Are You a Good Communicator?

By EssentialsMAG motivation contributor SASHA KENNEY Good communication is a base for quality relationships with others at home, at work and with friends. I don’t know about you, but I think there is always room for improvement.

Here are some top tips on how we can communicate better: 1. Listen more than you speak There is a good reason why we have two ears and one mouth – a reminder of what is important! Listening is key to a healthy relationship. Research shows that we only really listen 50% of the time. We are mostly waiting for our chance to speak, wanting to make our point. Listening means to enter into the world of the other person, to intend to understand them, even when we disagree with what they are saying.

2. Try to send a clear message There is a huge difference between just saying something, and saying something with intention. Say words which are meaningful and will drive the point home.

Keep the goal in mind - whether you are in a job interview, business meeting or having a conversation with your partner.

When you know where you’re going with your words, it is much more likely that your message will come across crystal clear.

3. Make use of your body language We communicate with more than just words. Everything that is in our heart and mind is expressed through our body, our facial expressions, body language, eye contact and the tone of our voice.

All your non-verbal gestures are intuitively picked up and understood by others. For effective communication you need to be able to master positive body language.

Food for thought...

Professor Mehrabian combined the statistical results of the two studies and came up with the now famous rule, that communication is only 7% verbal and 93% non-verbal.

The non-verbal component was made up of body language (55%) and tone of voice (38%).

So, go on, and start a meaningful conversation. Use your body language effectively. And most importantly: Listen to understand, not to reply.

Ian Lucas MP for Wrexham I would like to begin by saying a big ‘thankyou’ to everyone who attended this year’s Singing Streets choir festival in Wrexham town centre. It was our fourth, and biggest, event yet, with 31 choirs involved.

I’m grateful to everyone who helped make the event such a success, from our sponsors, partners and volunteers to the members of the public who turned out in great numbers and, of course, our wonderful choirs.

Singing Streets is part of an impressively long list of cultural events to be staged in Wrexham, which now bills itself – quite rightly – as ‘the festivals town’. The aim is to encourage people to come into the town centre, to present Wrexham in a positive light and celebrate the arts.

It is good that so many people want to come to our festivals in Wrexham and I wish it easier for them to get here on public transport, as I appreciate the fact that our present system is not adequate.

I have been pressing for improved transport links during my time as MP and, rest assured, it remains a priority of mine.

Wrexham rather than further down the line at Chester. A lot of resilience was required but we got there – thanks also to the commitment of Welsh Government Rail Minister, Ken Skates, the advent of Transport for Wales and help from Steve Rotherham, Liverpool City Region Mayor.

Further rail improvements are on their way.

The creation of the Transport for Wales public body, modelled on Transport for London, has been a positive move. It creates a structure within which we can begin to design transport systems which serve people and are not purely driven by the profit motive.

We need to have much more integrated transport in our communities, applying new technologies and ways to travel, with interchangeable tickets for bus, rail and any other form of travel. We also need a plan the development of sustainable transport systems, including cycling and more healthy methods of moving around.

Such improvements a require investment, of course. And through my work in Westminster, particularly with the Labour Towns group, I will continue to make sure towns like ours are not left behind.

Advances have been hard-fought but we are seeing progress. For example, earlier this year saw the reopening of a direct train link from Wrexham to Liverpool – the first direct service since the mid-1970s, made possible by the reopening of the Halton Curve.

Pack Your Bags for a Great Adventure...

America’s Pacific Northwest USA Specialist Howard Davies takes us on a road-trip through America’s Pacific Northwest. After over 190 visits to America, covering some 37 states the question is always “where next?”

In June this year, I toured the Pacific Northwest, revisiting some old favourites and taking in some amazing new sights.

Portland is perhaps one of the most accessible of American cities, and, with easy to use and inexpensive transportation, all the key sights are so easy to take in. Port Townsend was our first driving stopover with a wide choice of wonderful B&B’s.

Worthy of a couple of nights especially as nearby Port Angeles has a ferry service to Victoria on Canada’s Vancouver Island.

