Local News International Wrexham FM Community Radio Station Learning The Association of Voluntary Organisations (AVOW) in Exchange Wrexham has been running a selection process to identify A new International Learning Exchange programme for students at Welsh universities is to begin next year. The scheme will enable learners and staff, both from Wales and those who come to study or work in Wales, to continue to benefit from international exchanges in a similar way to the opportunities that flowed from Erasmus+, not just in Europe but also further afield. The new scheme – which will run from 2022 to 2026 – will be supported by an investment of £65m from Welsh Government.

a group to take over the physical and financial assets from Calon FM that ceased broadcasting in January. Proposals have been received from a number of groups in Wrexham and further afield to progress the establishment of a new radio station.

John Leece Jones – Chairman of AVOW said “The Appointment Panel decided to appoint Wrexham Community Broadcasting as the group to take forward their proposal to Ofcom, who will need to approve their plans for the future. The group, who has a number of volunteers who were involved previously with Calon FM, will now be seeking support from across our community.”

The Appointment Panel included representatives from the world of Community Radio who were brought together to assist AVOW. A spokesperson from Wrexham Community Broadcasting said “After eight weeks and a very tough application process, we are absolutely delighted that we have retained the community radio license for Wrexham. So much hard work went into securing this license by an incredible group of volunteers with the best community spirit. Now we move forward, the real work begins getting Calon FM back on air doing what we do best - serving our community”.

Day Opportunities

Gresford Sailing Club Gresford Sailing Club is preparing for the coming season. When COVID restrictions allow; Model Boaters will be back on the water on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons.

21st Century Learning Environment Works have started to extend and refurbish Borras Park Junior school to create one Community Primary School on the site. The plans will see 10 new classrooms added to accommodate infant pupils. As part of the same scheme, a Welsh Medium School will open following the refurbishment for 210 pupils and 30 nursery places.

Headteacher, Rob Nicholson, said: “These are exciting times for the school and we look forward to seeing the works progress and to having modern facilities and an environment that will enhance the teaching environment for pupils and staff.”

Local News Don’t Fall for Parcel Scams Trading Standards are warning people to pay close attention to any emails received saying they’ve missed a delivery – this is a familiar scam that’s becoming more common as we all order more online. Even if you are expecting a parcel pay very close attention to the email.

It will probably be asking for a small fee to re-arrange delivery – that gives the scammers access to your bank details and you’re likely to lose a lot more than a delivery fee!

Trading Standards advice is: If a message is asking for money or personal or financial information in exchange for a package, it’s likely to be a scam.

Please forward it to the Suspicious Email Reporting Service (SERS) at report@phishing.gov.uk then delete it.

Check the ‘from’ address – is it from a company or organisation, or from a random email address? Always check out their website.

Look closely at the email – is there poor spelling or grammar? Scammers are getting better at making their messages look more professional.

Top three healthy habits you shouldn’t do without You might already know that I am very keen on things that are super good for you, fun and don’t take too much time. So I often get asked “What healthy habit is best if I want to feel good?”

Feel good? Let’s do one better. Let’s do: feel great. Confident in our own body. Fit. And happy. If that’s how you’d like to feel, then here are my top three habits for you: Sort out your morning routine A good morning routine is the key to setting up your day right. Anything from 5 - 20 minutes – it really doesn’t need to take long…. Simply take some time out and focus on yourself. Start with a freshly squeezed lemon juice to get your metabolism going. Follow that with a gentle stretch and get the body ready for the day after a long period of rest.

Keep moving Everybody is looking for the magic pill… the pill that will make us feel great and look good.

Wouldn’t that be great!? Well, good news - we've got it. Movement is it! Just keep moving girl... shake that booty as much as you can!

The national recommendation for a healthy lifestyle is 30 minutes of moderate aerobic activity per day. Try Hoola Hooping, go for a walk, do a bit of yoga… whatever lights you up.

Just keep moving.

Meditation Meditation is a funny thing. A lot of people think it’s a complicated practice that requires complete bliss, hours of your time and should only be practiced by full time hippies.

