is a company that provides access to the Internet. These include BT, Plusnet, Sky and many others.

Bluetooth: Bluetooth is a wireless communications technology. It allows shortrange connections between two or more compatible devices such as smartphones, tablets, headphones or car entertainment systems.

Operating system: An operating system (or OS) is the software that manages all of a device’s processes and allows applications to run. The most prominent operating systems are Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X (pronounced ten not ex) on computers, and Android and iOS on smartphones and tablets.

Bookmark: A bookmark is a saved link to a particular web-page stored within a browser.

Broadband: Broadband is a high-speed connection to the Internet. Broadband requires a router to share the connection with devices.

Browser: An application that allows you to access the Internet. Popular web browsers include Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge and Microsoft Internet Explorer.

Cache: When you read a web page in your browser, the data is “cached” (stored on your computer). The next time you want that page, your browser accesses it from the cache, so the page loads more quickly. Sometimes, this means you don’t get the most up-to-date information, and you need to clear the cache by refreshing the page or emptying the cache.

Cloud computing: Cloud computing refers to services that store information on servers remote from a your local device, which is then accessed via the Internet either in your browser on via a dedicated application.

Cookie: A small piece of code that is created by a web server and stored on your computer in order to store your particular preferences or track your usage.

ISP: An internet service provider (or ISP)

Search engine: A search engine is a website that allows you to search for information on the Internet. Search engines index websites and their databases in order to make them searchable by keyword. The most popular search engines are Google and Bing.

SSL: SSL (or secure sockets layer), is a protocol that allows Internet users to send encrypted messages across the Internet.

A web address that begins with “https” indicates that an SSL connection is in use, and some browsers now label “http” websites as “Not Secure”.

URL: A URL (or unique resource locator), which is often known as a website address, is the string of characters you type into a browser to access a particular website.

For example: http://www.bbc.co.uk Wi-Fi: Wi-Fi is a technology that allows devices to communicate via a wireless signal.

Essentially, it means you can browse the Internet without having to plug your device into the phone line directly.

Budget Break in Budapest Budapest (Hungarian pronunciation “boo-dah-pesht”) is intriguing, fascinating and full of hidden treasures.

Whatever the duration of your break a 24-hour stop over or a seven-day visit there is an abundant variety of historical attractions, eateries, drinking hotspots, vibrant nightlife and unique outdoor spa experiences to whet any appetite.

Budapest exudes youthful energy yet also boasts a world-class classical music scene; and, with an eclectic mix of history, culture, nature and architecture, there truly is something for all ages and interests.

The Diary of a Chainsaw Sculptor

BY AWARD-WINNING SCULPTOR SIMON O’ROURKE Game of chainsaws…

It’s not every day you get an email asking you to be one of 18 artists selected to promote the final season of a TV series as big as Game of Thrones, and when it happened, if I’d been sitting on a chair I may well have fallen off! I’ve been creating sculptures for the last 17 years from standing tree stumps and felled timber. It’s an incredible feeling to make a living from doing what you love, and yet it’s been hard work at times, with long days and moments where I wanted to throw in the towel and get a ‘normal job’. Any self employed person will agree that no matter what you’re doing, the business has a tendency to dominate your life!

I’ve flitted between “I don’t deserve this”, and “I’m proud of what I’ve achieved” on an equal basis over the years. I’ve also had my fair share of failures and successes. Every failure is a stepping stone to success or so they say, which is much harder to hear when you’re a day away from not being able to pay the mortgage and awaiting payment from a client!

Despite the difficulties of a self sustaining lifestyle, I can honestly say it has been the best time of my life. Having a wonderfully supportive wife is the reason I’m still sane and Liz is great at bringing me back down to earth when needed!

Back to the present, and the moment I received the email from a marketing agency in New York, with the strange enquiry, “We’d like you to be involved in a project for one of our clients, but we need you to sign this NDA first!” As a fan of the show it made my day as you can imagine, and was made even better by the brief. HBO wanted to use fans of the show who in following the series had produced artwork based on the characters and themes.

The brief was simple, I was to receive a prop from the original series and design something around it. My prop was the dragon eggs, and their request was that I design a display casing for the eggs as if they were being presented to Daenerys for the first time. Whether this means something to you or not, Game of Thrones is the most popular series of its kind in the world, and has a huge following, meaning at the very least, my name and my work are being promoted to a huge audience!

By the time you read this, I’ll have been given permission to share the pictures and videos on social media, so please take a moment to look at what I created!

EssentialsMAG Tasty Recipe

Rhubarb & Vanilla Jam MAKES 3 x 1LB JARS

INGREDIENTS 1kg rhubarb, weighed after trimming, cut into 3cm chunks 1kg jam sugar (or 1kg caster sugar plus 1 x 8g sachet pectin - we used Tate & Lyle) 2 vanilla pods, halved lengthways Juice 1 lemon

METHOD Put a small plate in the freezer.