Those keen on hiking may wish to allow an extra night or two to explore as walking trails are abundant. The unique microclimate in this region is reflected by our accommodation - The Rain Forest Village overlooking Lake Quinault.

Heading south, Cannon Beach was one of the highlights of the Oregon coastline which, whilst spectacular in parts, still plays a significant role in the logging industry so choose your stops wisely. Microbreweries abound, so getting the car parked up for a night or two was a bonus.

Moving inland during the summer brings generally warmer temperatures even though Crater Lake National Park was still partly closed in late June whilst snow was being cleared! Our stay in Grants Pass was at the Weaksu Inn and was amazing! The

drive up the Willamette Valley and a visit to Kings Estate Winery was further enhanced by the tax-free dining and shopping throughout Oregon that is worth around an extra 10 cents to the Pound!

One of the highlights along the Columbia River Gorge is Multnomah Falls and, be warned, it gets extremely busy and parking is limited. Get there early! Throughout the Pacific Northwest the ‘Farm-to-table’ philosophy provided exceptional dining including the unpretentious Sixth Street Bistro & Pub in Hood River, a town that attracts all ages for a host of water based activities in this natural ‘wind-tunnel’ where the gorge narrows.

Walla Walla was a welcome break from our busy schedule with two nights to sample this ‘Foodies town’ in the middle of another great wine area. The restaurant at our sumptuous hotel – The Eritage is amazing.

The town itself feels somewhat upscale yet unpretentious making us feel as if we were returning family and not just passing through. Heading north, The Cascade Loop was a surprisingly quiet drive through one of America’s most unspoilt regions with time to detour via Pybus Public Market in Wanatchee, the quirky ‘Alpine Village’ of Leavenworth, the stunning Methow Valley and an overnight and dinner at the breath-

taking Sun Valley Lodge. This was followed by leisurely drive through North Cascade National Park as we headed for the ferry at Anacortes. The ferry across the Friday Harbor was 90 minutes of beauty and tranquillity broken only by the occasional seaplane overflying to one of the remote passing islands. From Friday Harbor we embarked on a state-of-art vessel with Maya’s Legacy and experienced whale watching in the company of marine naturalists and a handful of other guests – highly recommended!

Rather than spend the final nights in Seattle, we opted for the Cedarbrook Lodge which, although listed as an airport hotel, was amazing and very quiet! Easy access into the city, fantastic on-site dining and convenient for a day trip south to Mount Rainier. Seattle is a very popular port for cruises to Alaska and, with a lot of what we saw could be covered in a scaled down pre, or post, cruise itinerary.

Keep hydrated. Drink lots of water when travelling at higher altitudes (same goes for longhaul flying).

Gardening Tips and Advice October - The Autumn Chill Sets in Although we had some warmer days over September, the autumn is now deďŹ nitely here for real, and it feels colder. It's a beautiful time of year, with the trees changing colour.

Sometimes it may seem pointless raking, when the wind blows even more leaves onto the lawn, but just think of all the lovely leaf-mould you can make! It's also time to start preparing for early frosts.

Divide established rhubarb crowns to create new plants.

2.

Cut back perennials that have died down.

3.

Divide herbaceous perennials.

4.

Move tender plants, including aquatic ones, into a greenhouse or conservatory.

5.

Plant out spring cabbages.

6.

Harvest apples, pears, grapes and nuts.

7.

Prune climbing roses.

8.

Finish collecting seeds from the garden to sow next year.

9.

Last chance to mow lawns and trim hedges in mild areas.

10. Renovate old lawns or create new grass areas by laying turf.

Councillor Sarah Atherton The Strength of Community Spirit Open spaces play a pivotal role in our communities and we know they benefit people both mentally and physically.

