I hope you all like the new design? The reason being is to be able to fit in as much in as possible. So, as well as our usual features and local news we now have recipe pages provided by local food producers and suppliers. This month’s recipe was created by French Flavour in Rhostyllen, and all the ingredients they can supply and deliver to you in a lovely gift box making for the perfect night in. News from Wrexham County Council Wrexham will play host to its second drive-in cinema in June. Following the success of the Valentine’s Day screening at Bangor-on-Dee Racecourse on February 12, the racecourse will play host to its second event on Saturday, June 3 and Sunday, June 4.

Six films will be screened over the two-day event, including classic family-favourites and huge box office hits.

Movie-goers will receive a large bag of free popcorn on arrival to enjoy during the films that will be screened on a giant 100 square metre LED screen.

Speaking about the event, Claire Luckock, Wrexham Council’s events coordinator, said: “This event comes following the huge success of the last drive-in cinema that was held on Valentine’s day. It’s something a little different and we have not seen anyone else doing anything else like this in the area so we have decided to do it again this summer. We’re expecting about 200 cars per screening so it’s looking to be another huge event. We have chosen a great range of films from chick-flicks to children’s films and something for the men too so there really is something for everyone.

We’re really excited for another great event this summer and we hope it is something we can carry on throughout the year.”

Drivers tune in to the film’s soundtrack through their vehicle’s sound system.

Tickets are priced £15 per car and can be bought at the Wrexham Tourist Information centre on Lambpit Street in the town centre, or by calling 01978 292015.

Organisers expect tickets for the summer event to sell out quickly.

Theresa May Gets a Warm Welcome in Gresford There was a lot of excitement in Gresford recently when we had a visit from the Prime Minister.

Theresa May was here to launch the Welsh Conservative Manifesto.

Mrs May arrived shortly before 11am at the Gresford Memorial Hall, before greeting Secretary of State for Wales Alun Cairns and Wrexham Conservative candidate, Andrew Atkinson.

The exact location of where Mrs May would be launching the manifesto was kept top secret until just a few hours before the event.

Police confirmed one 25-year-old man was arrested for breach of the peace, but was released without charge.

Supt Nick Evans who led the Policing response said “A mixture of on-lookers and protestors had gathered outside the location and in the vicinity of the venue.

In the main they were well behaved however one particular person, despite a number of warnings was arrested to prevent a breach of the peace.”

“The man was arrested due to his behaviour and conveyed to a local Police Station. He has since been released without charge.”

Along with the National TV and press, supporters, protestors and large amounts of Police and security, it was far from a normal quiet Monday morning in Gresford village!

New Volunteers Wanted at Chester National Trust Chester National Trust Volunteers (CNTV) is looking for new members. The group carries out land management tasks within a radius of 30 miles of Chester. Tasks include hedge laying, dry stone walling, path maintenance, planting trees, building tree guards, fencing, and many other tasks that NT Rangers ask us to carry out.

CNTV was formed over 25 years ago, a group of around 50 friendly people of varying ages, (18 - 70+), who enjoy friendship, working together and good fresh air. We work across Cheshire, the Marches (Chirk and Erddig) and the Wirral.

What constitutes a work day?

• You can choose to work on a Sunday, Tuesday or Thursday.

• Arrive at the site at 10am (it may be possible to share transport but your own car is an advantage) and work until 4pm (with regular breaks – mid morning, lunch and mid afternoon).

• Do what you feel capable of, enjoy the company of like-minded people and breathe good fresh air! There is always a task for everyone.

• No prior knowledge or experience is required, only a willingness to get involved and work hard. Be ready for any weather and any job.

After completing fifty hours of volunteering, there is the added bonus of receiving a National Trust volunteers card which entitles you to free entry at all National Trust properties, and discounts in some of their shops and cafes.

