I hope you are all well and looking forward to Easter. Did somebody mention chocolate! Anyway it's nice to see the daffodils in full swing and Spring weather on its way. I was reminded recently that it was nesting time for many birds too. I was working away at home and kept hearing a loud tapping noise in the background. After trying to ignore it for ages I went to investigate, as it was really annoying me Victoria Lee - Designer by this time. To my surprise a blackbird was perched on the door handle to the outside door and seemed to be pecking at the glass and flying at the window. He would fly off when he saw me but come back moments later and start again. This continued for some time. At first I thought he was trying to attack my cat who was on the other side of the window and quite bemused by the whole thing. I popped some bread outside for him and hoped he would eat and settle down. But no, he was on a mission to peck his way through the glass into my bedroom or so it seemed. Moments later I was chatting to Victoria who works with me on the magazine, doing the design work, and she educated me. She said it was probably a male bird, having found a mate and getting ready to nest, and had caught his reflection in the glass and was attacking what he thought was another male bird, most probably feeling threatened. So I opened the doors and closed the curtains to get rid of the reflection for poor old stressed Mr Blackbird and that seemed to do the trick. So hopefully he can now nest in peace!
As many of you will be aware, local man and motoring article writer for essentials Terry Davies passed away last month, I have included a tribute to him in this month's edition and would like to send Pam, his wife, a big hug at this difficult time. He was such a lovely man, I will never forget him or the help and support he gave me with the magazine. It was a pleasure to have known him.

Register to Vote Don't Forget to Register to Vote With only a few weeks to go until the local government elections Wrexham Council are encouraging residents to make sure they are registered to vote. On Thursday 4 May voters in Wales will go to the polls for to select new councillors to sit for five years. In Wrexham 52 councillors will be elected across 47 electoral divisions.
The deadline to register to vote in this election is Monday 13 April.

Letting off Steam... Dear Jill I do hope you will be able to print my letter, not that I expect it to make the slightest difference but the need to get it off my chest was overwhelming. How sad it makes me feel to witness the devastation of the once beautiful historic village of Penley. Not only are we now having to endure the unnecessary "new builds" popping up here and there, destroying our GREEN FIELDS and blocking views of open countryside; it has now been brought to my attention the state of the copse at Llanerch Panna. I have visited this area recently and to my disgust, find it is being used as a DUMP with beer cans, plastic bottles & bags, builders rubble etc. etc. This area is a haven for wild life and should be respected as such. I must sound like a grumpy pensioner - have I lost touch with common decency, does it exist anymore, or is this so called progress? Name & address on file
Thank you for the phone call and message left from a local resident about gardening noise recently. With the nice weather garden work has started and with that inevitably comes the noise of the garden machinery to go with it. There are guidelines and timescales with regard noise though and please be thoughtful of your neighbours where possible. Art Exhibition: 13th - 21st May Bangor on Dee Art Group was formed around 1998 by the late John Donnelly. Originally called ‘Painting for Pleasure’ it began life as a spin-off from a Community Arts Project in Wrexham. The twelve members met on Wednesday mornings and, although things were run on a friendly basis, they held workshops and an annual exhibition at the Village Hall in Bangor-on-Dee.
In 2005 Trisha Lay took over management of the workshops, trips to galleries, sketching days and on-line orders for artists’ materials. At this time the structure and membership numbers had changed very little. In 2015, with growing membership, a committee and a constitution were formed. Julia Whitby became Chairperson and other responsibilities were shared out.
Today, 27 members still meet on a Wednesday and there is a waiting list. There are regular workshops held by members and guest artists. Sketching days, visits to galleries and a Christmas social are annual events. Each March the group hosts a coffee morning with an exhibition and the opportunity to buy members’ work. The Wrexham Art Group was founded 65 years ago by a group of amateur artists who attended a local Art School in the Wrexham District of North Wales.
The group flourished and meetings are held during the Winter months at Bethel Chapel Hall, Kenyon Avenue, Wrexham. Each meeting includes a tutorial and demonstration by a professional artist which is followed by a workshop. Members can work along with the tutor to explore or develop their skills with various art mediums. Whilst the group was never intended to be ‘self-help’ group, the interaction of working alongside other amateur artists allows the opportunity to develop personal skills. During the Summer regular painting days are held every two weeks and visits to a wide variety of outdoor locations are organised. These days are fun, very popular and offer the opportunity of sketching or painting out of doors in very good company. Wrexham Art Group successfully hold regular exhibitions of their members’ work which are held at various local venues. This year, for the first time, Wrexham Art Group’s Spring Exhibition is to be held in conjunction with Bangor-on-Dee Art Group at St. Dunawd’s Church, Bangor-on-Dee from the 13th May until the 21st May 2017, opening times of the Church are 10.00 a.m. until 4.00 p.m. and everyone is welcome. Both Art Groups are looking forward to working together.

