nurseries he was very much part of the community, always supporting and being prepared to help with anything… and if that meant hours on the coconut shy over a number of years for St Peter’s School fete or more latterly for the BRHS shows, he would do it…and much more.

Nat was a familiar sight around the village often tending to the plants, he was always courteous and happy to chat, he will be missed by many.

Nat is survived by Helen and their sons, Rob, Tom and Eddie and they hope to continue supporting the community as Nat did.

My Dear Hamy...

Anne Hayman of a Wrexham family, took in 1797 the position of subgoverness to the only child of George and Caroline, Prince and Princess of Wales. The little Princess Charlotte was delightful, but Anne became so friendly with Caroline that the Prince of Wales spitefully sacked her. Striking back, the Princess took Anne into her own household as a friend and companion. For the next seventeen years, Anne was a witness to the carryings on, the high jinks of Caroline’s little court. She devoted herself to protecting her wayward mistress from scandal, supporting her in her battles with her husband, whilst trying to cultivate a motherly instinct in her towards the growing Charlotte.

Original untouched manuscripts have led me to some interesting and novel speculations. When did Caroline first meet her lover, the dashing Sir Sidney Smith? Had she borne his son years earlier? Who was William Austin, the baby Caroline nurtured to manhood? Was the Delicate Investigation into her conduct in 1805 fair?

Did she deserve to win her trial for adultery in the House of Lords? And Princess Charlotte, the girl who would have been Queen – why did she throw over the Prince of Orange, outrage her father, and marry Leopold of Saxe-Coburg? Why was she allowed to die in childbirth? Why did her doctor commit suicide a week later?

You will like Caroline - feisty, outrageous and funny. George was hopeless as a husband and father and at ease only with motherly mistresses and cronies who spent the money he did not have. Anne herself was the voice of common sense, enjoying her friendships with local worthies, with leading politicians, with the painter Sir Thomas Lawrence and Sir Walter Scott, and acting as a shrewd marriage broker for her friends and relations.

She built her home in Gresford next to the Parish Church where after ninety seven fascinating years of vivid life, she lies buried.

Text Bangor on Dee History To celebrate the coronation of King Edward VII in Bangor it had been decided to form a committee and to invite donations towards giving a tea for the children of the parish and adults. the committee consisted of Capt Fenwick, the Hon. A. Parker, Dr Edwards Jones, Capt Tyrwhitt, Messrs. W. Cheetham, J.Davis, E. Fearnal, T Williams, E Fitzjohn, W Bibby, C Cheetham, W Mackenzie, A Sutton, J Mort, W Simons, Sergeant Major Edwards, and the Revd Roberts. the chairman was the Revd E Bisset and Messrs J. Davies and H. Jones were Secretary and Treasurer respectively.

The village was gaily decorated and at intervals throughout the day the church bells were rung. The weather was not good but failed to dampen the enthusiasm of those taking part in the festivities.

Shortly after one oclock everyone gathered at the rectory and then, led by the Rhostyllen band, proceeded to the church for a short service. At the conclusion of the service the band played the National Anthem and the procession reformed and made its way to the schools with the children singing on the way 'This is King Edward's crowning year'. A tea provided by the committee was given for upwards of 200 children and 550 adults. Mr Sutton kindly defrayed the cost of the tea for the children in the Flintshire part of the parish.

After tea the usual sports were held on the Groes field and consisted of: Boys 120 yards under 14, Girls' 80 yards under 14 years, Boys' 80 yards under 10 years, Girls' 60 yards under 10 years, Boys' 60 yards under 6 years, Girls' 40 yards under 6 years, Boys' tug of war under 14 years, 12 a side, between teams from each of the three townships (Bangor won). Men's races (single) 120 yards, 120 yards (married) over 36 years.

Coracle race over three quarters of a mile, bicycle race 2 mile, throwing the hammer, Tug of War 12 a side- Pickhill won. Walking race over one mile, Tilting at ring on bicycle ( gents), tilting at ring on bicycle (ladies). Some of the events were very exciting especially the coracle race and the tug of war.

During the course of the evening dancing took place to the strains of the Rhostyllen Band. Before leaving for home each child was presented with a coronation cup and a medal, the latter of which was given by Capt. Tyrwhitt. The festivities concluded with a display of fireworks which were kindly provided by Capt tyrwhitt.

Tax Year-End 2017 – Capture the Moment The last year has seen historic political change, and with it has come undoubted uncertainty about what the future holds. The current service has four journeys from Overton to Wrexham. 08:14, 11:14, 14:44, and the 18:44. All journeys take about 26 minutes. Penley buses depart about 7 minutes earlier.

The current service has three return journeys back to Overton leaving Wrexham at 09:45, 13:15 and 17:15.

This month sees the price of property coming to market increase by a surprisingly modest 2.0% (+£5,986), the smallest price rise at this time of year since February 2009. This is well below the average +5.0% February uplift over the previous seven years. This contributes to a further slowing in the pace of price rises, with the annual rate of +2.3% being the lowest since April 2013.

Annual rate of increase lowest since April 2013 at +2.3%, though overall demand remains strong:

• Rightmove traffic at record January levels, with visits up 3% on January 2016’s buy-to-let boosted period.

• Investor sectors understandably quieter than this time last year on number of properties coming to market and number of properties sold.

Slower rate of price increases makes it riskier for sellers to over-price their property:

• Analysis shows sellers are 40% more likely to sell if priced right when they first come to market.