Local Police Advice Keeping North Wales Safe Responsible Dog Ownership Owning a dog brings a great deal of enjoyment but also carries with it many responsibilities. Dogs can be dangerous and a nuisance in many ways. Dog owners can do much to reduce the risks: Dog security It is your responsibility to ensure that your dog is not able to stray from home. Stray dogs can cause road traffic collisions, attack and seriously injure children, worry livestock and foul land. If a dog appears to be straying, it may be picked up by the dog warden and taken to local kennels. The Control of Dogs Order 1992 mandates that any dog in a public place must wear a collar with the name and address of the owner engraved or written on it, or engraved on a tag.

Out of control dogs It is important to ensure that your dog is kept under proper control at all times.

The Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 states that any dog is dangerously out of control if: • it injures a person, • or it behaves in a way that makes a person worried that it might injure them.

The law applies everywhere including private property. A court can order the

destruction of dogs found to be dangerously out of control. Where dogs attack other dogs or cause a general nuisance, action can be taken under the Anti-Social Behaviour Act 2014 to ensure that dogs are kept under proper control.

Changes to Dangerous Dogs Legislation The amended Dangerous Dogs Act came into effect in England and Wales on 13 May 2014. This applies to all dog owners no matter what size or breed. Changes to the Act means dog owners can now face prosecution if their dog attacks a person in their home or on any private property, except if they attack a trespasser. The maximum sentences for allowing a dog to attack someone have also been increased.

The maximum prison sentences in England and Wales are now: • Up to 14 years, from two years, for a fatal dog attack • Up to five years, from two years, for injury • Up to three years if an assistance dog is attacked (Guide Dog, Hearing Dog etc) The changes have also seen new preventative powers for the police and local authorities so they can act early to stop dog attacks before they occur.

News from Wrexham County Council New Website for Young People in Wrexham There's a brand new interactive website waiting for young people in Wrexham to login onto at www.youngwrexham.co.uk Once at the site young people will be able to access a range of information and different topics that are of interest now or in the future.

The Info section provides some great information in text and video format that signposts young people to the right services in Wrexham and Wales.

There's also an Ask Wrex Agony Aunt page which enables young people to post about any issue they may be have. It could be posted as a blog and other young people can offer their advice (all comments will be screened) or they can contact a Youth Information Worker in the Info Shop.

The site is not just great for young people but for parents, carers and other professionals in the Wrexham area.

Finance News with Hadlow Edwards Medwyn Edwards, Chartered Financial Planner, Director Hadlow Edwards Wealth Management In a world of low interest rates, ever-changing legislation and increasing life expectancy, this month’s article focuses on retirement planning. In April 2016, the Association of British Insurers (ABI) published statistics for the first full year since the Freedom and Choice pension reforms were introduced.

Whilst the figures showed that the majority of savers are taking a sensible approach, there were signs that a minority may be withdrawing too much from their pension fund. Moreover, that minority is doing so at rates that would see their money run out in a decade or less, if they are reliant on it as their main source of income.

The reality is, those taking 10% or more regularly from their pension pot are likely to run out of money, and if they’re relying solely on the state pension to see them through their later years, they will have to accept that their standard of living is going to drop significantly.

The State Pension provides a limited income (currently just under £160 for a single person, per week, based on full NI record), which falls drastically short of what is really needed to fund a comfortable lifestyle. So how do we avoid poverty in retirement?

First, decide how large a fund you will need.

One method is to multiply your target retirement income by 25. For example, if you think you’ll need £25,000 a year, aim for a fund of £625,000.

Next, select the most appropriate investment vehicles to achieve your goal. Property, investment bonds and ISAs have all proved popular over recent years but don’t offer the same degree of tax breaks as a pension. If your retirement is imminent you will obviously want to maximise your income from the money available.

Today there are probably more options as you approach retirement (whether you have a Final Salary/Defined Benefits scheme or a Defined Contribution/Money Purchase scheme) than ever before.

Retirees opting for drawdown pension should seek professional help to calculate how much money they can withdraw each year without running out. Spicy Saucisson Pasta

INGREDIENTS Olive oil for cooking 1 small red onion, finely chopped A pinch of dried chilli flakes or a ¼ tspn smoked chilli Garlic from l’ai Olive ½ a chilli saucisson, cut into bite-sized pieces 2 tbsn tomato purée A handful of sun-dried tomatoes, chopped 125ml red wine 1 small smoked garlic clove finely chopped/grated 250g/9oz short pasta, such as fusilli or penne, cooked according to packet instructions Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

METHOD Heat the oil in a frying pan over a medium to high heat. Add the onion and cook for two minutes.