Text Bangor on Dee History Edmund and Jaspar ap Owain were the sons of Owain Tudor and half brothers to Henry VI and they fought for Henry on the Lancastrian side in the Wars of the Roses. When Henry VI was murdered most of the other claimants to the throne had already been killed in the wars except for Edmund's son, Henry Tudor and Richard, Duke of York. After Edmund died Jaspar fought for his nephew to be crowned king. Roger Puleston was a distant kinsman of Jaspar and fought alongside him in many of the battles and was awarded an annuity of 10 marks on 10 September 1455 for his support.
The War of the Roses
Roger had also been close to Jaspar's brother Edmund and a letter of 19 September 1456 survives from Edmund in which he too grants Roger an annuity of 10 marks. Roger's parents were John Puleston and Angharad, the daughter of Griffith Hanmer and the granddaughter of Tudor ap Tudur ap Goronwy of Penmynydd, Anglesey.
The town of Denbigh changed hands several times between the Yorkists and the Lancastrians and in 1457, when the Lancastrians controlled Denbigh, Jaspar Tudor held the office of captain of the castle and Roger Puleston was its governor. Roger helped Jaspar to capture Denbigh castle again from the Yorkists after a three month siege in 1460 and held the castle as deputy constable.
After Jaspar took Denbigh he rode to Tenby Castle and from there wrote to Puleston urging him not to surrender Denbigh, 'To our Right trusty and well beloved Roger Puleston Esq. Keeper of the Castle of Denbigh... we pray that you will do your faithful diligence for the safe guard of it, as far as in you is, taking the revenue of the lordship there for the victualing of the same....' However, Puleston was forced to surrender in 1461.
The Lancastrians lost the battle of Mortimer's Cross in 1461 and Jaspar rode again to his heavily defended castle at Tenby and three weeks later wrote to Roger Puleston, now supported by Sir John ap Elis Eyton, at Denbigh Castle, exhorting them to be faithful and to prepare to avenge the beheading of Jaspar's father, Owain. Eyton was later rewarded for fighting at Bosworth, the last battle in which Richard III was killed and Henry Tudor took the throne as Henry VII. He was given estates around Ruabon and he was awarded with an annuity of 10 marks 'in consideration of the time and faithful service performed for us... in the course of our triumphal victory'. Eyton's monumental effigy can be seen in St Mary's church, Ruabon.
On 16 December 1470 Roger Puleston, esquire was appointed as sheriff of Flint. the Welsh poet Lewis Glyn Cothi (c1420-1490) described him in one of his poems as a powerful warrior who possessed great wealth, a noble mansion and an extensive territory. After the battle of Bosworth Henry VII rewarded Sir John Puleston of Hafod-y-Wern who had also fought for him, with an annuity of twenty marks for life, and made him a gentleman usher of the king's chamber.

Apprenticeship Schemes Local students have received valuable training opportunities thanks to local authority investment in housing improvement work. Over 60 Modern Apprentices have been taken on by contractors that carry out improvement work to Wrexham Council’s housing stock. The work is being carried out to ensure the Council achieves the Welsh Government’s Welsh Housing Quality Standard by 2020. Contractors who carry out housing improvement work for the Council are required to commit to Community Benefit schemes, which includes offering employment and training opportunities to local people. The apprentices cover a range of professions including electricians, plumbers, joiners, and plasterers. They typically spend one day a week studying in college and four days undertaking practical work on site with their contractors. A number of apprentices who study at Coleg Cambria in Wrexham were given an opportunity to meet Wrexham Council’s Lead Member for Housing, Cllr Ian Roberts and members of the Tenants Service Improvement Group at the Ruthin Road offices recently. The apprentices work for a range of local and national firms including Wates Living Space, Novus Property Solutions, GR Builders, CLC, Travis Perkins and GM Jones. Daniel Davies, an apprentice joiner with GM Jones, said:
“Being able to get real ‘on-site’ experience has been really useful for me. It’s paid work and it’s really helped me get to grips with the trade, going out to real properties, meeting customers and learning from the other professionals around me. I’m hoping to move on to a career in the trade once I’ve completed my course.”
The £56.4m investment for 2017/18 includes a £7.6m Major Repairs Allowance Grant awarded by the Welsh Government to help local authorities achieve the Welsh Housing Quality Standard. As well as training schemes, Community Benefits can also include refurbishing local facilities such as Community Centres, providing local employment and purchasing supplies from local businesses.
To date, over 70 employees have been provided with full or part time employment and over £63,000 has been donated as cash or in-kind to organisations or projects within Wales.