But here is the thing - meditation doesn’t have to be some ‘whoo whoo’ practice, or take up too much of your time. Simply sitting still for 3 - 5 minutes every morning, focusing on your breath will do the trick.

The Fron Choir Hits the High Notes Local male voice choir, Côr Meibion Froncysyllte, or The Fron Choir as they are more readily known, have built a world-wide reputation with their tours and the Voices of the Valley series of albums.

Keeping in Touch with Friends and Family

By JULIE GREGORY Do you remember back in the year 2000 when Friends Reunited first launched? How excited we were to trace old school friends and acquaintances we had lost touch with. Where were they now? Who had married who? Who became a brain surgeon? We were agog.

As with so many things, a matter of 20 years has seen immeasurable change and we now look to Facebook to keep in touch with friends and family. We vent our frustrations on Facebook and our contacts send a sympathetic emoji; share a happy event and animations of confetti, balloons, hearts or flying stars appear across the screen. Facebook is one platform where our contacts can demonstrate their support, offer a virtual hug and simply ‘be there’.

We were horrified to be told we could not see our friends and family in person at the start of lockdown 1. In a face-to-face conversation we consciously, or subconsciously, watch for triggers on the other person’s face to fully engage with them and check their emotions.

Are they happy, sad, confused? In the global pandemic, we felt the need to ‘see’ others even more keenly. They couldn’t pretend to be OK if we could see for ourselves that they weren’t. We needed to find a way to do this and Zoom, a video conferencing app previously aimed towards business users, has been the saviour of many.

Anyone with a modern mobile phone or tablet has the ability to Facetime or use the video call option on the popular WhatsApp messaging tool. Some of us had been using Skype to keep in touch and in business, there is Microsoft Teams. But it was to Zoom that most of us flocked. The ease of use was the main reason. It remains a simple download of an app, set up a personal login and off you go! Inviting someone to a Zoom ‘meeting’ is as simple as sending them a link.

According to a report which focused on the habits of internet users here in the UK, the number of Zoom users increased from 659,000 in January to 13 million in April 2020 - the UK Cabinet among them.

Without Facebook and FaceTime; Zoom and WhatsApp, 2020 would have been a very different year for many. Thank goodness technology was once again, way ahead of the game.

I, for one, am looking forward to seeing what comes next.

So, the roadmap is pointing in a sunnier direction and we have things to look forward to in the coming months, like hugging grandchildren, eating out, seeing friends and, yes, booking a holiday!

As countries open up across the World, we are starting to believe that we will be able to take a holiday this year.

Here is a quick update in the world of travel, which is up to date at the time of writing this: June 21st is the date when international travel should open up from the UK. Of course, this depends on other countries doing the same and when both travel corridors are open, then we are free to travel. Bear in mind, in the early stages it is likely that: • COVID testing will still be in place prior to travel and on arrival.

• A double vaccine will be required – with documentation.

• Insurance cover with appropriate COVID cover and medical expenses of up to £2 million will be required.

• Where interim rules apply, such as social distancing and mask wearing, you must comply with the rules of the country you are visiting.

Spring Lamb & Dauphinoise Hotpot SERVES 8 INGREDIENTS

For the topping

3 large carrots, cut into large chunks

4-5 potatoes (the roundest you have)

1 onion, roughly chopped

4 sweet potatoes (the roundest you have)

1 garlic bulb, split in 2

150ml double cream

Few sprigs rosemary & thyme

Few knobs of butter

2 bay leaves 1 tbsp tomato purée 2.5Kg shoulder of lamb on the bone 1 bottle red wine

METHOD Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. In a flameproof casserole dish that is large enough to fit the lamb, snugly scatter over all the vegetables and herbs, and roughly stir in the tomato purée. Sit the lamb on top, pour over the bottle of wine and season generously. Cover the dish and heat up on top of the stove, then put in the oven and leave undisturbed for 3 hours. Remove from the oven, leave to cool, then chill overnight.