Put the rhubarb into a preserving pan or your largest saucepan with the sugar and halved vanilla pods. Heat gently, stirring, until all the sugar has dissolved, then squeeze in the lemon juice and increase the heat.

Boil for about 10 minutes, skimming off the scum as you go (the fruit should be soft). Test for setting point by spooning a little onto your chilled plate.

After 1-2 minutes, push your ďŹ nger through the jam – if the surface wrinkles it is ready, if not, keep cooking for 2-minute intervals, testing in between.

(Or if you have a sugar thermometer it should reach 105C).

Once the jam is ready, let it cool for about 15 mins before ladling into warm sterilised jars and sealing.

Will keep for 6 months in a cool, dark place.

Legal Advice Questions & Answers

By EssentialsMAG legal advice contributor CAROL McGUIRE LASTING POWERS OF ATTORNEY. My daughter has said that I should enter into a Lasting Power of Attorney but I don’t understand what such is? No one wants to face the prospect of not being able to do everything for themselves . Whilst in reasonably good heath, we all think that we will live forever and we don’t want to think about the prospect of poor health.

However, this may be masking what may be problems in the future. This is where it is wise to take action now and not leave your loved ones the horrendous problems that could face them, were you to become incapacitated. Age is irrelevant . We could all be knocked down by a bus regardless of whether we are 18 or 81.

Basically, there are two forms of Lasting Power of Attorney. The first deals with the issue of Finance and the second deals with the issue of Health. Basically they are safeguards for any future problems that might arise. You can appoint more than one Attorney but in doing so, you need to make sure that they are “like minded” on what they think you might want at any particular point in time. So, it’s important that you discuss and give them your opinions .

A Lasting Power of Attorney, simply means, that if you weren’t in a position to deal with your own finances, e.g. if you were bed ridden, then your daughter would be able to deal with the same on your behalf and if you loose the capacity to make your own decisions, then your daughter could deal with the same too. In relation to a Lasting Power of Attorney on the issue of health, then this might for example, be a case of dementia. Once a person has lost mental capacity, then unless there is a Lasting Power of Attorney in place, the only other option would be to make an application to the Court of Protection which creates a huge amount of work for your next of kin and then it is the Court of Protection that makes the decision and not your family who know what your wishes are, but would be unable to act upon them. This is a long process and it often causes practical difficulties in the payment of bills and so forth. It can also be a very slow process.

Please be aware that a Lasting Power of Attorney can start at any time you choose.

An application can be filed with the Office of the Public Guardian but it doesn’t mean that you lose control at that stage. You can decide when to operate it. Also you can change your mind at any time, about having a power of attorney and you can enter into a deed of revocation to stop the same. You can also appoint a Replacement Attorney. Driving Eyesight Rules More Than Meets The Eye A proportion of the motorists that require glasses or contact lenses while driving are flouting rules that could see them land hefty punishments and penalties. According to new research, one in eight drivers who require glasses are deciding to do without them. This is of course, illegal and can see the offending motorist penalised with some hefty punishments. If a driver's eyesight does not meet the minimum standards required of them on the roads then they could be fined, banned from the road and in severe cases land prison time.

Eyesight rules: 1. You must be able to read a car number plate from 20 meters.

2. You must meet the ‘Snellen Scale’ for visual acuity, which is the chart of letters in your eye test. This is set at least 0.5 (6/12) 3. You must have an adequate field of vision. If you don’t meet these standards you are obliged to inform the DVLA. 4. You must wear glasses or contact lenses every time you drive if you need them to meet the ‘standards of vision for driving’.

5. Driving without your glasses when you need them is not just illegal, but dangerous.

The fact that it is illegal means that driving without your glasses will invalidate your insurance.

6. Given that a person’s eyesight can change a significant amount in as little a six months or a year, it is recommend motorists have their eyes tested regularly to make sure they remain safe on the road and reduce the risk of road traffic accidents.

Every Three Seconds Someone in the World Develops Dementia WELSH SNIPPET BY MATTHEW MURRAY-JAMES, HOME INSTEAD SENIOR CARE In this edition, we will be sharing some tips and ideas about how to communicate with people living with dementia. When communicating with someone with dementia, there are many things to consider, and remember that talking isn’t always the most effective method. Here are some ideas to help with communication: • Acknowledge what the person has said. Even if they don't answer your question, express that you've heard them and encourage them to say more about their answer.

• Use gestures, movement and facial expressions. Physical signs and body language can all convey meaning and help get messages across, especially when speaking becomes more difficult.

• Use Humour. Laughing can help to bring you closer together, and may relieve the pressure.

• Become an active listener. Listening is a very important aspect of engaging with someone with dementia. Look for non-verbal cues such as facial expressions and body language to try and understand what they are trying to tell you.

• Let the person express their feelings. If the person is feeling sad, don’t try and persuade them away from that feeling. Showing you care by just listening is sometimes the best method of communicating.

• Use physical contact to provide reassurance. Holding or patting the person's hand or putting your arm around them might be all that is needed to let them know you are there for them.