School Absence Parents who take their children out during school time are being targeted by police and social workers for potentially encouraging absence during the school day.
North Wales Police and Education Social Workers will be on the lookout for anyone who looks as if they should be in school and will be asking why the child is absent from school? They will also be on the lookout for unaccompanied young people of statutory school age in the town centre. Parents of truants can face a maximum fine of up to £2,500 or a term of imprisonment. A council spokesperson said:
"Taking children out of school is encouraging truancy and parents and carers should be discouraged from doing so. I hope many parents will think twice before doing it and make arrangements to either take advantage of the Easter holidays or the weekends.”
The Wrexham Community Education Patrol is a joint initiative run by North Wales Police and the Wrexham County Borough Council Education Social Work Team.
It was originally developed in 1995 and updated in 2016 following concerns from traders and other agencies within the town centre about the number of children of school age being absent from school. It has been cited by the Welsh Government as an example of good practice, with other authorities visiting Wrexham for advice on setting up their own schemes. The Community Education Patrols are an integral part of the Local Authority’s commitment to improving school attendance and achievement. 28 Years Later...
Launched in 1989, Premier Windows and Conservatories, Oswestry is this month celebrating its 28-year anniversary. The family-run company’s journey, spanning almost three decades, has helped it to build a first-class reputation locally for quality workmanship, attention to detail and excellent after-sales service. March 2017 marks 28 years since duo Paul and Caroline Chenery, featuring a perm and other questionable 80’s attire, embarked upon the new adventure of opening a local glazing installation company.
With a humble beginning the pair originally started out operating from home, quickly expanding to open their first showroom at 75 Beatrice Street, Oswestry in 1990. It was a modest team, with Caroline taking the role of Saleswoman and Administration and Paul Surveying and fitting.
By the year 2000, Premier Windows and Conservatories had grown vastly, prompting the move to a much larger showroom in Smithfield, and were employing an expanding team of eight fitters. Apples don’t usually fall far from the tree, and in 2003 the couple’s eldest son Ben
became Premier’s General manager, having worked his way up from Fitter. Ben’s promotion was then swiftly followed by the appointment of Andrew Turner, the company’s very much valued Administrator.
2008 market two more huge milestones for the company, seeing both the opening of its current showroom in Moreton Business park, Gledrid, and in taking the exciting step to become a member of the UK-wide Conservatory Outlet Network. Enjoying further growth since then, the company now offers a range of some of the most innovated products in the industry, including triple glazing and energy rated windows, bi-folding, French and stable doors, as well as modern conservatories and Orangeries.

Sponsors Wanted Council appeals for sponsors for to help improve look of area’s roundabouts
Businesses in Wrexham will have the chance to promote themselves via Wrexham County Borough Council’s roundabout sponsorship scheme.
The scheme started in 2007, and since then has gone from strength to strength, improving the environment for residents and visitors. Recent work under the scheme saw bee-friendly wildflowers planted on the Croesnewydd Road. Companies interested in promoting themselves via the sponsorship scheme have a number of sites to choose from. Businesses which sponsor a roundabout will have their company name, logo and website highlighted on the roundabout they sponsor – along with one of their particular services or products. Funds raised will go towards maintenance and development of the roundabouts and other planting throughout the County Borough. Councillor David A. Bithell, Lead Member for Environment and Transport, said:
“The Roundabout Sponsorship scheme has proven a success in the past 10 years, giving businesses the chance to promote themselves whilst helping us to maintain some of the most visible parts of our roadways.
“I encourage any businesses interested to contact our Environment and Planning department.”

Text A Tribute to a Lovely Man I was honoured to attend the funeral of Terry Davies last month, and pay my respects to such a lovely man.
Standing room only at the service, which wasn't a surprise, he was as popular with most people as he was with me.
I will miss our phone chats and his monthly motoring news, which were always well received. More importantly I will miss his words of encouragement. He was truly an inspiration and had led such an interesting life, especially once he started writing, off all over the world and meeting many famous and interesting people. I loved to hear the stories and listen to his very calming voice. The service was such a lovely send off I hope Pam found it a little comforting at such a difficult time.