The next day, remove all the hard fat from around the lamb and discard. Lift the lamb out of the dish, scraping away and keeping any of the jellified juices. Pull apart and shred the meat, discarding any large pieces of fat and the bones. Put the lamb back in the dish, then spoon over the jellied sauce and mix with the vegetables. Set aside.

Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. To make the topping, peel and neatly slice the potatoes by hand into rounds. Place in a pan of cold, salted water, bring to a hard boil and drain straight away. Tip back into the pan, pour over the cream and season. Now it’s up to you how fancy you want to be – you can pile the potatoes over the lamb casually, or you can arrange the potato and sweet potato in interleaving circles. Drizzle over any remaining cream from the pan and dot with butter. Bake for 40 minutes-1 hour until the top is golden and the sauce is just starting to bubble.

Why COP26 Matters

By EssentialsMAG environment contributor ROB RENOUF You’re possibly aware that something called COP26 is happening in the UK later this year. You may also know that it involves world leaders discussing the climate crisis.

But what exactly is COP26 and why is it so critical?

The 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (shortened to COP26) will take place in Glasgow in November. The fact that 25 previous COPs have left us facing a worsening climate and ecological emergency possibly doesn’t inspire much confidence - the last one, held in Madrid in 2019, achieved very little. However, there have been some successes - the Paris Agreement, which the US recently rejoined, was adopted at COP21, in 2015. The Paris Agreement’s goal is to limit global warming to well below 2oC, preferably to 1.5oC, compared to pre-industrial levels.

As it stands, most countries are not on target to do this. Climate Action Tracker estimates that current pledges and targets would result in warming of around 2.6oC by 2100. Pledges obviously need to be backed up with policies that are consistent with them - it’s estimated that current policies would result in warming of 2.9oC. COP26 is the most important meeting since Paris 2015. This is because the Paris Agreement involves a five year cycle of increasing ambition. Countries were supposed to make greater commitments in 2020, but most have yet to do so.

Another reason COP26 is so critical is that increasing commitments now represents the final realistic opportunity to limit global warming to 1.5oC. Based on current emissions, it’s estimated that the amount of carbon in the atmosphere could make warming of 1.5oC inevitable within seven years; delaying action until COP31 in 2026 won’t prevent this.

COP26 will bring world leaders together with the specific aim of addressing the climate and ecological emergency.

Essentially, if they’re unwilling or unable to commit to doing more at COP26, it’s unlikely to happen at all.

What can I do?

Contact your MP - if we want politicians to take more action we need to tell them.

The outcome of COP26 will probably be determined before November, so tell the government now and keep telling them.

You could also join or support a group campaigning for action.

We know what the solutions are - we just need to implement them faster and encourage other countries to do the same.

COP26 has to be the catalyst for meaningful global action.

Braided Friendship Bracelet YOU WILL NEED...

• Embroidery thread or similar • Sellotape or a safety pin

INSTRUCTIONS...

STEP 1:

Friendship Bracelets can be made from any number of threads, here I have used 4. You will need to cut your threads to the same length (generally around 60cm) and knot them together near the top. Secure your thread using either sellotape or you can tie them around a safety pin and attach the safety pin to a cushion which will hold your threads securely.

STEP 2:

Pick one thread and do 8 forward knots over all the other threads held together. To do this take the thread on the left and take it over the threads to the right (creating a 4 shape) and then under the same threads bring your original thread up through the loop, hold the underneath threads tight and pull up your thread to the top to create a knot.

STEP 3:

Now pick another colour and repeat the process until you have used all the threads once and then repeat the colour pattern.

STEP 4:

When you are happy that your bracelet is long enough, tie the end into a knot. You can also plait the ends and then add a little knot at the bottom.

By SALLY ELLINSON This month I want to share with you about our ‘More Than Food’ projects – the things we do alongside providing three-day food parcels to local people in crisis.

Baby Essentials: If anyone needs nappies, wipes, toiletries or baby food they can contact their Health Visitor or another professional and they will arrange to get these items from us. Alternatively, contact us directly and we can deliver. Foodbank volunteers can make referrals to the Baby Bank and Baby Basics projects in Wrexham, and advise on how to apply for Healthy Start vouchers and the Maternity Grant.