They are areas where we can move, breathe, run and play. They drive social cohesion, combat loneliness, and enable us to connect with nature whilst bolstering community spirit. However our allimportant parks and green spaces are under threat. With Wrexham Council’s Local Development Plan (LDP) nearing adoption, Wrexham has seen a significant influx in speculative planning applications, where landowners and developers are attempting to capitalise through profitable developments on lucrative green spaces, prior to the LDP coming into force. Of late, there have been applications for large scale housing developments on parks and green spaces throughout Wrexham such as Llay, Gresford, Rhosnesni, Maesydre (9 Acre Field) and Rossett. Although the developments in Llay are well underway with the usual delays and ‘unforeseen circumstances’ causing major disruptions for residents; the Vicarage Lane Action Group successfully influenced the decision to refuse planning permission to a development in Gresford.

Unfortunately, if a planning refusal is overturned by the Inspectorate in Cardiff, only huge amounts of money and escalated legal action can make any impact at this stage. This course of action is out of reach for most community groups. Some community councils oversaw the production of Community Place Plans, which enabled communities to identify the future development they would like to see for their neighbourhoods. Place Plans were

then submitted to the local authority for consideration in their LDPs. By doing this, the wishes and needs of the community could be reflected.

The popularity of communities mobilising themselves into protest groups is growing.

I recently met with a group of residents who will soon form the Dean Road 'Playing Field' Action Group, which aims to stop the development on their playing field. The effectiveness of residents and community councils working in unison is more likely to make Wrexham County Borough Council listen and act upon the voice of local people. Whilst the majority of people welcome development in our town, it should not be at the expense of local residents and for the capital gain of developers. A balance needs to be struck.

If you have an issue in your local area, step forward. There will be others who feel the same. There are many associations, such as 'Planning Aid Wales' or 'Fields in Trust', able to help residents take control over how their neighbourhoods evolve, and I am always happy to lend my support to local groups. EssentialsMAG Tasty Recipe

Smoked Mackerel Dauphinoise INGREDIENTS

SERVES 4

750 ml double cream 750 ml milk 8 large peeled potatoes (King Edwards/Maris Piper) 3-4 crushed garlic cloves Approximately 4 smoked pepper Mackerel fillets (skinoff) 100g Gruyère cheese (or cheddar) Salad or vegetable of your choice For extra mustard sauce Reserve 400-500ml of the cream mix (see below) 3 tbsps of whole grain mustard 1-2 tsp honey (optional - but it brings out the mustard flavour)

METHOD 1.

Preheat oven to 160ºc. Slice the potatoes thinly, approximately 3-4mm.

Keep potatoes in water to prevent oxidation (browning).

2. Cook the potatoes in lightly salted water for five to ten minutes until a knife goes in easily, then drain.

3. Heat both the milk and cream together in a large pan with the crushed garlic and season (but under season - the mackerel will be salted or peppered already!) bring to the boil then simmer for a few mins. Remove from the heat.

4. Line a roasting tray with grease proof paper allowing an overlap on the sides.

5. Add a layer of potatoes to fill the base, (similar to a lasagne). Flake the smoked mackerel fillets over the sliced potatoes allowing for two layers of the mackerel mix, repeat with another middle and top layer of the potatoes.

6. Pour just under half the garlic cream mix over the potatoes allowing enough to cover the potatoes. We cover with greaseproof on the top followed by tin foil. Oven bake for 30 minutes. To brown for a final ten minutes, turn the oven up to 190ºc.

Prepare your choice of salad or vegetables.

For the last five minutes remove the foil and grease proof paper and sprinkle with cheese, return to the oven to caramelise.

9. To make the mustard sauce - add the mustard to the remaining garlic cream, add honey (if using). If the mixture is too thick thin with a tablespoon of water or wine. To thicken the sauce just reduce for two minutes more.

You are looking for a sauce that coats a spoon.

10. Spoon over a served portion of dauphinoise allowing your guests to see the caramelised cheese. Extra sauce can be served at the table.

11. Serve with vegetable or salad of choice and glass of dry white wine.

12. Any left-over sauce and mackerel fillets can be made into a chowder with cooked vegetables/potatoes, warmed up with some stock and sweetcorn.

Plastic Pollution

By EssentialsMAG environment contributor ROB RENOUF Plastic is a lightweight, versatile material that can be put to many good uses, but plastic pollution has become a huge issue.