Add the saucisson and garlic and cook for a further five minutes, or until golden-brown all over.

Add the tomatoes, the tomato puree and the wine, Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat drop in the chilli and simmer for 15 minutes. Season to taste To serve, stir the sausage mixture into freshly cooked pasta over a low heat, then pour onto a serving plate and top with fresh parmesan cheese.

Complete the meal with fresh rocket salad and a slice of garlic bread.

News from Wrexham County Council Two Wrexham sites shortlisted for Development Bank of Wales headquarters Finance Wales has shortlisted properties around Wrexham for the headquarters of the new Development Bank of Wales.

The news comes as Finance Wales, which will evolve into the Development Bank of Wales, confirms that last year was its busiest yet in the North Wales region.

Economy Secretary Ken Skates said: “My decision to locate the headquarters of our new Development Bank in North Wales is part of a wider commitment we have as a Welsh Government to spread prosperity and jobs across to every region of Wales.

“Having the bank in North Wales will mean it is ideally located to make the most of the huge opportunities associated with the growth of the cross border financial and professional services sector.

“Finance Wales is already doing great work in the North Wales area and has just confirmed that last year was its busiest yet in the region. We are now actively considering two potential sites in and around the Wrexham area for the Development Bank’s headquarters which we believe will allow us to build on this success.”

Giles Thorley, Chief Executive of Finance Wales said: “The strong appetite for investment we have seen over the last year is testament to the ambition in the North Wales economy. We don’t see that as the

end of the story and feel that the region has huge potential for further growth.

During the year we strengthened the investment team based in North Wales and we are currently looking at further recruitment which, once complete will more than double our presence.

“Finance Wales’s overall impact last year of £26.6m into 43 businesses is a great result but we shouldn’t be complacent. As we move forward towards the Development Bank of Wales it will be vital that the new organisation has a strong presence in all regions as we scale up to support more micro to medium sized enterprises.”

Latest figures show that last financial year Finance Wales directly invested £7.7m in North Wales securing private sector leverage from other investors of £19m.

The Development Bank of Wales will be tasked with providing more than £1 billion of investment support to Welsh business over the next five years and will ensure micro to medium businesses in Wales have greatly improved access to finance, support services and management advice.

It will create and safeguard over 5,500 jobs a year by 2022 and will be tasked with increasing annual direct investment to £80m by that date.

The Economy Secretary confirmed that senior management will be represented at the head office.

The Development Bank remains on course to launch later this year subject to regulatory approval.

From Frozen to red hot On Monday, April 17th 2017, a headline in The Times newspaper caught my eye:“From Frozen to red hot: the amateur Scandi choir set for global stardom”. The choir was from Norway – “Cantus”.

I read on, for the Cantus I knew was a choir which stayed in Bangor-on-Dee when they were competing in the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod in 1993. It is the same choir, still singing with the same conductor – Tove Rambo-Ystrad, who started the group in 1986. The year they stayed with host families in Bangor, they competed in the Female Choir competition, winning it with impressively high marks above ten other choirs. This meant they were eligible for the grand finale of the Eisteddfod- the Choir of the World competition, which they won.

Now Cantus is reaching new heights with singing in the “Sami” style, - an ancient song sound used as background to the popular film “Frozen” – a soundtrack which has spread over ten million copies in 2014 alone after the film’s release in 2013. A new Delta record by Cantus, called ”Northern Lights” is released on May 12, 2017.

We who were involved with the local visit in 1993 remember the choir well – for their dedication to their singing (rehearsals in the village hall in early mornings), their infectious exuberance when they won the competition, and their gratitude for the generous hospitality and the celebration party held in the village. I still have a charming letter of thanks from one of the four young people who stayed in our house, plus the programme of that year and a disc produced by the choir the following year. I know everyone who met them will be delighted to hear of their continuing success, and wish them well.