WINGS: Partnering with the Women in Wrexham Getting Support (WINGS) project we provide period products to anyone who needs them. Individuals can request items at our foodbank centres or by getting in touch directly. Groups / organisations and venues can request a WINGS box to have on their premises.

Community Money Advice (CMA): In November we launched a CMA connect service in Wrexham providing free one-toone advice from Money Mentors who help with budgeting and money management skills, helping you remain in control of your finances and move towards a future that is debt free. To book call: 07506 248737 or email: help@cmaconnectwrexham.org.uk Holiday Hunger: We partner with Church in Wales and other projects, providing food for children and families during the school holidays.

Eat Well Spend Less: We run two completely free courses in basic cooking and budgeting skills. One course has six weekly sessions, one is a single half-day course. They can be run via Zoom, or in any venue with basic facilities, and every participant receives free ingredients and course materials. If you are interested in us running this course for your group or at your venue then please get in touch.

Other Items: As well as food our centres hand out toiletries, tin openers, household cleaning items and pet food.

Signposting: When someone visits one of our centres they are given a warm welcome and the opportunity to chat with a volunteer who can see if they can signpost them to further help available.

A Dog is for Life, Not Just Lockdown

By JAYDE DAVEY from That Dog Between November and January, Dogs Trust received 1,800 calls about rehoming dogs between the ages of 6-9 months.

According to the kennel club 25% of new puppy owners did no prior research beforehand. This means dog trainers have seen an increase in behaviour issues due to people potentially picking the wrong breed, improper socialisation and puppies never having been left alone before.

I need help with my puppy!

Do some quick research on what your breed of puppy was originally bred for.

This can really help you understand some of their behaviours.

Socialisation doesn’t mean getting your new puppy saying hello to every dog or person that it sees, which can lead to future frustration problems anyway. Practice passing other dogs and people in the street; get them used to different sounds, build their confidence by exposing them to new objects and take your training out and about to different environments.

Whilst you’re still at home get your puppy or dog used to being left by itself. If you do this when you’re at home, you can listen out for any signs that puppy is becoming distressed. Even if you’re leaving them for just a few minutes at a time to begin with and building up duration, this will really help them cope when you go back to work.

If you’re struggling with how long you need to leave them, then a local dog walker or daycare or trainer might be an option.

What if you’re looking at getting a puppy?

Breed research - If you know your dog breed’s original purpose then you’re going to have a better understanding of whether that type of dog is going to fit in with your lifestyle or not.

The breeder - Puppy farms can be very well disguised, try to see if you can get some recommendations of breeders that other people have used. Check out breed groups online and search for some reviews too.

Deposits - Don’t put a deposit down unless you’ve physically seen the puppy. During lockdown, many people have been scammed out of hundreds of pounds in deposits for puppies that never existed.

Parents - Make sure you see at least one parent interacting with the litter. It’s very common for puppy farm breeders to show you the ‘mother’ in a separate kennel but not actually with the puppies.

Or, you can adopt a rescue dog Buying a puppy can be a great experience, but there are moral benefits that come with adopting a rescue dog. Giving a rescue dog a forever home is beneficial to both you and the dog, as it will not only mean you are doing a good deed but, are gaining the unconditional love of a dog in need.

Sarah Atherton MP Member of Parliament for Wrexham This month I have been focusing on broadband and charities. The issue of slow broadband speeds, always notoriously poor in Wales, took on a greater significance than ever once the lockdown began a little over a year ago. People were being expected to work from home, but the technology to allow them to do their jobs effectively was sadly lacking.

I have since been working closely with Wrexham Council to see what can be done.

While improving broadband speeds across the board is going to be a long-term project, we have made some good headway by intervening in individual cases to allow residents to attain better speed and stability of service than they had experienced previously.

As a result, I am encouraging anybody who wants to get the most out of their broadband speeds to make contact with my office, and I will arrange for the Head of Digital Services at the Council to advise how to achieve the best speeds possible.