From an environmental perspective, the primary problems with plastic are the sheer amounts being produced and the inappropriate ways in which we’re using it.

• Almost all plastic has been produced since 1950, but the rate of production has increased massively, with over half produced since 2004.

• Only 9% of the plastic ever made has been recycled.

• Over 40% of plastic produced is packaging.

• We generate about 300 million tonnes of plastic waste each year – almost the weight of the planet’s entire human population!

Single-use plastics such as packaging are a particular concern, as they have an extremely short useful life, yet can remain in the environment for hundreds of years.

Recycling has an important role to play, and I wouldn’t want to discourage anyone from doing it. However, putting our plastic in the recycling bin doesn’t guarantee that it will be recycled. Reducing the amount of plastic we buy and throw away is the most surefire way of minimising plastic pollution.

If like me you’re concerned about plastic packaging, one of the easiest things you can do is tell the shops. You can do this in person or online, and

some supermarkets even offer incentives for providing online feedback.

Plastic Free Wrexham is a group set up to try and tackle the issue of plastic pollution locally. They’re currently seeking the support of local people and businesses in working towards plastic free accreditation for Wrexham. A similar campaign by Plastic Free Llangollen resulted in their town being awarded Plastic Free Community status by Surfers Against Sewage in 2018.

Plastic Free Wrexham are hoping to hold a mass unwrap at a local supermarket in the coming months. These events are done with the agreement of the store and anyone can take part. Customers who wish to participate simply remove any plastic packaging they consider unnecessary from their shopping as they leave the shop. The packaging is collected up by volunteers and returned to the store at the end of the day to be recycled where possible. Mass unwraps are a way of highlighting the issue of excess packaging and showing the stores that many customers don’t actually want it.

How many times have you recently heard the word ‘uncertainty’ I wonder? Apparently we are ‘living in uncertain times’ and ‘all the uncertainty out there’ is the big problem.

Well for sure the last few months have been extraordinary for the country as a whole (and there’s still more to come) and Brexit as a topic appears far from finished - but my question is; don’t we always live with uncertainty?

Of course the answer is - yes. None of us can predict the future, so we are in the truest sense of the word ‘uncertain’. The real issue is how you cope with uncertainty. Are you tolerant of it, do you really embrace it and seek advantage, or does it make you a nervous wreck and stressed?

It’s fair to say that my day job does not involve me buying products from overseas nor do I have to sell widgets abroad either. That is tough right now we know. My day job focuses on helping our clients perhaps ‘see through’ some of the myth, some of the uncertainty if you like - and keep right on track with their plans.

A longstanding client of mine a few weeks ago corrected me when I commented that the country and the Investment markets in particular have had over three years to get used to the idea of the UK leaving the EU. My belief was that three years is normally enough time to think about most things - and perhaps remove some of the uncertainty. My client simply pointed out that it’s over four years this topic has been around now - given that

whilst the vote was in June 2016 the start of the process was a year earlier. I thought it was time to have a look at just what’s happened in that time.

Interestingly a look back over the last few years (and we can do that with ‘certainty’) shows that 2016 was an exceptionally strong year for investors. If you ‘missed’ that one it was costly. The calendar year of 2017 was strong, whilst 2018 was doing well until the autumn when US/China trade issues in part caused most markets to show a loss over the year.

Coming right up to date, if you had only just tracked the FTSE100 or FTSE Allshare indexes this year - you would have seen gains since the beginning of January of over +9%. Of course markets will rise and fall but those who have stayed invested have once again been well rewarded.

Lastly I can’t help recall and contrast the uncertainty leading up to New Year 2000 (was that really almost 20 years ago?) and the much feared ‘Millennium Bug’ and where we are today with Brexit. The clocks were going to stop, your computer was going to implode, planes were going to be grounded - I could go on. What happened? Not a thing.

I will continue to make my calls and develop my plans based on facts. You are welcome to come and talk to us if you wish to as well.

A Leap of Faith What happens when you reach your mid-thirties and want a complete career change? As I write this, not only are the days closing in, but also the temperature is dropping more than I would like. However, don’t let that stop you getting out. Just be prepared by following some simple steps: • Buddy Up - Making the time to meet up with a friend once a week to exercise is a great way to boost your motivation.