Viv Lavis Jones Bangor-on-Dee History Bangor Licensing Prosecution On the night of October 16 1930 near Bangor-on-Dee station an accident occurred when a car driven by Albert Davies of Blackwood Farm, Penley crashed and he subsequently died.

At Overton Petty Sessions Harrop Mallalieu, licensee of the Buck Hotel, Bangor, was charged with supplying intoxicating drink outside permitted hours namely at or about 11.30 pm. Thomas Sidney Preston of Penley and Geo. Griffiths. The Gwynt Farm, Bangor, were charged with consuming the alcohol. Mr J. Warburton Lee presided, Mr Cyril 0. Jones, Wrexham prosecuted and Mr W. F. Youde, Chester, defended.

PC Tom Parry said that whilst he was investigating the cause of the fatal accident, he ascertained that the party in Mr Davies' car had called at the Buck Hotel about 11.30 pm.

Mr Preston stated that the engine of the car was overheating and that they called at the hotel to obtain water for the radiator. Whilst Mr Davies was seeing about the water, he (Mr Preston) brought two glasses of port to the ladies in the car and stayed beside the car whilst they drank the port. He himself drank a 'baby' Guinness which Mr Mallalieu, the licensee, gave him to drink and he did not see Mr Davies drink anything. Mr Griffiths made a written statement corroborating Mr Preston's statement as did Mrs Mary Freeman of Threapwood, one of the ladies in the car.

Inspector Rogers had interviewed Mallalieu who made a written statement that the party called just as he was about to go to bed and Mr Davies asked for the water for the car.

He took Messrs Preston and Griffiths into his private room, while Mr Davies was seeing to the car, and offered them a drink, which they accepted. He also asked if Mrs Preston and Mrs Freeman would like refreshment and each of the ladies was given a glass of port, Mr Preston and himself each partaking of a small Guinness. Mr Albert Davies had some biscuits and cheese, but did not have anything to drink. Money was mentioned by Mr F Griffiths, but he (the licensee) refused to accept, as Mr Griffiths had been kind enough, a fortnight previously, to leave the sum of ÂŁ1 to be spent on customers at the hotel, on the occasion of his (Mr Griffiths') son's mariage.

In reply to Mr Youde, Inspector Rogers said he knew Mr Griffiths to be a man of repute in the district, and in further reply the Inspector stated that when he interviewed Mr Mallalieu the latter was perfectly frank about everything that had occurred at the hotel. Mr Youde asked whether Mr Mallalieu thought he was entitled to entertain the party, as they were his friends? The licensee replied that he did, but the inspector told him he should not make friends of his customers. The magistrates dismissed the case.

Praise For ‘Excellent’ Behaviour and Learning Attitudes at Wrexham School There was good news for staff and students at a local school after an independent monitoring report described behaviour at the facility as ‘excellent’.

The Maelor School, Penley, received the praise from GwE – whose role is to oversee the performance of schools in North Wales – following an inspection by officers last month.

The school, which is an 11-18 comprehensive English medium school, largely serves pupils from the local community as a significant number who travel from the centre of Wrexham.

In its report, GwE states: “Pupils have an excellent attitude to learning and have a high level of engagement, resilience and interest in their work.”

Commenting on behaviour at the school, it is noted: “Behaviour both inside the classroom and in their free time was excellent and there was a positive and co-operative atmosphere in the school.”

Responding to the report, Headteacher Simon Ellis said: “Of course we are delighted to have received such high praise for our school, we work hard to ensure that pupils behave well and focus on their work, it’s part of our core beliefs as a school.”

The officers also asked pupils to comment on their school, with the report stating: “Pupils have a strong sense of pride in the school as a learning community and they feel that they are well supported and valued.”

Lynn Lloyd Deputy Headteacher praised the hard work of the staff and the support of the parents. She said: “As a school community we work hard together to improve, I’m very pleased that this has been acknowledged by our visitors.”