• Use visual clues. Writing your messages down or using objects or pictures to help the person understand could help alleviate a breakdown in communication.

Communication difficulties can be frustrating and upsetting for people with dementia as well as their caregivers and loved ones. Active listening, non-verbal communication, visual props and laughter are just a few ways to help alleviate some of the tensions you may experience when engaging with those living with dementia.

RAF Charity Seeks Compassionate Volunteers to Help Veterans The Royal Air Forces Association, the charity that supports the RAF family, is looking for caring people in Wrexham to join its team of trained welfare volunteers. The charity is looking for volunteers who can visit current and former RAF personnel and their families who are in need of support. Full nationally accredited training will be provided.

“Forces personnel and their families sacrifice a normal family life to keep the rest of us safe,” says Katharine Lord, Volunteer Manager at the RAF Association. “And we believe that we owe them a debt of gratitude once they have served. We provide practical and emotional support, and are looking for people in Wrexham to help us help those in need.”

The role of welfare volunteer involves making a visit to a beneficiary’s home to find out what kind of support they need. It could also involve undertaking research and signposting sources of help, completing application forms for financial support or just being a friendly face to talk to for a lonely veteran. Welfare volunteers need to be helpful and empathetic, with the ability to build a rapport with others and put them at ease through a friendly and sensitive approach.

Volunteering for the RAF Association helps develop relationship building, research and teamwork skills, as well as giving individuals a great sense of wellbeing from helping others.

Bill Kerr, Association welfare volunteer, said: “I have always been involved in charity work, both during my career with the RAF and since leaving. Because of how the Association and others helped us, my wife and I felt that we would participate and help others. It allowed us to make the decision to volunteer and then attending the caseworker training even more poignant.”

There are no experience requirements for the welfare volunteer roles, as full training is provided, however volunteers should be aged at least 18 years and demonstrate they have the motivation and skills required. Volunteers may be serving or retired Air Force personnel, or they may have no RAF link at all, but want to support the Association’s work.

The ability to travel is important for this role as you will need to visit various locations, including the homes of beneficiaries. Hours are flexible to suit a volunteer and visits can occasionally be undertaken during evenings and weekends depending on the beneficiary.

Your Pet Can Become a Hero Few pet owners realise that behind the scenes, donor pets are a vital component in making an incredible gift of life to help other animals in need.

Now, the owners of deceased pets can bequeath their pet’s body to an organisation to harvest tissue and bone that is then used to repair injuries in pets.

Veterinary Tissue Bank (VTB), Europe’s first and only tissue bank for pets is based in Chirk, Wrexham. To date, VTB has helped nearly 10,000 dogs and cats with bone transplants.

Bone is used to repair broken bones, treat bone cancer, fuse arthritic joints, etc.

Tissue donation can only take place at the end of the pet’s life, however, pet owners can register their pets to become tissue donors, a scheme similar to human organ and tissue register. The owner is then issued with a Pet Donor Card which helps to facilitate the donation process.

Any dog or cat can become a donor, but certain medical criteria need to be met, such as vaccination history and exclusion of certain diseases. The vet can advise on eligibility.

At the time of donation, the owner will have a chance to withdraw consent, as well as the option to request for ashes returned without any cost being incurred.

Larry the Lurcher has helped the lives of 83 other dogs.

Larry, a 15-year-old Lurcher, was a rescue dog and rehomed to Marion Davies over 13 years ago. They had a very close bond.

When Larry began to fail, Marion thought: “I was realistic about Larry’s aging process and knew that he wasn’t going to be with me for much longer. I loved him dearly, but also felt that when he died it was important to go to help someone else-whether that is another human, in our case, or another animal in their case.”

Marion explained “It’s hard when your loved pet is dying but in some cases the knowledge that a beloved pet’s departure has actually been able to help other pets find a new lease of life can make the grief more bearable and that was certainly the case for me.”

In Larry’s case, his tissues went on to help 83 other dogs in need of surgery.

Mirroring the same principles and many of the supply problems as human tissue donation, the tissue bank has an urgent need for more pet donors.

RSPB Hedge Cutting and The Law

There are certain laws regarding hedge cutting which you should be aware of to ensure there is no damage to active bird nests.

Some mature hedgerows are protected by law but this wouldn’t normally apply to garden hedges. We recommend not cutting hedges and trees between March and August as this is the main breeding season for nesting birds, although some birds may nest outside of this period.

It is an offence under Section 1 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act of 1981 to intentionally take, damage or destroy the nest of any wild bird while it is in use or being built, or to intentionally kill, injure or take chicks or adults, or intentionally take or destroy any eggs.

It is an intentional act, for example, if you or your neighbour know there is an active nest in the hedge and still cut the hedge, damaging or destroying the nest or contents in the process.

If someone is cutting a hedge during this period, speak to them and politely mention the risk to birds’ nests, and the laws protecting nests. If they proceed, and you know there is an active nest at risk, contact the police on 101, and ask for a reference number.