Getting out and getting active, whether it’s a run, bike ride or a walk with a friend or a group will give you the extra determination to make you turn up and count that one off the list.

• Warm Up Inside - Before you head out of the door, move around inside to get the blood flowing and gradually raise your heart rate. This will help your body to feel ready for exercise and make working out easier. Run on the spot or walk up and down your stairs to warm-up your muscles. Just a small amount of time can have a big impact on reducing the chance of injury.

• Get Out of Those Wet Clothes! - Damp clothing increases heat loss. Immediately after your workout, remove sweaty clothes and get into a hot shower or, if you’re not ready for a shower yet, at least put on some dry clothes to get the heat back in your body. This can be easy enough to forget as you may already feel warm.

• Don't Forget to Drink - Even when it’s cold, you still lose water through sweating, so it’s important to stay hydrated throughout the colder months.

Keep your fluids up by always having

water to hand when you exercise, as we can all easily forget this one vital point and become dehydrated.

One crucial area to pay attention to is visibility when you are outside (especially after dark). If you are out running or walking then it is important to make yourself as visible as possible. I myself have been running without any form of visibility or lights in the past and, luckily, I had no issues, but once I did have a close call. Since then, I have always had the essentials of reflective clothing and bright lights when I’m out running or on my bike.

For anyone interested, I will be running Marford Hill every Wednesday at 6.00pm, you can join me at your own pace, be that running, walking or crawling! My plan is to do it three times or more on the day, so feel free to come and tackle the hill with me.

(I will start from the Co-op at the top of Marford Hill, Chester Road, Marford).

Cantorion Rhos Scholarships Cantorion Rhos is a mixed choir of some 40-50 voices whose professional and occupational qualifications are numerous and varied. It is the policy of the choir to encourage local youngsters who have musical talent and who may later become serious students of music at college or university. Some have gained experience by singing with the choir and others have been assistant accompanists.

Cantorion Rhos Scholarships With ever increasing cuts in educational budgets for the teaching of music in schools we support and encourage young vocalists and musicians by giving them the opportunity to perform and delight audiences as they commence their advanced studies to enable them to embark on a professional musical career. For several years we have given young pianists in their final years at senior school the opportunity to join us as Deputy Accompanist and provided them with tuition and guidance to accompany us at rehearsals and ultimately perform for us in concerts. This initiative became our initial scholarship scheme.

In 2018 we increased our scholarships to include young vocalists aged 16-25. We offer up to four students, one soprano, alto, tenor and bass, a scholarship of £250 per annum where they receive vocal coaching, attend rehearsals and perform in choral concerts.

The primary aim is to give them a solid grounding in choral and solo vocal musical performance before going on to advanced music studies. Many of our young people have gone on to study at Universities and the RCM London and the RNCM, Manchester.

As temperatures drop and it gets dark earlier, The RSPCA receive many calls about the welfare of pets and wildlife.

Check out their top tips to keeping animals safe and warm in autumn.

Keeping safe in the dark Always wear reflective clothing to make yourself visible when walking near roads in the dark. And don't forget your pets!

Fit your dog and cat with a reflective collar - but make sure only a quick release collar is used for a cat.

Watch out! Animals on the roads The RSPCA see more injured wild animals coming into their care, who have been involved in road traffic accidents, as the nights grow longer.

Road traffic accidents involving deer are especially common during the rut, which can occur from mid-July to December (depending on the species).

Take note of warning signs, drive with extreme caution (especially early morning and evening) and report collisions with deer to the police.

Fireworks and bonfires during the festive season Build bonfires as close to time of lighting as possible, and check them thoroughly for animals before lighting, this can help save the lives of hedgehogs and other small animals. Loud fireworks can be terrifying for animals.

Bat alert!

Bats look for suitable hibernation sites around October. Pipistrelles are the most likely to roost in buildings during winter.

Bats and their roosts are protected by law in the UK - so you must not disturb or harm them in any way.