On the charity side, many have sadly struggled through the pandemic.

Throughout the pandemic, people generously donated to health charities and food banks last year, but small and local groups who normally rely on village fetes, fundraising evenings or sponsorship to raise funds saw their incomes completely dry up.

Herbert Austin and the Austin 7 (Baby Austin) Part 1

By RICHARD HUELIN After having designed the first Wolseley cars at the end of the nineteenth century, in 1905 Herbert Austin set up his own car manufacturing business at Longbridge.

By the advent of the First World War, the Austin Company offered no less than seventeen models, when the factory was turned over to producing munitions. At the war’s end, the lack of demand for new vehicles was so poor that the company was placed in receivership in 1921.

Facing bankruptcy, Herbert Austin was determined to find a way forward for his company.

The Model T Ford was a great success selling in vast numbers. Convinced that there was a gap in the British market for an affordable car that combined the low cost of Ford’s product with the needs of the British market; Herbert Austin was determined to build an affordable smaller car more suitable for the British motorist than the Ford Model T. Unable to convince the receiver of the Austin Motor Company to invest in his ideas, Herbert Austin had no choice but to set up the project in secret. After setting up a drawing office in the billiard room of his home he recruited Stanley Edge, a seventeen year old draftsman, together with a several experts in the automotive industry as a design team.

Working together as a team it was decided to keep the car conventional and simple. Based on the existing 20hp the side valve engine was scaled down to 696cc with an RAC rating of 7.2hp. Cast iron was used for the engine block together with the detachable cylinder head; the crankcase was made of aluminium.

Drive was via a three speed gearbox to the rear axle. A novel feature was brakes on all four wheels, foot operated rear and handbrake front as used on motorcycles. It was thought that this would save brake linings together with lower running costs. The layout of the controls was in the method that soon became conventional, the first mass produced car to use this method.

The costs of creating the car were entirely borne by Herbert Austin; having patented the designs in his name he was able to charge the Austin Motor Company royalties of two guineas per car (two pounds ten pence). In 1923 the first year of production 2,500 Austin 7’s were sold, by 1939 290,000 had been sold and taken over as Britain’s equivalent of the Ford Model T.

Legal Advice in COVID Times Focused discussion leads to concise results and the most cost-effective outcomes.

Like the majority of other businesses, solicitors have had to adapt to new ways of working since the start of the coronavirus pandemic began a year ago. At GHP Legal, despite most of our lawyers still working remotely from home in line with government guidelines, we have been doing everything we can to ensure the continuation of our usual high levels of service.

Clients say they have been happy to communicate with us by phone and email rather than in person, and their patience when things have taken a little longer than they did pre-COVID has, in an odd way, created even closer working relationships. This new way of working has also brought other advantages emanating in saving solicitors time and clients money. One example where we have seen such ‘savings’ is in disputes. By writing out the history of a dispute before speaking to a solicitor, and listing and referring to all relevant documents or letters, clients have themselves found they have a clearer and more concise picture. This, in turn, has enabled them to draft a suitable response to those with whom they are in dispute, and then they have simply needed to forward it to one of our solicitors for checking and finalising.

If you ever find yourself needing to defend a dispute, it is worth checking at the outset whether you have legal expenses cover on your household or car insurance, credit card or bank account. If you do, you may be able to claim back solicitors’ fees. Some insurers might ask you to use a firm of ‘tied’ solicitors further away, but you have the right to ask to use a local firm, particularly if you have a good argument for using them, such as they have always acted for your family or you’re not good with IT or travelling.

When you instruct solicitors, always listen to their suggestions. Solicitors will concentrate on the key issues and keep things as simple as possible. Even if they challenge things you have said or done, they are on your side and just need to know the facts from every angle in order to help you and get the job done ASAP. For specific pieces of legal work it may be possible to agree a fixed fee, but remember that every time you send an email that your solicitor needs to read and respond to, it will cost you money. Being focused and achieving concise results will bring the cheapest and the best outcome for you.