• Three quarters of agents surveyed by Rightmove report price-sensitive markets with buyers reluctant to enquire if property is priced just a few percent too high.

• Price of property coming to market up 2.0% (+£5,986) this month, the smallest price rise at this time of year since February 2009.

“With Rightmove recording over 131 million visits in January, some three million higher than a year ago, demand for housing is at an all-time high for this time of year. Homehunters are busy searching online for the right home at the right price. While seller pricing power appears to be on the wane overall, the numbers of deals done is very robust, scarcely lower than during last year’s tax-saving rush, although understandably quieter in the investor sector of two beds or fewer and in parts of London.”

The latest CSSIW Inspection Report on Borderbrook Community Playgroup was published on 10th November 2016 and we are extremely proud of their assessment of our service.

The overall assessment from the CSSIW inspection was:

“Borderbrook has many strengths, it is a fun and friendly place for the children to be. Children at the service are very happy and settled and as a result confident in their behaviour and in their interactions with practitioners and other adults. Practitioners have a very caring and highly relaxed approach which creates a calm and enjoyable service atmosphere for the children. The environment is suitable as children share the use of the school resources such as a woodland, pond and hard surface and grassed areas with large pieces of equipment. Brymbo Heritage Area A multi-million pound regeneration and tourism project in an important heritage area could get the backing of Wrexham County Borough Council After years

of development, consultation with residents and partners and early stages of funding, the Brymbo Heritage Group is ready to deliver the first phase of its vision for the area - a major scheme which will redevelop and promote the area’s historical assets.

Since the early 1990s, the Heritage Group has worked at redeveloping the former site of Brymbo Steelworks, which closed in 1990.

After attracting funding and support from a number of organisations – including the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Princes’ Trust – the Brymbo Heritage Group is now able to begin the development stage of its wide-ranging project.

Running from the spring of 2017 to the end of 2018, this phase of the project will involve environmental and engineering surveys; detailed design work and community engagement.

In preparation for its first phase of works, the Group – via the Brymbo Heritage Trust, set up to support the project – will begin making appeals for funding, and has approached Wrexham Council to back its bids for further funding.

A report recommending that Wrexham Council support the Trust’s proposals, and

that the Trust be supported in its work by officers from the council, will go to Executive Board next week.

It also recommends that the council write a letter of support on behalf of the Trust, which could then be used to help secure vital funding.

Cllr Hugh Jones, Lead Member for Communities and Partnerships, said:

“The proposals put forward by the Brymbo Heritage Group really are exciting and, worthy of our support.

The potential for this scheme to help revitalise the area really can’t be underestimated.

“Brymbo Steelworks was the last of a long line of industrial activity in the area, along with the many other industries – including mining, lead smelting, quarrying and brickmaking - that form a vital part of our industrial heritage. Brymbo and the surrounding areas contributed hugely to the Industrial Revolution

“As well as the Steelworks, Brymbo is home to the Fossil Forest – an incredible, world-class site of huge paleobotanical significance and Wales’ prehistorical past.

“I hope my Executive Board colleagues join me in supporting the Trust’s plans for regeneration, as our support will help them to deliver their proposals and attract further funding from a wider range of partners."

Burglary - Information please Text

Police are appealing for information after thieves broke into a pub in Bangor-on-Dee during the early hours of 20th February.

The incident was reported at 12.01am when three men were seen to break into the Buck House Hotel in High Street Bangor-on-Dee. They made off with a safe from the premises which contained the weekend’s takings.

The police helicopter was also seen over the Bangor-on-Dee / Ruabon area shortly after midnight.

Inspector Steve Owens said:

“There was no confrontation with anyone during the burglary. We deployed the NPAS helicopter and a dog team to search the area.

“However, the offenders are still at large, so I am appealing to anyone with information to please call police on 101 quoting reference V024080.”

Commitments to Rail Plans A far-ranging rail network improvement strategy, with the aim of improving links between North Wales and other regions of the UK, will be discussed by senior councillors tomorrow.

Growth Track 360, a prospectus drafted by a cross-border Rail Task Force made up of officials from North Wales and the Mersey Dee area, outlines a number of goals for the improvement of rail links to and from North Wales.

One of the chief aspirations set out in the document is for more frequent and faster rail journeys between North Wales and neighbouring areas, including the North West of England and the Midlands.

Growth Track 360 also outlines a number of infrastructure projects, including electrification, improved line speed, station investments and upgrades to transport hubs. The prospectus will be discussed at a meeting of the Executive Board tomorrow, with a report to members recommend that it be endorsed in principle.

Each of the local authorities in North Wales and the Mersey Dee area has been asked to support the document.

Members will also have the chance to re-affirm support for Wrexham’s local rail aspirations, including improved links to neighbouring areas such as Chester, Shrewsbury and Liverpool.

Cllr David A Bithell, Lead Member Environment and Transport, said:

“This is a key document to support economic growth in Wales, and for Wrexham in particular. It’s key that this supports the work and lobbying we have undertaken to support rail growth.

“Our aspirations are very well set-out: we want 30 minute services to and from Wrexham to Chester, Shrewsbury and to Liverpool via Shotton, and key to this is the completion of the redoubling of track from Chester to Wrexham.

“The future of travel needs to focus on rail and the significant investment to make journeys faster with greater options for destinations to key locations and airports. We also have a new franchise being undertaken in Wales, and I hope the successful bidder puts more investment in the ageing rolling stock.”
